Administrations staff. Let me be very clear. Im 100 confident that no one on the Vice President staff was involved in this anonymous editorial. I know my people, margaret. You asked them . You know, honestly i dont have to ask them. Because i know them. I know their character. So will the real anonymous senior white house official please stand up some might be saying. More than two dozen Administration Officials have denied and are denying authoring that oped, President Trump saying the Justice Department should launch an investigation into who wrote it. The president saying its a National Security matter. Joining us now, sociegloria mar, and michael waldman. Host of woke a. M. On sirius xm. Should the Vice President question his staff directly . He said he understand who they are and everything should be okay. If he wants to have confidence in their actual answers and their truthfulness, then he should ask them the question unless hes fearful of the answer. The emperor has no clothes. The people within the administration say theyre fully clothed. We the American People need to know. We need to know is what youre saying. I have to ask you this, michael. Since youre the master of words on this group here. Well all put our hands up to that and defer to you here. Who wrote that . Who do you think wrote that . One question of course is how senior was the person. Thats right. Journalists will sometimes call Someone Senior who the rest of us might not think is so senior. But the bigger question is it came right after the leak of the bob Woodward Book which has dozens of senior people saying the exact same thing. The question to me at least is not so much who wrote it and its a fun parlor game, but what are folks in congress and what are voters going to do about it . In all those words, what did stand out in the words . Not to put pressure on you, but i little pressure on you. Theres one word for example, lodestar which Google Search found mike pence uses and im sure he broke into a cold sweat which wh th when they figured that one out and apparently he hasnt asked the staff because he has such confidence. The Vice President actually mentioned the word lodestar. Thats how he defended the question. One of the claims made in the oped is that there have been discussions of invoking the 25th Amendment to even remove the president from office. Have you ever been part of a conversation about that . No, never. And why would we be . That was actually his statement on the 25th Amendment and he also is saying thats another list of what they did not talk about, have not talked statement on tuesday for the same length of time. Its been a big problem. With this oped writer, i think they made a grave mistakes twofold. First as ben sass said, when you have a president whom they say is paranoid and prone to rage fits and making impulsive decisions, why are you going to feed that paranoia . Second, it feeds the base of the Republican Party who is saying that there is this deep state against trump. It just confirmed everything. And now you have prominent Trump Surrogates who havent exactly prone to pushing Conspiracy Theories like matt saying the kavanaugh hearings, Woodward Book are part of a massive conspiracy. I know twitter banned alex jones, fbut it seems others are taking up his mantel. Plus we have the claims of treason plus threats to National Security. Treason and the constitution is giving aid to the enemy. This is not treason. This is someone who is a disgruntled employer who is i do think the idea that the 25th Amendment might be invoked that to me is fan fiction for frustrated progressives. That was there for when a president is in a coma or has medically diagnosed dementim di Something Like that. Thats who the Electoral System chose. I disagree. The last living person who actually wrote the 25th Amendment was interviewed by me and he said it did include psychological issues as well as medical ones. So i would disagree that the 25th Amendment is off the table. I do think that it would be very difficult to do anything to trigger the 25th Amendment. Were going to have to leave it there. He thinks hes napoleon is the. Here we are the incapslation of the great debate going on right now. This morning in his first live interview since his sentencing, papadopoulos spoke about how his case fits into the Bigger Picture of the Mueller Investigation. Take a listen. Do you think when the entire Mueller Investigation is finished that they will demonstrate that there was collusion between the Trump Campaign, between trump advisers and the russians . You know what, george, i have no idea. All i can say is that my testimony might have helped move something towards that. But i have no idea. All right. Joining the panel, Karen Defense Attorney and former cia operative and 2016 president ial candidate joining the table. Karen, that might be some might say one of the understatements of the year or two years or five years or a decade here if he were to be that seed ling that started this whole investigation. We saw the article come out a week or two ago, right . His lawyers are trying to get leniency for his sentencing. Now we actually hear from him saying this very thing. It seems like when i sat there in front of Jeff Sessions and donald trump that they were kind of in favor of my suggestion. Hes saying that in interviews right now. What does that mean for sessions . Well, first of all, sessions obviously gave testimony and has been asked by multiple journalists, so this seems to be a little bit of a trofcontrover here. Does Jeff Sessions just not remember this conversation at the meeting . This is a little bit of a bombshell in the sense that he says theyre fully aware. Now, what was his understanding of the meeting . Obviously hes going to listen, some explaining needs to be done, right . What was his understanding of that question . Maybe he will say there might have been a meeting. We talked about lots of things. We talked about russia and korea and talking to all of these people, so obviously we dont know what the context was, but this is definitely a bombshell. This seems to be in direct opposite of what hes already said. Evan, if youre sitting in the room, regardless of what side of the aisle you might have been on, and you hear that, hey, by the way im going to go set up a meeting with vladimir putin, what would your reaction be in this context with russians . I mean, its a clear obvious know. Any certainly any president ial campaign that even has half a clue about what its doing would reject that out of hand. But really this idea of a meeting, theres nothing illegal about a u. S. President ial candidate meeting with even someone like vladimir putin. Its a terribly bad idea politically, but thats not illegal. I know theres a lot of focus on that, but what i think is more interesting actually is what happens in the meet. What happens in the meeting, but even more importantly for papadopoulos, did papadopoulos tell the Trump Campaign that the russians had dirt on Hillary Clinton that they had stored. Thats the critical issue. Papadopoulos says interestingly, and i dont think incredibly, but Special Counsel probably knows much better, that he doesnt recall telling the campaign that he had heard this from this professor mifsud, this man who is associated with russian intelligence. Thats very peculiar that papadopoulos is out bragging about this at a bar to an australian diplomat and claims to have told another diplomat but at the same time says even when he was seeking the campaigns approval that he didnt tell the campaign. I find that very hard to believe and very unlikely. Whether or not it was credible is interesting. After i talked to him i asked him to contact other people but i really didnt find him to be credible. Thats interesting because its half one way and half the other. Let me add to the detail that has been talked about so far in the last 2 30. You talked about the Professor Joseph mifsud. Where is the professor . Part of that link between the Trump Campaign and these potential discussions with russians may have died. Might be missing now just to add another layer to the story. So the question is, as this goes forward for mueller, what does this all mean for his case . And what are we seeing in terms of the progress of this case, do you think . Well, i think all of the questions have already been asked. I think obviously hes on tv which he did a very good job with his interview for the first time. Was that coaching . Well, you know what . This is what struck me with the whole thing. He actually goes into detail how the fbi came up to him when he was at the airport and he was trying to put his passport into a machine and they put the badge in his face. I think the viewers have to understand that hes going to jail for 14 days for lying. One of the things that strike me both as a Defense Attorney and a prosecutor is how welling people are to talk to fbi agents when theyve just walk up to them or knock on their door. This is the perfect example that please, go talk to your attorney first. Danielle, what are you hearing on your show in terms of As The World Turns shall we say in this very case . You know, i constantly here from my colleagues, they call in from all over the country. The reality is when you are a dog and you lie down, you wake up with fleas. These are the groups of people hes around. We have this whole mystery who done it in so many different areas because theyre criminal. Their behavior is criminal. You would not have to ask all of these questions and have all of this followup if they were transparent. Theres a reason why theyre not transparent about their relationships that they have, the meetings that they go on, whos in them, whos privy to them because they know theyre doing something wrong. That is the pattern we have learned over the course of these many, many, many months that make me feel like i am 116 years old because every day it is another lie. It is something that they left out, something that they forgot. Oh, i forgot i didnt have this kind of clearance to talk to this person. No, you didnt. Youre covering up your tracks. Thats what they do. Thats what criminals do when theyre trying to hide bad behavior. I think that one thing ive already evan, im sorry. Theres evan one and evan two. The one thing everybody is missing is i think the white house is relieved George Papadopoulos is coming out and thats becoming a center of attention considering the week theyve had. Theyve already gone over George Papadopoulos. Its so nuanced that a lot of people have tuned it out and theyre saying you know what . Something happened. I cant keep up with all the details. Its coming at us at a friequic pace. They dont want to be talking about the oped and woodward and how randy went and testified before a grand jury and it looks like roger stone might be indicted in the next month or so. If i can jump in and say one last thing about papadopoulos. So papadopoulos says in response to questioning this morning, you know, im not sure if this will result in a collusion or conspiracy charges against trump, but i probably helped things move in that direction. But then he also says i dont remember telling the campaign about the russians having dirt on Hillary Clinton. So my question is then what did he say too investigators that would lead him to believe he pushed things closer to conspiracy . What other piece of information does he have . 15 seconds and then ill get killed on the air ear. I thought this was obviously information we havent heard about. We are going to digest it and ask more questions and im sure mueller is going to have a lot more questions for a lot of people that were on the peripheral that will come center stage. Will it take us closer to ending it or take it closer to this investigation continuing and continuing. One thing i know is its going to take us closer to break. Karen, thank you for stopping by. We appreciate it. Everyone else stick around. Its a tale of two president s on the campaign trail. Donald trump and barack obama. Youve seen it. The difference rather in their messages and how voters might respond. Well take a look. Ooh, heaven is a place on earth uhp. I didnt believe it. Again. Ooh, baby, do you know what thats worth . I want to believe it. [ claps hands ] ooh im not hearing the confidence. Okay, hold the name your price tool. Kids whoa kids vo safelite repair, safelite replace in two months we have a chance to restore some sanity in our politics. We have the chance to flip the House Of Representatives and make sure the real checks and balances in washington. Well, 57 days until the midterm general elections and three more primaries just coming up this week by the way. And all sides are bringing out the big guns. You saw there this weekend former president barack obama after a year and a half away hitting the campaign trail. Sharply criticized the policies, directly criticizing the policies of President Trump and the republicans. It wasnt clear approximate President Trump was watching or sleeping, something he said he did during obamas previous speech. But he is tweeting today. Barack obama talked a lot about hope, but donald trump delivered the american dream. All the economic indicators, whats happening overseas, donald trump has proven to be for more successful than barack obama. Well, trump and obama each have several more campaign appearances. Still unclear which president will help his party more. Lets bring our panel back. So who will help their party more, evan m. . Donald trump or barack obama . Well, ill say this about the midterms. I think the best thing the republicans have going for them is the state of our economy which is thriving. Look, im okay even if somebody who is very opposed to President Trump and the republicans contributed to that. The recovery was on the way during this administration. Its continued. Fine. The thing is the electorate has already priced that into the midterms and the president remains unpopular. You really have to work to have an Approval Rating at 40 with an economy thriving. What that means is any other bad news that comes for the republicans or the president then is theres only downward opportunity here. Not upside. Thats kind of looking at old school politics. My pocketbook is better today. Danielle, we have this other x factor this round, this last two or three years all set when we hit the midterms of all of these headlines. The op sed thed this week, the Woodward Book. The 18 lawsuits, the Sexual Assault cases. Will that overweight the pocketbook is my question . What i think is going to happen and i said this before, whats going to drive people to the polls is outrage. People are outraged. When barack obama stands up for over an hour at the University Of Illinois and is talking about sanity and civility and hope and all of these things, hes reminding the American People what a leader, what your president is supposed to sound like. Its supposed to act like. The dignity that is supposed to come with that office. I think that it was a stark contrast that he had that we havent seen because this has become our new normal. Twitter and new melt downs have become our new normal. I think the midterms will be a rebuff of him. The cadence and the language is different and opposite this current president , but evan, all the way down there, s. , there is whether the youth vote will be enacted and brought to the polls. Thats what the president , former president was saying. Hey, where is the youth vote . Youve got to get out there . I think the president is a Little Johnny come lately overall, the former president obama because the anger she is referring to is the Abundant Energy source and its being renewed at record pace. In the millennials only one in five identify with the Republican Party. Its a new study. Ive been studying this for years. Were seeing Voter Registrations across the country. The minnesota Secretary Of State released friday the new Voter Registration numbers for 2018 was 57,000 in minnesota. Of those 68 were under the age of 30. And then were seeing it again in pennsylvania. Young democrats in pennsylvania now outnumber Young Republicans by 400,000. Pennsylvania the new registrations for 2018 two thirds of which under the age of 30. When we did a research of study of millennials, will they turnout compared to other generations, well 62 of youth me lin its goino happen and people are missing this. Pick any numbers that evan s. Was putting out there. The senate, will it in various states across the country, Real Clear Politics looking at nine tossup seats five held by democrats, four by republicans at the moment. Ted cruz is a great example there in texas. Tennessee is another good example. Look, theres Tremendous Energy on the left. Theres no denying it. You see orourke out there campaigning gaining traction against an established republican senator who ran for president , who had a chance at winning the nomination. And hes gained National Attention because his message is resonating. The senates in play. I think its very hard. In red state. In red states. I think its still very difficult for democrats in the senate but it is not impossible and republicans have a lot to worry about. I think its likely now we see that the general ballot in the house is headed at least the democrats have a 14 point advantage in the house on a generic ballot meaning most americans at a 14 point advantage would rather see the house and democrats hand in the republicans. In the house its more sure. In the senate its difficult. The former president barack obama now out on the road. Perhaps well see evan mcmullen a former president ial candidate also hit the road. Evans, thanks for sticking around. Everyone else well see you right after the break. Still ahead for all of you, fear and loathing. Bob woodwards book about whats really going on inside the white house. Now set for its official release this week. What the fallout tells us about the people running the country. I think youve always been fair, but well see what happens. You know its a tough look at the world and your administration and you. Right. Well, i assume that means its going to be a negative book, but im sort of 50 used to that. Thats all right. Some are good and some are bad. Sounds like this is going to be a bad one. President trump is bracing for another white house tell all book this time coming from bob bo woodward. President trump apparently no longer believes woodward is fair. Hes now calling the book a work of fiction. It means nothing. Its a work of fiction. If you look back at woodwards past, he had the same problems from other president s. He like to get publicity and sell some books. Woodwards book officially arrives tuesday. Joining us now to discuss the book and how it will impact the white house we have the president historian, president and ceo of the lbj foundation michael waldman. Former Chief Speech Writer for president bill clinton and back and danielle and evan also back with us. Mark, lets start with you, new to the panel here. What do you make of the excerpts so far from woodwards book about to officially come out on tuesday and if the president actually rejects these excerpts, this is different. This is an investigative journalist that actually has notes. That has recordings. This is different this time as you point out because this is bob woodward. He has amassed a certainly credibility in his time as a journalist going back to water gate of course. Since then hes come up with a number of books that have been sellers and made headlines. Hes never really been called into question. A former editor of the New York Times wrote in a piece for the Washington Post that woodward is truths gold standard. He is a reporters reporter. He bases his conclusions on fact, on accounts from the individuals in the white house. This is a little different than Michael Wolffs book. On page 331 where it says details in the books, one of the excerpts about how they had gone through some practice here with his counsel at the time, dowd, and it turned out to be disastrous. This is what happened in the practice session. Basically john dowd saying youre not just a good witness. Michael, this is just the beginning of what might be more revelations, because when woodward gets out on to the Interview Circuit with omarosa, who knows what other details might come out. This is a several hundred page book and as has been said, woodwards facts stand up. People might agree or disagree with some of his judgments. My producer says hes got receipts. Hes got receipts and some scalps of other president s to prove it. And i think that at a certain point the kind of who done it, the drama of the release i hope will get overshadows a little bit by some of the revelations such as President Trumps lawyer saying that if he testified before robert mueller, he would end up, quote, in an Orange Jumpsuit meaning hed be in prison because hed be lying. Theres a real scandal unfolding here and we still have seen no action really from congress to look into it. And this is where it plays into this election. It is truly a strong economy. Normally that would mean the party in power would not suffer so many losses. It will be an interesting question of whether the revelations overwhelm peoples calm about the economy. One of the other excerpts, page 109 in the excerpts that we have gary cohn reportedly, and ill let you know because youve been reading through this in recent days, snatching a draft letter that was ending the u. S. South korea trade deal. There was actually a copy of the letter in there. What more might come out because we know woodward now has to follow omarosa who i think rewrote the standard of introducing a new book. Yes. Shall we say. Yes. I think that the difference, theres a big difference between her book and his book, one, because shes just a celebrity. She just wants the celebritiness of whatever is going to promote her into the next show. Woodward we know is a journalist. He has the most integrity, utmost integrity. The reality is to your point, we should be investigating what people are saying. Is it true. Where is congress. Why is this not terrifying to them that there are staffers th that are running around taking papers off the president s desk because theyre terrified of what hes going to do. Why is that not something that should be alerting us and saying congress, this is something that you should investigate. This isnt just hearsay anymore. 30 seconds to you. Well, i think the book itself reveals a dysfunctional president and it all trickles down from the top. Hes somebody who contradicts himself. The willingness to publicly belittle generals, his after his first time that he went to the Air Force Base in the initial days of his presidency, seeing the remains of the fallen u. S. Soldier, he told his aides never send me to one of those again. We see that jared and ivanka will free lance and undercut things. We see i think a huge portrait and i think there are going to be some figures who are controversial who will come out very well like gary cohn and rob porter. Mark, what happens on tuesday when this toune comes out and americans get to read this. I dont know what else we have in the book. These are the revelations that have come out to this point are very concerning. You essentially have the president s staff saving the president from himself. Thats just not something that weve seen in the white house before. We havent seen aides taking action in order to mitigate what might be otherwise a crisis. This is something very different. And i do believe that Congress Needs to take a very serious look at this president and what needs to be done in order to keep him contained. Do you think that theyre ready this time around after what happened with, again, omarosas book . Well i think you have two. Theres a one two bunch last week. Theres the Woodward Book and we have yet to see what is in the balance of that book, although what has been revealed to this point is very disturbing. You also have the anonymous piece in the New York Times that show not only the staff essentially forming a Shadow Government at the white house, but also questioning the president s morality. These are disturbing developments. A real charged discussion we had on a sunday. Thank you all. This week investigative Journalist Bob Woodward joins nbc news for the first life interviews. This happening for the First Time Since the release of his book. Tomorrow on nbc woodward gives his first live interview to Savannah Guthrie on today. Tuesday woodward sits down for a oneonone interview on the Rachel Maddow show. Serena williams claims shes being penalized for having behavior that is celebrated in men. For me to say thief and for him to take a game, it made me feel like it was a sexist remark. Hes never took a game from a man because they said thief. For me it blows my mind. Serena williams there calling out saying sexism and double standards in tennis, this after her loss in saturdays u. S. Open final where she got a heated argument with umpire carlos ramos. It all started when ramos gave williams a Code Violation after he waurned her coach was instructing her from the stands, something her coach admits but williams denies. It was followed up with a Point Penalty for smashing her racket and a game penalty for calling ramos a chief after their confrontation. You owe me an apology. You will never ever ever be in another game of mine as long as you live. When are you going to give me my apology . You owe me an apology. Say it. Say youre sorry. Announced today, just today, the u. S. Tennis association announced it is fining the 23 time grand slam champion 17,000 for those violations in in her japans naomi osaka. Lets bring in our sports writer. Is this an issue of Gender Inequality . Was it sexism in terms of the way shes been treated and find today and how other players, like djokovic about look at what hes done during games . I think its definitely a question of sexism. The fine, not necessarily, but the threshold for what was deemed verbal abuse was much lower for serena as weve seen from djokovic or nadal. One of the issues is that throughout sports theres a notion that umpires, officials, referees, theyre at their best when you dont remember their names. And the fact were going to remember carlos ramos name is history. She didnt use any curse words, first of all. That has to be there. She didnt threaten him or anything. She really just wanted on apology and she took issue with the idea of the implication she was cheating. Everyone kind of does this, so the idea that that was the first penalty really set her off and she was understandably upset about it. Billy jean king, she put out a couple tweets defending serena against what has happened so far. She said several things went wrong. Coaching on every point should be allowed in tennis. It isnt, and as a result a player was penalized. When a woman is emotional, shes hysterical. When a man does the same, hes outspoken and there are no repercussions. Tyler, what do you think . We can take ate step further. It would be a combination of race and gender to show the bias. Specifically here not only just the fact theres a difference between the man and woman dynamic, but its a black woman, her experience and what shes going through is being policed. Serena williams is the greatest player that ever lived. And so the fact that she cant show emotion as shes losing a game is ludicrous. Andy murray, nadal, numerous male athletes have done the exact same thing and they have never been penalized and rarely receive a warning. You remember a Code Violation was issued when a player took her shirt off. She complained saying there are many male players that take off their shirt altogether. Why cant she do it too . Its a complete double standard. Whats the status of tennis. Im sorry. The Usta Standards and the culture of the sport . It goes back to victorian notion that tennis is still embroiled in about modesty. Tho that women are supposed to be demure and champions dont get heated in the heat of the moment. Serena williams is an emotional person, very soft spoken during press conferences, but in the middle of a game its understandable the emotions will take over as an athlete. Tyler, the u. S. Open in new york is certainly a different animal than maybe the french open as well as wimbledon. During the french open they said no more cat suits, not only because of Serena Williams, its also because of other players who have also worn cat suits in the past. What is wrong twith cat suits o body suits . Nothing. Theres nothing wrong with a body suit. Shes using that because it was better for her health not only to save her own life because of the blood clot shes had but rejuvenating her own black experience. The tennis world doesnt deserve Serena Williams. Every time she steps on the court, her body is an act of dissent. Because of that, her black womanhood is something more powerful. When it comes to Gender Equality its more important than winning another grand slam at this point. She had to beg to play tennis. Thats not what millions of people should have to experience, but, again, its an implicit bias being used against Serena Williams and its racism thats very clear. Whos going to win out here . Serenas going to win out, obviously. The public is behind her. I think that tennis has to realize that they need serena more than she needs the sport, frankly, and she is as tyler said is much bigger than tennis tennis is. She comes out the winner here absolutely. We have to mention naomi osaka because she was actually the winner as well. The first japanese player to ever wayne grand slam.
