michele bachmann if you ask me. >> pawlenty is waging a losing rhetorical battle. are she doesn't have a subsequent record. the voters voting for michele bachmann don't care. >> last debate when the topic of health care reform in massachusetts came up pawlenty punted when he had the opportunity to turn it out of the park. >> for mitt or anyone else to say they're not essentially the same plan, it is incredulous. >> but romney kept his attacks squarely on the white house. >> i'm not going to eat barack obama's dog food. who he served up is not what i would have done. >> romney may have faced the toughest debate of the day facing off with a heckler earlier many the day. >> i'm not going to raise taxes. i'm not going to raise taxes. if you want somebody that's going to raise taxes, you can vote for barack obama. >> newt gingrich came up with some of the better applause lines of the night. >> i think the soup committee is about as dumb an idea as washington has come up with. >> this does not make or break a presidential campaign. it's a straw poll, folks. it's a debate in august. >> we have a political reporter in iowa. a good night for the gop. >> we asked that question if it was a good night for the gop this was the first night that you saw the candidates take aim at each other. that's why it's so difficult to beat an incumbent even as one that's as vulnerable as the president in a bad economy. we're going to see them start to hit at each other. they've had kid gloves for each other. now with ames, the first test of this campaign. tim pawlenty, michele bachmann you saw them go at each other. a lot of people think this could be the first chapter to come as they try to pair down the number of candidates. >> who failed to break out of the pack last night? >> well, you know a lot of the lower tier candidates who really want to bring themselves up i think had a hard time. you look at somebody like cain or, you know, jon huntsman, i think that they had a little bit of a difficult time because huntsman really had to try to sell his brnd of moderate republicanism. this is his first debate. you can see why he's going to new hampshire. that's g not going to play very well with the caucus go goers here who tend to be more socially conservative. mitt romney was able to skate with michele bachmann and tim pawlenty take shots at each other. pawlenty has a lot on the line going into saturday. >> why do you think that is? why is pawlenty focussing on bachmann, bachmann focussing on pawlenty. these two minnesotans taking each other on? >> so much for minnesota nice. it seems the be the lead of everyone's stories today. really it's the two of them that feel they have the most to gain or the most to lose out of saturday. think about this, bachmann she has a lot of momentum, now she's a front runner for this -- for the ames straw poll and if she doesn't win, that's going to take her down a peg especially with someone like rick perry who's now going to get into the race. that makes it very, very difficult for someone like bachmann if she can't breakthrough and doesn't win. at the same time tim pawlenty really needs to have a strong second place showing. he's really fighting for a lot of the oxygen when you have a perry and bachmann it's going to come down to who can win between those people to become the anti-romney to face off against him and take him down. there's a lot to come. that's what's on the line for those two saturday. >> a busy weekend ahead for you. we'll be keeping an eye on iowa. thank you for joining us today. texas governor rick perry is making it official tomorrow in south carolina he'll announce he's officially in the 2012 race. in an exclusive interview for "time", he said he hadn't concerned running until a few weeks ago. >> i went from no, got the best job in america to today being fully engaged in this process of making a decision. the issue of is this what i want to do was dealt with about 45 days ago in a conversation with my wife. >> nbc news reporter is on skype in south carolina. >> reporter: we're going to see rick perry making his big announcement. finally making it official here in charleston, south carolina. it's a big primary state that isn't iowa. many of his competitors were in iowa last night and are going to be there for the ames straw poll on saturday tomorrow. by being here in south carolina another key primary state where he's hoping to do very well, he's drawing away some attention without looking like he's trying to margin alzheimer's alize tho. it's a state he hopes to do well. there's a big evangelical christian population here and a lot of sympathy for the key party. those are two key constituencies he's trying to court. >> he hasn't participated in the first two republican debates. he's not on the ballot in this straw poll this weekend although others have started a write in campaign for him. does the campaign think that they have some catching up to do? >> they are getting into this race late. we saw over the past few weeks rick perry meeting with a lot of potential donors. there was a money question here. because he's coming in so late they wanted to meet with a lot of potential donors and see what support would look like. that's what he's been doing over the last few weeks. as he said in that interview, i think his decision was made in his head 45 days ago or whatever he said, but he wanted to make sure that the support is there in key primary states. he's been working the phones. his staff has been working the phones to make sure when he gets to iowa and south carolina and new hampshire that there's people on the ground who are willing to put their work towards him and put their dollars towards him. >> carey, thank you. let's bring in our political strategist here karen finny. and our republican strategist. good to se you both today. >> great to see you. >> ron, let me begin with you. is there anybody on the gop side who should be looking at the polling, looking at the debate performance and just throw many the towel right now? >> right now, last night's debate was really like an nfl preseason game. you're looking for people who are going to rise ahead of the pack and for those who are probably going to fall off. i would have to say you did have some minor candidates who will probably end up dropping off after a little while here. you have rick santorum. you have herman cane. i don't know if ron paul will step away yet. he's feisty. >> karen, what's your thought on that? >> you know, that's about right. a lot of what the this is about at this point is who's got the money and the sort of infrastructure to hang on? you saw newt gingrich sort of make a point about that during the campaign. i think he will probably keep going during the debate last night based on his ego. you might see someone like cain. i certainly don't think ron paul will back off. he and rick santorum clearly have each other in their sights. i think you'll probably see most of the top folks continue on from here. the question will be whether or not they can make the argument to donors that they're still viable candidates particularly given that now we have a wild card not only of rick perry but sarah palin popping her head back up. >> sarah palin she doesn't have the campaign apparatus assembled and ready to go in the way rick perry does. she cast a long shadow. ron what do you anticipate perry in this role of shaker upper will do once he enters the race? >> once he enters the race, i think you're going to see the preliminary season over. you're going to see -- i think the field has been pretty much set unless palin jumps in. right now it doesn't look like she's going to. i think with rick perry we have to see what he does. how he delivers his speeches. how impactful he is and how much money he raises. right now mitt romney is doing very well in the fundraising side and rick perry has to do the same thing as well. >> romney is not wasting time attacking other gop opponents. he's focused on president obama. it seems like he's already skipped the primary nominations and is going right into the general election. the president was focused on him, too, politico reported this week that obama's campaign wanted to paint romney as weird among other things. david axelrod shot down that story on "today." >> and anyone who purports to be a source within the obama camp who used that term and some of the other terms that are in that story according to unnamed sources should be ripped out of the role decks. >> are you saying that story is false? >> yes. >> we're hearing it. we're seeing it. now my turn to talk. regardless of whether the story is false and axelrod calls it garbage, is mitt romney the primary concern for the president's campaign? >> well, he certainly -- i actually will tell you that i heard from some folks within the campaign that someone had talked to ben smith and it got blown out of proportion. i think we've seen some activity in terms of them trying to frame mitt romney again as a flip-flopper. again sort of also since he's trying to run as a business person making a point of his record. clearly he's someone that they are focused on. >> romney has a target on his back with all these gop opponents. it will be interesting to see how rick perry's entry shakes up this race. and also whether schara palin even an endorsement from her can make a difference in the way this thing runs. karen, ron, thank you both for participating. i appreciate it. >> thank you. we're getting some live video in, oh iowa state fair. her bus tour is kicking off again. and the state fair is sort of the mandatory stop by for these candidates. we've seen a lot of attention paid to all the fried food on a stick at the state fair this is live video from sarah palin who again says she will later on she said the summer later this fall she's going to say whether she's going to run for president. so far has not really assembled the kind of campaign team that even rick perry did many the lead up to what's supposed to be his official announcement tomorrow. here's the woman who knows how to grab the headlines and to drive the story line for cable news the next day. all right. big question today, will the straw poll be a make or break opportunity for any of the gop candidates? you heard michael steele say on "morning joe", come on it's the summertime, we're in summer vacation mode. what do you think? close eye here on wall street today as we close out one of the most volatile weeks in the history of the stock market. let's get a check. right now dow jones up 169 points. it looks like the s&p has climbed 12 point tons day. the nasdaq is up 28. joining me live "the washington post" financial reporter neil irwin. is everybody looking for the weekend, need a break, a time to breathe and don't panic. >> absolutely. after this last couple weeks everyone involved in financial markets could use a vacation. this has been an up and down cycle. we've been moving 5% a day every day for about two weeks. so just a sense that things are a little bit normal is a real sense of relief even the part that it's a market gain day. >> we've seen four straight days of 400 point plus surges or plunges with the dow. incredible volatility. at this point does it say anything about the volatility of our economy, the stability of our economy? >> it does. there are two big questions hanging over the financial markets right now. one is europe whether europe can contain its debt crisis and not fall into a really dark crisis situation. the other is the u.s. economy. we've seen a lot of mixed data the last few weeks are we headed to a double dip. are we headed to a recession in the last couple pieces of data have pointed to maybe we're not in another recession. maybe the economy's growing slowly, it is growing. maybe the wheels aren't coming off the u.s. economy just yet. >> retail sales climbed .5% last month and consumers were spending more on cars, furniture and gasoline. that pushed up sales by the largest amount in four months. certainly the kind of sign investors want to see here. neil, good to see you. i hope you have a relaxing weekend. >> you, too. new clues surface in the search for a missing 3-year-old girl in missouri. and depraved or deprived? [ man ] so i used mine to get a whole new perspective. ♪ [ male announcer ] the new citi thankyou premier card gives you more ways to earn points. what's your story? citi can help you write it. police have uncovered what may be a new clue in the search for a missing 3-year-old girl in missouri. they found training wheels in an area nearby her home. tell me where the investigation stands on finding this child? >> reporter: that's right. authorities say they're getting closer to finding out what happened to the girl. the fbi is trying to get dna from those training wheels to see if they belong to her bike. i spoke to the parents and they say that those training wheels are part of the bike they bought her last july. as you can imagine this is heart wrenching news for these parents because tomorrow it will be one week since she was last seen. >> and at that point, i know that they sent those wheels to a crime lab. what kind of evidence are investigators hoping they can glean from them? >> reporter: they are not saying very much. they're just analyzing to see if they find any dna. the parents are sure that those training wheels belong to her daughter's bicycle. the thors are not saying very much. >> thank you. they are looking again for a white van that was spotted in the area. >> reporter: that's right. within the hour a cleveland serial killer was sentenced to death for killing 11 women. prosecutors say 5 -year-old anthony sowell lured the women to his home with the promise of alcohol or drugs and then murdered them and buried the bodies around his property. again, he has received now the death sentence for those killings. a tragic story from california. a pregnant woman mauled to death by her pet pit bull. her husband found her in their home yesterday with one of the two pit bulls standing over her body. the 32-year-old woman's face, and neck were covered in bite arms. she was pronounced dead at the scene. police shot and killed the dog that attacked her. a happy reunion for one family in mississippi. darrella harr low was throwing the first pitch at a minor league baseball game. little did she know the catcher was her husband who was serving in afghanistan. zblipted to make sure she remembered what i looked like. >> i didn't through the mask. >> it was the first time darrella and her daughters had seen them in nine months. looks like a happy reunion. beauty and the billionaire. one of the richest men in the world is being taken to court by an exgirlfriend. a much younger exgirlfriend. plus the story of a confused cow and how it wound up 15 feet below ground. [ woman announcing ] new beneful healthy fiesta. another healthful, flavorful beneful. welcome back to msnbc. i'm contessa brewer. the u.s. postal service say it's considering cutting 20% of its workforce. 120,000 jobs to an effort to avoid bankruptcy. the agency wants to move retired workers out of federal health and retirement programs and set up its own benefit systems. some much needed rain came to north texas. with the good came the bad. several neighborhoods were flooded. startling numbers about high school dropouts in california. a new report shows almost one in five students in the state eats projected class of 2010 dropped out before graduation day. a new study shows smoking increases the risks more of a heart attack in women more than men. it showed a 25% difference in increased risks. researchers aren't sure why that is. stocks are higher today following a strong retail sales report this morning. the dow jones is up 145 points. the s&p is up by 11. the nasdaq has popped up 22. let's go to melissa francis who is joining me live. when we're looking at these reports, it looks like a glimmer of good news help re-assure investors. maybe now's the time to jump back in. >> it has been a tough week. the market has moved more than 400 points four days in a row. that's the first time it's happened in the dow's history. eight days we reversed direction. that's also unusual. today we had a consumer sentiment number that wasn't great. the market rallied in spite of telling you people are feeling a lot better today. another sign europe closed higher. we rallied after that close. that has been a breaking point. there's some sense that things are getting a little bit back to normal. if we close up another 100 or so points we'll be right back at the place we were last friday which would be amazing most investors vomited this week. >> i'm thinking about all the insomn insomnia. there was lots of za nax. what do traders do to try to re-evaluate, take stock and look ahead? >> i don't know, drink? it's been a really tough week for investors. we keep asking people what do you expect for next week, they're just holding their head and saying more of the same, probably. they're bracing for volatility. the real thing i spent time with jamie diamond this week the ceo of j.p. morgan. he said we have problems. there's all fixable. there's no calamity out there right now. as you watch the markets swing back and forth i think it's about investors who have lost confidence and looking for that direction as opposed to you know, a really big crisis like we saw back in 2008. we'll hope is better after the weekend and can sort of calm down. >> your interview with jamie diamond by the way, got played over and over and over again. almost to the point people are thinking why isn't this guy running for president? >> a lot of people are asking that. when i asked him that, he said i'd be a terrible politician. he's very frank. he says whatever he's thinking. he's not manageable by his handlers at all. hay don't have any control over him. >> so is the vice president and he's been a politician for a long type. >> there you go. >> good to see you. >> you, too. have a great weekend. casey anthony could learn today if she has to probation on a check fraud decision. judge perry could make his decision today. he hasn't yet ruled on last friday's hearing. judge perry has been busy covering other cases. ; a new report by florida's child welfare agency says anthony failed to protect her 2-year-old daughter caylee and contributed to her death. the report found that anthony did not report the child missing in a timely manner. the fbi is now helping authorities in a aruba investigate the disappearance of a maryland woman. the fbi says it's conducting interviews and giving other assistance in the search for 35-year-old robin gardener. her 50-year-old travel companion told police garden her disappeared while the two were snorkling off the tip of the island. awe rubian authorities arrested that man because of growing doubts above and beyonding his story. new york's former top cop says he may go in to show the british how to crack down on thugs, and hooligans. william bratten says he's in talks on becoming an advisor on calming the violence and changing the police force requested prnlly by the prime minister. jay gray is live in london. they do things very different in london than they do in new york city. but at this point the prime minister i think it's time to reconsider all options. rop absolutely. i talked briefly with bill bratten this morning. he has been watching the events unfold here in london. may be a bit keener after prime minister david cameron sukted he could turn to the former police chief for help with the violence here. moving into the weekend, there is still clearly concern across london right now. five people were killed during the riots. the latest victim a 68-year-old man who was attacked as he was trying to put out a fire started by looters. today police say they will keep 16,000 officers on the street instead of the usual 2500. it appears the courts willry main open and working through the night again this evening to handle the volume of suspects in the system right now. more than 1500 people have been arrested. close to 900 charged. those numbers will likely grow as investigators use surveillance video to identify suspects. judges continue to hand down strict penalties hoping to send a message. in one of the cases an electrical engineering student was enginesed to six months in jail for stealing a case of bottled water. prime minister cameron has prompted to continue the stepped up controls and harsh prosecution for as long as necessary. and has considered banning the use of social media by suspects after at least three people were arrested and charged with using social networking sites to ensite the riots. >> you've got to expect that move is not going to be popular with young people regardless if they were involved with trouble making or not. thank you. let's go back now to iowa. we're watching rick sar tomorrow on his soap box. the candidates can come by and have informal speeches. polite crowd, but this is where yesterday that heckler got up in mitt romney's face and was creaming back and forth and romney held his own yesterday. typically what you see is people show up and they listen politely. today a lot of iowans said they were embarrassed by that sort of gaffe in decorum that they saw in des moines yesterday at the iowa state fair. by the way, michele bachmann has yet to crack the top spot in polling ahead of the gop presidential primary. but the minnesota congresswoman is fighting for it. in the republican debate she set her sights squarely on her fellow minnesotan tim pawlenty. >> you said the era of small government was over. that sounds a lot more like barack obama if you ask me. >> jamie, why does she consider pawlenty the opponent worth fighting against so hard? >> reporter: hi, how are you? clearly they're both from minnesota, paw lentier's the former governor and balkman is a come from minnesota. it's hard to tell exactly why this occurred. one thing is clear that is campaign was ready for it. this was really something remarkable in the enormous media filing center at the event last night with laptops clicking away and newspaper writers filing pieces, the bachmann campaign was in the room handing out literature on pawlenty's record during the course of the debate. >> she was also asked about the bible telling wives to be submissive and asked if she would submit to her husband if she wins the presidency. she said to her submission means respect. here's what she told lester holt. >> i was happy to i was able to talk about my wonderful husband. i think it's important to talk about respect. we've been married for 33 years and the basis of our marriage is respect. >> being submissive is not really about being respectful. maybe that's the way she interprets it. when she's going out and campaigning with women and especially independent minded women, i don't mean that in just a political sense, is the campaign worried at all that this question of being a submissive wife might turn them off?
