It means trying to figure out how to do things differently because the way its working, it aint working. It comes after another weekend of massive demonstrations in the name of george floyd who died while being detained while Police Two Weeks ago. Hundreds of thousands of people gathered to demonstrate peacefully in cities Like Washington and l. A. But also in dozens of smaller towns and cities. And while the crowds are as big as ever, we are no longer seeing much in the way of clashes between police and protesters. Tensions are way down. Most citywide curfews have been lifted. And in d. C. , the National Guard has been sent home. So i want to start there. D. C. , where my colleague Garrett Haake has been covering the protest there for days. It seems like the mood has changed. And how long are those protesters planning to be there . Stephanie, the mood has definitely changed over the last few days. Over the weekend, the crowds were large, peaceful, even joyful. Essentially reclaiming this plaza back from the federal government, back from a president who many of these protesters feel like has just failed to listen to them and failed to hear any of their voices. Theyve reclaimed the fencing around lafayette park, turning what was a fence to keep them out into a reflection of their values. As for how long these protests will continue, thats tough to say but the folks i talked to said theyre committed to keeping this in the public eye. Keeping their issues in the spotlight. They dont want to see this be another kind of flash in the pan National Conversation about race that lasts as long as the television headlines go, maybe a week or so. They want to keep this as a focused, determined fight for as long as it takes. I want to ask you about mitt romney. This is a lawmaker you know very well. You covered his 2012 campaign. So while a lot of people were surprised to see him out there in d. C. Marching this weekend, tell us more about him. You know this guy. Romneys father George Romney was a moderate, arguably, liberal republican governor of michigan. Very much involved in the civil rights movement. Nothing that motivates mitt romney more than to try to live up to his fathers example. You saw that yesterday. I think you saw a person trying to extend the fight that his father started, someone who does believe in equality. And is willing to put shoes to pavement and come out here and prove it. Ive not seen that from any other elected lawmaker with the exception of will hurd, the retiring congressman who protested down in texas. Romney putting his beliefs out there on the street with the rest of these protesters yesterday. All right. Garrett, thank you. I want to take you to minneapolis where a majority of the city council, listen close to this has agreed to dismantle the citys police force. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez is there. Gabe, what exactly does that mean . Hi there, stephanie. Good morning. Certainly this san idea that started gaining traction late last week. Over the weekend, a vetoproof majority of the Minneapolis City Council came out and pledged to dismantle the Minneapolis Police department. President trump tweeting about it such a short time ago this morning. What will this all mean . Well, Certain City Council members say this does not mean abolishing the Police Department entirely but basically breaking it down, dismantling it and building it back up. Now what would that look like . Thats the big question at this point. They are asking for input from the public and it could take up to a year for them to figure out how this will work. Some of the ideas being tossed around is perhaps getting hiring more Mental Health counselors for 911 calls that involve Mental Health instead of relying solely on the police. And this is something thats starting to play out really across the country. Major cities such as new york announcing shifts in Police Funding nfund ing in order to be able to send more funds to youth and social services. Certainly this is a question that is being thats playing out in municipalities across the country. But here in minneapolis, again, nine members of the city council say they plan to dismantle the Police Department over the next year. Gabe, thank you. Over the weekend, we saw a lot of signs from people calling to defund Police Departments. It does not mean taking away all of the departments funding, making people lose their jobs and pensions. It means taking some money from the Police Budget and putting it into Community Programs instead. The idea is that by building up communities, you reduce the need for Law Enforcement in the first place. Right now i want to bring in a man who knows all about this. Bill bratton. He served two terms as the commissioner of the nypd. Before that, commissioner of the boston pd and the chief of los angeles Police Department. Hes currently the chairman of tedeo risk. People want to make sure police have all the resources they need to keep us safe. But the idea of defunding the Police Department is actually to make us safer. Can you explain this . Well, stephanie, building on your comments, lets all take a deep breath. Were not talking about abolishing the police. Theres nothing new about these demands, if you will. Its been happening the whole 50 years ive been associated with policing. The movement of resources from agency to agency and government goes on all the time. New york city, case in point. At one time, the traffic agents belonged to another agency. Laws change all the time. Police get asked to enforce. So what were effectively talking about, 50 states, over 3,000 counties, tens of thousands of communities as they go into the budget cycle. Theyll have to make a determination, where do we want to put our scarce budget dollars in the midst of the coronavirus if they want to move resources into social service agencies. Well, isnt that what government is supposed to do . Isnt that what our elected officials are supposed to do . Lets all take a step back, take a deep breath. In our country, the issue is we dont have National Policies that dictate what every Police Department in the country can do other than our constitution. So it really is up to local cities and towns to make a determination. Where do they want to put their money . Lets take a deep breath. The sky is not falling. Police are not going to all of a sudden disappear from americas streets. They are an essential part of government. Theyre constantly evolving. Constantly changing. Im looking at this over the arc of 50 years. Where we were is not where we are and where we are is not where the public is saying they want us to be. Well, do you believe this concept works . If you build up neighborhood programs that are helping people in the neighborhood, youre not going to need all the policing. Does it work . Exactly. Well, the irony is you can look to new york city. 2014. I came in as police commissioner. We had the eric garner incident mid2014. After ferguson, there was an explosion nationally around this issue. Mayor de blasio put hundreds of millions of dollars into the nypd and city council to fund deescalation training. To fund implicit bias training. To fund use of force training. And that was a reallocation of resources at that time for those issues. This has been happening throughout my 50year career. Theres nothing new about it. The good news now is that theres a national movement. The bad news is that the national level, youre not going to see significant leadership in the sense of developing National Policies and guidelines, similar to what we did back in the 90s. Similar to what we did after 9 11 dealing with counterterrorism issues. And so going forward, there will be positive change, but this idea of even the terminology, defunding the police, its just confusing the public. But, sir, if these tactics have been going on for years, this deescalation and its working, why are we seeing what we are . You said it. You were there when eric garner died, and whether or not bill de blasio put an enormous amount of resources forward, youve seen the videos over the last week. Were seeing police use excessive force. Let me give you some examples. The prison population in the state of new york is down by over 50 over the last number of years as a result of some of the reforms. Rikers back in 1994, the average daily population of the city jail was 22,000 people. Right now its about 4,000. These are reforms that government and the police have engaged in. Decriminalization. Crime in new york city is down 80 to 90 . Homicides down almost 90 from 2243 in 1990 to this year about 300. So the reforms are working in many respects. Have they solved the problem . Not at all. Have they lensed tensions . Quite clearly. Some assecities, certainly not. But lets not get this idea that nothing has changed. A lot has changed and hopefully will change going forward. Were constantly evolving. Were not going to just snap our fingers and its going to be a new world. A lot of hard work. Its going to take a lot of hard work. Were all going to have to try to find Common Ground we can get on and decide, what do we want our Police Departments to look like . What do we want our communities to look like . Effectively, a lot of the violence that we saw early on, these demonstrations become much more meaningful and impactful as they become much more focused. Sir, as you said, we need to cut the rhetoric and not necessarily use words that get people so panicked. But what do you do when its the president pushing it . I mean, earlier today, it was the president himself who wrote, law and order. Not defund and abolish the police. Thats the president. Isnt that part of the problem . Isnt that part of the problem . Well see what happens come the fall whether that part of the problem is resolved in a different way. We will see. And the only way were going to get through it, sir, is if we do it together constructively. Thank you for joining me. Exactly. Together. Now lets take you to houston, texas, where there will be a public viewing of George Floyds body later today. My colleague Priscilla Thompson is there. What kind of crowd are we expecting . Stephanie, were expecting more than 90degree weather here in houston today, but the pastor of the fountain of praise tell us that wont stop likely thousands of people from turning out to view George Floyds body and pay their respects to him. And as a reminder, in north carolina, we saw folks begin to line up more than an hour beforehand and were expecting that could happen again today until the church tells us that emts will be on standby in case there are any issues around heat exhaustion. And theyre also going to be taking those precautions once folks go inside the church. So theyre going to be doing temperature checks and have folks wearing masks. And we expect those precautions will also extend into that private Funeral Service thats going to be held here on tuesday. And we actually just learned that a number of gospel artists are going to be here to pay tribute to george floyd, including Yolanda Adams and kim burrell. And reverend al sharpton will be delivering that eulogy on tuesday, stephanie. Priscilla, thank you. The public viewing at tomorrows funeral will be the culmination of days of services remembering george floyd. On saturday, a memorial was held near floyds birthplace in north carolina. The local sheriff there spoke and he described how it feels to be in Law Enforcement right now. I dreamed about being a Law Enforcement officer ever since i was 10 years old. But that dream is now turning into a nightmare. Now a nightmare. I want to bring in the sheriff of hoke county, north carolina. What did you mean when you said your dream is now a nightmare . Let me tell you about that dream. First of all, let me thank you guys for having me on. When i was a kid, i just wanted to love and save people and help people. I can remember when i was about 5, 6 years old, my mother woke me up on the couch. And i was laying there, and when she woke me up, that was the day that dr. Martin luther king was killed. And i sat there in that chair looking at that tv trying to understand what happened. And i asked my mom because they were talking about all the good things he had done. I said why would they kill someone thats doing such good . And she said, son, theres a lot of bad people in the world. She tried to explain it to my 6yearold mind. I couldnt help but think, what could i have done, if i could have, to help him. So i started thinking about helping him, doing things to save lives and so by the age of 10, i knew this is what i wanted to do. And i walked into it with the mindset this was going to be good. And i remember what Law Enforcement were in the community. There was so much love and trust between the two. So i came in, in 1987. But every time i look at this stuff that im looking at now, it hurts me to my heart. I lose sleep at night thinking about the things thats going on. I wrote a book in 2018 trying to get to the bottom of this, trying to remind officers weve got to do the right thing. Not sometimes, but all the time. I even talked to the community about trying to make sure that they knew what to do and how to deal with officers because that their needs to be a Mutual Respect in this type of situation. Then if you were instructing a new class of Police Officers, black or white about how to do their job effectively at this moment in time, whats your advice . First thing, i would ask the question, why do you want to do this . I do the final interview on my agency. Youve got to ask that question, and then youve got to ask them, how do you feel about use of force . How do you feel about deadly force . Those are very important questions. Youve got people youll find that i have done interviews. Theyll say what i always told myself in a uniform and this is not about wearing a uniform. Wearing that gun. Youve got to have some principles, integrity, know that youll be held accountable. Know when you take that oath, you are taking the oath not just for saying that you want to be a Police Officer or sheriff. That oath is saying youre going to protect and respect all races of all status. Thats what that oath means. So if im teaching a class, i would first give those questions. And then you give scenarios to them and see if they understand those things. Dealing with some of the levels of force is something we always want to teach. The first level of force is your conversation. A lot of times you can defuse problems by how you talk to people. You cant walk up to a person with an attitude because you have a badge and gun on. It happens so much out there. Youve got to lead with your heart and mind. Shfr sheriff, thank you so much for your work and for your words. Were going to leave it there. Still ahead with so much uncertainty in this country right now, theres a feeling that people dont want to spend money. A brandnew nbc news poll shows the true state of the economy. When things feel so out of control, people tend to stay home and save. Plus, cities and states continue to reopen, even as the cases of coronavirus are going up. As protesters continue to take to the streets, the coronavirus threat persists and millions of people are still out of work. This morning, uncertainty is gripping our nation. A new nbc news wall street journal poll finds that 80 of voters feel that our country is out of control. And 54 believe it will take a year or more to contain the virus and get the economy back to normal. These numbers did emerge before the surprising jobs report on friday which found the United States added 2. 5 million jobs in may, what the president called the greatest comeback in american history. And im going to tell you that is factually incorrect. Joining us to dig into that, economic professor of Harvard University and former chair of the White House Council of economic advisers. Jason, first, there was confusion about what the actual jobs number was and possibly an omission. You want to walk us through this . Sure. One is the total number of jobs. That went up 2. 5 million. Theres no confusion about that. That one is also down 19. 5 million since february. No confusion about that either. The Unemployment Rate is a little bit trickier because its hard when you ask people a series of questions. You want to make sure you dont count somebody unemployed if theyre just on vacation for the week or Something Like that. And that set of questions got administered in a confusing way. There seemed to have been an error. I think the bls was completely honest, straightforward and nonpolitical about the way they handled it. Their headline was 13. 3 unemployment. 16 was probably a little bit more realistic measure. Although both of those were enormously high, both of those were also down from april. Okay. 2. 5 million jobs back. Thats a big number. People are happy about it. But the reason i wanted you here today is that you said to us weeks ago were going to see a positive number. People are going to be surprised, and it will give them some sense of false hope. When you go from april when things were completely shut down and then the country starts to reopen, naturally were going to have a big comeback when suddenly doctors, dentists are open again and restaurants are open for business. Yeah, thats exactly right. The easiest growth were ever going to have in this country is the sort of lowest hanging fruit of people returning to their jobs in may who werent in their jobs in april. I expect were going to see more of that next month as well. But still the underlying Unemployment Rate, even everyone who was temporarily laid off got back to work, would be at a recession level and this happened with enormous amounts of government assistance. Government assistance to individuals, to businesses. Some assistance but not nearly enough to states. And if that assistance ends and its scheduled to end in the next month, or two. Then a lot of these gains would be jeopardized. Because the number was so good, the stock market, which isnt the economy, is doing so well and the president ran quite a big victory lap on friday. Will that give republicans a pass that they dont need to continue this fiscal stimulus because theyll say, look, were aokay . Yeah, if you woke up and told somebody the Unemployment Rate is 13. 3 or if you measure it the other way, 16 , is the economy in great shape and it doesnt need any help . Or is the economy at the highest Unemployment Rate of any month since the Great Depression with one exception, which is april 2020 . The second is the correct interpretation. Unfortunately, i do think among some republicans, this has taken some of the momentum out of their efforts to help the economy. And that will be counterproductive. Complacency right now is a real danger that we face when it comes to reopening the economy and continuing the policies we really need to continue. It isnt the greatest economy ever. It wasnt before we were hit with the pandemic, but the president is a great salesman. He sold the economy and got Business Sentiment up, Consumer Sentiment up and we saw quite a bit of Consumer Spending over the last few years. If he oversells the economy now, when people actually know what their real economic picture is, whether they have their job or have a job and are at risk of getting laid off, can he spin this one the way he has in the past . He can tell my mother in new jersey that theres a caravan of criminals coming from mexico and she could believe him because she cant see it. Every person can see and feel how much money they have in their wallet. Yeah, i think thats a real danger. When i worked in the obama administration, the Unemployment Rate started to come down. And some people wanted to brag about it. But our political adviser said if you go out there and say, isnt it so much better with an 8 Unemployment Rate, look, it used to be 10 , the people would look at us and say youre completely out of touch. You dont understand how hard and how painful it is right now. So i think theres a real risk of, you know, being out of touch, and i think President Trump has generally seemed, you know, out of touch as a general rule. But the good news is, the economy is headed in the right direction based on these numbers. It seems like midapril was the economic lows, at least so far. Jason, thank you for joining me. Still ahead after nearly three months on lockdown, americas largest city starts to reopen today. The plan in new york city as people continue to gather for large protests. Plus thousands in michigan are still out of work even as businesses have reopened. Were going to ask Governor Gretchen Whitmer what needs to happen next. Youre clearly someone who takes care of yourself. So when it comes to screening for colon cancer, dont wait. Because when caught early, its more treatable. Im cologuard. Superior protection helps prevent early skin aging and skin cancer with a clean feel. Its the one. The best for your skin. Ultra sheer. Neutrogena®. Amid calls for justice and protests across the country, we are still battling a pandemic. These mass demonstrations are sparking new concerns for Health Care Experts who have seen how quickly cases can spike. As of this morning, there are more than 1. 9 million confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States, and the death toll has risen to more than 111,000. Cases are on the rise in over 20 states, like florida, which has seen more than 5,000 new cases in the last four days. Still over the weekend, Governor Desantis moved forward with the next phase of reopening there. And three months after its first confirmed case, new york city will enter phase one of its reopening today. Up to 400,000 residents could return to work as construction, manufacturing and some retail resumes. Nbcs rehema ellis is in times square with the latest. What exactly is going to open today . Well what they have opening is 32,000 construction jobs, manufacturing and retail, but take a look. Some of that retail here in times square is going to try to open up as theyre still boarded up. If you look down the street, you dont see many cars which, again is not normal for new york city. But those are things that are trying to get open. And many of those people you talked about who will come back to the city are expected to ride the subway. How will they keep people safe . Masks are required. And if you dont have one, theyll provide one for you. Theyre also putting markers on the subway platform to encourage people to engage in social distancing and they are cleaning, cleaning, cleaning. Even in the city that never sleeps, the subway cars will be sleeping between 1 00 and 5 00 a. M. Every day for deep cleaning to protect people and workers. All right. Rehema, we wish everyone in new york the best of luck on this big day. I want to turn to michigan. Its another state where theyll be taking major steps to reopen today. It comes as the number of cases in the state exceeds 64,000 and the death toll near 6,000. Democratic governor of michigan, gretchen whitmer, joins us now. Youre taking major steps to reopen this week. What are your biggest concerns . Clearly, coronavirus is still very present across the country. And thats why, as we start to reengage and were doing an incremental engagement, always informed by some of the best Public Health experts in our country, were going to do this incrementally, but our hope is that people know that we still have to live with the coronavirus. We need to wear our masks. We cannot just drop our guard. We did learn lessons from 1918 what happened in our country and what has happened in other countries around the world who have dealt with coronavirus before we did. If we drop all of the social distancing and all of the important hygiene measures weve learned about in these last three months, we could set ourselves up for another spike. And thats something that i think, while theres a lot of debate about a lot of things in this country, we should be unanimous that no one wants to go through another spike of covid19 and back to a stayhome order. Thats what were hoping to avoid. Then how do you respond to the kricriticism you received t you yourself didnt practice social distancing while you participated in a peaceful protest and did wear a mask . So i wore a mask the whole time. I did not greet people the way i usually do with hugs or handshakes or highfives. I recognize thats how covid northeastern spre19 spreads. But our right to demonstrate is something that in this moment i thought it was important to show up, to show solidarity with so many who are protesting Police Brutality in our country. We need to take steps and show unity. And where that is lacking on the National Front, its incumbent upon governors to take this seriously and to set the example. As people protest, ive asked them to keep wearing the mask. Try to socially distance, but its not always going to be, you know, something that you can do, especially in a march like this. But refrain from the handshake, the highfives and hugs that we know bring us in close proximity. When youre speaking, keep that mask on. It is the throwing of your voice, the projection that creates the place where covid19 is spreading. And thats why its so important that as the leaders take on these opportunities to show the leadership thats so lacking across the country and from the National Front that we demonstrate the kind of activity that were asking everyone else to continue portraying. How hard is it for you to balance this very Important Message to respect and encourage people to protest in the name of justice while at the same time, you lead a state where you had many people furious that they had to stay home, that they couldnt run their businesses gore to schoor go to school or go to work . How do you manage the two. Its difficult, but we are smart people. We understand. The mast majority of people in the state of michigan, millions undertook what we knew to be the best practices. They made the sacrifice. We cant let this sacrifice have been made in vain. Thats why its so important we continue to keep our guard up and do these things. We are reengaging the economy. But we also cant forget that just ten weeks ago, we were number three in the country in terms of number of positive covid19 cases. We were number three in this country with regard to the highest number of deaths. We know this had a disproportionate impact on communities of color. We cant forget how dire the circumstances were just a few months ago and what the threat could be if we drop all of these protections that weve learned about and that were trying to emulate. Lets talk about the Economic Impact on michigan residents that covid has had. Weve seen 1. 5 Million People in your state lose their jobs since midmarch. Weve got a strong jobs number on friday. The president said it was a great day for the u. S. Economy. The greatest comeback. Whats happening in your state . How do people feel . Well, you already debunked the rhetoric coming out of the white house this morning, but what i will say is this. This has been hard. Theres no question that we are dealing with this 100year Global Pandemic that required that we shut parts of our economy down. So that we could stave the incredible exponential growth we were seeing. It was taking lives. Over 5,600 people in michigan have died and yet we know that number would have been much, much higher if we didnt take the aggressive action. As we are reengaging, more people are starting to go back to work. Feeling more optimistic. And i think that thats a good thing, but we also are recognizing that there are so many unique crises that we are confronting all at once right now and thats why its so important as we get people back to work, we do it in a way they can be safe as employees, that the customers, the general public can be safe coming in and so getting it right. Getting the protocols right, the cadence in terms of doing this incrementally instead of flipping a switch and thinking life is back to normal. Its really important we continue to Pay Attention to the science. Listen to our epidemiologists. Weve got some of the finest leaders in the country here in the state of michigan, and thats who is informing all of the work were doing. Thats why weve seen michigan take a dramatic change from where we were in terms of exponential growth to flattening that curve. Weve got to keep it up and keep paying attention to the science and to the facts. Well, lets talk about who covid hit in michigan. More than 40 of covid deaths in your state have been africanamericans. Despite africanamericans only making up 14 of your population. The virus has clearly put a magnifying glass on a problem that already existed across the country. Do you have a plan to address this . Yes, so i think michigan was one of the first states to release data around the racial makeup of people that were testing for covid19. Michigan, louisiana and illinois. It is we were one of the first states to do that. We thought it was important because we were seeing this discrepancy and it helped us in terms of communicating with communities of color to help eninsue ensue ensure that communities most at risk. Our states first africanamerican Lieutenant Governor is taking this on and pulling in experts from across the state so that weve got strategies coming out of this moment to improve equity in terms of outcomes for peoples health. This is something that weve been focused on as an administration, but dealing with covid19, this is a mirror thats been held up to the United States, and we have a lot of work to do. People tend to look at all of the demonstrations that are happening across this country and look at covid19 as though they are totally unrelated events, and they are not. Theres a very real lesson here, and that is, we need ecquitable opportunity and protection for everyone in this country. Whether its covid19 or Police Brutality, these are lessons were learning now that we have to come out of this with a plan to address the inequities that are feeding into it. Are those protests demanding new leadership in the oval office, the latest poll out of your state shows former vp biden leading President Trump by 12 points. We know how important michigan is in novembers election. So i have said to everyone for years, the road to the white house goes through the state of michigan. We are a state that we are hardworking, good people. And we expect our government to be as hard working and as good as we are. We care about elections, and yet we dont feed into all of the hyperbole and rhetoric. We want to know who is going to solve problems . Who is going to get to work . Who is going to meet our needs. We know this incredible unemployment number. People have lost a lot in terms of their savings. We know there are businesses that may not make it through this. And you look at all the things that contributed to our nations uniquely hard experience with covid19. And then theres no question that who is at the top matters. And impacts our lives every single day. So im not particularly surprised to see those numbers, but i would warn everyone, dont buy into what those polls are. Stay on the ground. Stay close to the people and make sure you spend a lot of time here in michigan. Governor, thank you so much for joining me today. Good luck to your state today. A big reopening day. Were going to leave it there. Next, were seeing more republicans and former military leaders. Were talking fourstar generals becoming more vocal about their differences with President Trump. But what does this really mean for our country and the upcoming election . Why are they speaking out . And why now . Llation. Like way more vanities perfect for you. Nice. Way more unique fixtures and tiles. Pairing. Nice. Way more top brands in sinks and faucets. Way more ways to rule your renovation. Nice on any budget, with free shipping. Wayfair. Way more than furniture. This moment right now. This is our commencement. No, well not get a diploma or a degree of any kind. But we are entering a new chapter in our lives. Our confidence is shaken; our hearts cracked. The kind of a crack that comes from the loss of a job; from life plans falling apart. We didnt ask for it. But we are rising to meet it. And how far weve come isnt even close to how far we can go. We just have to remember how patient we were. How strong we can be. how strong you can be. and remember this; theres a crack in everything for a reason. How else can the light get in . Tomorrow starts today. It was a busy political weekend with more former military leaders criticizing President Trumps response to the protests. Republican senator Lisa Murkowski said she may not vote for the president while mitt romney marched in washington. If you follow President Trumps twitter feed, he had all kinds of shiny objects out to distract from old standbyes like the russia investigation and Sleepy Joe Biden to now going after Roger Goodell and the nfl for saying they would do a better job of supporting protests. All of that was to distract from this. Thousands and thousands of americans taking to the streets to peacefully protest for Police Reform. Joining me now, former republican strategist, steve schmidt. President trump spent a lot of time going after former secretary of state colin powell. I want to share a bit of what powell had to say. The one word i have to use with respect to what hes been doing for the last several years is a word i never would have used before. I never would have used with any of the forpresideur president s for, he lies. He lies about things and gets away with it because people will not hold him accountable. He called the president a danger to the nation. Colin powell called the president a danger to the nation. In any normal time, Something Like this would be hugely damaging to a sitting president. Is it . I think the accumulation of all of it is damaging, stephanie. What we saw here over the last couple of days is these retired fourstar officers speaking out and engaging in politics which they are loathed to do. But theyre not saying we dont like Donald Trumps tax plan or we dont like Donald Trumps approach to health care. What these men who have spent their entire careers, their entire lifetimes in service to the nation as sentinels of the nations liberty and freedom, what theyve said is donald trump is a unique threat to americanism. To the american experiment which began in philadelphia in 1776. That hes a threat to the american constitution. That hes a threat to the unity, to the union of the country and theyre speaking out specifically to protect the institution of the United States military which this president threatened to use, to turn loose against the American People, that that military, that apolitical institution that protects the country, a country of the people, by the people, for the people, the president s threatening to turn the most lethal combat force in the world against the American People triggered at long last all of these officials to come forward and to say what is so evidently true is that donald trump is a profound threat to the country. Lisa murkowski, i mentioned it earlier, struggles with her support from the president. Mitt romney has criticized the president before. He marched alongside black lives matter protesters. But in large part, most republicans have been pretty silent about how the president handled the protests. Who is this going to cost . Those republicans standing with the president or romney and murkowski . Romney and murkowski are going to come out looking fine when historys lens judges this rancid era. When you look at the senate races right now, cory gardner in colorado, that race is effectively over. The democrat will win. When you look at Martha Mcsalley in arizona, that race is effectively over. The democrat will win. When you look at the senate races all over the country, you see republican candidates in very, very big trouble and Mitch Mcconnells grasp on the Senate Majority becoming tenuous. Republicans long ago made a decision to cast aside any previous principles, any previous sense of decency, any sense of commitment to the rule of law. And they signed up to become foot soldiers in a cultive personality for donald trump. Theyre going down with the ss trump if thats what happens in november. And as we look out on that ship on the high seas, the ss trump proverbial is foundering. Its had a difficult month with these protests, with the total ineptitude and response to coronavirus and the American People are looking at this man, this man who has not met historys task in a way that is greater than any previous american leader in all of our long history. He has failed at a level that almost defies description in the year 2020. And thats why his poll numbers are cratering against the Vice President. And is the former Vice President s tactic, the right one . He seems to be taking a more measured, some say passive approach, sort of letting the president spin, but while the president spins, he controls the narrative. Well, i thought that what the Vice President did last week was very strong. He talked to the country. He talked to the country about Racial Justice, about these protests. I think he he was able to communicate the pain that so many people feel in the country, also a sense of optimism that will get through this stronger. In the sense that there is a narrative, and i would agree that there is, i think that the narrative is one of Donald Trumps profound incompetence. I think that here, as we move into the summer months of 2020, a year of tragedy, we have seen the United States become the epicenter of Coronavirus Infection and death. We have seen the United States have the most inept response of any industrialized country in the world. We see 100,000 of us dead and more to come. We see our streets filled, we see donald trump inciting police violence, we see donald trump inciting the worst in most base elements in American Life over and over again. We just see a failure. What possible argument could there be made that donald trump has been effective or competent or done a good job on any of this. You have to be literally from another planet, looking through a telescope upside down to come to that conclusion. There is just no argument that can conceivably be made in the real life. This is just a failure of unprecedented dimensions for a leader in this country. And the American People, i think, have come to understand that in a time of relative peace and prosperity, also known as the obama era, by the narrowest of margin, a Reality Tv Show host, a new york state real estate con man huckster became the president and tragedy ensued. I think thats the narrative locking in. Well, steve, it is going to be a challenge if this only resonates with people who live on another planet. Last i checked theyre not eligible to vote. Steve, thank you so much. Were going to leave it there. When we come back, the message goes beyond our borders, protesters around the world are calling for an end to Police Brutality. The anger that started in minneapolis, minnesota, spreading across europe, thousands of protesters from brussels to berlin shouted for Racial Justice and equality over the weekend. The crowd in bristol, england, ripping down the statue of a prominent slave trader and throwing it into a river. Keir simmons joins us live from london. It doesnt appear there are any signs of the protests winding down. Reporter no, it really doesnt, steph. And were seeing protests all around the world, as one person said today, almost anywhere that the sun is shining, there are protests around the globe. Here in europe, here in london, in spain, in france, in germany, in poland, and right around the world in australia, and new zealand, and people looking and taking from the protests in america lessons for their own communities, but also looking at history, so, for example, australia and new zealand, talking about the Aboriginal People there and that statue pulled down of a slave trader from the 17th century, quite extraordinary there in bristol in the uk. Protests spreading across the world. Thank you for the global view. That wraps up this busy hour.
