Reporter thats in philadelphia. There was a report of a taxi driver said he picked two people up fitting their description at an intersection took them to the 30th street amtrak station. Charles ramsey the police chief of philadelphia s discounting that saying he has no reason to believe that theyre in philadelphia. For one thing, this taxi cab driver picked up two other fares before calling 911. But theyre looking at Security Camera footage in philadelphia to try to figure out if theres anything to that. So right now at this point, that tip allegedly from that the tip from the taxi driver who alleges he saw these two out of philadelphia, they are discrediting that and thats why the primary search is where you are right now . The other headline in addition to officers focused heavily in the area where john yang is stationed, what weve heard off the record for a few days its now been confirmed to nbc news that this employee, this woman who worked in the tailor shop helped these individuals make this escape all along. Governor cuomo and others have said theres no way they could have pulled this off without some inside help. Yeah. And i think thats going to be the case, tamron. Weve got two things going. Number one, how did they get out . Who helped them who gave them information, who gave them tools, who helped facilitate the escape . And number two is, where are they right now . These are simultaneous investigations. But i think the smart money right now says these two guys are still in the area. If in fact she was supposed to be the getaway driver she had a panic attack, left the area, these guys hopped out of that manhole and had nowhere to run to and nowhere to hide. Theres 12 14 hours of daylight in that area right now every day, everything was on the side of Law Enforcement. If these guys stayed in that area which i think they probably did, everything says Law Enforcement is closing in on them. Theyve got search dogs that have hit on the scent. Theyve found wrappers candy bar wrappers. Theyve found footprints. A lot of physical evidence that links these two to that area to the exclusion of anywhere else in the country right now. But back to how they were allegedly able to work this woman, prey on her, at least one of them convince her that they were in love that it was a couple in love so much so that shes willing to risk everything. It breaks your heart when you think her son was interviewed by Stephanie Gosk the other day and he says theres no way my mother would do this shes married to my father. And now were hearing an allegation far different than what her family knew about her life. In a situation like this tamron, there are two Different Things normally that drive somebody who works in a prison to help an inmate. Thats either money or its emotion. And when we look at mr. Matt the older of the two, he is your stone, cold manipulative psychopath. Not only has he committed two horrible murders that we know of, but he is such a con man. Hes a convict. Hes the ultimate con man. And i would suggest that he conned his way into the honors floor on the prison and conned his way into this womans heart to use her to help facilitate this escape. John Officials Say that richard matt established a relationship with Joyce Mitchell over a couple of months. I know that you tried to speak with her husband. Hes been m. I. A. , not talking to the press at this point. Hes not suspected of any wrongdoing nor is he expected to be charged at this point. Do we know any more about what hes been able to provide to authorities . Reporter we dont know. He also works in the prison works in the same tailor shop in the same sort of role, a supervisory role. We dont know if hes been questioned or what information he might be providing. We dont know his awareness level of all of this. Its a lot to be uncovered here. But as you pointed out, clint, many times when someones willing to risk so much it is for money or love. And in this case the allegation is that she did this out of love. But getting nervous and leaving and not providing that getaway car, you can only wonder if shed follow through with this plan because it was so elaborate and these men were missing for a very long time before guards discovered it. They could have gotten very far away if shed kept her alleged part of the deal. Oh, they could have gotten with the realization that matt has spent a lot of time in mexico, they easily could have gotten down to mexico had she fulfilled her role. Theres two different fantasies here. Theres the fantasy for these two that theyre going to escape and never get caught and theres the fantasy unfortunately that this woman harbored that this guy was going to be her new lover, perhaps, if thats verified by Law Enforcement. Both fantasies are meeting the harsh light of reality. And right now, were hoping that light lights up these two fugitives and Law Enforcement is able to get them into custody. Shes been identified as 17yearold ali amin. At a News Conference in the past hour Authorities Say amin used social media to recruit and even raise money for isis. That included directing people how to use bitcoin and how to use it anonymously. He also engaged in recruitment of people to try and get them to go to syria to fight with isil. Between june of 2014 and february of 2015 he gained over 4,000 followers on twitter and sent over 7,000 tweets as part of his campaign to support isil. Nbc news justice correspondent Pete Williams was at that News Conference in alexandria, virginia. He joins us now. What else did we learn about this 17yearold . Reporter everything about this case is unusual. A 17yearold who was able just by getting online to actually arrange travel for a friend of his to get to syria. Authorities say that he helped an 18yearold find the contacts, get to turkey and get to syria and that he actually drove this young man to Dulles Airport here outside washington in january to start him on this journey. The federal authorities dont know where this man is now. He was also charged in connection with this case. His defense lawyer says that he was a very bright young man that got seduced by isis propaganda that his intent originally was to try to focus opposition on the assad regime and that he got sucked into isis propaganda. Both the defense and prosecution agree on one thing, its a sad story of an honor student in suburban washington who crossed the line and admitted he helped the terror organization. Hell be sentenced in late august. The maximum he faces is 15 years in prison. But Authorities Say he has been cooperating since he was arrested, helping them understanding what he did, how he did it. So the government will obviously ask for some reduction in sentence. But we dont know what theyll recommend, tamron. Pete williams interesting case, as you pointed out, a very unusual case as well. His Attorney SaysCorporal Eric casebolt never intended to mistreat anyone at the pool party. She says he was not targeting minorities in any way but that when he went to that pool party call he had just come off two other calls that involved suicides. The first public words from the Police Officer in this video are coming from his attorney who apologized on Eric Casebolts behalf. He apologizes to all who were offended. That day was not representative of the tenyear service to the community of mckinney. And it is his hope that by his resignation the community may start to heal. Reporter his call to the pool party came after he had responded to two suicide calls. And the stress had taken its toll. With all that had happened that day, he allowed his emotions to get the better of him. Reporter were also now hearing from the teenage girl pushed to the ground through her attorney who says she is shaken and hasnt decided whether to file a formal complaint. Officer casebolts voluntary resignation should noot mean the end to this investigation. Reporter the community is still taking in what happened hoping for a return to the way things were, not knowing if thats possible. I dont know. Its just kind of shocking. But at the same time too, it is kind of a relief just to know that he has resigned. Reporter the teenager is afraid to leave her home, her Attorney Says. The Police Union Says casebolt has had to leave his because hes received death threats. This incident does not fully depict erics moral and ethical character. Developing now the exgirlfriend of colorado theater shooter james holmes is back on the stand in the Death Penalty trial today. In her comments her Public Comments about the shooting she testified yesterday she met holmes at graduate school back in 2011 and described him as bright but shy. She told the jury their first date was a horror Film Festival and they dated for several months before she broke it off with him. I was getting distant from him. Why . I had already told him from the start it would be a casual relationship and i did not really feel much closer with him. I think he liked me more than i liked him. Prosecutors say holmes sent his exgirlfriend messages while they were dating saying he wanted to kill people but she did not take him seriously. Prosecutors are expected to show those texts today. It says the original premise of bushs candidacy that a bold fast start would scare off potential rivals and help him overcome the burden of his last name has proved to be misguided. What is your take on this article . I think thats the best take on the entire jeb bush apparatus right now. Its too early to say that his campaign is impossible of winning the republican nomination. Hell have plenty of money, a lot of establishment support. And usually those things in the past have been the formula to getting a Republican Partys nomination. But what jeb bush wanted to be able to do was have the shockandawe situation where you scare everyone else from running. But there are possible 16 or 18 republicans who could can running for the presidency. Mitt romney was scared out of the race. But everyone else including marco rubio, john kasich, all seem to be in. And thats where jeb bush at least in this early part of the invisible primary, hasnt been able to live up to that shock and awe. Divers have uncovered the wreckage of an african slave trade ship that sunk with slaves on board. It left mozambique bound for brazil with hundreds of africans packed inside. The ship went down off the coast of capetown with half of them trapped inside. A team of Treasure Hunters located it in the 1980s. For the first five years, a team of researchers and archaeologists have quietly worked to recover the artifacts, many of which have remained remarkably intact. Some of those artifacts representing the earliest days of the slave trade are heading to the United States and they will be displayed at the smithsonians National Museum of africanamerican history and culture when it opens next year. Joining me now, the director of the museum, lonnie bunch. Lonnie, so great to have you on. Thank you so much for joining us. Its my pleasure, thank you. I think you might remember the first conversation we had about this and how excited i was at the dinner table when you told me about the possibility that this would happen and it would be revealed to us all and here we are now. Can you explain to those who may not understand why this find is so remarkable . Well the slave trade is something we all know about. We really dont have tangible evidence of it. And so Much Research about slavery has been done but the area that we dont know anything more about is really the slave ship itself. So to be able to actually find a ship that was found with african slaves on board will tell us a lot. And to bring that back to washington is very special. And we talked about the Treasure Hunters who located it in the 80s. What was that process like . What drew them to that site . I think this is a site thats near the cape of storm. So a lot of ships have gone down. And i think Treasure Hunters always felt that they could find some gold or something very important. And when they couldnt they kind of left it alone. But we were fortunate to be able to work with the best scholars to revisit the site to do the research and to be sure that it is the ship. When they discovered what they believed to be the ship this were there were a few key things you told me that indicated that it was human cargo on board that ship including weights that were used on these ships because bodies and humans weigh in shift boats different than if this were cargo of fruit or other things. Thats right. They used an iron ballasts. One of the telltale signs of a slave ship is that it has this kind of ballast because human cargo doesnt have the weight that, say, wood does or metal. What do we know happened that day . I know that some of the men and women who were enslaved and on that ship they were saved and not because their lives were precious as humans but because they were cargo and they meant money. Thats exactly right. As the ship was hitting the rocks and was going down there was a great effort to rescue the cargo because they were worth so much money to the owners. And ultimately what happens is that all the crew and almost half of the enslaifdved people are rescued but half perish when the ship goes down. But what is even more painful is those that are rescued are sold two days later from capetown and dispersed throughout south africa. And this is a delicate balance that we want to show people these artifacts here in the United States and bring them to this museum that youve given your life and soul to curate but also for those of mozambique and what it means to them to have this ship recovered. What was so powerful for me is i spent the last couple of weeks in mozambique and in capetown. And i went to the area of the people who were on the ship. And some of the village elders then actually gave us soil that they wanted me to take back and sprinkle over the site of the wreck because as the chieftain said this will finally allow our people to rest in peace in their homeland. The museum will have so much history. Sarasota police say the suspect seen on Surveillance Video speeding through an intersection and running over a man in a wheelchair confessed early this morning. The hitandrun happened late tuesday night. The victim 48yearold Michael Wright died of his injuries early wednesday morning. The driver is identified as malik cliborn. Also in florida, a semi truck carrying four sharks crashed, leaving one of the animals dead. Officials say they were being transported to an aquarium in coney island. What appealed to me about it was that it was a love story that i got to this island. Its a film about several different three different families that get to an island because each one is running away from something. And im running away because my grandson is just hes just gotten in some trouble with the police. So as a senators widow im sequestering him until it blows over. And on this island i find i encounter a lost love, an old love from many years ago and its rekindled. We dont often see women of my maturity in sort of passionate somewhat torrid love affairs. So i really wanted to do that. Is that what drew you in to that character . Its somewhat as you pointed out, a character their we dont often see, which we should obviously. Yeah. But we dont. It was. Because as women of color we dont often get the opportunity certainly in our 40s and 50s to portray really sort of romantic characters really highly you know i arrive in white linen with a large white hat. It just was very grace kelly 1940s romance. So it was a lovely moment. It is interesting because here your very presence is one that exudes beauty and confidence and this elegance that i think many people feel is absent from at least the representation of our culture, does not mean it doesnt exits, but what we see on television doesnt often reflect the beauty and the texture that is the black experience in america. Some of whats changing is were getting an opportunity to play complexity to. One of the things about playing vi was shes extraordinarily complex. The other aspect is romance, sort of being romantic characters, being tender and loving and sexy and sensual. That thats were always sort of hardnosed and no nonsense black women. And thats some of us yes, thats, you know as you pointed out, its a textured thing, its layered. Textured. Vi could not be more different from this character if i dont think a character is frightening more. I think maybe kathy bates in misery misery and vi, the hell in my mind, these two people. Were you blown away by a, how folks gravitated to that character and the success of this on netflix . Yes. I think netflix is an extraordinary model. And when i joined the company of orange i had no real idea of the scope of this show and this model, how it would really have taken over the world. Its gone global. It has. And so it was really shocking. You know when youre doing when youre acting on a show like that, ive got blinders on. Im really in the cave my daughter says mommy works in a cave, which was literal because you go into a sound stage, dark and come out and it would be light. My mom works in a cave.
