The modern history of our country, and he must be defeated. Tragically, we have a president today who is a pathological liar and who is running a corrupt administration. He clearly does not understand the constitution of the United States and thinks that he is a president who is above the law. In my view, he is a racist, a sexist, a homophobe, a zen phone and religious bigot. He must be defeated and i will do everything in my power to make that happen. Last night obviously was not a good night for our campaign from a delegate point of view. We lost in the largest state up for grabs yesterday, the state of michigan. We lost in michigan, missouri, and idaho. On the other hand, we won in north dakota and we lead the vote count in the state of washington the second largest state contested yesterday with 67 of the votes having been counted. We are a few thousand votes on top. What became even more apparent yesterday is that while we are currently losing the delegate count, approximately 800 delegates for joe biden and 660 for us, we are strongly winning in two enormously important areas which will determine the future of our country. Poll after poll, including exit polls show that a Strong Majority of the American People support our progressive agenda. The American People are deeply concerned about the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality in this country, and the American People want the wealthy and large profitable corporations to start paying their fair share of taxes. Overwhelming support for that. The American People understand that the federal minimum wage of 7. 25 an hour is a starvation wage. They want to raise the minimum wage in this country to a living wage of at least 15 an hour, an the American People understand that if our kids are going to make it into the middle class of this country, we must make public colleges and universities and trade schools tuition free. The American People understand that we cannot continue a cruel and dysfunctional Health Care System. It is amazing to me to see that even in conservative states like mississippi there is an overwhelming understanding that we are now spending twice as much per capita on health care as do the people of any other country while 87 million of us remain uninsured or underinsured. And this crisis, this absurd Health Care System is becoming more and more obvious that the American People as we face the challenge of the coronavirus pandemic that we are currently experiencing. Imagine facing a pandemic and having 87 Million People who are having a difficult time going to a doctor when they need. And the American People know, unlike donald trump, that Climate Change is an existential threat to our country and the planet, and that we need to transform our Energy System away from fossil fuel to Energy Efficiency and sustainable energy. And the American People also know that we need fundamental transformation of a broken and racist criminal Justice System as well as a cruel immigration system that keeps millions of People Living in fear. But it is not just the ideological debate that our Progressive Movement is winning. We are winning the generational debate. While joe biden continues to do very well with older americans, especially those people over 65, our Campaign Continues to win the vast majority of the votes of younger people. And i am talking about people not just in their 20s but in their 30s and their 40s. The younger generations of this country continue in very strong numbers, to support our campaign. Today i say to the democratic establishment, in order to win in the future, you need to win the voters who represent the future of our country, and you must speak to the issues of concern to them. You cannot simply be satisfied by winning the votes of people who are older. While our campaign has won the ideological debate, we are losing the debate over electability. I cannot tell you how many people our campaign has spoken to who have said, and i quote, i like what your Campaign Stands for. I agree with what your Campaign Stands for, but im going to vote for joe biden because i think joe is the best candidate to defeat donald trump. End of quote. We have heard that statement all over this country. Needless to say, i strongly disagree with that assertion. But that is what millions of democrats and independents today believe. On sunday i very much look forward to the debate in arizona with my friend, joe biden. And let me be very frank as to the questions that i will be asking joe. Joe, what are you going to do for the 500,000 people who go bankrupt in our country because of medicallyrelated debt, and what are you going to do for the working people of this country and Small Business people who are paying on average 20 of their incomes for health care . Joe, what are you going to do to end the absurdity of the United States of america being the only major country on earth where health care is not a human right . Are you really going to veto a medicare for all bill if it is passed in congress . Joe, how are you going to respond to the scientists who tell us we have seven or eight years remaining to transform our Energy System before irreparable harm takes place to this planet because of the ravages of Climate Change . Joe, at a time when most young people need a Higher Education to make it into the middle class, what are you going to do to make sure that all of our people can go to college or trade school regardless of their income and what are you going to do about the millions of people who are struggling with outrageous levels of student debt . Joe, at a time when we have more people in jail than communist china, a nation four times our size, what are you going to do to end mass incarceration and a racist criminal Justice System. And what are you going to do to end the terror that millions of undocumented people experience right now because of our broken and inhumane immigration system. Joe, what are you going to do about the fact that we have the highest rate of childhood poverty of almost any major country on earth and are living with the fact that 500,000 people tonight are homeless and 18 Million People families are spending half of their income to put a roof over their heads . Joe, importantly, what are you going to do to end the absurdity of billionaires buying elections and the three wealthiest people in america owning more wealth than the bottom half of our people . So let me conclude the way i began. Donald trump must be defeated, and i will do everything in my power to make that happen. On sunday night in the first one on one debate of this campaign, the American People will have the opportunity to see which candidate is best positioned to accomplish that goal. Thank you all very much. Senator Bernie Sanders after a series of very difficult defeats just yesterday decided his campaign will go on as you heard him say, his number one priority is to defeat donald trump. Clearly he believes in spite of a lot of pressure from people who want the Democratic Party to consolidate around joe biden, hes not ready to leave yet. There is word inside his campaign. There are people who believe maybe there will be an opening. Maybe joe biden will have a bad debate. Maybe hell make a gaffe. The reality of the situation is that the numbers dont work for him. Its a long shot for him to win the nomination, but he wants to be able to keep his issues out there at least one more time. He did call out one of the demographics where the numbers have worked for him, among younger voters. He said the Democratic Party is going to have to engage some of the voters for the his future. Its a demographic hes been good at engaging thus far. He seemed to preheat the debate, the line with joe what are you going to do about this or that . Brought up a number of things to kind of flip the script in terms of the electability argument pushing more toward winning the ideological debate on Climate Change and health care and education, making Higher Education tuition free. Ending mass incarceration and a racist criminal Justice System and ending the absurdity of billionaires buying elections. So Bernie Sanders certainly is not done with this election. And hes kind of trying to change the debate to say okay, you want to be the front runner, then run in front and show us how youre going to do it. This is your one on one chance to show us essentially what youve got. Again, the one group that he indisputably has in his corner, young people, he has not expanded enough. They have not voted in the numbers that he needs them to vote in. And michigan certainly put a stake into the party of one of his key arguments that he was going to build the coalition. But theres no doubt about this when it comes to Bernie Sanders. That 30 , 35 that have voted for him where he has won and more where he has won are people who feel very passionately about him, and who joe biden if he does become the nominee is going to want and need them in his corner. The nbc exit poll showed voters under the ages of 49 for sure, under the age of 40 went very heavily for Bernie Sanders. Once you reach that kind of 40, 45 threshold, it becomes very much for joe biden who clearly Bernie Sanders is not seating this race to at all. The debate theyre talking about, a lot of people have been looking forward to it. Its going to be held in phoenix without an audience. The reason its not going to have an audience, obviously, coronavirus. And that brings us to what were discussing for the rest of this hour. We are going to focus on the coronavirus outbreak. The World Health Organization is now calling it a pandemic. Were going to strip away the politics and just get the facts from the experts. No you have overwhelmed us with your questions about this deadly outbreak in america and around the world. But wed love to have some more. Use msnbcanswers on twitter, facebook, and instagram. You can also email us tal talk msnbc. Com. And before we dive in, lets be clear the answers will be based on what we know now about the virus. What we know will change as the outbreak changes and nothing we say can substitute for the advice of your doctor on your specific situation. Yeah. Because what we do know is the story is changing at breakneck speed. Lets get to the latest. 1,027 people are infected in the u. S. There are many states with confirmed cases than without. 30 americans across the country have died. A lot of schools and businesses telling everybody work from home. The leaders of the cdc and National Institute of allergy and emergency diseases were called to an emergency meeting. Dr. Fauci told congress the outbreak will get worse. And the markets are being hit hard. The dow is down 1254 points. This is what were hearing from regular folks. President trump and his administration as well as the nations governors and mayors. Is the worse yet to come, dr. Fauci . It is. We will see more cases and things will get worse than they are right now. How Many Americans have been tested . How many will be tested . And what is that likely to mean for the number of cases here in the United States . So george, the key thing to know is we have and always have had the capacity to test anybody. If this continues, im not even sure how long i could survive like this. Were prepared and doing a great job with it. It will go away. Stay calm. Over 1 million tests are out thanks to the diligent work of the cdc and hhs. More than 4 million will go out this week. I am very scared today. In seven or eight weeks there could be 64,000 people infected in the state of washington. Testing is top of mind in the state of california. Weve tested 1,075 individuals. I think this is going to be the Public Health version of hurricane katrina. We had a great panel of our top experts, our Coronavirus Crisis team to answer your questions. Dr. John torez is with us. Also epidemiologist dr. Joseph fair, an msnbc science contributor. Former Veterans Affairs secretary, david shulkin. Also Business Correspondent and msnbc anchor, stephanie ruhlruh and also dr. Natalie azar. We have pages of questions. Were going to try to get through as many as we can. The number one question we got over and over and over again are about the basics. Theres so much misinformation out there. I get emails from friends of mine who i think are really knowledgeable that come from incredibly unreliable sources. Lets start with what about the symptoms . What precautions can i take . And the symptoms we know about now that weve learned over the couple months, whats happening here, the difference between flu and coronavirus is the question. They start off about the same. People start getting the fever and muscle aches and runny nose. No with coronavirus they turn into a respiratory. In the early stages as physicians, we cant tell a difference. They talked about the number of tests. Its a struggle for a lot of physicians to get that test done for the patients. If you think you might have it, do to your doctor. Call your doctor. They dont want you to come into the office until they know so they can protect you. That means putting a mask on you so other patients are protected. Clarify shortness of breath. There are gi issues that can make you feel like you have shortness of breath. How severe . The big difference is if you have difficulty breathing, but you have a fever associated with it, you have other symptoms associated with it, not just the kind you get from reluxe wheflu. Handshaking . Precautions . Weve been seeing the elbow bumps. The fist bumps. We said the fist bump its still your hand. It still transmits. I did a man on the street. I went out on the streets of new york to talk to different groups from people visiting. A variety of things people are doing. Theyre not doing handshakes. They said uniformly, stop going handshaking unless its someone you know. Do foot kicks, different things. Lets go to specific questions from our viewers. What if youre recovered and still contagious . What do you do if you think you have coronavirus and recovered from it . For two and a half weeks in january i had all the symptoms of coronavirus but recovered. Remember during the illness struggling to breathe and thinking this is different. I contacted my doctor a week ago to find out what to do and was told they have no way of testing. Dont come in. And then they said were glad youre feeling better. Let us know if your symptoms come back. What do you make of that . Well, i think its really important to understand that the vast majority of people who have these symptoms of flu or cold do not have coronavirus. So checking with your doctor, i agree, calling in and getting the right questions answered because we dont want people who have bacterial infections to avoid getting treatment with the right antibiotics. This is a disease that can be spread through the air, but more likely spread by touching things and the virus can live up to 8 to 10 hours. Thats one of the questions i have gotten and weve gotten in these questions. People have heard everything from two hours to two days. How do you know . For example, ive seen buildings in new york that say every two hours were going to wash all the Elevator Buttons and the doorknobs with antibacterial wipes. People are confused about whats enough. This may be one of the bigger questions. Looking in our email boxes and continuing to check twitter and facebook. One of the top questions is how much we know about the nature of the virus, especially how long it lives. So this virus is new to science. Were still trying to figure out a lot of the basic answers. I can say definitive Laboratory Studies on coronaviruses and there are thousands of coronaviruses that we already know about. This was one we didnt know about before. Up to nine days is what weve seen on scientific laboratorybased studies is up to nine days. Id rather err on the side of caution. That may not necessarily be the case with covid19, but again, err on the side of the caution and think up to nine days and clean regularly. Beth sent a question about having various other Health Conditions that might make you more at risk. Not just for seniors but for children. Beth emailed my 37yearold daughter has a compromised immune system with lupus and a heart condition. Her sevenyearold daughter rides the school bus with a best friend whose mother works as a nurse in a walk in chin out. Should my daughter keep her daughter out of school because of her compromised condition . The schools say they will hold my daughter truant if she does so. One of the real problems that were seeing with the lack of having enough testing available, and i know were working hard to get the testing out, although, increasing increasingly, theres supply issues with the testing. When you dont have this information, you have a lot of fear and concern. And basically, getting back to the question of your other viewer, the right way to know whether youre contagious or not after several days of being incubated and quarantined is three negative tests. But if you dont have the testing available, how do you know . I think when you have somebody who is vulnerable, you have to err on the side of being cautio cautious. That may mean Holding People out of public situations. From there, and whether your school can go to school and come back and potentially infect you. Heres one on a doctors office. Im concerned about the pediatric dentist. Its fully booked, impossible to reschedule. It did not surprise me a woman showed up with two children and one had a terrible cough that was nonstop. The mother was at the checkout desk for ten minutes while the child coughed and played with a balloon and bounced all over the place. Sara almost 60 says what do we do about the fact that no one can be trusted to be safe unless theyre forced . Thats one of the things people are looking at. Before weve been a polite society. Dont want to embarrass anybody by asking them to cover up when they cough or sneeze. Children are less likely to get it but that doesnt mean they wont get it and pass it around. And so if somebody is doing that, it might be time to say do you mind covering up when you cough and sneeze . Nobody else wants to get it. Thats tough to do it and i understand that. Maybe you get the staff to help, but thats why we keep putting out the message about covering up when you cough and sneeze. Because of situations like this, that can spread something if they have it. We have overflowing with questions. Well have another opportunity for you to get more information on this tonight at 8 00 p. M. On nbc news now. Theyll continue the conversation with basic information. You can find it on the nbc news app. Well also get to more of your questions. Keep sending them in. Talk msnbc. Com. As the coronavirus continues to spread so do the questions about everyday life. Were getting them online and as were doing this. For example, can i take that spring break trip with the family . Is it okay to go to the movies, to a restaurant . What about school and work . How do i balance real life with a very Real Health Threat . Were back with our Coronavirus Crisis team. Lets talk a little bit about social distancing which weve been hearing about. I mean, i know we i was about to that puts me closer to you. I got another foot on this side if you need more room. But its not a joke. This is not a joke. Its not a joke. This is how Public Health experts classify this mobilization that were doing right now. In the beginning when you have an outbreak, the goal is for containment, identify, isolate and keep it contained. Once you start having community spread, spread throughout the community where theres no direct link to an index case, youll see more cases that you cant control. Youre hoping to mitigate the damage of that or the impact. And one of those things is social distancing. We dont have the way we have with flu, we have a vaccine, no such thing exists with covid19. What we saw with the rise in cases in italy and china, the expectation is thats going to happen here. The only thing that stops that is keeping people away from one another to avoid transmitting to one another. Its fairly simple. But should we really emphasize that with high risk populations which goes to cindy, allens question which is shes supposed to lecture a group of 20 of 20 to 30 people over age 60, most of them. Should we still have this meeting . She also organizes rerequitiree play tennis. Is it safer outside than inside. All questions im getting from patients. Questions im getting on twitter. And i would say that it is not a one size fits all. But know the facts. If youre over the age of 60 and definitely over the age of eighty, we know the immune system is compromised as we get older. Also we know that at any age if you have underlying conditions like lupus or take medicines that suppress the immune system, youre at a greater risk for getting Something Like this. So each individual person has to say what is my risk . Whats my age, my underlying medical problems . Whats the degree of viral activity in my area . What is my risk and how am i going to mitigate that . Its also the aspect of keeping people apart when humans are social animals and you look at the other countries who have been able to affect some of the quarantines and social distancing. China is a totalitarian state. Italy is a small nation. Singapore is a city state. Were talking about a nation of 340 Million People who are fairly strong willed. Who also are starting to think about getting cabin fever . We got this comment from carolyn. Carolyn is 73 and wrote after only two days of deliberately socially distancing myself from others, im starting to fear cabin feverish. Im not usually a people person, but im feeling some kind of way about having to stay away from my sweet and devilish grand nephew. He is five and attends a nicesized day care kindergarten which makes it a germ factory. Monday he was kept home because he had a cough. I went buy to drop off cough medicine, before i could get out the door, he had me wrapped up in hugs. Sadly, i know its for the best to stay away from him and his mother, but im missing them already. I think this is where getting the right information and staying on top of this since the situation is changing so rapidly, is important. And in particular, i worry about people that are acting out of fear. I know patients that are stopping or delaying getting chemotherapy, not going to the doctor or hospital when they have symptoms they should because theyre scared. This is not only knowing about your own situation and making that judgment, but where the virus is in your community. There are communities where the risk is still not that significant. So as we begin to see more testing out there, getting this information staying on top of whats happening locally is very important. We have so many other questions. Youre all going to stick around. We thank you for that. Coming up today, boeing announced a hiring freeze over coronavirus concerns. Wall street is on a roller coaster as the outbreak spreads. Well look at what all this might mean for you and your money just ahead. First, there are now at least 46 confirmed coronavirus cases in new york city alone. How does the city with more than 8 Million People contain the growing outbreak . Well ask mayor bill de blasio next. And when you open a new brokerage account, your cash is automatically invested at a great rate. Thats why fidelity leads the industry in value while our competition continues to talk. Xeljanz xr can reduce pain, swelling and further joint damage, even without methotrexate. Xeljanz can lower your ability to fight infections like tb; dont start xeljanz if you have an infection. Taking a higher than recommended dose of xeljanz for ra can increase risk of death. Serious, sometimes fatal infections, cancers including lymphoma, and blood clots have happened. As have tears in the stomach or intestines, serious allergic reactions, and changes in lab results. Tell your doctor if youve been somewhere fungal infections are common, or if youve had tb, hepatitis b or c, or are prone to infections. Needles. Fine for some. But for you, one pill a day may provide symptom relief. Ask your doctor about xeljanz xr. An unjectionâ„¢. Th time, comes change. Thats for sure. And when those changes might help more people especially those in retirement i think its worth talking about San Francisco and bay area home values are up an average of 269 that appreciation could help pay for your retirement. Call now aag is working to make your retirement better. Welcome back. From what weve heard from you, you wanted us to focus on the coronavirus outbreak separating fact from fiction. Were joined by the new york city mayor bill de blasio. Were going to ask him questions and well take your questions as well. Look, a lot of people have been made to feel powerless by this. Right . Its this invisible thing. Its out there. And except for what were told, wash your hands, be careful, follow the rules from the cdc, a lot of it is out of our control. Its in the control of people like you. So i want us to pull back the curtain. How are those decisions being made . Is it totally with medical personn personnel . Are there ever Political Considerations made . Does the buck stop with bill de blasio with mayor cuomo and so on . Governor cuomo, yes. Yes, the buck stops with us. I want to disagree with the opening just a little. In fact, a couple days ago i said one of the things thats being missed here is how much, in fact, people are truly part of the solution. Because you look, we dont have all the facts about that disease. No one on earth does. Some of the things were learning tell us a lot that actually people can change the trajectory of this disease. Smart hygiene. Folks who are most vulnerable over 50 with serious preexisting conditions taking smart precautions. Changing patterns to avoid crowded areas. Avoid the situations where youre pressed up against crowded human beings. People have more agency in this than is being recognized. Government cant do it alone. Thats a statement of how you end Something Like this. Back to what were deciding and how were deciding it. It cant be about politics to say the least. It has to be about everything in our society, because the irony in our Health Care Profession, my health commissioner, the head of my health and hospital system, our Public Hospitals and clinics, everyone who is in the room with me making the decisions recognizes theres a danger of unintended consequences. With we go too far and shut down too much, well lose the personnel who do all the work that keeps people safe and healthy. Well lose peoples livelihoods. We have to strike a balance. The key thing is to inform people, give them power in the equation and then take the actions we need to issue by issue case by case, schools are a great example. Some people are closing schools on mass. We think thats a mistake. Parents are depending on the schools for a safe place and food for their kids. They dont have an alternative. What weve decided is if a school has a problem, close it briefly, clean it, get anybody who might have been exposed directly out and quarantine. Notify parents with kids with preexisting conditions they may want to hold their kids back. But the rest of the school can continue on. Thats the kind of balance we have to strike. In terms of striking that balance, how do you think about that nerms of the fact that new york is new york. We have a Half Marathon that is off. Broadway is lowering ticket prices to encourage people to come out and see shows. We know the worlds top grossing Music Festival near palm springs is called off. A number of big events called off in large venues. Its kind of impossible in new york to fully social distance. I mean, you ride the subway, walk around new york. Theres kind of no way to get more than arms length from someone else. It seems like a unique situation. Is that why you havent cancelled the st. Patricks parade . Were looking at the whole picture. Outdoor events are inherently safer than crowded small space indoor events. Were working on a plan now, and i hope we can shape this up clearly, that we want its not that people cant go to dinner together. Its not that people cant go to school together. Its creating the smart kind of balance. Not crowding too many people into too small a space who are the most vulnerable people. We know here in america were seeing it. It is much less a problem for younger people than older people. To shut down the lives of everyone healthy is a mistake. But to create some smart balance and particularly to protect those most vulnerable is smart. Were going to work with the folks who organized the st. Patricks parade to make a decision soon. And certainly well before the parade happens. But when you look at everything else, theres special conditions, theres a crowded city. I think the thing is were not trying to shut down human life in the city. We are not anywhere near that point, and i think there are huge unintended consequences starting with for peoples livelihoods through which they pay their rent and get food and everything else, that we dont want to trip that wire the wrong way. But we can start to create more and more balance, more and more opportunities for people to be safer. And last thing i have to say, transmissability. So how do you actually get it . What our Health Care Professi professionals are saying is theres a debate over surfaces. They dont believe surfaces are the main concern. Person to person. God forbid i sneeze at you and you have a direct liquid, its graphic, forgive me, into your mouth, nose, eyes and i happen to be infected, that is the concern. I have to be right up decades a decades of experience between them. Theyre checking in with the cdc, nih, state health department. Constantly reviewing literature. New information all the time. Everyone is taking that process seriously while accepting that we will not know enough quickly enough about this brand new disease. But to your question about dos and donts from other places, the places that have taken it hardest were way out of position from the beginning. The crisis was well upon them before there was an opportunity for brace in contact and prepare. It went from nothing to full blown crisis. China, they were in crisis and the government wouldnt tell people the truth and the crisis exacerbated. Theres a better response in south korea. The german case is a great one. What were gleaning is the stronger your Public Health system, the more transparency the better. Were inu; a very good place in that. Weve been transparent. We have a strong Public Health system. Lots of testing. Testing the right people. Test people with a travel nexus. Dont test whoever walks off the street. Our doctors say if you have those symptoms immediately isolate j stay home, dont go to work or school. If it persists, or gets worse, get to your doctor. The doctor does a test called bio fire. This is something i didnt know before this week. It is the standard test i think its for 29 if im remembering very typical normal diseases that weve known for a long time. That in a matter of hours will tell a doctor if its not coronavirus and something more quote, unquote, traditional. If its not that, not one of those diseases and its serious symptoms, even without the travel nexus, those poke folks get tested. What about more draconian measures . When do you decide to shut down the subway . Anything is conceivable, but theres a little too much rush to judgment. I believe this. To the buck stops question. Though i think people want to know theres a plan in place. Theres a feeling that in some other countries, in the federal government level. There isnt. Things are not in place. Where are the tests, for example. They want to know are all we have the biggest best police force in the country, best Public Health. We are now doing scenarios for each of these when you have to shut down, each piece of your city. But i dont want people to hear that and think oh, great, thats inettable. It is not inevitable. And i dont want people altering their lives so much that we cause a different crisis which is so much degradation of everyday life and of our Economic Life that people dont have a livelihood, that people dont have any place to go who need a place to go. That we have to understand i am not theres 8. 6 Million People, more cases of many other diseases that we take seriously right now. So the idea is strike balance, constantly monitor the situation and make adjustments. The big plans, of course were starting to draw them. We have some on the shelf and were refining them. We could do that at a push of a button. I have Emergency Powers to shut down things quickly, but i hope not to have to use it. I am one month into living in new york. Welcome. I am 21 years. Weve on the edges of the spectrum but we appreciate you helping not just this city but other cities think through how this might be Going Forward and mayor, thank you very much. Come back. I think the questions are going to arent going to go away. I appreciate the good questions youre answering. I cant shake your hand. There we go. Easy. Thank you, mr. Mayor. We have a lot more to talk l to know about how much fears will affect the wallets of the average americans. Stay with us. Youre watching msnbc live. I cant believe it. That chad really was raised by wolves . Which one is your mother . Thats her right there. Oh, gosh. No, i cant believe how easy it was to save hundreds of dollars on my Car Insurance with geico.
