Heres whats happening. America now on the verge of one of its most difficult darkest periods, a stretch of weeks that could see more americans die from the coronavirus than in the vietnam and korean wars c combined. The administration predicting between 100,000 and 240,000 deaths in this country by midjune. Even if you take the middle number, thats like losing the entire population of a efforts currently in place. Heres President Trump and his team on tuesday. I want every american to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead. Were going to go through a very tough two week. Were seeing whats happening in new york. That is really, really tough. If you extrapolate that to the nation, well have to be prepared for that. Theres no magic bullet. Theres no magic vaccine other therapy. Its just behaviors. Each of our behaviors tran translating into something that changes the court of this viral pandemic over the next 30 days. As we speak, the numbers are growing, and they are growing fast. This morning there are more than 188,000 cases of coronavirus in the united states, roughly 3900 people have died. Remember, 24 hours ago we said monday had been the deadliest day yet with about 500 fatalities. Yesterday was even worse, with nearly 900. At least seven states saw increases of 1,000 cases or more in just the last 24 thundershowers. That includes states like louisiana, which saw an increase of 1200 cases and more than 50 deaths. In michigan, where the death toll jumped 40 in one single day. In addition to the human toll, theres the economic toll, which is hitting folks particularly. Its the first of the dayings the day rent, mortgages, utility bills and credit card bills are due. With millions of americans suddenly out of work, a lot of them just cant pay. We have every angle covered with our reporters. I want to go first to my colleague raheem ellis in new york city where the death toll has topped 1,000. It doesnt feel like were in front of the virus. It feels like in new york theyre playing defense. Reporter it does sort of feel that way. The fact were standing here, a place i never thought we would be standing here doing a story like this. The mayor of the city said theyre increasing hospital bed facilities at a breakneck speed. Behind me you see the dome of the arthur ashe stadium, the larger facilities on the bill legitimate jean king center. Over here is the indoor tennis facility. This is where theyre going to put 350 hospital beds. They hope to start taking in patience as of next week. This will be for covid, but nonicu covid patients. Here to the left, this is the Louis Armstrong stadium, the second largest stadium here at the Billie Jean King center. This is where they will start a Food Distribution center, to provide food for patients, workers s. Families f. Form were having a hard time to get out, and a lot of them dont have the money to purchase the food they need. So theyre increasing the bed face and more space as quickly as possible. Stunning. I never, ever thought i would see anything like that. Thank you. Im going to turn to guam, where at least 100 sailors on board the uss Theodore Roosevelt have tested positive for the coronavirus, prompting the commander to plead with the u. S. Navy to get the sailors off it time to evacuate that ship yet . Were provides supplies and additional medical personnel as they need it. Im pleased to report that none of them are seriously ill. Not at that point. What does that point look like in courtney cubie covers the pentagon for nbc news. Courtney, how many people are on the carrier now . There are more than 4,000 werent know from the acting navy secretary, that at least 1,000 have been taken off the ship to provide. They took the sailors out, but there were additional sailors on the ship. These ships are extremely tight quarter, which is mainly metal, which we notice coronavirus survives on metal. Its nearly impossible to not only do the extensive Contact Tracing that would be required to find every single sailor who may have come in contact with they affected sailors, but also to scrub the entire ship clean. Of course the number of positives quickly escalated. We know now there are more than 100 sailors who have tested positive. They are testing every single sailor on the ship, but we also know now from the memo that that navy captain sent to his leaders last weekend, we know the testing has not been effective, because sailors are testing negative, only to come forward several days later with symptoms and then to test positive. So their efforts need to be now to quarantine those sailors, steph. Thank you, courtney. Now to the drama of two cruise ships stuck in the florida straits after the coronavirus killed at least four people on board. The problem . Nobody will let them dock, including the governor of florida, who says he cannot spare the resources. Kerry sanders is following this from ft. Lauderdale. Kerry, i have a bunch of questions, but lets start with what in the world is going on . Reporter you have on board four people who have died, nine people who have tested positive, and then 200 more who have been tested and the cruise line says they presume have coronavirus. Theyre treating it as such. So were they to come in here, as they hope to do on thursday with 2500 members of the crew and passengers t. The governor says, whoa, some of those people could wind up into the hospitals here, it could take up space that those who live here may need very soon. On those two ships, there are about 300 passengers who are americans, u. S. Citizens. There are many others who are from australia, from new zealand, from great britain, so the governor is saying why are we going to open or hospitals to them when we should be word about our people here . Is the governor answering the question just a few moments ago the Surgeon General spoke to Savannah Guthrie on the today show, making it clear that people need to stay home. Is he going to be answersi answering for this . Reporter ultimately they answer at the polls. The question is whether this is a philosophical choice he is making, where hes allowing local politicians to decide rather than making a statewide order. As you so rightly point out, there are beaches that are open. Daytona beach and while here in ft. Lauder day those beaches have been closed, but those closures happen by local governments. While the governor says he does not want to see the ships come in here, it looks like at this point the decision will be made locally by the broward commission. So on board you have those who say those politicians are making decisions about their lives. We spoke to wendy and mark depin o. I want the politicians to know that any one of us, crew and guests, were human beings, our lives are in their hand. I do not want them to wake up the next day and secondguess, oh, i should have let them back into the states. At the end of the day, somebody needs to stand up for american values. Do the right thing, bring people home. Reporter thats a challenge from those on board to the politicians making the decision. If theres going to be a decision, it looks like its going to be made thursday morning, tomorrow, and the ships are expected to be off the coast by thursday afternoon. This is all going down to the wire. Kerry, thank you so much. So glad we got to cover that important story. Now overseas to italy, where more than 12,000 people have died, but the worst may be over. Thats the positive. Matt bradley is in rome. Matt, i havent been able to say theres a positive in italy for what feels like weeks. Reporter its been bad news here the whole time and more news last night. More than 800 dead. More than 1400 new positive case. Some of the scientists here are sort of celebrating there, if you will. The head of the National Institute of health here said this was a good sign. Even though the rates are sky high, and much higher than in a lot of countries badly afflicted by this virus, it just goes to show that these numbers were the same more or less as the numbers the day before that and the day before that. He says this is a sign the numbers are plateauing, which means were sort of flattening the curve, and maybe this is the beginning of the end. But policy maker policymakers a chance. Theyre going to be very until the day after easter, april 13th, but still here, nobody is taking any chances, but it could take weeks and weeks for a nationwide lockdown to finally figure into the regular numbers and statistics and show that its actually working. Stephanie . Matt, thank you so much. Now i want to turn to the economy and markets, which is down big time before the opening bell. Rent and bills across the board due today. It is april 1st. So lets go to dom chu. The dow just finished the worst quarter in its history. Were about to get whacked with bad jobs numbers. They could get even worse in the coming months, just because of the timing of when some of these numbers are taken in. You mentioned we could see real pain with regard to the Real Estate Market, this is a tragically simple story. Because of timing of the nature of travel restrictions and shelter in place orders last month, much of the Real Estate Market had been sheltered from what had been happening, meaning rent had alreadying paid, leases had will be been paid, mortgages had already been paid, this time with the number of family whose unemployed, some of those people may not be able to make those payments. That leads to landlords not making their mortgage payments on the houses they own or buildings they own. You can see the trickle or Ripple Effect coming into play. Thats why it has a lot of people who are concerned with whats going to happen. However, there are positives here. Some state and local governments are already contemplating or have initiated rent deferral plans, evehiciction freezes, an some government mortgages are put on 90day forbearance, and that of course is just a delay. Youll have to pay it back eventually, but these are some of the steps being taken to mitigate some of the disastrous effects. Steph, back over to you. On. Thank you,dom chu. A quick note. Join me for a special facebook live, your money, unemployment and relief benefits. Ill be answering your questions at nbc news, at 7 00 p. M. Eastern. Coming up we have a lot more to cover. Businesses are in the crossharris, many looking for Government Support, while at the same time being focused on their brands, trying to do good deeds to help people across this country, and other businesses, trying to keep their businesses alid. Health care workers on the front line are call it a war zone. One doctor talks about his prediction for the next few weeks, as more and more are raising the alarms. Were bursting at the seams. It just seems that the system is about to collapse. A lot of our providers in their shifts in tears. Its more than we signed up for. I have a family to come home to. The way things are looking, this isnt got to get better. Americans are not prepared, and nurses are not being protected. The message that we are sending to each other, we are here for each other, we are here for our patients. Its scary every dade. Every day we just try to love bigger and care bigger, and keep pushing forward. Because thats what we do. You should be mad at tech thats unnecessarily complicated. Make ice. Making ice. But youre not because you have e trade which isnt complicated. Their tools make trading quicker and simpler so you can take on the markets with confidence. Dont get mad get e trade. About being a scientist at 3m. I wanted them to know that innovation is not just about that one aha moment. Science is a process. It takes time, dedication. Its a journey. Were constantly asking ourselves, how can we do things better and better . what we make has to work. We strive to protect you. At 3m, were in pursuit of solutions that make peoples lives better. As lead doctors on the Coronavirus Task force now estimating that coronavirus will kill 100,000 to 240,000 americans, there were 21 new coronavirus cases from march 1st to 2nd, from the 30th tos 31st more than 20,000, in new york city alone, officials are working quickly open hospitals. Despite that effort, we are still seeing scenes like this, rain ponchos, being handed out as protective equipment. When we talk about heroes, you are looking at one, dr. Darn stermen. This man sees it all. The numbers are alarming. They news predictions from the white house, do they add up to what youre seeing . They do. Were seeing more and more patients coming in each day. Were seeing our normal hospital units filled up with covid patients, and every day adding more units, adding more patient. Take us insides. The governors the new york has described it as a war zone. Is it . Well, i think were dealing with the pressures we would soo in a war zone. Its remarkable the way that all the hospital staff have stepped up to care for these patients in a way that no one could have anticipated or realized months ago. The teamwork is phenomenal. The courage of all the people working is just admirable, and we continue to step up each day to accomplish this. There have been many, many photos, i mentioned it before, doctors and nurses begging for more protective equipment. The latest we have seen multiple new york city doctors, i mentioned the yankee ponchos. Can you tell me was going on with the protection and support you need to do your jobs . So we are very lucky at nyu langone. We have enough protective equipment for our doctors and our nurses. It is something thats of a constant concern for us, but weve had enough for care for our patients in a safe manner, but we do have concern for our colleagues across the city and the country to make sure what need to take care of patients safely. What do you think about that . Those next hot spots are most likely in the south and the midwest, places that have had minimal tests. What is your advice to doctors and hospitals in those areas . My advice is that testing is incredibly important. One of the things that we are concerned about is we are seeing unusual presentations of covid19, so that the classic presentations of fever, cough and shortness of breath dont encompass all the patients were seeing. Many unusual presentation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, nasal congestion, and so we have to have a more expansive view of what a patient may look like when they first present, which means we have to protect ourselves in all of these situations, and then to have some idea in the community, we worry about people whoa might be carrying or shedding the virus who are asymptomatically passing it on to other individuals. Doctor, we have people in this country right now who are absolutely panicked, and others who still dont think its a very big deal. What do you most want america to understand. Number one, this is a very big deal. This is the most significant medical event that most of us will see in our lifetimes. Thats number one. Two, the doctors, nurses, therapists staff in the hospital are doing everything we can to care for the patients, and providing the best possible medical care, the latest advances in science and clinical trials, but the biggest impact we can have as a society is out in the community. Its not in the hospitals. Its going to be the social distancing. Its going to be the washing of the hands, the very simple things that will stop this virus. Not so much what we do in the front lines of the hospitals. Do you agree with the Surgeon General who told our colleague Savannah Guthrie earlier, that the america just needs to go home . I agree. Very much so. Well, then i certainly hope people are watching and people are listening. Doctor, thank you for all youre doing. I sincerely appreciate it. My pleasure. Thank you for educating all our audience. Ahead, businesses are navigating in a whole new world. How will this new reality they are facing change the future for them . Some companies that have huge demand right now are hiring new workers that have been laid off from their other jobs, like cvs and inns that cart. But new hires are bringing new challenges. How can they protect these employees . And what benefits do they need to be offering them . Other companies trying to stay afloat are trying to do what they can to help. Tesla offers ventilators. Brooks brothers converted factory is to produce 150,000 masks a day, and facebook spending 1 hundred million buck to support news outlets through the world. What will small and big business look like on the other side of this . No one nose. Joining mess is former Senior Vice President of business at uber,nd and podcaster extraordinary nate. Emil, Companies Like amazon and instacart, but were seeing employees saying they dont feel safe. Youve been on the inside. What do these Companies Need to do . These Companies Need to do all they can to try to make them feel safe. Its stuff to be a private employer and get the equipment that a lot of these folks need when hospitals are having a hard time getting the equipment that their employees need. So they have to do their best while still be supportive of the health care system. They can do things like paid time off this at the feel theyre vulnerable, if they have been exposed and do the things ive heard these companies have started to be doing. Its a tough line to warrick, and every day they have to adjust to the circumstances on the ground. Scott, how should this worked . If you think about all the people delivers products, insta cart shoppers, theyre putting themselves at risk so we dont have to, we can stay home. Theres no getting around it, a lot of these people are going to work because they have to. Unfortunately they dont have the economic assessments or buffer here. To emils comment, the only thing can you do as a company, is to ensure they dont field economic pressure to come n i do think a lot of workers especially amazon is the number one recruiter out of my class at stern. I gnome people are working around the clock and proud to be working around the clock, because they see their service as essential. While theres a lot of press about feeling pressure, but i think the vast amount of workers, and the ones who are steps up an filling the void the federal government has created, and think theyre working hand in hand to make sure theyre safe. I didnt mean to dodge the question, stephanie, but if people dont feel economically secure enough to not come in to work, thats where the problem is. Emil, they back to 2008 and the financial crisis. This is a very different financial crisis, but the bailouts and the economic support that we saw big business, specifically banks, go ahead let to the rise of occupy wall street. A portion of this country that felt like the little guy loses out and the by guy wins. We know theres a huge amount being doled out to support business, as well as individuals. How careful does the government and business have to be right now to not worsen that divide . I think its an opportunity to potential it is a patriotic moment like it was post9 11 that this it was a moment post 20082009, when it was whos at fault . Who will benefit and who will suffer . Were all in this together, and we saw this at the top of the Brooks Brothers making masks, these Companies Making shields, ventilators, companies committing not to lay people off. All the these commitments for companies who didnt have to do it, but theyre doing it because of the shared sense of sacrifice. I think that will reflect well on these brands, on businesses, and frankly on americans in an others polarized teem. So it feels more like a post9 11 moment than a post2009 moment. Scott, do we believe that to be entirely true . Every day we hear more and more about ceos saying they wont be paid for the rest of the year or theyll dock their pay, but most ceos are only a portion of what they they get. Huge stock opportunities, huge bonuses waiting at the end of Something Like this, and their actual employees are getting fulloed. Do we believed theres so much Good Business happening and nothing bad . Well, this is your questions are correct questions, stephanie. This is going to be a test of the system, that is, simply put, do we privatize the gains when things are good and socialize the losses when companies who have used 96 of the Free Cash Flow to buy back stock, thereby inflating stock, inflating the compensation of Senior Executives who get the majority of their compensation through equity . The reality is about 80 of the stock market in terms of value is owned by the top 10 . You hear a lot of discussion around socialism when candidates are talking about raising tax rates, and then you hear ceos saying were in this together. The reality is if were tryly believing on capitalism on the way up to be blunt. If carnival cruises go out business, its not like the boats sink to the bottom of the ocean. It means the equity gets wiped out. I think theres a lot of moral hazards. One of the wounds out of 2008, people felt with respect to corporate american, heads you win, tails i lose. This is a test to whether or not we believe in bad times as well as good times. Theres some form of capitalism here and the equity holders who have done exceptionally well, even the dow is up triple since the lowing of 2008, do they take the same pain as us . This is a test whether capitalism is just a call sign when ceos are looking for bailouts. Or maybe its time for capitalism to get better. Emil, come back soon. Email and scold, thank you so much. When we come back, underfunded world hospitals were suffering before, theyre suffering even more now. But first, a picture of america right now. Many were already understaffed and undersupplied, a new report points on the this because rural areas have been so far largely spared the infection rates, Health Care Providers in smaller communities have had more time to prepare, but with a limited financial resources, the impact may still be devastating. Joining us is richard gillespie, it is president of Jefferson County hospital in dunklin, oklahoma. Help us understand what its like. Time may be on your side, but resources arent. Were in a blessed position, Jefferson County hospital is about 30 miles south of dunking. Were an 18bed licensed critical access hospital, but we also have access to the resources of duncan regional hospital. We have been very fortunate with that, to have that affiliation. We have financial capital, Human Resources and access to supplies. Its not that we dont have limited supplies, but we also have that relationship. That puts us in a much better position than some of my other colleagues in critical access hospitals. How are you preparing . Oklahoma has been flagged as one of the next potentially hot spots . For the last two to three weeks we have stood up our Incident Command Center with both organizations. We meet on a daily basis, do inventories of the personal protective equipment. We stay up to date on the current cdc guidelines and what the state Health Department is recommending for us. A lot of time and effort has been put in by the whole team. I couldnt be more proud of our team in being prepared. Youre correct, we have not seen or surge yet, but we think it will happen in the next two weeks, so we are spending all the time we have available in preparing for this. What are your Biggest Challenges right now . Biggest challenge is to maintaining the staff morale. You know, this is very personal for us in a small rural area. You really have hometown people taking care of hometown folks. The nurses are apprehensive. This is nothing they have ever seen before. Ive been in health care 40 years, im a respiratory therapist, my clinical background before i got into administration. And trying to reassure the staff and the team were in this together, we have the resources, and were going to do everything we can to make sure they have what they need to provide the care that they will be expected to provide. Well, we are sending all of our good wishes to doctors and nurses and staff. This is a difficult time. Thanks for all that you are doing. Thank you for the opportunity. Still ahead, thousands of retailers are closed right now, but heres whats very interesting. Some are unsure they will ever reopen. Many have said were going to snap back. Many of americas best known retailers might not even qualify for loans under the congressional bailout because it is only available to corporations whose debt is considered safe by Credit Rating firms. Reminder, retail was already facing major challenges before coronavirus with several brick and mortar major stores closing. Nobody knows retail better than my next best. Matt shay. Thank you so much for joining me. Your team calculates 430 billion in industry revenues that could evaporate. Help us understand that. Stephanie, i think the way were looking at this is many of these businesses, although, as you point out, some of them were facing challenges unique to their own systems. These businesses were solvent going into this crisis. They employed more than 50 Million People and created Job Opportunities for millions of americans. What we want to do with this bridge between now and when we can restore our economy to normal operation, is keep the businesses viable so theyre solvent when they come out and they can put those people back to work. And the key is to make sure that these programs have been put in place are going to be available for the companies that need them most. Lets talk about companies that need them most, but companies who have the ability to survive on the other side. When you have macys or j. C. Penney that employee thousands of thousands of people but theyve been suffering for years, should they be getting massive Government Support when we dont know if they can survive . Well, i wouldnt comment on specific companies. I would simply say youve got companies that literally employ millions of people. Theyre solvent businesses going into this. These are not selfinflicted wounds. These are government mandates and theyre the right thing to do. But thats why we need the government to step in and provide a bridge and some opportunity for these companies to be viable when we come out of this which we will so they can put those people back to work. Remember, that as these companies are making these decisions, the number one thing in their minds is how do they take care of their employees. And theyve been trying to do this mostly through furloughs so far, and keeping them attached, so the workforce, they can still be qualified and eligible for benefits. So the goal, i think, that we all share but you saw this coming out of the relief package that the Congress Passed last week was lets focus on american families, consumers, the workforce so when were through this, were able to put america back to work. When we get through this, do you believe were going to snap back or do you think people are going to change their habits . When you think about what the Amazon Effect has been for the last few years, people becoming more and more dependent on online shopping, thats clearly happening now. Is that going to continue or will we return . Stephanie, i think a couple of questions there. The question about will we snap back is a medical question and an economic one. And in terms of the things that we do now, i think prepare us for the kind of recovery well have later. If we take the dramatic actions that youre seeing states and the federal government take to protect our population, i think theres a better chance that we come out of this more quickly. Thats obviously all of the language that youve heard the medical experts talk about, flattening the curve, suggests while we have to endure the pain and disruption now, that means well be better positioned to recovery quickly later. The separate question, when we do come out of this, whether thats a v or a u, do customers behave the same way. As weve seen with every economic disruption in the past, the patterns and the trends that existed before we went into this disruption will be accelerated as a result and so whether thats online sorts of behavior, digital engagement, fulfillment, all of those things that are effective now are going to be things that i think will have a legacy and there will be a long tail on that as we come out of the recession. What will that look like . Many of us are becoming near or 100 online shoppers. How is that going to affect us on the other side . Do you think people are going to go back out and shop . Well, i think were all social creatures and so im not sure how much people are enjoying the isolation right now. Theres certainly a human tragedy that goes along with what were experiencing and many families are experiencing it in truly tragic ways. The sheer inability to interact with our fellow human beings, with our work colleagues, with the people in our neighborhoods, schools, communities, churches, we all miss that. I cant imagine that the world is going to simply say, well, ill do all of those things remotely when the recession passes. What got into this was a medicaldriven sort of a challenge. This is about a virus. When the virus is beaten and it will be beaten, people are going to want to come back. And i think the confidence weve seen being shaken is being shaken by a medical issue. When the medical issue is resolved, youll see the confidence restored. I know i want to come back and there are millions and millions of jobs and Great American businesses at stake. We got to think about that. Matt, thank you so much for joining me today. Thanks. Thank you for watching. That wraps up a very busy hour. Im stephanie ruhle.
