One. Trying for an overthrow and we caught them, we caught them. Far left radicals in Congress Want to take away your voice, your jobs, your rights and they especially want to take away your guns. Maria butina will be sentenced after pleading guilty to conspiring against the u. S. As a russian agent. What the government says, she was an access agent. She was trying to influence americas particularly through the National Rifle association. Theres an american creed, its about decency and honor. Weve not led merely by the example of our powers, the power of example. Its about moving to the future. Its not about recreating what we did. Its about taking the same decency and the philosophy and taking it into the future. Theres so much we can do. I have to be much more aware of the private space of men and women. Its not just women, but primarily women. I invaded your space. And im sorry this happened. But im not sorry in the sense that i think i did anything that was intentionally designed to do anything wrong or be inappropriate. The gdp numbers were Just Announced and they were far higher than even the high expectations. Look, its a blowout number and ill just say that President Trumps policies are rebuilding the economy. We have good Economic Growth which is going to help reduce the budget deficit and the debt outstanding. Weve been spending too much. Businesses are going back to invest. They are shifting now to a huge capital expansion and that means better technology, better equipment, modernization and the workforce is coming out of the woodwork, back in, so they will be counted and the Unemployment Rate will probably continue to fall. Our economy is doing great. All right. Today is quite a day for the National Rifle association. It is a tale of two stories. First theres President Trump who is wrapping up a keynote address at the convention. And then theres maria butina who was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison this morning for trying to infiltrate the nra to influence the 2016 president ial election. The nra played a massive role in President Trumps victory. But the largest Gun Rights Organization has found itself mired in tough scrutiny weighed down by a series of finance lawsuits and now its losing money. The organization reported a total income drop of 55 million back in 2017 but still the nras influence cannot be understated. Its huge. Its an old organization. It wasnt founded to do what it does now. It was founded in 1871 on the premise of defending the Second Amendment. It has more than 5 million members to this day. And it spends a whole lot of money on political support. Lets not forget, back in 2016, it donated more than 30 million to the Trump Campaign before all of the reports of the nras struggles. The nra has reduced spending on gun session, safety and training to less than 10 of their budget. I think there are a lot of people in the nra who say thats not the core mission, defending the Second Amendment is the core mission. Mike sprees say the organization has increased its spending on messaging, its now mainly a Media Company prompting loving guns. Nra tv, the programming network, does exactly that. Nra tv spokesperson has repeated encouraged violence against gun opposers, and mainstream journalisted deserve to be curb stumped. Can you think about that for a moment. Mock mocked survivors of the parkland shooting. The president said, were going to do something. The next day, suddenly, mum is the word. John harwood. We say they have huge financial troubles troubles but is that actually impacting the influence the nra has over politics . I think the set of controversies that theyre facing and the shooting epidemic is having an influence on their ability to communicate their message. Theyve become a political arm of the Republican Party. So its not just the Second Amendment, its advancing the interest of republican politicians and the additional ailment is the selfdealing that is described in this new yorker story. People sometimes say political movements have a life cycle and they start as a movement and they end up as a racket. Theres a lot of money flowing to a pr firm and spouses of people getting money. Thats what the nra is. Interests groups on either side are all in with their side beyond the interests of simply the issues that they started with. Nra tv is not a part of the nra, its part of the pr firm that the nra pays and the firm has oliver north whos the head of the nra. The whole thing is a bit of a mess. The right hand paying the the left hand. How much influence the nra has about its membership, they say about its 5 million people, versus the fact that that its a lobby for the gun industry. They get a lot of their money from the gun industry. No question. And thats where i talk about movement becomes a racket. This is about the financial interests of the gun industry and the political interests of the Republican Party. And if you look at the things that they say in their messaging, their nra tv, theyre crazy. Theyre way over the top the way they describe you know, as our country has become more politically polarized i remember a time when george h. W. Bush who had been a lifelong member of the nra resigned after they referred to government agents as jack booted thugs. Thats the kind of over the top stuff that has left the nra kind of like President Trump isolated with an intensely loyal base that is getting smaller. And its no accident that when russians wanted to get to the Republican Party and get to donald trump, part of the way they did that was to use the nra. Lets talk taxes for a moment. Mark owens of the irs says theres a tremendous range of what happens to be the misuse of assets for the benefit of certain vendors and people in control. Those facts, if confirmed, could lead to the revocation of the nras tax exempt status without with the organization could likely not survive. Why is the nra tax exempt to begin with . They bill themselves as a Nonprofit Organization thats trying to advance interests of a set of people. Less than 10 of their total budget goes to educating people. This is the part but they spend a lot of their money on media messaging as mike points out. I will say that deserves tax exempt status . They are in their opinion theyre defending a constitutional right. Thats fair. Right. Well, again, thats where you get into the issue of selfdealing and whether theyre actually fulfilling that objective. Or whether people are getting rich off of it. I would be surprised if the irs under a Trump Administration revoked that status. If a democratic gets elected in 2020, it could happen. Good to see you. Turning now to another problem for the nra. Russian National Maria butina has now officially been sentenced to 18 months in federal prison and will be sent back to russia when she gets out. She acted as a Foreign Agent and plotted to infiltrate the nra and other american political organizations during the 2016 president ial election. Heres a reminder of who maria butina is. Shes a 30yearold gun rights activist who came to the United States in 2016 on a student visa. According to prosecutors, she served as a special assistant to a top russian official thought to to be aleksandr torshin. Testifies sanctioned by the Treasury Department in april of last year. According to a plea agreement, she worked with torhsin and american boyfriend. I think thats the guy who took her to the styx concert. Her goal was to promote russianfriendly policies on behalf of the kremlin by establishing unofficial lines of communication with americans having power and influence over u. S. Politics. At a las vegas event in july 2015, butina, again, she said, im a student, she then asked thencandidate trump not about guns. About sanctions on russia while she was in the audience of a big event. He called on her. Im visiting from russia. Good friend of obama. If you would be elected as a president , what would be your foreign politics in the relationships with my country and do you want to continue the politics of sanctions that damage the economy or you have any other ideas . I believe i would get along very nicely with putin, okay . And i am we have the strength. I dont think youd need the sanctions. All right. She just happened to be there. And he happened to call on her. In december of 2015, she helped arrange a moscow trip to meet with senior officials. She met with donald trump jr. According to the New York Times, she unsuccessfully proposed a meeting between thencandidate donald trump and, you guessed it, vladimir putin. She arranged for a group of russians to attend the National Prayer breakfast telling her boyfriend they hope to establish a back channel of communication. This story is wild. She said she was just a student. According to the plea deal, she befriended a conservative writer who helped pay butinas bills identified by the times as george oneil jr. He hosted friendship dinners, giving her the chance to meet individuals will political capital, learn their thoughts, and inclinations toward russia and adjust her pitch accordingly. Joining us now ken da lainin. She was just sentenced, i guess they didnt buy that she was just a student. Take us to the courtroom. Reporter what was surprising about this sentence it was everything the prosecution asked for, the maximum, 18 months. The guidelines called for two years, but he got some benefit for fully cooperating. It was a total victory for the prosecution and the judge completely endorsed the prosecutions view of the case that this was a threat to u. S. National security. And the reason thats significant, the defense put forward a claim and an argument and it was adopted in some media cases that she was an idealistic young student who forgot to fill out a form and regulate as an agent of russia. She pleaded guilty, and they asked for no time at all. The judge completely rejected that argument and said, this is a significant matter, this was her actions were dangerous to u. S. National security. And the government in making that case presented an affidavit from the former head of fbi Counter Intelligence who looked at what butina did and said this is a classic russian spot and assess. She wasnt a supplpy, but she w part of a the behavior described by the federal government is exactly what we saw in terms of the russians reaching out to the Trump Campaign both before the election and then after the election. Its the same script, the same playbook. And the judge took note of that saying her conduct at a time when the russians are trying to interfere in american politics. The judge throws the book at butina. She will get credit for time served. Shell serve another nine months and then she will be deported back to russia. Thank you for your reporting on that. I love that word nothing burger. I had never heard it until about a year ago. Its a handy word. I wonder if they serve them in prison. The xfinity store is here. And its simple, easy, awesome. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. Live in washington, d. C. According to the latest polls, joe biden enters the campaign for president as the clear frontrunner but his staying power raises many questions. A short time ago, the former Vice President appeared on the view where he spoke about several things. We begin with honoring the memory of his son beau. Is he why youre running . No. It sounds stupid. When i get up in the morning, i think about i hope hes proud of me. I hope hes proud. Look, its about moving to the future. Its not about recreating what we did. Its about taking the same decency and the philosophy that we have, the political philosophy, and taking it into the future. Theres so much we can do. My, lord. Let me ask you this, youve also been criticized about your interactions with women. Heres the deal, i have to be and everybody has been much more aware of the private space of men and women. They have also said, we would like an apology. Well, look, im really sorry if they what i did in talking to them, trying to console, that in fact they took it a different way. And its my responsibility to make sure that i bend over backwards to try to understand how not to do that. Welcome the view apology tour. You reached out to anita hill and you expressed regret to her about the way you behaved back in 1991 when you were on the senate committee. I said privately what i said publicly. Im sorry she was treated the way she was treated. I wish we could have figured out a better way to get this thing done. I did everything in my power to do what i thought was within the rules to be able to stop things. All right, joining us now, the New York Times correspondent who spoke with anita hill about her phone call with joe biden. And msnbc contributor and correspondent for pbs news hour. Welcome to both of you. Joe biden did apologize and you spoke to anita hill and she said thats not enough. Lets put it in a bigger sense. Anita hill has said its not enough for her. And a lot of people in the Democratic Party are saying maybe his sensibility isnt current and we need someone else. If you take us to a general election, if you put joe biden against President Trump, joe biden has actually apologized. He has said i wish i did something different. We need to be better going forward. The republicans are eating this up saying democrats are going to kill him for it. This is a disaster. But pound for pound, President Trump versus joe biden in term of morality and getting better, its clear that joe biden has done a lot more and is trying to do more, will that matter . I think youll see joe biden emphasize what he has done, for instance, shepherding the violence against women act, he created an organization, its on us, to deal with victims of Sexual Harassment and assault to help them. That said, i think the anita hill issue is going to percolate and as we have seen over the last day or so, it is resonating, it is something thats on womens minds, women and many men are still angry at the way she was treated at the hands of an all white, all male Senate Judiciary committee. And she was very clear with me that she would like there to be an apology to woman who were not called to testify and to the public who she says expected a process of integrity and she also would like to hear biden say that he will take a leadership role on issues of gender, violence, and Sexual Harassment. Did she have anything to say about the way Christine Blasey ford was treated . She did. She draw a direct line between the two hearings. She said she felt that mr. Biden, who was then chairman of the Senate Judiciary committee set the stage in a way for the kavanaugh hearings by failing to come up with a process and a that there is still no process in place for these kinds of things. According to sheryl, what anita hill was talking about was not that in her opinion joe biden is ir redeemable or do the right things, but so far that hasnt happened. And you see hes going to get these questions over and over again, and it doesnt seem youd think hed thought about that. Is there a way he can figure out an answer thats going to let him get past this and talk about his aspirations and what he wanlts to do with the country. Its tough to say. I think joe biden for a segment of the population, including a critical segment of the party, black women, are going to look at him and say you had this chance to elevate women of color to give her a real hearing and where women who were ready to back her could be heard and you didnt do that. And joe biden said i apologize that i couldnt give her the hearings she deserved. He could have gone a little bit farther and said, i should have called the other women. Instead he said they expressed some feeling as though they might be not wanting to testify. And of course anita hill told sheryl that she didnt see any evidence of that. So i think going forward, joe biden is going to have to continue to reckon with this. I will say political campaigns are about personality and emotion, and this is something that joe biden has been able to tap into. You saw him on the view talking about his son. That was an emotional moment showing himself as a father. I also think when you look at his announcement video and you look at the charlottesville and putting that front and center in your campaign his another way to tap into an emotion that the country is feeling and telling me i understand what youre feeling and i want to do something about this. Joe biden has apologized. Does the Democratic Party hold themselves to a higher standard than republicans . President trump has been accused of harassment by a number of women and hes flatout denied it. In some cases, he said they werent good looking enough for him to harass. Do democrats hold themselves to a different standard . Thats the key question of this entire campaign is President Trump going to be able to go with a standard and have a standard thats different than what the democrats are going to hold themselves to. You have in President Trump someone whos been accused of Sexual Harassment, you have the access Hollywood Tape out there, but those things have been litigated, the access Hollywood Tape and all of those things we knew about his interactions with women, were things we learned before the 2016 campaign. So the president has been able to navigate this. On the democratic side, people are going to be looking at joe biden and say, does he understand what what people felt when he touched them the wrong way. Even though President Trump might be accused of something worse than joe biden, something might have a harder time getting through his primary because of people dont want to forgive or things that people say we cant really have a standard that looks like donald trump, we have to be better than donald trump. Thats a key problem for democrats in this race. Joe biden will have a harder time getting through his primary. But if he makes it to the general, i dont know how republicans could touch him for this. Kellyanne conway thats a good point. Kellyanne conway had said this has been litigated. This morning matt sha lap said, i wouldnt let one of my five daughters have an office near him, except he lets his wife work for somebody this is joe bidens problem in the primary, maybe not in the election. I think thats right. If joe biden wins the democratic nomination, you will see democrats get behind him because the overriding interest among democrats is to beat donald trump. And many feel that biden is in fact the best candidate to do that despite this kind of baggage. And it was difficult to get other democrats to talk to us about anita hill because they are concerned that they dont want to or they didnt want to undermine the candidate who could be in the best position to defeat donald trump who they regard as extremely vulnerable on womens issues. And the answer to your questions about do democrats hold themselves to a higher standard. My answer is yes. Look at al franken. They gave him the boot as soon as those allegations emerged, his own, you know, colleagues in the senate, female colleagues turned on him. And he was done. Thats a good point. And kristen giuliallibrand face some questions about that. How do these 16 candidates face off against one another in the next few months. President trump wants them to pick one another off and do his bidding for him. Thanks to both of you. Thanks for your reporting. Next a huge surprise for our economy today. Where we got new video which appears to shown a cell phone being thrown at President Trump. Were going to show it again. I got to tell you, theres a phone in there. Whoever threw it at the president has bad aim. Or good aim since i didnt hit the president. It happened as President Trump was being introduced to give his nra speech. We dont know who threw the phone or what their goal was. 2019, one thinks twice about throwing their phone. I wouldnt throw a phone. Glad i didnt hit the president. We dont know if it was aimed at the president in the first place. Nbc has reached out to the secret service. We have not got anything back. But we have other big news. Surprise. Yeah, surprise, new figures out today that were expected show higher than expected of Economic Growth. Gross domestic product grew at 3. 2 in the first three months of this year, compare today the previous three months. U. S. Gdp growth Beat Estimates by more than half a percentage point. And this is quite good news. Amid this good news, Top White House officials are said to be pushing for an early deal to raise the National Debt limit ahead of an expected crisis point this fall. The u. S. Hit its current debt ceiling of 22 trillion in march, after congress suspended the ceiling for one year. Since last month, the Treasury Department has been forced to take extraordinary measures to move money around to meet the governments obligations without borrowing more funds to do so. Unless lawmakers come up with a new deal to reach the debt limit, they could run out of money by september right when a budget battle is expected and threaten another government shutdown. How much time we get waisted on talking about the debt limit in this country. That said, we have john harwood with us spending is not stupid, though. Not paying your bills is stupid, right . You could spend less, but not paying for what you spent is stupid, right . Lets start with gdp, it looks like people are spending a lot of money. Were not often here with john, theres a lot of criticism why dont we stop talking about him and bring him in. Put john on the camera, the president carries on about fake news and nobody talks about the economy. We talk about the economy all the time. And all three of us have said that this quarter gdp growth is good. Great. Very strong, very surprising. Just a few months ago or weeks ago, even, people thinking the growth was going to be in the ones, then it was in the mid twos and this is over three. There are a couple of factors for that, one is business inventory is rising, the other is change in exports. Jason ferman who served under president obama said this is consistent with a slowing economy, and it looks like hes upping his estimate to 2. 4 , thats slower than 2018, but its better than people thought a while ago. Thats positive. Theres a fed meeting next week. How can the president continue to push for the fed to cut rates which is what hes looking for when things are doing this well . He can push for and say whatever he wants, but theyre not going to cut rates after a 3. 2 quarter. Theyre in a pause mode. If we continue above trend and above expectation through the end of the year, you could get a rate increase by the end of the year, but maybe they cruise through the end of 2019 and deal with it in 2020. You were making a point and debt and debt ceilings. We are not going to have a debt crisis. The democrats want to keep a bright line between how they governor a govern and how republicans do. Nancy pelosi is not going to push that to the end, i do believe it will be will be combined and spending will increase both for defense and for could that have affected g. . We saw a big kick up in defense spending. Yes. It would be positive for gdp, no question. And the reason why youre going to get that deal is that republicans want spending to go up too. The president doesnt. But republicans dont share those priorities. They want defense to go up. They want some domestic to go up. But theyre going to find a way to meet in the middle on that. The beat goes on that was great welcome back to velshi ruhle live in washington, d. C. Facebook is facing another investigation, this time in new york, this comes is from the new York Attorney general. This comes after facebooks admission last week that the social media unintentionally up loaded 1. 5 million user email contacts without their permission or knowledge. New York Attorney general made the announcement this morning tweeting that her office is investigating the unauthorized collection of personal information, writing this, facebook has repeatedly demonstrated a lack of respect for Consumer Information while at the same time profiting from mining that very data. Adding in a second tweet, the total number of people whos information was improperly obtained may be hundreds of millions. Joining us now is Washington Post tech reporter and contributor, tony rohm. On one hand, facebook continues to mishandle our information, that is its own problem. On the other hand, none of us get compensated for it. They trade in our data. And were getting away from what probably should be the compact that we have for people who use our data. Its another black eye for the company and the attorney general is right that we could be talking about hundreds of millions of users who had their data compromised which then used that to hone its ad targeting system. But this isnt the only investigation that we saw announced targeting facebook this week. Irish regulators said they would look into an instant in which hundreds of millions of user had their passwords misused. A onetime payment, even if its 5 million or 10 million, they can pay that in a heartbeat. Its nothing. True regulation or being forced to break up, thats a black eye to the company. This is exactly what folks are saying this week. Facebook said it was going to set billions of dollars aside with another investigation which is exploring facebooks privacy practices. The commission is considering other penalties on facebook that would target mark zuckerberg. Those are the sort of structural remedies would deal with your point which is doing more than just the stuff that the europeans want to do, the stuff that Scott Callaway writes about or Elizabeth Warren talks about, none of that is within the preview of the fcc today. They dont have the teeth to do the stuff that some people think really needs to be done. Theres no National Consumer privacy law in the United States. Theres nothing that says that facebook has to handle data in the way in which they would like to see facebook handle data. Are these Government Agencies in the Trump Administration or whatever may come after the administration, willing to go after a company like facebook or google. We have to note, the last administration was extremely friendly to those companies. It was friendly to those companies and remember facebook was able to gobble up Companies Like whatsapp and instagram. Folks are wondering if that should have happened in the first place. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. I didnt do it. Thats what President Trump said this morning disputing a key finding in the Mueller Report and just this afternoon he went after the special counsel again in a speech at the nra convention. Every day of my administration we are taking power out of washington, d. C. And returning it to the American People where it belongs. And you see it now better than ever with all of the resignations of bad apples, theyre bad apples. They tried for a coup, didnt work out so well. [ applause ] and i didnt need a gun for that one. But this morning fbi director that President Trump chose had this to say about other key findings in the other key findi the Mueller Report. The use of social media, fake news, propaganda, false personas, et cetera, to spin us up, pit us against each other and discord and undermine americas faith in democracy. That is not just an election cycle threat, that is a 365 days a year threat. Joining us now former Deputy Assistant attorney general at the department of justice, Elliot Williams and nbc news. Christopher wray, kirstjen nielsen, take your pick. One of the first lines in the Mueller Report. The russian interference yet the president , while he did say he was totally exonerated continues to now go after Robert Mueller and, you know, oh, Nothing Happened here and Jared Kushner two days ago a couple facebook ads. A lot of willful blindness that we from the president and the threat that russia poses and regardless of whether you agree with what was found in the Mueller Report, its clear that foreign actors continue to infiltrate our elections and clear to some extent theyre successful. We cant dispute that. Now whether no obstruction or collusion or what youre going to draw from the findings, thats up to the people to decide. Its clear that is what they we were doing. The president s move to take action against russia and push Everything Else aside. Thats the magic move. Wouldnt that be the best move . Yeah, this is hyperpolitical right now. So, what were seeing is the Mueller Report has come out and stopped short of accusing trump of conspiracy. Thats with the russians. In 2016. And then it stopped short of making any conclusions on obstruction, even though mueller left a trail of bread crumbes to the conclusion that trump committed the crime and cant be accused right now because he is the sitting president. Wouldnt get a fair way. Leaving open the possibility once hes no longer president , future prosecutors can look at this evidence and decide whether to charge him then. Trump is reducing that to no collusion, no conspiracy and trying to change the subject back to or to why did this investigation get started in the first place . This whole thing was a hoax because there was the flawed steele dossier and fisa abuse by the fbi. I think we will have more information coming out in the coming weeks about the early days of that investigation. We have this Inspector General report coming out and any new details about trying to understand what will happen in 2016 will go along the offense and say this whole thing was just a set up. The more you start using this language of coups and deep states set on undermining the president of the United States, the more you undermine peoples very faith in government and law enforcement. He is successful. Works for him. This is long before mueller. This preidates the last year or two. The president has built a presidency on attacking the institutions and rule of law. He might get himself charged with obstruction of justice. An interesting issue here one that charlie has britawritten a about. The president wants to diminish everybodys power to the gain of his own. That has been something that president s have done and americans have started to sort of believe it and so has congress in many ways. Now, in the last week, this crush of weight on congress to say, this isnt about whether its politically expedeiate for you to go through with the process of impeachment, it is something you are supposed to look in to. A huge push among liberals to do something about trump. Now the democrats have the house of representatives and, obviously, one possibility would be to bring impeachment hearings with the recognition, though, that republican senators will never remove him. So, in the end, it would be a swing at the king and a miss, which might only strengthen his ha hand. Nancy pelosi has been trying to channel those energies into vigorous oversight investigations of the executive branch by the six house committees and trump is now saying i will stonewall all of those. Subpoena to no where. It will be interesting.
