As we unpack the bomb shells in Bob Woodwards new book which reveals a white house in the throws of a quote nervous breakdown as advisers try to contain a president they see as a lying impulsive danger to both the office of the presidency and at times the country itself. This isnt hyperbole. This is from the woodward book. Woodwards book is titled fear. According to his publicly cyst, everything thats been reported about the book is an accurate account of whats in it. Buckle up because heres whats in it according to the Washington Post. The president s legal Team Reportedly told mueller that their client was basically incapable f telling the truth, in other words, he was incapable of not perfect jurying himself. He reenacted a mock interview they conducted with their client. In this mock interview, the president lied, stumbled, contradicted himself, lost his cool. Heres what the president s lawyer at the time john dow reportedly told mueller. Im not going to sit there and let the president look like an idiot and you publish the transcript because everything leaks in ball game and the guys overseas are going to say i told you he was an idiot, i told you he was a gd dumbbell. What are we dealing with this idiot for. He said he told the president dont testify, it is that or an orange jump suit. Anybody that knows john doud, nasrallah who he speaks. In extreme hyperbole sometimes. According to cnn, woodward calls him an expletive liar, he wasnt the only member of the inner circle that held him in such hoe regard. John kelly said were in crazy town. Chief economic adviser gary cohen pulled things off the president s desk because of National Security concerns. As for this president s view of the rule of law, he is said to have lambasted Jeff Sessions as quote, mentally retarded, unquote. In an shoe published moments ago, the president questioned woodwards credibility. John kelly called the book total bs, john doud is pushing back as well. It will be hard for the white house to go after woodward too hard. He has a recording of the president praising him as a straight shooter. Bring in the panel, steve kornacki, zerlina maxwell, and Michael Steele, msnbc political analyst, former rnc chair and also on the d. C. Train to new york. I teased the recording before i let you have at this. Lets play the recording. I spent a lot of time on this, talked to lots of people. All right, good. And as you know and are living, we are at a pivot point in history. Right. I would have liked to have done that, i maximized my effort and somehow it didnt get to you. It is really too bad because nobody told me about it and i would have loved to have spoken to you. You know im very open to you. Youve always been fair. I have become familiar with taped conversations of President Trump and that phrase nobody told me about it was the exact phrase he used with omarosa. Oh. Youre not here any more . Nobody told me about that. I have a feeling we know his code for yeah. This was we were never going to do it. Steve kornacki, a woodward book making the white house crazy is not new, but this is a different kind of white house and these are a whole different set of accusations. Yeah. Most amazing part of that tape you played too, by the way, when Kellyanne Conway comes in after woodward has said i talked to her. He said he puts her on the phone. Woodward reminds her we had a two and a half hour dinner, i laid this out, you said you would give me an answer, and hands the phone back to trump. This reminds me, this is woodward, a few months ago it was michael wolf, so you have a different reputation there journalististicly, but think back to things contained in that book, this is coming from woodward. That puts a different stamp on it. If you follow Bob Woodwards books, zerlina, michael, you know he has so well sourced with anybody thats a member of the military. And theres two key people with key anecdotes, one a former four star general john kelly, one is former four star general jim mattis. Thats whats dangerous with this book. We know woodward sources are probably a large chunk of them in the National Security community. Right. Thats why it validates my greatest fear since election day, that President Trump doesnt have the temperament, that was a talking point in the campaign, doesnt have fitness and acumen, he doesnt know anything about foreign policy, but isnt willing to learn anything about foreign policy. Thats validated by the book. When you have the secretary of defense hang up the phone and say im not going to follow that order, thats a dangerous precedent. Obviously in this context it was a good thing he did not follow the order of the president to go assassinate assad, but in a different context or with a future president , thats a dangerous precedent. Michael steele, does this reinforce the view of skeptical trump world who criticize never trump world and say you know what, this is why you should go work in this white house because at the end of the day, whatever you think of the president , people have been there to stop him from doing some things that needed to be stopped. Yeah, it is a very delicate line, chuck. It is very hard for people to reconcile that against what happens after they served in this white house, number one. Number two, the crazy that they have to deal with while theyre in the white house. And so yes, it is good to have a mattis and kelly there, and maybe a handful of others, but what theyre doing is taking extreme steps, not like it is in the normal course to okay, mr. President , i dont think thats a good idea, the president , youre probably right, i just had a moment. No, this is every moment. So theyre taking the extreme steps to sort of prevent this president from going off the rails. So that becomes very hard over a period of time. And the frustration is clearly evidenced by remarks that have been published. Heres what im trying to figure out, again, im not a lawyer. And i try not to play one on tv. But it seems to me john dowd and ty cobb confirmed to Robert Mueller that he obstructed justice. I am trying to figure it out, steve kornacki. They would be willing to go to mueller and say he is going to perjure himself, everything he is going to tell you is a lie, that means every other witness is more credible than him, which means i mean what was interesting there was supposedly the response that came back from mueller to that, which was according to reporting from folks that read the book which was not to fight it or contest it, not to say please reconsider or heres why you should do it, let me make my case from this standpoint. It was to say okay, i understand. And sounded like it was left at that. I guess the most generous, and im even less of a lawyer than you, most generous charitable interpretation would be what, the lawyer is saying i dont trust that he is not going to fall for one of your perjury traps . Thats a generous interpretation. Im sorry, if im the president , forget, are you being well represented . Is he representing you, your interests . I think yeah, only because if i know a client has propensity towards a particular behavior or action, i have to be responsible enough not to put him in a situation where it becomes a problem for him, if im going to represent him. It makes representation more difficult, makes the case that you have to make on his behalf harder, and harder to fight what the prosecution ultimately brings. You want to keep your client as far from that as possible. After doing that session, having trump go through all of that in that session from thats the part of this im trying to figure out, how is that good legal representation for the president . It is one thing to go through the process, another thing to tell bob mueller, man, youre going to kill him. They will do that, theyll tell the prosecution look, my client is not were not prepared to put my client in front of you for these reasons, and the prosecution may to your point go okay, or prosecution may go we really want that. Bottom line is bob mueller is thinking about what he can prove or put in a report as evidence to prove auctiobstruction, not necessarily the private conversation. He wouldnt use what john dowd. I never thought he needed trump to begin with. I think everybody else filled in so much of that narrative. I want to highlight, the white house is trying to deal with various push backs. The president did an interview with the daily caller, he is calling it another bad book, has a lot of credibility problems, i would have probably to speak to him, maybe not, he wanted to write a book a certain way. It is just nasty stuff. Maybe i wasnt given messages he called. Probably would have spoken to him if he called if he had gotten through. For some reason i didnt get the messages on it. Every question he thinks somebody would ask. This is whats interesting. I actually believe, steve kornacki, that the president is going to be upset he didnt get a chance to talk to bob mueller because the president believes he is his own best spokesperson and everybody else, he could have explained it all away. Fits in what he tells his lawyers behind the scenes, just get me in the room. And apparently thats in the bo book, too, after having this session of a fake interrogation from muellers team and to try to convince him, see, this is whats going to happen to you, in the moment he says i dont want to do the interview, months later says i can do it right, i can do it right. He has that confidence. Is bob woodward painting a picture of a president fit for office, Michael Steele in. Yes. I think what he is doing is affirming what people have quietly talked about does this portrait paint a picture of a person fit for office . Well see how people read it. It fills in a narrative that theres real concern about how this president not only stands in office and then governs. I think were all not naive enough to know that woodward might be a washington phenomenon, but at some point the accumulation of baggage cant be healthy for him. We also have Health Care Costs going up in october. People will be able to be mad about that and also be able to look at some of thor rat i ce r behavior. There are moments in which the president will have a temper tantrum on twitter, lash out at staff. I think some of the interpersonal behavior is more problematic for me because youre talking about people that have some pretty stressful, important jobs and tasks within the federal government, not just keeping us safe, keeping everything running, making sure people get their Social Security checks. I think that having somebody thats such a toxic manager at the top of the executive branch is something thats problematic not just for people that work there. Let me be provocative. I think the book paints an interesting portrait of people that work for the president than the president. I say this, steve, you follow nbc reporting, carol lees reporting. You knew the president was erratic. You knew everybody around him thought fing moron, that quote with rex tillerson. In some ways it is not a surprise. Whats more interesting to me is how the staff tries to deal with him. I think the interesting question now is what happens to mattis, what happens to kelly after the publication of the book. Kelly did put out the i didnt say that, i didnt say that. And the reporting you elude to from carol lee about what he said about donald trump behind the scenes then. There was a lot of expectation that would be the end of him, and it wasnt. I wonder now if this book will change anything. At some point if i am the president , i dont know if i can trust anybody in the white house. I wouldnt if i were him. I would be honest. I think everybody is starting to wonder, do i need to start looking out for myself. I dont think he trusts anything anyway, part of the narcissistic type, youre very paranoid. He has demonstrated that in other capacities, not just in work in the white house. Do you think it has any impact on elected republicans . No. I think theyll one off it, if subject matter, and go thats just washington. And so theyll shift and pivot from it, but on the other side of that it is going to be an issue, particularly if they lose the house. Some point in the baggage, youre paying so much to check that baggage, you need a new airplane. Stick around. Up ahead, the kavanaugh clash. There were fireworks this morning as the president s pick for the Supreme Court faces fierce opposition from democrats. Well talk about that on the other side. About that on the other side this is a story about mail and packages. And its also a story about people. People who rely on us every day to deliver their dreams theyre handing us more than mail theyre handing us their business and while we make more ecommerce deliveries to homes than anyone else in the country, we never forget. Welcome back. Day one of Brett KavanaughsSupreme Court hearing. There were speeches from dozens of people on the Judiciary Committee and those introducing him. That meeting got heated quickly as soon as the hearing was started, they wanted delay to review tens of thousands of pages of kavanaugh documents released just last night. Mr. Chairman, i agree with my colleague, senator harris. We havent been able to review, and we believe the hearing i know this is an exciting day for all of you here. Mr. Chairman. If we cannot be recognized, i move to adjourn. The American People mr. Chairman, i move to adjourn. We cannot possibly move forward, mr. Chairman. What is the rush . What are we trying to hide by not having the documents out front . Republicans refuse to adjourn and proceedings got back on track after about an hour or so of that back and forth. By the way, no one has begun to question judge kavanaugh, today was Opening Statements from anybody that wanted to give an opening statement. The actual questions, they dont begin until tomorrow. Joined now by senator sheldon whitehouse. I know you just got done. I appreciate you coming here and giving us a few minutes. Good to be with you. Let me start with a simple question. Why did you guys participate in the hearing, why didnt you walk out . I think we do a better job doing our jobs, making our arguments than by walking out. Nobody has answered the question when we walk back. If they simply push him through without our voices present in the room, i dont think that helps. Im not sure where the walking out idea has come from, but im not a proponent of it. We have a fight in front of us, and if were not in the room, thats not going to do anybody any good. The argument the left will make, those in the sort of aggressive progressive i guess we should call them, this wing of the party will say Mitch Mcconnell would have pulled out any stop to delay delay delay, do whatever it takes. Senate democrats need to do whatever it takes. Mitch mcconnell had the benefit of being the majority leader. I take your point on that. Our only tool is our voice. And i for one am proud of the way the democrats in the Judiciary Committee made our voices heard today, both about kavanaugh and about the sped up ram job procedural process that were engaged in, and about the larger problem of big corporate special interest capture of the courts. I think those are the important issues. And those are the things we need to continue to battle on today through the questioning tomorrow and the day after, through our statements afterwards, through our markup on this nominee, through the floor. We need to be deploying our voices, not running away. Doing it sounds like would be referred to as regular order is the way to look at it . Well, i dont know that regular order was what we saw today, but we were certainly i think within our rights as senators to ask for an adjournment to seek votes and we were i think given virtually no good arguments on the other side as to why those things shouldnt happen. They just ruled against us procedurally every time and moved on. What does that tell you . I take it that must be very frustrating. What it tells me is this is more politically important to the republicans than probably anything theyve done, including the big tax give away that they passed some months ago, to restore that fifth republican vote on the court so the court can keep delivering partisan 54 decisions that are such a boon for the Top Republican interests, theyre going to let nothing dissuade them, which makes our voices calling it out all the more important. Some would say voices are one innin thing, but i take your point, i dont know beyond gumming up the works a couple of days, i dont know what delaying would do, but thats what some would argue, gum up the works. This is that important to them. Make it it doesnt gum up the works not to be there. Youve got to be in the arena if youre going to have any effect. How do you win an argument about document production with the American People . I think by continuing to emphasize i had a democratic colleague say that she had been home and that a lot of people in her home state were talking about this. I was at the Mccain Service most of the weekend, so i have not been getting as much home state news, but i think the American Public are getting that theres something fundamentally unfair about a last minute 42,000 page document dump, about selecting which 10 of the records youll let the other side see. And certainly anybody thats ever litigated a case knows perfectly well youre supposed to go to trying the next day, on the night before trial begins you get a 42,000 page document dump, first thing you do is go to court and say i need a continuance, and any decent judge in the country would give you that continuance. She indicated she read papers of kavanaugh youre not allowed to release to the public but that you and the committee can se see. From what you have gone through of the record we in the public are not allowed to see but you are, have you seen anything you would argue is disqualifying . Theres no single fatal smoking gun that would cause the republicans to back away from him that i have seen. There are an array of emails and communications that show particularly his integration with leonard leo and Federalist Society and add to a strong narrative that this is the big republican interest behind the Federalist Society, actually seizing the court. You have mcgahn having admit they in sourced the Federalist Society to make the selection. Youve got kavanaugh doing 50 speeches to the Federalist Society. That would be what, i mean, why does that matter so much . Because it means youre not an independent judiciary. It is pretty clear that president s are picking people that philosophically believe in sort of their interpretation of the constitution, so that shouldnt be a surprise, should it not . I think if president obama had brought in the president of the American Civil Liberties union and said im letting you make choices of who i put on the Supreme Court and none of us are going to tell the public whos in the room while you vet the candidates, see what promises are made, the 11 republican heads on the Judiciary Committee would have exploded. And the fact that they are just rolling with these punches i think is a sign that the big interests behind the Federalist Society, behind kavanaugh are also behind all these senators and nobody wants to quarrel with the big funders of their party. It is all line up, salute, drive this guy onto the court. Youre one of the more thorough legal minds i interviewed in the senate. I think thats why youre on judiciary, i know you were state attorney general, you sort of this is your home turf. Help the viewer tomorrow. When various senators ask the question about settled law, what should they be listening for when it comes to if they have if they care about the roe decision . The phrase settled law basically means that there has been a majority decision of the United StatesSupreme Court that still stands. In that sense it is settled law. The magic words that people that care about roe v wade should be looking for is also the acceptance that it was correctly decided. Because if it is kavanaughs view that roe v wade, although settled, was not correctly decided, then he is very likely to be a vote to repeal or undo it. You need to not only have it be settled, but believe it was correctly settled to have any confidence particularly against President Trumps assertion that kavanaugh is put on the court to undo roe v wade. For you thats the code word to listen to tomorrow, how will he answer that question. Correctly worded. Sheldon whitehouse, democrat from rhode island. Probably as deep on legal issues as anyone i deal with in the United States senate. Thanks for coming on. Thanks, chuck. Good to be with you. Could the potential blue wave be getting bigger . Tonight im obsessed with speaking up, shedding light on a Dark Campaign that many journalists, myself included, have never fully acknowledged. I decided to write about it. I am obsessed with the campaign to destroy the legitimacy of the news media. Donald trump didnt start this fire, bus he is spreading it to a potentially more dangerous place. Modern day campaign against the press corp started with nixon. Those foot soldiers included fox news down to roger ailes. He could surround himself with aides that announce it is not facts. Without conditioning of the ground on the right could never have won. Roger ailes was somewhat the godfather of the trump presidency. News journalists make mistakes and have bias issues but theyre different. But when they do, they correct the record. The questions we ask, stories we pursue, theyre all shaped by things simple as geography, where we grew up or where we live. Roger ailes didnt sweat the nuance, he exploited it, and did it for political gain, attacking liberal media, creating mythology of bias press for political means. What did we report as the face of the cable onslaught . Character assassination on almost a nightly basis that led to election of the most fact free president in American History . Nothing. We did nothing. We were trained to say nothing. Reporters know the chips fall where they may, criticism comes with the game. Bring it on. The loudest squealers are usually the ones we exposed. American democracy requires a functioning press that creates a shared set of facts, if journalists are going to defend the integrity of their work, we need to defend our work, fight back against unfair ridiculous charges. We need to do our job, check our facts, try to be transparent, say what we are seeing. I have seen a nearly 50 Year Campaign to delegitimize the media for political means. Im going ahead and saying it. Not advocating for more activist press in the political sense but a more aggressive and straight shooting ones. Needs a greater willingness to speak in plain truth, this is happening, i am telling you, and not allowing ourselves to be so spun, not getting guests or sources a platform to spin untruths if we know it. Welcome back. With labor day come and gone, we are officially in midterm season. We have a whole lot of Campaign News to kickoff the final sprint to election day. Well start nationally. Abc news the Washington Post poll came out with a whopper this morning, claiming democrats have a 14 point advantage in the generic congressional ballot. This was taken after last weeks news with Michael Cohen and paul manafort. And after the passing of john mccain which i have heard throughout, had some polling impact. Quinnipiac has gillam with a lead over desantis. And in missouri, our first check in, we have the race a dead heat between Claire Mccaskill and josh hawley. Governor doug dues ee appointed kyle to fill mccains seat. Then, in chicago democratic mayor range of motion e rahm emanuel said he is not going for a third term. Lets bring in the panel. Steve, i want to start with the generic ballot, 14 points. Ill admit i thought it was a bit of an outlier, had another polster say the mccain funeral didnt help the president s numbers, that they noticed a consistent drop, a little bit overall in the president s numbers across the board. I think also what that underscores Going Forward when we see this through the fall, watch the president s approval rating. That goes hand in hand, same poll that put him at 36 approval. A little low. Thats what i mean. If other polls move to 36 we had 44 and 8 point democratic lead. Republicans think if theyre in the mid 40s, they have a shot of holding on. You go to the mid30s, this is what it looks like, the abc news, the Washington Post poll. So move down the line. Gillam trying to convince National Democrats he can win. Showing in a polarized race, advantage gillam. I think he can win, he mobilized his base. The message is important. Each democrat in their district will tailor their message to what the constituents want to hear, and what those constituents are concerned with. I think the conversation over whats the democratic message is many messages. It is tailored to each district. I also think that were learning how to build off of the 2016, 2017 energy and the resistance and mobilizing those people to actually vote. When you see consistency in the up tick in the democratic turnout, thats a good sign going to midterms. Trump will give us ten more reasons to vote. Missouri senate. Hawley is moving. Dead even among likely voters, among registered voters, haw lee h hawley had a one point lead. And generically, had a narrow edge in missouri which you would expect. In some ways, mccaskill was overperforming because the turnout model assumes a fired up democratic base. Right. But it shows you that it doesnt take much, a President Trump visit may put hawley over the top. I think thats very much in the cards. Im sure that conversation has already taken place at the white house to figure out when the president will get there. I will say this. Dont underestimate Claire Mccaskill. Shes a consummate senator certainly, but more importantly has great political skills. A lot of people say shes already chair, i cant believe two term senator caucus. She may be a three. I was about to say, she was written off two terms ago. I think thats a reality check for a lot of republicans, looking at the numbers. Yes, missouri is republican, should go that way, but jon kyl, deucy has a political struggle. Safe to name a registered lobbyist as the caretaker than try to navigate his own politics. And the fascinating thing is that the guarantee is to early next year. Thats as long as kyl is willing to do this. What happens then . Theres a lot of speculation, Martha Mcsally falls short in november, does he appoint her to hold that seat through 2020. Theres one more scenario i heard. If deucy loses, that was the other one. Raise the other question. Which one of those would prompt bigger backlash. The pers either way youre in uncharted territory. Mcsally is sort of their future in arizona, theyve seen her that way for a long time. Putting her in a tough environment against a strong opponent. What happens if she loses. And i think a lot of republicans are nostalgic for the way it was. That state is changing. Mcsally, yes, is the future. If that future is a little more left of center, i dont know. Deucy and mcsally both to me are the perfect bridge for mccain flake. But the problem is that aint what the base wants. You watch Martha Mcsally, shes trying to desperately trying to channel the energy and rage of the base without having to side with them. Tough call for her. Patriotism thing theyre doing is fascinating. In the past when you were trying to save things, give red meat to the base, it wasnt i support child separations and incarceration of families on the border. We were talking about things not as extreme. Michaels point about changing demographics of arizona, you cant forget that arizona is a state with a border with a lot of issues like the texas border. I recently traveled to the border in arizona and saw some of the detention centers, talked to people that had been through the experience, been through, deported and came back because their baby or husband is here. A state like arizona with changing demographics and issues to the core of peoples families and livelihood, i think politics are going to change as well. We have to go. Rahm emanuel, not a midterm race, backing down from a fight, Michael Steele. Thats a surprise to me. He needs to. I wouldnt run on that record in that city. The number of deaths, the situation in the black community there is appalling. At some point im glad to see he has enough selfrespect to say you know what, i cant do this any more. Michael points out, he didnt have a constituency. Thats what it seemed he was missing. Like he was going to be fine, but nobody was enthused. African americans in one place, i mean, just nobody was for rahm, they were for somebody else. The old mario cuomo thing, you cant paint in poetry, you govern in prose. He is a tech no krat in an age in a city chuck, there are big issues in that city. More importantly to the point about constituency, the black community has had enough. Stick around. Up ahead, Critical Mass for democrats. Get it . Todays primary message in massachusetts could give a clear picture of what the 2020 president ial primaries will look like. Be right back. My apologies, we put up a photo, a big Camilla Harris day, but we had her photo up instead of carrie harris, its easy how the names get messed up. Our apologies there. But thats carrie harris, and thats who tom carper is running against, its fascinating. It will be. I promise you, the big story before the woodward book today, though, Michael Steele, was the president and the alarm that many republicans had, and i have to admit i was surprised there was more alarm when the president essentially criticized Jeff Sessions for putting two house seats in play because his Justice Department indicted Chris Collins in buffalo and Duncan Hunter in san diego. Yeah, because the president s view is theyre on our team and why are you doing that . The members, heres their reality. Theyve got to go defend that and explain it. They dont want to. So yeah, they were a little bit put off by the president s tweet. And now theres some scrambling. Of course, you know, theyve got cover with the back story today with the hearings. Theyve got more cover with the elections tonight, maybe. But thats a reality, chuck, thats going to permeate throughout the remainder of this campaign for these guys. Can i tell you, our friend james hoeman who writes the daily 202 had this, you know, noted, had this lead in, had this anecdote from matt bennett, a former adviser to Vice President gore, talking about this rule of law. He said this, one of the scariest things about Donald Trumps assault on previously trusted institutions is the risk it pose the to peaceful transfer of power. Can anyone imagine trump doing what al gore did in 2000. Its impossible to even summon the image of trump selflessly declaring the recount effort over, congratulate lacing his victorious oh, by the way, not criticizing the Supreme Court for making a political decision. Yeah, well, look, you had the exact scenario, that was a topic in 2016, what would trump do if he lost the election, came to having to make a concession speech. Why wont x stick when it comes to trump, when it comes to his this is a good demonstration, though, because youre right, we started the day talking about something that if any past president had done, if any past president had publicly called out the Justice Department in the way for not playing politics. For explicitly not being a political consideration here, you can imagine it being a story were talking about for months. I could make a case that there would be it would launch a congressional investigation and you could make a case that thats an impeachable offense. If you believe the Justice Department is your score settling department. I would take away the if, the president has told us thats what he believes. Even through tweet or interviews or at least his allies are saying those things. He doesnt have joe walsh on his side, okay. I know. Joe walsh. You remember joe walsh. Interesting critic to follow. He is hes a libertarian. Yes. Libertarians do not like strong power. He wrote this, hes ordered his attorney general to go after his political enemies, pressured his attorney general to lay off political supporters, noiger it is ignores the rule of law. Well, again, it goes to the point that trump views this institution a certain way, republicans have largely given him the caveats he needs to continue to do that. So when he tweets out Something Like he did today, theyre sort of taken aback by having to now go out and say why this is correct or incorrect. Hes joking that he thinks its cool to be president forever. Hes made that joke and we all laugh and we dont take him seriously. What do you mean . I thing in 2032 well ask, how did he win a fourth term. Thats a nightmare. Steve, i have to say, i dont understand why there isnt more of a connection between his view of the rule of law and his ability to nominate a Supreme Court justice. You heard that, that was being raised in those hearings today. To me its a legitimate hearing issue. It becomes one of those questions where what binds republicans to trump, these are the sorts of things that do, theyre getting the Supreme Court nominee they want, thats whats useful of having trump as president. Those very members take that off the table. Ive got to leave it there. A lively first day of school, thank you. Well be right back. Hes got legs of lumber and arms of steel he eats a bowl of hammers at every meal he holds your house in the palm of his hand hes your home and auto man big jim, hes got you covered great big jim, there aint no other so, this is covered, right . This is going to be a crazy 63 days. The beat with ari melber starts right now. Welcome to a special edition of the beat from washington, d. C. , we begin with breaking news tonight. Donald trumps own criminal defense lawyer personally warned the embattled president that he could wooiind up in prison wear an orange jump suit. This is not normal. This is a first. So let me repeat the news that is actually rocking washington right now, even amidst a lot of other news regarding, of course, the Supreme Court confirmation hearings and a new senator named to replace john mccain. But the big news here is Donald Trumps former criminal lawyer john dowd, who publicly split with the president over their strategy warning donald trump that he could end up in prison. And concluding that trump was lying in their own preparations for a potential mueller interview. This obviously raises a ton of
