All the stops. President trump now expected to visit the cdc today after signing an 8. 3 billion coronavirus package from congress. Even as governments around the world are struggling to keep up with the crisis, the president doesnt sound worried about whats happening in the u. S. So here we are. 8. 3 billion. Its an unforseen problem. Came out of nowhere. Were take karg taking care of it. We did an interview, a town hall. It was very good. I said calm, you have to be calm. It will go away. Not everyone is so sure its being taken care of. The white house promising to have 1 million test kits available by the end of the week. Now mike pence in charge of the administrations response admits thats not happening. Not even close. Only 75,000 tests available. Meanwhile a Dramatic Mission off the coast of San Francisco. A team of National Guardsman repelled from the sky to drop test kits onto a cruise ship where at least 21 people are having flulike symptoms. Four coronavirus cases are linked to the ship. Pennsylvania has a confirmed case. Maryland the third state behind washington and california to declare a state of emergency. No place is immune. The vatican is reporting the first case, but not the pope. And the New York Times reports that Tokyo Olympics organizers are talking about holding the competitions behind closed doors, no fans. We have a lot to talk about. Yamiche alcindor is with us, dr. Amash yazola, and dr. Joseph fair, an msnbc science contributor. So so much to talk about, yamiche. Lets start with what the administration is saying about the delay in the test kits that we just were told we were going to have a million of them by the end of the week. Yes. This is something thats im sorry. Yamiche . The issue is this is a moment that calls for an administration that people trust and for a president that is trying to be a calmer in chief. Instead, what you have is an administration that doesnt have the credibility among a large swath of the American Public because the president said things like this is all going to be over in april. Its going to be a miracle. Hes also quoted the wrong number of people that have been c confirmed with the coronavirus. When you have a possible delay of testing, of an administration maybe had more credibility with the United States would be able to say heres what were doing. Heres why things are going that way. We have an administration where some democrats and people who are critical of the president see this as a way for him to possibly tamp down the number of people confirmed so he has to so he is looking better in terms of politics and politically beneficial her him to do that. I think its fair to say its not just politicians who have increasing concerns that the president might be hurting the response overall. In fact, weve heard that certainly on this air from a number of medical professionals suggesting that its the administration that is hurting whats going on. For example, last night he suggested, the president , the president obamas policies hampered this administrations response. Something the Washington Post fact chekded as and this is their word, bogus. When an audience member in a town hall suggested the response was confusing and minimizing, heres what he said. We were given i think really tremendous marks. You look at gallop poll and other polls for the way weve handled it. One of the things i did is closed down the borders to china and other areas that are badly affected and really having a lot of troubles in fact thats why we have only right now its a lot of people, but 11 people versus tremendous numbers of thousands of people that have died. All over the world. You know, i think one of the things that really struck me watching that wasnt just that the president continued to give out information that other people in his administration have contradicted, but it seemed that in that friendly audience there were people who also werent convinced. Thats right. The first two or three questions were about people saying whats your longterm plan for coronavirus . What are you going to do if things get really bad . Are you going to close schools . The president said we have plans for all sorts of possible things that might happen. He never said heres what happens if for six months people cant go to school or work. What weve seen even in the friendly crowd is people arer the if ied and looking to the frargs, and the Trump Administration is not giving clear answers and you have a president who seems like he wants to make sure that his political future is not upended by the fact that this coronavirus might not only hurt the stock market but might also kill thousands of americans. I think theres a lot of fear from the president s comments have not largely put the fears to rest in any way, shape, or form. The doctor is what a lot of people are struggling with. What am i to believe . A number of people said if you want reliable information, go to the cdc website, and yet, those cdc officials are some of the people that have been contradicted by this president. What is the average american to believe, doctor . So i think that theres a lot of information thats coming out there. Some of it seems contradictory. I think its hard for the general public to be able to decipher that. I think the best source of the information is the cdc. They are putting out good information about what cases are occurring in the United States. What the protective actions people should take, and i think thats what people should be following. Theres a lot of ploliticizing n both sides. It detracts from the hard work everyone is doing to try to control this. Its not a time of panic, but you need to be alert and be able to decipher what is not really true, true news and what is actually the real facts on the ground. Help us understand sort of where we are, if you can. You know, it struck me as i watched the helicopters over the cruise ship and they were dropping those tests, the coronavirus tests, you have a place where there are passengers who are ill. We dont know what theyre ill with. They could have a flu or cold. What we know is there were passengers from a previous cruise who tested positive and one of the questions i get most and im guessing you do too is do we know how long a coronavirus can last on a surface . Would it have been passed from the crew . When you look at a situation like that, what does it tell you . How do you answer those questions, doctor . We have to really accept that this is now a community spreading virus. Its not going to necessarily be contain mable any longer and probably never was. Were going to see more of this. When it comes to the cruise ship, the viruses, they are common cold viruses. They can live for some time in the environment. And be viable for several days. Most the time it doesnt last that long because of uv light and temperature and humidity changes but theres a risk it could be transmitted from surfaces. It could be circulated with mild symptoms in the crew and they could pass the alone. Well see much more of this as it goes forward. This is going to be like 2009 1 h1n 1. Thats what makes people nervous. We know its spreading but where . My workplace, my grocery store, my school . Understandably so. I think something that we need to explain is when you hear the numbers, when you hear over 100,000 people globally infected, that doesnt mean 100,000 people are in hospital beds dieing from this covid19 virus. More than half have recovered. We expect more than 30 or 40 of the ones will recover and be fine now. Thats not to underestimate the 15 to 20 that are in the severe risk category that have underlying conditions that could pass away from this. And weve seen those people were the people that in that high risk category infected in washington, for example. So you hear confusing numbers like a case fatality rate of 3. 4 from the w. H. O. But we know in Strong Health care systems and low risk categories that can be as low as. 5 . Im going to say yes, i understand what youre saying. I agree with you, but its not obviously just about the numbers. Its about the fact that the mayor of San Francisco was on this air this morning and said look, it isnt even just about the test kits. We need equipment and protective gear and setting up places for people quarantined. A lot of places you have officials saying were not ready. Absolutely. And i would agree with those statements. We cant argue those statements. Its true. And it has to be a priority. With regard to the testing itself, because we have so many limited kits right now, we have to test first the high risk categories. So the cdc has a list of prevention methods, avoiding close contact with people sick. Wash your hands several times a day. Were talking about the fact that our hands are dry. Were washing our hands so many times. Avoid touching your face. What can you tell people about warnings, best practices. How to make yourself selfaware . To be honest, it comes with time. Those are very natural instincts. People touch their face anywhere from 20 to 100 times a day fend depending on if youre wearing glasses. Cleaning down your phones, especially your smart phones. Things that come into close contact with your known routes of transmission, eyes nose and mouth. Washing your hands every time you go to the bathroom. Keeping a physical barrier between you and door handles, using a tissue. Those are your best way to prevention infection from yourself. And an important point is even if youre in a lowrisk category and i mean you can still be infected, low risk. Chances are youre going to survive. That being said, you can still infect high risk categories. So everybody has to do their part to both prevent themselves as much as possible from getting the virus but especially if youre sick, prevent yourself from transmitting it to others. Not only is it the biggest prize in the primaries when voters in six states head to the polls. There are 365 delegates at state. Theres also another big reason michigan is significant. This is one of three critical midwestern States Donald trump turned red in the president ial race. And that sets up the battle royal between joe biden and Bernie Sanders. So important sanders changed his schedule to head to michigan as hes sharpening his attacks on biden. Joe biden has received Campaign Support from at least 60 billionaires. Hes receiving support now from former mayor bloomberg, one of the wealthiest people in this country. And joe has an active super pac. Joining me now is New York Times political reporter katie glick, democratic strategist and former executive director of Democratic National convention, bazl smiekl, and gabby orse. Lets move away from the states with the large black p populations. Joe biden is winning them. It pertains to be very good for him, not just because of the black populations but that whoit working class voter on the other side of this for joe biden and Bernie Sanders, i think joe bidens entire electability argument centered around that early in this race. So a lot of folks went to the polls believing that he could bring the voters back to the democratic fold. So i think he can do well there. He being joe biden. As a strategy are you scratching your head about what Bernie Sanders is doing saying you know what . Im just going to go all in in michigan . Not all in, thats an exaggeration. But taking a switch. The strategy to make joe biden in terms of the money hes getting, i dont understand that. Because joe biden didnt have money for a long period of time. I dont understand that line of argument. But i understand his need to do it right now. Because he has to promote that narrative that hes been promoting since day one. I dont think it works on joe biden. Is it make or break for Bernie Sanders in michigan some. Its a critical moment in the campaign. Bernie sanders was expected to do very well in a lot of super tuesday states. Just earlier this week, and he ended up falling short in a lot of places. Joe biden who really a week ago had run for president three times at this point he had never won a state. But he had an extraordinary turn around in South Carolina and a host of states that voted on super tuesday. That sets up michigan for a critical test can Bernie Sanders regain some of the momentum that he had . The joe biden get the momentum . One of the cautions between now and tuesday is will Elizabeth Warren endorse, and if she does, what would that mean . Absolutely. She is consulting behind the scenes and trying to figure out what shes going to do. Her endorsement could offer a lot of momentum for either of the candidates. Not necessarily in michigan, but in other states where they will be competing as the primary contest continues. I want to go back to one thing that bazl said, a fantastic point about the White Working Class voter. Thats really going to play a prominent role in the outcome of michigans primary. This is a demographic that both the candidates claim they have significant appeal with. And really, this is the contest that will prove arguably who is more competitive against donald trump in the fall. Donald trump flipped michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania, because of White Working Class voters and if either of the democratic candidates, joe biden or Bernie Sanders, can cut into that in a significant way, then i do think it gives them the claim moving forward that they are the most wellpositioned to go up against trump in november. The clock is ticking. What do you do between now and then if youre joe biden or Bernie Sanders to win them over . Joe biden has a great argument. Because its sort of noun, verb barack obama, but this works. You have this region that has done better and was saved, quote unquote, because of the work of barack obama even under fire from some folks because a lot of people didnt want him to do that, but he did. And if joe biden can continue to attach himself to a barack obama and talk about his work with the former president in supporting this region, i think thats a winning message. Yeah. Gabby, even if warren endorses one way or another, you have to believe that its going to come back to who can beat donald trump in many ways. I completely agree about the argument that joe biden has, but if past his prelude, one of the things theyre going to be looking at is who can beat donald trump. Yeah. Absolutely. And i do think that the Trump Campaign is gearing up to do what they can to sort of go after both of these men in the next few days, leading up to the michigan primary. You can expect them to point out the former Vice President joe bidens record on trade which is something that could get him in trouble with michigan voters. He endorsed nafta. He stood by that trade pact, and that is something that is not necessarily as popular with workers this michigan as it once was. On the other hand, they can go after Bernie Sanders who was one of the lone senators to vote against the usmca trade deal, the trade agreement with mexico and canada. That has been popular with a lot of workers in the midwest and these rust belt states. Expect the Trump Campaign to do what they can to sort of interfeinte interfear in the primary. Theyre deciding who they want to go up against in november and who they think would be most competitive. Michael bloomberg, we havent talked about him. Hes planning a new organization, offices in Battle Ground states. Could that be a gamechanger if, indeed, if, indeed, we see that we have a nominee who he supports who is joe biden . Sure. Well, he has indicated he very much wants to be a major player headed into the general election. This is someone who has virtually unlimited resources. I guess the question is can he make it work for biden in a way he couldnt make it work for himself . Right. And certainly there is this sort of unlimited resources there. Michael bloomberg and joe biden are very different candidates as much as they were both sort of running in the more centrist lane. Certainly to the extent we see more involvement from him. Youll probably continue to see some of the messaging from Bernie Sanders that we heard earlier in this segment. But absolutely that is a pool of unlimited resources and a number of the folks who had been can bloomberg are looking to get on board with biden. Thank you all. Right now the markets are once again in negative territory amid fears surrounding the global spread of the coronavirus. The dow right now down 435. And as that drop is happening, we did get some good news. Better than expected jobs report today. 273,000 jobs added in the month of february. Higher than the 175,000 economists have been expecting. The Unemployment Rate ticked down to 3. 5 from 3. 6. Joining me now chief economist at grant thorton, diane swank. Always good to see you. While investors are dumping stocks, there was that stock jobs report. Is this a case of yeah, but wait until next month when coronavirus is factored in or is it a sign that maybe we might weather the coronavirus storm better than some might expect . The world can be divided into two states, precoronavirus and post coronavirus. This employment report february 12th was before almost any of the effects of the coronavirus started to show up in the u. S. So it is really a precoronavirus kind of number, and the good news is it suggested we had momentum going into this. Were going to need that, particularly in the leisure and hospitality sector. Its going to be hit hard. I know of layoffs in new york has conferences have been cancelled. Thats important that we have that cushion. That said, also seasonably mild Winter Weather boosted the numbers. We got over 90,000 jobs during the two months in construction sector during the height of winter when we usually dont hire construction workers. It gave it a lift. The good news is at least were going into this with a bit of a cushion. I think thats important, because the blow will be quite substantial that we need to blunt from the coronavirus. Yeah. And of course, some countries are ahead of us in feeling the difficult effects of this. I want to bring in chief global correspondent bill neely from italy. Italy obviously the hardest hit country in europe. Thats been the impact on business there . Reporter really bad, chris. Im in milan, italys financial and business capital. The wealthiest city. This is where most of the deaths caused by the virus have been. So people are simply staying away from here. Hotels are almost empty. Shop owners tell me that business has never been this bad, not even after terrorist attacks. This is the city of fashion and football. Well, this weekend soccer games will be held behind closed doors. There will be no fans. Soccer clubs are losing their income, but its tourism, really, thats been hit hardest. Remember, tourism accounts for 13 of italys gdp. Thats about 50 billion a year. And the Italian Retail Association says it expects to lose 31 million tourists from now until june. Airlines are cutting routes to and from italy. Governments are warning people away. Remember, the state Department Says avoid this area north italy and reconsider travel to the rest of italy. 2. 2 million americans fly to italy normally every year. That wont be happening this year. So the effect locally is bad. For example, the famous opera house in milan is closed. It is losing 1 million a week. And nationally well, italy wont just tip into recession. Its going to probably crash into recession. And that would be italys fourth recession in 12 years. The short answer, chris, is this country is now being hammered. Yeah. Thank you, bill, for that. Diane, some of the statistics are sobering. For example, the average american takes three flights a year. What if they decide not to fly vacation. What if businesses say youre going to teleconference . Americans spend 19 million on gym memberships. What if you dont want to go a place where somebody is sweating. If somebody sneezing, there you are. Netflix pulled out of south by southwest in austin. Conventions, festivals, pump billions of dollars into the economy. Even the james bond movie has been delayed. So i guess, can the United States or at least some sections of the United States expect to see what we just saw from bill neely in italy . Unfortunately, we do see this as an economic pandemic. Its global in scope, and whats happening abroad is now going to set in in the u. S. , and we cant avoid the losses associated with that. And some of them are permanent. The key for this period in time in the u. S. , we have a Bigger Service economy than china does, and theyre suffering a recession at the moment whether they print it or not, they are in a recession in china as well. We see a global recession, a growth recession in the u. S. If we can bridge these troubled waters with some fiscal policy that allows both individuals who dont have insurance to get testing. Also some paid sick days for people who dont subsidize to companies and individuals. That get laid off from this. Thats really important. Its not very expinsive to do, and to bridge this turbulent time. On the other side, the stimulus of lower Interest Rates can take an impact and get us out of this, but we dont have to dig out of a deep hole. She gave a gripping emotional interview to Rachel Maddow and confessed the hardest part of ending her campaign was what it means for the next generation of candidates. Its what the hardest part about this. All those pinky promises, all the little girls, were going to do this. Its just going to be a little longer before were able to have a woman in the white house. And but it doesnt mean its not going to happen. It doesnt mean its not going to happen soon. We were never going to elect a catholic until we elected a catholic. We were never going to elect a black man until we elected a black man, and were never going to elect a woman until we elect a woman. So were just going to stay in this. The primary started with the most diverse group. Gabbert is only polling in single digits. So as the two white men in their 70s battle it out for the nomination, many women had deja vu like after Hillary Clinton lost wondering when will it be our time . Joining me now is Vice President of communications for emilys list, kristina reynolds, and also elaina beverly. Youre right. There is some collective frustration that the most diverse democratic field in history has been win knowed to two white males over the age of 70. I think weve learned from Elizabeth Warren were still grappling with a belief gap about whether or not a woman can win the presidency in our country. So the poll that came out last year that demonstrated that 74 of democrats said they would vote for a woman but werent sure that their neighbors would, only 33 thought their neighbors would vote for a woman to be president. The facts are that women constitute the majority of voters in every National Election since 1964. When we are ready to do that, we can do this. So its just a matter of overcoming that belief gap. Kristina, nobody knows better than emilys list. Women have done the hard work. They voted in high numbers. They volunteered. Your organization laid the ground work for lots of other organizations designed to help women run and win. Elizabeth warren herself had 243 events. She took more than 100,000 selfies. So i guess the question is when does that hard work start to translate really into a woman being president of the United States . Soon, we hope. Not soon enough. Obviously i think that one thing that these women faced as they ran for office was this question of electability. This question of with the threat of trump looming so large, can we take a risk and what voters got told, i believe wrongly, was that women were too big a risk, and what i would point them to is what happened in 2018 when women came out, we marched this. We gave money. We voted. We made phone calls and ran for office. And weve had 50,000 women reach out to emilys list looking to run for office. They ran and won in red districts, blue districts, purple districts. Weve shown we can beat republicans and beat them in the right place. I think its a shame that the women had to face this question of is it too risky when weve proven its not. I hope voters see that soon, and we can break this highest glass ceiling. A lot of people point to other issues that you could say werent perfect, as they arent perfect in that campaign. But with Elizabeth Warrens campaign. Then they asked Kamala Harris about this yesterday. She also ran, and about the idea that now you have basically two white men in their 70s, and she was not i dont think she sounded as optimistic as some other people did. Let me play what she did yesterday. Okay. The reality is that there is still a lot of work to be done to make it very clear that women are exceptionally qualified and capable of being the commander in chief of the United States of america. So given everything weve talked about, all the things women have done and the way that i think they performed, frankly, in this election cycle, how impressive many of them were, what is the work that still needs to be done, do you think . Well, look, i think it also requires somewhat of a ground game where we have organizations like emilys list, like Higher Heights pac, like the super majority that are focussed on training, running, funding, and pursuing women being in higher office. We need those organizations to continue to demonstrate what is possible, but i also think that and they have a petition out right now for a woman to be on the ticket. I think we start with getting a woman on the ticket. This go round. For the next four years, we demonstrate that we want to have a woman in the white house in 2024. Kristina, im old enough to remember how excited women were back in 1984, 36 years ago with the first female president ial nominee. Say sarah palin followed in 2008. Are we in a different place . How much different, and do one of these guys, whoever is the nominee, have to choose a woman to be Vice President ial nominee . I would argue absolutely. I think the women is the most important part of the electorate here. Women will choose the next president , and to show that a part of the ticket understands our issues, can speak for us, to break what has been our entire countrys history of not having women in those positions, i think its absolutely time to get one on the ticket. I think that will help breakthrough some of the issues where we can see how hard women have to what women have to go through to run, but also what great work they can do in office. We see that all the time. Nancy pelosi, amazing women in the senate and governors are doing great work, and i hope more voters get to see that and understand why women get things done in office. One quick thing. With all the women in the African American community that propelled joe biden this go around, if he ends up being the nominee, i imagine theres going to be a call for a woman of color to be his running mate. Its a day when the impact of coronavirus on schools is growing. Heres a small sampling of headlines from the past day. In pennsylvania the bucks count School District closed five schools. A suburban seattle School District told more than 23500 students to stay home for up to two weeks. And in Massachusetts Closed schools to disinfect schools and buzzes. 300 million kids are missing class. Leaving some to make plans. Joining me now is joel ane, i appreciate you taking the time. A lot of School Districts, administrators are going to be facing what we have seen with the state most impacted, which of course is where you are in washington. What are your Biggest Challenges right now . And what are you learning that could be helpful to School Districts elsewhere . Well, as you know, washington state, especially western washington, puget sound region, is kind of the epicenter of this thing at this point. And so our school super intendents and leaders are on the front end of this thing in terms of the processes and thinking and the planning thats occurring in School Districts here in the region. Were seeing School Districts i think do a great job of first and foremost maintaining really clear, consistent communication and consultation with local Health Department and School Districts School District leaders are not inclined to understand the science around this. So we really encourage them to continue tapping into the local public Health Department to get their guidance and get access to resources as they process and ultimately make incidences that in some cases result in the closure of school for an extended period of time. Yeah. And the vast majority of schools of course have not had to face those tough decisions yet. They have a little more time to plan. And of course parents want to keep their kids safe, but look, as you well know, many of them still have to go to work. Theyre concerned about disruption in their educations. Tell us a little bit about the communication with parents and how schools can handle this. Well, one of the major factors that comes into play when a School Superintendent is making a decision on whether to close school or not, whether its for a short period of time or an extended period of time, great care and consideration is given to the disruption that this creates for the family. Great consideration is given to the safety and security of kids when theyre not in school, and at home, in terms of supervision and those kinds of things. And so what were seeing School Districts do is remind parents to begin planning now. Planning for the worst while hoping for the best. And so we would encourage parents to be thinking about, what is your family plan in the event of a School Closure that were to extend over two to three to four weeks . Thats kind of that worstcase scenario. Extremely challenged for families nowadays with one or oftentimes both parents working. For parents to be able to get time off of work to be there at home with their children, to provide the supervision necessary, is a huge challenge for some families. And so we want to really encourage families to be thinking about that now and developing their own family plan in the event of a School Closure. Yeah. The Washington Post saying President Trumps company charged the secret service 157,000 more than was previously known Building Taxpayers for rooms at his clubs at far higher rates than his company has claimed according to new documents. It all adds to the unprecedented business dealings the president has with the federal government that he is running. Joining me now reporter for the Washington Post, carol lenning, one of the reporters who is on this. Always great to see you. As i understand it, receipts were obtained by the wash dog group public citizen. Theyve been battling the secret service for three years. What else did these documents show . Were still counting, chris. But so far these records combined with a story we did a few weeks ago at the post show the Trump Administration has charged 628,000 for 590 nights of stays at his resorts. The newer documents show another 157,000. But they also show really fascinating details. Erik trump, the president s son, said that secret service pays like cost, you know, the cost of housekeeping. He said were charging like 50 bucks. These records show theyre charging 600 to 450 a night at maralago and charging the secret service 17,000 a month for a cottage they use to add security to the president in the summer, at least in 2017 and 2018. Its a lot of money that we dont have a full view into, but this is a lot of money for just the partial records that weve seen. And it is unprecedented. Theres not another situation where a president is making money off his security following him places. Yeah, and understanding its not just hotel rooms. 590 nights and the charge is 6,628,000, that comes to one thousand 64 a night. Included in your documents were bills from a couple of trump properties. Right . Were looking at multiple locations, in the past when the secret service look, the company i work for, the company im sure you work for, they have deals, right . If youre using them all the time, your cost is lower. Would in the past there have been some sort of deal that the u. S. Government had or secret service had to not pay a premium but in fact get a lower rate . Well, you know whats fascinating about your question, chris, is that we have realtime information about the federal governments use of maralago at least, a Government Official who was coming down for a visit to talk about a v. A. Reform issue, so this person was on the governments dime. When they came down to maralago for this kind of conversation, they were charged the per diem rate, which is really what most hotels charge Government Officials. But at the same time the secret service was paying 450 a night to make sure people who head up the president s detail or the security details for his family have rooms there.
