The number of asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic has gone up. I am making 20 patients a day to call them and tell them their tests were positive. The 20 and 30yearolds can get infected and end up in icu, they are more likely to come out of that than folks in their 70s and 80s. Thats still the case. We are seeing more of the young people being hospitalized as compared to a month ago. Thats the tragedy in all of this. People can make decisions that could decimate entire families whether they realize it or not. Because you might not get infected if you get exposed but how can you be sure you wont. You might be healthy and survive it without complications, but you might not. The virus doesnt care what you believe. Its not a political issue. We begin this hour with voices from medical workers on the front lines of the pandemic. Virus cases continue to soar and the outlook in many areas, especially the south is worsening. Meanwhile the president and the white house seem desperate to down play the crisis and focus instead of divisive, cultural and political issues that usually rile up the base. Today the president attacked nascar for its decision to ban confederate flags, and he said the only black driver, bubba wallace, who apologize for the noose found in his garage. This comes after the president delivered some divisive july fourth holiday speeches, as one Washington Post headline red, in trumps new version of american carnage, the threat is not immigrants or other nations, its other americans. Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of you are founders and deface our most sacred memorials and unleash Violent Crime in our cities. Make no mistake this left wing cultural revolution is designed to overthrow the american revolution. The violent mayhem we have seen in the streets and cities that are run by liberal democrats in every case is the predictable result of years of extreme indoctrination and bias and education, journalism and other cultural institutions. We are now in the process of defeating the radical left, the marxists, the anarchists and agitators, the looters and people who in many instances have absolutely no clue what they are doing. Those werent campaign rallies. Those were official White House Events over the fourth of july weekend. I know we are living in wonky times, but usually theres a difference in the Campaign Speech and the speech from the white house. Also the president baselessly claimed 99 of the infections are totally harmless. The white house is urging the country to reopen even though 20 states have paused or began reopening roll backs. Back with me now from the white house is my msnbc news colleague, leigh, and an msnbc political analyst, also donna edwards, former democratic congresswoman from maryland, and a fellow on the hoover institution. Am i right to say that the message from the white house is the virus is here, lets just move on . Yep, thats exactly right, katie. Thats what officials told me and some of my colleagues at msnbc, that was going to be the way the white house was going to start framing the message about coronavirus this week. We are now seeing the president do that although he took it to a different level saying 99 of cases are harmless and thats not exactly what his aides would describe it. But the gist is essentially the virus is here and not going anywhere so we need to figure out how to live with it. That means by that they mean get on with our lives and keep the economy open so part of the message is to really emphasize to a majority of americans they are unlikely to survive the virus if they contract it, and they are trying to take the fear out of the americans of contracting the virus. And the president took that to a level some of the president s own allies would agree with, and we heard from the white house and press of secretary and chief of staff defending the president s comments and pointing to the fact that the likelihood that somebody dies from this particularly under 65 years old that does not have preconditions is relatively low. Thats the message. I think you will see them points to therapeutics and a new study expected to come out this week and really just all again to make the case that the virus is here and it doesnt mean we have to stop our lives, we can move forward and layout the blueprint for how to do that. There are 130,000 roughly americans dead. There are warnings from dr. Fauci we could see as many as 100,000 cases per day in this country. If you do get the virus and you survive it and its a mild case, you still might be suffering from weeks on end. God forbid you go to the hospital and come out with hospital bills. John, let me ask you this, the president is acting as if its another political hoax that the democrats or his adversaries are trying to stop him from winning the election, as he asks the American Public to ignore the evidence right in front of him, the evidence in front of their eyes once again as he has done so many times in the past . The point that you and carol were making, katie, the white house has shifted their message and trying to focus on the mortality rate, suggesting, yes, its a small percentage of people that contract this and die particularly if you are not an elderly person. It over simplifies for many of the people that get this. Friends of mine who have had it who, you know, months ago, who thankfully turned the corner and will survive, but they are still nowhere near feeling themselves. The white house is asking a lot for the American Public to take that message. Thats what they are doing, because the president is turning the page and blaming china for its or gin, and then say what we need to do now is reopen the economy and reopen American Society as we know it. Thats yet another example where he is trying to shift focus and turn to culture wars, and engage in racebaiting which he has done repeatedly in the last few days, and right now if the polls are to be believed, its not working. The American Public is not buying it. We have seen this crisis, the pandemic when combined with the protests in the streets, they are testing how the president can handle things and so far the American Public doesnt think its working. Lets talk about that, because the president had wanted to run on the economy, and the Campaign Still believes the economy if it turns around is the best bet for reelection, and the economy is not good right now and the outlook is not good either. As john just said, hes going to the culture wars, and today the White House Press secretary could not say where the president stood on the confederate flag. The president may think that worked for him, the culture wars in 2016. Could it work for him again in 2020 . What does the Republican Party want right now . Well, look, i think you have seen a number of republicans today basically try to distance themselves from the president seeming to embrace some of the confederate imagery. You are right, i think the culture wars were an advantage for the president in 2016. I dont see them playing in the same way, at least in the way that the president is using those culture wars in a 2020 election. He seems to be appealing to a smaller and smaller constituency when really at this phase of the campaign he needs to be thinking about how to broaden his appeal and particularly with those that live in the suburbs, i cant imagine this messaging is all that palatable. Its interesting, the president is going to a place where hes comfortable and where he knows he understands the message but its not clear to me thats going to be the way he wins this campaign or turns this election around. If the president was watching this or one of his supporters were watching, they might say you said the same thing in 2016 and, boy, were you wrong and the polls said he would lose in 2016, and boy, were you wrong. What makes this different . First of all, he has a different opponent. I think joe biden will be much harder to put in the same box than Hillary Clinton was in 2016. You have seen the sleepy joe moniker is not sticking as much, and they are having to change course, and another issue is the degree to which the president is not seeking to triangulate with this message. In 2016 you will recall, because you covered that campaign, as we got towards the fall the president was able to focus in more on core messages that we are going to be appealing to a broader segment of the population. Not to say he cant do that now, but at this phase of the campaign, if he continues along the strategy, its not one that is going to allow him to expand his appeal perhaps in the way he did four years ago. Donna, what is the best strategy for joe biden right now . I have spoken to some in the campaign that say joe biden not being out on the campaign trail has made it really difficult for them to run against joe biden the way they ran against Hillary Clinton, to try and run against him the same way . I think joe biden is running exactly the campaign he needs to run right now. He has messages on how he would handle the coronavirus. His messages around race and race relations. His messages around recovering economy and building it for the future, and he has an apoeoppon that continues to fail. Donald trump failures at this point are epic. Only 37 of the American Public believes he has handled the coronavirus pandemic responsibly. Fewer than 40 of americans believe that he has a strong approval that that is his disapproval number. Its a epic failure on the part of the president. Now the culture wars the president is embarking on, hes running a 1920s campaign and in 2020 it wont work. He was a novelty in 2016 but hes not a novelty now, and we have come to know him and his racist and inflammatory red r k rhetoric. Are those that are trying to get him on some sort of message that isnt a culture war message, a message of empathy towards americans struggling because of the coronavirus, and those struggling with racial inequity in this country, what is the feeling from the advisors and the staffers that you have been talking to . When you would talk to people around the president early on when there were protests in the street and the country was at the height of civil unrest, right after George Floyds death, they were trying to put policies in front of him and we had from our own reporting that that was very difficult, and he was talking about these are not my voters talking about the rioters in the street. Now we have seen thats what he has chosen to do, go for the culture wars. The president is an incumbent this time, and the president s opponent, joe biden, is very different from Hillary Clinton, and his abilities are far higher than Hillary Clintons were. You have seen a number of people around the president who have been egging him on to embrace the culture war and now he has. John, i want to ask you a question because you covered the campaign and you covered the white house, and i was speaking to somebody today for the first time in many years didnt feel so bullish on the president s reelection prospects, and that was the first time i had heard Something Like that from somebody so close to the campaign and the president. Are you hearing the confidence you heard in 2016 or throughout this administration, or have things has the tone changed for your conversations . It has changed somewhat. Look, to a person involved in the white house and the campaign, they point that theres still time left and they are right about that, still four months to go. They liked the jobs numbers, and they believe there are twists and turns we cant foresee going forward, and joe biden, him being off stage is beneficial for the democrats at this point. Towards the fall the Vice President will have to be out there more and they think that will be good for them. There has been a lot of time since i have been covering trump and certainly since he took office, and they were comforting themselves, but its not that bad and the president was down only by a few points, and sometimes within the margin of error or just outside it in the states he has to win. However, what happened in the last ten days those margins have grown. Hes down in places like arizona by seven or eight points. Hes down in michigan where some in the campaign are willing to write that state off. Hes down in florida, a state he cannot win without. Theres a sense of a course corrections needed. The debate is now do you go full war on the culture wars or try to find another message, and then try desperately to run up joe bidens negatives and revive the china attack, but so far that has not worked. As a candidate he is not able to go pennsylvania and hold a state rally, and the democratic governors doesnt seem to be giving permission. John was just saying what Campaign Officials told him is there is still a lot of time left. We are in july and the election is in november. What do you foresee what are the challenges that you foresee for joe biden as we head towards november . Well, i mean, look, i dont think that the biden camp and certainly not democrats should take anything for granted. We saw what happened in 2016. I think its going to be really important to continue to galvanize voters to keep them energized coming out of 2018 and coming out of the primary season to make sure they show up to vote. I think its going to be important for democrats to Pay Attention to whats happening at polling places, what is happening with systems like mailin ballots to make sure every voter that wants to vote can cast their ballot in a way they want to. I think for joe biden, not to let up on donald trump, to continue to try as were as possible to step up attacks on him for his handling of the coronavirus, to step up attacks on him on his dealing with race relations, and a broad swath of the American Public believes biden has the upper hand. And build on the future that is not built on dividing the American Public against one another. I think joe biden is demonstrating that kind of character and hes got to get out of the box. We know thats going to happen over the next four months. Don edwards, carol lee, and everybody thank you for starting us off this hour. Coming up ahead, new coronavirus questions and concerns. Could it be more contagious than we initially thought . Could it be more airborne than we initially thought . We have a couple experts to answer those questions, next. Later, a monumental clash has american deals with its past and present racism. President trump is vowing to protect the confederate statues. At least 18 saw record cases or record hospitalizations over the holiday weekend. Governors in many of those states are pausing or reversing plans to reopen. One of the new epicenters is texas. Moments ago that state reported nearly 8,700 people are hospitalized, a new record, double than what it was two weeks ago. Officials in two largest cities, austin and houston are warning their hospitals could be overwhelmed in weeks or days. This as more scientists surged the World Health Organization to recognize the virus as airborne. I am joined now by houstonbased emergency room doctor, and an epidemiologist and senior scholar at Johns HopkinsSenior Health for security. Thank you for being here, ladies. Doctor, first to you. The case numbers in texas are continuing to rise and breaking records nearly by the day. Is the governor there doing enough to stop the spread and flatten this curve . I was really glad to see the mandatory mask order that went into place last week and i think thats an important step towards making sure we are flattening the curve. The county judge in Harris County where houston is located also mandated or suggested that everybody should avoid nonessential activities. We all got a text message on our phone saying to avoid going out as much as we can, and if the spread is spreading via aerosols we are going to need to stem this. And is it enough to limit gatherings inside to beyond 50 capacity. Is that enough . A lot of restaurants are seeing covid cases in their employees and we know masks protect those around the person wearing the masks, not the person wearing the masks unless they are the n95 masks. If diners are not wearing the masks they can expose the workers. They are a group i am particularly concerned about right now. Doctor, lets talk about where the virus is airborne. There are a number of countries urging the w. H. O. To classify it as airborne. What do we know right now . Theres not anything new, and what you are hearing is a debate about words and how we think about the virus. What they are essentially saying is people who are next to each other and talking or singing and doing some kind of activities may be able to produce finer articles of particles that stay in the air longer than droplets that fall to the ground. The idea of being close to somebody in indoor and having extended contact with risky nonetheless. We have not heard anything new about the virus, but we are looking at clarity about what kinds of transmissions occurs. We are looking at what kind of different personal protective equipment we need to respond to this, and i think theres some debate in clinical environments as to whether the Higher Quality masks that protect people are truly needed. Im so sorry to interrupt you. The delays can be exstraouhard end. I apologize. Lets talk about not just the transmissionability but the symptoms. How do you know when somebody is carrying the virus . There has been a study on the autopsy of the coronavirus victims, its not just a virus that attacks the lungs but its a vascular virus that attacks the blood vessels and can affect blood clotting. What does that mean to those that might have signs and symptoms of the disease and how hard it is to differentiate between those sick or achy or sore or might have a heart condition, and those that might be struggling with covid . Right, so for most people when you think about symptoms its still the cold symptoms that we talk about, the sore throat and other things. What you are referring to is in clinical environments we are learning that this virus can cause a spectrum of illnesses that manifest in different patients, so when i hear comments about most people that get this dont die, that may be true but it also glosses over the fact that some people get quite ill from the virus regardless and it can have longterm consequences. Bottom line for people, if you are concerned you should absolutely speak to a health care professional. We cant know if you have the virus until you get tested and thats why expansion to testing is so important. Just because you dont have the classic symptoms like a fever or a cough, it doesnt mean you do not have the virus. Doctor, last one to you. You are in houston. Two weeks ago the caseload wasnt as high as it is now. What are your expectations for what its going to look like in hospitals two weeks from now . I am pretty worried about what our hospitals are go fog look like, particularly our intensive care units. One thing we know about Covid Patients is they dont tend to be patients in the icu for just one day or two days. They might be in the icu for ten days, 14 days, three weeks, and thats not altogether unusual. Were going to still have the influx of patients we have been seeing over the past few weeks in our hospitals are we are continuing to see new patients so its important for all of our hospitals to Work Together and do what we can to increase capacity not only in terms of beds but all the doctors and nurses and all the humans we need to take care of the patients and beds. One more question about testing. What we saw in los angeles today is there was a giant testing site shutdown for the holiday and los angeles is having a hard time giving everybody to wants a test to get a test, and we spoke to a person in arizona that said it can take multiple days to get the results of testing, which makes it difficult to Contract Trace if they were going to successfully do it in the first place. The testing situation in houston right now, where is it . We have seen a lot of improvements in our testing since this outbreak first started in march. I still feel like we are not where i would like us to be in terms of testing. I think testing should be extremely widely available for our patients in all situations. Particularly in houston, we have a high population of the uninsured. They dont have a primary care doctor or other places to go, so we need to continue to ramp up the testing to capture everybody who has coronavirus in the area. The testing, are you getting results fast enough . It depends on which location is doing the testing. There are a lot of places that have faster results now than we had in march, but we also have places that have a oneturn around day in our area. Thank you very much. Angry mobs are trying to tear down statues of our founders, deface our most sacred memorials and unleash a wave of Violent Crime in our cities. The American People are strong and proud and they will not allow our country and all of its values, history and culture to be taken from them. Welcome back. President trump issued that warning friday night in front of mt. Rushmore as cities and states across the country reexamine confederate statues and monuments in their communities. That includes richmond, virginia, and that was the captain capital of confederate statue. With me is the mayor. The president described angry mobs tearing down statues. Is that how you would describe the movement . Thats not how i would describe it. We took down a couple statues this week, and we started to take control of our destiny and what we wanted to do with the monuments and statues of confederacy. Out of an abundance of caution and a matter of public safety, i started removing monuments here in the city of richmond and we will complete that task next week. And also i would say this, its past time that we remove those monuments. These are symbols of oppression and hate and for the president to classify this as the culture of america and the culture of my city, i think hes absolutely wrong. I wouldnt expect anything less from the divider and chief, at a time when we should be bringing the country together when we are most vulnerable, he has gone back to the playbook once again to divide, divide, divide. The president is making this a partisan issue and are you finding it to be a partisan issue to the people in your city . Not at all. Its a unifying city here in the city of richmond. We are no longer where we were 100 plus years ago. When we complete the removal of the monuments this week, we will be the former capital of the confederacy. We now can be the capital of compassion and equity. We can design the few sur that we choose to. I speak for a number of richmonders that its time to move past a lost cause and embrace a righteous cause. What about the statue of confederate general robert e. Lee. What is happening with that . Its owned by the commonwealth of virginia, at least thats what we believe and currently theres an injunction in place that halts the removal, and we doing our part to make sure the governor can remove the robert e. Statue. Its the granddaddy of them all and its six stories high and a statue that was definitely erected to put black and brown people in their place. Definitely a show of intimidation. Theres another issue that is getting attention and that is the name of washingtons football team. Governor northam of virginia thinks they should play that game and they play in virginia and have a practice facility in richmond. Where do you fall on that issue . I absolutely agree with the governor. I think its a time for the washington football tpaeeam to change their name. Its offensive, and i am not the only one that shares that, you look at fedex and they share the believe its time to move on. I am glad to see the nfl finally step up after missteps and shortcomings after Colin Kaepernick and his silent peaceful protests, and now its time for the Washington Football Team to catch up. What do you make of the president trying to get involved in this and saying they should not change their name . Who is the president trying to persuade, or not that, who is he speaking to when he says that . You know, i think there are some people that will still hold on to these beliefs, who dont understand what tolerance means sometimes. I think thats what hes speaking to in terms of this election. I dont think it can be a winning strategy. You cant win the president see just by dividing people. This is a time to bring people together and we are at our most vulnerable. We have a pandemic and an economic downturn and social unrests in our streets, and you would think the commander and chief would hear the outcry from the Peaceful Protesters that walked and marched in cities like mine across the country, and instead it has landed on deaf ears, and its my hope come november we will have a president that listens and move us forward in a positive way. There are a number of republican lawmakers that are in agreement with the confederate symbolism, and republican lawmakers believe changing the names of a number of military bas bases would be a good idea, and theres a sustained urgency, or we have seen a couple weeks or months of sustained urgency around this issue, do you think it will maintain the urgency through the summer and through the fall up to the election . I do think so. I think were a critical flash point in americas history. I think richmond is at the center of that. I look at the removal of our monuments and thats a great first step. I think leaders like myself and all across the country we have to go the extra mile to ensure that not only do we remove the monuments but the systemic racism we find whether it in the health care system, the legal system, and i always said the removal of the monuments, its like removing the berlin wall. When the wall fell the system fell as well. We need to do our part and make sure systemic racism falls as well. We thank you for coming on and giving your insight. We appreciate it. Thank you. Health care workers have spoken out about the heavy mental toll of caring for Covid Patients. While theyre seeing the effects of the virus up close, many people from Covid Patients to those just stuck at home are experiencing the Mental Health impacts of living in a pandemic. Joining me now to talk about this is dr. Jessica gold, a practicing psychiatrist and assistant professor at Washington University in st. Louis at the st. Louis school of medicine. Thank you so much for being here. This is affecting a lot of people, from all different walks of life, who are at home or going to work or on the frontlines. You name it. What do you say to people who are struggling mentally right now . Yeah. If you just watched that video, its hard not to feel for everybody going through this. But feelings are normal, there are no wrong feelings, that this is a really hard thing for everyone, that anything you can feel, from anger to anxiety to fear is normal. If you feel it, you are entitled to that feeling. There are those that are feeling it more intensely than others, and there has been reports of suicides going up. How do loved ones recognize the signs of somebody who might be having a very difficult time dealing with all the uncertainty around us . Yeah. I mean, i think the things we have people isolating, its hard there are definitely ways that our lives have substantially changed. Are they still wanting to be around you or your family, are they still wants to do things at work . The longer that goes on, if its more than a day, that might be worrisome. Is there something that we can do in our everyday lives to make ourselves feel better . Is it as simple as going outside for a walk . Yeah, you know, i think being outside is great. Exercise is great. Wear a mask. Im going to say that right now. You saw those health care workers. Part of the reason theyre so distraught, a lot of this is preventable.
