We have capacity no one else has. Our military is the best in the history of the world. And when trouble comes up anywhere in the world, they dont call beijing, they dont call moscow, they call us. So now after not seeing it come, the u. S. Is leading an International Coalition against isis and likely will be for year years. Richard, thank you very much. Were getting new reaction to the president s comments about misjudging isis and some push back to that reaction from the state department. Well, i happen to know that in baghdad the request was made from our embassy for strikes early on against isis as they were coming to the border. And this wasnt unknown by the administration. The fact is that the president dropped the ball. He dropped it two years ago in syria. He dropped it over the last 14 months with isis and trying to blame everyone but himself. Weve been aware of isil just like khorasan. But the strength they built has grown over the past six to eight months. Weve taken action over that time as well. John boehner doubts that president obama will be able to keep his pledge of no american boots on the ground against isis. Take a listen. The end of the day, i think its going to take more than air strikes. To scare drive them out of there. At some point, somebodys boots have to be on the ground. If no one will step up, we recommend american boots on the ground . We have no choice. They intend kill us. If we dont destroy them first, well pay the price. Overwhelming majority of americans seem to agree with boehner. A new poll nearly three quarters of americans think well actually send in our troops. The poll also found 45 support sending in u. S. Troops to fight isis. Joining me live now daily beast columnist michael. So much to talk about. Were glad youre on. I want some of your perspective here. Lets talk about the interview the president did with 60 minutes and the over under estimating isis here and the iraqi forces. Yeah, thank you, tamron. Its interesting to hear these things coming out of a president s mouth. But on the other hand, its not like we didnt know this. Right. I forget what mosul was, but whenever mosul happened and isis stormed in there and the iraqi army turned and ran, most americans who Pay Attention to news anyway have known it since then. Experts who toll the region have noted since long before that. Its not the first intelligence failure in the history of the United States, sad to say. Its probably one of the more dramatic ones. Petter king makes the point the president drops the ball. He said he dropped the ball two years ago. We know the debate ha has gone on whether or not to arm the Free Syrian Army rebels. And now here we are at this point. He said not just a failure of regarding mosul, to your point weve been watching and richard has done incredible reporting on isis and the development of the or it organization. Were going back to the debate of whether to arm the army. I sort of agree with peter king. I would have favored personally the president doing something to arm the Syrian Rebels long before he did. But here is the question that peter king sidesteps. There was no public support in the United States of america for doing that back then. And the president has to pay some attention to public opinion. Peter king said he should lead. You give a speech and change public opinion. Maybe you can but maybe you cant. And when obama was talking about syria in 2013, after assad gassed his people, there was no public support in america. Youll recall there was no public support in england. So it would have been hard to do then. It took those beheadings to galvanize American Public opinion to what the president was. I bet you president king would have reacted similarly. To your point, you look at the polls and we look at trend lines as far as stories of the American People were engaged in. People got engaged after they saw the horrific images and the brutality. Its one thing to hear theres a brutal group moving through and killing people over there, and i think thats how sometimes people process international stories. And then you see the face of an american and other westerners being killed. It changed things dramatically in terms of public opinion, and so you see it now in these poll numbers you just cited, tamron, where most people think that were going to end up having troops Ground Troops in there, and most people dont get supported but a popularity does support it by 35 to 47. Im not sure enthusiastically but people understand the stakes here. They do. I want to play another clip from the president defending the fact while we want to get rid of assad, that the bombings may actually be helping let me play that. I recognize that the contradiction in a contradictory land and circumstances. In terms of immediate threats to the United States, isil, Khorasan Group those folks could kill americans. Its more than assad at this point. What im saying is theyre all connected but theres a more immediate concern that has to be dealt with. And michael, you have written what were doing remains the least bad option available. But you also saw the new remarks from speaker baoehner who he sad he believes there become a point that american boots will be on the ground. Yeah. And mildly surprised to hear him say that. As to assad, you know, tamron, its true that isis and some of the other groups are more direct threats to the United States. Assad is not going kill any american. Hes not going to shoot down any american planes. He knows what would happen to the air Defense System if he tried to do that. It is still an Administration Goal that assad be removed from power. You know, hes responsible for 200,000 deaths. The administration wants him out. It is a really unfortunate paradox in the short term what isis seizes ground its probably going to succeed it to the assad army. Thats the idea of building up the rebel forces and the Free Syrian Army. Thank you. The secret service is facing even more heat this morning amid a new report that the agency grossly mishandled a 2011 incident where a gunman fired several shots outside the white house residence. According to the Washington Post, one of the bullets smashed a second floor window outside the first familys living room and at least seven others struck the upstairs residence. The post said it took agents four days to realize the white house had been hit and only after a house keeper discovered the broken glass. The president and first lady were traveling at the time. Their youngest daughter was home. The secret service is pushing back against a report in a state reading in part. This report comes adds the agency as you all know is facing scrutiny over the umm precedented Security Breach just ten days ago where a fence jumper made it through the white house door. Nbc White House Correspondent chris january jansing joins us live. People heard gunfire and they were told it was construction nearby. As a matter of fact, tamron, they were certain they heard gunshots in fact, they responded and rushed to respond. One of them pulled a handgun, the snipers got at the ready. They were looking through their scopes. There were other things that were happening at the same time. There were officers who were very close about 15 yards away from where the shooting cured when they heard the shots. They got out of their car and smelled gun powdered and saw indications that bullets had been fired. At the same time there was a woman tweeting she was in a cab and the person in front of her, the car in front of her a man inside fired five shots a the white house. We know at it was at least seven. She said it took awhile for police to respond. But then as you pointed out, there was the order to stand down. It was surprising to a lot of people in the secret service and it was only later in an internal investigation where some agents said, well, they were concerned if they pushed back against this decision by their superiors. In fact, of great concern apparently to the first family itself. Not only was sasha home and Michelle Obamas mother, but the first family wasnt informed for awhile. Apparently it lead to some very difficult words certainly between the president and some other white house officials. So, look, police might not never have caught up with the suspect had he not gotten into a car crash. Hes serving a long prison sentence. The information come on the heel of two other incidents recently. One of which you pointed out was which someone scaled the fence with a knife and got through the front door of the white house. It will be tough questioning tomorrow for Julia Pearson, the head of the secret service when she goes before congressional committee, tamron. And getting back to your point regarding the first familys reaction, chris, to the incident and the fact they were not told for several days, according to the post, quote, the first lady was upset when her husband arrived home five days later from australia. The president was fuming. Two former aids said, not only had their aids failed to immediately alert the first family, but the secret service stumbled in its response. Do we know more where there was a delay to alert them given their child there was and the motherinlaw. Obviously the decision had been made by some people higher up in the secret service that this was Something Else. One of the reports was that it might have been actual gunfire between gangs. There are people who scoff at that and say, look, its not an area where theres gang fire. This is a tourist area of washington, d. C. , and, look, every first lady ive ever spoken to when the decision was made to run for president , if you have children an concern is the safety of the children. I talked about it with laura bush and jimmy carter. You bring Young Children into the white house you know its a target. Obviously you can understand the concern. There may not have been anything that the secret service could have done to prevent someone from pulling up, rolling down a window, and firing shots. It is what happened in the aftermath including that information to that was the problem. Thank you so much. Joining me now politico senior correspondent. Thank you for your time here. As chris mentioned, the secret Service Director will testify before a house committee. Lets start from the latest report from the post a. A bullet goes there u the window. The housekeeper has to notice. Youve been to the white house. Ive been there behind the scenes. There are people around all day long examining every inch of security. In is not about piling on the secret service but certainly when you look at the image alone, what answers do they need to provide here . Well, and of course, it wasnt just one bullet. But the bullet youre talking about was one that hit around the truman balcony. The balcony famous at the white house. Which is one of the Favorite Places of the first family. It makes them feel like theyre more at home and relaxed. At any point they could be there. Its hard to see how he would feel that way after the incident. This was a bullet that did some damage to the glass and to a piece of concrete. And was discovered by a house keeper. Not by the secret service. Even though there was some attention to this incident internally at the time. Its one of the things that leads to more questions here. When we now know that the secret service knew there were other bullets that seemed to have been fired or maybe there was some incident there wasnt a full inspection at the white house after wards was a big question that people will be asking the secret Service Director. There are a lot of questions that can be asked about the fence jumper 2014. Some of the behavior. Weve seen in columbia, for example, and netherlands. Going back to the leadership question. Do you believe well see members of Congress PressJulia Pearson more on that . Is this a leadership problem . Is it a staffing problem . A training issue . Were not entirely sure. Julia pearson is relatively new on the job. She came in after the attention of the secret service after the prostitution scandal in colombia. It may not be on her directly. I think the point that chris raised is right. You cant always account for crazy people who may pull up the car and fire bullet at the white house. You can have security measures. You cant account for people in the mania jump the fence. We see some of the response to the latest incident of the guy who got into the front door being extra barriers up around the white house grounds. But we dont know exactly what the longterm response is going to be from the white house and how it works. An extra barrier that was 3feet tall that was tethered together. Many people would not necessarily see that as an extra measure. They may process it as simply trying to smoke and mirror the situation well, its the initial response. Weve been told that the secret service is working on something larger. Theyre balancing the question of how to make that area assessable to tourists and other people that need to get through, and also have the security measures there as they need to be. Thank you so much for your time. And so how do you factor in some of the debate that is happening regarding isis and the president s latest interview that is already created, i guess, an opening some might believe for a few congressman to criticize him . It doesnt take a lot of openings for anyone to criticize anyone in washington, d. C. To me president obamas revelation wasnt a lot of big surprising news at all. Its been said by one of the top intelligence officials, James Clapper who said we underestimated isis. The course of people in the news media also said who is isis back in june . This is a story and isis is very Quick Development was one of the reasons were talking about them today they were under estimated bay lot of people including the iraqi military. Absolutely, mark. Well speak with you tomorrow. And we turn now to your money a new survey that shows bank fees for Certain Services are surging. In fact, the survey by bankrate. Com found the average fee for using an out of network atm climbed 5 in just the past year to a new high of 4. 35 per transaction average Overdraft Fees surged in the past few months to a record high of 32. 74. Joining me live bankrate. Com financial analyst. Thank you for your time. The overdraft youll here people say its your fault. You should balance your checkbook better. But 32. 75. Thats a lot of money for the banks. It is and its just the first time you do that. Some banks have a tiered structure. So the second, third, or fourth overdraft you have could cost you even more. I think the important take away for consumers here is the fact that it is avoidable. Keep accurate tabs on the available account balance particularly with mobile technology. Set up a link so your money covers any shortfall. You dont have to borrow from the bank. You can sign up for email or texas alerts. There are ways to avoid. It the sarcastic person said it wasnt avoidable when they needed a bail out. But with that said, going to these per transactions for atm. I dont think thats always avoidable. Sometimes you need the cash. Your ban is not around. Not all the bank branchs flourish with atms on every corner. And youre being penalized 5 more than last year to get your money. And up 23 over the last five years. Its not just the 12 months. We see it going up year in year out at a pace faster than inflation. The situation youre out of town, nowhere near your banks atm. Next time you use your debit card you can get cash back. The tsa takes your tooth paste or something. You have to buy new tooth paste, slide the debit card, get cash back. Sometimes they dont let you get more than 20 40rd. Yeah. But theres no charge. And, you know, other transactions you do you can be pulling cash out. Another thing is a lot of Smaller Community banks Credit Unions and online banks even though they dont have big atm networks they may belong to atm alliances that have 30 or 40,000 atms. Look into that. It you find yourself paying the fees look into what can you do to be a part of one of the networks or download the app from your bank so you can scout out locations. If they can get away with 4. 35 per transaction people at home will say 5 by next year then it continues to tick up. I mean, is there ever a point where the outrage the consumer outrage will stop the banks from upping the fees. Particularly with getting your own cash out . Well, i expect its going to continue to rise. But the consumer holds the ultimate power. You can vote with your feet. Take your business someplace else. Because there are plenty of other banks, Credit Unions, online banks that have access to large atm neshs. You use for free. And theyre touting that. Theyre trying to earn your business. Thank you so much. We appreciate you joining us. Doctors are trying to figure out why a group of children is showing symptoms that include paralysis. Developing now in florida a key state witness is testifying in the michael dunn retrial today. A former associate medical examiner who was an important witness during the first trial in february. Dunn is accused of hitting and killing 17yearold jordan davis in 2012 when dunn parked next to jordan and his friends at the gas station and got into a dispute over loud music. The first trial dunn was found guilty of three attempted seconddegree murder at shooting at the other teens in the car and one count of firing a car into a car. A jury could not decide on the firstdegree murder charge in the death of davis. A mistrial was declared on that charge. Joining me now managing parter in of martin and martin law firm. Thank you for joining us. Lets look at the natural question. Will there be evidence provided in this case different than we saw in the first trial . I think were going it see some things that are different in this trial. Dunn has a new defense attorney and the attorney has a different approach to his case. Shes narrowed the issues and really wants to hone in on her core theory that of selfdefense. That dun acted out of selfdefense when he believed that jor canadan davis was adva on him and davis created were going to see an Expert Witness come forward and talk about the fact that the door was open at the time that dunn shot into that suv where those four young men were. And that is a part of this theory that, again, your dan was advancing on dunn at the time the shots were fired. We look at dunn hiring a new seasoned defense attorney. How does impact the case, you think, if at all . I think its going to be significant. The other attorney, i think the defense got confusing and oftentimes when jjurors are hea different points t difficult to hone in. I think the attorneys approach is to stream line the evidence and really hone in on the issues of selfdefense. Theres a verbal altercation. Jordan threatened dunn said he was going to, you know, kill him and then he actually opened the car door and advanced at him. And also, were going it hear a lot about whether there was something that looked like a weapon that was pointed out of the car at dunn. Weve heard dunn talk about him believing that jordan had a gun and that he pointed a gun. We know that there was never a gun found with respect to this case but were going it hear that defense attorney really, really hone in on the issue that the police did not secure the adjacent parking lot and there could have been an opportunity for the young men to ditch a gun. The first juror had seven whites. The new jury 10 whites less diverse. Seven of the jurors are men in this case. Seven of the jurors are men in this. We know its a great amount of focus for obvious reasons on the composition of the jury. Yes. I think thats going to play a significant role in this case. Were talking about florida. Were talking about, you know, a state that believes in stand your ground. Thats the law. Thats the controlling law and selfdefense. Were going to hear about, you know, the rap music, the loud music. Weve heard dunn describe jordan and his friends as thugs. Race isnt overtly a part of the case. It will come into the case. I think were going have the jurors are going have to wrestle with was it white man in fear of his life from this young africanamerican man who was in this, you know, vehicle with three other young men playing this loud music. And the first jurors couldnt decide. They could not decide that, you know, this was murder. And so thats why were at the second trial stage. There thank you so much for your time. We greatly appreciate it. The cdc investigating whether a rare virus affecting hundreds of children nationwide is connected to paralysis in some children. Almost a dozen kids in colorado are showing poliolike symptoms. Here is nbc Halle Jackson with more. The cdc said its concerned because the cluster of kids in colorado. Mostly children across 40 states plus d. C. It is a bit of a mystery right now. But just like any other mystery. We have clues. The doctor said the nine children in colorado are up to date on polio vaccinations. The cdc and others are trying to figure out if theres a link to the virus. A similar cluster of cases hit california in 2012. Thats when this little boy had trouble blooeting before his left leg stopped working. He was never tested but diagnosed with polio like symptom. She understands what the families in colorado are going through. My whole purpose is to let the families know theres hope. Hope this medical mystery may be solved soon. The cdc wants doctors nationwide to report seeing any similar cluster of kids dealing with the polio like symptoms. Six of the nine children treated at the hospital have been charged. The university of Michigan Football coach is facing tough questions not just for his teams losing record this season, but for the coachs decision that he made regarding his quarterback in the Fourth Quarter of the game against minnesota saturday. Shane morris took a scary helmet to helmet hit. Moments later, he appeared to be dazed and grab another player to steady himself. The coach left him in the game and only after morris threw an incomplete pass on the next play was he taken out. He only sat out for a few plays and minutes after, he was sent back in and he had to be taken off the field in a cart. It drew almost instant criticism with commentators calling it appalling. When he was asked about why he left morris on the field, the coach said he did not know if the quarterback suffered a concussion, but said he was confident proper medical decisions were made regarding his health and noted that morris wanted to keep playing. He said he was only taken out because he aggravated an injury to his leg. What does your gut tell you . Do you agree with the head coachs decision to allow the quarterback to stay in the game .
