We do have a copy and we are not showing it because theres a lot in here people might find objectionable or offensive or worse. Many in the Muslim Community say the whole magazine especially the cover, is insulting and provocative to their religion. But it is edgy. I think theres a curiosity factor about this. It is a very edgy magazine high brow satirical. Their goal is to make humor, poke fun. There are strong messages in the magazine and in the commentary for the need to be a secular country, not dominated by religion or religious extremists. Jabs at the pope as well as a lot of jabs at jihadis coming back from the war to try to integrate into france being turned away, being ridiculed, that sort of thing. But it is basically a curiosity factor. I believe there are auctions on ebay where editions are selling for thousands of dollars. If theyre going to print 2 million copies i suspect theyll be snapped up quickly as well. As i said it is almost impossible. Impossible now to get a copy of this they went in minutes and people lined up overnight to try to get one. The other Development Today is that the president of france Francois Hollande finished addressing the nations military an annual event he does to start the new year but of course it takes on added significance now because of the high alert that the country is on the highest alert possible. Basically his message to the military was to say thank you that the nation is grateful for their service and he said by the end of tonight there will be some 10,500 military troops on the streets of france working alongside security, Police Security which is a unique situation that the country has never seen before and the need for everyone to stay vigilant. First of all, american muslims like all muslims worldwide condemn the horrific attacks in paris. I dont think thats the issue here. But the issue of publishing, not publishing, we believe the magazine has the absolute right to publish even derogatory material attacking religious figures, whether the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, or other prophets. But we also reserve the right to be offended by these derogatory representations, and react to them in a peaceful manner to challenge with more speech to counter act sometimes good speech. So we believe in freedom of speech, we believe in freedom of expression, but we also have the right to respect our own religious figures and object peacefully when they are denigrated. And that is the message not just from your organization but a number of other moderate if you have to put that description in front of the word muslim but moderate muslims, and followers believe you have a right to not pick up that copy you have a right to be offended but they have the right to the publication. And the portrayal with that said is that the message that you hope is the overwhelming perception obviously of people who follow islam, not the extremists with the startling and heart stopping video, but one that you can be tolerant and still be offended. I mean just as muslims worldwide reject terrorism, reject religious extremism, they also reject gratuitous insults to their faith and any faith. Muslims objected and we as an organization objected when the socalled artist put a crucifix in a jar of urine. We objected when another artist made an image of mary mother of jesus, peace be upon him using elephant dung. Many americans object when a flag is burned. But they wouldnt have a law that prevents flag burning, even though they reserve the right to object to it. Thats the same thing as muslims. You have the right to be even an antimuslim bigot if you want but we reserve the right to object to bigotry and to speak out peacefully against it. The judge denied his attorneys request for delay in jury selection, in light of recent terror attacks in paris. The defense was seeking delay of at least a month to allow coverage of the attacks to subside, arguing news accounts have drawn parallels between the paris and boston attacks. In his ruling the judge said he believed a fair and impartial jury can and will be chosen to determine the issues in this case. Another developing story now, Counter Terror and military sources are telling us of a security scare at the new Castle Air National Guard base thats in delaware used by Vice President joe biden. Lets go to Jim Miklaszewski live at the pentagon. What can you tell us about this developing news. Reporter we are talking about delaware Air National Guard base at the new castle commercial airport just outside wilmington. And employees reported seeing suspicious individuals who may have been surveilling the base at least they thought so. They reported it and by the way they reported that they appeared to be men at one point, four men who appeared to be of mid eastern origin, arabic perhaps, in a vehicle who appeared to be suspicious. It was reported to base security and the general in charge of the base immediately raised the threat level at the base to bravo, which increases the security level as well just in an overabundance of caution. Not only because of the events in the terrorist attacks in paris last week but also because that happens to be just about 15 minutes from the delaware home of Vice President joe biden, he occasionally flies in there. No indication that he flew in there recently but the commander there put the base on alert. Did not go up the chain of command, he took the action on his own, again emphasizing that u. S. It is stressing that everybody on board the station is safe and they do not believe there was an ammonia leak on board the station. Out of abundance of caution earlier this morning, all six crew members moved to the russian side of the station, because of concern there might be an ammonia problem. Earlier this morning an alarm went off on the american side of the station, about 3 45 a. M. East coast time. Mission control saw an increase in water loop pressure then increase in cabin pressure. Those two issues could be indicative of an ammonia leak something thats very serious, poses a very serious risk to the traunts. All six crew members, you have americans, russians one italian, told to don emergency oxygen masks and go to the russian side where the readings were normal. They then closed that section, closed the hatch, were told they could take off masks and wait. They waited thought they were given the all clear, went back to the american side the alarms went off again. They went back to the russian side yet again, closed the hatch again. Thats where we stand now. Nasa now says it believes this is a false alarm, that sensors may have gone bad or given them a bad reading. They believe it is safe on board and it is likely that in fact the americans will be allowed to go back to the american side of the station. An ohio man is in custody undergoing a 45 day mental evaluation after being accused of plotting to kill House Speaker john boehner. Investigators say michael hoyt came in frequent contact with boehner, was a bartender for five years at the House Speakers country club and served him many times. Speaker boehner took to the house floor in the past hour addressing a controversial dhs funding bill making no mention of the incident. Investigators say hoyt threatened to kill boehner in october, saying he thought the speaker of the house was the devil and responsible for the ebola virus. Luke, obviously the allegations are true the access the man had to the House Speaker are chilling given he was a bar tender and was there many times. It is frightening, in fact. We know that john boehner sort of knew mr. Hoyt as a bartender at his local Ohio Country Club and the speaker is often there playing golf and enjoying merlot two of the things he likes to do in his off time. The other thing, tamron thats chilling about this is the fact is that mr. Hoyt did have a lot of weapons at his home. It was found at his home the ammunition for an sks assault rifle. Thankfully his mother in fact actually took the rifle out of his apartment when he wasnt around because she was worried about her sons mental state. So this is certainly something that caused alarm on capitol hill. The speaker of the house is protected by Capital Police but not the same secret Service Detail as for the president or Vice President. Theres some semblance of advance team but not like people are screened to the left and right like the president and Vice President. The speaker said Speaker Boehner is aware of the situation and sincerely thanks the fbi, Capitol Police and local authorities in ohio for their effort. As we mentioned, he has a 45 day mental examination, and House Speaker told investigators as you well know he did not recall any negative interactions with this individual. I think what also is frightening about this is the contact this individual had with House Speaker John Boehners wife as you mention, sending her those emails, essentially saying i could have killed your husband. Thats not something that would be taken lightly by any spouse so this was somebody who is definitely in the speakers purview and had direct access which i think is one of the reasons why Law Enforcement is taking this seriously, and from what i heard, tamron will reevaluate things moving forward if perhaps they need to have more sets of eyes on these types of developments. As the attacks continue the state Department Yesterday pointed to Upcoming Elections in nigeria as a factor behind the sharp increase in violence as well as their control of territory. We believe the elections should still go forward, even in the face of this pretty horrific violence. Boko haram has taken operational control of increasing amount of territory as well it is not just the attacks we have seen but theyre more able to do them because they have more territory theyre able to control. What are your feelings at this point and how can they be stopped . Well this whole matter has suddenly taken a turn for the worse. Perhaps things failures from the period of intervention is beginning to show much more now. But the situation, you cannot fold your hands and let the instruments of terror win this fight. You know the government is still the authority in the country. And also we actually want to see the elites of northern part of nigeria where the islamic fundamentalism to actually take a much more proactive, loud approach to condemning all of this violence. The government itself has really shown the abilities to contend these things have really not been effective. We are not just talking about one man as the president. We are talking about the core team around this particular president have apparently failed in the ability to even deliver credible strategies to the president who is the commander in chief to be able to do this so it is a failure of the entire administration is failure more so of the core team around this president. They dont seem to know what theyre doing. You mention condemnation from other leaders, and thats one thing and we saw a great amount of condemnation on social media and elsewhere when the girls went missing, many of them never returning to their homes. Yesterday, the Washington Post had an oped that raid the heinous butchery should be a wake up call it is past time for nigeria west africa and the west to recognize boko haram for what it has become a complex terrorism threat on a scale comparable to the islamic state, embedded in africas largest economy and the largest nation. How do you move past verbal condemnation, get the worlds attention, including african nations who also need to do more to stop boko haram, leading to what could be even more turbulent time with Upcoming Elections in nigeria. Thats a great way to look at it tamron because what a lot of people outside of africa do not know is that nigeria has a larger Muslim Population than egypt. I mean the Muslim Population of nigeria alone surfaces that of the entire asian population. Talking about a large, complex country here of 180 Million People, so at this point there has to be a highly collaborative, International Effort because nigeria going down is not an option. Its an option that will pretty much decimate half of sub Saharan Africa the region 300 Million People strong population wise and given how vast and diverse nigeria is Nigerian Community in every african country, most of the businesses in subSaharan Africa have influence of nigerian business Small Businesses and nigeria American Population which is somewhere approximately 2 million, it is about the size of a particular state in nigeria, even some small states in the United States. And they have substantial stake in whats going on. At the end of the day, nigeria is falling apart, getting much more complex in terms of security. Youre going to find there will be a burden shifting also to the Nigerian American community in the United States because they have provided substantial support, Material Support to nigeria in terms of welfare, medicines and all of that. There are reports that the Nigerian Community pumps 1 billion into the nigerian economy, and if you have to do more than that it will start to effect boko haram issue is not typical. When instability shifts to the south of the country, all of this causing pressure on the parties that are contesting for the president ial elections in Nigeria Today because, you know we are really worried. We are worried that folks who are running for office on both sides of the current government theres a lot of issues dont know what theyre going to do differently. On the other side we need to see a much more clear proactive plan of how theyre going to contain security. The president ial election is in four weeks, four five weeks from now, and this boko haram will get worse between now and then. A frightening prediction. Following breaking news from capitol hill where the house is currently voting on amendments to a bill that would fund the department of Homeland Security through september, but right now the house just passed a republican amendment that uses the dhs bill to defund the president s executive actions on immigration. House Speaker John Boehner announced full support for the amendments prior to the votes. This executive overreach is an affront to the rule of law and to the constitution itself. By their votes last november the people made clear that they wanted more accountability from this president. And by our votes here today we will heed their will and we will keep our oath to protect and defend the constitution. Joining me now, nbc news senior Political Editor mark murray. Obviously, mark this is what some on the far right wanted to see and it is going down. Tamron this is the house of representatives taking action. Always the easiest thing in the legislative process that weve seen time and time again is sometimes the house being able to pass its priorities. Now, it is worth noting that the two amendments that just passed rolling back the president s most recent executive action on immigration as well as 2012 one relating to the dreamers and dream act deportation policy these narrowly passed then the ballgame goes to the United States senate and there isnt any expectation that the United States senate will pass anything that has these types of measures in it because you need 60 votes and thus democratic support to get that done. The question becomes where then do you go when it comes to Funding Department of Homeland Security, and thats where you get into potential shutdown scenarios. You get into those scenarios, and we get into the ongoing conversations regarding Republican Opposition to any action from the president , executive action executive order, or you know, many of his supporters, any idea to move the country forward. Plenty of questions after that deadly incident in the washington metro earlier this week in which one woman died and dozens were injured when a subway car filled with smoke. The ntsb which is investigating says the cause was an electrical malfunction in the tunnel. But the agency has declined to comment on specifics of what happened, including the time line of the emergency response. The Washington Post reports that according to some accounts more than 40 minutes went by before firefighters showed up to rescue people trapped in that train. Many of them fearing as you can imagine for their lives. The paper also reports that quote, for reasons not yet clearly explained, firefighters waited in the station before entering the tunnel and walking 800 feet to the train. Joining me now, Railroad Engineering expert gus rivaldi. D. C. Metro had problems with evacuations. They promised they would review protocols and training for employees and create a practice model. In the information we obtained it is all still under investigation. What concerns do you have about how this was handled . Well i dont have all of the details as you do either. But 40 minutes, theres a chain of events. The operator has to see theres a problem and then have someone alert emergency responders. Responders have to get there and gain access to the tunnel. So those are the kinds of things you have to look at. But you mentioned that adding training, et cetera things like that i am a member of the auxiliary of the United States air force, we do 90 to 95 of inland search and rescue. We dont wait for someone to get lost to go look for them we practice all year long on simulated exercises so when the real thing happens, we know what to do. And those are the kinds of exercises that metro i would hope would be doing, and training employees and First Responders how to work in the environment of the tunnel. They may have waited because they were waiting for power to be turned off to the third rail so that the First Responders dont become people who have to be rescued by hitting the third rail. But there are ways to work around active third rails. Maybe First Responders need to be trained in that sort of thing so that they dont have to wait for power to be cut off. Theres all manner of items that have to be considered and looked at in light of what occurred. Absolutely. To your point, the mayor of d. C. Says it is unclear whether firefighters thought they could safely enter the tunnel where trains are electrified by the third rail as you mention. It is an investigation in progress, but the larger picture once again is protocol and whether it is d. C. New york atlanta, any place you have subway systems if theyre prepared to evacuate people in event of emergency. We know it could have been far worse than what we witnessed. Thats correct. And again, if i can make Civil Air Patrol analogy again, pilots are trained for engine out emergencies. And theyre trained to do it instinctively, not because when the engine is out, there isnt time to look up the pilots operating manual to determine what is it were supposed to do. You have to know instinctively. Maybe thats the kind of training that the operators and employees of metro need to do. No need to worry about somebody second guessing you later, it is better to act than not to. All of this under investigation. We will update the audience on results of the investigation. A Florida Police officer is alive today, thanks to a teen who was under arrest. In september Fort Lauderdale Police Officer collapsed while he was booking a 17yearold boy. More cases of measles are linked to an outbreak at disneyland and officials fear there could be more. The state of california confirmed monday 26 people who visited disneyland last month have come down with the virus. A county Health Official confirmed other cases yesterday. You know the answer is that measles virus is actually a cold virus, and just like cold viruses when we talk about regular colds and flu viruses, most times people get measles when they come into close contact in close quarters with someone who is infected. So that could be as simple as just standing in front of a person. But a lot of viruses can live on places like door knobs or countertops and can last several hours. People get those viruses from countertops on their hands, from the hands get back to the nose and mouth and then the infection persists. However, because theres always going to be people unvaccinated or undervaccinated or individuals who cant respond to the vaccine because of their immune system is low, because theyre undergoing chemotherapy theres always going to be a susceptible population. When you get people that come together from all over the world in places like these International Amusement parks or sometimes we see them after the olympics or world cup where people from all over the world come together youre going to get spread of infections. Those people who are not vaccinated or do not respond to vaccines can then contract the disease. I should correct myself not the measles with the nhl, the mumps outbreak. With that said with parents that might be looking ahead to spring break and other places where kids will be in close contact, theyre the most susceptible, like the elderly. What do you do . The answer is that just as i said the measles is a cold virus. Theres a lot of things you can do to prevent this infection as well as others. The best thing you can do is washing your hands. Most viruses, colds and flu need your hands, they get onto your hands and get into the mouth because we touch our mouths and foreheads and eyes all the time every day. Thats the entry point. If we wash our hands, we are preventing a lot of infections getting into us. Other things we can do if we are coughing we cover our cough, prevent spread to other people. Now when the school bell rings, at 23 Elementary Schools, its off to another class because principals have done away with recess. They have become machines that produce data as opposed to children. So instead of 20 minutes on a playground, teachers are using the extra time to teach to the test. Because so much of the money is tied to the schools scores and their grades everybodys pressured.
