With a storm surge, that water reverses and flows inward. It could easily go 30, 40 miles inland with this. Well handle it. Were ready. Were able. Get out of its way. Dont play games with it. Its a big one. Maybe as big as theyve seen, and tremendous amounts of water. The message to citizens is clear. Today is your last day to get out of the areas that have been placed under evacuation orders. Its going to disrupt services. Its going to destroy homes. It it going to destroy infrastructure. Disaster is at the doorstep, and its coming in. Its going to be a monster, so were like, yeah, were worried. Its important for us to evacuate. We dont need to take chances. We dont need to put personnel on the line to save us. We get 14, 15 inches of rain, all this is going to be under water again. Im worried about my clients, the older people that theyre being very well taken care of. This is our home, and were just going to stay here and protect our own stuff. I think puerto rico was incredibly successful. I actually think it was one of the best jobs thats ever been done with respect to what this is all about. I think that puerto rico was an incredible unsung success. Stephanies going to deal with that puerto rico stuff in a minute. Lets talk about Hurricane Florence. It is likely going to be the storm of a lifetime for parts of the east coast. Just moments ago, the National Hurricane center tweeted out data showing how powerful florence really is. Early this morning, it was producing wave heights of up to 83 feet high in the atlantic ocean. Thats the height of the waves. Thats not even the storm surge. Right now florence is about 485 miles that way southeast of where im standing. When it reaches the carolinas, it could dump up to 40 inches of rain and cause catastrophic flooding. The issue is this is slowmoving, and it may hang around here. Some are predicting possibly even a second landfall. Forecasters are predicting a lifethreatening storm surge. Remember, thats where a lot of the danger actually is. Between 12 and 20 feet that could swallow some of these barrier islands. This is the Cape Fear River behind me. Were probably about five feet above the level of the river. This is what it looks like 24 hours before a hurricane typically. Theres a light breeze. Its sunny. Its warm. You can see clouds developing. This is all going to change in the next 24 hours. Youre going to start to see those levels rising, those boats are going to rise. There must be 60 or 70 boats behind me in this arena. This is what its like down the North Carolina and South Carolina coast. Apocalyptic storm damage is possible if florence remains as it is. Now a category 4 destructive hurricane. Winds could level homes in addition to uprooting trees and toppling power poles. Right now a Mass Evacuation of at least 1. 5 Million People is underway in the carolinas and virginia, and just a short time ago, the National WeatherService Posted a satellite shot of this monster storm. I have to show this to you. Issuing a dire warning. Look at the storm, a dire warning for people to follow those evacuation orders and prepare for lifethreatening flooding. Joining me now is nbcs al roker and michael cramer. Hes the town manager of Carolina Beach about 25 miles southsoutheast of here. Its an island under mandatory evacuation. Michael, stay with me for a second. Al, let me start with you. Here is the latest. As you mentioned still a category 4 storm. We havent had much of a change from our earlier update. However, its a little closer now, 485 miles southeast of wilmington, North Carolina. Its 130 Miles Per Hour winds, so still a very strong category 4. Its movement northwest at 15 Miles Per Hour. Its actually slowed up just a little bit. The track of the storm brings it by friday morning at 8 00 a. M. Just south of wilmington, and then skirts along the coast and makes landfall allegedly about as a category 2 storm sometime saturday morning with 100 Miles Per Hour winds. Two takeaways, one, dont Pay Attention to the category of the storm. The Northeast Quadrant of the storm, thats where the strongest winds, the strongest storm surge is going to be, and look at what that would mean. That would mean to the west of wilmington, wilmington, and then on into myrtle beach, okay, so thats takeaway number one. Takeaway number two is this is the american model. The european model actually brings it just offshore and then it starts to drift down towards charleston. That for the coast worstcase scenario because from wilmington down to charleston, ali, everybody along that coast will at some point be in that Northeast Quadrant. Well see those storm surges, and then it brings it on into South Carolina and northern georgia gets involved, at least according to this. Again, its still early to tell. We have hurricane warnings now from much of the carolinas all the way down into central South Carolina and then hurricane watches down to edisto beach, and storm warnings from Cape Hatteras pass myrtle beach. You can see how far inland they go. The National Hurricane center issues four counties. The storm surge can literally go for miles. Sea water may be going inland right now from just west of or south of Wrightsville Beach to about cape lookout, we could see a storm surge of 9 to 13 feet. And put that on top of the high tide. So friday mornings high tide is 11 46 for charleston its about 12 28. Cape hatteras its 11 39. The second high tide will be friday night around midnight for Cape Hatteras, 12 03 Wrightsville Beach, 12 35 for charleston. Anything that is on top of that, any storm surge, thats on top of the high tides. The winds push all that water onshore, and nothing is going to stop it. Its just going to keep coming and coming. Then it stops, then the next high tide, and if this does what the euro is saying, its going to drift up the coast, down the coast, just kind of hanging around. There are no stirring currents, really, to bring this thing onshore. That to me is the worstcase scenario. Thats where it literally becomes a storm surge machine. Thats all it does. Al, i want to ask you about how this pattern of the storm has changed once it even stops being a hurricane and starts pushing inland, weve got a competing set of High Pressure regions that are containing it and pushing it west. Now we have places like charlotte. We have places like columbia, South Carolina. We even have places like atlanta that are going to see potentially devastating effects of this. Thats right. This is, again, where we kind of see the similarities to harvey. People moved inland to get away from it, and in fact, it may follow them, and earlier yesterday, we had the 10 to 20 inch rain swath from the carolina coast into virginia and parts of west virginia. Now, that may actually shift to the west, so even if you dont live along the coast, you have got to heed evacuation warnings. If they tell you to get out, get out because, first of all, youre putting yourself at risk, and then you put First Responders at risk, and this is the kind of storm that a certain at a certain point, nobodys coming for you. So just keep that in mind. Yep, and i was just going to get to that, al. Thank you. You and i are going to spend a lot of time talking to each other over the next couple of days. Live with me now is michael cramer. Hes the town manager for Carolina Beach. Carolina beach is about 15 miles basically due south of here. The way were situated, because were in wilmington, were about 10 miles in from the coast here. When you get to Carolina Beach, youre a beach. Youre actually on the coast. As al was saying, if this thing goes further south and it gets you with that Northeast Quadrant, this is the worstcase scenario for you. It is. Its catastrophic in the terms that we will get immense rain. Well get immense wind, and we will have complete total destruction for our tidal surge. One of the things that makes it very difficult on the beach strand is that we have not only our beach, the oceanfront, but we also have a sound, and we get a lot of tidal flooding on a regular basis. Thats typical of this area. This is an estuary. This will rise, and when that surge comes in, there will be a surge here in places that are surrounded by water. Anything thats in the middle is going to go under. As al said people have to realize theres a point that will come at which you and your ems, youll be on your island, youll be in Carolina Beach, but youre not sending people out to rescue people once the winds hit 50 Miles Per Hour. Thats correct. Were under a mandatory evacuation effective 8 00 tonight. At that point well close the bridge down, and nobody will get onto our island. You can get off but not on. After 45 miles an hour of sustained winds on the bridge, well close the outbound lanes. Everybody thats there will be there for the duration. After 50 miles an hour worth of wind speeds, i wont send my crews out to try and rescue. Because theyre in danger. Exactly. You have to make sure trees are removed and power lines are not loose. If you get into trouble because you stayed home, it could be days. It will definitely be days, three to five is what im estimating before we actually get to the point where we can go talk to somebody, shake their hand and say, congratulations you made it through. Yeah. Thats a long time to wait. And youre going door to door to try and get people out. Youve still got some hard liners. Thats right. We do. Were going door to door. We have our megaphones going riding the streets trying to tell people to get off the island by 8 00. Most people are. We have 75 to 80 of the population that is gone. Well have another 20 that are going to go before 8 00. Im expecting well probably have at least 100 hardliners that insist on staying. Honestly honestly, thats a terrible move. It makes it very risky. You cant protect your property. There is no way. When it wind and storm surge comes in, theres nothing you and i can do to save our property. Youre sitting inside worrying, waiting and watching. Good luck, you and i will stay in close touch. We hope for the best for you and you i will make sure were talking through this whole thing. Sounds good. Joining me on skype is captain john reed with the United States coast guard based out of charleston. Hes Commanding Officer of the coast guard sector there. Captain, thank you for joining us. What is the situation where you are . Good morning, ali. Thank you very much for the call. The situation here is you wouldnt think that we were, you know, a day and a half away from the arrival of a hurricane of this magnitude, so we have the opportunity now for people to make preparations to their personal wellbeing as well as their boats and their houses, and then heed the warnings and get out of town. The mandatory evacuations are in place. We are moving our families out. Our stations in the low lying areas are being closed up, and we are preparing for the arrival of up to a category 3 hurricane here in charleston. Captain, tell me two things what is the coast guard sector charleston, what do you cover, and what does code whiskey mean . Coast guard sector charleston covers from the North CarolinaSouth Carolina border all the way down to the essentially the florida georgia border. So its the states of South Carolina and georgia, and then port condition whiskey means theres restrictions on vessels coming into and out of the port. We want to make sure the vessels are coming in have a plan to depart. That will progress into condition yankee and zulu where the port will be completely shut down, which will impact commerce. And at this point were less than 24 sorry, captain, at this point i think were losing our audio on you. Were going to try and reset that and get you back. Captain john reed of coast guard sector charleston. Lets go back to stephanie rule at msnbc headquarters in new york. Thanks so much. Were going to take a break. Pope francis is calling for a summit at the vatican to meet with archbishops from around the world to focus specifically on preventing sex abuse by clergy and protecting children. The meeting is believed to be the first of its kind but its not happening until late february. Top u. S. Church leadership are heading to the vatican tomorrow to meet with pope francis, including the archbishop of washington, d. C. , Cardinal Donald wuerl. He form early was the archbishop of pittsburgh and is planning to discuss his possible resignation with francis in the face of revelations that he mismanaged past clerical abuse. That makes it sound like it was just a bad habit, and we both know its not. Joining me now mitchell garabedian, an attorney representing 50 victims in the Pennsylvania Diocese including the archdiocese of pittsburgh. Michael, lets start with this the february summit, the Associated Press says that this, quote, signals a realization at the highest levels of the church that clergy sex abuse is a global problem and not restricted to the anglo saxon world. When i read that, were not talking about nail biting or staying up too late. To say were going to have a summit, yep, thats a big deal but what does it signal to you that theyre not having it until february . What could the Catholic Church possibly be focus oed on betwee now and then thats more important . What the Catholic Church is focused on is repolishing their image. Theyre trying to build theyre working with the optics here. They dont care about investigations to reveal the truth of preventing clergy sexual abuse. Between now and the meeting in february, these leaders will talk amongst themselves to try to determine how can we refocus the how can we polish the image of the Catholic Church because were taking an awful hit here. Right now theyre in panic mode. How many of these leaders probably participated in the coverup over the past decades if they werent actual abusers . I mean this is very insincere. It lacks credibility, and its a slap in the face to children to have such a meeting not only in six months but to have it at all. Why hasnt the Catholic Church, which has a long history of covering up the criminality of sexual abuse and allow ing sexual abuse have a plan in place, not talk, not words, not speeches, but a plan in place right now to allow an investigation to go forward so that prevention can have a meaningful prevention can be meaningfully accomplished. Its just so smoke and mirrors by the Catholic Church. Swift action, a full investigation with transparency is the only route that the Catholic Church could possibly take to get out of this, but to your point, theyre not, and i want to talk about archbishop because youre representing 50 victims of sex abuse in the pennsylvania catholic diocese. One of those cases you settled with the Pittsburgh Diocese in 2016 for a whole lot of money. It involved an abusive priest who served in Alleghany County from 85 to 88. Talk to us about where he was then and where he was in the state of pennsylvania during this period of time because, again, even if hes going to the vatican tomorrow to meet with the pope, we know that cases have been settled several years ago. We know that this big situation came out several months ago, and the pope has done nothing. Archbishop weurl has been in hiding. Hes been in protective mode. Trying to figure out, like the rest of the leaders in the Catholic Church, how not to let the truth out, how to prevent transparency because through transparency, victims can heal and the world will see the truth. I mean, its an absolute insult for pope francis and all these other leaders to say we now realize its a global problem. Its been a global problem for decades. For the past five years, ive been litigating in federal court in connecticut 50 claims where children were abused not by a priest but by a at a jesuit run school, a Fairfield University run school, and ive been representing those clients, and weve been litigating for about five years with cocounsel Simmons Hanley at my side, but the Catholic Church is making believe that all of a sudden they realize this is a global problem. Take away their robes. Take away their religion. Theyre criminals. They belong in jail. Why are they opposing the statute of limitations at every possible state in the United States. Theyre pouring tens of millions of dollars into lobbying groups in new york state and many other states to oppose statute of limitations so that the truth cannot be revealed, so that justice cannot be obtained, so that victims cannot heal. Its an absolute insult by these criminals. Let that sink in. Sex crimes against children for decades. Imagine if it was just a group of men in a club, if they were not Catholic Priests, if they did not get to wear the robes. Imagine the outrage that there would be. Imagine these people will be arrested and still archbishop wherl stands there. He is the highest Catholic Priest in the United States. He was the guy who ran pittsburgh. Think about that. Mitchell, thanks so much for joining me today. Lets go back to my partner ali velshi. You know where he is, covering this monster storm heading straight to the east coast. Welcome back, im ali velshi live in wilmington, North Carolina. The states governor issuing this dire warning, the time to prepare is almost over. Florences damaging winds and rains are expected to begin hitting the coast early friday morning, maybe thursday night. Youll certainly feel the effects earlier than that depending on how long florence drifts. Some coastal areas could see more than three feet of rain. At the same time, residents could be dealing with Tropical Storm wind gusts for up to 60 straight hours and hurricane wind gusts for 24 straight hours. This place that im in right now might be under Hurricane Force winds for 24 hours. Think about that, new video, this is it just in from the International Space station shows you how massive this storm is. Its swirling at 130 Miles Per Hour across the atlantic moving at about 17 Miles Per Hour. Joining me live is ken graham, hes the director of the National Hurricane center. Ken, ive been watching your updates regularly. I want to ask you one thing that people are asking me on twitter. There are different types of forecasts. There are different forecasting models, and they show slightly different things. Why are there different forecasts, and why do we decide which ones were using and not decide on others . Yeah, we got different models we use here at the Hurricane Center. We do get those different tracks. What we do here instead of using one or two we use an ensemble. We get dozens of model runs within there. For the most part we use a combination. We try to use that ensemble and use an average of those, and it really helps us out. The thing is with this system, we need to be careful looking a the those models. We need to be careful looking at the track in this case. The storm is so big and the impacts so large, even those impacts on Hurricane Force winds, rain and storm surge extend out of the cone. Thats what we need to be careful of. Lets concentrate definitely on these impacts. What, in your opinion, are the most dangerous aspects of the storm . Wind is dangerous, floodings dangerous, storm surge is dangerous. What are your worried about here . Just every facets of the impacts of the system becomes a major player. Each one of these is another forecast point. The closer those are together the slower the storm and areas receiving prolonged winds over saturated soil, so were looking at prolonged Power Outages and winds. Look at the rainfall forecast. Its absolutely staggering. 240 20 to 40 inches potentially. Its not just a coastal event, those inland floods could be extremely dangerous. We see six to ten inches over portions of North Carolina. And looking at some of that heavy rain getting into South Carolina, very dangerous, and of course the storm surge causing half the fatalities traditionally and looking back in history in these tropical systems and the storm surge is staggering in some of these areas with values 4 to 99 to 13 feet. So critical to Pay Attention to where you are, listen to those local officials. If they tell you to get out, youve got to get out. Today is the last day. We need to prepare for this. In terms of the magnitude of this storm and the number of people affected by it, a few days ago, places like charlotte were still on the periphery, columbia, South Carolina, was going to get some bad water. Atlanta was in the clear, and now all three of those cities might be getting the effects of this storm fairly directly . And that shows how large this system is. Looking at this, 170 miles away from that center we have Tropical Storm force winds, and anywhere in here, this is still our cone, and that really means twothirds of the time the center could be any one of these areas, and as a result those impacts are going to be widespread, so if you look at it with time, its really about being ready. Its not necessarily looking at the values of where you are. That could change with time. Small shifts in that forecast of just the rainfall values, little differences can make a big difference on the ground. Right, and again, as i was talking to the town manager from Carolina Beach about 15 miles from here, there are still some people who think that sticking around helps them save their property. When youre talking about this type of wind, that type of rain, the force in which it comes in and the storm surge, no person can save their property . In this case you have that were talking 10 foot of storm surge, 13, that property gets damaged and destroyed. With a storm surge and the flooding, so the bottom line is about saving lives. Thats our mission here at the Weather Center and throughout the Hurricane Center here. The bottom line is saving your life. If the officials tell you to leave, youve got to get out to protect your life, simple as that. All right, based on what youve seen in prior storms, particularly when we look at things like harvey, the lasting effect, people might say i can make it through a few days of storms, now were having people ho honestly say it will be a matter of days if not longer before you get your power back and fresh water. Yeah, because of the slow speed here. This is a hurricane. Youve got a hurricane right off the coast, and that right there looking at thursday night, and then friday morning, and this right here is saturday. Look how long were a hurricane right on the coast. Were talking about prolonged winds even outside this cone. If you think about it, all that rain and you have the winds for so long, thats going to knock down trees. Youre going to have incredible Power Outages, long lasting effects. Its not necessarily about getting through. Its the after effects. Its the indirect effects, and that can also be deadly as we lose power, youre hot, and all the issues associated with the indirect fatalities. Just because you get through it doesnt mean youre out of danger. Ken graham, thanks for the work and you your colleagues are doing at the National Hurricane center. Ken is the director of the National Hurricane center. Were going to be talking to him a lot. Joining me now is nbcs gabe gutierrez. Hes in an evacuation shelter in Conway High School in conway, South Carolina. This is a major issue. There are more and more people under this hurricane watch who may not have the means to get away or the speed or the transportation ability or issues that stop them from getting away. These shelters are popping up all over the place. Yeah, ali, thats exactly right. Weve been seeing people trickling into these shelters throughout the day and we expect many more. More than 100 people are at this shelter right now here in conway, South Carolina. Its about 20, 25 minutes inland from myrtle beach, and, again we expect more and more people to head up the highway as they head inland. This is the area where those highways, the eastbound lanes were closed down and all westbound lanes were heading away from this massive storm inland, and we were actually just speaking with this woman a short time ago. You just got here, didnt you . I did about probably 20 minutes ago. About 20 minutes ago. Whats your name . Laura miller. Its so good to meet you. You live in the myrtle beach area. I do. I live by the conway myrtle beach line. You decided to evacuate a short time ago. Whyd you end up coming . The safety reasons and the flooding. The area were going to be in, it looks like were totally in a flood zone. Right, so ali, you know this as well, overnight was that track that shifted just a bit, and it looks like myrtle beach might get more of the storms impact. Whatd you think when you heard that . It was scary. Ive never been in a hurricane, this close to one. I lived in atlanta previously, and we got the waves, you know, sometimes just the rain, but nothing like this before. And you have family in atlanta. They were concerned, they wanted you to get out. Right, theyve been texting me now for two or three days insuccess incessantly. You have your blanket, do you have enough supplies . Yet, and they also are going to provide meals. They have water. Its really actually very nice. The red cross does a great job, but yeah, i think probably about three days at least. I hope no longer than that. So good to meet you. Thank you so much for talking to us. Thank you so much. This is something were seeing more and more of. We expect more people to come to shelters like this one. There are about a half dozen shelters here. More are expected to open over the next coming hours. Capacity, they hope to have more than 20,000 people, the space for 20,000 people available over the next couple of days. They urge folks if theyre thinking of staying in mandatory evacuation zones, dont do it. Come to one of these shelters or get out of town. Ali. And that is the big piece of advice. Thanks very much. People tweet me and say why are you guys doing this. People listen to their local news or things like that for this information. This is for people who know people in these evacuation areas or close to this hurricane. Call them. Email them, text them, tell them do take this seriously. You might be far inland in georgia, in South Carolina, in the western part of North Carolina where this is going to be felt, in virginia, and you need to tell people, this might come your way. Youll be out of power. Youll be flooded. You may need fresh water. Take a look at where these shelters are. Get prepared for this thing. Coming up next, im going to talk to a Hurricane Hunter who just landed after flying directly into the storm. Hes going to tell us how this looks compared to other storms hes seen. Im live in wilmington, North Carolina. Ill be back in a moment. Needles. Essential for the cactus, but maybe not for people with rheumatoid arthritis. Because there are options. Like an unjectionâ„¢. Xeljanz xr. A oncedaily pill for adults with moderate to severe ra for whom methotrexate did not work well enough. But for you, one pill a day may provide symptom relief. Ask your doctor about xeljanz xr. An unjectionâ„¢. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. This morning google is facing scrutiny over its use of gps tracking. The company is accused of recording location data of Android Device users even if they opted out. And now the Arizona Attorney general is launching a probe into the practice according to the Washington Post, one that could mean up to a 10,000 fine per violation. Google told the ap back in august that it provides, quote, clear descriptions of location tools and robust controls so people can turn them on or off and delete their history at any time. Joining me now is a journalist who broke the arizona probe story, my friend tony rahm. Hes the Washington Post tech policy reporter. What are they actually doing here . Yeah, the issue is once again google has found itself in the cross hairs of regulators because of its privacy practices, and really, this all stems back to a story in the Associated Press this august that found that users who were on their android smartphones and thought they had turned off tracking of their location actually had some of that location data tracked, time stamped, and stored on their devices perhaps without their knowledge, and so now we have a probe from the attorney general of arizona, a republican, whos looking into whether this was deceptive to users, whether google misled users as to what was happening with respect to their privacy. This could have the sort of Snowball Effect across the country if other state attorney generals or the federal government begin to take a look at the company. Yikes, whats the worst case for google . When you say 10,000, thats per violation. How many people could we be talking about here . This is the difficult thing. We could be talking about millions of people and fines that reach into the tens of millions potentially if you do the math on the back of a nap n napkin. In some cases regulators are reluctant to bring those kinds of sky high penalties, and in the past google has just simply been able to pay it. The company practically mints money these days. I think the real worstcase scenario for google would be heightened attention in the nations capital. It was only a few years ago that the federal trade commission penalized google for its privacy practices. If they find google misled consumers with respect to Location Tracking they could issue fines as welcome pounding the effect here in the United States and potentially abroad. Theres a chance this could snowball for the company around the country. I dont know, googles got an awful lot of money. Its tough to think of a fine that they couldnt handle. Tony, great reporting. Great piece. Well be sure to stay on it. Lets take you back to my partner ali velshi live in wilmington, North Carolina, with more on category hurricane 4 florence closing in on the east coast. I want to talk to somebody whos been up close with this hurricane. Hes the flight director for noaa joining me from lakeland, florida. You ran an eighthour mission yesterday through the carolina coast, what did you see . Hey, ali, we were flying between the whole east coast all the way from florida up through the carolinas, and we did two rings around the storm, dropped a total of 37 of our portable weather instruments around the storm to get the environment in which the storm is embedded to try to fine tune that track and that intensity forecast as it approaches the carolinas. Were looking at video from that mission. Im always fascinated by how you do this, how you fly planes into these hurricanes, but youve seen some of these. Youve been doing these for a while. Does florence look different to you, and in what ways . Florence, we had our p3 aircraft a couple of days ago at its point of maximum intensification, what we call rapid intensification, a classic eye. We dont see that every day. An amazingly powerful storm. This storm is defying the odds. We showed dry air entrainment which should have been weakening the storm, it did not. This storm makes its own environment as it goes along. In that regard, its a lot it has reminiscences to katrina. What is it youre looking for . Youre heading out soon . What is it youre looking for . You talk about deterioration of the eye or the weakening of the storm. Is that the kind of information were getting from you to be able to enhance our forecasting . Thats contaexactly what we doing. Were spending a fair amount of our time today this is our track were planning to fly today. I dont know if you can see it very well. All along the east coast, what were trying to find north of the storm is the strength of that high thats steering it towards the carolinas. What were trying to find west of the storm is any sign of a weakening factor, any kind of sheer, any kind of dry air entrainment, anything thats going to bring you good news. And were not seeing that yet. Its kind of remarkable. These are the kinds of things we look for to say all right, maybe its not going to be as bad as it is. Thanks jack. Were going to take a break, were going to continue to be here through this storm so we can bring you the most up to date information on how to keep you and your loved ones safe. Im ali velshi. As millions of americans are preparing for Hurricane Florence, the president is still praising his response to millions of americans who were devastated by Hurricane Maria in puerto rico last fall. I think that puerto rico was incredibly successful, and it was actually the toughest one of all, because it is an island and you cant truck things on it to, and it is everything that is by boat. And we moved in a hospital, and tremendous hospital in the form of a ship, and you know that, and i think that the governor has been very nice and the g governor will tell you what a great job we did, and the hardest a has been puerto rico, because of the island nature, and it is one of the best jobs that has ever been done with respect to what this is a all abo about. And the job that fema and Law Enforcement and everybody did working along with the governor in puerto rico, i think it is tremendous, and puerto rico was incredible unsung success. A boat in the form of a ship. An unsung success. Those numbers that you saw there on the screen, that was the number of americans killed in puerto rico, and for facts sake, mr. President , lets please take a look at what the incredible unsung success looks like from the ground. September 20th, 2017, maria slammed into puerto rico with 155 Miles Per Hour winds. A msnbc told fox it is like a 50 or 60 wind tornado that raged across the island like a buzz saw. And then the power went out. So lets leave the lights out for the rest of the segment. When the storm was over, there was complete devastation, and remote areas were completely cut off. Without power, you know that problems quickly mount. No water in the home, and the toilets wont flush, and sewage cannot be pumped out of entire neighborhoods, but people need water, so they have to drink what they k. And americans were forced to drink from contaminated streams. Is that success, mr. President . Without power or clean water, diseases, they began to spread. Wounds can cannot be cleaned especially when medicine is in very short supply, and fema in the effort to respond gave out 200,000 meals per days, and that sound likes a lot, right . But it is not close to the 2 million needed. Imagine, mr. President , families standing in line hoping to be the lucky 1 in 10 who actually gets food. That is if they were near a fema camp. Is that what success looks like . And add to that the bodies that needed to be burial, and so they applied for fema burial aid, and 75 of the 4,231 requests for the funeral assistance were approve oed and to get that assistance a death certificate showing that the person died as part of the disaster is needed. How about that, president trump, is that what you call successful. But until last month, the official death count was only 64 people, and this is mr. President , a few dozen more when you said this. Every death is a horror. But if you look at a real catastrophe like katrina, and you are looking at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds of people that died, and you are looking at what happened here with really a storm that was just totally overpowering, and nobody has seen anything like this, and 16 versus literally thousands of people, and you can be proud. Everybody around the table, and everybody watching can be really proud of what has taken place. But now that number is officially 2,975 people. Is that a real a catastrophe yet . Well, imagine if this happened in wisconsin, missouri or delaware, and would 3. 4 million americans be left to suffer for an entire year . So, no, mr. President , that is not success, and it is truly mind boggling that you would even say that. To Rick Santorum who said, blame it on that country, puerto rico. Puerto rico is a u. S. Territory. You do not need a passport to get there. And those people can vote. So no, it is not a separate country, and they are not our neighbor. They are our family. We will hear more on puerto rico on Andrea Mitchell reports, and she is going to be speaking with fema director mitch long. We will be right back. It is time now for your business of the week. Why would the administration transfer millions before the Hurricane Season is about to hit. And then he shocked victims by praising what the team did in puerto rico. I think that what we did in puerto was tremendous, and incredible
