North carolina this evening. Meanwhile, Vice President pence and senator Kamala Harris also hit the campaign trail this holiday weekend. Both talking to voters in the state of wisconsin. Coronavirus clearly taking center stage as the two campaigns clash over a potential vaccine. The president again linking a vaccine to election day. But both Health Experts and senator harris say not so fast. I think that we have learned since this pandemic started, but really before that, that theres very little that we can trust that comes out of Donald Trumps mouth. Our team is on the ground with the latest. Mike memoli in d. C. , Josh Lederman in jupiter, florida and Shannon Pettypiece standing nearby the white house. Joe biden says postlabor day, thats now, he plans on doing a lot more traveling. Whats in store . Yeah, steph. In fact, even President Trump taking note of joe bidens busier campaign itinerary tweeting about it this morning. In fact, what did we see yesterday, steph . Joe biden though campaign trail in pennsylvania. His running mate Kamala Harris making her first solo road trip to the battleground state of wisconsin. Where was President Trump . He was the one home with that hastily called News Conference at the white house. What did we see from biden on the campaign trail . Not doing the kind of rallies, we shouldnt expect the campaign for him to hold the Traditional Campaign rallies, but what he was doing was socially distant roundtable discussions on the economy. Its that issue that the Biden Campaign says he wants to focus on in the coming weeks contrasting his build back better economic plan with what he himself has said is a trump economic plan which prioritizes only those shareholders rather than ordinary working class voters. And i think the template we saw was joe biden doing local interviews. I mentioned that trump tweet about bidens campaign itinerary. It will finally give voters a chance to see that hes not all there. Biden firing back in one of those local interviews saying, hey if you want to talk about somebody who has lost a step, take a look at me. See me on the campaign trail. Walking up and running up ramps comparing that to President Trump. The other way biden is really taking the advantage at this point is on the campaign air waves. His campaign is out with a brandnew ad today which really highlights the choice it says voters are facing this november. It says weve had enough of a president for four years who has brought out the worst in america. Isnt it time to have a president who brings out the best. Thats the message from the Biden Campaign now in this critical mopostlabor day stret. Josh, lets talk about President Trumps message. Jupiter, florida. Who is he speaking to, white, wealthy golfers . Well, officially, stephanie, President Trump is here to tout what he sees as a strong environmental record, including the Great American outdoors act that he signed into law a couple of weeks ago that had funding for conservation efforts here. Biden and democrats will point out the Trump Administration has rolled back nearly every major environmental step that was taken in the Obama Administration in the years past. But its no surprise that trump is back here in florida, a make or break state for either candidate. And trump is playing defense here. He has been behind in the poles in florida ever since biden became the presumptive nominee back in april. But those polls are very close. Its always been about a three or fourpoint margin. Neither side are taking this for granted. This, of course, also is trumps adopted home county after he moved from new york to florida not too long ago. And just to show you how thing have changed, the last time that President Trump was here in the county was way back in march. At that time, he met with bolsonaro, the brazilian leader. Said he was not concerned about coronavirus getting closer to the white house. In the months since florida has been hit hard by the pandemic, somewhere in the neighborhood of 12,000 deaths, that is obviously weighing very heavily on the minds of voters, and its an argument the Biden Campaign plans to hit hard saying that trump has failed floridians with his response to covid. Well see how trump counters that message when he speaks at the lighthouse in jupiter, florida, just behind me. Shannon, the president is still facing fallout from the reporting that he called fallen servicemen and women suckers and losers. Im sure the white house wants to shake this story. They cant. How are they handling it now, five days later . Its still on the front page of papers. Right. Well, this heavy response from the president , the white house, his allies, his campaign shows how damaging they see this could be. Even before this report came out theres some indications of the president s support among the military and active duty members of the military softening. A military times poll showing only 38 of active duty military members approved of a job the president was doing. As you mention, the president was on the defense addressing this report in theheres what yesterday. Who would say a thing like that . Only an animal would say a thing like that. Theres nobody that has more respect for not only our military but for people that gave their lives in the military. Steph, i will note that he went on, though, to essentially accuse military leaders of engaging in wars and conflicts, so risking troops lives, to sell more bombs and equipment and make money essentially was an accusation he lobbed against the leaders of our military. So at the same time, he is defending his support for the military, his denying these comments, he went on to insult essentially military leaders which is something that has been picked up. And weve been seeing a lot of criticism over those remarks, too. Well, ive got to dig a lot deeper into that, shannon. Thank you. I want to bring in congresswoman from the state of new jersey, mikey cher rol, a former Navy Helicopter pilot. All of these military headlines matter a lot to her. Congresswoman, thank you so much for joining me. I havent spoken to you in quite some time. You are one of the first people i thought of when i read that reporting. What President Trump had to say about fallen servicemen and women. Whats your take . Well, stephanie it was horrible to see the comments of the president. But it wasnt the first time hes really been denigrating to service members. His comments on john mccain, on gold star families like kazir khans. Its been a pattern from this president of a real disrespect and real lack of understanding for why we in the military and why veterans really revere gold star families and hold to a higher standard our p. O. W. S and people who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Shannon mentioned it a moment ago. The president also leveled new attacks against military leaders. What do you think . Its striking. Even when hes saying hed never Say Something like that, he cant help himself but to attack military members. He doesnt understand the military. Hes not fit to be the commander in chief of the United States. He doesnt understand words like integrity and responsibility and sacrifice. And so even as hes trying to suggest that he respects the military he cant help but then disrespect them. Lets talk about coronavirus relief. The Senate Returns today after several weeks, and we still have no new Economic Relief plan. Is there nothing that you can get consensus on . People are really struggling. I totally agree. Things like my s. M. A. R. T. Act that ive introduced. Senator menendez and senator cassidy have it in the senate. Im leading it with congressman pete king from long island, a republican from long island. We need to get that introduced. We need to start passing state and local government funding. Direct state and local government funding. There are so many ways our states are struggling, and its on the backs of the people. Its really critical as we try to get kids back to school. As we try to make sure our First Responders have ppe. As were trying to make sure our businesses have the support they need. Its critical we get the state and local funding to our states. Are we doing what we need to do now . Think about today. Youre a mother of four. Im a mother of three. All sorts of kids going back to school in person and virtually. Yet even kids who are going back virtually, their working parents are going to work today while their kids are home alone going to school. Is that the right are we doing enough . Are we considering all americans who are dealing with coronavirus . Stephanie, this is the thing that angers me the most. Because we have not had the appropriate federal response to coronavirus, because the president has refused to follow the cdc guidelines and refused to help put out best practices. Refused to start the defense production act to have ppe gear and ventilators. Hes doing this on the backs of our children. I have four kids. My district is not going back to inperson schooling. Im working. Im supposed to be shepherding my children as they start School Thursday and friday. Im also supposed to be at about 20 other events as in the district and virtually. Im going back into session next week. Ill be taking some number of my children down there with me to try to keep them on track. As my husband tries to help out with the other kids. And many families are doing this with single parents, people who have to be in person working at their job. This is unacceptable. And a lot of this has to do with the failure to appropriately address the Public Health concerns. Well, the president says hes taking the high road by not meeting with democrats to discuss more coronavirus relief. Whats your reaction to that, given your personal situation with your own kids and that you know whats happening to so many other parents out there. I dont even know what that means. I dont understand how not meeting with people to try to get better support for our citizens. Better support for this country, better Food Assistance to kids who are going hungry now. I dont understand how that would in any way be taking the high road. That does not make stoeense to. Youve also got people in your district, a lot of suburban people in your district, who arent suffering financially. Working from home actually is pretty good for them. Theyre not paying commuting costs and theyre invested in the stock market, even if they arent active investors, theyve got retirement accounts. And the president tells them theyre going to lose those savings if hes not in office. The riots theyre seeing in kenosha will end up in places like montclair, new jersey. Are there people listening to that . Is that working in your district . Lets make no mistake about it, these riots have happened on his watch. And places where we have great relationships between the police and the community they serve and we dont have federal Law Enforcement officers coming and addressing this in a way thats not comfortable for the community. Weve had largely peaceful protests across new jersey. Even in my hometown of montclair we have the Police Engaging with the protest organizers, ensuring that people can safely exercise their First Amendment rights. This president has had so many opportunities to unite this nation, to bring people together, to address the concerns that the nation has and heal the nation. And instead he has done the exact opposite. He has incited more chaos because he thrives on chaos. Hes incited more division in this country, and were seeing it across the nation. Now he somehow wants to say hes the only person that can fix it. That is not true. We need a healer and uniter like joe biden. We need someone who is going to come in and really help this nation move forward in a way we so want to see it move forward and the only person that can do that is joe biden. That is not the president s forte. Well, our country certainly doesnt thrive in chaos. Congresswoman, always good to see you. Good luck with backtoschool. Its really complicated. I really need it. Thank you, stephanie. You, too. And take care. Thank you. Most of the damage has been caused by three main fires, including the creek fire, which still has not been contained at all. Nbcs Miguel Almaguer is in fresno, california, which is being ravaged by that fire. Miguel, what is going on . The fact we hear about a fire this big thats not being contained, thats got us worried. Yeah, stephanie. These are some of the most epic fire conditions weve ever seen on the front lines. Whats driving this fire is this massive forest that has been drought stricken for decades and these flames are ripping across this area. Theyve charred more than 135,000 acres. Theyre also being fueled by hot temperatures and low humidity. So the fire is exploding across the region. Firefighters are having a very difficult time keeping this blaze in check. As a matter of fact, i want to talk about the fires across the state. Theres nearly two dozen wildfires that have charred 2 million acres so far. Thats a record here in california, and were heading into the most dangerous weeks and months ahead. September and october are typically the most dangerous times for wildfire season. What were seeing here could be a prelude to a real disaster yet to unfold, stephanie, the Fresno National guard just rescued 13 people from the Sierra National forest. I know you spoke to at least one. What did you learn . Yeah, those rescue teams had pulled people off of a mountain. They flew through smoke and flames to reach them. As you mentioned, 13 of them were just pulled off the mountain. We just got worried that another 11 have also been pulled down. Thats two dozen people. We spoke to one of those evacuees a short time ago. Heres what he had to say. How scary was this whole thing . Oh its lifechanging. You dont think that that man had been trapped in that fire phone for four days. He was with a family of eight. He said five people were literally sleeping and living inside his car. He was reached for safety. The good news, were told dozens more people are still trapped but theyre all safe. They just need to come down off that mountain and thats whats happening now. Air rescue teams are in the air trying to reach them. Miguel, thank you. Please, be safe where you are. Coming up next the House Oversight Committee Launching a new investigation into postmaster general. A bombshell report saying when he was running a private business, he pushed his employees to donate to the republican party. Well have that and more on the other side of the break. Im hector. Im a delivery Operations Manager in san diego, california. Weve had a ton of obstacles in finding ways to be more sustainable for a big company. I love being outdoors, running in nature. We have two daughters. I want to do everything i can to protect the environment to make sure they see the same beauty ive seen in nature. My goal is to lead projects that affect the world. I know that to be great requires hard work. My gbefore money, peoplects ttools, cattle, grain, even shells represented value. Then currency came along. They made it out of copper, gold, silver, wampum. Soon people decided to put all that value into a piece of paper, then proceeded to wave goodbye to value, printing unlimited amounts of money as they passed the buck to the future. Thats why its time for Digital Currency and your investment in the grayscale funds. Go digital. Go grayscale. Weve got breaking news this morning. The House Oversight Committee Launching a new independent investigation into postmaster general louis dejoy and calling for his immediate suspension. The move comes after a bombshell report in the Washington Post quoting former employees in North Carolina who say dejoy pressured them to making donations to republican candidates. And then he later reimbursed them through business bonuses. Such an arrangement would be considered illegal. President trump was asked about this reporting during his labor day News Conference. And heres what he had to say. Proven to be a Campaign Finance scheme, do you think he should lose his job . Yeah, if something could be proven that he did something wrong, always. Geoff bennett has been following this story from the beginning and joins us now. What in the world is going on here . Hey, steph. House democrats are launching an investigation into this Washington Post reporting that postmaster general louis dejoy, not only pressured his former employees at newbreed logistics to make donations to his preferred gop candidates but that he also reimbursed them for those donations through bonuses which, if true, would be illegal. Carolyn maloney, congresswoman carolyn maloney, is also calling on the Postal Service board of governors to suspend louis dejoy. And she says that dejoy faces criminal exposure on two fronts. One for this alleged scheme but also potentially lying to congress. And at issue is this exchange between dejoy and congressman jim cooper, democrat from tennessee. Take a look at this. Did you pay back several of your top executives for contributing to Trumps Campaign by bonusing or rewarding them . Thats an outrageous claim, sir, and i rezents it. Im just asking a question. The answer is no. So you did not bonus or reward any of your executives no. Anyone that you solicited for a contribution to the Trump Campaign . No, sir. He says flatly three or four times, no, no, i did not do the thing im alleged to have done. The Washington Post spoke with five former employees who say, in fact, he did do that. And they also have the companys former head of hr on the record saying thats precisely what happened. Now i spoke to a personal spokesperson for louis dejoy, and in a statement, this person says he regrets if any employee felt uncomfortable for any reason, thats a direct quote. But the spokesperson did not deny the main thrust of the reporting here by the Washington Post laying out this alleged scheme. Steph . Okay. Then lets say this alleged scheme hand. Why didnt democrats pursue this before confirming him for the job . All of this took place before he was made postmaster general. It was the board of governors that approved him for the job. Dejoy was never confirmed by congress. And so whats happening is a lot of this investigating is happening in realtime because, again, dejoy was never on the short list when steve mnuchin, allegedly, interfered in this process and he miraculously became the postmaster general. What you have in many cases are senator gary peters on the senate side and congresswoman maloney and jerry connolly, democrats in the house and senate, learning about dejoy, learning about his former Business Practices in realtime and now having to catch up and launch investigations to find out whats what, steph. Ahha. It was the board of governors. So theyve got a lot of questions to answer now. Geoff, thank you for this great reporting on this really important story. Joining us now is the attorney general of the state of North Carolina, josh stein. Im so glad youre with us this morning because Chuck Schumer says you are the exact right person to lead an investigation on this. So where does it stand . Well, first of all, the idea that somebody would make a contribution and then be reimbursed by a corporation or individual, thats a straw donor, that would be a violation of the law. And, clearly, any credible allegations along those lines need to be investigated to determine whether the law was violated. Whether its state law or federal. So theres a role for federal and state authorities. In North Carolina, the state board of elections is the organization that investigates Campaign Finance violations. And then theyll make a referral to a district attorney. I am the counsel to the state board and sometimes i will assist local district attorneys in prosecuting cases. Therefore, i cant get into the specifics of any particular case. Can you say if youve confirmed any of the Washington Post reporting . I cant. I cant. I can just say that any allegation thats this serious merits investigation. All right. Then lets just say, its true. What the Washington Post is reporting is true and he did pressure employees and then later reimbursed them. If that were the case, what would the consequences be . To give for a corporation to reimburse an employee for a political contribution would be a felony in North Carolina. And for felonies, there are no statute of limitations. President trump suggested that voters in your state actually vote twice. You can vote by mail and then if youre not sure if it went through, even though you can actually check online, you should go and vote in person. We know what the president is suggesting. Its absolutely false. What are you doing in your state to clear up any confusion because sowing confusion doesnt help the election system. No, its a terrible thing he said. Absolutely reckless and absolutely wrong. So im using every opportunity to try to counter that message here in North Carolina as is the state board of elections. And so thank you for just saying those words. It is illegal in North Carolina to vote twice. Its also absolutely unnecessary. Were the first state in the country that has mailin ballots. They got shipped on friday. I havent gotten mine yet. I expect it to be in my mailbox today and im excited to cast my ballot for this election. But you can then track that electronically online to see that it was received. And on friday, starting friday, you can get text alerts from the state board that it was received. The idea that you would test the receipt of your ballot by voting a second time is awful. And very unfortunate because, sadly, there are north carolinians who will do what he said because the president said it. And when can we assume all of these mailin ballots, if people use them, will get counted in the state of North Carolina . Do you have the bandwidth to do so . We have a really solid Election Administration process here. As i said, the first state in the country to do mailin absentee ballot. Anyone can request it for any reason. You send it in. You can be notified electronically it was received. The state board will then tabulate the ballot before election day. The county boards of election will tabulate it before election day meaning it gets run through the scanner. It doesnt get summed up so we dont know how many votes go before election day. But it means that on election day, all they have to do is push a button and we will know who won all the early vote. 17 days of early voting in North Carolina. Who won the mailin voting up to election day and who won on election day. The only votes that will not be counted as of Election Night are those mailin ballots that came in on election day or the next three days. Those will and any provisional ballots that were cast on election day. Otherwise, we will have very fulsome results on Election Night. Sounds like the message is, if you are going to vote by mail, get it done early. Last question to you. President trump headed to your state to give a speech at the airport in winstonsalem. The local gop chair there is urging the president to wear a mask. Whats your message to him . Wear a mask. When youre in any crowd. Everyone needs to. This look. This virus has not gone away. The rates of infection remain very high. If we want to get our economy going again, if we want our my daughter is in the next room doing her schoolwork because shes not in her local public school. If we want our kids back in school, if we want sports to go full force, we need to quash this virus and that means wearing a mask, it means keeping distant from people, washing our hands, all the sensiblevo to yo. My son is one room away, and ive got a sinking feeling hes not doing his schoolwork. Thank you so much for joining me. I really appreciate it. Thanks so much. When we come back, were going to dig deeper into the latest facts on the coronavirus pandemic. Were just discussing it. Millions of students across this country are going back to school in person and virtually while more and more College Campuses are having to shut down and go virtual because they have not contained the virus. In a stunning turn of events, were seeing ceos from the largest drugmakers in this country sign a pledge that they will not push forward to rush any vaccine or seek approval unless theyve done proper, proper testing. Balanced nutrition for strength and energy. Whoohoo great tasting ensure with 9 grams of protein, 27 vitamins and minerals, and nutrients to support immune health. Welcome back. These are the latest facts on the coronavirus pandemic at this hour. In an effort to calm any fears of a vaccine being put out too early, some of the countrys most wellknown drugmakers will issue a joint pledge not to seek government approval until the shots have been proven safe and effective. Nationwide, the total number of cases has now grown to more than 6. 3 million. More than 190,000 americans have already lost their lives to this disease. And a majority of the nations students are heading back to school today. Some in person and some virtually. But the spread of the virus at schools that have already reopened is very real. West Virginia University is the latest school to suspend their inperson classes due to a spike in infections. I want to go live to my colleague Vaughn Hillyard in des moines, iowa, where cases are surging. Vaughn, lets walk through this because the governor has issued a mandate that all schools must open in person. Youre actually outside a school thats refusing the state orders and saying were putting safety first. If you need to be virtual, lets be virtual. Exactly. Today is the first day of school. The first day of school is coinicidesing with the fact that iowa is spiking in covid cases. Right now its the third highest per capita rate of positive covid cases in the country which puts these School Districts at odds directly with governor kim reynolds here who has ordered schools to have at least 50 of their classes in person. The Des Moines Public Schools here, which have more than 33,000 students, filed a lawsuit saying today theyre starting virtually. They are not coming. They are not bringing their kids onto campus. A judge is expected to rule in that very case today. I would introduce you, though, to Keshia Barnes who is a president of king elementary school. Your students are starting virtually. Weve already seen a couple of parents come up and try to receive help with getting their kids online. Why take this stand . Job number one for schools is to keep students and families safe. And staff as well. And so with covid rates in our county, we just in good conscience couldnt continue to put them in harms way which is potentially what would happen because were not able to socially distance in classrooms. Our classrooms just are too small. Tell me about your School District, your school. So we have decided that safety is first, and that students will be learning online. Have a quality start to the school year until it is safe to return back to the building. On july 1st we submitted a plan in which they were socially distanced, and we had a plan for asynchronous learning and synchronous learning. Learning online and at home. And that plan was rejected. Why for you in your School District. For most that dont know your neighborhood, tell me. Its really important because most of the students and some of the staff in Des Moines Public Schools are black and brown, and we know nationally, the numbers for serious hospitalization because of covid and covidrelated deaths are disproportionately higher nationally and locally for black and brown people. And those are facts that not everybody likes to talk about. Thanks so much. Good luck today. Good luck the rest of the week. Stephanie, the reality is that a judge is going to make this decision. This week could very well change here in Des Moines Public Schools. In the meanwhile, folks like keshia are getting backpacks ready and making sure their kids are set up with laptops and wifi back at home. Stephanie . They are dependent on the data. Vaughn, thank you. Keshia, good luck to you and your students today. I want to bring in dr. Michael osterholm, the director for the center of Infectious Diseases and research at the university of minnesota. Im so glad youre with me today. Lets start with iowa and the midwest where were seeing a surge in cases and the governor in iowa has issued a mandate demanding all schools be in person. What do you think of that . First of all, i testified on behalf of the Des Moines School district on friday before the District Court judge urging each district be allowed to determine what the best method of education would be for them. Every School District wants to educate the children. Teachers want to be in the classroom. But the reality is, when you have a house on fire like this with coronavirus, you have to consider the safety of the students, the faculty, the staff, et cetera. So i think what were asking for here is just simply reasonable. This is our covid year. Weve talked about this before on this very show. This is the year that we shouldnt have an expectation that it will be like last year or that it will be what we do next year. I think the iowa situation is an unfortunate one where i think that the politics surely played before safety. Should we have any expectations that a vaccine is coming by election day which the president continues to allude to . You know, i think at this point its fair to say that everything is being done that can be done to get a safe and effective vaccine. But i dont think anyone who is really familiar with whats happening in terms of the research would expect that the data will be sufficient before election day. What youre seeing right now is a major pushback from the Public Health community and from the manufacturers themselves saying, you know, its like the old commercial. There will be no line before its time. Theres no vaccine before its time. We have got to make sure the vaccines are as safe as we can determine and theyre as effe effective as possible. I see no way before an election day event that thats going to happen. Well, lets stay on that because these drugmakers stand to make an extraordinary amount of money when and if we get that vaccine. And to the point you just made, were seeing some of the largest ceos say, hold your horses. Were signing a pledge. Were not going to move forward unless we know this thing is safe and effective. I want to share what the ceo of pfizer said to our colleagues on the today show earlier this morning. Its an unprecedented moment. Its an historic pledge. Nine vaccinemakers are coming out saying that they will stand with science, and the world is looking to science right now. In this pledge, all the companies are saying that we will only submit for authorization when we have evidence of safety and efficacy. What is your take . The president is basically trying to hook these guys up saying well get these through and theyre publicly saying, no, thats not whats going to happen. Remember, these companies have, obviously, a bottom line, if for no other reason you can trust them. They dont want to have a problem occur later on that could damage their Company Severely with major litigation and reputational issue that would be for many decades to come. So they have every reason, if for no another you can say theyre doing it for the altruistic reason of protecting the American Public but in addition theyre protecting their companies. So i do believe they will hold to that. They will actually not let vaccines move forward because theyre ready. And thats a comforting issue for us. I think the challenge is that there still could be a decision made at some levels of government to go ahead with the vaccines which would cause, i think, an amazing collision of the companies, the regulatory process and the political field out there as to what would happen. But i believe that Public Health would stand up and make a very loud and clear message to the public, this is a vaccine you should take. It will save your life. It will protect the lives of others or its a vaccine that still may do that some day but were not ready to tell you that right now. Loud, clear and consistent messaging, michael, is something were in desperate need of when it comes to the coronavirus. Thank you so much for joining me today. Stick around. Youre going to want to hear this next conversation. One state has found a way using technology to improve their criminal Justice System. Im going to share with you the tech tools being used to keep people out of jail. Thats some good news, and an interesting one. Youre right, i sshould get a delicious footlong from subway. Welcome back. It is time to talk criminal justice reform. Because protests continue across this country to readdress our criminal Justice System. There is one issue that often gets overlooked. Recidivi recidivi recidivism. In 2016, more than 4. 5 Million People across the nation were either on probation or parole. It was the lowest number since 1999. Well, heres the problem. Our most recent data shows that five out of six of those people are going to wind up back behind bars over a nineyear period. How does this happen . Here is the thing. Millions in the United States are required to follow rules that require money, housing, transportation, access to healthcare. My next guest says we got to create a system to help people do it better. Thats where recidivism comes in. I want to bring in the founder and executive director Clementine Jacoby and dave cravenhaut of the department of corrections which has been wo working to do just that. Clementine, how does data keep people from going back to jail . Good to be here, steph. Thanks for having me. Like you said, recidiviz is a technical nonprofit. The primary thing were focused on and seem to be helpful in north dakota is making the data that the Leadership Team gets more real time. More actionable. One way to think about the situation with criminal justice data now is that, you know, it is like a report card, it is backward facing, it is stale by the time you get it, and what they really need to make decisions to set goals, to set strategic plans, to track the goals, to improve outcomes ultimately is data theyre getting in real time. Thats exactly the work that were doing with north dakota. We worked with their Leadership Team to get all of these key metrics to them in a dashboard that updates every single day. I think the other thing that is interesting about north dakota, they have chosen to make this of some data publicly available. So one of the things that you can find on their website is actually a public dashboard, thats the most comprehensive thing that we have seen any state do in terms of actually making the criminal justice Data Available to the public so they can participate in the conversation about what is happening in this state system. Take us to north dakota, how did this work, when i look at the numbers that went down 10 from 2015 to 2018, that is some really good news. Yeah, thats the first year of our relief in 2018. The first year 2015. You know, we have been fortunate we had some investment from the Community Like the program we call free to recovery and we also, you know, invested in a lot of other things, as far as supervising people in the community. We make a real effort to identify and do things that are proving now good news, initially good news, that is helping people stay in the community and become Good Neighbors which most people are coming out of north dakota, 97 they get out, theyll be your neighbors. Thats really our focus, is to make north dakota safer and make Good Neighbors for people we have under our supervision and incarceration. Clementine, across the country, more than 16,000 inmates have either been released or not sent to jail or prison because of the coronavirus pandemic. Is this a sign of what our criminal Justice System could look like in the future . Should it . I think one of the Amazing Things about covid, which has been bad in so, so, so many ways for people who are incarcerated, one of the Amazing Things is that it has shown we can thoughtfully and safely and rapidly reduce the levels of people who are in prison and jail. And so i think thats one sort of Silver Lining of covid, is just that it is demonstrated what is actually possible. At the beginning of covid, the majority of prisons and jails in the country were overcrowded. And so there was a real scary amount of uncertainty that leaders faced in trying to figure out how to balance Public Health and Public Safety and in many ways, i think the Early Releases that were done were quite conservative. And one of the reasons for that, north dakota was very early on the Early Release train. One reason is that they were able to use data to think very carefully about who should be released early and also use data to track how those people did in the community. Both compared to people who would have been released anyway and also compared to people who are released one year ago, when the economy was much more normal. North dakota was early, dave, and hopefully one of the leaders of the pack. Clementine, dave, thank you for joining me. Thank you for the work youre doing. And for you at home, thank you for watching this very busy hour. For your kids, if today is the day, welcome back to school. Good luck.
