Over it in the two hours ahead. President trump giving his first interview since he lost the election, and it is everything that you would expect. Full of lies, lashing out and loads of conspiracy theories. So back to the real world. Joe biden moves closer to takingover the reins of power. His first daily brief tomorrow since winning the election and his picks for his cabinet in the days ahead. Plus as schools struggle on the decision of Remote Learning every day, a new report from one School District highlighting the impact this may be having on students. I want to talk to former education secretary arnie duncan about that, ahead. We also have a collection of reporters covering news today. Lets start with carol lee who is at the white house for us. Carol, good to do see you this afternoon. Thanks for joining us on this. Wow, you get the distinct pleasure of talking about the president s first interview since this election with maria bartiromo. There were a lot of falsehoods, there were a lot of lies. It was pretty hard for us, actually, to find any truth in that interview. Talk us through a little bit of what folks may have missed. Reporter it was a lot. He spoke for 45 minutes, largely, and it was the president venting frustrations about the lack of a path for his legal efforts. He sounded very frustrated. He was lashing out at everyone from the governor of georgia, who is an ally of his, who he says now he is ashamed to have ever endorsed. He sounded out against judges who ruled against cases his team has brought, including in pennsylvania, and he generally just put forward allegations of fraud and corruption, none of which have been backed up by any evidence, and some of which have already been debunked. Lets take a listen to some of what he said. You start with these machines that have been suspect, not allowed to be used in texas. We have glitches where they moved thousands of votes from my account to bidens account. These arent glitches, theyre theft, theyre fraud. And this is a wellcoordinated attack because you dont do it with everybody. Maybe it would happen in philadelphia but it wouldnt happen in detroit. Detroit and philadelphia, milwaukee, these are among the most dishonest, political places in use. Just look at the past history. Im not being rude to anybody. These are highly corrupt locations politically. I want to file one suit, donald j. Trump, president of the United States against and i put everything in one simple suit and they say, sir, you dont have standing. I say, i dont have standing . You mean to say as president of the United States, i dont have standing . What kind of a court system is this . Reporter i just want to address the dominion accusation hes made there. The president s allies have made an accusation about voting in georgia and michigan. They said its not true, that thi things the president says are just false. Well be Digging Deeper into this interview, as deep as we can go, and fact check what you just did there, carol, pretty brilliantly. For now, carol lee, thank you. The Trump Campaign paid for a recount in two wisconsin counties, and that has ended. For 3 million they picked up 87 votes for joe biden, actually. Dade county finished its calculation doing little to change the number in the state for the president elect. And a big week in the Biden Administration with ali vitale live for us. Ali, thank you for being with us. We also heard from the Transition Team who is saying buckle up, were going to get a lot more announcements, a lot more appointments in the coming weeks. What are we expecting . Reporter that was the warning we got was bundle up for december, because we know we got that first slew of picks, Foreign Policy and National Security, but now were looking for picks related to the economy. We know our sources have told us that janet yellen is likely the next pick to lead the treasury department, but a lot of other speculation happening for other parts of the cabinet and a lot of jockeying behind the scenes as allies and other parts of this Democratic Party try to push whoever they think is best suited for these roles and in an administration that is going to prioritize the Pandemic Response over everything else, the role of secretary is key. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus saying they would like to see michelle lewan grisham in that role. Dr. Vivek who is on the Covid Task Force right now, raul ruiz of california, and representative karen bass of california. We heard that name a lot over the summers. She was considered as one of bidens running mates, now being considered for health and Human Services secretary. Then you look to the department of defense. Were seeing a lot of names floated here, but one that keeps coming to the top of the list is top official michelle flournoy. Also former Homeland Security secretary jeh johnson as well as tammy duckworth, one of the women in contention over the veeps pick period, and if a woman was chosen for the pentagon, she would be the first woman in that role. We look at a slate of cabinet members who look a little bit like what some are likening to a third term of the obama administration. Its not a comparison this biden team has loved, and i want to show you William Mcraven pushing back on that idea this morning. Ive heard that refrain a lot since the nominees were announced, and i dont agree with that. The fact of the matter is these are different times. The challenges out there may be the same in terms of a rising china and an aggressive russia, but this new group of National Security professionals coming in are incredibly experienced, incredibly talented. They are going to approach these issues differently than certainly the Trump Administration did, and i would offer, to some degree, differently than the obama administration. Reporter and, yasmin, the way he lays it out there are really interesting, because youre seeing a group of people whose experience comes from the obama years, but the stakes have never been as high as now by a recession thats spurred on by this ongoing pandemic. Stakes incredibly high right now. Ali vitale, good seeing you. Joe scarborough is going to tell me about his new book and what the Incoming Administration can learn from history. Its going to be a good one. I want to turn to the coronavirus nationwide. The u. S. Reporting 266 thor,000d in the last hour. Also to colorado where Governor Polis has tested positive for the coronavirus. He has been in quarantine since wednesday and will remain there for the appropriate time. And the denver mayor was given backlash after traveling for thanksgiving and he said he made the decision with his heart and not his head. Millions making their return home today. Nbcs Cori Coughlin is live for us in the suburb of lake forest. Cori, good to see you this afternoon. Thank you for joining us on this. It is the sunday after thanksgiving. We know that car travel accounts for more than 90 of holiday transportation specifically this year. How busy are you seeing the roads so far . Reporter yeah, yasmin, good afternoon. Theyre surprisingly light today, and that is reflective of the fact that there were some changes in travel plans for people, which ill get into in just a moment, but aaa did expect, as you mentioned, that there wasnt going to be a major dip in travel. We had 4. 3 less car travel than last year, not much for a pandemic year. People i spoke to at this rest stop said they didnt want to change their plans, and then other folks i spoke to said they did want to change the way they traveled, so it could be this sunday the packed roads are more spread out now. Listen to what one woman had to tell me about her travel plans this year. Tell me, what were your Holiday Travel plans . I went to see my inlaws in wisconsin. We were supposed to go earlier this year, but we waited until thanksgiving. There were only a few of us there, just immediate family. There was nobody at risk, but we still covered our face, because his parents are a little older, so we took precautions. Reporter all right, yasmin, so folks still wanting to drive, maybe making some alterations. It wasnt the same for airlines, though, Airline Travel down by 47 , but still, tsa reporting some 6. 8 Million People came over the weekend packing those airports, and only about half responded by saying they were planning to isolate when they returned home, very concerning for these hot spot states. Cori coughlin, good to see you. The emergency Field Hospital in the outer burrough of Staten Island. This is disconcerting, to say the least. I was at one in rhode island a couple weeks ago and now one opening in our hometown. What do you say so far . Reporter yasmin, this is concerning. Maybe i glimmer that maybe things arent as bad as they were in the spring, but we did see a steady stream of cars one by one pull in. So they pull in here and then they would drive through these tents and get tested. It was free, you didnt have to have an appointment, but then behind these tents, you see that brick and mortar building, that is a Psychiatric Hospital that was built and it never opened. So back in the spring it was used as this Field Hospital. They treated about 250 patients for covid. Theyve reopened this week. They now have 14 covid patients, and theyre expecting that number to double by tomorrow. So thats a troubling number right there. The people in the Field Hospital, these are nonserious cases. The really urgent covid cases go to the main hospital, and also they have another facility about nine miles south where they can do routine procedures and still keep up with things like cancer treatments. But, yasmin, things in Staten Island are very worrisome. The cases are higher than they were in the aftermath of july 4th and labor day, and right now local leadership is blaming it on peoples behavior. Theyre not masking up, theyre not socially distancing, and one doctor i spoke to, the medical director at this hospital, says if youre not going to do it for yourself, do it for the Health Care Workers. Lets listen. Theyre tired but theyre not exhausted. Theyre tired, and you know what, theyre amazingly resilient. This is like entering the second war within a year. Reporter so, i mean, that is just incredible there, yasmin. Like i said, they have 14 patients. They can accommodate about 100. They can set up to accommodate more, but yasmin, they dont want to do that. Same story, different state. As schools weigh the risk of inperson learning amid rising covid cases, illinois mayor bill de blasio says inperson school will reopen starting december 7th. Middle schools and high schools, though, will remain closed. Meanwhile a report on students grades in one of the largest School Districts shows Remote Learning has led to an alarming drop in grades. Fairfax county Public Schools in virginia which has been mostly online since march reporting a middle school earning fs and that failing grades are up for 50 of high school students. Thank you for joining us. I hope you and your family are doing well. How are you doing . Were so fortunate. Many families arent as lucky and were very appreciative every day that were getting stronger and healthier. Lets talk about some of the latest news when it comes to education across this country, and i first want you to react to the latest news out of new york city where mayor bill de blasio is essentially saying, schools are back, theyre back to inperson learning just for grade school children, elementary children, not necessarily for middle school and high school so far. Theres been a lot of back and forth when it comes to opening and closing illinois Public Schools. What do you make of this latest decision . Its obviously not a unique challenge in new york. Other districts across the country are dealing with this. It takes a huge toll on students, on their parents and on teachers. So many districts like new york are in this cycle, unfortunately, of trying to open, closing back down again, trying to open again, and unfortunately, i hate to say it, new york may well be in a position in the nottoodistant future when theyre closing down again. We as a nation have failed to put children first. We had open bars and restaurants for months and didnt keep them closed, and kids with their education paid a huge price. Its a historically difficult challenging time which no one is winning. I just had a conversation with randy wine weingarten and we talked about the possibility of kids falling behind, that they wouldnt learn in the capacity they did when they would go to school every day. Now were seeing the results of this with staggering numbers of failing grades across the board, especially in middle school. But guess who is affected more than anything else . It is black students, hispanic students, students with disabilities as economically disadvantaged students. I think folks anticipated this happening. What is to be done as kids continue to fall behind throughout the school year when we have no time in sight when they will go back to inschool learning . It is tough. Think about the muethnic crises public crisis of systemic racism, and of course the most marginalized, the most disadvantaged communities are always going to be hit the hardest, which is exactly what were seeing with our black students, our latino students, students with disabilities. Unfortunately, they always fare the brunt of any challenges, and this is a difficult time. Not only are our children falling behind, we have possibly 2 to 3 Million Students who literally havent been back to school since march, have not been back to school since march. So this is really for me a moment of reckoning. We have to not wait until january with a new administration, although we absolutely welcome that. We have to go find those children, we have to think about a National Tutoring program for those children who are falling the furthest behind, be that physically, be that virtually, be that a hybrid. We cannot lose a generation of children. It is not the childrens fault theyre put in a bad situation, it is absolutely not their fault. We have to rethink everything now, we have to do it with a renewed sense of urgency, and frankly we need to act. As you demonstrate, that is so far from the case. Its not just academically that children are struggling, their social and emotional needs, its a very difficult time. Many live in a time of stress and fear that was unimaginable eight months ago. And the bird cant continue to fall on these marginalized kids, as you said quite well. It continues to every single time. Former educator arne duncan, thank you for your words on this, and i hope you and your family continue to get better from covid. The president makes a stunning claim of what he might do best to prove his baseless claims of voter fraud. And a nursing home strikes in california. Well be right back. Ikes in california. No action from iran so far this weekend after its leaders vowed retaliation for the assassination of mohse mohsen fakhrizadeh. There is fear that the act could provoke confrontation among the foes in the last week of Donald Trumps presidency. The president made a lot of claims about the election, and when asked, even said he was open to the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate his loss. They should have nev this never should have been allowed to happen. Its an embarrassment to our country. All over the world, theyre talking about it. Yes, i would consider a special prosecutor. This is not a counsel, it sounds so nice. I went through three years of a special counsel prosecutor. I call it a prosecutor because its a much more accurate term. Joining me now, former federal prosecutor and msnbc legal analyst. Glen, good to see you. There were a lot of claims made in that 45minute interview, some of which i spoke about with carol lee earlier in the show, but i think one of the bigger ones is the president saying he wanted to appoint a special prosecutor. Who knows if he would do that in the 50some days he has left as leader of this country, but does he even have the right to do so . No, he doesnt. The department of justice could go down the road of considering a special counsel counsel, we had one in bob mueller. But heres the thing, yasmin, the president has really enjoyed the benefit of his own private special counsel for the last couple of years, and his name is bill barr. And if bill barr, with all of his nefarious attempts to weigh in in favor of donald trump on the election didnt work, then nothing is going to work. In fact, nothing is going to work. You saw the opinion that came out of the Third Federal Circuit Court of appeals where a trumpappointed judge by the name of judge bebis is the one who authored the opinion, and i can read two lines from it. It really tells you everything you need to know about Donald Trumps legal claim. One line is that calling an election unfair does not make it so, and then if you flip to page 21 of the opinion, judge bebis concludes with rudy giuliani, the president s lawyer, is trying to use alchemy to spin lead into gold, and this is president trumps appointed judge. Toii want to touch on a few things you mentioned. You talked about bill barr being his prosecutor. He actually said bill barr was missing in action, which i think had a lot of people scratching their heads in that interview. He also claimed, basically, that the judges didnt allow for some evidence to be submitted, which is blatantly false. Lets play some of that sound and then i want you to react. Well, were trying to put the evidence in and the judges wont allow us to do it. We are trying we have so much evidence. You probably saw it wednesday of last week. We had a hearing in gettysburg, pennsylvania. It was an incredible hearing, unbelievable witnesses, highly respected people that were truly aggrieved. So there is no evidence. And thats what you were just talking about. I want to read from three separate judges, one of which was bebis you just read from, the blood of our democracy, it requires proof. We have neither here. Then a judge from atlanta said mr. Trump denied holding the election from his vote of which he said i have no basis or law. And then another president saying, it was a halfstitchedtogether case. He also noted it was strained with arguments and unsuspected accusations with which there was no evidence. Not that they blocked any evidence, they just have no evidence. Yasmin, you just covered the landscape right there. I think donald trump in that sound bite we just heard actually proved judge bebis point, that just saying its a fraud case, just saying you have evidence doesnt make it so. And i would add, saying that you had a hearing and you presented evidence when what you really did was, you know, set up a microphone and a camera in a Conference Room next to the breakfast buffet of a holiday inn with apologies to holiday inn, i dont know if that was the actual hotel in which donald trump held its hearing. This wasnt a hearing, it was a pr stunt. So just as judge bebis said, just saying these things do not make them so. Glen kershaw, my friend, thank you as always. Good to see you this afternoon. Coming up in the 4 00 p. M. Hour, im going to talk to john podesta about the president s failing legal fight and the challenges ahead for joe biden. Strikes over work conditions in illinois, theyre having an impact in some of the most vulnerable amidst this pandemic. Nursing home residents. Valerie castro is on the south side of chicago with more on that. Valerie, good to see you this afternoon. This is once again shocking to see. Its something new york state suffered through in the early days of this pandemic, so what are we seeing in the chicago area. Good afternoon, yasmin. We are here outside one of the nursing homes. They just held a rally behind me. They were joined by the Teachers Union for a show of solidarity for the issues theyre going through. The workers at these facilities say they dont have adequate ppe and they dont have adequate basic pay. Those are demands they want met. Their contract expired in late may and they have not been successful in negotiating for Infinity Health care. These work ers say theyre read to negotiate. They know exactly what they want and need. Over 4,000 cases of covid have been reported in these longterm care facilities and 6,000 deaths has had about 12,000 deaths, so these facilities count for about half of that number. The workers say they dont have adequate ppe. One worker told us they had been wearing these masks for up to a week. Another concern is when they go home to their family members, the risks of taking covid. Your residents are in a state theyve never been in before. Ive had residents call me, begging me, crying, asking us to come back in the building because theyre not being properly taken care of. This is unacceptable. This is totally unacceptable. My heart bleeds for them. I also have a family at home. I have a husband who has copd and emphysema. I really dont want to have to take the covid home to him, so we definitely need to properly ppe. And the workers say they do not have adequate ppe. They went on strike last sunday so tomorrow will be one full week. We have reached out for comment but they have not responded. Yasmin . Thank you, valerie, i appreciate you bringing that to us. Lets listen to dr. Fauci. Watch this. What we expect, unfortunately, as we go for the next couple of weeks into december, that we might see a surge superimposed upon that surge that were already in. I want to bring in nbc medical contributor dr. Natalie azar. Dr. Azar, thank you for joining us on this. So nice to talk to you on things like that since you always make it so clear for many of our viewers. Its pretty troubling, right, hearing the story we just heard from valerie, that a lot of folks who are working at these nursing home clinics with people who are the most vulnerable, that we saw the most deaths for, especially in the east coast area in early spring when we had the early surges, dont have ppe to protect themselves. Thats startling to see, especially so late in the pandemic. Then we hear numbers from approximately 100,000 deaths per day. We increase by a million cases every week, and it seems like thats not slowing down. Reporte no, definitely not, yasmin, and i think right now were at about 4 million cases out of the total 13 million cases that happened in the month of no novemb november alone. Granted, we were not doing near the amount of testing were doing now, but these numbers are concerning and always important to add that they do correlate with hospitalizations and deaths. Your point about the ppe for our Health Care Workers and nursing homes, its just absolutely shameful that any Health Care Worker r at this juncture is ill prepared. What do you make of the most recent decision of mayor bill de blasio in new york city basically saying new York City Kids can go back to school . I imagine some of the decision is based on children of that age group who are not seeming like a vector or superspreader of covid as they once were back in the spring. I think it was given as a dividing age, ten or older, ten or younger. First of all, they can still stred spread to others, so we shouldnt be lulled in and children younger than that, the preschool age, a study showed there wasnt a greater risk for Health Care Providers of young children, that its probably reasonably safe to say that those children probably are not at risk of the teachers teaching them. The teenagers are at risk of spreading the disease, so we need to be more careful. But the data is not near as bad as we thought they would be. Dr. Natalie azar, thank you as always. We have Small Businesses across the state of california. We are live there. And what can president elect biden bring to a struggling economy . Well talk about that after the break. Economy . Well talk about that after the break. Only pay for what you need. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. Liberty. We started by making the cloud easier to manage. But we didnt stop there. We made a cloud flexible enough to adapt to any size business. No matter what it does, or how it changes. And we kept going. So you only pay for what you use. Because at dell technologies, we stop. At nothing. Because at dell technologies, we stop. At nothing. For bathroom odors that linger try febreze small spaces. Just press firmly and it continuously eliminates odors in the air and on soft surfaces. For 45 days. Welcome back. New covid restrictions coming to california. San Santa Clara County announcing some of the restrictive new rules. Scott cohn is there for us. Scott, good to see you. What are these new restrictions going to look like and how are people preparing for whats coming . Reporter its not as severe as the initial restrictions we saw back in march here in Santa Clara County which is one of the first places in the country to be dealing with covid19, but there are definitely going to be restrictions nonetheless as we look at case levels that are the worst since the pandemic began. 760 new cases yesterday alone. So what they are saying is they want people to quarantine if they traveled, for example, out of the county during the thanksgiving holiday or any time in the next month. There is a 14day quarantine expected, leisure and nonessential travel is skur discouraged. The owner of the ibiss boutique in san jose has been in business for 13 years and has dealt with every single punch thats been thrown at her throughout this. She moved to an Online Shopping model for about half her business where she hadnt done before, she had to change her inventory. But it seems like everything, she says, is uncharted territory. Theres a bit of relief that this Holiday Weekend did go well. Im hopeful that the rest of the season goes well, but, nonetheless, every decision i make is met with a bit of trepidation. Im not able to just relax and, you know, make Business Decisions the way i used to before. Everything now is just, what if its the wrong thing that i did . Reporter as you heard her allude to the beginning of this Holiday Shopping season, black friday and yesterday came in where she actually expected for the year. But the rest of the year is in question. Lincoln avenue and the willow glen section of san jose and everywhere else, how long can they sustain this, especially as we go through the surge in cases. Yasmin . That is the question across the nation, not just in california, especially for folks living on unemployment right now. Scott cohn, thank you. Layoffs across this company are rising again. We have new data from the labor department. Im showing the number of americans seeking unemployment aid has increased this week to 778,000, and filings are up 30,000 when they hit their lowest level since this pandemic began. New data shows u. S. Confidence dipping to a new low as more businesses are force to do close their doors. And a warning sign for our countrys economic recovery. Joining me now is Washington Post economic correspondent heather long. Heather, good to have you on this. This is an incredibly important topic, as we can all imagine, because everyone is living through it at this moment, seeing folks unemployed, Food Insecurity happening across the country, Small Businesses closing in all of our neighborhoods and cities. I want to talk about the road ahead, especially for biden, when it comes to economic recovery, right, but i think we cant address that without talking about the next 50 days or so ahead and the relief that washington could actually offer before biden becomes the next president. What is the likelihood that americans could even see relief before january 20th . I wish i could say it was a high likelihood. Its clear the economy needs it. You just showed some of those harrowing statistics. All the signs are that the economy is in a scary place right now, and its deteriorating. We were only about halfway recovered, and now it looks like were going to backslide in the next 50 days. Economists across the political spectrum are urging more money, particularly for Small Businesses and the unemployed. And it looks like thats just not happening. We still have democrats, House Speaker pelosi talking about a 2 trillion or more bill, and Republican Senate leader Mitch Mcconnell talking about how he only wants to spend less than a trillion. Thats a big gap to bridge right now. You sit here and think, why dont they just sign a 1. 5 trillion bill and be done with it, but right now theyre not close to that. Okay, so lets talk postjanuary 20th, right . Can joe biden actually get a relief bill done, and can he get it done really quickly . We dont know who is going to control the senate. We know that will be a major question in all of this, whether its the republicans or the democrats. Considering who joe biden is, and he will be the president at that point, does he have the ability, you believe, at that point to get a relief bill done fairly quickly because we know it is his a1 priority. It is his top priority to get the coronavirus under control and the economy steady again. This friday, keep an eye on the jobs number for november. There are growing predictions that number could be negative in november and again in december. If we start to see job losses again in november and december, that pressure is really going to rise on congress, and its particularly republicans, because its happening in a lot of these red states like north dakota where the covid crisis is rising. So i think the pressure will increase to do something this winter. The other thing that gives me encouragement is if you listen closely to some of bidens top economic advisers, like his longtime adviser jared bernstein, theyve started to change their tune a little bit. It used to be they were lockstep with pelosi saying we need a big, big bill. They would still prefer that but you hear them saying something is better than nothing. If the republicans are willing to give you a few million, take it. Lets quickly talk about bidens recovery bill when it comes to the pandemic and beyond. Biden wants to check corporate labor abuse, holding executives accountable for labor law violations. He wants to offer up to 10,000 student loan forgiveness per borrower for up to five years, and Financial Assistance for housing through a refundable and as advanceable tax credit. What are the chances he could do this in his first 100 days in congress . It depends on congress. He can do some of these through executive order. They are making a big stack of executive orders for week one in that you will definitely see an extension of the rent moratorium, so people not able to be evicted for not paying the rent through the winter, at least. We might see more money released to help people pay utilities this winter. A lot of people are backed up on those bills. I think they will try to do something around student loans. At the moment people dont have to pay interest on their student debt, which has been a real relief. You flashed up about whether they can actually try to forgive up to 10,000 by executive order without congress. And i think if the senate doesnt come along and help them try to pass more stimulus, theyll try stuff like forgiving 10,000 through executive order. Heather long, thank you as always. Practice squad receiver kendall hintton will start and they wanted to activate a coach to play, but that was denied by the league. Also, at this time in the show yesterday i told you briefly about a historymaking moment in College Football the first female player to ever taken a field for a division i power five conference. History is on the field in columbia, missouri, as sarah fuller is about to put her right foot into a football, speaking volumes to women around the world. And shes done it.
