Little bit. But as to whether or not we should stop 110 billion from being spent in this country, knowing they have 4 or 5 alternatives, that would not be acceptable to me. What he is really thinking is they give me a lot of money. With jared and trump its an open door. If youre spending with us, you can do anything with impunity. If in fact this was true that he was abducted and killed at the direction of the saudi government, it will destroy the relationship as we know it. I would do everything i could to punish the saudi regime if they did, in fact, kill this man. Stocks are roaring back this morning after two days of stomach turning plunges. More than 1300 points on did dow. I think the fundamentals are still very strong. The u. S. Economy is strong. U. S. Earnings are strong. I see it as a natural correction after the markets were up a lot. When stocks are overvalued, it is like a toddler on top of a dresser. You want do get the toddler down without the toddler falling down and right now what we are seeing is the toddler is kind of climbing down. Now the president s complaining that the feds raising rates and touting a very Strong Economy at the same time so theres a lot of cognitive dis d disnance there. How often does he have a toddler on the dresser . How did the toddler get on top of the dresserment. Its all weird. Speculation is growing about the fate of journalist khashoggi as walking in to the saudi consulate in istanbul. The columns for the Washington Post were a sometimes biting critique of the saudi government and especially the crown prince. Quote, saudi arabia wasnt always this repressive. Now, its unbearable. Saudi arabias crown prince wants to crush extremists. But hes punishing the wrong people. Saudi arabias crown prince is acting like putin. Saudi arabia is creating a total mess in lebanon. Saudi arabias crown prince already controlled the nations media. Now hes squeezing it even further. And heres another. Saudi arabias crown prince must restore dignity to his country by ending yemens cruel war. Those are just a few of the things hes written. Believe it or not, that doesnt put him in the ranks of most critical people of saudi arabia. He wrote what saudi arabia can learn from black panther this spring. The article ended asking, will Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman who likely will soon become king of his country use his power to bring peace to the world around him . Now the columns are gone after the final image of him walking into the saudi consulate. The final the Washington Post bearing his name that was this blank page where his column would have appeared. Well take a quick look into saudi arabias record on human rights and press freedoms. Please pay close attention to this because this is a boiled down look and important. Lets start with womens rights. The crown prince made a showing of allowing some women to drive. Women can attend sports events, both hailed at victories, and paralyzed person to wiggle the toes. It is a start. Not all that much. Women are still held under male guardianship where a male, husband or father, approves school enrollment, chaperons her aboard, checking with the male guardian work outside the home and controls an ability to open a bank account or sign a lease. The testimony is less than a mans in courts and can be listening for n arrested for not listening to the guardian. People can be arrested for vague, undefined crimes. Because theres largely no penal code. The country relies on sharia and a blogger sentenced to 1,000 lashes for a website advocating free speech in the country and others sentenced to prison for protesting and working with International Human rights organizations. The kingdom also holds close ties to wahhabism thats considered ultra conservative and forms the underpinning of the ideology of isis. Isis. 9 11 victims long tried to sue the saudi government for alleged knowledge or involvement on the attacks. Allegations the saudis deny and the United States did not allow to happen. This is probably where the rubber hits the road right now. The u. S. saudi relationship. It is a feedback loop. Turn up the volume for this. All right. So the issue is, the United States sells the kingdom of saudi Arabia Defense products. The United States buys oil in return. Just last year the Trump Administration signed a billiondollar deal to sell missiles to the saudis. The United States over the time has imported an average of 810,000 barrels of oil per day this year. Current prices, those imports worth more than 10 billion to saudi arabia. Thats the stunning thing, ali. Saudi arabia, the crown prince, the royal family, behave not necessarily like this about this specific journalist every day. But the atrocities were talking about are commonplace. You see that business relationship . Thats why. All money. Were okay with it. Both countries make a lot off of each other and not critical of saudi arabia and of many other countries that do these things. Joining us is robin wright of the Woodrow Wilson center known Jamal Khashoggi for years. Robin, a turkish official tells nbc news that turkey is now 100 certain khashoggi is dead. You say the last time you spoke with him back in august he was worried about his life. What did he tell you . Yes. He actually talked about the fact that the saudis wanted him out of the picture as he put it. He was very concerned for his life, and weve been talking about this for more than a year and i thought he was exaggerating the dangers since he had been in washington in exile for quite a while and it seemed that, you know, that was a less vulnerable place to be compared with the kind of arrests we have seen across saudi arabia. And of course, he proved to be right and i think in ways even he didnt understand. Robin, you have been covering the middle east for a very long time. Jamal khashoggi doesnt rank amongst the biggest critics of saudi arabia. His criticism was i might even say measured. He sort of thought of himself as a force for good in saudi arabia. Why him . Well, first of all, i think youre right you were a reluctant dissident and continued the support the monarchy, support the house of saud as its known and critical of this particular group of leaders because of their autocratic ways inside the country dealing with the sweeping arrests or you remember the ritz carlton arrests where they picked up several, dozens of does men, even princes. But it was also the reckless foreign policy. This was the invasion of yemen which is an openended war and called saudi arabias vietnam. The forced resignation by saudi arabia on Saudi Television of the lebanese prime minister. The tensions with one of its closest neighbors. Little qatar. Over and over saudi arabia was taking actions that jamal was very concerned about. And by speaking out, he in many ways humiliated the crown prince in a moment that he was trying to consolidate power. Father is aged and ailing. The king. And theres widespread speculation of some kind of transition of power in the not too distant future. And so jamal being in the west was in the face of the opposition and someone that obviously the kingdom felt was in some ways a threat to them. Tragically. Erroneously. The kingdom specifically mbs and jamal was writing in the United States. Mbs is very keen to have americans, specifically influential americans, Business People here, think highly of him. Right. He bragged about his investments in this country. I want you to take a listen, please. Americas a sovereign nation. And our First Priority is always the safety and security of our citizens. To the best of our knowledge khashoggi is not a United States citizen. We are not here to lecture. It is not our country. It is in turkey. Not a citizen as i understand it. We are not here to tell other people how to live. Saudi arabia i get along great with all of them. Instead we are here to offer partnership. They buy apartments from me. Based on shared interest and values. To pursue a Better Future for all of us. Am i supposed to dislike them . I like them very much. Lets make something clear. The crown prince mbs has Major Investments here. And theres the president over and over saying how great that is. How difficult is it right now that the white house has had a pretty blurred response to this situation given how the president has spoken about them before . And it took a week for the president and the white house, state department to make any kind of statement questioning the fate of jamal and what role the kingdom might have had it. The reality is that the administration really depends on saudi arabia, particularly mbs, as the interlokator on the foreign policy, as you point out to arms sales and to the counterterrorism strategy. Remember that saudi arabia was a First Destination of President Trump when he became president among much pomp and ceremony. And the kingdom in turn under mbs has this vision of developing saudi arabia that will depend on billions, hundreds of billions of dollars from Foreign Investors and theres a big conference next week, in fact, in which is going pulling together whether its technology, industry, media, organizations to try to get give them the stamp of legitimacy as well as the investment he so badly needs so theres a relationship thats interdependent. Not just foreign policy. Could be trump or kushner business ties. Jared kushner met privately with mbs. A long time. Overnight with him. Good to see you. Thank you so much. A writer with new yorker. And has known Jamal Khashoggi for some years. Thinking about him. Next, a wild week in global markets. Well look at why wall street took such a sudden turn, many warning of a correction or a downward move to a bear market. Well see. Maybe its volatility and we needed. The dows up. 6 of a point. Well be right back. Youre watching velshi ruhle. All right. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. All eyes on your money, money, money and the u. S. Markets as stocks i want to say rebound because thats kind of what happened but for half an hour ago they were in the red. Its a rough week on the markets. But put in perspective, a rough week, a rough week coming off an extraordinarily good run. So after everything thats happened last week, looking at the dow or the s p 500, youre actually still up on the year. Yes. Most of your 401 k accounts look more like the s p 500 and year to date up 2. 44 . Not great. A week ago you were up a lot more and markets regaining some ground today and tumbled 4 this week. A lot of investors wondering if its a longoverdue correction were headed for or what. All right. Joining us now cnbc anchor sue herrera. Sue i have to say i love having sue on because we have been doing this for some decades. Right. And you need perspective at times like this, right . You need to have looked at it before and seen this in decades gone by to understand whether to panic or not. Exactly. It is great to see you guys. Ali, you are exactly right. I think its a good thing to take a step back and steph has pointed out because i watch you guys constantly. We have had a huge market rise so perhaps this is kind of i guess the pause that refreshes perhaps. Its the pause that refreshes. Isnt it hard to understand the president saying, nope, it is the fed getting out of control . When what the fed is doing in terms of Interest Rates is what any responsible fed would do in a time when the economy is so good. And also, dont you think its creating a cushion for them in the event we see a recession . Absolutely. You are absolutely right. And as a matter of fact, the former fed chief janet yellen pushed back hard on the president this morning saying the Federal Reserve is doing exactly what they should be doing. They have the opportunity to avoid inflation spiking and getting out of control which would be terrible for consumers and as a result of that they should keep on the rate increase schedule because the markets can handle it right now. I think what we are seeing basically is the market got kind of overvalued. We have had a huge run to the upside. We have some volatility because the markets worried about the trade and tariff situation, especially between the u. S. And china and so as a result of that people took some money off the table. I was a little worried as ali pointed out earlier when we lost 400 points and moved into the red. Now, we came back. I dont know what that means for the afternoon. But the volatility is definitely here and its a friday. So some people dont want to hold stocks over the weekend. Right. Because if Something Else goes wrong or late in the afternoon something happens. Look. We have been been seeing remarkable volatility on a daily and hourly basis and think back to 1992 i think it was. Allen greenspan raised rates maybe in september right before the election. No president like that is. No president wants it close to an election. During when President Trump wasnt president and complaining that janet yellen keeping rates too low for too long and then put in Jerome Powell on a similar schedule to what janet yellen was on and maybe even more aggressive and the president doesnt like that but president s dont like Interest Rates going up. It doesnt mean sue, you can speak to that, that investors care because if you draw a comparison, theres Steve Mnuchin saying this is normal market activity though when i saw the president speak yesterday and go after his own fed chair i thought, man, this is bad news. Do investors listen to what the president says . I think some investors do but i also think that investors are becoming a little bit numb because the president weighs in on so many different things. And theyre used to getting a comment almost constantly from the president about this topic or topic. And, you know, if youre a saver used to be you were getting nothing for the money and now with Interest Rates up a little bit, you are not getting a lot but youre getting more than you were say, six months to a year ago in a bank account. I think the individual investor is smarter than people give them credit for and hopefully using this selloff this week to take a look at what their plan is, are they meeting their goals . Do they need to kind of take a look at their investment portfolio and rejigger it a little bit in light of the volatility . I think its here to stay especially if the trade situation continues to kind of go back and forth between china and the u. S. Not just Interest Rates. Some of this is the trade stuff. Sue, greet see you, as always. You guys, too. It has to do with investors looking at tech stocks, for example. On fire. Now being valued at a trillion dollars and going, youre not valued at a trillion dollars selling that many iphones. It is the projected valuation and some people saying this is hold on a minute. Keep you posted. I would say this. Know how to log into your 401 k at least. This is the moment to know how to get there and then well talk about it. You dont need to be hitting buy or sell. Next, President Trumps making false claims on health care what . Including premiums. Weird, right . Including that premiums are going down on his watch. President trump is being accused of making false claims about health care, blasting democrats in an oped that was written in the newspaper just weeks before midterm voting begins so for facts sake lets break down whats true and not. Trump is claiming the democrats medicare for all ends medicare as we know it and take benefits away that seniors have paid for for their entire lives. Thats just not true. While the plan would change medicare to include everyone, and i think we have to talk about this without endorsing it, it expands benefits without premiums and deductibles and adding dental, vision and hearing aid coverage. Trump claiming the plan to quote cost astonishing 32. 6 trillion in the first 10 years. Guess what. His claim is true. According to two separate analysis of senator sanders proposal, however, supporters say this number doesnt paint the full picture because new federal spending, this 32. 6 trillion, would replace all existing premiums and deductibles for everyone in the country. So its 32. 6 trillion versus what . Theres a lot of debate about the cost to compare to our current system. One of the analysis found the total health care spending, public and private, would actually drop by 2 trillion in 1 scenario if the bill is law. It requires a major increase in taxes. That part is true. But then you wouldnt be paying premiums. Speaking of premiums, the president claims theyre coming down. That is a whopper. Thats false. The Kaiser Family foundation says the average premium for a Single Person up 3 while the average family premium is up 5 . There arent a lot of worlds in which the premiums going down and assume when somebody says the premiums are going down thats a lie and kaiser said premiums are expected to stabilize next year partially because insurers spiked the prices last year. Trump claimed he kept the promise to protect coverage for preexisting conditions. Thats false. The administration is backing a republicanled lawsuit arguing that obamacares protections for preexisting conditions are actually illegal. All right. So thats where we stand right now. Thats a mostly false oped about health care. We have a problem here. Wow. Did you see that. We have a problem here. Im here to help, ali. Is your seat ready for you . Can we talk now . I couldnt just move the chair around. We changed the table. Fyi, just waiting for wheels on the bottom of the chair. No wheels. No wheels. So listen. All right. Theres been so much talk even should usa today have published this. Opeds are Opinion Pieces and a difference of an opinion and spreading straight lies and when the president of the United States is talking about one of the most important issues, the health care of the American People yep. And spreading straightup lies thats more than malpractice. Theres a piece of me saying, great. Put it down on paper to fact check it. Its actually in a newspaper and what he often does is tell the falsehoods at a crowd at the rally. Its a select crowd. That oped retweeting 4 million times. Right. Id love to say 4 Million People are watching right now. But you know what, babe . We dont have 4 Million People. Well post this online. We need come on. In fact, well talk about that. Media companies and others that pulled out. Good question. For me, all guys on goldman to see what they do. A Major Development in the case that severely strained ties between turkey and the u. S. A Turkish Court released a North Carolina pastor from house arrest. This video of him today talking free. In 2016, he was one of two dozen americans detained after that failed co up in turkey. He was longtime resident of turkey. Joining us no is nbc news Foreign CorrespondentRichard Engel live in istanbul. The president is reacting this morning. What do we know about the release . And what the Trump Administration had to do with it, in anything . Reporter well, i think the Trump Administration had a lot to do with it. There have been long negotiations to get brunnson out of prison and then to house arrest and try to get him out of custody to go home. The efforts were political in nature. Theres been a lot of pressure put on this country, including sanctions that the Trump Administration put on turkey, sanctions which drove this economy into the gutter. So this is something that turkey has been trying to find a way out of because turkey doesnt want do see the economic hardship. Its been something that the Trump Administration wants to sell particularly to evangelical christians as a big win getting out one of their own from custody and today they managed to do it. I think the turks had an extra impetus to do this because of the increasing tension with saudi arabia. Frankly, turkey does not want to have a diplomatic fight with the very rich, very powerful saudi kingdom and having a fight with the United States at the same time. It now wants partners and friends if it faces any saudi backlash. All right. Richard, thank you so much. Joining us from istanbul. Now, back to saudi arabia and the disappearance of saudi journalist. It is not just the u. S. Government involved with the saudi government. U. S. Companies, lots of them, long made multibillion dollar deals with the kingdom. Energy companies. Exxonmobil and a Saudi Company spending 10 billion with a b dollars to build a petrol Chemical Plant in corpus christi, texas. Rowan companies is part of a 7 million and operating drilling wells. And others investing 6 billion over 10 years to create drilling rigs and weatherford with a 2 billion deal. Now on the defense side, theyre all in deals with saudi arabia to provide everything from tanks, missiles, jet fighters and choppers making billions upon billions off the saudi military and security efforts. The saudi government redirected billions of dollars to the Japanese Firm softbank taking the saudi money and became uber. Ubers largest shareholder with cash flowing in startups like wag, Delivery Service doordash, wework and more than just that. A massive investment in wework. Plenty, an agricultural company. Invidia making graphics cards used by millions of americans and slack. A lot of money all over the country. Cant believe youre still talking. This is so much. Huge. Even many commercial and Consumer Goods Companies that make items you buy every day like general electric, honeywell, billions of dollars in partnerships with saudi arabia. Yep. So that starts to explain some of the hesitancy in taking a strong position on something that should be so obvious to take a strong position on. Joining us from boston is a senior fellow at university of beirut and known Jamal Khashoggi for years. You made a point in an oped to say your knowing jamal, you havent been that open about that right now because you want people to understand how frequent this sort of thing is, the mistreatment, the miscarriage of human rights, the mistreatment of journalists and across the arab world, not just saudi arabia. Thats right. I think theres been a lot of people talkingnt h about how t know jamal and talked to him recently and i think he would say thats not the point. He has created a lot of interest in the u. S. And the west and some serious pushback now by Political Forces and the u. S. And other places but jamal would be the first one to say that this is really about the condition of human rights abuses and denials all across the arab world. He was mostly interested in saudi arabia because hes a Saudi Arabian but for years and years he worked to try to expand press freedoms, Civil Society freedoms, a life of dignity for people and universities and the private sector and all spheres of life where arab governments all across the region, not just saudi arabia, but all across the region millions of people have been denied their basic rights. And so, he would he, too, was working when he died apparently, apparently he died, but before he disappeared he seems to have been working to create a new institution to promote democracy and reform all across the arab world. And hes been trying this for years and years. To that point, is it even remotely possible because you have a piece titled khashoggi and the arab dark hole where foreign outrage refuses to tread. Speak to that. We just went through a few of the massive business partnerships between United States corporations and saudi arabia specifically. Well, this is the problem that across the whole region and across the whole spectrum of public life, say in the United States, but also in europe and everywhere else, government people, press people and nongovernment agencies, Business People, all across the society the lure of doing business with saudi arabia and many other rich, arab countries is so strong it hides any concerns people may want to have about human rights, democracy, freedom, dignity, equality, et cetera. The really lemm ma is that the khashoggi case accentuates a deeper, older and wider problem across the entire arab region and its in other countries, too. Iran, turkey, with denials of rights of the People Living in their countries but the really le dilemma is the denial of rights of citizens is pervasive and the problem caused by Government Policies and in the arab world and these arab governments are deeply and consistently supported by the u. S. And other foreign countries. So that link is very hard to break. Occasionally you will get the arab governments being asked by the United States or europeans to do this or to do that but not much f. You look at egypt, egypt is the worst case. 30,000, 40,000 people in jail. Places like bahrain. Syria, iraq. All over the region you have massive human rights abuses and journalists are one of the main targets now because theyre one of the few people, journalists and cultural producers, artists and writers, about the last place where people speak their mind freely and why so many of them have left and gone overseas. We think we believe in trade with other countries, we believe in the business relationships and between that that allows us to influence other countries in these ways around human rights or press freedoms. At what point does that line get crossed . What point are we so invested in saudi arabia and other countries for Regional Security reasons or in the case of saudi arabia money where we cant influence them . Where it takes the white house, you know, days and days to come out with an obvious comment that it should have come out condemning whatever happened here. Add with that President Trumps response yesterday. He said it specifically. In that answer. He talked about the degree to which we do business with saudi arabia. Who will take the business to china or russia coming down too hard on them. When the question was about a human life. Well, the reality is that these are decisions that have to be made by foreign governments. Each government has to decide what is more important for it . Promoting its values, shared human values or getting business deals done with saudi arabia and many other arab countries and not just arab countries. Many other countries have bad human rights records and oppressing their people and dealing with massive corruptions and things of that nature. The tragedy is that for the last 40, 50 years, certainly in my lifetime and i have been covering this as a journalist in the middle east, every single effort by arab Civil Society group that is try to promote freedom and equality and dignity and the rule of law has been either only symbolically or not at all supported by western governments particularly the United States beyond lip service. So its very hard to break through those walls that are facing us. Thank you for joining us and your analysis. Senior fellow and professor at American University of beirut. Very lucky to have him on today. And robin. Its really important for you like us thinking of Jamal Khashoggi as we should be, remember there are people like that all the world and in the middle east who are under arrest, who disappear, who are tortured and who are jailed just for asking for some basic improvements. Not looking for americanstyle press freedoms. We are literally just looking for a better life in which freedom of speech is respected. All right. It is time now for our monumental americans.
