This is a very dangerous situation both for saudi arabia and the United States. Im in for alex wagner. A leaderless yemen, a new leader in saudi arabia and two japanese hostages. Today even after the deadline passed to pay ransoms, the japanese government said it was still trying to secure the release of the two hostages held by isis. The mother of one of the hostage hostages pleaded for her sons release. Over in yemen, fears of civil war are starting to grow. As it stands now, the country is without a president , a Prime Minister and a government. The u. S. Embassy announced it would further reduce its american personal there. The latest developments out of yemen come as the u. S. Is attacking multiple Foreign Policy challenges. Earlier today, secretary of state john kerry outlined the u. S. Strategy for tackling violent extremism. Eliminated the terrorists who confront us today only solves part of the problem. We have to do more to avoid an endless cycle of violent extremism, a resupplying on a constant basis. We have to transform the very environment from which these movements emerge and thats why we are committed to enlarging our strategy in ways that respond effectively to the underlying causes as well as the visible symptoms of violence extremism. Joining me now is foreign news correspondent and brian katulis. Thank you both for joining. Japanese officials said yesterday they were trying every possible way to reach out to the isis militants that are holding the two hostages but theyve been unable to make contact. Japans Prime Minister said they would not meet the ransom. With similar demands by isis this does not bode well. Japan has taken a position we have seen in the past, one that has been adopted by the u. S. To not pay ransoms. Perhaps theres some leverage that the japanese government has that we dont know about it. It does not appear at this time that they are willing to play ball with ransom. Certainly not that amount of 200 million. Brian, let me turn to you. There are many European Countries that have secured the release of their hostages through ransom. What about japan . They had hostages over a decade ago, some people held captive inside of iraq, and it is not clear how they were released. I think the public statements indicate they are likely to have a policy thats closer to what the u. S. Has, which is they are not going to pay. I dont have high optimism given the brutality and the insanity of this group isis. I fear this is going to be similar to what we have seen last summer and through the fall. I hope not, but it doesnt look very positive. Japanese twitter users are mocking isis with a hash tag that translates into isis crappy photoshop grand prix. What are your thoughts on this . I think it is a way to hit back at isis in a way that isis has been very proud of itself. It provides itself on being a strong propaganda machine. They put a lot into the resources to reach people to propagate their message on social media so i think this is a way to strike back at them using one of their own tools and to let them know the images some people are looking at certainly have a lot of questions surrounding them their authenticity. Theres some questions about them immediately. I think the fact the japanese people are doing it it is a way of taking the fight to isis from the propaganda perspective. The other Big Development today is the death of king abdullah. Can you tell us how his death affects the broader geoe erer geopolitics of the region . King abdullah was one of the few leaders who could bring many of these countries together more than a decade ago under the arab peace initiative, one that israel did not respond to. He was of a generation that is passing on. It seems like so far we have had a smooth transition inside of saudi arabia. Well see what happens next but over the last couple of years, the United States has come to see saudi arabia as central to its own strategy. Its the only country that president obama visited in middle east last year and that was for good reason. Saudi arabia is not only the Worlds Largest oil producer and has a tremendous impact but it is also involved in a lot of key transitions like yemen and also egypt. So it is a center of gravity right now. One doesnt really know. Nobody really knows how stable that center of gravity actually is. I want to come back to yemen because it is facing an incredible power vacuum right now and even potentially heading into civil war. There was a critical Editorial Board criticizing the obama administration. The yemen mess reveals the weaknesses on mr. Obamas northern Foreign Policy. Whats your take on this . Certainly a lot of drone strikes have been carried out there. But this is a serious problem for u. S. National security interests. When you look at it from a big picture, yemen has now essentially been broken up not territorial, but the power structure there has been completely fragmented. You have the rise of the Houthi Rebels who are a shia sect of islam. They are trying to get a bigger piece of the political pie inside that country. In doing so, theyre going to create a vacuum that will allow al qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula to rise up. They certainly will not, if they have a bigger say in the politics of that country, be more aligned with the United States to carry out the military operations it has been allowed to do under the previous yemeni governments. Thank you very much to both of you. Thank you. The state Department Says the u. S. Relationship with israel remains unshakable when they announced yesterday that president obama and john kerry will meet with president netanyahu. That got some pushback today on word that kerry will visit with nigeria on sunday. Its different. Theres a difference between hosting a meeting exclusively with one candidate in your own country and visiting a country and making clear to all candidates and all parties about the need to keep reduce violence. House Speaker John Boehner issued an invite to netanyahu. The white house has said it was not consulted describing the invite as a breach of protocol. After the break, more players from the new England Patriots are weighing in on deflate gate. Plus fast food right. Why a lawsuit against mcdonalds could have implications for Fast Food Restaurants across the country. Thats ahead on now. 10 fico score, thanks to the tools and help on experian. Com. Because health is everything. For years, its been clear there is no risk that i was going to take tom bradys job, but as of today, its clear theres no risk of him taking my job either. I came up with that on my own. Thank you, thank you. Today even the white house was having some fun with deflate gate. Not so for the patriots. This team has a lot of trust in tom. Honestly i dont think anyone in this locker room is worried about it. We got to do everything we can to play well against them. I think they did a good job of handling it. I think everything that needs to be talked about on that subject has been discussed and id like to focus on the game we have next week in seattle. News conferences yesterday did little to tamp down the controversy, but perhaps the biggest news to emerge was that bradys revelation was that four days in the league has yet to speak to him. No but they may. They may. I think thats their i think thats obviously their choice. Do you find that odd though if they want to put this behind us and get ready for the super bowl . Sure. They might. The nfl released a statement confirming reports that footballs used bid the patriots during the first half of sundays game were under in underinflated. We have obtained and are continuing to obtain additional information, including video and other electronic information and physical evidence. The investigation is ongoing and is being pursued expeditiously. Joining me now is john richie. Whats your reaction to todays statement from the nfl . Frankly, what do you think of the leagues response so far . Im shocked that they havent interviewed tom. I think he is the only person you need to interview in this matter. Everyone who has played the game knows that the starting quarterback is the guy in charge of those game balls and he basically puts forth the protocol for the Equipment Team to condition those balls before a game. They stick them in the drier and roll them around. They submerge them in water. They sand blast them. They scrape them. They rub them. They oil them. They condition them the way that the quarterback wants them. Tom brady knew what was going on, if they were deflated after the officials checked them, it was because tom brady asked someone to go in there and do something he knew was wrong and thats the bottom line. Tom bray zidy is the one at fault. If tom does admit that i think there will be some pretty severe punishments in store for brady, for the patriots as a team losing draft picks, and for Bill Belichick himself because ignorance is no longer an excuse in the nfl. You saw pats players addressing the media. How distracting is this for the other players on the team . I cant imagine how annoying this is becoming and it will continue to stretch into further annoyingness for another week now. These guys by the time the game comes around theyll be dying to punch somebody in the mouth, put their face on someone, and get some of this pent up frustration out of them. It absolutely is a distraction. I wish this would have been nipped in the bud yesterday. Tom brady should have said this is a mistake and i wont let it happen again. Tom didnt do that. As a result, it could infuriate his team, but i dont think itll hinder them when they get to play football. Thank you very much. John richie. Joining me now is cavita davidson and maggie gray. Maggie, i want to turn to you first and ask you frankly how damaging is this for the nfl . And especially coming after a year of scandals. It pales against the other scandals but it does hit to the center of the integrity of the game. Ultimately were talking about a team that is known to operate in the gray area if you will, and they are once again under a cloud of suspicion. Not only are they under this cloud, but they are incredibly successful. They are constantly in the race and the mix for the playoffs and the super bowl. It also involves a team that is very popular and wins a lot. Cavita, todays statement says in the coming days we expect to conduct numerous additional interviews. I think the nfl is dragging its feet is very strategic at this point. Strategic and not incompetent. Thats also a good question. While you are right, we need to be able to separate an incident like this from a ray rice incident, but it begs the question what did they learn from that . They overhauled their disciplinary process, but they havent increased their transparency and consistency . If tom brady came out and said, it was all me. I was the one who took the air out of the footballs, he could have gotten suspended from the super bowl. Were talking about this. Its been in the news. Isnt this really great for ratings for the super bowl . Sure. Were on msnbc talking about this. This is something that is going to cross over but i think it is more about tom brady. He has a super model wife. This will be on the front page of a london newspaper, maybe even in hong kong. His reach is so broad. Thats what makes this more than just a sports story. It is also one of those instances where the longer the nfl takes, the longer goodell takes to comment on this publicly the bigger the story it actually becomes, especially in the offweek. They have to get their ducks in a row here. They cannot mess this up. They need to get every t crossed and i dotted before they can come down with what it could be and expecting some harsh penalties if the patriots were nefarious nefarious. This poll asked fans if they believe Bill Belichick and tom brady brady, fans outside of the northeast said no. People dont believe what the patriots are saying because they have proof in spy gate where the patriots were cheating. They were caught. They were disciplined for it. The proof is right there. Like i said the patriots kind of operate in this gray area. Theres this kind of feeling that the pateriots get a little leeway in the league. Theres a little bit of a raised eyebrow on the patriots no matter what. Thats absolutely true. I think that it is no surprise that outside of new england, i think everyone agrees on this as a monolith. It is easy to come out and defend your own guy even when it is Bill Belichick. This is actually reaching on a National Level in ways they hadnt anticipated. Thanks very much to both of you. Ten former mcdonalds workers in virginia have filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the fast food chain. The reason according to former employees who are all hispanic or black, supervisors talked about the, quote, need to get the ghetto out the store and get rid of those n words and mexicans. One worker touched female workers inappropriately. The stores had, quote, too many black people and they didnt fit the profile of the organization. Mcdonalds said we are carefully reviewing the lawsuit and the allegations and we caution against a rush to judgment. Mcdonalds has a long standing history of embracing the diversity of employees and customers and supplyiers and discrimination is completely against our set of values. They come just weeks after mcdonalds launched an ad campaign by invoking National Tragedies like the Boston Marathon bombing and attacks on september 11th. The overarching message in the ad that mcdonalds is an exemplary model for good business. Whats the disconnect here between mcdonalds brand and its actions as a company . It is a huge disconnect. I think those golden arches are rusting. Mcdonalds likes to fake they are this family wonderful brand when in fact they are being suing for racism and sexual harassment. They had already been sued for wage theft. Mcdonalds closely monitors everything we do from the speed of the drive through line to the way we smile and fold customers bags but they ignore us and say its not their problem. Tell us exactly how has mcdonalds been able to avoid legal responsible for its workers. It is and should be there problem, but what mcdonalds has been able to do is say, look its not on us. These are independent franchise stores. The truth of the matter is they are so closely controlling the operations of these small stores and reaping the profit that the franchisees are giving back to them. They cant say it is not our responsibility, these violations taking place, and on the other hand control everything thats happening in the store. So they are the real boss. Absolutely. On tuesday, a federal judge ruled that tgifs failed to pay 42,000 workers minimum wage and overtime for extra work. Is mcdonalds an anomaly or is this something thats rampant in the Fast Food Restaurant industry . It is rampant. We saw it all across the fast food industry. We see folks cant support themselves on a minimum wage that the Fast Food Restaurant industry is operating on. Mcdonalds is not an outlier. What does this mean for the national fight for fast food wages . You have seen multiple lawsuits filed against mcdonalds corporate for wage theft, for retaliateing against workers. What it means for mcdonalds is the best thing they can do to repair their brand is raise wages for their workers, answer questions about whats happening in their Stores Across america and canada and be responsive to what is happening and what millions of fast food workers are saying are real problems in their stores. Something in the lawsuit that caught my attention is that many of these workers called corporate to ask for help and they got no response. Never responded. This is part of the thing. Mcdonalds says they are not responsible and yet they are telling their workers, call us go up the chain of the command. The workers called. They never responded allegedly. This is interesting to me, the Racial Discrimination part it has one of the largest organizations of black franchisees. Talk to us about mcdonalds as a brand and having and supporting owners of its black franchises and these practices. Dorian to me these racial dynamics strike me as hypocrisy. They do in their customers. And their commercials. Their practices, apparently not. Theres this huge disconnect depending on which franchise youre talking about, so you cant have it both ways. You cant make a broader urban market and have these racial lawsuits on the other hand. Thank you very much. Thanks to both of you. Your ticket to a better nights sleep after a sevenyear battle for his memoir to be declassified, the first book written by a guantanamo detainee in prison is out. He came into u. S. Custody shortly after 9 11. The diary records his capture beginning in his native country and progressing through afghanistan before landing in gitmo in 2002. Reporter the cell better the box, was cooled down to the point that i was shaking most of the time. For the next 70 days i wouldnt know the sweetness of sleeping. Interrogation 24 hours a day. I was living literally in terror. That we sat down with one of his attorneys. Joining me now is the attorney and the editor of the book. Thank you guys for joining me. Thank you. First tell me how do you write a book from inside Guantanamo Bay . How did this come about . He wants us his lawyers, to know his story and that turned into a long document the one that is now published because he wanted the world to know his story. What that story is is remarkable. It is a firsthand ktdaccount of torture. It is also a really humane and graceful book because he talks in an environment that was about dehumanizing him. He still seeks out the humanity in his torturers and jailers and tries to understand what happened to him, why, and how it affects the people around him. How were the missives sent out . He didnt speak english when he entered the prison and learned while he was in there. Was it okay for him to be writing this . He mastered english while in prison. He wrote this sections of which everything that a guantanamo detainee writes is classified. It took us about six years of litigation and negotiation with the government to get this published. There are heavy redactions. Heavy. I think it is very courageous and telling that you guys decided to print the redactions to give us a sense of how much folks do not want us to know about what is going on inside gitmo. Give the torture, both physical and psychological, that he has endured so far, thats the stuff we know about. Obviously, we cant talk specifically about what these redactions are, but what has the military been most resistant in having come out . These are the last fingerprints of an intense secrecy regime thats surrounded him for years. This is the last bit of information. A lot of it we have because they have had to declassified government documents. Theres information in there that we dont know from other documents. Things like names, descriptive details about interrogators. The redactions damage his text in two ways. One is that hes an incredibly open story teller. And the redactions suggest that information is being concealed. It is not him that is concealing the information. It is the u. S. Government. Theyll ask him about specific people. Those names are redacted. He wants us to know were not being allowed to. His ethic as a writer and as a person is to treat everyone as an individual. He just he interacts with everyone. He says everyone is a combination of godod and bad and the only question is what percentage of each. It makes it different for us to track those stories the way he wants to not to judge them and to condemn them but often to look how some of them redeem themselves. Hannah, tell everyone who is watching this segment sort of how he ended up in gitmo and what also was done to his family in the interim. Its a rather remarkable tale. He turned himself into his local police force understanding they had questions to ask him. Then he was sent to jordan where he was tortured for eight months and then he was brought to guantanamo. During the first year of his captivity, his family thought he was still overseas. They were bringing money and food to the prison that he was held in. It wasnt until a year later that they found out he was in guantanamo. Not telling a family where their son or daughter is being held, is that common practice . This is part of what happened at guantanamo and what the cia did elsewhere. This was part of the regime the program that was put in place. We have talked about one remarkable aspect which is he humanizes his torturers and interrogators. So his mother prayed every day, wanted to be able to see him, obviously. He talks about the very first time about receiving a letter from her and he smells it and touches it thinking that his mother has touched it. Hes never going to be able to see his mother again. She died in 2013 which was the tenth year of his captivity in guantanamo, but the rest of his family very much wants him back. They would take him back. This is a man who has been held now unlawfully unjustly. Thats why we have launched a Campaign Calling on the department of defense not to contest his case so we can get an order to get him go. We hear about torture and isolation. We hear about the dramatic toll that has taken on his family. What does he want the reader to know in this book . What is the thing you have taken away in your correspondence with him . The thing that powers him through the writing is he is a curious person and a social person and a very thoughtful and engaging and forgiving person. I think part of the process for him of writing this book was to try to fairly assess his experience. And he manages to do that. He treats everybody with great generosity. One of the things that hes really interested in is what motivates the people who are doing this to him. He has remarkable and sometimes incredibly intimate conversations with them. Theres an amazing passage where he has a conversation with the guard. Why would you execute these orders to prohibit him from praying for over a year . I had to. They would have given me a lousy job for having done it. I know i could go to hell for what i did to you. This is critically important in the debate over closing gitmo, humanizing the men who are behind bars. It is a big book at a really important time. The book is guantanamo diary. We have some breaking news to bring you this hour. The Supreme Court has agreed to review oklahomas execution procedures, taking up a case brought by three death row inmates. The high Court Allowed the execution of Charles Warner over the objection of three judges. Joining me now is pete williams. Pete, is it surprising to you that the court took up this case after allowing a lethal injection to go forward just last week . Somewhat yes. But theres a Sharp Division on the court about these cases. The question is six years ago the Supreme Court rejected a constitutional challenge to the lethal Injection System that was then in effect. The court said theres no guarantee to a painfree execution. In this new challenge, these three death row inmates, the lawyers, are saying the new combination of drugs that the state has used is untested experimental, and wont provide a dulling of pain in the first drug before the others. This will be a big deal. The first challenge in six years to lethal injection. The difference of course six years there was a pretty well established system of lethal injection. Those drugs that were widely used by states are largely unavailable and the states have been scrambling to find replacements replacements. In some cases turning to compounding pharmacies to get the drugs made up. This will be a new look at a system that truly has challenge ed changed. Whats the time frame for this case . They just made it. It is granted now this late in january. It can be argued yet this term. It will be argued in late april and then the judgment would come sometime before the term ends in late june. Pete williams thank you very much. Thats all for now. The ed show is up next. Good evening, americans, and welcome to the ed show live from detroit lakes, minnesota. Lets get to work.
