Concerning. And just a real human being and we would use the word menche. People are all part of the community, part of that fabric of what the community is. The people that were there saturday morning were doing what they do and that was worshipping in their safe space and that is what is so horrific about what happened to rose and cecil and david and the rest of our friends. Taken into my hospital and shouting i want to kill all the jews. Whats really tough is you see these events happening all over the country and the world and we dont know if its going to happen. We want the know when its going to happen. We turn to the leaders of our country. Weve got to stop hate and cant be just to say. We need to stop hate. We need to do. We need to act. Oftentimes after these Mass Shootings we get caught up in the whys and the howes of what happened and right now for this second, for this moment, lets focus on the ones who lost their lives. Joyce fienberg was 75, a mother of two sons. A researcher at the university of pittsburgh described as, quote, magnificent, generous and a caring human being. Dr. Richard gottfried was a dentist. They celebrated a 38th anniversary and planning to retire soon and passed out toothbrushes instead of candy for halloween. Rose mallinger was 97 years old and barely missed a service in decades. She was called full of life. Her daughter is recovering. Jerry rabinowitz lost his life trying to help others at the synagogue. When he heard the shots, he ran outside to see when anyone was hurt and then gunned down. He was one of the few doctors to take time to listen, understand and empathize even when he was busy. David and Cecil Rosenthal were attending the synagogues since they were boy. When the synagogue held services, the two brothers served as honor ary helpers. Daniel stein, his 1yearold grandson was the love of his life. He was killed in the same room where his grandsons ceremony was held this year. Melvin wax was 88 years old. He was leading services for new life congregation when he was killed. A family spokesperson said he was always available for a conversation or to tell a joke. He was a really bad joke teller. But he loved it. Most people are really bad joke tellers. Irving younger, 69, was a regular greeter at saturday services. A former tree of life president said he wouldnt be surprised if the first thought was can i help this stranger . Finally, bernice and sylvan simon, mid80s, married. They died in the same place they were married. More than 60 years ago. A wedding announce. Shows they married in 1956 in a candlelit ceremony there saying she wore a gown, a neighbor remembers them as sweet, kind couple who always held hands. Joining us now, jeffrey solomon, an old friend of mine. A former tree of life congregant who knew several of the victims. Jeff, thank you so much. You grew up in Squirrel Hill. You had your bar mitsvah there. Yeah. On saturday morning, your mother called you. Your daughter called you. Walk us through the last few days and the people who you knew who lost their lives. You were in pittsburgh last night. Yeah. Your regularly scheduled programming is disrupted and find yourselves in places you couldnt imagine. Having coffee on saturday morning i couldnt have imagined that, you know, last night i would be in the city of pittsburgh at a wonderful interfaith vigil celebrating the lives of these wonderful people and this is disruptive at the core. When somebody comes into your home and takes the lives of those you know and family members you know, its really hard to process. So, you know, i think ill say on the flip side, though, the outpouring of love and affection of all corners of the globe to all of us, myself and my family, and everyone from pittsburgh, pittsburgh is a special place. A lot of us live in the what i call the pittsburgh diaspora. Right . Because, you know, what we carry with us, a tremendous sense of pride and responsibility. We celebrate together. We mourn together. We pick each other up and last night being in the vigil, it was very special. Listening to the leaders of our city. And the leaders of all faiths, people of all colors and religions getting together to condemn this. And to celebrate the lives of those lost. It was very touching so in a moment like this we mourn but i choose to look at the joy and the amazing outpouring of as you were po of support and i know this cannot overcome the amount of good that the world can do. Thank goodness for perspectives on life like yours. Tell us about the two brothers, cecil and david rosenthal. You have known them for a long time. I mean if if you had to describe good, you would see this picture. They were there every saturday. Cecil at the back. He would be the one to hand you a prayer book and tell you what page to go to. Even if you hadnt seen them in years. Like i didnt see them all the time anymore but, you know, he would pick up on conversations we were having from years before. We share family. His father and my aunt are brother and sister so we all have the same First Cousins and so we would share our stories about them. Thats my relationship with cecil and david. You have to understand. Cecil and david had a relationship with everybody in Squirrel Hill. Thats what people keep telling us. It is remarkable. They were unofficial ambassadors. You know, we talk today about inclusion and special needs and we now know what that means. I just want to tell you that when we grew up, cecil and david were different but they were part of the community. Yeah. And thats just who we are in Squirrel Hill. You know . Squirrel hill is a massively Inclusive Community where you see a mixture of people there for generations and people that just got to this country and it is amazingly open and it doesnt judge. And im not making it sound i di idyllic. People say hello to you and greet you. Even if they dont know who you are. Cecil and david were a part of that community. In fact, they helped to shape that community in their own way and so when i look at this act, i believe this is a very deliberate by an individual who knew who he was doing. I dont think for a second that he didnt know that. Because everybody in pittsburgh know what is kind of a community Squirrel Hill is. Its not a secret. It is the place that really in many respects, you know, you want to be and i just welcoming to every community. And so, you know, it hurts. You know . And its hard not to take it personal but at the same time i think it represents communities all over the city and all over the country and all over the world that are like Squirrel Hill and so when Andrea Mitchell says we have it within ourselves, this is this is what Squirrel Hill represents. Then how does Squirrel Hill move on from this . You talk about last nights extraordinary vigil. You talk about a Community Coming together. And whether youre talking about cecil and david who lost their life or rose mallinger, the oldest victim who you described as synagogue royalty, what do people do next . Because this heinous act of hatd and violence did take place in the spiritual home. So, if youre jewish, you know all the names of the places where these things have happened. Youre taught it can happen to you at any time and you like to think thats in the history books. Its not. Our synagogue, our shoal, our Community Joins the list of other communities that have faced similar acts of violence throughout the ages, not just in this country. But i choose to think about it differently and i think the people of pittsburgh and the people in Squirrel Hill and the people of the tree of life will ultimately choose to think it differently when were done mourning. And that is, that what this community has done for us, it has taught us what good is and then go off in the world and do good because thats what were taught. Because thats what we know. You know, so when people ask me what can i do to help . My response is to honor the memories of those by doing acts of which in hebrew means repair the world. This is what we have been taught since we were young and we go off and we do it every day just the same way we breathe and drink and eat. Because its whats supposed to happen. In communities like Squirrel Hill, we will make sure that the memory of our childhood, the memory of our community, is not tarnished by this act. In fact, well use it as a way to inspire the world to do acts of great kindness as a way to combat evil and thats what i would say. Thats the only thing we can do. And then the weeks to come, well mourn the loss of the individuals and not lose that perspective. I dont know if its the only thing you can do but the best thing you can do. Thats strong. Right . To be able to two days after a shooting in your hometown, in your synagogue, be able to look at the world that way and if people did that, were going to be in a better world. Thanks very much. Jeff solomon, friend of a number of the victims and grew up in that area. Thanks again, jeff. Pittsburghs Squirrel Hill neighborhood was the real life neighborhood of guess who. Mr. Rogers. The tree of life synagogue was just three blocks from his home and heres what mr. Rogers said about how to deal with things like this. My mother used to say, a long time ago, whenever there would be any really catastrophe that was in the movies or on the air, she would say, always look for the helpers. There will always be helpers. You know . Even just on the sidelines. Thats why i think that if news programs could make a conscious effort of showing rescue teams, of showing who medical people. Anybody who is coming in to it, a place where theres a tragedy, to be to be sure that they include that. Because if you look for the helpers youll know that theres hope. I found my tresiba® reason. The man who police say is responsible for the pittsburgh synagogue massacre is due in court in just 15 minutes. Federal prosecutors have charged 46yearold Robert Bowers with 29 criminal offenses and seeking approval for the Death Penalty. 11 people total were killed. Well bring you any developments as soon as they come. Lets talk about antisemitism, a hostility toward or prejudice against people of the jewish faith. Its something we associate really with the 1930s and 40s, an antiquated and not prevalent movement in our modern world but thats not actually the case. The fbis hate crime report show that is attacks against jewish people have been increasing since 2014. Right . This is all reported hate crimes. The part in gray is those hate crimes against jewish people. This is more than half of all hate crimes in the last year. The Antidefamation League found incidents of harass. And vandalism increased by 57 between 2016 and 2017. Reaching nearly 2,000 events last year and the problem increasing on College Campuses. Where the adl saw an 89 increase in antisemitic incidents. 2017, the same year that neonazis, white nationalists walked through the streets of charlottesvilles and a big point for them is the holocaust. Many attempt to minimize or deny that it actually occurred. And according to a study this year by the claims conference, a group that works with the German Government to advocate on behalf of survivors and families of victims of the holocaust, nearly a third of americans believe that 2 million or fewer jews were killed in the holocaust. 11 said they were unaware or unsure about the most deadly genocide of the 20th century. In reality, the number of jews killed in the holocaust upward of 6 million. Joining us now, Jonathan Greenblatt. Jonathan, welcome back. I feel like thats a weird thing to say at a time like this. We spoke earlier today. Help us understand for people in the Jewish Community, to alis point, we often think this is something that jews have not had to face for decades but thats not the case. It is a reality and two days ago we were reminded of just how real it is. Thats right. I mean, i think antisemitism is a prevalent part of the human condition of thousands of years. Theres a reason why its called the oldest hatred. Jews lived as a minority in various countries around the world literally for 2,500 years. Here in the United States, its fair to say that the Jewish Community lives with tremendous privilege. It wasnt always this way. When the adl was founded, it was au around the time of leo frank lynched in the south. He was found guilty and what amounted to a sham trial of killing a young girl. When the governor intervened in that landmark case and clearly not due process, commuted the sentence from the Death Penalty to life imprison. The mob so enraged they tore leo frank from the jail cell and they hung him from a tree. And as often happened with lynchings in the south, they barbecued, they took pictures and sold the postcards as souvenirs. The adl founded literally in that moment and we have been fighting ever since. You go back to those times. Looking at the late 20s and early 30s in germany, the jews said were in great positions in government, in universities, in the arts. There were lawyers, musicians and somehow they were motivated against. Right . Hitler created an otherness about jews. Is this about ignorance or hatred . My grandfather was one of those jews. My grandfathers a survivor from germany. My great grandfather served in the First World War and if you asked my grandfather as a young man to ever imagine that his grandsons, me, and my brothers and cousins, would be born in this country, he would have scoffed at you. They were german. That was all they knew. Right. And so, what we need to know is scapegoating and stereotyping is consequences and rhetoric creates the unseen or unimaginable consequences. So i think we need to take this kind of rhetoric very sereiousl and not stand silent in the face of hate. Why is it on the rise . We were talking about College Campuses and in my mind thats where the leaders of tomorrow are. All the information in the world exists there. The faces of optimism, facts are aplenty on a college campus. Why is antisemitism on the rise in colleges . Antisemitism is a multidimensional phenomenon and it is about a hatred of the jewish people. You can deny the rights you would afford to other people. 19yearolds suddenly feel this . What misinformation is making the way down to them that they would push these ideas forward . Try to understand that the kind of right wing extremist phenomenon for this gentleman, im not going to dignify him by mentioning his name, it was the white supremacist ilk. Thinking that jews are sub human. We see in colleges criticism of all jews. Where you will say not about jews, you say jews are fine. Its just the jewish state that i think is illegitimate, i think is alien, i think is colonialist, kills babies, i think commits genocide. And so, you know, look. I think we need to take all of this deadly seriously. I think we need to acknowledge that people in positions of authority, whether its the president of the United States or the president of a university, need to call out antisemitism immediately when it happens. I want to read you a poem that youre very familiar with by pastor martin. Saying first came for the socialists and i didnt speak out. Then they came for the trade unionists. Then the jews and i did not speak out because i was not a jew. And then they came for me and there was no one left to speak for me. Whether youre jewish or not, you have to take all of these hatreds very seriously because allowing them to pass lets the racists win, lets those who are prejudice win. I couldnt agree more. The adl, we are on the front lines of fighting antisemitism and and other forms of hate. Islamophobia is your and my problem and thats why antisemitism isnt just my problem and yours. And everyone in the audience. What makes America Great is what it does for all of us. Thats what makes this country special. What do we do about the conflation of hate speech . We believe in freedom of speech. Sure. But then theres a fine line saying if you silent some speech you support freedom of speech. Thats this drain that we keep circling. At the adl we are fierce advocates for the First Amendment and all the privilege, freedom of religion and assembly and speech. Freedom of speech isnt freedom to slander people. Freedom of expression isnt the freedom to incite violence. Who decides where that line is . Look. In the public you have to look at it on a case by case basis. I believe people should say ugly, uncomfortable things. When you threaten people based on the way they pray or where theyre from or who they love, thats where we at the adl absolutely draw a line. So let me give you an example. Charlottesville. Do they have a right to march and rally . Absolutely. Is it a good idea to rally right through the center of town past the synagogue with torches and chant turn it down . No. Is it a good idea to be able to march in, you know, in close contact with the counter protesters while carrying things that could be used as weapons . No. Should they have the right to march with guns at their holsters . You know, exposed guns . No. But in their mind if they didnt march in that way, no one would notice, no one would care. Look. I think i deeply believe in the freedom of speech and the safety of others. What about the fact there is a man running for congress in illinois right now who is an avowed racist neonazi. He is running as republican. They werent running a candidate. Allowed him to run. Heres the deal. We have actually nine avowed White Supremacists who are running for office in this election cycle. The gentleman running for the republican nomination and lost for paul ryans seat in wisconsin, the gentleman in illinois, someone for senate in california and i could go on. This is not normal. This is not america. And so, of course, everyone has the right to run for office. But the institutions of democracy should be such that they inoculate us from this intolerance. I ask you, is this america . Thats a bigger question than i know how to answer. Ill tell you as a muslim, antisemitism is my problem. Its all of our problems. As a human, it is all of our problems. Jonathan, thank you for the work you do. National director of the adl. Next, just eight days away from the historic midterm elections and this terror in our country is why we vote. Nbc News National Political Correspondent Steve Kornacki joins us live. Steve, we have to reset with you. Give us a picture of whats going on right now. I think the single biggest variable is this is a midterm election. It is going to be a referendum in a lot of ways. This is what the polls tell us. On the president. On donald trump. And one of the stories we have been seeing here, thats the wrong thing. Lets pull it up. One of the stories here is Donald Trumps Approval Rating in the month of october had been going up. Again, this is all relative. The average Approval Rating if you just checked in at the start of the week, 44. 4 on average. Now, look. Thats not great by any historical standard but given where trump has been, this is at the high end of the range for his entire presidency. And republicans had felt the way the house map looked to get him into the mid40s that might give them a fighting chance to keep the house. Now, i have to tell you, just in the last hour, gallup which does a weekly poll on the president s job Approval Rating, they have given us the latest weekly number and he is coming in at 40 . That is a 4point drop in gallup just from last week and it raises the question, given the head lines for the president involved in for the last couple of days, the controversy over handled the crises in this country, if that Approval Rating does drop, if what we just saw in gallup now plays out in several other polls in this number, this average approval number dropped back down, that could make a very big difference just in terms of the prospects of republicans keeping the house and on the other side, the prospect of democrats taking the house and a big wave on their part. All right. Well watch it closely. Steve, thank you. Thanks. Next, new details on our top story. You know what it is. The synagogue massacre that took place over the weekend. The alleged shooter in the deadly attack on a pittsburgh synagogue posted the vile views on social media from the man who did the shooting but not a service you likely heard of before. Gab. Com founded in 2016 by a man named andrew torba, a programmer that felt that the social Media Companies were censoring conservative voices. A post announcing the launch claimed that free speech and free thought are under attack blaming Political Correctness as, quote, cancer on discourse and culture. Gab attracted altright figure who is are banned from twitter for harass. People like conspiracy theorists alex jones, former breitbart writer, andrew and richard spencer. Along with people like the alleged shooter who harbor extremist views. After the shooting, the platform suspended the shooters account saying they condemn all acts of terrorism and violence. But the site is now offline. It was dropped by several key services over the weekend including its domain registrar go daddy and stripe and paypal which facilitate payments from pro membership users. But it promises to return. Leveling charges of smear and censorship. Lets dig into this more. Joining us, reporter ben collins and former fbi special agent with the joint Terrorism Task force clint watt and specialize in hate speech and thing that is go on on the internet. Ben, is there anything this assassin wrote or posted on gab that would have gotten him in trouble with facebook or twitter . Most things. He said im going in. Right . It was after days of posting antisemitic nonsense. Specifically one Conspiracy Theory he had tied everything, every right wing talking point into an antisemettic thing and took a picture of a van in the Migrant Caravan that hear about on fox news saying where does this come from . Where is this money coming from . Like, why are we implying that jews bringing the caravan or something . Most important part is people saying antitrump because he didnt take action on violent action on a lot of talking points he talked about so like he thought that this was an invasion by some sort of jewish backed group coming through the Mexican Border saying we cant stand for this anymore. Clint, wheres Law Enforcement here . Yeah. So this actually becomes harder in some ways when the mainstream platforms, we saw this in international counterterrorism, as well. You push them off the large platforms and will look and connected now. Theyre now going to reconnect somewhere on a darker platform either one closed like Internet Forum thats hard to see or theyre going do go to gab and let anything go and you have anonymity, encryption and evade Law Enforcement. Its human intelligence and how do you develop sources and assets and ways to go into the groups and see whats going on. Thats the opposite of the way people traditionally think in terms of technical monitoring. My question maybe is to you then. Then why would go daddy, right, a public company, a company that loads of people invest in, why would they ever support a platte form like that . Why would stripe . Ben, this is a good question. Youre in and out of these sites all the time. They dont exist without some mainstream support. Whether its companies that take the payments or host the domains. The public face of this is especially from andrew torba the ceo of gab is a place for all speech. But really, and they court this on the twitter account saying if youve been banned from the platforms, come here. But if youve been banned from these platforms it is for a reason. You up to something. Thats exactly right. You can see this because you see the platforms like this one, got up to i think 800,000 users in a couple of years and growing that quickly why are people going there . Is there a could be a certain feature. Think of snapchat. Its unique and young people went there. Why do you go to these platforms . Because you can say things what you want. You can maybe hide who you are. Maybe connect with other people that think like you and key figures and laid out four key people there of the altright movement telling the followers to go to the platform. If you see those four individuals say everybody show up at gab, you better i would as a company want to know from my brand protection, hey, these four guys who are a key divisive figures have now all said go to this platform. Is it being hosted on my servers . A piece of me says maybe they shouldnt be banned because we can figure out who they are. This is not about regulating social media but are there not a combination of algorithms and saying the bomber of last week or this shooter, has a history of posting things that are hateful, potentially dangerous and then it triggers some conversation like im going in or whatever the case in. Shouldnt in 2018, should we be able to determine that and say, huh oh, something bads going to happen . For extremely groups, for a decade now, we watch the extremist groups pulled off and say go to the following application and we just go there. You have to be looking at what theyre doing. And then move to that area and try to figure out whats going on. So now that the site has lost whats known as its registrar and hosting service, what happens next . I mean, to me next time theres an Earnings Call for any of these big platforms, i want to know if wall street analysts are asking theyre going to come back somewhere . They will and can. Who will finance it . Thats a better question. Clint probably knows better. Theres a couple ways to look at this. Im looking. If you have heard some of the conversations, steve bannon, for example, said, hey, we need to nationalize the social media to drive them to apps they close and move them to closed platforms to control the discussion and let the discussions i dont know what that means. Saying its the not uncommon place. Whatever interest it is. Saying get deeper into the echo chamber . People move out off the mainstream platforms and to have a conservative or a liberal app or an extremist or a counter extremist app or whatever it might be, whatever your ideology is, move to that place and have a discussion away from the Administrative State and monitoring. This isnt a group of people who drive camaros. Theyre not Interest Groups and clubs. You do as you said drive them further and fourth sbeer turthe echo chamber. The diasparo is harder to control. You dont know what theyre up to and on facebook its much harder for people to be that radical. You should go shoot up a synagogue. In a small message board and they are. Theres another we believe site of discord and its hidden. You can just say that stuff because nobodys monitoring it. Its again in a catch22 here. Do you want to catch these people and make sure theyre not radicalized and then you have to have a larger platform. The key is to recruit in the open in the future through key mouthpieces and direct them to the closed forrums to saturate them with whatever the ideology is but you harden their bubble and only getting information that you agree with, youre blocking out anything about a caravan or whatever it might be and harden the views of the ideology. You have to treat it like extremism and just because its on the internet doesnt mean its any less. Any less harmful and dangerous and i think thats the thing we are learning. Thanks to both of you. Appreciate it. Extremism has many, many faces. You have the acknowledge that. Im a little scared after that conversation. I mean, i would like to be hopeful. I was an early adopter of social media. This is great. We can get the views. Dialogues terrific. Everybody will correct you. I was a little bit wrong. Ali, maybe the answer is we have to love more because if you believe that everyones starting off good we need to get the people out of the echo chambers and out of the halls of misinformation because Everyone Wants to lead their best lives. Providing shelters, meals and transportation to the refugees coming into manhattan. In 1980, hias was a voluntary agency for the office of refugee settle. The government refers cases to hias and working with others to resettle refugees in america. And the 2000s, the group expanded the work to nonjewish refugees and those from afghanistan, bosnia, haiti and iran and vietnam and involved in immigration causes around the world with International Offices in 12 different countries. Thats the group that this guy was rantding about. Joining us is matt hatfield, president and ceo of hias. Mark, you found out about the massacre at a bar mitsvah service on saturday. You had no idea why your phone was businessinzzing. Tell us what your organization is doing. How youre reacting. Well, were all in a state of shock. We had a first allstar meeting. It was very strange going to work today. We represent asylum seekers, resettled refugees in new york city and in the washington, d. C. Area. And we went into work and theres just a line of new York City Police officers outside of our building. We have an armed guard now. Outside of our office. Its a different world. It is horrifying. It is our job to provide a welcoming, comforting environment to people and now to make them feel safe we have to have armed guards and policemen outside of our office. The suspect posted several times about your organization. Do you think its because its a Jewish Organization . Or, because you bring refugees . You help resettle refugees in the country. Im glad you asked that because he was very clear that he hated jews. He was going in there to get jews. But he hated jews because we were helping refugees. Right. And its important to note that people dont generally just hate one group. Haters hate many groups. And when i hear the response, for example, from the white house to this massacre they keep talking about antisemitism which is totally one major focus. Thats why he went into the synagogue because he perceived as helping refugees and immigrants. We have to stand up to all hate speech. Not just one kind of it. But all kinds of hate speech. We had Jonathan Greenblatt from the adl making that point that antisemitism is everybodys problem. Because people who hate will spread their hate. And that to me seems like a bigger issue. The fact that we have this shooter in pittsburgh. We have this man mailing bombs in florida. Is a massive thing to be concerned about. But in the last few weeks we hear so much about this caravan coming from central america. The president has said over and over that the caravan includes gang members and some very bad people. I know you are working, our organization is working with some in the caravan can you give us an accurate description of whats really going on there . Yeah. These are people who are fleeing the violence in the northern triangle of central america. I mean, it is very clear. Its a mixed flow maybe. Mabel not everybody is in need of protection but theyre all seeking either a better life or protection from gang violence, from failed states, from sexual and gender based violence. You know . Theyre seeking protection. Theyre not coming here to terrorize us. Refugees flee terror. They dont bring terror. And this is a the vilify case of refugees is simply promoting a myth and confusing refugees with the terror from which they flee. Yeah. Theyre the ones who hate it more than we do because its ruined their lives. Mark, thank you very much. Mark hetfield, president and ceo of hias. Thank you. Breaking news.
