You are at synagogue on shabbat morning, when you are there with your family worshipping and being with your community on the day of peace, day of rest. Nbc Miguel Almaguer is in pittsburgh with the latest on the investigation. Miguel, youve been asking the tough questions and trying to find those answers. What have you learned about not only the suspect, but also the exact crime that he allegedly committed . Reporter richard, investigators have been very clear about the motive. They said this was a heat claat. What youre unclear of is how much planning went into this, if it was decided when he woke up or if it had been planned. Synagogue is a massive building. The suspect walked in, began to open fire, worked his way through the basement killing victims tlr victims there, killing more victims on the first floor, and then he was engaged with police on the third floor where he had the shootout where he was wounded and eventually s surrendered to investigators. In three different rooms they found the 11 victims in total. Three different congregations who used that facility. This is a massive crime scene that will take them more than a week to process. In the meantime, this community is leaning on one another. Home to tens of thousands of jews who all came together right after this cries it situation. Heres what the mayor said earlier today. We will get through this. We will pull together. We will support our Jewish Community while we also support our Muslim Community as we support our christian community. Thats what pittsburgh is about. This is a welcoming city. This is a city that the shooter believed that what he would do was somehow take away our strength in our diversity, he is completely and was completely wrong. This will strengthen us and well be more welcoming as a city. Reporter as the Jewish Community leans on their faith more than ever, were also learning more about the gunman. We know that he had brought in four weapons, three handguns and an assault rief fle. We asked how many shell casings were spent. They didnt have that number or werent ready to publicly share it but said a lot of shell casings were found inside the church. To give us an idea of how long this gun battle lasted, were also told it may have took about 20 minutes for police to stop the shooting in all. Thats quite some time for these victims to be inside. Many of the survivors were barricaded inside that synagogue behind me where they waited for First Responders to help. Neighbors told us they could see people rushing out. They said the elerderly were beg carried in some situations. The suspect is due in Court Tomorrow morning. He faces 29 criminal counts including 11 counts of murder as well as some hate crimes. As youve been talking to the authorities and your sources there in pittsburgh, what are they focusing on in the next two or three days . Just 24 hours ago they had a lot of questions still outstanding. Reporter theyre trying to pin together the timeline here to figure out exactly not just what happened during the shooting, but what happened in the hours, days, and weeks prior. They told us they were going through Surveillance Video around this area trying to pinpoint the gunmans basic guidelines around where he was going and how he made his way here, who he may have been talking to and having conversations with online. They say he was part of an online forum where he shared and spewed hate speech, so theyre going to look to figure out who he was speaking to in the days and weeks leading up to this attack and if he had any help. At that point they believe he acted alone, but they have not ruled out any chance he may have been communicating with other people. Miguel almaguer there tracking the investigation for us with the very latest. We now know the names of the victims in saturdays moose shooting inside the tree of life synagogue. Eight men and three women. They ranged in age from 54 to 97. Six people were also injured d including four police officers. Matt bradley is at the University Medical center. 24 hours ago there was some question. How are those that were injured . How will they fare after they gate out of surgery . How are they doing today . Reporter well, weve talked with some of the officials here at the hospital behind me at pittsburgh University Medical center. Of the six who were injured, four of them were taken here. We understand now two of them are conscious and two of them are in intensive care and breathing through tubes. Theyre not aware, theyre not conscious. As you heard earlier this morning in the press conference, theyre hopeful at least one of those people are going to be actually taken out of the hospital today. Two of those victims of the four here are actually police officers. Among the victims, several of them were police officers. I spoke with the head of the trauma unit and heres what he had to say about the recovery effort. Its hard to know the two most critically ill what the trajectory recovery will be. They have the best and brightest around them. Our goal is not only to provide that care, but support for the family and the community. What happened, it happened to people that we work with. Theyre part of our family. Its not just a different event. Our job is to actually do the medical part, but also grief with them. Reporter that man who is going to have the longest recovery is in his 70s. He had several shots to the abdomen and that is a Recovery Process thats going to last months, probably years, richard. Theres a lot more to this. Theres the family members and the friends of the victims who died. Weve been talking to them today. A lot of them weve been piecing together whats in common with all these people. Two of them were actually a married couple. Two of them were brothers. Both of them had the brothers had intellectual disabilities. One thing that we saw a common strain through a lot of them is a commitment to Public Service through this tight knit community of Squirrel Hill and also a deep and abiding religious fervor among all of them that lasted well into the later years of their lives. Well embraced as well as well known after 150 years in the community. So many looking for all of those who were injured or recovered. Matt, thank you so much for that. The they say yesterdays shooting is likely the deadliest attack on the Jewish Community. And antisemitic attacks have been on the rise. There were 2,000 incidents of antisemitism. Thats a 57 hike from the year before. Hate crimes are also up all together. Last year incidents rose 12. 5 in the nations largest cities. Its the highest jump in a decade. Lets bring in frank, mn nbc security analyst, chief operating officer for ets risk management, jonathan greenblatt. Great to have both of you here on this. Frank, as you put on your old hats, many of them, why are we seeing this National Rise in hate crimes . Of course, including the Jewish American community. So obviously hate is a complex subject. There are many variables that go into people acting out violently. Clearly theres a couple that we know of that have been studied and theyve been studied because we have a great body of scholarly work with regard to radicalization that can be applied to this. One is disenfranchisement, people feeling theyre not a part of whats happening. So theres this desire to put it on the other, the stranger, someone else is causing our problem and we need to lash out toward them. The other is the culture of enable men enablement and the mindset of its okay in this environment where were not getting slapped down. There arent the barriers, the speed bumps to acting out and speaking out in a hateful or violent manner. We can talk all day about whether the white house is enabling and facilitating, but i do think theres an analogy here between online radicalization of radical islamic extremism and what were seeing in our culture today which is people looking for usually unstable people looking for something to belong to, a cause greater than themselves, and feeling like its okay to do this because no ones telling me i cant and the top of the heap, the administration seems to be fostering that mentality. You know, as you say that, frank, i want us to go back to that full screen, that graphic we were showing as we discuss the microof t of the macro. Just look at these numbers. Look at that proportion. 50 representation of incidents that are religion based. Yeah. The Jewish Community in the United States continues to be the most frequently targeted faith based minority around hate crimes. I would agree with frank about the phenomenon of how people can be radicalized online. Antisemitism has been persistent for thousands of years. Jews have often been the victims of scapegoating and slander and we are seeing it here today. 50 as you saw there of religious based hate times. Whats going to work to counterbalance this unfortunate imbalance . Keep in mind that weve seep a decrease in antisemitic i wants incidents in the United States. The fact of the matter is antibias education in classrooms has a lot to do with exposing young people to the fact that people, despite their difference, we all come together. I think the media has something to do with it. Now social media has allowed the worst kind of stereotypes to spread before as frank said there were speed bumps. But we also need our leaders to lead. Last year we saw 57 increase. That included almost a doubling of antisemitic incidents in k through 12 schools and we saw an almost 97 increase at colleges and universities. Whether its the president of the United States or a University President or a pta president , we need people in positions of authority to interrupt hate when it happens and to speak out and create environments that are welcoming to everyone long before theres an act of violence. Frank, youre very aware, super aware of this very issue of hate crimes as we were just talking about given your experience in this and jonathans. We look at antisemitism. We know its there. You see that number. When we brought it up yesterday, you are shocked, arent you . You are surprised. Youre also reminded and then you say okay, what can be done different. Jonathan was sharing some of the ideas, one or two of those. What have you seen in government that works . Well, the government has been wrestling with years about how to counter radicalization generally on the International Scene and its a complex issue, but youve got to give people another way to identify with something. If theyre trying to fill that hole with hate thats inside them, youve got to give them other things and role models. People need to speak out. We should see our political leaders coming up far more than they are, quite frankly, and saying this is wrong. We cant accept this. And then education as has already been said is a hugely important thing. Exposure to that thing that you seemingly hate gets you an increased understanding that were not very different, are we . So exposure, education, and that role modelling that theres another thing you can identify with that will tell you thats not right. You can belong to this group over here and were not hateful people. Jonathan, finish for us here. 15 seconds. Youre got 25 officers across the country. Whats the emotional 10 or of the community . Anxiety. Concern. Also resolve. There are more than 40 events across the United States that were participating in. Vigils . Vigils, service, ceremonies, and many other communities are coming together. We will not be daunted. We will not be frightened. We will move forward. As a country. Indeed. Jonathan greenblatt, thank you. Frank, as always, thank you, sir, too. He still attacked some of his favorite targets. A vote for mike is really a continuation to make America Great again. Very simple. I did a little tiny bit of research and mikes opponent, brendan kelly, is a vote for nancy pelosi and of course m Maxine Waters. Our panel, grace, political reporter and Danielle Moody mills, evan sigfried republican strategist. What is domestic terror in the time of trump . Well, its, you know, what weve seen is some of this radicalization, some of this affection that turns into violence that weve seen frankly from abroad has come to the United States. The question is how much of this is the function of the dialogue we find ourselves in, the environment we find ourselves in, and the president is a part of that. President is the only elected official that has a national con t constituency. The president plays a unique role. And the question has to be is the president the consoler, is that different and will that be different for the next administration . I do. I think that it is different right now because i think the country is leaderless. I dont think the president has done enough to bring people together, has done enough to console in this time. A few hours after the incident in pittsburgh he was tweeting about the baseball game that was happening. He made a joke about his hair being the raeeason why he was going to cancel a rally event. People are dead. Multiple people have been killed by someone that has been charged by his rhetoric. We need not look at the president for leadership. We need to look for each other for the guidance and consoling because its going to be the people that bring us together. Not the president. We need to stop looking at him. Just build on what they both have said. Weve seen those two donald trumps. Weve seen those two president s. You might say it is prompter president when he is reading prompter and prepared remarks and then off prompter that often gets those critical of him to say i dont know. Weve seen the president whenever weve had this happen. After charlottesville he read off the prompter. It was wasnt the best initial going forward. People say well, hes not continuing this because hes going out and tweeting about other things. Its he cant stay on message. He thinks he has to check a box, i say a couple of things and its fine. He has sta toto stand up for am. His communications, it was wholly inappropriate after Maxine Waters after she got two bombs sent to her and go after cnn two hours after they had to be evacuated because there was a bomb sent there. Weve seen increasing rhetoric on both sides of the aisle where weve seen republicans being attacked at a congressional baseball game. If we use language that inspires fear of the respected bases, somebody who is mentally unill, theyre going to go out and take action. Ive been a victim of political violence. Somebody recognized me from tv and sads youreid youre a repu you hate minorities, and attacked me. As we look at those accusations that we talked about, were going to talk about later in the show, how is the president doing in counter balancing that message . He was on the campaign trail yesterday. He had two stops. How did he do . I mean, he kept campaigning, which i think sort of answers the question. We in local politics, theres a saying theres no democratic or republican way to pick up the trash. I think for Many Americans there has been a sense there is not a democratic or republican way to respond to a moment of crisis in our country. People have a level of expectation that their president is going to be the consoler in chief and perhaps will hit pause on the politics button at least for 24 hours, and were seeing with this president that hell give the prompter message. Hell give what he has to do. Well check the box, but hes not going to derail his political plan or his agenda. In fact, especially last week with the pipe bombs, we saw him be very clear about his level of frustration that he felt like his political plans for the next 10 or so days were being derailed by bombs as he put them, in quotes. We are seeing a president who is intimating theres a force behind that. Exactly. I want to bring in a bit of sound. Von hilliard with Vice President pence. This goes to the point that there are others that are fermenting this idea that things are not being addressed appropriately when it comes to hate. Lets take a listen. Have you ever asked him to please not use that type of language when referring to other people for the case of civil discourse in this country . Look, everyone has their own style. Frankly, people on both sides of the aisle use Strong Language about our political differences. But i just dont think you can connect it to threats or acts of violence, von. I dont think the American People can connect it. The American People believe that those who are responsible are the people that actually conduct these threats. Is that the right message . Well, first of all, the people who did these acts certainly are responsible for them, but you have to question what environment this happens in. Nothing happens in a vacuum. So the level of dialogue, the level of discourse, the level of animosity, you make a great point about social media. Social media is where some of the worst of this comes out. Theres no way to regulate that. Our leaders have to try and take the volume down. Its uncincumbent on our leadero consider that their responsibility. As we look at this, were going through a lexicon of how to talk about hate. We were just learning about how to talk about Sexual Assault. Yeah. I also think that its really important that we dont have false equivalences about whats happening. Theres one party that has used hateful and violent language. This president has attacks people directly, has attacked their character, from calling them whacky to questioning their iq levels to questioning their patriotism as one of the founders of the berther movement. There is one party that has been doing this. Now, we can talk about passion and we can talk about, you know, energy when were at rallies, but the idea is that this president has literally put targets on peoples backs. Right . Sarah palin used to have on her website politicians in cross hairs that were up for election. That we have to be very clear about this kind of it was proven to be not connected whatsoever. Hold on, danielle. If youre going to spew a lie on tv im not going to spew a lie. The shooter was politically motivated and he was mentally ill. There is a connection between the rhetoric coming out of the mouths of people that are part of your party and the connection in the dogs whistles that under your definition, may i please something . Dont tell me im saying a lie on National Television. Under your definition of happened, the man who shot up Steve Scalise was heavily influenced by Bernie Sanders. Did Bernie Sanders go on National Television were going to have to leave it there. You are coming back, all four of you, and we will bring down the energy level just a little bit. I appreciate definitely the debate here. Clearly that is representative of what we are seeing now in many different corners. Coming up, ill speak with a political commentator who warned twitter after receiving threatening messages from mail bomb suspect cesar sayoc. Sayoc cancer. Its very personal. Each of us is different. Authorities saying sayoc had a history of threatening behavior including posting violent rhetoric about public figures like joe biden and ieeric holde. This months he wrote a threat at our next guest who worked for democrats in the house. After richie gained an appearance on fox news, sayoc tweeted, quote, hug your loved ones real close every time you leave your home. End quote. Thats just part of what he said. Michelle richie joins us right now. First of all, what was your reaction when you read we read a lot of things on social media sites, but what was your reaction to that . I was really shocked. I was shocked that a white supremacist had reached out and threatened my life on twitter. It was disturbing and i was concerned about my family in kentucky considering what just happened in kentucky with the white supremacist that shot two africanamericans in the back of the head while they were shopping at the grocery store. This was very concerning to me. This was before, of course, the week of incidents. Yeah. This was october 11th on this day i had made a couple of tweets about kanye west, so im not sure if he was responding to that, but that is the day that he responded to me. This was before i think even the first pipe bomb was even found. So i report today to twitter immediately thinking that maybe something would be done, but sometimes you see these accounts and you see these Trump Supporters and you look at their accounts and youre like its another nutjob so you dont think i need to go to the police. It wasnt until the day he was arrested that people started blowing up my phone saying you need to contact the fbi, this was the guy that threatened you on social media. You reached out to twitter. What did they do . You reached out to the fbi. What did they do . The first time i reached out to twitter they sent me back a response within seven minutes of me reporting this tweet. This means they took seven minutes to look closely and they determined it was not abusive behavior at that time. Is the response right . Hello, thank you for your recent report . We have reviewed your report carefully and found there was no violation of the twitter rules against abusive behavior. Right. Did you feel like this person it was hello, you . No. It was literally just a generic there was nothing. They have since put up a tweet apologizing to me. They did not tag me in the tweet and i did not know they had even issued an official apology until this was read to me on air. So i never really got a sincere apology. I feel like they were trying to cover themselves from making a serious error. This happens to a lot of political commentators and hosts on television. Are you going to followup now that we have seen what has happened this past week . I am. Ive reported it to Law Enforcement authorities what happened to me. From now on, if i get a threat like this, im not going to social media. Im going to the police. So the right way to handle this youre saying is go to the plus. Absolutely. These websites are not doing anything about it. The fact that Robert Bowers was able to have such hateful speech on this website, they have blood on their hands as a result of what happened at synagogue in pittsburgh. Youre talking about this right now. It may happen again. Has it happened again since that initial early october incident . When you go on a conservative network and you have a left leaning view, im used to be calling the n word, the b word, but if you threaten my life, guarantee im going to police. And your loved ones. Absolutely. Thank you so much for sharing that incident. And for what you have done since. Appreciate your time. Still ahead, the red flags of spreading hate online and what can be done to stop it. O s. For your heart. Your joints. Or your digestion. So why wouldnt you take something for the most important part of you. Your brain. With an ingredient originally discovered in jellyfish, prevagen has been shown in Clinical Trials to improve shortterm memory. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. Welcome back. Authorityi authorities are looking into the digital footprint left behind by Robert Bowers as they piece together events leading up to the Fatal Shooting in pittsburgh. The suspect frequently wrote on the social network gab where he made a specific threat against jews hours before conducting saturdays attack and hours before the killing spree he reportedly posted on the social media site writing screw your optics, im going in. The mail bombing suspect sayoc, bowers has a history of spreading hate speech on social media. Weve been looking into that tracking both suspects online presence. When you dig deep, you dig deep. What did you learn about the digital footprint . Tell us more about gab too. You have this gab. Com. This is a site that pretends to be a twitter site, but its really for a lot of hatred and garbage. It has about 500,000 users. Its down no doubt because of what happened. The social postings were highly antisemitic and very obsessive when it comes to firearms. Those are the three buckets i would put the posts in. And so when you look at those three buckets, were there kwo were been talking about how if you read through some of this, theres an issue at hand here. Gab clearly doesnt have any checks and balances, or they do have checks and balances . They really dont and this is because theyre a purported free speech carrier. That is their platform. Plenty of red flags. Gab is where a lot of the users kicked off facebook and twitter end up. As much of a hard time we give twitter and facebook, a lot of the users on gab have been conflicted off twitter in the past. Were looking at those that are going to a customized News Consumption scenario. I dont work here in these particular platforms, im going to go there and theyre going to take care of me. And if that is the dynamic of the economy of information, i dont know based on what we know where well end up at. Will we continue to have issues like this . You know, this is one of the places where the First Amendments protected speech intersects with language that is not protected. For example, communicating a threat, that is a crime in virtually every jurisdiction, including in the federal system. So you can say listen, i hate politician x. Thats protected speech. I want to kill politician x. That is not protected by the First Amendment or anywhere else. I think we just throw up our hands and we dont have a careful enough discussion of what kind of speech is criminal and what kind of speech is protected by the First Amendment. When we see those stickers planted all oversee sar sayocs van with targets on Hillary Clinton and barack obama, that crosses the line and that should be addressed by Law Enforcement. I think theress sou a sound l argument that is communicating a threat. Lets take this back down to the ground in terms of the very space were in. Where folks are going to get their conversation. So cal, youre on the campaign trail. Are they using, do you see a lot of folks talking about social sites like gab, alternative spaces other than twitter or facebook and the usual . No, because they dont need to find gab. You go on twitter and spread this information, you can spread fake news and do all of the things the suspected bomber did. When you have this middle area, that needs to be flagged and it needs to be tracked. Theres plenty of things on twitter that will lead authorities to the bombing suspect. In fact, we sort of know that was one of the things that led them to the suspect. The change in behavior that the bombing suspect exhibited, before 2006 and after sorry, before 2016 and after 2016 is absolutely phenomenal and stark. Before 2016 normal middle aged man, the New York Times kind of makes the joke lots of goodlooking women and food on his social media post. After 2016 he goes to isis, Hillary Clinton, guns, fake news and misinformation, an absolute switch. Very clear distinctive move. I want to read a statement from gab saying they suspended bowers account after antisemitic post. We first backed up all user data from the account and then proceeded to suspend the account. The thing about this, though, when we do look at this, glen, theres a perennial meaning within the last four years debate of should we go to the belt way to get some laws put in place . Should we let the very industry selfgovern and make it better . And it seems like the industry has moved forward in leaps and bounds. Theyre trying to do better. I would suggest lawmakers need to look at this. Putting my prosecutors hat back on, i will say there is an upside. This may sound cynical, but often when were prosecuting cases, its very difficult to prove somebodys intent and their motive because judges instruct juries every day theres no way to look directly into the human mind and see what somebody intends. We have to infer intent from what they do. Here, now that these people are on social media announcing their hatred, swrechoing what our commander in chief is saying, we have a deep well of information we can use to prove motive and intent when the sayocs or the bowers act out. This is a really good point. We hear this from intelligence analysts when it comes to the telegram isis uses. Leave it up, because it provides us with the evidence we need once we go out and get these guys. The buzz, as they say, that youll be able to get information from. Great to always have the two of you around. We could spend an hour as i like to say if they gave it to us. Thank you, cal perry. Thank you, glen, for your time on this topic. So youve been watching along with us, right . Nine days to go until midterm elections. It might feel like nine weeks. Candidates are hitting the Campaign Trial to make their closing arguments. In the volatile aftermath of the mail package bombs and pittsburgh synagogue shooting, voters will have plenty to consider when they step into their voting booths next tuesday. Lets bring back our panel, grace, danielle, evan. Grace, what are you seeing right now in terms of the midterms nine days to go . Theres a lot happening in new york state. There is a ton happening in new york state. We have hey lot of competitive races. For me at least in new york city ive been very focused on the race on stat on island. Republican dan donovan was facing a democratic challenger max rose, but we are seeing a lot of outside money come into the race to support max rose. At least theres still a big question mark, though, over that race and i think frankly overall these midterm elections about the impact of what weve seen happen this past week with the pipe bombs and then with this synagogue massacre. At least President Trump doesnt think its good for him political. He tweeted as much this week. Both sides lose control to a certain degree of the conversation they want to have. We have seen the democrats focusing on health care so much. The republicans talking about the caravan heading toward the border. But now you cant ignore what weve seen with pipe bombs. Both sides losing control of the narrative in the final critical days. Im watching obviously the polls and the political report, 538. Im trying to i love watching this race move on. The question is local national tension, the messaging that might be local, is it maybe so local as it used to be and what does that mean . Its a nationalized election. Its one of the few elections that weve seen, particularly the midterm cycles. Turn outs are going to be down. Its one of those races where were seeing the National Forces drive outcomes. Members of congress have always wanted to disassociates themselves. They want to be seen as people who bring things home for the district, but youve got this tension at play. For republicans the last couple of weeks have been very animating. Judges with kavanaugh, Law Enforcement related issues. These are sweetspots for the republican base. When the president speaks to these issues, theyre speaking to the issues to motivate the base. The democrats have had a little bit less messaged discipline. Theyve tried to settle around health care. Its not clear that is going to motivate enough people to get them across the finish line, at least on the september side. The house side has a much better side. The senate side is a done deal. But then the week happened. It did, but remember, a lot of people have voted already. We tend to focus on election day, but in arizona youre going to have 70 in before election day. All of these things that have happened are much more significant than whats happening right now. You mentioned health care. Lets listen to former president mbah a moute on t barack obama on the very topic. The fact that republicans right after election time are suddenly saying theyre going to protect your bpreexisting conditions when they literally have been doing the opposite . Thats some good of hutspah. Lets call it what it is. Its a lie. When you look at the top five issues mentioned in senate ads, yes, is health care for both sides of the aisle . Is that the topic . I mean, i think its the topic for most americans which is why we had obamacare run through. I think its a topic for most people because we spend tens of thousands of dollars on it as individuals and millions upon millions of dollars as a nation. And yet we have republicans that are saying, you know, were going to have topics about health care. Its going to be okay with your preexisting condition but were not going to do anything to make sure you have health care and make sure that health care that you have is good. They want to do this kind of pull them up by the boot straps, youll be okay its not our job to help you conversation around health care. Its something that incredibly important. Democrats are the only ones that have had a plan. Republicans have voted how many times to vote down obamacare, but they had never given the American People a replacement. Its a tough one for those candidates who were against pretty consistently as shes intimating against obamacare. This is a resident issue, im in for it now. Trying to sell it and i think he was right when he talked about the senate being a done deal. I think there are going to be surprises. Look at whats happening in michigan. John james was down by 16 and 18 points and now its six points in a competitive race. Were seeing Heidi Heitkamp absolutely commit hari cari where shy revealed Sexual Assault victims without their permission. She could lose by 20 points. Were seeing other closer races. I think the thing is with the house itself there is messaging that goes on thats on a national level, but also local issues. We have house numbers too as well. By the way, the topic has been brought up. Im looking through this and youre looking through it as well. Not there. Of the races, which one that youre watching quickly, you have five seconds. Im watching abrams and gil lam. Pete king on long island, strong republican for a long time. The new Jersey Senate race, i think that will be very interesting. Hugan has shown some surge there. The kentucky, andy barr against amy mcgrath. Mcgrath is running against increased republican registrations. If shes able to pull it off, expect a huge wave for democrats.
