A bigger voice. Many people dont know who he is, now he has a bigger voice. Thats okay. Ive never respected him. Ive never had a lot of respect. Senator burr said it best, if you knew anything, why didnt you report it when you were before all these committees, including their committee. He had a chance to report. He never did. This just came up lately, and its a disgusting thing, frankly. Look, i say it, i say it again, that whole situation is a rigged witchhunt, a totally rigged deal. They could be looking at all the people that got fired by them, all of the people that got fired. They should be looking at bruce orr and his wife nelly for dealing with russians. They should be looking at steele, all these fbi guys who got fired and demoted. Its a really weird its not us. Its a rigged witchhunt. Ive said it for a long time. [ inaudible ] say it . I think bruce orr is a disgrace. I suspect ill be taking it away quickly. I think hes a disgrace. For him to be in the justice department, doing what he did, thats a disgrace. That is disqualifying for mueller, and mr. Mueller has a lot of conflicts also directly yourself. You know that. Mr. Mueller is highly conflicted. In fact comey is like hi best friend. Satly some mueller is convicted. Let him write his report. Theres no collusion, if he was doing an honest report, he would write it on the other side. Take a look at what they did, including colluding with the russians. The other side. [ inaudible ] i cant hear you too well. You have a helicopter here. [ inaudible ] well, turkey has been a problem for a long time. They have not acted as a friend. Well see what happens. They was a wonderful christian pastor, a wonderful man, pastor brunson. They made up the phony charge that hes a spy. Hes not a spy. Hes going through a trial right now, if you call it a trial. They should have given him back a long time ago, and turkey has in my opinion agented ve ee eed very, very badly. Were not going to taking it sitting down. They cant take our people. You will see what happens. [ inaudible ] i dont talk about that now. I think the whole manafort trial is very sad when you look at whats going on. I think its a sad day for our country. He worked for me for a very short period of time, but you know what . He happens to be a very good person. I think its very sad what they have done to Paul Manafort. Thank you very much. Did morning, everyone. Im ali velshi, my colleague Stephanie Ruhle is off this morning. Joining mess ining me is jeff. He was talking about clearances, Paul Manafort. What do you make of it . Reporter we can start with the manafort headline. Weve seen is the president and white house aides do this in the past where they try to minimize and rationalize the president s connections to people who have been ensnared by the russia probe. And manafort worked for the campaign during a crucial part, where it wasnt quite clear he wouldnt emerge as the nominee. Manafort was brought in to shore up all the delegates. On the other headline of the day, the president s decision to pull the security clearance of john brennan, that decision triggering this remarkable rebuke from an unbroken chain of former cia chiefs and deputy directors, going back two decad decades. You saw the president embrace the talking point that rich ar burr, the senator from North Carolina offered up. He was pointing to the opsaid that brennan wrote for New York Times, the headline indicating that the president s claims of collusion are hogwash. Richard burr makes the point if hes purporting that as a fact, why wasnt that included in the intel in 2017. The president embracing that position. If that was the case, why didnt he say it, ali . Geoff, thanks very much. Geoff bennett there for us at the white house. Bill kristal, i dont know if you had a chance to listen in, what do you make of that . I was struck by him saying that Paul Manafort is a very good person. Im not in a position to know which counts they will find him guilty or not. Pardoning somebody by trumps account that he was ensnared unjustly and is a good person. He always has two things to say for somebody who is in legal trouble. Whatever he says, and that he didnt work for me for very long. With george papadopoulos, his was a coffee boy, theres always some mitigating relationship with that person. But its generally speaking been a rough week for the president. Omarosa continues to get headlines, and he continues to talk about the Mueller Investigation. Do you have a sense that the president is feeling unusually under pressure this week . You would think so, but he seemed relaxed there. Ive given up trying to understand his psychology, but giving the insanity, hes steady on a lot of things. Hes intense on discrediting the mueller report, defending people who are targets of mueller, and most of us watching this trial might think, gee, theres something problematic there. Again there are normal ways to do that. If someone has a security clearance, they leave government, they get ensnared, theres procedures for doing that. He jumped over those procedures, did it on his own. Im not at fan of brennan, i was critical of him as a director, but to see every other director step in, they understand were now in a position where the president is inserting a right to reach in and deprive individuals of clearances, despite the protocols. Theres a process set up to remove robert mueller, the Deputy Attorney general, since the attorney general is recused. That was put in as a safeguard against the president reaching in and removing special counsels. If you think about what the president is doing with brennan, it lays the predicate. Im the president thats the bigger concern than the president perhaps being petty or personal about it. Too i right there. When we come back from the break, were going to talk more about the implications of removing the security clearance from john brennan. The president is getting heat. Well have a list of former intel chiefs bill was just talking about who have signed a stunning letter to the president. You are watching velshi ruhle when we come back. While President Trump defends stripping security clearance from former cia director john brennan, hes gearing up to remove more clearances, according to a new report in the washington post. If President Trump thought he would silence his critics by making this move, he was wrong. More than a dozen former top intel officials are publicly chastising the president for his decision. In a letter, 13 former director at the cia and dni say, quote insin ways and allegations of wrongdoing are baseless. We have never before seen the approval or removal of security clearances used as a political tool. Buffett letters cosigners mike mo morell the risk is a number of people will no longer speak out, because theyll be afraid of taking action against them. Thats not all. The navy admiral who oversaw the raid of Osama Bin Laden is blasting the president as well. He writes john brennan is one of the finest Public Servants i have ever known. Fewer americans have done to protect this country than john. His honesty and character i have never been in question, except by those who dont know him. Therefore, i would consider it an honor if you would revoke my security clearance as well, so i can add my name to the list of men and women who have spoken up against your presidency. I hoped you would rise to the occasion and become the leader this great nation needs. A good leader trying to embody the best qualities of his or her organization. A good leader sets the example for others to follow. A good leader always puts the welfare of others before himself or herself. Your leadership, however, has shown little of those qualities. Through your actions you have ed us in the eyes of our children, humiliated us on the world stage, and worst of all divided us. If you think the mccartyera tactics will suppress the criticism, you are sadly mistaken. The criticism will continue until you become the leader we prayed you would be. He essential served three president s, rising through the rank, he served as chief of staff, and them denty director where he helped establish the National Counterterrorism center. He retired after 25 years with the agency to work in the private sector. In 2008, he advised then senator barack obama during his president ial campaign, and then served as president obamas Homeland Security adviser for four years the obama nominated him to the cia director job in january of 2013, sworn in two months later. We should know that brennan is currently a Senior NationalSecurity Intelligence analyst for nbc news and msnbc. Joining me is joshua getner and bill kristol, with whom we were just talking. Theres a piece, that as you mentioned, youre no fan of john brennan. How does that square with your view of what the president has done . It doesnt at all justify what the president has done. This was before the story broke. Which he kept throughout the Obama Administration as a routine, even though he wrote pieces for the Weekly Standard criticizing president obama and so forth. Its been a strong history of bipartisanship here. Its part of it about intimidation, but i think part of it is an attempt to discredit part of the attack on the deep state. Dont believe. What trump is telling people, especially his supporters, dont believe any of these intelligence people. Theyre all liars, all deep state. Theyre all just in the business of attacking. So when you see mike hayden or bob gates or leon panetta, so i very much disapprove of what trump has done. Politically from his point of view, theres a method to his madness, im afraid. If the attack on the deep state continues, what it does, what its shown you in other historical settings in other countries, it allows a leader and that leaders cabal to say whatever they want to, because they fended off criticism of the civil service, the court, fended off criticism of the media. Its dangerous, and thats why i think its gratifying to see some of the most distinguished, respected military and Intelligence Officers who have served this country in recent decades, come out, come out quickly and forcefully in defense the director brennan. More importantly in response to what the president has done here. This group knows all of us who have had security clearances, its not a perk, not a political spoil to be given to friends of the president and taken away from those he doesnt like. Its a serious tool to be used for serious National Security work. Lets follow with your logic, bill. Does the president move forward and start to strip the clearance of people involved in the Mueller Investigation . Well, he said he would do it to bruce orr, a lawyer at the justice depend, and then to mid level people whose comments he doesnt like, then you do get to intimidation, because these people dont have the sort of Job Opportunities that a john brennan or clapper and others have, and you do get to an attempt to discredit everyone. The president said in the standup before leaving the white house that its terrible what they have done to manafort, to Paul Manafort. The they thats a characteristic comment by a demagogue. Who is the they . Its a legal system. Hes saying theres a giant conspiracy, a ton of lawyers, presumably the judges who didnt dismiss the case, all the witnesses, many of them people working in banks, who so that kind of rhetoric, that the they is out to get you, thats the paranoid style of american politics, the style of a demagogue, and its all of a piece. Josh, i sort of like bills analysis on this being about discrediting, discrediting at large anybody involved in the Mueller Investigation, or the idea that russians were involved in the election, or frankly anyone who is a critic, but its not divorced from the intimidation of those in the intelligencegathering community what role does it play as the president who mentioned bruce orr, who the country doesnt know, and people who are more junior in the justice or intelligence system, what is the message that some of these people will take . The message seems to be speak out against this presidency, or even do your job, because thats what director brennan juan doing in respect to some of the analysis he was asked to do by the previous president , so speak out, do your job, some combination, and you will suffer the wrath of this president and lose your clearance if you are in government, can radically change the opportunities available to you. Of course theres some jobs in government that require a clearance to do them. The opportunities outside of government that is linked to clearances are numerous. Its not something thats given out because the government is rewarding people. The government wants some people outside of government to have those clearances, to offer continuity, to help defense contractors with work that the government needs done, and to chill speech is worrisome for the speech and worrisome, because those are needs of this government. Gentlemen, thanks very much for your analysis. Josh geltzer and bill kristol. The jury is still deliberating in alexandria, virginia, as they discuss manaforts fate. Its day two of jury deliberation in the tax fraud trial against President Trumps former Campaign ChairmanPaul Manafort. Seven hours a into the deliberation, the jury sent the judge a set of questions. The definition of shelf companies, and a question about reasonable doubt. Also requesting something to do with the indictment. Just a short time ago, President Trump defended Paul Manafort while at the same time trying to distance himself from him. Listen. The whole manafort trial is very sad, when you look at whats going on there, i think its a sad day for our country. He worked for me for a very short period of time, but you know what . He happens to be a very good person. I think its very sad what they have done to Paul Manafort. Lets bring in Julia Ainsley outside the courthouse in virginia. Nick acerman, and former assistant special watergate prosecutor. Julia, what is the update from the court, first of all. Reporter we just left. There were a series of conversations with the jury out of the room between the two sides and the judge over what might be unsealed while the case is going on. Well hear from around 2 00 p. M. To unseal motions. The judge thinking that would be disruptive to unseal these motions, and the conversations theyve had at the bench. Now he wants to wait until after the trial, but he says he does realize the importance that the press would have to that. He said a thirsty presses essential. I think thats interesting. He knows the judge has been gotten beaten up for being heavyhanded, but as far as the jury goes, that 2 00 p. M. Conference will have nothing to do with the timing of their verdict. Theyre still waiting for more. The questions came out yesterday. We havent heard from them yet today. When you mentioned thirsty press, i took a drink of my water here. Nick, it seems like the jury is taking is very seriously. Whats whew initial impression for this is not a regular tv trial where somebodys put up for murder and they come in and say guilty or not. They have to make that decision as to 18 separate counts, and some independent of each other. You may find him responsible for one, not for something else. Exactly. If you look at these questions in toto, were looking a smart jury relating to this form that has to be submitted. Called an fbar. Anybody who has interested in a Foreign Company has to fill this out. One you look at that county and realize manafort had a 5050 ownership with his wife. Theres proof in the trial relating to this, but if you look at what the jury did, and so the question is, what does it take to convict or not convict manafort. The fact that theres a 50 50 ownership, does that make a difference . I think what theyre looking at is that particular count. If the jury is actually going through the counts seriatum, one by one, and theyre up to that, i think a verdict will be this afternoon. And the judges response would be to rely on your collective information . If hes reluctant to give more information, would that be because that becoming evidence . Yes. And also the question about the indictment. The indictment is not evidence. So thats why the judge did not give them the indictment. On the other hand, i do believe they have these summary charts that were put in by various government agents that summarize the evidence on both the tax charges and the bank frayed charges. All they need to do is just go through those. And julia, they seem to have asked for more space, because it looks like they want to lay stuff out and look at more paperwork . They said they want to meet in their break room, not the jury room. The judge make a joe but when the courthouse was built, he made sure there was enough space for his nam bers, but not the jury. Its a documentheavy case, thats good for the prosecution in a way, because they say the documents are the star witness here. They dont want them to be distracted by what the defense has said is an untrust worthy testimony by rick gates, the former bit partner. Thats an excellent point. What do you make of the fact, nick, that the jury asked the judge to redefine reasonable doubt . If you go to the form that had to be sent in, i think you have a situation of a 5050 between the wife and the husband. So you have a pretty sophisticated jury. They may not have picked up on the technical niceties. Thats why theyre discussing this point to me reasonable doubt and the question about that form really make a lot of sense if what theyre doing is considering that particular count at this point in their deliberations, all of which is not good news for the defense. But it is good news for a jury that seems to be take their responsibilities very seriously. Nick ackerman, thank you for joining us, and Julia Ainsley, National Security and justice reporter, thank you to both of you. The tapes keep coming. President trump now telling advisers he wants attorney general Jeff Sessions to arrest her, according to vanity fair. Omarosa sat down with msnbc, this on lara trump, whos offering her a deal. The only thing we have to consider, where were talking salary as far as the campaign is concerned, as you know, everything is public. And all the money that we raise and that pays salaries is directly from smalldollar donors for the most part. I know you were making 179 at the white house, and i think we can work something out where we keep you right along those lines, specifically adding up the numbers, whether were talking about 15k a month, what does that add up to . Yeah, so thats 180,000. Does that sound like a fair deal for you . Thats why i reached out to her to offer her a position. Before we knew anything about the gross violations of ethics and beity during her white house tenure. Anything from the white house on this . Reporter white house officials still continue to blast omarosa as a disloyal and gruntled former employees whos now trying to profit off her time in the white house, but for better or worse, she seized control of the news cycle, and seized control of the president s attention. Now you have New York Times reporting she could have as many as 200 secretly reporting of tapes. Our reporting seems to back that up. You have some white house officials describing the kind of psychological warfare that gripped some of the Hillary Clinton staffers in the final months of the campaign when day after day they were seeing hacked emails from john bo deatha bei podesta being leaked by wiki leaks. What about the report that donald trump wants her arrested. Are you concerned at all about being arrested . Well, what mr. Nixon i mean, mr. Trump does will be brought to light. Every action he takes against me jeopardizes him and his presidency. I think you should watch his behavior and how hes unraveling. I dont have any fear. I am not going anywhere. Im not going to be bullied, im not intimidated. Donald trump has met his match. There any basis for her being arrested . Reporter probably not. Legal efforts we have consulted say you would have to go through legal acrobatics to turn what she did into a crime. Certainly she brought some safety and ethical protocols, but as far as breaking the rules, she didnt break the law. D. C. Has a oneparty consent law. We have seen the Trump Campaign try to wipe her out financially, given that she signed an nda, a nondisclosure agreement with the campaign. And they view that as an egregious violation of that agreement. And it was told that trump fired the chief white house usher in part because he shot she mishandled the transportation of his tanning bed. Angela reed, when she was fired, she was the first woman and second africanamerican to ever hold that position. That job wild overseeing the entire permanent staff of the residence side of the white house. When she left, she wouldnt give any public comment. She said ill leave it to the white house. Sarah sanders said they left on good terms and it was all part of a change of administration, the president wanted to see a change there, but shaking up the permanent staff is fairly rare. There have only been like nine chief ushers in the 20th century. Wee left at the mom with what omarosa says and what the white house says around the time of her departure. Geoff, donald trump tweeted about the military parade blaming local d. C. Politicians for the high cost. Whats the latest . Reporter he tried to make the point that Muriel Bowzer was trying to skim money off the top. She had, yeah, im mayor of washington, d. C. , the local politics who finally got through to the reality star in the white house with the realities of parades events, demonstrations in the trump america. And you see the parenthetical there of 21. 6 million. When the president says d. C. Is poorly run, thats not true. D. C. Is on budge jet with a fairly stellar bond rating. Ali . Thanks a million, Geoff Bennett at the white house for us. The lira fell fell today. But its not just turkey thats in trouble. It may be all of us. The lira slide could cause a Global Financial crisis. Lets take a look at how we got here. The lira is falling thanks in part to a dispute with the United States. Turkey is holden an american pastor prisoner, and the Trump Administration slapped on sanctions, but the company is also dependent on foreign investment. Investors are concerned by erdogans monetary policy. Turkey is one of the socalled fragile five economies, include india, brazil, indonesia and south africa. They earned their tiled during the Recovery Period that has followed the great recession, basically over the last ten years. Like turkey, these four other countries are heavily dependent on foreign investment. A lot of the Economic Growth comes from people investing from the outside. If one of them takes a hit. Investors could decide to pull money out of all of them. And the result of that, because were so interconnected, could be a Global Economic crisis. Weve seen rapid and coordinated Economic Growth in emerging markets over the last ten years of economic recovery. Many investors are see no end in sight until now. The lira has lost almost 40 . Its hard to tell, because the currency has been relatively stable. You can see its slowly been declining, but take a look. Its lost almost 40 against the dollar. This may be the could nairia in the coal mine for investors. Here as President Trump on turkey a moment ago. Turkey has been a problem for a long time. They have not acted as a friend. Well see what happens. They have a wonderful christian poster. Hes a wonderful man, poster brunson. They made up this phony charge that hes a spy, and hes not a spy. All right. Joining mess now is chief foreign correspond richard engel. The stuff we are talking about in turkey, how much of it has to do with an internal turkish economic crisis versus these u. S. Sanctions . Reporter well, i think theyre part of the same problem here. Over the last couple years, theres been a real crisis of confidence in the turkish economy. People have watched as the president erdogan has become increasingly more authoritarian, increasingly a oneman show in this country. That has spooked many investors. As hes grown more and more authoritarian, you mentioned that the dollar versus the lira, that the lira has declined 40 over the last year. This is not a new problem. This is a problem thats been growing as people have been watching the march toward authoritarian rule, but then when this specific crisis over the pastor really jumped to the forefront over the last two weeks, when the u. S. Imposed sanctions and started tweeting about it almost every day with a member of the Trump Administration coming out in favor of the pastor, say that turkey needs to be punished, that exposed this very deep problem, and sent the countrys economy into a tailspin and spooked many people who are already been worried about the underlying problems in turkey and has created the crisis were in now. Its not just the currency. Were now seeing prices start to rise. Eggs, cheese, tomatoes, all up 20, 30, 40, in some cases 100 . So im going to ask you a similar question. Whats the greater danger here . A turkish economic collapse or the damage being done to u. S. tissue irk relations. While the president says turkey has been bad for us for a long time, they are a major ally of the United States and a major nato force. While this crisis over the pastor has been spilling out into international headlines, dominating all of the headlines in turkey, erdogan is increasingly lashing out at the United States of mixing the economy with politics, not being sensitive to the circumstances and turkey is openly saying it looks to seem alliances. There have been certainly means in which Officials Say they need to rethink their relationships. Its not that the Nato Alliance is going to collapse, but it is a serious strain on this very important relationship. Richard, thanks for your great reporting. Survivors are now sharing their stories in a video released by the Pennsylvania Attorney general and on msnbc. I was groomed. Starting young. The day i met him, i was around 18 months old. They targeted me because i was fatherless. When you have the priest touching you every day, you know, thats a hard memory to have. Who would have believed me . A priest . In 1948 or 47, would abuse you . Would do that . Never heard of such a thing. Because they covered it up. It doesnt ever go away. It has an effect on you for the rest of your life. They have to be accountable, the church, for what they did. I had no desire to have children. None, because of this. Its very lonely. Especially when its your word against gods. How do people find their way after Something Like this . Being raised catholic, although im not practicing, i would say now is the time you have to dig deep into your faith. Into your faith, not the churchs faith. Into your faith, into your heart. What do you want people to know about what happened to you . I know its so hard to talk about. What would you share with our viewers . I would like them to know i have lived for the last 36 years in a state of turmoil. Its hard for me to say this, although ive been speaking it, that ive basically emotionally abused my wife and children due to my trauma. Im thrilled that since i came out publicly, the people that im connected to now, the stories that were sharing, the people that are reaching out to me from literally around the world, this helps us all immensely. We have all been alone for so long. Its a major victory for all survivors, all over the world. Were all excited. I dont know what is more shocking than this report. Are you angry . What do you feel . Im incredibly angry. Ive been fighting for legislation in pennsylvania for 2 1 2 years since i became public. 30 of the names are still redacted. We dont know who they are, where they are, which diocese, are they in pennsylvania . The Senate Leadership in pennsylvania refuses to bring mark rozzis bill to a vote. Why . This is against the law. Senator joe scarnati, Senate Pro Tem of pennsylvania, his spokesperson a few weeks ago mentioned that mark rozzis common sense legislation, a lookback window giving people like me who timed out at 15 the reason to come out, would unfairly target and bankrupt the church. Thats where the Senate Leadership of pennsylvania is. So does the churchs response give you any favorite . No. Its the same old response. Its the same you know, the pope didnt tell us who the 30 names are in the redacted report. The attorney general wants to tell us who the names are, hes dying to tell us who the names are and where they are, in whose neighborhoods theyre in, whose children theyre around. But hes forbidden, because the lobbyists and the people that pay for the churchs bills, the people that pay these lobbyists and these law firms, where successful at getting them redacted and theyre successful at getting legislation squashed down in the republicanheld senate. In australia, a new law taking effect in october will require priests who here confessions about child abuse to report the crime to police. One bishop told the guardian newspaper, politicians cant change the can change the law but cant change the nature of the confessional. Basically theyre saying they wont follow the law. They dont follow the law. They rape children. Its against the law to rape children. They dont care about our laws. They care about canon laws. And they control our laws. They dont follow our laws. They dont care about our laws. But they control our laws. Will this change . Yeah, its going to change. This is changing. You know, this time is changing. You know, there are 30 pedophiles running around in very high positions in pennsylvania or outside of pennsylvania. You dont get 30 names redacted out of a Supreme Court ruling unless youre powerful, unless youve got some kind of pull.
