Fixed it. Im pissed. Its my daughter im not going to see again. Woke up to the news that my best friend was gone. I dont understand why i can still go in a store and buy a weapon of war. An ar. You have the ability to make a difference and save lives today. Please dont waste this. The president will meet with state and local officials today to get their ideas on how to tackle the crisis of mass shootings. If you had a teacher who was adept at firearms, they could very well end the attack very quickly. Am i supposed to have a vest . Am i supposed to strap it to my leg . I dont support it. I answer that as much as a father as a senator. The notion that my kids are going to school with teachers that are armed with a weapon is not something that, quite frankly, im comfortable with. Just tweeted, i never said, give teachers guns. I understand youre standing up for the nra, and i understand thats what youre supposed to do. You just told this group of people that you are standing up for them. Youre not standing up for them until you say senator rubio, can you tell me right you that you will not accept a single donation from the nra . That is the wrong way to look. First of all, the answer is people buy into my agenda. 18yearolds should never have a rifle. An 18yearold kid should not have a rifle. 18yearold kid, theyre not adults yet. Theyre in high school. These kids should not have a rifle. Bump stocks should be illegal. They should be outlawed forever. Automatic rifles should be outlawed forever. Anybody who says different, i dont know about other people, but were calling bs on that. Many in legacy media love mass shootings. You guys love it. Any American School that needs immediate professional consultation and help with organizing and defining these solutions should call the National Rifle Association School shield program. We shouldnt put in place a process that makes it so easy, through some binterpretation, t get these weapons. No, we dont love covering it. We dont love sharing the news that right now, one of the heros of the Parkland High School shooting, is being laid to rest. Aaron feis was a coach and Security Guard at the school. He pushed kids to safety, shielding some with his own body, as the shooting attackeat. Family and friends are gathering at the church by the glades in Coral Springs, florida, to honor him right now. It has been eight days since the School Shooting in parkland, florida, and theres still been no legislative action on gun control. Lets talk a little about this. As the country grapples with the aftermath of the shooting, the president held a listening session in the dining room. He heard from parents and Students Affected by the violence at Stoneman Douglas. He advocated for Arming Teachers. Its called concealed carry. It only works where you have people very adept at using firearms, of which you have many, and it would be teachers and coaches. Lets take a look at what the president is proposing and the larger argument of more guns means more safety. In a series of tweets, starting with one of these, defending the idea this morning, the president said, 20 of teachers, a lot, would be able to immediately fire back if a savage ssicko cae to a school with bad intentions. If a potential shooter knows the school has talented teachers and weapons who will be instantly shooting, the sicko will never attack the school. Lets look at the 20 number the president is talking about. According to the department of the education, there are more than 3. 5 million elementary and secondary schoolteachers in the United States. The bureau of labor statistics lists more than 200,000 School Coaching jobs. They dont break it down by levels. Lets assume the majority are school coaches, with more than 98,000 Public Schools alone. Itd be an average of eight armed teachers per school. 18 states allow teachers to carry guns in schools. Most of them require some kind of authorization from school officials. Others have different requirements, like a conceal ee carry permit or some other bar to meet. Thats what were talking about. I want to put the numbers out there. That is said without judgment. It is giving us a sense of what were talking about. I tweeted out this morning to say, any of you out there who are teachers, tell me what you think of this idea. The Response Rate is 100 against the idea of Arming Teachers, for valid reasons, stephanie. Teaching is a very serious profession. They are underpaid. We are short of them. Teachers want to teach. Security is a different job. Law enforcement is a different job. It is not to denigrate any of them, but it is a different job. It is like me telling you, you have to come in with a gun to go to work. Youre a journalist. While sharing that, i keep looking at the classroom. That is a grade school classroom, probably kindergarten or first grade classroom. Right. Of all the things a as a mom i have a daughter who is 4 years old in prekindergarten. There are lots of things i think about when i walk into the classroom. It is a responsibility for the teachers who man 14, 15, 25 kids. Having a gun on them should not be one of their responsibilities. Joining us now is one of those heros. Journalism and english teacher at Stoneman Douglas high school, melissa falkowski. During the shooting, she hid 19 students in her classroom closet. No doubt, this woman saved lives. Melissa, thank you so much for joining us. I am so sorry for what you are going through. Thank you. What are your thoughts on Arming Teachers . I think the idea is ridiculous. I have problems with it on a lot of levels. First, i dont think it would have helped in our particular situation. You know, he was wearing full body armor and reinforced helmet, from what i understand. Youre asking a teacher to bring a handgun, which is what most concealed carry is talking about, you know, to face off against somebody who is using an ar15. So i think thats just unrealistic and not a fair fight. You know, i have problems with it on other levels. Where is it being kept . What happens if a student gets their hands on it . What happens if one of the teachers that is trained ends up being disgruntled . So, i just i think it brings in more problems, you know, to the arena than it solves. I think it is a distraction. We shouldnt be treating our schools like theyre military installments, you know, like our teachers are Police Officers. I mean, i guess my question to President Trump would be, are teachers going to be paid Like Police Officers . Are they going to be paid as the military are . We are not. Correct. Because we are not. I dont know i dont think i know any teachers that would feel comfortable carrying a weapon in their classroom. These are places where students are supposed to come and feel like theyre at home when theyre outside their home. How much at home can you feel if you know your teacher may or may not be carrying a weapon in the classroom . So, i have problems with it on a lot of levels. Youre going to be returning to that classroom tomorrow. What are you expecting to experience, being back there . I mean, to what we said earlier, you had your students hiding in a closet. I actually just came from school. I actually just was standing in my classroom not 15 minutes ago. I went into the closet. You know, i was expecting to feel like a rush of emotions, but i dont those two hours, you know, while they were terrifying and terrible, like, they dont erase, you know, three years of memories that i have in that room with my students. I dont feel like i can let that experience take that from me. It felt very much like it does on any other day, just a little bit more out of sorts than normal. Let me just talk to you about what the head of the nra said just a short time ago about schools. Separately from Arming Teachers, i want your view on what he said about schools. Lets listen. Okay. In every community in america, school districts, ptas, teachers unions, local law enforcement, moms and dads, they all must come together to implement the very best strategy to harden their schools, including effective, trained, Armed Security that will absolutely protect every innocent child in this country. Melissa, i know your experience is different in parkland. There are some schools in this country, unfortunately, where there are metal detecters and armed police regularly around, very visibly. What is your and i dont mean this as criticism of the nra, i want to ask you, what do you think about hardening schools as soft targets . Parents drop their kids off at school, kids are bused to school, and they want to feel that that is the several hours in the day in which their kids are the safest. Do we have to think about hardening schools . I mean, i think that schools around the nation have already taken those steps. I mean, we put Broward County means ago with fences around the schools. Gates are locked, so there is one entry point. You have to show your id. They scan your drivers license. We have an armed officer on campus. We have a bso campus that is fulltime on campus. I think schools have taken that step. I just dont think you can plan for every single eventuality. There are a lot of people who say, oh, well, if they want to, you know, get in, theyre going to get in. I think on some level, thats true, but i think we have to make it harder for them. I dont think that the solution to that is necessarily hardening the schools even further. I think that we have to look at, you know we have to look at individuals who should not have weapons, and we have to look at the weapons themselves. What is the necessity of an ar15 and these other assault rifles . Why do we need them . If people have hunting rifles and they have handguns, what is the necessity of military grade, you know, weapons, you know, in the hands of regular, everyday civilians . I dont think anyone, you know, on the other side of this argume argument, has addressed what you might actually use that for in real life. Yup. So but for some reason, thats not the topic of conversation. Its everything else. No. Its Mental Health, school hardening. Right. The conversation continues to pivot. You know, first, its, we shouldnt talk about it because people need to grieve. Then it was Mental Health. Then it was that the kids were cry skisis actors, which is so absolutely ridiculous. I see many of these students every day and are students ive taught over the last, you know, few years. So the conversation continues to pivot. I think that the purpose of that is distraction. I dont, you know i honestly dont think that the American People are going to be fooled by that. They want to have the conversation about tougher gun laws. Its time to have the conversation. Now is the time. The kids righthand tuarent go go. After other shootings, we often here from leaders, its not the right time. These people need to grieve. You, your colleagues and your students, have stood up and said, absolutely not. This is the time. You are leading this charge to discuss this. As we mentioned earlier, you were in your classroom 15 minutes ago. Youre going to be back in that classroom with your students. Have you spoken to any of those students over the last week . What are you expecting your conversation to be with them tomorrow . I mean, im not going back tomorrow. I know there are some teachers that are. There are a lot of teachers who are not ready yet, and im going to be joining them off campus somewhere to have breakfast and be with them. Im not planning to return until monday and start making plans about what the week is going to hold. I use an app like a lot of other teachers called remind, that allows me to communicate with students outside of School Without us having each others phone numbers. Theyve been sending me messages, and ive been sending them messages over the last days. I dont know theyre all ready to come back, but i think were ready to be together. I think it is approaching the time where the kids need to be with teachers. We need to have the conversations about how they feel and what we can do to best help them move on. I think a lot of kids, especially the ones that were not specifically in the building, they feel like this fight, you know, theyve started, that this is what they can do. Give voice to the people who arent ready to talk. Give voice to the people who no longer have a voice. Take that and turn it into change. Thats how theyre dealing with their grief. I think it is amazing. Our kids have always been amazing at msd. I think this is a testament to that. Thank you so much, melissa. Thank you to you. Thank you to all of you who are having a voice for those who cant speak anymore. Melissa falkowski is a journalism major. You and i were together in las vegas. I was at sandy hook. I hate this more than anything i do in my job. When i get a call to go to a mass shooting, it is the saddest time of my life. Theres all gross things that have been suggested this morning, but to suggest that we enjoy this, that anybody enjoys this, there are dead children. It is a terrible approach. But nothing is grosser than going after these kids. I know you and i talked about it a lot yesterday. Yes. Crisis actors. I continue to have my mind blown with how articulate and how passionate these teachers and these students are. Are we assuming that the classic american teenager just plays video games and, you know, cant complete a full sentence . Thinking things through. When i saw the kids last night in the town hall, over the last week, and teachers like melissa, im just blown away with their power, their strength, their vision and their commitment. The nra is not just attacking teachers or students, its attacking the fbi. Our Extraordinary People who protect us every day. The same issue. People who work really hard and have a specific job to do. At the cpac conference this morning, well have a response from a former fbi agent. Were going to have much more on gun control all hour. Specifically, how President Trump is entering the debate. Remember, hes said a lot of things, and weve even heard from the students. Talk is cheap. Whats your action plan going to be . This is my son, daniel. He was 7 years old when he was shot to death in his first grade classroom at sandy hook elementary school. Schoolteachers have more than enough responsibilities right now, than to have to have the awesome responsibility of lethal force to take a life. vo new tidy cats free clean unscented. And i heard that my cousins so, wifes sisters husband was a lawyer, so i called him. But he never called me back if your cousins wifes sisters husband isnt a lawyer, call legalzoom and well connect you with an attorney. Legalzoom. Where life meets legal. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. This morning, the head of the nra, la pierre, emerged for the First Time Since last weeks School Shooting. He took the stage at the conservative conference, or cpac, in the last hour. He appeared alongside the nras spokesperson, dana lash, who criticized democrats, the media and the fbi. Many in legacy media love mass shootings. You guys love it. Im not saying that you love the tragedy, but i am saying that you love the ratings. Crying white mothers are ratings gold. For those at the fbi who dropped the ball eight separate times with catastrophic consequences, you know, james comey, when he wasnt busy taking directions from Loretta Lynch as to what call Hillary Clintons investigation or writing his memoirs, he said they made a mistake. Maybe if you politicized your agency less and did your job more, we wouldnt have these problems. We are not responsible for this tragedy. It is not our job to follow up on red flags. It is not our job to make sure that states are reporting to the background check system. Hey, dana, you know what this crying white mother gets upset about . Automatic rifle sales shooting up right after mass shootings. That makes me cry. Lets bring in a retired fbi agent. He was in the fbi ten years. In the nypd eight years. Marine corps four years. This is a man who truly serves our country. Welcome to the man who is apparently to blame for these shootings. The nra has taken the issue of the fact that it seems somebody reported this shooter in florida to the fbi and, somehow, it didnt get followed up on. If it is true, it is something that has to be looked into. But they have now changed this into a rallying cry about, somehow, its the fbis problem. They dont keep us safe. Its teachers who should be armed. Its Mental Health. It may be all of the above, but its never guns. No. The common denominator in all of these mass shootings, whether its connecticut, whether its this one, orlando, san bernardino, las vegas, is assault weapons. Particularly, the ar15. Right. That conversation needs to come up. That conversation has been should have come up years ago. Thats the conversation thats been playing and that these children now, these young americans, are bringing to adult politicians attention. Whats your response to dana . If dana was sitting here looking you in the eye, just like we watched her at the podium, blaming the fbi, what would you say to her if. Shame on you, dana. Shame on you for putting down first responders, putting down agents that lay down their lives to protect other lives, while youre sitting there in your pulpit, preaching how ar15s are the answer. How we should arm teachers, other children and just have everybody shoot at each other to protect lives. The common denominator are the ar15s. They are the assault weapons. We need to get rid of them. Were thinking about the fact that there are some places in the world with more guns per capita than the United States. Yemen would be the example. Everybody is actually shooting at each other. Yemen. You hear that . Yemen. The relevance of you being in the nypd and the fbi is to give us a sense of how police, how law enforcement, generally look at the idea of guns. Our experience is that sheriffs and Police Chiefs subscribe to some measure of reasonable control on the sale and use of guns. Absolutely. Most Police Officers dont want guns on the street. We have to encounter people day in and day out, and we dont want them carrying a firearm. Plain and simple as that. Theres a right now, there is a law that is being passed that would enable everybody that has a legal conceal weapon anywhere in the 50 states to carry it anywhere else in the 50 states. Here in new york, california and other places, we have very tough gun control. Correct. We have been able to successfully lower crime, violent crime, by epic numbers in the last couple decades. Jim oneil, the police chief, said if it were to pass, itd be disastrous for new york city. Guns would flow into the city at the rate the nypd, Biggest Police force, couldnt handle. Absolutely right. We have 40,000 Police Officers in the city of new york that have to confront eve, every day numerous people. Whether it is asking for directions or a routine car stop. They have to worry about thousands of firearms going to be in the city of new york. Firearms are the common denominator here. Certainly, assault weapons are something we need to take off the table. Manny, thank you so much. Thank you. For serving new york and this country. Thank you. Manny gomez, former fbi, nypd and marine. Lets highlight what President Trump said this morning about the nra on twitter. Ready for this . What many people dont understand or dont want to understand is that wayne, chris and the folks who work so hard at the nra are great people and Great American patriots. They love our country and will do the right thing. Make America Great again, exclamation point. Mr. President , thats not what i dont understand. What i dont understand is that the president of the United States makes a blanket statement about the nra, saying that they are great people. Just like the president of the United States said the people there were some very fine people in charlottesville, yet the very same president has referred to black athletes as sons of bitches, and as people from developing countries, those developing countries, as sholes. That, my president , is what i dont understand. The great people in this one are these heros, the first responders, the kids and the coaches who lost their lives, the teachers and those kids and their teachers and their families who are fighting out to say, this doesnt happen again. Just minute s away, at the white house, the president is set to meet with officials on school safety, believe it or not, at 11 30 eastern time. Well bring that to you when we have it. Yesterday, President Trump hosted shooting victims for a listening session. It was emotional. It was extraordinary. Next, were going to speak with parkland shooting survivor sam who texted his younger brother while they were both trapped in the school. I turned 18 the day after. Woke up to the news that my best friend was zone. I dont understand why i could still go in a store and buy a weapon of war. This is food made to sit down for. Slow down for. Put the phone away, and use a knife and fork for. And with panera catering, its food worth sharing. Panera. Food as it should be. Looking for a hotel that fits. Its food wowhoooo. Ring. Your budget . More savings on Car Insurance . Aha. And an awardwinning mobile app. That is more. Oh, theres more. Mobile id cards, emergency roadside service. More technology. I can even add a new driver. Right from her phone geico. Expect great savings and a whole lot more. Welcome back to velshi ruhle. President trump is promising to take action after an extraordinary and emotional day at the white house. Students, parents and teachers shared their heartbreaking stories about gun violence during a listening session with the president. How many children have to get shot . It stops here with this administration and me. Im not going to sleep until its fixed. We cant forget about it. These all the School Shootings, it doesnt make sense. Fix it. Should have been one School Shooting, and we should have fixed it. Im pissed. Because its my daughter im not going to see again. Shes not here. Shes not here. Shes in king david, whatever it is, cemetery. Thats where i go to see my kid now. Im never going to see my kid again. I want you all to know that. Never, ever will i see my kid. Thats how i want it to sink in. Its eternity. My beautiful daughter, im never going to see again. I was on the second floor in that building. Texting my mom, texting my dad, texting three of my brothers, that i was never going to see them again. I turned 18 the day after. Woke up to the news that my best friend was gone. And i dont understand why i can still go in a store and buy a weapon of war. How do we not stop this after columbine, after sandy hook . Im sitting with a mother that lost her son. Its still happening. That was sam zeif, a survivor of the parkland School Shooting. His 14yearold brother, matthew, was also inside the school, hiding inside a classroom directly above him. Texts between them from that day have gone viral. We want to share them with you. Sam texted, are you okay . Hopefully. Just know i love you. I love you, too. Forever. Youre the best brother. Were going to get out of here. I promise. Sam . Yes . Are the cops here . My teacher died. Yes. Hes sitting in the doorway. I dont know. Im on the third floor. You think im okay . Dont do anything. Dont do anything. You understand, matthew . Please answer me. Are you okay . Yes. Yes. Just stay hidden, please. Yo, yo, are you okay, brother . Yes. You . Yes. Matthew, im out of the building. Have you met the cops yet . We want to bring that student in. Sam zeif, a senior at marjory Stoneman Douglas high school and his father, doug zeif. Sam, we heard what you were talking about yesterday with the president. Do you get some sense that you were heard and that youve been heard in this whole matter . Is there some sense that there will be some work to fix what happened last week . Well, i know i was heard because i saw it on trumps little card, i hear you, but i dont think i was felt by him. Honestly, im confident, seeing the impact that my group and i and the other people at the white house have made since yesterday, gives me a lot of confidence in us. A lot more than i had the day before. You must be making an impact because theyre calling you and some of your colleagues crisis actors. Theyre saying that you are manipulated by the left and the media. This morning, the terminology used by the nra was socialists. Doug, what do you say about that . Seeing what your family has experienced in the last week, your son speaking out in such an articulate manner, what do you think of the things being said about him and the other students . Well, we are manipulated. Were manipulated by grief and despair. Its unfathomable to me that people can consider this something that didnt happen or didnt occur, or occurred for the wrong reasons, for that matter. There are people out there right now that say that sandy hook never occurred. It is unfathomable, unimaginable, that decent human beings can have a belief that Mental Health played a role in this, or that background checks, yes, they all played a little role in this. But the truth of the matter is, Mental Health only matters for the families grieving the loss of their children, the loss of their spouse, the loss of their brother, sister and fiance, and the loss of their parent. Thats where Mental Health matters. This is strictly a sensible gun control matter that needs to be addressed. Im all for the second amendment. I know sam is, as well. But i guarantee you, our Founding Fathers never, ever imagined that it would come to this. They would be rolling over in their graves, god bless them, if they knew what was occurring in the United States right now. Sensible gun control. Semiautomatic weapons off the streets. High capacity magazines off the streets. Thats a step. The other step is, of course, safe schools. We need that tomorrow. We need that so sam can go back to school and his classmates and teachers on tuesday and be safe and not have to look over their shoulders. What does safe schools mean to you . At the meeting, the president suggested that some teachers, teachers that have gun training, should possibly carry guns in school. Sam . Well oh, sorry. Ive said earlier, it is absurd, that teachers should have to be questioned whether they should take the responsibility of holding a firearm during class, while having to mold young lives and mentor and love them. My teacher was in front of me the whole time, protecting me, because she loved me. Do you think that they deserve to feel that, at any time, theyll have to kill one of their students, a shootout in our classroom . What happens if they think a student is going to do something, but they dont really know, and they want to take the first step . Then teachers are killing kids because theyre scared. Sam, i want to ask you, because i read your texts the day after the shooting on television. I read them again now. You and your brother were as close as we ever get to someone who thinks they were going to die in that shootout. That has got to have been a lifechanging experience. In the moment, in addition to being scared for your life, you were scared for your brothers life. You said things like, you know, you guys are going to be better to each other, and im sure youre great to each other anyway, with the love we saw in the texts, but it is important for americans to understand. Youre not talking about this from some academic ivory tower. You thought you or your brother was going to die. Thats right. After he told me his teacher was dead, thats all he told me. I didnt know if there was someone in a classroom or what. The teacher was stuck in the doorway. There was 20 to 30 14yearold children with their teacher dead in the doorway and a madman walking around. Doug, youre sending your boys back to school next week. Do you feel safe . Not entirely yet. Were going to be looking over them. I know the community of parkland, sheriff scott israel, everybody is coming together to guarantee their safety. Id imagine that nobody is going to go back into that building. That building needs to be torn down, in my opinion, and replaced with whatever for the moment. But, look, sam is getting ready to graduate. A lot of these kids are. Somehow, they need to find a place for this. You can never put it aside, but find a real place for it. They still need no continue on with their lives and pearsevere in honor of the people who have fallen and given their lives so sam can be here to talk to you, and also to make a difference in our society. Because we need it to be different. The adults have failed our children. We have failed them. Yeah. Were really impressed by the job that these kids are doing in representing those who dont have a voice anymore, including sam, your best friend, 17yearold joaquin oliver. Tell us about joaquin. Im sorry. I didnt hear that. Joaquin oliver. Tell us about him. I mean, as you can see, he was one of the most impactful people ive known. He knew how to lead. He knew how to light up a room. He didnt know how to dance, but he would still do it all the time. He was amazing at basketball. You know, recently, we started playing at the park for him and luke. Im not that good at basketball, but i am playing with this kid in me. I am in amazement, literally. Ive never played like i have after this. Its unreal. Maybe its the hair. Maybe its his name on the back of my jersey. Thats the impact that he had on my life. The strength that he left me with, ill have forever. Thats why im here. Thats why i came to d. C. Without parents. My father was so great to come here. He asked if i wanted him to come, and i said, no, i got it. I have joaquin with me. Thank you for keeping him alive in this battle. New details on the despicable trend of online hoaxes involving the florida School Shooting survivors. Social Media Companies are beginning to respond. Heres the question, is it enough . Yesterday, a search for david hoggs name on youtube returned hoax videos, calling the young man a, quote, crisis actor. Youtube offered its sympathy to the survivors and said, quote, any video flagged to us that violates this policy is reviewed and then removed. Flagged to us. Meaning, outsiders have to say, hey, youtube, this is garbage. Many of the accounts creating those videos are still active. Some of them are even verified. Like alex jones conspiracy site, infowars. Some of the hoax videos continue to circulate. This morning on facebook, a search for david hoggs name brings up a number of videos still pushing this fake nonsense narrative. In response, facebook head of content policy said in a statement, quote, images that attack victims of last weeks tragedy in florida are abhorrent. We are removing this content from facebook. Heres the thing, plenty of that content is still up. Those accounts are still active. On twitter, videos and links pushing the hoax narrative went viral. In response, twitter condemned the content, saying, we are taking action on any content that violates our terms of service. Question is, should you review what your terms of service are . Again, many of the accounts, and even the content, is still active and pushing lies that are trying to minimize these students that were affected by last weeks tragedy. The major social platforms are trying to combat this dangerous fake news, but without taking real action, policy action, the accounts pushing these videos and its links, its like cutting the stem of a weed but leaving the roots in tact. Any good gardner will tell you, it is no way to solve a problem. Editor for social media, kurt wagner. Yesterday, we went over these. Im really stymied about this. We study fake news all the time here. We probably study it more than any other topic. How do you stop this nonsense while still respecting the second amendment, while not getting involved in censorship, while not being able to wield some sword about, i dont want your stuff out there because i dont agree with it . These are lies. These are falsehoods. How do we deal with this . Youre asking the question that all of these companies are obviously grappling with. Theres no easy way around it because these terms of service for all the companies dont kick people off for saying things that are inaccurate, right . If i go on facebook and say, the sky is red, my account is not going to be deleted. Whats happening is, these lies are impacting the lives of other people, so the companies are saying, okay, well, we can categorize this as bullying or harassment. Thats how were going to go ahead and do this. The problem is, lying isnt against the rules. Its not against the law either. Theyre trying to figure out how to handle that. Doesnt the lie exist how these companies are categorizing themselves . When they say, when the content is flagged to us, flagged by outsiders saying, this is inappropriate. How can the companies possibly say that they are not content companies . It is where millions of people get their news. If you talked to the Marketing Team at facebook or twitter, if you talked to ad sales, theyre competing for the same advertising dollars that news organizations are. That we are, yeah. How can they possibly say, we dont have to review this . We have to. I dont have the freedom to say, nbc news, im going to upload any video i want and throw it on your website. Right. I agree with you. I think it is very clear to me that, at this point, facebook is a media company. If Facebook Says it is a media company, all of a sudden, it is open to more regulation. It is responsible for the fact that its users are uploading things that are hurtful or misinformation or harassment, abuse, whatever it may be. If it argues it is a platform, it can take that down when it is presented and when it is flagged by other users, but it doesnt bear the responsibility an msnbc or recode would, because were Media Companies responsible for what we put on. That is why theyre hesitant to come out and say, yes, we are Media Companies. Why are we putting it in their hands . Why do they get to decide, well, it depends on how were categorizing ourselves . When does the government say, lets hook up and acknowledge youre media. Whether it is social media, youre media. Lets go. Time for regulation. I think this is an example of something that has been slowly happening over the last couple years. Obviously, in the last 18 obvio 18 months has mitt a dramatic crescendo. People have been posting conspiracy theorys on the internet for years. They have been posting them on facebook for a long time. But only really in the last 18 months have we seen the dramatic impact of those conspiracy theories both with the election and run up to the 2016 location and now with parkland. If you are a utility like a lot of people tell you we dont regulate who gets electricity, that is the case with the internet. But when were talking about social media sites like twitter, youtube and facebook, that is different, right . Using the internet, info wars can have the info wars website. But it is info wars linking itself inside twitter, twitter has to take ownership of that. I dont disagree, but that is the whole argument about platform against media. If you are a platform, you say we support information regardless where it is coming from. Were simply the platform for distributing it. Media could think otherwise. Up until you now, they have been granted a free pass to say we are a platform and therefore the government wont force them to do anything. Users though, yourself, myself, are starting to get upset enough about this that they are having to at least ask that question and rethink it. And im wondering whether it will be the users who solve this problem in the end. Whether sensible people will just say i cant trust what i see on twitter, i cant trust what i see on facebook. I will only trust that friends are posting pictures of each other and saying happy birthday, but i will not consume news from social media because i cant trust it. Users can vote, if you will, with their time spent, right . If they feel that facebook is not living up to what facebook should be living up to, dont spend time on facebook. Same with advertisers. Dont spend money on facebook. That is the kind of change that up until now really hasnt actually happened. People love to complain, but everyone still continues to go to facebook and as a result the business is going great. So until people actually change their behavior, there is not a ton of incentives for these companies to dramatically change the way they are categorizing themselves. That is a good point. Kurt wagner, thanks very much. A big problem. Id love people to say just dont get your news from there and im getting to the point that i cant trust what i see on social media. Yes, but it is the way youre deep in the News Business and it is how we live our lives. All right. Right now, look up at your screen. You are looking at the funeral of aaron buts ofeis. He was a coach, he pushed kids to safety when the gunman came. He shielded some with his own body as the shooter attacked. Family and friends are gathered at the church in Coral Springs to honor him right now. The sheriff of Broward County, scott israel, speaking. He talked about his truck all the time. I used to say when are you going to get a new vehicle. It was never going to happen. Feis was dedicated to that truck. But lets talk for a second, church, lets talk about february 14th. Bible tells us isaiah 6 8 the lords talking to isaiah, and he says to isaiah, whom shall i send. And isaiah says here i am, send me. That is who aaron feis was. When this massacre, when this detestable killer entered on to the premises of this great high school, everybodys world was changed forever. I remember bret calling me while i was on the scene, how is coach feis . I dont know, i havent seen him. And i remember giving bret the devastating news and calling blake and telling him. Devastating. But i remember saying this before i knew any of the stories, if anybody knew feis knows where im coming from, before you even heard how he died, you knew he died putting himself in harms way to save others. That is who he was. Running towards danger while others were correctly running away from danger. Feis had no gun, no rifle, and yet you ran toward helping students. He was just such a great individu individual. To the Douglas High School Football Players who will come back this year and be seniors, juniors, sophomores, incoming freshmen, i can assure you there will be a time at halftime or the Fourth Quarter where coach may will be ripping into you rightfully so. Youll be getting beat. Your man will be beating you, the other team will be beating you. But youre going to know that you have the ability to come out in that second half, second half of a football game, second half of life. And be victorious and overcome what is in front of you. And i tell you this, Football Players, you think of aaron feis and if that is not enough to motivate you yto do what you ned to do and honor feis by playing hard, i can tell you this, feis wanted to win like everybody else, athletes go to win. But feis wasnt really about wins. He was about getting guys graduating, getting to college, being a good person, a good citizen. Feis wanted good citizens over good Football Players and you know im telling the truth. That is how you honor feiment is, biby coming back in the Fourth Quarter, when it is not a blue sky flat sea day, when it is turbulent times, step up for feis. He would have wanted that. Feis gets to heaven, meets the lord, i can tell you this, i can tell you two things. There is a lot of athletes up there doing up downs, they never thought they would be doing that. And when feis was brought home by the lord, i can tell you this, church, the lord stared feis directly in the face and he had two words to say to him. Well done. Well done. [ applause ] wow. That was scott israel. He is the sheriff of Broward County. He is a very outspoken voice. People in florida know about scott israel, but they will know a lot more about him and i suspect scott israel may be called upon for Higher Office in florida. But what he just said about how when the lord meets aaron feis in heaven, he will say well done, you saw the cartoon. I dont know if we have it because i didnt know he was going to say this, but there was a cartoon drawn the other day about aaron feis going to heaven and there being a crowd of children and people because he had defended these children, and a child taking him by the hand and saying coach feis, weve all been looking to meet you. Is this a guy who snood fronttot of a gunman and took those bullets. Well done. Well done indeed. Time for our monumental american where we honor someone who may be deserving of more recognition. And today it is anthony borgeo suchlt. He is credited with saving lives of 20. He was shot five times while attempting to close and lock the door to a classroom where 20 other students were hiding. His best friend says when nobody else knew what to do, anthony took the initial difference and put his classmates safety ahead of his own. The sheriff visited anthony in the hospital and says he is recovering, but he has a long road ahead. Sending anthony well wishes. That right there is an extraordinary american, our monumental american. And there are so many stories like that from this shooting. Some of them did not make it, that young man who died while holding a door for his students peter wang. Not only was given military honors at his funeral, but was admitted to the United States military academy posthumously which they dont typically do, but all he ever wanted to do was going to west point. He was 15. West point admitted him after his death. And there was another teacher who passed around and at his funeral service, i want to say that he was a geography teacher and his fiance said they had talked about the possibility of Something Like this happening. And he said if they do, if i do, dont tell them i was a hero, tell them i was a jerk. Obviously he wasnt. But he was a guy well take jerks. A guy with a great sense of humor. Thank you so much for watching this pretty heavy hour of velshi ruhle. I will be back at 3 00. And we want to hear what you have on social media. Right now it is time for Andrea Mitchell. And right now on Andrea Mitchell reports, back to the base. Today President Trump calling to arm teachers and defending the nra as the nras leader attacks the parents and students who are calling for change. Socialism feeds off manipulated victims. You name the group, and they will find a way to turn them into victims. The illumination of due process is the very Gold Standard of the socialist state. We will not be gas lighted into thinking that we are responsible for a tragedy that we had nothing to do with. It is not our job to follow up on red flags. A fathers pain. One father who lost his daughter in the massacre raising his voice against the idea of giving guns to schoolteachers. It was pandemonium. People were running all over the place. You cannot have shootouts in the hallways of a school. It didnt save live, it will lead to the loss of additional s
