It would be naive to think while i iran is under such pressure with b52s in the region and talks of war and regime change that iran would not be eventualities. Its not to say they want a war, but theyre sending a message out saying they are ready. And it seems doubtful that iran would want to strike u. S. Assets in this current climate. There would be very little upside for the iranians if they were to do that. Is there any hope for window that President Trump will get iran back to the negotiating table . What has sparked this, it seems, frustration, desperation, tied to the economic sanctions. Thats right, stephanie. That doesnt seem to be any signs in tehran right now that theyre willing to talk to President Trump. It would be a gift from tehran right now, if they spoke to President Trump. From the very top leaders in iran, the Supreme LeaderAyatollah Khomeini to more moderate figures like the foreign minister sharif who negotiated the deal saying were not going to talk to trump. Their strategy in tehran right now seems to be wait and exist. They want to weather the storm. Theyre willing to take a battering on the economy and see what happens in elections in america the next time. The Supreme Leader of iran just said negotiating with americas would poisonous. Negotiating with the Trump Administration would be like a double dose of poison. So, i dont think theyre in any mood to talk to trump today. And especially from a position of somewhat weakness. I think President Trumps strategy has somewhat back fired. He thought that putting iran under immense pressure, sanctioning the country, designating the revolutionary guard as a foreign terrorist organization, battering their economy would have one of two results. Either there would be a mass uprising in iran that would overthrow the regime. Or iran would feel so weak that they would capitulate and come around to the negotiating table. And they would include making sweeping changes to the Legal Immigration if passed and thats no easy feat because it has a number of parts resigned to republicans that avoids key issues like Asylum Seekers at the southern border and status of dreamers. Heres what the plan would do, it would screen immigrants to a meritbased system. The proposal is centered around, quote, build america visa. And it would add more requirements for those seeking entry into the United States. Things like Health Screening and passing a civics test. Joining us is jake could be soboro soboroff. Lets talk to whats in there. Ive spoken to sources close to Jared Kushner and this is his baby. And they say this is going to be President Trumps big pivot. To get democrats on board, maybe it will sweeten the deal with the dreamers option at the end and prove that republicans actually want to do something. Do you see it that way . The way i see this, this is the plan that would basically effectuate what President Trump has said he doesnt want immigrants coming from shole countries while a meritbased system might seem like a soft proposal that contributes to the economy, the name is a nice one, build america visa, this would be a radical structuring of who is allowed in the United States of america and what the face of immigrants in the United States looks like. Lets put up on the screen quickly what the merits of an immigration based system would look like. Age, english proficiency, and employment hist and level of education there there we go right there. It does exist our neighbor to the north, canada. If you go to canada, obviously, north america as well. Proportionately, theres 1 15th the number of latinos in canada. And it seems like this is not a controversial policy. But activists in the Immigration Community call meritbased immigration systems racist. Number of immigrants entering the United States based on family connections are about to be cut in half. That is the main reason immigrants come to the United States in the first place. Right now, the number stands at about 66 . But under the president s plan that number will be slashed to 33 . How is that going to be implemented . Well, more deterrents at the southern border, frankly, which is part of the reason i find this so puzzling. They are doubling down on a strategy that they know has failed. They want to turn back people that they come here to reunite with their families, coming here to seek asylum. In the plan it calls for building more walls. It calls for turning around undocumented migrants from Central America the minute 93 set foot on the soil. And it calls for expansion of family detention. Those are all things meant to deter people. They want to shift the burden to the meritbased system. But i cannot underscore enough. It is not as altruistic as it seems on paper. Hows it going to play politically, clearly if not meritbased, the next stop for Jared Kushner and his team is the ceos that push back against the president s policies. This somewhat solves their issue in bringing highskilled workers and from President Trumps base who says theyre not getting their basic needs met. Are they going to be on board with this . Well, if this is something that tech ceos are on board with why arent they standing up there today and why arent we seeing people out there today. Im not saying they will or wont. But the president hasnt ruled out yet. Right, but youd imagine that Jared Kushner would want to build the support of this coming up. Theyd certainly want to educate reporters ahead of this plan. I thought kind of puzzling if this is so advantageous to members of the Tech Community, you dont see members of the Tech Community out there. Maybe theyll be in the rose garden. Fresh off the heels of alabama adopting the nations most restrictive abortion bill, another state is cracking down on abortion rights. Missouri senate has passed a bill that would outlaw almost all abortions at eight weeks of pregnancy. The legislation would also allow cases of exception in cases of medical emergency, but not in cases of rape or incest. It needs to go through the house for approval. Missouri becomes the seventh state to pass the law. Along with alabama, ohio, utah, mississippi, and georgia. Joining us correspondent pete williams. Pete, good to see you. Tell us more about the missouri legislation and how it compares to what weve been paying a lot of attention to in alabama. I think the way you described is right on the money. Its less restrictive to alabama which is a flatout ban on abortion. This is eight weeks but theyre both intended to do the same thing which to get the Supreme Court to overturn roe v. Wade. Whether thats going to happen, of course, is an entirely different question. Answer that question, we know ultimately, weve heard this in alabama, thats the goal to march up to the steps of the Supreme Court. Do you think theyre going to get there . You know, i think thats exactly the right metaphor. Thats what the sponsors of these bills think is going to happen, that these bills will get to the Supreme Court. And thats not necessarily true. There seems to be an air of inevitability with the laws. They may get to the Supreme Court and they may not. And there are a couple reasons for that. Number one, the most often cited reason that the Supreme Court gets to take a case. For the Supreme Court, you get two bites at the apple. The laws are challenged in the District Court and then go to the court of appeals. After that, you have to ask the Supreme Court to take your case. And the number one case is if there is a split among the circuits. But the precedent is so well established that the District Courts and the Supreme Court, too, will have to strike the bills down. And there wont be a split among the circuits. And the second is, they are such a blunt instrument inviting the court to overturn roe v. Wade, and the justices will stick with what is current plan, at least what is happening currently, is that the court is billing to entertain state laws that would narrow access to abortion, rather than outside right appeal it. So, just hitting, you know, the Supreme Court with this question so quickly after Brett Kavanaugh came on the bench may not be the right strategy. All im simply trying to say is im not saying it wont work. Im just saying that this feeling of the sponsors of ho hooray, we get to go to the Supreme Court. Pete, thank you so much. Today, five states, west virginia, iowa, kansas, maryland and wisconsin are all simultaneously suing the opioid manufacturer and its former ceo richard sackman. The suits allege the Company Unlawfully marketed oxycontin and helped pull the epidemic. These, just the latest in a series of lawsuits brought against Purdue Pharma in the last months. Now, the metropolitan museum of art is turning down money from the sacklers. The met is not the first to make this move. Other notable museums turni ing down sackler donations are the american museum, smithsonian and tait galleo tate galleries its ana i say his name wrong every time. So whats the problem, i know the problem with the sacklers and Purdue Pharma and the opioids. Everybody is mad at them and there seems to be good reason. They, of course, denied wrongdoing in most cases. Whats wrong with taking the money of rich people if they do things that you dont like . Theres broughtly two ways to take the money of rich money, as you put it, one is phil lontpan. And the other is taxation. And it was said in davos, for us, its a lot better. They get to decide how the money is spent. They are smart people and they get to run foundations that are more effective in government. Thats what they say. But the case for actually taking the money like the sacklers through taxation, if their case is could be assets procedure. But the case for doing it through taxation, actually you and i and everybody else watching it gets a vote on how to solve our biggest shared problems using these resources. And in this case, what is so remarkable. We talk about a rigged system. Now, youve had that word on the show. How many times in the last years. Donald trump talked about a rigged system. People on the left talk about a rigged system. I think something that people dont necessarily appreciate it. People in washington, corporations, rich people, people get that. I think something people dont realize in america is nonprofits are very a very crucial part of how the rigged system gets rigged. And heres why. The people who are rigging it have a reputation problem. They understand that. Right . If you look at internal emails that come out through investigations and different things. Theres an understanding that, hey, we caused a financial crisis. No one is going to like us. Its going to create a problem. We were involved in the Opioid Crisis. Thats a big problem for us. Whether or not we admit to guilt. Nonprofits, arts and institutions, food pantries, anything that we know, become great places when youve made a couple billion, maybe harming society, great places to drop a couple million for your reputation. And the nonprofits what is happening and the met is just one example. The nonprofits are starting to understand their societal role in a broader way. Not just working in their little area, taking a donation and buying six paintings. Theyre beginning to understand that theyre enablers for them to continue harming society as the new York Attorney general said in a significant statement. Okay, but onces reputation is subjective. I could say ali velshi is an awful person. But i could think hes an awful person but if i run a hospital, ill take this money. I understand that. Thats why im trying to overturn the conventional wisdom. Yes, the conventional wisdom, why not take the 5 million. Heres the thing. The 5 million may change the consequences. On the opioid stage, i think it did have these consequences. All of these years of donating. Journalists, were all ten years late. Most journalists who feel they should have covered this story early didnt and feel bad about it. Why dont we say, yep, ill take the 5 million, but i dont want your name on it. Hold on. The other part is the government often doesnt go after people criminally or otherwise. They sort of have a general iced glow. Were all busy. When you think of sackler, arts family, it may crowd out the arts family. Correct. Weve got a lot going on. It may be that 5 million, yes, it helps you your opera or buy more paintings its not just about art and like your opera thing, right . What if we want this money for homeless shelters. Sure. Ill take the money. You know why we have as much homesness as we do . Because people are allowed to make billions of dollars, knowingly addicting people. Do you know the effect of that addiction. Its awful. Absolutely awful. Send them to jail. Correct. But then when you allow the spoils of harming people to be spent gaining a reputation of being their saie saviors. And nonprofits in america are they realize when you run a Little Program for girls who code. But meanwhile, youre taking money from people who actually didnt, you know, deal with russian meddling in our election. And may have helped tip an election in a very misogynistic election. Sure, you helped thousands of girls to code, wonderful but you contributed to that. Were starting to realize that a lot of people in america are actually fighting on both sides of the war. And one of the things thats actually great thats happening to nonprofits, the arts institutions are at the leading edge. But i hear this, i go around and talk to a lot of these groups. There has been a feeling in nonprofit groups you that dont talk about how donors make their money. You dont talk about tax evasion. You dont talk about Tech Companies driving up costs in san francisco. You see nonprofits struggle with do we take somebody off our bill. Sure. Thats my point. And they only do that, by the way, when its really an extreme thing. I think the deeper question is if a donor is causing by operational daylight the problem they are then coming to you to involve by philanthropic moonlight, whats your role . Are you kind of enabling a moral racketeering . Listen, we have to go. We had to go three minutes ago. Just one second. Im not the boss. If youd like to go for another minute, christina will have to live with that. If im the director of a nonprofiter and im calling you the big donor, listen, we have to sacrifice. And your Immediate Response is do you know how much money ive given you . And then your money becomes more important than doing the right thing. Correct. I think it has changed. I will tell you there are a lot of younger people in the nonprofits who think differently than the leadership class. They feel that the zeal thdeal worked for for decades do you pay your taxes . Yes. In particular, theres an important moral question to end with. If your money has spent harming communities it kind of becomes like a stolen painting, money. So then im giving it to your art museum. It may be that there are moms out there who lost their kids to Opioid Crisis who have a better moral claim to that money. If you see a painting at a museum, you cant just give it to your friend. In that case, who actually deserves money that was made knowingly harming people . Its a very important question for us to grapple with.
