Wednesday. Earlier the white house President Trump railed against the charges calling the impeachme impeachment process a scam. The people are absolutely disgusted. Nobody ever seen anything like this. I watched yesterday and i got to see quite a bit yesterday and i watched these democrats or committees made fools of themselves. Absolutely fools of themselves. I saw them quoting all the time incorrectly. They kept on saying me, it was not about me. It was about us. The word was us. They would kept on saying me instead of us. Can you do us a favor . What does it means of these two articles of Impeachment Voted by the committee. Well see the senate goes for a full floor and afterwards, how the white house responds. We got a little bit of a hint on that from the president earlier today saying that he has not made up his mind on whether or not they want a long or short trial. One question for the white house, one shift we have seen, ali, there is a mixture of resignation, there is an acceptance that impeachment will happen. I dont think anyone is whipping this and figuring out a vote count on how Many Democrats will defect. The general view of the white house there will not be enough democrats to stop this from happening. More of a question for garret, he may be able to weigh in here to what extend House Speaker pelosi is whipping this and how many deflection. Garret, this has been something that nancy pelosi was not leading the charge on. She was brought there by the number of democrats who thought this was very serious but the other things we know about nancy pelosi is shes a remarkable good vote counters. She does not lose a vote. Tell us behind the scene and what well be seeing . To borrow the phrase, thank you for the gentleman for yielding this. Pelosi is not going to be counting votes for this. This is a vote of conscious for her democratic members. With that said, democrats should not lose more than the two votes that they lost when they started this inquiry in the first place. We started to hear from some of the front line members and vulnerable democrats of which way theyll vote including conner lam has said hell vote in favor of the articles of impeachment. A freshman of dallas representative says hell vote for the articles of impeachment as well. For a lot of these democrats who voted to open the inquiry, theyre going to have that vote used against them. It may make their democratic supporters more angry at them. All of that is a long way of saying it looks likely democrats will probably only lose a handful of their votes if even that when this goes to the floor on wednesday. On the other side of the isle here, republicans will lose zero votes. I think he may be right. Folks we have been tracking, folks like will hurd, trumps step ki skeptic on a number of issues think the evidence is not there. And some crazy new developments which is always possible. Hans, the president in that sound byte that we heard at the top was saying and i was paying attention and i watched a lot of the hearing. I lost count of this morning after the 123rd tweets the president tweeted or retweeted the last 24 hours. This definitely got his attention. The press conference of that mi mini availability he held earlier. He was here and angry about this. Talk to me about the mood. What happens . I think he sees it himself. The idea that while they are claiming and they put the stress on claiming that impeachment is helping them with the polls, they think personally is the same on the presidency and on this president. You saw the president here, a republican control house have this idea that impeachment will be devalued and people too quickly to resort to impeachment. I dont know if the white house figured out what their strategy be in the senate . Do they want something slow . Well have to see the next 2448 hours if the white house coalesce around a single strategy. If they coalesce around a single attorney, they could defend the president and the senate. Lets talk about Mitch Mcconnell whos getting out here and now this israel and this recommendation is going to go from the house judiciary and to the house and it is likely next wednesday resulted in an impeachment of the president. Mitch mcconnell is making it very clear about what happens next. Everything i do during this white house council, there will be no difference between the president s position and our position as to how to handle this. There is no chance the president is going to be removed from office. My hope is that there wont be a single republican who votes for either of these articles of impeachment. I mean he said my hope is there is not a single republican, what is he going to do about this hes not losiing some republicans from what we see. One or two Senate Republicans vote against the president. Mcconnell is interesting here. Hes trying to avoid talking about the impeachment as much as he could knowing that it is coming to his doorsteps. Hes perfectly capable of saying absolutely nothing when he does not want to but to go on National Television and go as far as what he did tells us a little bit about their strategy. Theyre trying to present the united front between the senate and white house, a lot of democrats are upset about this. They see mcconnells role to be a foreman of a jury than a backer of the president. The reality is, this is a political process and mcconnell is being a political actor and should not be surprising. Mcconnell and some of the other folks who advised the president from the senate, i am thinking like Lindsey Graham have tried to argue subtly that they would like to see a short trial. They want to see it brought up and move on. The president wants a big, showy trial and wants to be vindicated. My experience on capitol hill taught me this. The senate wants more than anything else to not be unfavorably in the house. I dont think appeals to Many Republican senators. Guys, thank you very much, we have a lot more to talk about this. The articles of impeachment, the house drafted and passed with head to the United States house floor next week for debate and for a vote. If passed, the president of the United States, keep in mind, this is next wednesday, if it is passed, donald trump will be impeached. Hell be the third president in u. S. History to be impeached. However, we have said this before but it warrants saying again. Impeachment does not mean removal from office. President clinton was impeached, the fight heads to the nate where the trial begins, basically think about the impeachment as the indictment, members of the house will be chosen as managers to present the case. They would serve as a prosecution in the trial that takes place in the senate chambers. The president s legal team, the defense, if you will. The defense is the jury and john roberts presides over the whole thing as the judge. The jury will decide and it is a jury vote thatll make the difference. Keep in mind the senate is currently controlled by republicans, there are 53 republicans and 45 democrats and two independents. It would require 2 3rd majority vote. This has never happened in u. S. History. I did not happen for bill clinton and nixon. There are only three now in history that have done that. Shes the author of the case for impeaching trump and our former nbc analyst, carol lam. This is historic. It is hard to determine whats historic or whats not because so much as happened. It is historic. The House Judiciary Committee recommended two articles of impeachmentment to the full ho. Whats going to happen the next few days. This will go to the house ro rules committee, it will go to house floor and there will be a debate on it and then at that point, it will go to the senate. Yesterday was a deja vu in the sense of republicans arguments being made in 2019 but there was the same losing arguments that were made in 1974. I can still hear republicans, Congress People saying you have not shown a crime and they voted against the articles of impeachment, abusive power and cover up because there is no crime, they say. They ultimately change thed the minds but the same words are coming out. Has anybody learned from history, dont need a crime to have an abusive power. That was established in the standard nixon, impeachment proceedings, we had an article of impeachment with regards to documents and tapes that the president refused to turn over. The same arguments are being made, oh, you need to go to court. And ultimately the verdict of the House Judiciary Committee stood the test of time. These arguments will not stand the test of time. That was my reaction. How come they did not learn anything. Carol, lets talk about how this goes. The senate, you know the impeachment because they dont follow as closely and may think thats the end of the process. The senate is the process that resembles the trial much more than the house process does. How much does it or how much it does not . There is going to be managers from the white house whos going to be acting like prosecutors, there is going to be the president s team that acts like a defense may act. The jury which is the senate and the chief justice of the supreme court. How much is the court case and how much will the law matters verses politics. A lot of people think well it is going to have the same sort of gravity and safe guards that a criminal courts have. In some senses, it will probably wont have a circuslight atmosphere that we were witnessing yesterday. I cant emphasize how different it is going to be in terms of the nature of the proceeding in. In the criminal court, you have an impartial judge and you have no personal interests and the outcome of the proceedings, this is not only a criminal trial in a sense that the president is not going to be convicted of a crime and have his liberty taken away from him. It is a question of his finance from office and whether he should be removed from office. More than that, you are going to have the unusual situation here where people were doing the jurors. You saw how republicans are going to be aligned at the white house. You will have the prosecutors being members of congress and everything is going to be different. The nature of this proceedings is political. Hes not going to have the same kind of power that a judge in a criminal case has. It is going to be a very interesting proceeding where the rules are opened to some interpretations and it is going to be by vote by the senate as the house interprets a lot of those rules. The rules are going to be changing as proceedings are going onto some extent. We have not had a lot of experience with impeachment proceedings so it is different than anything people have seen before. Many republican lawmakers are questioning the wisdom of having President Trump calling witnesses in a trial. Theyre discussing some other kinds of speed y resolution. Talk to me about this. Given Mitch Mcconnell made it clear in the media there is no chance of removal and a couple of republicans and senators break ranks, they would need many to break ranks for there to be removals. Mitch mcconnell thinks the sooner we can get this over with, the better. A lot of republicans do not want to see the circus in the senate. What President Trump wants to see is bring in adam schiff, what he has to say about these proceedings, zero. Nancy pelosi, he wanted her to be a witness. She has something to say. Hunter biden and biden, they would turn it into something absurd because the senate is not going to sit in judgment of the house. Thats not going to happen. The president gets his way f for one of the things to be remembered that you cant call witnesses without a majority vote. Roberts is controlling the show, it is the chief judge. Basically, he does not decide anything for the most part or his decisions can be overturned by a majority vote. They dont have a majority to call these people that the president wants. There are 47 democrats, you need four republicans to come to their side and that could happen oppose that can happen. Well see what happens. Mcconnell and schumer will sit down at some point trying to work out joint rules and the house will have to name the managers, in other words the prosecutors, whos going to be named . Probably adam schiff will be named and some people distinguished themselves. Many people did distinguish themselves and whos going to make it, nancy or nancy with adam schiff or jerry nadler. Well see what happens. Thats fwoing to going to be ke. Whos the president s Defense Council and how it works in practice, what happens during the clintons proceedings, they did not want witnesses, everybody was nervous about that. They had presentation by managers of the house and Defense Council for the senate and they decide to have some witnesses take that position, whether thats a procedure theyll use now, remains to be seen. Thats a gross, violation of the elections of the duties of the Republican Senate leader in this case. What the American People deserve is a trial where we have the full facts, we should get the documents that the president refused to present to the house of representatives, we should get relevant witnesses and this should not just be hand pick by the president and his lawyers. Thats not a fair trial. Even after the polls, should president be impeached and removed from office . It is moved from a high number from october 14th c, the numberf people who have said yes barely budged. Talk to me about what that said. The country heard hearings and direct evidence and context from experts. Talk to me where these numbers are today. What you are seeing is the division in this country of political and triablism, you have cable station thats dough vot devoted to creating their own facts. People who are following fox news or people who are getting their twitter feeds or facebook feeds that are oriented and factfree version for not getting the full truth unless you are watching every moment of the proceedings which most people are not. I was strucked watching the proceedings. Democrats were making their case based on the witness testimony and based on the documents that they did get and not from the white house but other sworn syst testimonies where you have republican members creating this fictional universe and thats whats happening in this country. If we did have the more of the facts available especially the documents of the white house has been holding onto, i think even the republican ks cover story could crumble. That does not mean the republican senators are going to vote for the removal of the president. It would increase the evidence thats available and thats exactly why the white house has been withholding it. Let me talk to you about a comment that caught my attention. It was former defense secretary jim mattis, he made a comment about political divisiveness in america. Lets listen together. When the election is over, it is time to roll up our sleeves and Work Together and we have forgotten governance takes unity. I amless concerned of foreign enemies than what we are doing to ourselves. How do you evaluate that . You have been a member of congress in a time that we were not as polarized as we are now but we are getting there. What do you make of what jim mattis said, hes concerned of foreign enemies than what we are doing ourselves. Do you agree with that . I do agree with the general. We have right now in this country is a president who ran on a platform of dividing the country, burning one american against another based on differences. Rather than bringing us together, unity and other candidates and even if they head way off in one direction during their campaigns, when they are elected, they try to bring one country together in unity. This president s pursuit is different model. He doubled down on division. That weaken us abroad. For example, we have a bipartisan consensus. Of the case we are talking about, the president of the United States trying to pressure the president of ukraine to essentially interfere in our election, first of all, by going after one of the political rivals and trying to pressure them to adopt Vladimir Putins line it was the ukraine and not russia interfered in our election. You have this situation we have not encould wantered before. You have fellow United States senator echoing that same line. Senator john kennedy been repeatedly despite the Intelligence Briefings that you get and despite the facts that you get thats not true. That there is no the head of the fbi said it, two days ago, we have no evidence that ukraine interfered in the 2016 election. We are not following any leads and investigating anyone about it. I dont know what else is supposed to happen. I am curious as to what we are supposed to do when you have fiction perpetrated by half the media of the country watches and half the senate you occupy . Thats exactly right. There is zero evidence of ukraine being the perpetrator interfering in our election. I dont know who came up with that language. The u. S. Plans to begin removing some tariffs on chinese goods while beijing would increase its american agriculture purchases. The u. S. Expects to delay a 15 tariffs on 156 billion in chinese imports. That was set to go into effect this sunday. This was the next stage of the trade war. The precise condition of the agreement are still being negotiated. The president tauted the new deal at the white house today. We have the china deal that was approved a while ago. It was a phase one deal but a lot of things covered. The farmers are going to have to buy a much larger tracker because it means a lot of business. We thought farmers are going to buy a lot of trackers. As you can see on the dow, it is percentage wise and entirely unchanged. Number one, it was based on bipartisan legislation. The antisemitism awareness act. That flew through the senate in 2016 and had bipartisan support in the house. Number two, it uses a working definition of antisemitism that was developed by scholars and experts that 20 other countries have adopted. Most importantly, it provides guidance, which does not mean that you cant criticize israel, which means you cant be tough on policies of the jewish state. But the challenge is, we need to acknowledge that sometimes there is, indeed, criticism of the jewish state that spills over into discrimination and harassment and, frankly, the freedom of expression is not the freedom to insight violence.
