All hes talking about is unrelated hears. This is trump tower. Hallie is on her way there. Hundreds lined the streets yesterday, the president visited for the First Time Since his inauguration. No trump, no kkk no fascist usa. Protests didnt let up despite trump giving a second statement on what happened in charlottesville and explicitly condemning White Supremacists and other hate groups who incite violence. Maybe one of the reasons is because just hours after that scripted announcement, trump himself, and he controls his twitter account, not his speechwriters, retweeted and altright activist who is demanding to know why there was no media outrage over a rash of shootings in chicago over the weekend. This activist who the president retweeted is known for pushing fake conspiracy theories, including one claiming that Top Democrats were involved in a childs sex trafficking ring in a d. C. Pizza shop. And i want to remind you, i want to define what the altright is again. It aint no radio station. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, the altright is a group of rad cic which extremist conservatives and their ideology is based on White Supremacists. They are racist, antisemitic and and it i immigrant. This recruit young white he had indicated individuals, the altright became mainstream during the 2016 election in large part because steve ban no put them there. And today he retweeted a story claiming that trump was considering pardoning former arizona sheriff joe arrepaio wh was recently convicted. In response to that, a twitter using wrote hes not a hes a fascist, so not unusual. Which one might think is a criticism of donald trump. But then he retweeted that. That was deleted moments later. And finally, this. President trump, the president of the United States, retweeting this image of a trump train splashing into a human, its a cartoon, when you smabut smashi person with a cnn low go coveri its face. That post was also deleted. And dont forget this comes just three days after an innocent woman was killed from being hit by a car mowed down by a white supremacist at that rally in charlottesville, virginia. The white house has so far not explained the trump train tweet on record, but one white house official requesting anonymity offered this, quote, it was inadvertently posted and as soon as it was noticed it was immediately deleted. I want to point this out to the white house, given all that is going on, given that there were nazis rioting in the streets he overs weekend, the tensions around the world in terms of twitterer and retweeting, youre the white house. Tighten up your game. A lot of people are saying the white house wont be able to tighten up its game. Donald trump is also under pressure by large american businesses over his response to the violence in charlottesville. Yesterday three top ceos announced they were stepping down from the Manufacturing Council. Kenneth frazier came first of merck. Kevin blank under armour announced that he is pulling out. And intel also pulled out from the manufacturing down silg. The council. There are almost 30 organizations on that council. Intel,e intel, under armour and merck is gone. So those three have resigned. They are frustrated that donald trump has not been able to move on with his agenda as stephanie said. Im not able to move and you might also point out head of the Manufacturing Union said these councils are not actually doing anything. So the argument that we hear over and over from the jamie dimons and jeff immelts, i want a seat at the table, a table doing what . Thats right. And thats what a lot of these ceos are frustrated by, that they are there, they sit around, they get into photoopes, but they are not getting anywhere. The key he will be president for some period of time, maybe 3 1 2 years, maybe less depending on what Robert Mueller finds. Maybe more. Conceivably moore. I hope not. And if he will be president , he needs to be contained. Ive been struck by the analogy for the last day or two, we contained the soviet union. Where we wont change trump. People should stop hoping that he becomes who he is not. People like me were willing to give him something of a chance when he was elected. Maybe he would rise to the occasion at least somewhat. He really hasnt. So how do you contain trump . Congress has to step up, governors and mayors have to step up, civil society, the media, business has to step up. After the attack in charlottesville, protesters are showing up not just in virginia, but in cities across the country. Why do you carry that flag . Because this is my hair dama heritage. My family fought to save their farm. They are protesting over 1,000 monuments that still stand on public property honoring leaders of the con ffederacycon. This is part of a larger push to take down those memorials. Yesterday it n. Durham, North Carolina protesters took things in to their own hands and toppled a confederate statue. People cheered, everyon began kicking the monument. And a Confederate Flag on the South Carolina headline mass headlines in 2015 when authorities learned that a convicted mass murderer dylann roof who shot and killed nine black Church Members in charleston was inspired by that very flag. You might be surprised to learn how many confederate symbols remain on public land. Last year in 2016, the Southern Poverty Law Center identified more than 1500. This map that you are looking at shows the majority of monuments located in the former confederate south. The center found 718 confederate monuments or statues, 109 Public Schools named after confederate generals robert e. Lee and 80 counties or cities also named after lee. And get this, ten of our u. S. Military bases are named after confederate leaders. Take a look at some of the memorials. This carving on a Stone Mountain shows robert e. Lee and his commanding officers. Work first began in 1915 and was completed in 1925. These four statues down in new orleans have since been removed. And in kentucky, lexington mayor is pushing to remove two very controversial statues from a former county courthouse. Mayor gray is here to talk about that now. And it certainly is a complicated one. Mayor, thank you for joining us. Give us your actireaction to charlottesville. Well, i have our city have been examining these two statues for some time now. Literally almost two years. Now, charlottesville actually in some sense accelerated our decision. I had already prepared to present to our council a resolution to remove these two stat statues. Why . Well, its really important to put this in context. These two statues today stand on ground that is really sacred. It was at one time a slave Auction Block called cheap side. One of the largest in the south. So these two monuments, two men who fought to preserve slavery are standing today on sacred ground where men, women and children once were sold into slavery. So it just wasnt right. Just not right. So mayor, what is the conversation like in lexington . Because obviously these conversations will be going on across the country. And they are on some level conversations that have been going on for 150 years. So how do you manage the conversations that you dont end up with Something Like that happened in charlottesville . Because there are strong views and people will protest. Youre right. And thats why for some time now weve been engaging in the conversation about these statues. We had a review board that examined it. And then weve had conversations continuing. There is never a perfect time to stand up for what is right, to stand up for american values. In my view, we stand up all the time. We either stand up and speak out, or we sit back, relax and we remain silent. That is not the time for dootod. Today is when we must stand up for american values, for liberty, justice and freedom. For nonviolence. Speak out against hatred. And these regrettably in some sense regrettably these statues have become symbols of that lost cause and symbols of racism and bigotry and discrimination. And thats why in my view they need to be moved. Then what is the argument to especially from the center of our town. So what is the argument to keep them there . Im assuming that there are people from your city who would say this isnt about racism, it is part of the citys history or heritage. What argument do they make . The argument that they make of course is that we would be erasing history, that we would be hiding history. The decision to relocate these monuments, nothing casual about it. But when you think about the argument that we learn from history, then you can actually ask, well, if the statues are Still Standing at cheap side at this slave Auction Block for more than 100 years, what have we learned from history . Have we really learned from history . Or should we relocate these out of such a prominent location where they are actually honored and glorified today. That is the decision that i made and that is the decision now im taking to our city council. That is really the heavy lifting. We have some Extraordinary People on our city council, they will be examining this. Will they be becopushback . Of course there will be. Kentucky was very divided in the civil war. Brother fought against brother. I have it in my even heritage. Three great uncles, one on the side of the june, one on the side of the confederacy. We went there and visited as children. In the end, what always has worked in the past is if the United States shows enough threat of force, north korea always backs down. So kim jongun is a bit of a rational player . Not only a bit. North korea is actually a rational player. Kim jongun is not crazy, hes not unpredictable. Hes very predictable and very rational. So is the United States government playing a smart hand here . Well, if you read secretary mattis and secretary tillersons joint oped, that states very clearly what the u. S. Policy is. President trump is out there with his rhetoric, that is his style, his personality. But the policy has remained very consistent. Strategic accountability. Id like to point out i read their oped, the president who loves taking to twitter, retweeting altright leaders, he did not retweet or show his vocal support of what they put. Which is important because in the last hour, secretary tillerson has said that, quote, we continue to be interested in finding a better wayor way to get to dialogue, but that is up to kim jongun. Is that an outcome that makes sense . Should we be looking for direct talks . The point is absolutely that the fault lies with kim jongun and north koreas behavior. Not just in the past week, not just in the past year. But for decades. Actually going back to the korean war. So in fact again i think if you look very carefully at what this administration is doing, it is a policy that makes sense, it is very calculated, it is strategic. And it is continuing to move along, but again, President Trump should have actually put kim jongun on notice and i think that is exactly why kim jongun backed down. This is closely allied with neonazi organizations. And then there are the socalled neo Confederate Flags. This is the southern national. They combine the x with the confederate battle flag and magnolia flower in this case. Finally, we have the flag for the american guard which according to the Southern Poverty Law Center say they are dedicated to physically opposing leftist at rallies. So this is a flag for people who go to the rally. They say come and take it. So keep an eye out for those flags. This stuff important because this is not general heres what we think about the world, these are groups that espouse in many cases violence and certainly White Supremacy, antigay, anti. And that is the reason why we highlight it, not to draw more attention. Yeah, people say why do you put it on tv. Dont do a profile of richard spe spechbser. Spencer. But the reason we want it highlighted, many of these groups recruit white male young educated young men. And you have to know if somebody in your circle is looking at these things or talking about them. You need to know what they are. This isnt just about your personal identity. These are hate groups. Neonazis, the socalled altright, antigovernment groups, neo confederates. Lets be clear, they are all part of the same White Supremacist Movement that is opposed to american values. There is no patriotism in White Nationalism. And indeed weve been deeply concerned as you said, there has been a surge of white supremacist recruiting at College Campuses this past year. We recorded over 160 incidents in more than 30 states. There has been a surge of these groups on social media. Weve seen twitter and facebook flooded with the most grotesque kind of hate you can imagine. And of course weve seen these organizations flourish in the current preliminary environment. They feel that finally they have a seat at the table. So to stephanies point, they are actively recruiting. Its important to understand what this their success looks like should that people know what were up against here. What who are hes these rec . Extremism is a problem in any form. Islam extremists, but right wing extremists, they try exemploypl disaffected young people. That sounds like the same description we hear when we talk about isis recruiters. Or the germans with skin heads. Its very similar. Its no accident that the car ramming took place. This young man james fields who murdered the innocent heather heyer, they were using the same technique of car ramming that has terrorized tel aviv, france, germany. Its domestic terror. If it quacks like a duck and walks like a duck, guess what, its a duck. I know youre working behind the scenes with godaddy, with twitter, with facebook. What can actually be done . Because in terms of First Amendment free speech rights, its tricky. It certainly is tricky. But the freedom of expression isnt the freedom to incite violence. A twitter account is calling ow alleged racists. The handle is yesyoureracist. A posting from the feed is reportedly responsible for at least one controversial shaurtsville protester losing his job. Publicly calling someone racist is risky business. At least one image was misidentified. And the raleigh man behind the twitter account says hes receiving Death Threats. Here is nbcs jo ling kent. When the violence erupted, the smartphones came out. Photos and videos captured individual faces and the internet went to work. University of nevada reno student was caught on camera and the naming and shaming began. He says he received Death Threats and calls to be expelled. I understand the photo is very bad looking, but i dont believe you should threaten my family. To me, thats demon citrus. You can call my nazi, hate my ideology, but i wouldnt threaten anyone. Reporter under pressure, his university reacted saying we remain firm in our commitment in denouncing all forms of bigotry and racism. At top dog restaurant in berkeley, california, cole white, a cook, resigned after he was identified for protesting. His former employer posted this letter on the front door saying white no longer works at top dog. Actor Jennifer Lawrence taking a stand telling her 16yearold facebook followers these are the faces of hate. Look closely and post anyone you find. You cant hide with the internet, you pathetic cowards. There is always a risk that the wrong person could be identified. But people have to recognize that whatever theyre doing in public is now up for grabs. Reporter big business, challenged too. What is the reason behind starting this twitter account . What are you trying to accomplish . Well, i just think that, you know, these people who theyre not hiding behind their hoods anymore, theyre proud and theyre out. And if theyre really so proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with White Supremacists and neonazis, then i think that, you know, their communities need to know who these people are and what theyre trying to do to our nation. Yeah, i mean it is noteworthy, pete in that nazi image that image from the protest that we saw over the weekend, stunning with the torch, screaming and sent to our colleague, you may identify me as a nazi, but i wouldnt attack anyone. Well, that to me, sounds odd, but to how serious this is, putting these pictures out there, one person was misidentified. And youre making very serious accusations. You could get yourself in a lot of legal trouble. Well, the gentleman that youre referring to, a professor in arkansas, i do not have anything to do with his identity being put out there. Several people actually sent his photo to me, i looked at it, determined it was not him, and so intentionally did not, you know, out him, so to speak. But how do you manage that . Thats going to become an issue, right . That misidentification happens with the best of intentions. How do you manage not having people caught out as neonazis or fascists and things like that and going to work and having their colleagues or bosses ask about that. And certainly, thats why i took care to, you know, look at what these people are posting, other photos of them, the kind of content they have, in many cases these people were, you know, posting white supremacist propaganda on their profiles, so it wasnt hard to determine, you know, who these people were . Listen, crowd sourcing and trying to identify some of these attackers over the weekend is important business. And youve received as we reported threats over the last 24 hours. Can you speak to that . Thats right. You know, these White Supremacists, they have targeted me, they have targeted my family, my extended family even, and, you know, it is obviously no one wants to receive Death Threats. But intimidation tactics are how these people work. It is how they worked back since the days of the kkk burning crosses in peoples yards. And they depend on people staying silent and afraid. And thats how they win. Bigotry thrives on silence. It requires people to say nothing. And i refuse to let that happen. Talk to me about the picture, the user picture on twitter. What is it and why not use your face . Well, thats from an old mtv show called wonder shows, and which i thought was apt. But you dont so youre hoping that this tell me more about it, why choose that. Well, i havent, you know, made a, you know, secret of my identity. I did an interview with cnn the first day i started the twitter account back in 2012. But, you know, it is just the theme of the account. Okay. Logan, thanks very much for joining us. And, of course, the latest news in this last hour about the head of the American Association manufacturers. Logan said something that made me think about the head of the association, about those ceos. He said bigotry thrives on silence. So while we might not see a public backlash to these ceos, these companies who are standing down, interesting to see if it actually affects their bottom line in some way shape or form, bigotry thrives in silence.
