War. We got new details on why the plans collapse. Americans across party lines support gun safety laws like expanded background checks. As Congress Returns from break. Will they actually take action . Well begin in the bahamas. As rescue missions are still underway. One week after Hurricane Dorian ravaged the island, 44 people have been killed. That number is expected to rise dramatically. As many are still missing. More than 70,000 people are homeless. Most deaths are in the abaco island. The great island of abaco is now becoming a ghost town as thousands are trying to evacuate by planes or boats. It is really heartbroken. My home collapsed. A lot of people died and i thought i was going to be one of them. We lost everything. The lord is still here with us. I am going to leave the island, home and there is no place like home. My partner ali velshi, one of the towns worst hit by the storm. Ali, tell us what it is like. Reporter i have done a lot of destruction as and storms an career. You can find better pictures, here at marsh harbour, you will see endless destruction, what you cant see is this. There are deaths all over the island. Cal perry was with me and we are driving up to an area called the mud. It is slum and you can smell there were bodies there and as he was there, two were pulled out. I was in the back of the pickup truck with a former navy seal who had a dog that came here to rescue people. They found three bodies. There is a fuel shortage on this island, it is hard to get fuel or find working vehicles. Let me get you a big picture here. I am at the port of marsh harbour, this was a ship that was caught up on surge and it got vehicles on it. There is disruption everywhere. There are buildings here that are built well for category four or five hurricanes. Category five hurricane for a long time over the island including winds up to 180 Miles Per Hour. While certain attachment to the roof, nothing else to the building. Every single house, everywhere you look, this is probably one of the better collections of standing houses that you can see in marsh island. Most of it looks more like this. It is apocalyptic. There are no leaves. These ones are up right. Everybodys tires are blown out and windows are blown out. We have seen cars pancaked on top of each other. We drove by an atm. There were two guys getting into a fight in front of it. Fire officials pulled out and one of them had a revolver in his hand. This is developing into that place where there is no food and money and there is no gasoline. Right at the port, there is a diesel ship thats pulled in, container ship that has diesel on it from fort lauderdale. There is a military container there thats giving out supplies to people. You can see, try to zoom in on those three or four containers there. Thats not how containers are stacked. This is 180 Miles Per Hour winds. Containers got caught up and plowed through the island. Containers were wrecking houses and containers shipping request stuff in this them. People live inside these things sometimes. They were flying around here and destroying everything. The destruction here is quite complete. Helicopters are constantly circling and expecting and finding out what to do. I want to talk to officer hunt medley whos in nassau right now. He over flown this area a little bit and he got a sense of destruction. I am on the ground and when i came in, i could not believe the destruction. When i got on the ground, i could not believe the destruction. Have you seen Something Like this before . I dont think i got hunter medley. We dont have him but well get him in a minute. Bohemian military has been flying over here. I am trying to get to the bottom of what the problem is with fuel because there seems to be, part of it many of the gas stations are destroyed. There may be fuel here thats not assessable. The primary thing that has to happen here is they need to get in and get fuel and cell towers have destroyed and communications are down for most of the islands. A ma many people were able to leave and trying to go to miami. A huge amount of people you said just left. Whoever thats left behind, is there roads to leave out of there or trying to stay in the short term, going back to work and rebuild or is it completely decimated, ie, maybe in a few years people will be back living. Reporter this is a few years thing. There are some people trying to stay but the difficulty is there is nothing working here. This is not a case of going to the home depot and gather people and rebuild your places. There is no fuel and there are no supplies and everything is broken. Then people can rebuild. There is nothing you can do. There is no activity on anybodys land here thats about rebuilding or even cleaning. The only activity going on here is search and rescue. The destruction is so colossal that they are finding bodies in rubble and the whole island is full of rubble. I am not asking you to give an official number on the death toll. Given how you just zridescribe things, those rescue officials pulling bodies and they would have pulled more if they were in a different situation. How much bigger do you think the number could get . Has anyone told you . Reporter let me tell you, we went over to the mud and half a mile out, you can smell death. Wh what does it mean . Reporter obvious piece of rubble. I have not experienced much in my life. I reported on a lot of stories but there are a few times in my life i have been around places where there is mass casualties. There is a smell in the area. It is hot weather here and people have been deceased have been in the condition for a few days och days. It is a smell like nothing else. Thats not from a body and it is numerous bodies. The the there are not enough dogs. I want to be wrong about this but this island smells like death. Ali velshi, thank you so much for being there. If you at home would like to contribute, if you want to help the people in the bahamas, there is a number, organization here of a few, you can donate to the red cross and the Salvation Army as they are delivering food and water and medical supplies to many, many people who need it. 70,000 people are homeless. We are learning more of what went on behind the scenes. A proposed taliban visit to camp david just days before the 18th answ anniversary of september 11th. President trump revealed the meeting in a series of tweets on saturday morning. The afghan president is set to come to the maryland retreat. According to the president , the meeting was called off when the taliban took credit for the blast. The blast killed 12 people including one american soldier. The remains, a sergeant first class, joining me now. Our bobby and kelly barron and courtney. Give us an idea behind the so p scenes of how this meeting came to be and got cancelled. About ten days on september 1st, there was a meeting in the situation room where theyre talking about National Security Council Officials talked about the idea of having a meeting with president ghani and President Trump, President Trump were told by a number of u. S. Administration officials he was the one who pushed the idea of having it at camp david. The officials told us he liked the idea of making it look like a summit. He likes the idea of bringing taliban leaders here to the United States on his own turf and he believed that once he did that, he could come to a break there of whatever these impasses were that were any kind of a peace deal. There were widespread disagreement with the idea of having the meeting at camp david including from the National Security adviser john bolton and the idea of having it there and from Vice President mike pence if ever of any kind of contradictory position from President Trump. We are told one of the arguments they made was what does it say to the u. S. Military members who have been fighting and seeing their friends wounded and killed by taliban members for the last 18 year in afghanistan. Most people would agree in order to end a war it is complicated and you have to sit down and work through it. Camp david, just a couple days before september 11th . I think we heard pompeo saying over the weekend, the answer was President Trump. Thats what he wanted. I dont care if it has to happen in camp david or before the 9 11 anniversary on purpose. All i care is what the u. S. Force is going to look like thats left behind of afghanistan and whats the commitment of this country will be to the security of that country. All of this we are talking about is what the u. S. Policy is for Global Security and National Security in afghanistan. So we heard it through the last week or so of going back to the last press conference. Keep down on terrorism but how many people that is and what the capabilities are is one thing and what the american support is another thing. You know i think it is messy and it is all going in the administration and nobody likes when trump decided to meet with kim jongun. He wanted to go to his turf and not do it on u. S. Turf. We are getting antonio the details of these diplomatic decisions and into play book that trump got into years ago. The tv opportunities that dont have actual impact. It is not big move, splashy operation that is huge but they dont have any results. We see it happening over and over again. This particular case was agr agregous. Kim jongun wanted to have the photo opportunity where he shook hands with the president of the United States. Legitimatizing his rules in the eyes of the world. Taliban dont care about that. In their eyes, they are the government of the afghanistan, they want to see the americans and they want to take over power quickly. There is no sign that the deal was anywhere close to being done. I agree with kevin. The timing is important here. President trump wants to get involved in the process before the deal or even the outline of the deal. Before the elected governme government it had signed off on this. That speaks to every time the president has done it, it has not led to the progress. The president is not alone. What would the path be . How would one actually get to a place that would end all of this . Well, the final end mean means when you bring it up to current sitting highest chief will be the first to say to you, the u. S. Still has troops in japan and suckorea and germany. The United States should not want to pull every single u. S. Troops out of the region. You have to have any kind of capability to insure your ally interests. Ending the war does look like a Peace Agreement and inquired in bringing fighters to political having a robust real peace effort is what, like i said earlier, the general said a week ago saying finding any way to break the status quo, that was his phrase is better than the way things have been. All right, kevin baron and courtney kube. Thank you. We got updates on the cargo members trapped inside off the coast of georgia. U. S. Coast guards just tweeted, all four members of the golden ray members where confirmed live. Co conditions are unknown. Response crews will drill a hole for new supplies. Welcome back to velshi ruhle, after a sixweek recess, a time period included multiple shootings, Congress Returns to a full plate today. One of those things is gun safety reforms. Abc new post shows background checks for all gun buyers. Just yesterday nancy pelosi and Chuck Schumer sent President Trump a letter urging him to expand gun laws. They point to all those shootings happening while congress was in rerecess. The American People are crying out to stop the epidemic of murder and mayhem thats shattering families and communities across the nation. A new poll out today shows four and ten americans polled trust that President Trump will do the right thing on gun policies. Joining me now, robin thomas. I guess you can start with that. The majority of americans dont agree on what doing the right thing is on gun control. The majority of americans do agree on doing the right thing on gun control in terms of the measures they support. These poll results were not surprising at all. We know 90 of americans support universal background checks and red flag laws or risk protector border laws. Whats interesting of the poll data that came out that we have seen more than 80 of republicans supporting both of those measures. It is not a small majority, it is a huge majority of americans that support these measures and yet the president and the senate who with being cowardly and hiding behind each other and the nra refused to take action something in a rare show of solidarity. The American People are asking for in demand. President trump changed his mind on background checks more than once. We saw Mitch Mcconnell last week basically say i am taking my cues from President Trump. That being the case, what do you expect from congress . You know i think congress, the house is going to continue pushing through additional hearings and measures. Theyre going to be talking about assault weapons and red flag laws and hate crimes in the coming weeks. As far as the senate goes, there is a huge amount of pressure on the senate to call this for a vote regardless of what the president is going to do. A lot of these folks are up for election next year, they need to get on the record and make america safer. If they dont, many of them are going to be held account ablacc. It is unclear whether what we are going to do right now, mcconnell is hiding behind the president and the president is hiding behind the nra. When the American People start to speak, the election comes closer, you will see the republicans are pushed in a position where they need to take some action. Is this another political battle of the letter that Chuck Schumer and nancy pelosi sent to the president . Do you think it is a real olive branch and one that the president can take, i dont mean ideal istically but realistically. He certainly comes out at times supports background checks and he backs away from the nra. Hes susceptible to some equations. Maybe one of these shootings or happening outs of the public and these polls convince him that the right thing for him to do is act on gun safety measures. I think it is unclear whether hell take that action but i think pelosi and schumer are really trying to continue keeping that pressure on so he does not let this issue fall away or think we are going to forget about whats happening out there. Putting pressure on the president does not seem to do anything . Does it repel the other direction . Thats a good question. Perhaps the only thing he cares about is corporate in interests and the gun lobby, that remains to be seen over the months to come. Certainly that was the case in the past. I dont think you can say for sure whats going to happen and perhaps as he face reelection next year, he realized it is in his best interest to take actions in this because huge majority of americans and republicans want. Does he care more about corporate interest and the nra or care more about being elected. He has to weigh that and my hope and our hope is that he continues to consider doing the right thing on this issue. It is hard to say majority when you are talking about 90 of the American People. It is unanimously of what the American People want from him and our elected leaders. Robin, thank you so much for joining us. From the day youre born we never stop taking care of you. I welcome back to velshi ruhle. I am in a place called marsh harbour. I dont know if you have seen more damage in this in one place certainly created by hurricanes. Looks like a lot of other places on the island and cars sitting around and trees toppled. This is somebodys house. There is Foundation Stones and stairs over there. There are peoples belongings and there is a boot and mattress all over. There is a cd collection. The problem is they cant get to cleaning it up yet because there are still bodies being recovered. Thats posing a really serious lodgist lodgistica lodgisticalproblem. You cant start to reconstruct things until you have gone through everything. There are piles of rubble, these houses around here are still standing. They are building codes in the bahamas is not bad. In many cases new construction has been built to tolerate a category four or five hurricane. Very little is built to manage a category five hurricane that stays for two days and winds of 180 Miles Per Hour. You can see examples here where buildings have gone down but everything about the building is gone. All the siding is gone and much of the roof is blown up. The four corners of the building and the foundation are still there helps with rebuilding. If you go half a mile, it is not even like that. There is nothing standing. It is just piles and piles of stuff. I want to turn around. Theyre dealing with a lot of problems in this place including emergency responders. And a fire appears to broken out across the bay here. You can see the black smoke over there. Thats happening as well. There is the military presence here but they need help. I want to bring in dennis, our team, veteran service organization, i get texts from team roubican but you are helping with this basic problem we got here and thats endless stuff and rubble preventing people from rescuing those who needs to be rescued. Thats correct. We have all emergency teams on the island and operators whos sending our steel volunteers who knows how to deal with this amount of defr station. Devastation. What is it that you are need of more of . Yes, we are in the fight to get to, medical services and make sure small cutoff communities to get attention. The concern is without infrastructure, you have the elderly and young people, people of all ages need some levels of assistance. They were vulnerable prior to the hurricane and now much worse. Thats the reality, a lot of people think of the bahamas, they think of nassau and freeport. A lot of people who were not able to get out before the storm and may have lived through it. The destruction in some of these places is close to absolute. I mean the Amazing Things for people that i talked to in marsh harbour, theme just want more information of whats going on and they want their family to know maybe theyre off the island and that they are safe. They dont want their families to worried about them. Thanks for the work you and team rubicon are doing across the island. Stephanie, dennis just mentioned of the big problem, i talked to a family from here, they live on a farm, the brother lives on hope island, they have no communications with them. I said what can we do to help . And he said tell our brother we are safe and i hope he can find out hes safe because they dont have cell phone communications. Keep in mind, water problems and cell phone problem and shortage of transportation and shortage of people and bodies still being pulled from the rubble. This is a disaster, stephanie. Ali, thank you so much. Well move on. The New California law could make it easier for consumers to view their data and actually hold corporations to be accountable. The privacy act is the latest push by legislatures to force transparency after years of high profile stories of leaks and misuse. The law is in response over out cry and what they hold of citizens. Joining me to discuss how all of this works, brad smith, hes the president of microsoft and coauthor of a book i highly recommend at a time like this. Tools and weapons. Brad, thank you for writing this. This is a complicated time. Thank you. That few of us everyon understand what we are dealing with and we spent countless hours giving away our information. The tech sector responsibility to people. Many companies derive their values from the data they collect from. Well, i think we have to start by recognizing that our goal is to serve our customers, protect their data and it is their data and not ours. We live at a time where technology is a tool and a weapon. Technology is being used by team rubicon in the bahamas to mobilize veterans. It is being used as a weapon to attack our democracy. It puts issues like privacy at stake. One of the stories we share is how they came together. They came together because Real Estate Developer got enough signatures to put privacy on the ballot and what it shows. If you let people decide theyll stand up to protect their rights. Here is the thing. That developer got enough people to sign it and ended up on the ballot. You know whats bigger and more powerful than that . The lobbying efforts of corporate america. I am not saying personally, i am not saying microsoft, you and i both know that Monster Companies that make monster amounts of money spent enormous amounts of lobbying dollars in washington. Beyond simply lets get something on a ballot to protect mom and dad. Most moms and dads have no idea whats going on here. Well, i think in the sense thats what moved me to write this book. The only antidote is to empower people and make it assessable to people. I do believer there is a number of people trying to do the right thing. I went to washington, d. C. In 2005. 14 years later, we still dont have it. Why not . I think there is a long period of time where we were excited of the promise of technology that we didnt really address head on of the challenges that it created oc. T now a new decade is emerging. People are listening to all the candidates and the president ial race. People rightly are focused on a new generation of challenges whether it is security or privacy or bringing broad band into the community that dont have it. In order to achieve what you call digital diplomacy or digital geneva convention, how do we do that . It is one of the points we take on head on in the book. We have to remind ourselves after world war ii, the government of the world came together in a geneva convention. Now we are seeing government attacking civilians in a time of peace. We detail in the book of the efforts that come together. Last year in paris, government and companies and nonprofits came together. 67 government have now signed whats called the paris call for Cyber Security and it is important building blocks. Our whole government is not necessarily part of it. It is a worldwide movement. The United States landed the home of the free and the land of the brave. We are in a moment where the American People deemed regulation is the only answer and theyre not necessarily realizing that good regulation and smart regulation is meant to protect people and not all regulation. Thats the argument we make. We do need government to move faster. If you look at the history of technology. There is so much we can learn from the past. We need to take cautionary tale including the 1930s. Technology was racing ahead, governments were turning in ward. That entirely unlike the challenges we face today. The world is paying a huge price. We got to learn from the past. Sometimes history does not repeat itself but there are certain rhymes that we do not want to listen to it again. We need to be inspired by the challenges we need to avoid. You can make a data privacy pledge. You are a company that make product revenues. There are a Monster Company out there that relies on this free data, thats how they make the money. Do you agree some of these companies out there, social media Type Companies are going to get on board with this . I believe there is hope. Why do you think that . First of all, you have to per sway people looking at the longterm. In the short run, a company can make more money bile disregarding the privacy of customers. You got to sustain trust. Brad, we are living in an absolute world of short termism. We suffer short termitermism a. I live in the present. The fundamental question is what kind of world do we want to liver in. If we all just embrace the challenges and giver up then thats not an opportunity to pursue a better path forward. We acknowledge readily, we have to be realistic. My gosh, we need people in colliding people in business and including people who make technology who are prepared to look beyond these challenges and do what it takes to do what i think most people want to see happen. Amen to that. Brad, thank you for writing this and what you are doing. Brad smith, i recommend this book, tools and weapons of the digital age, it is out tomorrow. Moving on. Welcome back to velshi ruhle, acting commissioner just told the press conference at the white house, he feels the question of everything from the response of everything. Our halie jackson joins me now. Halie, you were in briefing. What did you learn . Reporter the commissioner came out to speak with members in the Briefing Room which was not used these days to tout the numbers of border apprehension by his agency in the month of august. The big headlines from the commissioner that numbers are down. He sees it as they are down dramatically. The numbers went from 82,000 to 64,000 over the period of a month or two. Typically there is a seasonal drop this time of the year. Commissioner morgan pointed out this drop is more substantially than what they seen in the past. Their work in partnership, and other issues. Emphasized that there are still monarch wo more work to be done and steps that seem to be with you, you can say what the briefing was. Commissioner to come out and to tell lawmakers and frankly to show his boss that hes telling lawmakers that hes trying to get something done when it come to immigration reform. It comes to no surprise that commissioner morgan defended the Administration Many controversial immigration policies despite questions from those into do with those suffer the humanitarian crisis in the bahamas after Hurricane Dorian and specifically whether people, baumians a i bahamasians going to be able to come into the United States. There was a bit of confusion. Reporter i want to clarify something you said to one of my colleagues here who asked about tps status being granted to bahamia bahamians . Are you talking about expedited there havent been any formal grant of tps. Have you had that conversation with trump . Not yet. Reporter do you think you will . History shows weve done that before, right . So if history shows its taken a lengthy time to get the bahamas back to where these people can return to, im sure its a discussion well be having. Reporter the commissioner went on to say whether or not people have the proper travel documents, they will be allowed to attempt to enter, and he said the laws will still apply, who is allowed safe entry and who is not. There was a report, as you may have seen, about people on a ferry trying to get out of the bahamas, being denied entry into the us baus th u. S. Because t didnt have their papers. They were blaming this on the ferry company. And the commissioner was saying were trying to get them to somewhere safe in the United States if we can be helpful to them. This week marks the dubious distinction of six months without an actual briefing from the White House Press secretary, though its good to see the room getting any use at all. Thank you so much. Forbes executive published this list with 100 most innovative leaders with only one woman making the cut. Responding to the criticism about their process, lane wrote this, our methodology was flawed at a minimum when it came to who was being more expansive with who was able to be ranked. I wanted to get your reaction from this list. Theres nothing original about this list of largely white males once again. That was my of first reaction. You know, it really boils down to this myth that decisions boil down to some kind of objective system, in this case a scientific methodology when thats not really what happens. I know that people sit in rooms and design algorithms, and sit in rooms and decide methodologies. The request we have to ask ourselves as leaders is who is in the room and what difference will it make . In this case i can tell you the right people were not in the room, certainly not a Diverse Group of people in the room when they decided what meth toodologo use. How disappointing is it for you to hear them say we now have to delve into this problem. Theyve been delving into this problem for years. When the rubber hits the road and they actually make big lists like this, nom woment womens l not diversity lists but lists, and theres not even a woman as a decisionmaker, doesnt that devalue womens groups and turn them into the pink ghetto . Absolutely it does. As soon as you saw who was on your list and you a tsaw the methodology. Theres a quote that says those who would judge us by the heights we have achieved would do well to consider the depths from which we started.
