been a political firearm. but the republicans haven't let up. they say the president hasn't done enough. the president said, look, we still have a long way to go but he endures the va secretary and says great progress has been made. take a listen. >> today the va is handling millions more appointments inside and outside the va and delivering more care. on average veterans are waiting just a few days for an appointment and that's all good news. veterans continue to tell us ha that once they get through the door, the care is often very good. >> it didn't take long for republicans to fire back. they are pushing a bill that is going to come up next week, which is the veterans accountability act. they think not enough heads have rolled and they want to give the va secretary the authority to fire any employee for misconduct. in addition to that it's worth noting that the president talked about the iran deal and looked at it through the lens of his philosophy of doing everything you possibly can in lieu of boots on the ground, in lieu of combat in lieu of war. so use this opportunity there to make that case again, as you well know. we are just inside the beginning of the 60-day all of the republican contenders. this is supposed to be kasich's big day, but. you have trump down in south carolina also making headlines. so for kasich he ran through his biography in a long rambling speech. e he had notes but no prepared text. e he talked about his time balance ing balancing the budget in the mid-1990s. that's going to be a a pitch he's making to conservative voters. he also has a message on social welfare that's distinct for most of the rest of the field. he talks about the working poor, mentally ill, people in prison drug addicted and how the gop needs to change its approach there. he pushed through that medicaid expansion here in ohio. he didn't just decide to sign off, he fought with a republican-controlled legislature to get that through. that's something that could cause him a lot of problems in a place like iowa. that has advisers focused on new hampshire. he's going to be one of several people staking hope there is. you have jeb bush and chris christie, who is taking his entire campaign there. kasich's advisers think they need jeb bush to make a big mistake if they are going to break out of the pact. >> he had had some endearing moments tennessee, where today there is a new twist in the investigation. the fbi has searched an apartment for clues. the gunman may have shared his plans with others. on the left side of your screen, we're the jail showing the moment a female attendant found bland hanging in her cell. the district attorney will be investigated. adam reese is live for us in texas. the da said it was a bit too early to say if this is a suicide or murder, but they have said from the police department that they classified it as suicide. >> yeah, having said all that, he said he's still treating this as a murder investigation. the family has given him valid reasons. there was no reason she would k want to take her life. everything was looking up for her. the key evidence here that he will be look inging at are there anybody else's fingerprints on that garbage bag. >> i asked the texas rangers to do extensive scientific testing op the trash bag that was recovered. i want fingerprints done. i want touch dna done on the trash bag so we can know if anyone besides ms. bland's dna, fingerprints were on that trash bag. >> reporter: now the sheriffs office released three hours of video from that monday, the day she died. 6:30 a.m. she refuses breakfast. 7:05, a jailer comes by. she says i'm fine. 7: 7:55, she asks to use the phone, but we don't belief she made a phone call. then an hour later she's found dead in. her cell. >> i believe we have interior video of one of the local affiliates had actually access to the jail cell and they showed a trash can. it's a large size trash can, correct? >> reporter: i was just in that cell with the sheriff. he gave us a tour. it's what they call a tank. there were beds in there for four people. it's a large room about 15 by 20 feet. there's a a sink a toilet and extra beds. so it was quite roomy. it wasn't just a single cell. >> so there you can see the trash can and the type of trash bag that allegedly was used. at least police say that sandra employees of a shoe store trying to smash a car window. there was a 2-year-old girl inside and witnesses say she was drenched with sweat. it was 91 degrees outside and certainly much hotter inside that car. you can hear them banging on the window trying to get. in. eventually they were able to rescue the girl and brought her inside the store to cool her down. according to the manager the couple who said the girl was their niece asked if nurns insurance was going to pay for their broken window. they were ticketed for child endangerment. and a similar scene near philadelphia. this time it was police officers trying to smash their way into an suv. there was a baby and a young girl locked inside 90 degree temperatures. the mom accidentally locked her keys in the suv and called 911. the kids were rescued and are okay. this was the story that was so astonish inging the moment caught on live tv. mick fanning, a legend in his sport, getting attacked by a huge shark and not just once. fans clinton, because of trump's bombastic campaign we aren't talked about obama's deal with iran or hillary clinton's plans to continue obama's failed national security agenda. the controversy surrounds the 591 guys with us never called themselves e heroes. so to have this big thing of chasing each other around by the tail and not focusing on the real targets that we should be. >> it seems like a big brouhaha. my dad was a vietnam vet and said the same thing when it comes to hero classification that you don't refer to each other like that. you did your service and do what's expected of you and then you move on. but my dad said about donald trump when i asked him specifically about mccain that he didn't serve and shouldn't be bringing this up. because of that my dad's opinion, that's just one person but your own opinion as a vietnam vet, do you feel the same way? those who haven't served don't have business commenting. >> i think your dad is right. trump has paid for his right to speak and i think your dad and john earned our right to speak. so you really have to factor that in when you consider comments like this. >> policy concerning the va how we're treating our vets when they are coming home from war and the services that they should be privy do and what they are not getting, how we're failing them currently. do you agree with that? >> to a certain extent. the think the va has gotten a big rap. any big organization is going to have challenges. i had the opportunity of choosing my health care from three different sources. i'm a retired navy officer. i can go to the navy hospital. i can get civilian care. i choose to go to the va. i have found more dedicated professional health care people doctors and nurses and staff and everything else at the va than any system i harry reid and lindsey graham's campaign manager in terms of this being a situation where as harry reid said republicans aren't distancing themselves as fast on immigration as they are on the john tape and nobody can tell what was discussed because of o the edit editing. the original footage has not been made available. what we see on the tape is a woman who says we're not in it for the money and any money must be related to reimbursement for costs. the transcript shows the official repeatedly deny there was any policy to do anything but to cover costs. we have been. following this story. how damaging is this? no matter how you feel about the issue of abortion and whether you are pro choice or pro life that is damning and certainly of concern. >> it's not good for the organization, but planned parenthood has been engaged in a fight for its life from opponents of abortion. they are used to being an under investigation and targeted. this particular group spent three years. they have thousands of hours of footage every week. planned parenthood is in a vulnerable position because it's the largest provider of services in this country. it's a target for folks who oppose abortion. it also receives fund inging from the federal government for nonabortion related services like std testing and contraception. for a long time groups have been trying to get the government to defund planned parenthood. this is going to be another arrow in their quiver against the organization. >> let's talk about that group. it's called the center for medical progress. explain what their relationship is with planned parenthood and also their plans to release more videos. >> this is a group that previously was not heard of but had very familiar faces behind it. some people have raised concerns about it was misleading the irs about their purposes. on the board of the organization is troy newman who is in anti-abortion circles. and also involved with the group in live action. you may remember secret videos by james o'keefe, that was with the founder of this organization organization. so there's a an interconnected web here. also apparently working in tandem with politicians. this is is a three-year effort that's been going on. >> the attorney general said they have opened an investigation into the planned parenthood clinics in that state. >> there are several states that announced investigations. this is again, in the context of past investigations of planned parenthood. usually it says these are politically motivated investigations. the question is whether there have been violations of federal or state law. there are also two house committees that are convening investigations on this. the question is whether there are violations that say you cannot profit from the charlotte and attend the trial. >> when we talk about the trial and the the defense of the officer, what do you make of how the lawyers will argue self-defense? >> well i don't think they really have much choice. there's no doubt that the officer fired the fatal shots so the only question for the jury is whether he was justified in doing so. the only justification that they will be able to offer is he posed some type of serious risk to the officer. >> one thing to point out is jonathan's mom forgives the officer but needs to be punished. what do you think that means? >> i think there has to be accountability. there has to be accountability on both sides of the law. when an officer takes the life of a citizen without justification, he has to stand accountable for his actions just like >> reporter: she says they were out of the girl's reach. she wanted to eat them but she claims the parents were letting her have them so the girl is loudly crying and she asked the group to leave or take the girl outside. they didn't. the girl continued to cry lasting nearly an hour she says. and she had had enough. >> all i said was, i slammed my hands on the counter and i said this needs to stop. meaning, her screaming. i pointed at her and she looked at me and she stopped. her parents said are you screaming at a child? yes, i am. and she shut up. >> reporter: she got what she wanted but the girl's parents are upset leaving a comment on the diner's facebook page calling it the worst experience adding who in their right mind would behave like this unless you are deranged. she replied to the post saying yes, in part, i am blank crazy and you are lucky i didn't get blank nuts because being physical is not something i cower from. >> reporter: are you sorry at all? >> i might have and the frankly, all of them i spoke with said they did not see that as an issue. they saw it as politicians being politicians. and they think that trump despite him maybe saying things inarticulately sometimes will be a better leader than the other republican candidates throughout right now. take a listen to some of that sound. >> i think thought donald trump was fantastic. he seems to me to be the only candidate this addresses the issues, is not afraid to speak his mind. he talks about what needs to be talked about which is something that most politicians just dance around and don't really address the issue. forinstance, immigration. and the porous borders we have. >> reporter: he's really addressing those people who do not trust the establishment, do not trust politicians, do not trust the news media. and he's going out and saying i'm the only one telling you the truth an i'm the only one that can get things done. look at me. i'm a hugely successful businessman. i'm a billionaire. nobody will do better deals with china and i'm the one right for the white house and he certainly if not appealing to a large segment of the population, he is appealing to a portion of the republican base who feels underrepresented right now. >> katy tur there in south carolina for us great to see you. thank you. joining me now from washington, phillip rucker, reporter for "the washington post." phillip, let's talk about the south carolina performance because there donald trump gave out lindsey graham's cell phone number and asked people to call it which apparently he was slammed with phone calls from people that were there in attendance. do you think that donald trump is really adding to the campaign of the gop to take back the white house? i mean his honesty campaign of telling it like it is. >> yeah. you know it's pretty remarkable. what happened earlier today, the popular governor of ohio john kasich announced his presidential campaign in ohio and a message that's what the republicans want to be promoting now, empathy, compassion giving people the right to rise and nobody's paying attention to that because trump is out there giving out a senator's cell phone number. it is a remarkable turn in this campaign. >> well, and you make a great point because the ohio governor john kasich gave a great speech introducing himself, his family. >> yeah. >> his intentions for what he would want to do coming from the state of ohio and talking about policy and important things. but here looking at the poll numbers and now things will change with kasich officially in this race and he'll get added but we look at monmouth university, once again, finding trump comfortably in second place coming to the iowa caucuses. however, the des moines register hit him hard in an editorial saying the comments of mccain disgraceful and said that he's become a distraction with traction. a feckless blowhard. they didn't hold back. but this is not something that -- we have seen this in prior election cycles with certain names but they needed money to keep them going. trump can stay in this because he's got the cash to support himself. >> absolutely. he can stay in this for a long time. he can stay on the debate stage. i expect that the debate next month in cleveland is going to be all about trump. it's going to be what does trump say and the other candidates respond to him? he is defining the republican party primary at this moment which is dangerous for the gop. this is a party that wants to be looking ahead to the future talking about some of these policy issues talking about hillary clinton. it's been probably a week now since there's been much attention to hillary's e-mails and benghazi and the attacks of the republicans want to be waging so it's still the summer very early. i'm curious to see the polls later this week about whether trump has really taken a hit or not from the mccain comments. >> are we too stuck in the political paradigm to think that maybe donald trump is flipping the script and changing it all up? >> well maybe. i mean he's tapping into something. you mentioned that des moines register editorial earlier. that was a devastating editorial and one in "wall street journal" sunday night. and, you know this stuff might be helping trump. >> right. >> he can run against the media. and he put out a lengthy statement on e-mail this morning responding to the des moines register attacking the newspaper saying the reporters aren't covering the events fairly and a segment of this electorate that will respond positively. >> thank you. >> you bet. we're asking you the bing pulse question of the day, who is right on donald trump, the pundits or the polls? but second whether or not he can break through in what's a really really crowded field. the advisers say privately they see marco rubio as contenders and there's questions of whether or not he can raise enough money and likely to make a stand in new hampshire and which is pretty crowded. and really thomas the advisers privately acknowledge that he is going to need jeb bush to make a major mistake to be able to float to the top of this pack. thomas? >> crowded field. one more in it. kasie, thank you. we are tracking developments and news this hour on the death of sandra bland. family and friends paying final respects to her in illinois. authorities say bland committed suicide in her cell following her arrest earlier this month. dash cam video of that traffic stop is expected to be released today. msnbc's adam reiss got an inside look of bland's jail cell with the sheriff. explain what you were able to see. what was it like inside the cell? >> reporter: it's called a tank, thomas. it is about 15 feet by 20 feet and actually made for several people to be in there. not just one person. and the reason she was in there, the sheriff says is because she was argumentative and combative at the traffic stop. coming in on that friday afternoon, she was considered a high risk inmate. put in that cell for her own protection and protection of several other females in a cell across the way from her. the sheriff as you said gave me a tour just about an hour ago and described exactly how she was found three days later on that monday. >> twisted it up like a ligature and had tied one end of it around the brace and one around her neck and then she was dragged or she lumped on this side of this partition. >> reporter: now, the d.a. is treating this as a murder investigation. he said the family has given him valid reasons to believe she had everything to live for. she had just gotten a job. no reason to believe she would want to kill herself. he said a key piece of evidence is that trash bag and he wants the know are there anybody else's fingerprints on it. thomas? >> graham responded saying donald trump continues to show hourly he is ill-prepared to be commander in chief. the two people most excited about donald trump's candidacy are barack obama and hillary clinton. >> hmm. you know -- >> your response to this karen finney spokesperson for hillary clinton and the campaign. >> i will be serious in the answer here because i think donald trump's rhetoric i think is very dangerous. i think the things he said for example, about immigration are pretty despicable. but i think he is a challenge to the republican party and they know it because he is going to challenge all the others running to stand up against some of the rhetoric that we have heard from him. right in any time he goes out and he says some of these things, they have to decide am i going to respond or afraid of angering the base of my party? >> national international. they face pushback in portland florida, in paris, in london. the issue's vary from place to place. here, deblasio's administration kind of using congestion as a trojan horse for worker fairness and passenger safety. >> also for vetting. >> sure. >> right? [ male announcer ] go long™. all right. so we have been learning new details about the brazen prison escape of last month. nearly three weeks after the manhunt for escaped killers sweat and matt ended, new information released by "the new york times" is shedding light on how they were able to pull it off. unfortunately, we weren't able to re-establish our connection with one of "the new york times" reporters that wrote the story but much of the details from sweat, lone survivor giving investigators a thorough account and making the same comparison most of us have likening it to "the redemption" movie. >> reporter: according to nirkt, david sweat told investigators how he planned the escape in extraordinarily specific terms portraying himself as the driving force. according to the report sweat started devising a plan this past winter after he was transferred to a cell next to matt almost immediately he began cutting a hole in the back of the cell using a hacksaw blade. each night, sweat would wait until after the 11:30 head count to crawl through the hole shim my down pipes down several stories and rome the tunnels looking for a way out. he would then return to his cell each morning before the 5:30 a.m. count. >> he was looking for a way that he could find a weak point, find a place where he would be able to get out. >> reporter: sweat reportedly had an macgooifr-like sense. when steam was unbearable, he rigged a fan from the cell using electricity from the tunnel's lights. >> he was creative at least according to his account in the way that he dealt with the obstacles that he faced. >> reporter: like so many others, sweat and his partner reportedly compared their efforts to the escape in "the shawshank redemption" joking while it took the character 20 years to escape, it would only take them ten. >> whether it's luck whether it's skill, whether it's determination, they were able to do something that many people weren't able to do before them. >> that was msnbc's tamron hall reported. david sweat was moved to a special housing unit last week and be confined for 23 hours a day. community supervision filed formal charges against him. and that is on of course on top of the life sentence that he was already serving before escape. this is going to be a big one. one we can't contain? >> i think what it is is we have as much fun making it as it is watching it. we know it's a silly premise but we do it with conviction and each movie we try to make a different type of movie. the first one is kind of the typical shark disaster movie and the second one we went to new york and we kind of did a plane disaster movie and the braveheart, new york people banding together n. this one we do white house down with sharks. instead of terrorists it's sharks with teeth. we have universal orlando and then something were cool at the very end so we kind of cram four movies into this one film. >> we see ian is back. but the thing that makes this bigger and better i know that you try to outdo yourselves every time the celebrity cameos that you have coming up. who can you reveal? >> well, i mean the big ones are president of the united states is mark cuban. everybody knows who he is. he was just amazing. you know? put on the tux and it is like okay, you need to run. and then ann coulter the vice president. >> what a ticket. >> you know what? i think that would be -- having them against donald trump probably a very very interesting political debate. >> anthony that's the next movie right there. >> there you go. >> i understand though you wrote the ballad of sharknado and you have a comic coming out tomorrow. arch chi versus sharknado. how were you able to craft a bad lad? >> my favorite is pet cemetery by the ramones. you always end up writing songs from the movies and i wanted to do something in that vein and writing music partner and our band, we did the balad of sharknado and now become the theme song and also going to be on the soundtrack album that comes out today. >> anthony, what is the best thing in the director's cut that you can tell us about that might not make it on to syfy and you thought was brilliant or really funny and didn't make it into the fill snm. >> you know the weird thing is we're going a dvd version and i'm one of the few director that is when we go in to do the dvd cut, i'm like can i cut that out? we did the sharknado 2 dvd, i cut a scene out. i thought the pacing would be better. like a couple random lines in the dvd version. we have a top secret cameo in there and cut the line out to make it seem like where's wall do. who's this guy? they know who it is. it's subtle things. like manipulation. there is a sequence we tried to do for number 3 that we just didn't have time or budget to do and involved motorcycles. that's sort of something we haven't discussed. but, you know seeing ian on a motorcycle, we really wanted that to happen but maybe next time. >> maybe next time. there's always a next time. did you get left shark katy perry's left shark to make a cameo?
