Response to the Security Council resolution and nbc joins us now from honolulu. What are you hearing from there . Reporter even though president obama has been out here on vacation, he had several meetings with his National Security team and that was how he came to this decision. You know, the position for the u. S. , they always had the same position on the settlement activity. All president obama had to do was vote no to veto the resolution, but he abstained. This means the resolution means that israel will have to stop building settlements on the occupy palestinian territory. Keep in mind since 2009, israel is settling on the west bank. There were 100,000 and now it increased to more than 500,000, a huge, huge number. President elect donald trump has been pushing hard for the u. S. To vote no on this vote. By obama abstaining, she essentially sending a message. We got off a call with the white house and they reiterated five or six times that president obama is still the president and he is the one who will be making the decisions. They talked about how president obama has done more for israely security than any other president. He repeatedly stood up for them and always a posed settlements and just negotiated a historic agreement that with a huge, huge amount of money, he believes and has believed all along that a twostate solution is the only way to secure israely peace. Jacob . I want to turn to cal perry who is here with me in the studio. Me what we saw happen here at the un. What are the ramifications . We heard from tammy, but what are we seeing . This is a symbolic gesture. The un has no way of enforcing this on the ground. The settlements are likely to continue and you can almost guarantee it, but this was the 50 time that the United States has not vetoed the resolution. In the past they vetoed it and today they abstained and it was quite the statement on israel. Lets look at what the United States ambassador had to say. Because there are important issues that are not sufficiently addressed in this resolution and because the United States does not agree with every word in the text, the United States did not vote in favor of the resolution. It is because this resolution reflects the facts on the ground and is consistent with u. S. Policy across republican and democratic administrns throughout the history of the state of israel that the United States did not veto it. There was question whether or not the u. S. Would veto and abstain. We heard from the israeli ambassador a short time ago. They are voting yes in favor of the resolution. We have in fact voted no. You voted no to negotiations. You voted no to progress. A chance for better lives for israelis and palestinians. You voted no to the possibility of peace. There is no question that part of this is the relationship and the chilling relationship between president barack obama and the israeli Prime Minister. It has been building for a long time and started well before they campaigned against the american president in his congress when president obama was negotiating and we got this from the israeli and here it is. Israel rejects the shameful antiisraeli resolution and will not abide by its terms. At a time when they do nothing to stop the slaughter in syria ganged up. They failed to protect israel and colewded with it behind the scenes. Israel looks forward to working with president elect trump and with all our friends in congress and democrats alike to negate the harmful effects of this resolution. This is a symbolic measure. And that is effectively a vote for the resolution. So why no vote for the resolution . We heard a lot from capitol hill and we heard some members say we should pull the funding for the United Nations and that seems strong. You are absolutely right. An abstention on the vote is a yes vote and that is what stopped that. Kelly odonnell is covering the president elect. Just in the last hour, he tweeted this. As to the un, things will be different after january 20th. What are your sources and what is the transition telling you . Reporter well, i would tell you that that kind of i succinct thing is effective because it is provocative without telling us where he will be going with it. To say it has been different has a lot of implications. At the same time today we are adding to the discussion you just have been having. Democrats are powerful in washington and who are also concerned about how the Obama Administration handled the issue with the Un Resolution. Chief among them is Chuck Schumer of new york, but is also going to be the top democrat in the senate. He tried to block it and he reached out to the administration and trying to advocate for that. After the events unfolded, he writes it is extremely frustrating, disappointing and confounding that they failed to veto this resolution saying that the un is the wrong forum for the reasons for this kind of approach. What i also thought was striking is he said because the un had a history of being antiisrael, president s of both parties have tried to shield israel from this sort of resolution. Chuck schumer goes on to say unfortunately this administration has not followed in the path and the actions will move us further from peace in the mideast. Thats from the pop democrat in the United States senate in the next congress. That gives you an idea of how provocative and how potentially long reaching todays actions were. From the trump team, not a lot of response yet except that tweet. We know that donald trump has shown an interest in having a strong personship with israel. We have seen condemn nations from a number of republicans in congress who said a whole range of things that this was outrageous and inappropriate for the u. S. To not take a greater action to sort of defend and protect israel. That goes from the House Speaker to a number of big names in the Republican Party in the senate from john mccain to Lindsey Graham to tom cotton. This will be another way in addition what we saw about china and taiwan and russia, to talk about his Foreign Policy in advance of putting his hand on the bible next month and how that will play out will be interesting to see. With both the president and president elect where we are not likely to see much of them, this policy is playing out and for sort of a statement world in washington when people are on holiday they are firing off reaction it is to significant steps. Bipartisanship on this issue at least my friend is here as well. You know donald trump can get inside the mind of this man as well. What was he trying to do by trying to stop this yesterday and by coming up so publicly on the un . He has been against any Un Resolution that would stop the israelis from extending settlements. He has been on the side of netanyahu. We believe netanyahu put in a request to Say Something about this to try to influence the un. He has been against the Obama Administrations attempts to create a twostate solution. He also said that jared kushner, his son in law could potentially negotiate peace between the two sides. We have his un pick to israel, David Friedman who is a right wing hard liner when it comes to moving not only the embassy from tel aviv to jerusalem and allowing settlements to continue. The Family Foundation funded it. Its clear where donald trump stands on this issue and this makes it clear that the embassy will move probably for the first time to jerusalem. What sort of ramifications does that have in the mideast . We will have to wait and see. One of the reasons why it never has been moved, we dont want to provoke any middle eastern reaction against our embassy and think we are not on the side of negotiating for peace. We are hearing the state department say that. They dont necessarily agree with every aspect of this resolution, but the United Nations makes it clear that both must act now to preserve the possibility of peace and say this action preserves the ability for the pears to negotiate the end of the conflict. They dont want to get in the way of a twostate solution. What the Trump Administration does Going Forward will be very interesting to see. Listen, we know what side he is on. Knowing the trump folks so well, just up the street, we know that the u. S. Contributes around a quarter of the budget and both operating cost and the Peace Keeping forces. Does he want to pull that money back . We will have to see. Its unclear what donald trump wants to do. He sends out a lot of tweets without thinking them through, but what does he do when he takes office, we will find out. Does he go to israel . We talked about him doing it and is now the time where he visits . I talk to netanyahu and how will netanyahu be able to convince him to no longer side with the un and size with israel . Thank you so much for being here on my first go around. I want to get more on the vote at the United Nations. Joining me now is elise. What do you make of the vote . So happy to be here with you. What do you make of todays vote . The Obama Administration abstaining is an example of how so many americans, their frustration that he never really tries to cut it down the middle and please both sides and makes everyone angry. Its classic leading from behind that famous des cryptor where he probably did want to in the process he upsets everyone. The trump tweet said he will be different. Thats the language he used at the un come inauguration day. He signalled his Foreign Policy will be different from the arms race and now he is signalling that its not going to be business as usual at the un and he will not be worried to disrupt the status quo and not going to be worried to challenge and he finds it to be inefficient and wasteful. I think donald trump is looking forward to shocking everyone raising anticipation for how he will be a wrecking ball to the institution. I want to talk about the weapons issue. The president elect told mika let it be an arms race. It seems to confirm wants to build out and grill the arsenal. We see this Holiday Cheer exchange in his christmas letter. How do you interpret all of this . I wish he didnt have to do this before christmas. Couldnt we all not worry about this during christmas . With that said, i think he really again is just trying to shock the world and trying to state that he is unafraid to be completely radically different from the Foreign Policy status quo of the last couple of decades. There is a reason we tried to cut down on the Nuclear Weapons of the world. We have been on the brink of war with the former soviet union that were scary. Donald trump should perhaps read up on that history over the christmas break and that will be a better use of his time. You may be getting a call soon. Political analysts, thanks so much. Coming up next, the latest on the berlin Christmas Market attack. That ends a week long manhunt. How he was caught and what we know about his connections. We will have live reports from rome and berlin. Plus his budding relationship with russian president Vladimir Putin. To folks out there whose diabetic nerve pain. Shoots and burns its way into your day, i hear you. To everyone with this pain that makes ordinary tasks extraordinarily painful, i hear you. Make sure your doctor hears you too i hear you because i was there when my dad suffered with diabetic nerve pain. If you have diabetes and burning, shooting pain in your feet or hands, dont suffer in silence step on up and ask your doctor about diabetic nerve pain. Tell em cedric sent you. A fourday manhunt came to i close with italian police. He was kill milan, slipping past police and stepped up border check point. Isis media tried to spin it as another attack as it released video appearing to show him declaring allegiance to the group. All this as german officials point fingers over intelligence failures to allow him to avoid deportation. Lets start in rome. Claudio, we have heard the latest details. He is accused of driving a truck into a Holiday Market in the heart of berlin and he is found and killed in milan. How did it happen . Reporter well, jake, it seems like he reached milan by train. There was a shootout outside of a local train station in the out skirts at about 3 00 in the morning. We found train tickets on him that suggested he went from german tow france and from france to italy before he boarded the train to the small town in the out skirts of milan. Once he got there, it was about 3 00 in the morning. There were two young police men on duty patrolling the area as they would every night. The guy is very quiet. I remind you, this is a quiet residential neighborhood on the out skirts of milan and not the big city itself. They went to him and said show us your id. Instead of taking the id, he pulled a gun out of the rack, shooting one policeman in the shoulder. Fortunately nonfatally. He was prompt enough to extract the pistol and fire back and shoot him right there and later it became clear it was. Questions were raised about how he was able to move across europe freely despite being the most wanted man of the week. But the other question is that italian authorities are rizing why did he go to the small town in the out skirts of milan. Why did he want to go there . Was there someone waiting for him and could have helped him in his escapism. So many questions unanswered. Thank you so much in rome. Berliners are remembering the 12 killed and dozens others who are injured in mondays attack. Dash cam video show how fast that truck was going when it got into the market. Msnbcs matt bradley is in berlin. We have been following your coverage. Officials have been scrambling to answer questions over failures that allowed this man to avoid deportation for a year and a half. Seems like an extraordinary amount of time. Where does the investigation stand right now . Its not so much into his past that people are looking into. Germans are focusing on the german future and what happened. They are trying to take apart exactly why this man who had been identified by police not only as a criminal had spent 3. 5 years in jail in sicily. Why was he allowed to roam free throughout europe and germany . There was surveillance on him for several months and lifted when it netted little in the way of terrorist activity. He followed a lot of the profile that a lot of these lone wolf terrorists have. Less on the extremist islam side and more on the petty crime side. He dealt drugs, alcohol abuse, kind of running with gangs and that sort of thing. A lot of germans are asking for a very thorough examination of exactly what went wrong and angela merkel, the chancellor said she will be doing an evaluation of all of germanys aspect terrorist efforts and looking into it and publishing it and trying to evaluate how to improve and how mistakes were made. The Christmas Market and the dash cam flying through is horrific. We are two days away from christmas for germany, this is an important time of year for us here in america. How are people feeling where you are . As you noticed, christmas is in full swing. This is full lights. Everybody is drinking mulled wine. I had my. Eating bratwurst. I wouldnt say cheery, but its christmassy. People are trying to huf from the mourning stage into the defiant stage. We are seeing shrines not just the large one over my Left Shoulder with candles and flowers and things like that, but the little shrines throughout the entire plots that im standing in. People here, they are really trying to eek out whatever christmas they can amidst the somber mood. Grateful to have you there and your reporting. Matt bradley in berlin. It was a decision that flies in the face of president elect trumps rhetoric. President elect trump flexed his own muscles over talk of nuclear armament. The tweet seen around the world, the u. S. Might greatly strengthen and expand Nuclear Capability until such time as the world comes to its senses regarding nukes. Democratic congresswoman donna edwards. Before we get to the nuclear discussion, i want to get your reaction to the vote on the United Nations this afternoon. The ambassador said the Obama Administration has been trying to send a message that settlement growth has to stop. How powerful was it sent today and was it the right . I do think it was and it was a powerful statement. She clearly articulated that the position of the United States was not supporting the bad acting that came from the palestinians or in some cases from the israelies. Settlement development is an impediment to moving forward and that has been the policy across republican and democratic administrations. It is the policy of the United Nations and think the United States took its last step having warned israel about those actions over a period of time. What would you say to that . The statement if they listen carefully to the ambassador, she was very clear in saying that the United States stands with israel as the only democracy in the region and recognizing that the development and escalation of that under Prime Minister netanyahu really flies in the face of i thought it was a measured statement and clear that it was not that gets in the way on the lasting piece. The president elects tweet sounded like nuclear proliferation. This morning sean spicer was all over saying this was only meant to send a tough message. Take a look at this. If there is going to be an arms race there is not going to be. Heres my point. There is not going to be because he will ensure that other countries get the message he will not allow that. Whats going to happen is they will come to their senses and we will be just fine. Is that how you see this playing out on an International Scale . No and i dont think Foreign Policy should be done by tweet or in the mode of we will be just fine. I thought this was a really irresponsible statement and the president elect and i want to give him that student, but he has to get off of twitter. Thats not a way to conduct Foreign Policy. The president elect was starting an arms race. Donna edwards, thank you for joining us. Happy holidays. Happy holidays. The president elects tweet opened up a new conversation even among republicans about where policy may be headed. Joining me now is former bushcheney adviser and back on the campaign trail, i remember this well. Take a look. This is not someone who should ever have the nuclear codes. Because its not hard to imagine donald trump leading us into a war just because somebody got under his very thin skin. Taken around that same time, americans did not have faith in his Decision Making when it comes to nukes. Do you think that the recent tweet will lead to a jittery nation over the holidays or are we blowing this out of proportion . A couple of things, lets respect the american voter. President elect trump won. He won pretty handly. A lot of people would disagree with secretary clinton. Senator schumer and others say listen, we need to be thoughtful about the Foreign Policy. We need to think these through. This is nuanced and by default, american policy has always been at least since the 1950s to the president disarming and to make sure that the warheads get reduced as opposed to increased to make sure there is no nuclear arms race. You go back to reagan and nixon and ford and carter. Going down the list. Republican and democratic president s have said the more Nuclear Weapons in this world is probably not a good thing. He needs to rethink what he is saying unless he knows something we dont know. I am giving the benefit of the doubt. I hope he would be thoughtful about the conversation. Depending on where we look, the inventory has more than 73 hundred helped of them. The United States has just below 7,000. No other country has more than 300. Its a remarkable difference. Is there an argument for expanding the arsenal . Im trying to understand the trump doctrine and what it truly is. If he has one and i think he owes it to the American People and the world to explain what that is. To your point, you raise a few moments ago that we have quite a bit of nuclear arsenal. When you look at the capability through submarines and so forth, russia has the same thing. Thats pretty clear. He was up front about his attitude long before election day. Anderson cooper was asking if japan and others should build up an arsenal. Heres what he said. At some point we have to say you know what, we are better off if japan protects itself against this maniac in north korea and if south korea protects itself. Saudi arabia, absolutely. You are okay with them having Nuclear Weapons . Not Nuclear Weapons. They have to protect themselves or pay us. They have to pay us or let them protect themselves. Before we have to go, let me get your take. Whether you agree or disagree with the take on nuclear armament, should anybody be surprised . He has been relatively straight forward about the views including right there. Yes, but it defies history. In 1945, we disarmed japan because of world war ii for a reason. We have a Permanent Base in japan. It doesnt jive with history a it doesnt jive with u. S. Foreign policy. Im a bit confused. Robert, thank you very much. Happy holidays to you as well, sir. Same to you. Headlines from around the count radiory and very important look at the holiday weather. This is Master Sergeant donald current. Im currently located in bahrain and we want to wish our family and friends happy holidays from oklahoma. Love and miss you all. Have a good one. Everything your family touches sticks with them. Make sure the germs they bring home dont stick around. Use clorox disinfecting products. Because no one kills germs better than clorox. As after a dvt blood clot, ital i sure had a lot to think about. What about the people i care about . Including this little girl. And what if this happened again . I was given warfarin in the hospital, but wondered, was this the best treatment for me . So i asked my doctor. And he recommended eliquis. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. Yes, eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots. Eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Both made me turn around my thinking. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots. Plus had less major bleeding. Both made eliquis the right treatment for me. Ask your doctor if switching to eliquis is right for you. Step forward for eradicating ebola. Thissa a study calls a new vaccine highly effective. Although it is still awaiting approval, they are available for use in emergency situations. Now to politics. Inauguration is not until january 20th, but we are getting a sneak peek of what too expect. Donald trump tweeted this. The socalled alist celebrities are all wanting tix, but look at what they did for hillary. Nothing. I want the people. He wants the people. Joining me now is Washington Post White House Reporter David Nakamura and the host of the slate daily podcast. I want to start with you. When it comes to the inauguration, he is a man of the people and wants everybody to believe that. He was going after zajay z. When you lost the rockets, it may be a problem. There are conflicting problems about whether they were asked to perform and some said they dont want to and they may not be asked to perform. Its not clear. As he intends to get ready of the reports that say they dont want to perform or arent going to. This is where we are with partisanship. There is a lot of excitement about these things. Beyonce serenaded him and his wife for the first dance at the event. I think trump has shown at the convention that does want celebrities there, even if b or c list. We will see if he gets some out there. I remember having the same conversation before the republican convention. Is any of this sour grapes . Remember he had the donald trump celebrities at the rnc including the one and only scott baio. The only way he is on the b list is alphabet cal. Didnt some golfer show up . Possibly. Heres the thing. Yes, of course he has not just celebrities, but performers will turn it down. Isnt there a group thing to it . A case can be made that you should play the inauguration because its the inauguration of the president. I wouldnt want people to go against their beliefs, but i remember when hamilton happened and pence was lectured and this is not what performers should do. Im not advising anyone to go against their conscious, but if you are in the hollywood or Music Community saying we worry about backlash in that community, maybe someone can say a message or two that this is for the country and not the individual. Heres the song to unite us. As i know as a matter of fact as a viewer and a member of my favorite, is there a fear that there will be i want to change and talk about the press. Im at the inauguration and this is something we talked about a lot. Limited press access for daily briefings and limited access for the traveling press pool. For anybody, what is the likelihood of this happening . Reince priebus and the chief of staff and others decide they want to blow the koconvention wn he was asked formal questions for an hour or more and doesnt give a lot of great answers. Sometimes we agree with that, but i think the white house correspondence is objecting to some of the changes. Changing up the seating which the White House Press decides among ourselves and who sits where. The question of whether we will have the daily access and especially traveling pool with the chief elected officer of the United States everywhere he goes outside the white house. It always has been our position as the white house correspondence that we want eyes on the president any time he is outside the white house grounds. Administrations have abided by that. We will fight back a bit if we try to make the changes. Not that anywhere cares what i think, but here here. From slates daily podcast, has been holidays to you guys. I want to get in the weather. More than 103 million americans most ever are expected to travel this Holiday Weekend and as we head out, the big question is what is the weather going to be like . Dave . Heres a look at todays forecast. We have a mix through sections of plains states. The u. S. Will see sloppy weather as well and california particularly rainy up to sections of oregon and washington. The system will bring with it sloppy weather and watches and warnings in effect through to the midwest before monday. Upwards of 15 inches of snow in some areas. We see shower activity up and down the 95 corridor and florida looks terrific. Nice and warm and the low pressure system will advance eastward. That is going to bring sloppy weather and blizzardlike conditions in sections of the northern plainsas we head to christmas. Expect the blizzards for the dakotas and oklahoma and kansas. Thats a quick look at the weather. You did not mention 56 degrees in my hometown of sunny los angeles, california. Dave price, thank you so much. Im dreaming of a White Christmas crosby debuted the song White Christmas on december 25th, 1941 on the, you guessed it, nbc radio network. One of the many traditions of christmas culture. Ace collins is the author of the most wonderful time of the year. He joins me to talk about the unknown stories. You can trace the dna to the king who developed to the children. They werent supposed to come out until june and because of americas entry into world war ii. Bing crosby debuted it to kind of serve as a way to encourage people to believe that there would still be christmas and still be peace on earth. There are so many different years and not knowing whats coming home. There is a clip of have yourself a merry Little Christmas. How can i not. Take a listen to this. Have yourself a merry Little Christmas let your heart be light next year all its from meet me in st. Louis. The lyrics are uifts and sentimental. They didnt start that way. You heard the lyrics about next year. The original lyrics that judy garland refused to record said this may be christmas last, next year we may be living in the past. She wouldnt cut that for a year at war. That was too dark and hopeless. She gave america hope and that became one of three monster hits to come out of world war ii. The other is ill be home for christmas. It was a stock measured for onetime only. That was at the church, st. Nicholas 200 years ago. That shows the power of one man and his ability to give the word out and tell the world about one important thing he discovered.
