An explosive report from the Washington Post alleges then32yearold assistant District Attorney roo moore initiated a sexual encounter with 14yearold lee coffman. Her mother went into a courtroom and thats when he had the conversation with her. The article also includes three other women who allege moore pursued them when they were just teenagers. Their ages range from 16 to 18. Nbc news has not confirmed those accusations. Moore denies the allegations. The campaign released a statement saying, quote, it is no surprise with just over four weeks remaining in a race for the u. S. Senate with National Implications that the Democratic Party and the countrys most liberal newspaper would come up with a fabrication of this kind. This garbage is the very definition of fake news and intentional defamation. This is not the definition of fake news. If you read this wnWashington Post piece, its stunning the people theyve backed it up. These are local women in Alabama Community who do not have anything to gain. We know already that theyre getting pressure, why would you do this, we dont believe you. Its amazing. Its not like theyre some hollywood superstars that have wealth and fame behind them. The moore story is shaking up capitol hill of course. Republicans there trying to focus on a tax overhaul. Several leaders an the white house are calling for moore to step aside. Heres the thing. If the allegations are true. If these allegations are true, roy moore should step aside. If theyre true, step aside. I think people are innocent until Proven Guilty for sure but those charges are serious. Mitt romney fired back saying, quote, innocent until Proven Guilty is for criminal convictions not elections. I believe Leigh Corfman. Her account is too serious to ignore. Moore is unfit for office and should step aside. Picked her up, said im not going to come to your house, off the property, to his home in the woods. One more time. He was 32. She was 14. Thats a freshman in high school. But not all the reaction has been negative. This is what blows my mind. The Marion County gop chair in alabama david hall says, it was 40 years ago. I dont see the relevance of it. He was 32. She was supposedly 14. Shes not saying anything happened other than they kissed. We should note the statement is incorrect. The wnthe Washington Post repn one occasion he took off her clothes, touched her, and encouraged her to touch him. How come she was supposedly 14 but he was 32 . And also to say, it was only kissing . It was only kissing a child. A 14yearold. Hall went to say, by the way, i would vote for judge moore because i wouldnt want to vote for doug, he says. Im not saying i support what he did. You are saying you support what he did. Thats what a vote is. Doing this is actually better than the ultimate sin which would be voting for a democrat. This is a ridiculous story. William blocker told a correspondent, quote, there is no option to support doug jones the democratic nominee. When you do that, youre supporting the entire Democratic Party. There is an opportunity for Luther Strange to step in. An Alabama State auditor told the washington examiner, quo quote this one kills me. Take joseph and mary. Mary was a teenager and joseph was an adult carpenter. They became parents of jesus. For people of faith, why are you putting republicans who are people who are devout catholics or christians are putting them in this grotesque position . As you mentioned the reaction is pouring in. Both in capitol hill and here in alabama. As youve mentioned from some of the people youve quoted, local gop officials, many of them are standing by roy moore. The Trump Campaign chairman perry hooper also told us he just doesnt believe these allegations from these women. And thats something weve heard again and again from roy moore supporters, that they believe this is politically motivated. That the timing is suspect. You mentioned several quotes. One gop chairman told the toronto star that he doesnt believe, quote, it was forcible rape. I know that 14yearolds dont make good decisions. The gop chairman told the toronto star. Now, steve bannon in a speech yesterday at a fund raiser, you know, he called into question tthe Washington Post. And called into question that the Washington Post endorsed the so he called into question why this was the timing of these allegations. But again, as you mentioned, the post says it spoke with dozens of people in recent weeks that stand by their reporting. This courthouse behind me is actually where the main accuser told the Washington Post that she met roy moore outside of a custody hearing almost 40 years ago. We have to remind our viewers, gabe, a custody hearing where she wasnt the parent. She was the child. She was the child that he targeted. And the other thing to point out here is, again, i mentioned it earlier. The bravery of these women. Gabe is standing there in alabama reading point after point from Republican Leaders who are doubting this woman, who are saying it wasnt forcible rape. So for these women to come forward, think about how hard that is. Reporter well, weve also spoken with the Democratic Party official here. She says that it was sort of an open secret in a bit over the last couple of years, at least that was the talk, that roy moore, you know, had this sort of past. And the Washington Post reporter said that, you know, thats kind of what drove him to dig deeper into the allegations. That they were not approached by these women. They approached these women after hearing rumors around town. So certainly people here are waiting for more information to come out. We spoke with one voter who claimed a vote in a special upcoming election who said, look, i supported roy moore. But were just waiting for more of this to come out. There is a skepticism here on why this came out. Just several weeks before the special election. But certainly as you mentioned, the allegations are extremely troubling. This woman saying that she was 14 years old when this 32yearold man asked her, according to the Washington Post, to go with him to his home at least twice. And on that second time, she allegations his inappropriate sexual contact. So weve reached out to the women who were quoted in the Washington Post article through her attorney. The main accuser Leigh Corfman is refusing to talk on camera. This is not just rocking the town here in alabama but also capitol hill. You hear all those republicans on the hill coming out and ba c basically distancing themselves from roy moore very quickly. Here in alabama, though, theres a bit of a different story. He still apparently still has a lot of support here. Ali, i just were going to say goodbye to you. Well come back to you in a bit. Gabe gutierrez in alabama. Ali, this is about decency. This isnt about politics. I want to read you two tweets. This one the interview that was given, this is from a gop chairman riley sibenheimer, it said other than with being with an underajz person, he didnt really force himself. I know thats bad enough, but i dont know. If he withdraws, its five weeks to the election. That would concede it to the democrat. Say it one more time. Other than with being with an underage person. Being with an underage person is more than enough, sir. And he continues with, he doesnt believe the allegations are true, but if true he wont support him. At the same time, its not, quote, forcible rape. I know that 14yearolds dont make good decisions. This is what gabe reported on. 14yearolds are not allowed to make consent decisions about sex with people who are older than them. Thats the law. Thats why its not legal. Thats why its statutory rape when it involves a 14yearold. Now, theres no sexual intercourse alleged here, but the fact is you can never, ever say in a sexual situation that 14yearolds dont make good decisions. The law doesnt recognize the right of a 14yearold to consent to sex. End of story. Theyre 14. And hes a judge, by the way. And he was an assistant District Attorney at the time. If these things are true, he would have known. That is the law. Everybody has to know, by the w way. Ignorance of this law is not an excuse for anybody in the country. I understand the idea of getting to understand the facts before making judgments. What i dont understand are the excuses. But also, ali, to normalize it. To make a ridiculous comparison to the virgin mary and joseph is absurd. But one of the reasons others have pointed out why this is going to be an issue the evangelical vote. After the access hollywood vote that came out would that vote have collapsed at that point . But it didnt. Again, the evangelical vote would have a lot to do with family principles, morality, but it doesnt. And listen. If its a single issue vote, if getting someone like neil gorsuch is a core principle, core idea you wanted to get, you got that. Here, at some point wheres the line for our sons and daughters . All right. Lets turn to capitol hill where Garrett Haake is gathering and has been gathering reaction since this news broke yesterday afternoon. Garrett, the majority of people you have spoken to have had the caveat, if its true. Right . Now, the issue is is there a question of whether or not they believe it to be true or they simply dont believe the accusation . Reporter right. This is never going in front of a court of law so thats the natural followup. Do you believe these women and if so or if not, what more information would you need . I tried several times to ask Mitch Mcconnell yesterday if he believed these women. And he didnt answer. But the context here is kind of interesting too, guys. When wig news breaks sometimes theres a hangover between when they respond. Many say i havent read it. That didnt happen yesterday. This story broke and immediately you had lawmakers, a lot of whom didnt like roy moore in the first place but were begrudgingly willing to accept he was the republican nominee, racing to distance themselves from him and racing to get out of town. Both out for veterans day. People delivered these if then statements and left almost as if they were hoping there would be more information that would come to light before theyre back here on monday. Or another story altogether to wipe this out of the news. Because of the time zimpbs, there was a bit of a delay. Even the white house weighed in on this overnight. Heres Sarah Huckabee sanders. Like most americans, the president believes we cannot allow a mere allegation in this case one from many years to to destroy a persons life. However, the president also believes that if these allegations are true, judge moore will do the right thing and step aside. Leave it to others to unpack the white house statement there given the allegations that have been made against the president over time. But again, another if then statement suggesting it will take more than these four women who have been on the record for some of these some politicians to complete the shove here against roy moore and really say hes got to get off the ballot. You know, when we keep hearing this defense it was 40 years ago, it reminds me of remember when kevin spacey first came out and said it was 26 years ago, i cant remember, that really worked against him. Because so many other people who experienced all the things he did over the last 25 years said, oh, cant remember what happened 30 years ago . How about three years ago . I also find it stunning that the moral compass here shifted. Washington is saying if then. Hollywood is saying youre out, youre out, youre out. Isnt that amazing . Hollywood which gets the worst rap out there has canceled movies and pulled people from things. Moving at lightning speed. When the Harvey Weinstein thing came out, and reprehensible in every way, you saw donald trump jr. Come down on him. Blasting hollywood. Hey don junior, where are you today . Lets take a look at roys history. I want to show you more about this very controversial guy. In 2001 he installed a 5,000 pound monument of the Ten Commandments in the lobby of the alabama judicial building. A federal judge ordered him to remove the statue for violating the constitutions ban on the governments establishment of religion. Roy moore refused leading to his first removal as chief justice in 2003. Also this on muslims in 2006 he wrote about Keith Ellison with the headline, Muslim Ellison should not sit in congress. Moore wrote, islamic law is incompatible with our law. And congress has the authority and should act and prohibit ellison from taking the congressional oath today. Now, to judge moore on samesex marriage. In 2014 he wrote a letter to governors of every state talling for support defining marriage as between a man and a woman. That caused him to be removed from the Alabama Supreme Court for the second time. This follows years of incendiary remarks involving an opinion that call ed a crime in alabama a crime against nature. Thats not it. Im not done. This should be enough for you, but im not done. Finally during this years primaries, moore referred to native americans and asians as, quote, reds and yellows during a campaign speech. His explanation for the terms, he says those remarks were a reference to the religious song jesus loves the little children. He denied they were about race. Thats all i got to say about that. On some level, this is republicans opportunity to say no mas. Right. And i think a lot of them are thinking that. They didnt want roy moore there in the first place. But the senate and the government has sort of problems with this and the party has problems with this. This guy is on the ballot and this is coming up soon. You and i have spoken privately to republicans once roy moore got the nomination. They know what its like to have to defend President Trump when he says outlandish things. Hes the president. So they work around the fact that everybody who votes for them also votes for the president. So theres a lot of behind closed door situations. Where are the republican women in the party . A plot to forcibly remove a man from the United States and President Trumps former National Security adviser involved in it. This is how it all is playing out in Robert Muellers investigation. The plot allegedly involves Michael Flynn, his son, turkish officials, and a turkish cleric living in pends. The wall street journal is reporting that according to the plan, the flynns would be paid as much as 15 million by turkish officials to take the cleric forcibly on a private jet to a turkish prison island. The plan was discussed a month before trump took office. And among after he named Michael Flynn his National Security adviser. Lawyers for both the flynns did not comment on the report. Turkeys government claims the cleric in question for an attempt ee eed coup in that cou. With us is a former assistant prosecutor for watergate. Im going to start with a question. Ready . Go ahead. What . This is totally outrageous. This violates the criminal law of bribery statutes. The idea that the National Security adviser who not only was acting in that capacity but also received a fee from the government of turkey for which he was doing work during the time that he was on the Trump Campaign. I mean, all of this is just outrageous conduct. If its true. Theres a couple things going on here. Michael flynn had not registered as somebody who acted on behalf of a foreign agent. He forgot. A lot of people say they forget. Its kind of important. They seem to forget everything. Theres certain things you should know. Any of us takes a job working for a foreign government, youre supposed to disclose that. Especially one that might pay me 15 big ones. Heres my question. If im Robert Mueller, whats the crime here . The not disclosing . Or the fact hes hatching a plot, possibly, with the turkish about a guy who lives in the United States . There seems to be a few things wrong with this picture. Theres a lot of things. Its not only hatching the plot which would be a conspiracy, 371 conspiracy. But it would also be a conspiracy to commit bribery. Itd be a conspiracy to defraud the government. I mean, normally under these circumstances, the turkish government would have to go through an extradition process. You have to go before a federal judge and submit papers. Actually showing what the crime is. Thats why we are the country we are. Because you actually have to have due process before you do i think thes like this. Before you send someone potentially to their death in another country. Exactly. You dont just have guys go in commandos and whisk him away and take him to a prison island. Thats what the plot was. To a country with human rights issues. No question about it. Do Robert Mueller and his team have enough information to charge mike flynn and his son . Would that be this kind of information . This could be part of that information. I mean, somebody has told them about what happened at club 21 meeting where this whole plot was hatched and discussed about the 15 million. On top of it all, we know that flynn allegedly lied to the fbi about his conversation with russian am bbassador kislyak. Thats probably enough in itself to indict Michael Flynn. But whats really interesting about all of this is it goes back to comeys meeting with donald trump. And why donald trump was so intent on having that fbi Investigation Called off on Michael Flynn. You know, what is it that donald trump has to hide . Right. Thats the thing everybody has to remember. Michael flynns son is a prolific tweeter. Hes been a tweeter of inflammato inflammatory, racist stuff, Conspiracy Theory stuff, the pizza gate stuff. Theyve been relatively quiet over the last several months. Darn right. We havent heard from Michael Flynn or anybody else. Some speculate that means there could be cooperation with the government. Now we hear this information, does that imply thats not true . What do you think is happening here . I dont know. Its very possible that both the flynns have entered into negotiations and are cooperating. Just like you saw with papadopoulos. This is not something advertised on the nightly news. If people are cooperating, you want them to cooperate. Go out, make phone calls, wear a wire. Dial a crook, meet with people, get conversations. Ultimately youre going to be dealing with people who have committed crimes. So could be in the interest of the government to have this news out here theyve got enough to get flynn on . Well, im not sure its in the interest of the government to do that. They really want to have both of these individuals if theyre cooperating going out there and gathering evidence so when you go before a jury, you can say you just dont have to take your word for it. The allegations against Alabama Senate can the roy moore are just the latest in a growing list of very powerful men accused of Sexual Misconduct. Many of them have come to light after numerous claims emerged against Harvey Weinstein. More than 80 women accuse him of offenses ranging from Sexual Harassment to assault and rape. Weinstein has denied allegations of nonconsensual sex. The New York Times details the allegations of five women against someone else now. Comedian louis c. K. Two women say he masturbated in front of them and three others allege Sexual Misconduct. Nbc news has not verified the allegations. He says he will issue a statement soon. Kevin spacey another big name faces multiple claims of Sexual Harassment and assault. It began with Actor Anthony Rapp saying he made a sexual advance when he was just 14 years old. Spacey issued an apology. The l. A. Times reported that more than three dozen women have been harassed by james toback. Then 200 women have since contacted the paper with similar instances. Toback denied the allegations. Two women say ben affleck inappropriately touched them. One incident took place in the early 2000s. The other in 2014. Affleck did not admit to wrong doing but says hes reflecting on his behavior. This as Dustin Hoffman is facing allegations. An intern says he openly talked about sex with her in 1985. A woman says he propositioned her back in 91. Hoffman has apologized. And at least six actresses say Brett Rattner was inappropriate with them in separate incidents. And Amazon Studios chief roy price resigned from his job after reports he allegedly sexually harassed a producer. His spokesperson declined to comment. And from the movies to media, fox news Host Bill Oreilly reportedly settled at least six Sexual Harassment claims the largest of which with one individual was 32 million with a former legal analyst at fox. Oreilly said he only resolved three situations and he did it to protect his children from harm. Let the mike drop on that. At least a dozen women have accused Mark Halperin of Sexual Harassment. He also apologized. At least eight women say mike oreskes sexually harassed them. Two of them accused him of suddenly kissing them while discussing Job Opportunities in the 90s. He said, quote, my behavior was wrong and inexcusable. And finally, arguably the most powerful man in the world donald trump at least 16 women accuse the president of Sexual Misconduct. Some dating back to the 1980s. The white house calls all of those accusations lies. I mean, i cant believe that. That list, i kept thinking you were about to wrap up and it kept on going. Lets talk can i say one thing . Of course the white house does say all of those accusations are lies. The access hollywood lie is not a lie. Those are the president s words. Some are called Sexual Harassment, Sexual Misconduct, some are entirely illegal. Theres a some of these things in this range like the things that louis c. K. Has been accused of doing, how is a victim supposed to know when theyre being victimized . Just a feeling you have . Who are you supposed to tell especially if u yo dont work for a company . There is such a range and victims often dont even know who to tell. You know, in cases where they do work for the company, do they go to hr . Hrs number one priority is usually the company. You see how many come out saying there was never an hr filed so it implies this cant be true. When victims have gone forward recently, theyre oftentimes kicked with defamation lawsuits. Like the rattner case. And immediately she gets a lawsuit. Which is intimidating. Absolutely. His agent shut them down. And you also have people who are being investigated by people, you know, like from black cube who are being hired by lawyers. So we know how what the situation looks like. Take us to the other side for a moment. Because we know already louis c. K. s film i love you daddy is now being shelved after these allegations. Walk us through and im not citing an opinion at all here the innocent until Proven Guilty. They are allegations. Im not saying i feel that way, just take me to the other side of the argument. Well, im a victim rights attorney. So i dont really care about the accused and their concerns about, about Due Process Rights in the world of public opinion. I like the idea of accusers being exposed. And the issue of i mean, theres so much conversation about the silence of the victims. And so when theyre coming forward and everyones saying, oh, but the accused and so worried about the accused being and their soft cuddly little concerns about their privacy. What about the privacy of the people who were sexually attacked . What about their lives destroyed year after year . Who changed careers because, you know, they underwent this. Whats the way in which an accused who denies whats going on you know, most of the cases you mentioned there wasnt denial. And in many of them there is. Old cases, cases that go back, cases where theres no documentary evidence or its a he said she said. What is the best thing you would want as a victim rights attorney to happen . A Lie Detector Test . But that does matter because look whats happening with roy moore right now. Right. He says it didnt happen. Many saying if it turns out to be true. Theres not going to be any trial here. Right. We have a statute of limitations problem in all of these issues. Especially when the assaults happened a long time ago. So its the perfect out if you want to give them a pass. Right. And theres more disbelief and distrust of victims because theyre like, why are you coming forward 20 years later . Well, its because they were scared and nobody believed them. And also theres so much conversation about the how in a lot of these cases there were unsubstantiated rumors for years about these people. Maybe they just couldnt take it anymore. Yeah. One of the issues is many of these are power relationships. When people say why didnt you come back, in so many cases it was somebody not in a position to be able to go after the person who was the perpetrator. The person could destroy their lives in almost all of these scenarios. And many cases, careers were destroyed. I mean, the actresses who were preyed upon by Harvey Weinstein, they cant cast themselves in movies. Theyre completely at the mercy. More than seven weeks after the hurricane made landfall, the army corps of engineers is installing the 500th temporary Power Generator in the capital city of san juan. This comes one day after a transmission line failed knocking out power to thousands of people. Right now only 43 of the island has its electricity restored. 56 shelters remain open housing more than 2,000 residents. Now nearly 88 of people do have running water. Joining us on the phone is the mayor of san juan. Mayor, we spoke to you, boy, you were in that shelter the day this was happening and you told us then before the storm had even fully reached its zeneth how this was going to be. Power has not been restored to everyone who lost it. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to give you an update. Not only has power not been restored, but it is intermitt t intermittent. This is really a blow to the economy. Its really a blow to our medical system because we have to have hospitals operating on generators. And of course generators are not made to go seven to eight weeks of running on a continuous basis. So it is very difficult. Yesterday we went to ground zero because all the power went out in most of san juan. We got most of the power back, but there were still some areas and again, power is about economic development. Its about appropriate health care. Its about getting our children a chance to an education. And yesterday we got another blow. Congress approved a tariff of 20 tax on the imports that go from puerto rico into the United States. That is going to obliterate our economy and our chances of recovery are very, very fast dwindling. I want to talk about the power that went out yesterday in san juan. This is the power line that had been fixed by Whitefish Energy. So when it broke, was it because whitefish did a faulty job trying to fix it . Or is it because they had to leave early and no ones come to finish the job . Well, you know, the answer to that question, of course, can only be provided by the prepa which as the United States knows was scheduled to attend a briefing in congress. He just simply decided not to go. Now he has been called to testify in congress again next tuesday with the governor of puerto rico. Especially about the whitefish situation. Whitefish had announced it had completed that portion of the job for which they had already been paid about 10 million. Wow. But what happened was ludicrous. If it had been because they couldnt have finished the job, we couldnt have gotten the power back on. So something happened and the union of prepa employees stated it was because it was faulty. Of course, i dont have technical aspect of it. But the truth of the matter is that when they were hired, they were two men, Small Montana company, that did not have the experience to do the kind of work that they said they were able to do in puerto rico. I happen to think we can go above 3 . Away from the general trend of the 1990s. I think if we continue to create jobs at levels im creating jobs, i think thats going to have tremendous impact.
