People are simply taxed too much. Speaking of millions, tiger woods and nike win big, huge with tigers historic comeback. Woods donning the famous masters green jacket for the fifth time in his extraordinary career. And do not forget. This week we expect at any minute attorney general bill barr will release the Mueller Report to congress. And we will let you know as soon as we know. You must stay here for that. But first, heres something you are not looking forward to but you cannot avoid. It is tax day. So today we are talking about the almighty u. S. Dollar and how it is shaping next years president ial election. We start with President Trump. Hes headed to minnesota today for a roundtable focused on tax cuts and at the same time, his Reelection Campaign is set to announce it raised a whole lot of dough. More than 30 million bucks in the First Quarter. Thats roughly the same as the top two democrats combined. Senators Bernie Sanders and kamala harris. Both of those candidates are in the news for their tax returns as well. Sanders is finally expected to release his returns actually ten years of them today. Amid some controversy about his millionaire status. Harris released her returns yesterday. Surprised, she is a millionaire as well, two times over. And amid all of this, all of this, we saw multiple candidates officially kick off their president ial runs, including cory booker, Eric Swalwell and a man they call mayor pete, pete buttigieg. I should note somebody elses taxes we havent seen yet, we certainly want to, President Trump. But lets take you now to nbcs josh letterman. He was in south bend for that very big announcement. It was quite a speech as we heard mayor pete wrote it himself. Josh joins us now from chicago. Man, mayor pete has some serious momentum. Six weeks, people never heard of this guy. Four weeks ago, few could pronounce his name. And there he was yesterday, front and center. Now third in the polls with a speech that many have said are historic. How is he going to keep this momentum going . Hes riding this tsunami wave of interest and enthusiasm for his campaign that brought him from obscurity in a matter of weeks or barely months to third place in the polls in iowa and new hampshire, according to recent polls. Now as an official, formal ca a candidate, hes going to have to put together offices and folks on the ground in south carolina, iowa, new hampshire, all of the early states thats going to be able to really carry him into the primary and get voters to the polls when it comes to it. Hes been doing some of that. Hes going to have to do a lot more. Hes also going to have to get more specific on some of the policy issues. So far hes been focusing in Broad Strokes on values, general themes and also trying to draw an implicit contrast to donald trump who doesnt like to talk about by name very much on the campaign trail, but he does like to talk about the idea of rejecting the idea of make America Great again. Lets listen to some of that. Theres a myth being sold to industrial and rural communities. The myth that we can stop the clock and turn it back. It comes from people who think the only way to speak to communities like ours is through resentment and nostalgia. It is time to walk away from the politics of the past and towards something totally different. And stephanie, as he works to build out a national campaign, hes going to have at least some resources to do it. His campaign telling us just this morning that in the four hours after his announcement event in south bend yesterday, he raised a million bucks. Thats in addition to the 7 million raised in the First Quarter of the year. So hes got a lot of money behind him. That number is growing, and hes going to be working to build that out even more in the coming days. Money and momentum, two good things to have if you are running for president. I want to bring my very special guest in. Republican strategist rick tyler, cofounder of the founder strategies and msnbc political analyst. And Christine Quinn, vice chair of the new york state democratic party. Rick, i want to start with you. Mayor pete has an extraordinary profile. This guy is from a flyover state but he went to harvard, oxford. Speaks eight languages. Hes a veteran. His profile goes on and on. When trump voters look at him, what do they see because that profile that i barely got into, thats a tough one for fox news to knock. Hes got an extraordinary profile. He had an extraordinary day yesterday. An unfortunate day to announce for anybody else over the weekend because he has so dominated the news and generated an amazing amount of energy among democrats who are just cant stop talking about him. I think what mayor pete has done, and i would give tim ryan a little credit on this, too, he combined a couple of things. One is jobs, manufacturing. And manufacturing with the old jobs is that was a democratic stronghold. Combine that with the environment and talks about it in the future as a positive. As opposed to defending the past as a negative. In other words, the things that donald Trump Defends arent coming back, right . Coal jobs are not coming back. Nobody wants to work in a coal mine. People work in coal mines so their kids dont have to work in a coal mine. The type of manufacturing jobs donald trump talks about, theyre not coming back. But he has combined manufacturing with energy and the environment in a way that makes the trump voters who are nervous about their role in the future of automation, et cetera, to say, lets look at this guy because he seems to have a vision or a plan that will that i think i can be a part of as opposed to, ill protect your jobs. Christine, rick said it right at the top there. Anybody else who was trying to have a big kickoff weekend, it was tough because mayor pete is dominating in terms of news and attention. But youre seeing other candidates lead with more policy, right . Cory booker went into detail on criminal justice reform. Eric swalwell going big on guns. Elizabeth warren with a full tax plan at the end of last week. And mayor pete, though he is talking somewhat about vision is really talking mostly about his personal story. Its an extraordinary one. And values. Is that a Winning Strategy . Well, its the way someone like mayor pete has to start, right . Because hes been mayor of a small midwestern city. He hasnt been on the National Platform before. So who the heck is this guy . Cant even say his name and where is he from . What did he do . Three people in that office . So he had to establish who he is and hes done it in a spectacular way that really has drawn people to him. And as ive said before, hes not mayor pete, comma, the gay candidate for president. Its mentioned, but its not the first thing which is not even the third thing. So exciting. He had to start with, this is who i am totally. And hes done it brilliantly. He now has to get into the specifics of policy. So i dont really fault him for not having done that yet as it said in the piece. Now he has to open offices and get staff. If he doesnt do it in the near future, thats an issue. But not at this moment in time. The same about beto orourke. He needs to come out with more policy, too, so theres always steps in this process. But mayor pete is doing great. Mayor pete seems to be attracting or speaking to those Bernie Sanders voters who didnt vote for hillary clinton. And tonight Bernie Sanders is doing a town hall with fox news. We know the dnc decided not to do a debate with fox. What do you make of bernies move, on the eat excuse me, on the day when hes supposed to release ten years of taxes . Look, bernie wants what you have to do is turn the upper midwest states. So you have to turn michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania or ohio. If you can turn all of them, then the democrat will win. You dont even have to turn florida. So those people watch fox news. I dont think its i wouldnt criticize bernie for wanting to speak to those voters. I think one thing i want to say about mayor pete thats so interesting is that he, unlike beto, youll never see mayor pete on a skateboard. Theres a seriousness about him that beto you know, now that you said that, youre going to bite your tongue. Hes going to be on like a trampoline wearing i dont think so. I think christine is right. He needs to introduce himself. First they have to know you care before they care that you know. You have to make a connection with people. I dont have any doubt that mayor pete can talk extensively about policy. He seems to be a reasonably educated person. And the setting were in speaks to that. It didnt hurt an operative. If it rains on the crowd inside, thats a really bad news day, but no one is talking about that because it was an extraordinary speech and he delivered it well. If i owere on his team, as a tactical, the rollout was very impressive. Congresswoman ilhan were now seeing several top democrats, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, defending her against the president saying what he is doing is inciting violence against her. On the surface, that makes a ton of sense, especially if you compare what the president has said in the past about 9 11. While the towers were falling he said, well, now ive got the tallest building. He made up the awful lie that there were muslims standing on top of buildings in jersey city celebrating. And he took money dedicated for Lower Manhattan and used it relevant to midtown buildings he had. So hes behaved in the most horrible way. But still, hes going after her. And david frum from the atlantic actually wrote democrats may be making a mistake defending her because they will now be tied to her forevermore. And trump is setting a trap because congresswoman omar is in no way backing off in any way. In fact, she seems to be going deep. Could frum be making a point here . Theres a couple ways to look at this. Is this the best political situation for the democrats . I think everyone, including the congresswoman would agree no. But when the president of the United States singles somebody out in ways that are clearly based on targeting them for violence and were seeing that responded to with many, many threats against the Congress Member and her family. When that happens, even if the politics of it are safety first. You have to speak up. The president cannot act in threatening ways toward anyone, nonetheless, a member of congress. Good or bad politics, its about right or wrong and you have to stand up and say thats wrong. Right and wrong should certainly come before politics and also else really. We have a lot to cover this hour. Coming up, a deadly storm system taking aim right now at the northeast after unleashing destruction across the south. Nbcs Tammy Leitner is live in alto, texas, one of the hardest hit areas. Whats the extent of the damage there . The images look awful. Reporter good morning. The Tiny Community of alto, tex awas hit hard. This is a town of about 1,000 people and 80 of their homes and businesses were damaged. 50 people were injured. Let me give you an idea of the destruction. The people in this house, they survived, but if you take a look at this house, its hard to imagine how they survived. And every Single Family on this house, they have a story of survival. We spoke with one family, and they told me that they huddled together in the bedroom. And they prayed for 30 minutes as the tornado passed overhead. It blew off the roof. It knocked down the walls, and yet somehow they lived to walk out of that house. Now if you look just beyond this house, theres another house thats completely flattened. We spoke with the police chief, and he has a very Small Department of only six people. And as they go through this community, he told me its completely devastating for them because he knows every person in this community, and he feels helpless. Listen to what he told me. President trump keeping the immigration debate in the headlines. Front page stories in the New York Times and the Washington Post today highlighting the hardline positions the president and his key adviser Steven Miller are trying to make policy, and theyre willing to do battle with political friends and foes to make their vision a reality. Hans nichols is at the white house. Hans, help me understand this. The president is doubling down on his really tough rhetoric while at the same time, his plan to allow Asylum Seekers to stay and quote unquote dump them into sanctuary cities would actually be good for those Asylum Seekers. So what exactly is going on . Theres so many tensions in what were hearing from the white house in the official policy versus the president s twitter policy. Heres where we seem to be. The white house says they were reviewing the legality of busing migrants from the border to the sanctuary cities. At the same time, and heres the crucial part, they seem to be saying this isnt the president s preferred option. Just one of many options in the real task at hand is to Bring Congress back and to have them focus on some sort of more comprehensive solution. Heres what the president tweeted just this morning. He said congress should come back to d. C. Now and fix the immigration laws. Now at the same time over this president s threat to bus these migrants to sanctuary cities, its backfired in a way because you have so many democratic politicians, the mayor of oakland for one, talking about how they are still welcoming these migrants would still be welcome in their communities. And at the same time, the president saying erroneously that a lot of democrats are caving in and being hypocritical on this. The backdrop to all of this is potentially the release of the Mueller Report. Theres a little line in the New York Times saying the president is stoking thiS Immigration conversation because he wants to distract from the release of the Mueller Report which we could expect any day this week. Guess what, we have the ability to walk and chew gum at the same time, and we can cover both. Rick tyler, Christine Quinn back with me. Christine, maybe this is the president s distraction tactic to get us to focus on immigration. But hes got a bunch of democrats who are on the campaign trail criticizing him on immigration. But is it a trap . Is it a winning trap that he distracts, pushes them to talk immigration when they themselves dont yet have a plan . I think the democrats can also walk and chew gum and can respond to both. Look, i dont think any mayors out there of sanctuary cities are going to back down. I think thats just wrong what the president is saying. Going to back down from their commitment to immigrants and Asylum Seekers and the cities will take them. The concern i have is are we replicating what first happened with family separation. Making a policy at the federal level without the infrastructure to make sure the human beings are treated correctly and fairly and safe. Now if he wanted to have a meeting with mayors and people and come up with a strategy, it would be unique, but it would potentially could be very effective. But i do agree this is all trying in the hopes that americans and the media will see a shiny new thing and chase it and not be able to do two things at once. Rick, this has obviously become a huge story. Lets talk steve miller. Is he the fall guy for really President Trumps views . Hes not the fall guy. Hes the architect of all of these immigration policies that trump endorses. But the but theyre trumps views. Trump doesnt have views. He doesnt have hes not ideologically he started his Campaign Going down an escalator talking about mexican rapists and drug smugglers. He said all those things but hes not an ideological creature. Eat about himse hes all about himself and thats it. This is just a political view of this, if if and this is never going to happen, but if all those by the way, sanctuary cities are not harboring Illegal Immigrants the way the president likes to say, right . If those Asylum Seekers were going to San Francisco and new york, et cetera, they would be waiting their legal status and also able to get a work permit and theyd also count on the census when we start to redraw districts. And that is going to seriously advantage democrats because all those people, theyre going to get overrepresentation in the cities because all that population will count on the census toward representation. I have to ask you about the Mueller Report because the president S Immigration push is to distract us from mueller. Two weeks ago, the president said hes completely exonerated. Felt good about the report. Suddenly hes back on the 13 angry democrats, this report stic stinks. Were going to get this thing this week. Even though its 400 pages, 98 of it could be blacked out. What yoare you expecting . Im expecting, but a lot of black pages. A lot of sharpies that have gone on to the next life after having been drained by blacking out and redacting so much of the report. I hope thats not what comes to pass because more than anything, we need to know the truth. Whatever it is, we need to know the truth. Whoever its good or bad for so we can move on. Weve been in this place. Now we have an opportunity to see the report. Really know the facts and make some final determinations of next steps. Rick, i am guessing were all excited for transparency, but you watched bill barr last week. I watched him. Christine watched him. Do you have any sense of confidence or optimism we are going to get that transparency . Come on. You saw him. No, i made notes to buy ink stock. Sharpies. The Mueller Report, remember, investigations dont list things a wonderful president , heres a list of all his accomplishments. I know were going to analyze it to death legally. Its a political document because it involves the president. And its really its tantamount to an Oppo Research document. The president knows this because he tweeted this morning very specialingly, the Mueller Report, the investigators have exonerated me, no collusion, no obstruction. And then he goes on to say, investigate the investigators. What does that mean . Were going to investigate the people who just exonerated you . The only way to investigate it is to release the report. Let congress and the American People decide how the president behaved. But thats a political it may not rise to a criminal conspiracy but impeachment is not based on political conspiracy or legal standards. Its based on what members of congress think he did. And release it as fully as you can short of National Security issues. Release the report, release your taxes while youre at it. Our pencils are sharpened. Coming up, money, power, politics. Im going to be speaking to a Business Leader i am dying to meet this man. His entire life story is the American Dream. And this man says capitalism is what made that dream come true, but capitalism today in america, it is not working for everyone. His story and what he says must happen next to keep that dream alive. The arguments, we know the story. The president not releasing his taxes today on tax day. It is time for my favorite part of the show. Money, power, politics. You just heard it there on this tax day. The president will not be releasing his taxes at a time when most americans are scrambling to owe less on their tax bills, well, at this moment, theres a select group of very successful people who are actively seeking to pay more in taxes. Nbcs political reporter aly vitaly in charleston, south carolina, with this story. Tell me about these people. Weve heard guys like Warren Buffett for years complaining his secretary pays more than he does, but for people are they actually getting out their checkbooks at this point . Your favorite city in america, a little windy but youre right. While most americans are complaining about how high their tax bill is, i caught up with a group of individuals who want theirs to be higher because they think its only fair. Take a listen. I am one of the fabulous millionaires. Reporter Karen Stewart is rich. She also wants to pay more in taxes. I feel like its exploitative of them, unnecessary moor me to get away with that, and i want to pay my fair share. Sounds odd. It does sound odd. But why should we why should the folks with the money not pay . Stewart is part of the patriotic millionaires, a group of about 200 people with a combined net worth in the billions. Their mantra, tax the rich. Former blackrock executive morris pearl is the groups founder. We see how the system is skewed in our favor and how thats really hurting our country and in the very long run hurting us, too. Reporter scott nash agrees. No country is going to have a safe, sustainable economy without a strong middle class. Right now Mitch Mcconnell reporter listen closely and you could almost mistake the conversations happening here at the d. C. Gathering with the conversations happening here. The rules have been rigged in washington and in wall street to favor the wealthy and the well connected. Ensuring that we dont have princes and princesses, kings and queens, a concentration of wealth and power and privilege. We are going to demand that the wealthy and powerful start paying their fair share of taxes. When you hear them say we need to tax the wealthy more, youre hearing that conversation from the perspective of, okay, theyre talking about me. Yeah, thats true because taxing poor people, or regular people or working class people, thats taking money out of the economy. When you tax somebody like me less money, well, that makes my stock portfolio change in value a little bit. But that doesnt really affect anybody else at all. Reporter a recent online poll found 6 in 10 americans favor an additional tax on wealth which might be why three Democratic Candidates so far say they want to do it. And at least four more have other approaches to taxing the rich to pay for programs to close the wealth gap. Whats the right way to go about this . To right this tax wrong. Theres a lot of possibilities. Whether we have higher tax rates and the highest income people, whether we tax all forms of income the same way, people who make money from their investments versus people who make money from their labor. Whether we tax people based on wealth. Theres a lot of possibilities out there. And stephanie, you know this well, but when he talks about there being a lot of possibilities out there, there are, and Democratic Candidates are talking about them. But one that polls well and is leading the pack here is coming from senator Elizabeth Warren when she talks about the idea of taxing wealth. For most americans they pay taxes on their paycheck, their income. For wealthier americans who see their wealth accrue through things like stocks and real estate, theyre not paying taxes on those things until they dispose of them. Even then its at a lesser rate. So you can take it from there because i know you know this stuff better than i do. Thats the argument here from the patriotic millionaires. To them, this is only the right thing to do. As long as the loopholes exist, the wealthiest americans will dive through them. Joining me to discuss this, a dear friend of mine, cnbc contributor advisers dan nathan and a man i am so excited to meet, a true American Dream. Peter, the author of capitals arise, a manifesto that urges ceos and executives to reevaluate our current model of capitalism. Peter, you say that capitalism has been slowly committing suicide. Walk us through whats wrong with our Current System because capitalism made you the successful man you are today. Completely. I am a believer in capitalism. Im a believer in america. I did live the American Dream because i came here at 15. I didnt speak a word of english and hadnt gone to school for four years but i was lucky enough to get a good education, and the rest i was able to do because this is america. So what we have today is a different version of what happened to america in the modern era of capitalism which was the 40 years from right after the war to about 1980s, mid1980s. Which was what . Which was a version of capitalism that had a different governance. What i mean is, what are the rules of the game . What do we ask business to do . In those 40 years we ask business to optimize many stakeholders, including the customer, cant do without them. The employees, you have to treat them right. The corporation itself, because the corporation needs to be fed and invented and invented. The shareholder brings capital and the nation in the community and they will optimize and during that period of time, you know, everybody want, the top 10 of america grew during this 44 period. About close to 100 . And the bottom 90 grew about 85, 90 . Those are amazing. Everybody won, in todays version of capitalism, the governance clangd frhanged from. Now we say lets focus on the tax holder. The maximum shareholder value. Right there. Short termism, is that the root of all evil. If you are a ceo, with the best of intentions, if you focus on anything other than profitability, will you have an activist investor ready to pull you out of that seat . Peteren and i were having th conversation before we came on here. It is about incenttiives. You think in the 70s and 80s when our incentives here shipped things out to central america. They realized it was good for Profit Margins and high managers, expectations, that sort of thing. Thats what we are dealing with. When you think about that, the short term is a function of the fact that these managers have these masses. Im not sure how you turn that around any time soon. But theyre not asking for that to be changed. We heard from Business Leaders, whether its larry fink, jamie dimon, they have benefitted from it. Jamie dimon has an enormous amount of lobbyists in washington as we speak protecting their business model. So is there any reason to believe its more than talk from these guys . Thus far, theyre giving a whole lot of money to charity, schaarty isnt going to fix this perversive charity system. You are 100 right. I love when you say is that. Absolutely terrific, stephanie. Heres the situation, business must change. We are dealing with a passive coming on us. What we dont talk about enough is the seriousness or the crisis in the other america. Call it a zip code america. We are in deep trouble. These people are suffering. Gdp is a terrible measure. It doesnt measure the health of the country. It measures how well us 20 do. Thats what it does, so america is in trouble. And, in fact, if you really look i was telling you how well Free Enterprise capitalism for 40 years in this version of Free Enterprise capitalism, the top 10 grew about 120, 30 and the bottom 90 lost 3 . Then how did you do this . Your personal story from being were in america without your parents, how did all of this worked . It worked for me because i got a good education and most everybody else got a good education in those days. And why did you get that education . Because it was available to all. Because we used to have one High School Per town. Everybody went to the same high school. Today we have almost 1200 segregation of education. So these kids dont have a chance. They dont have Early Education from the age of 3. We do, our kids do and grandkids do. There is hard lay kinder garten in that zip code. So these kids go to the 1st grade, its a dilapidated plant. There is no money for after schools programs. There is no money to pay teachers well. Because there are 35 kids now in one classroom with teachers that are harassed, not well educated. Its a problem. Who is responsible for changing this and how, you cant get elected if the argument is, my name is stephanie ruhle. Id like to change your taxes. They borrowed 1. 5 trillion from the future and handed it to the donor class. Peters view is philanthropy cant fix that problem of education. That seems like thats ground zero. But maybe plan the thrown can fix education. Right . Weve heard that. Jamie dimon cant come on the First Quarter call and say our margins are down because we are paying this, we are doing that, we are trying to make this country a better place, because his stock will get hit. He can personally take some of his 1. 3 billion in wealth and do the sorts of this i think so that can fix an educational system within a certain area. Philanthropy, could it be enough . No philanthropy is fabulous, fabulo fabulous, my friend gave hundreds of millions to nyu. I work for a rival. I applaud him for doing that. But we are talking about scale here. So plan thilanthropy is not eno. Philanthropy will always be needed. I want to go back to taxes, business is importantly, wheres has the wherewithal all. We have to change our attitude about how we treat people in business. Were not paying them fairly for 40 years, wages have been flat. Productivity goes up, innovation goes up. Profit turbo charged up and wages are flat. And, in fact, thats why donald trump got elected in 16. He saw the problem. Thats why Bernie Sanders gave hillary a hard time. But what has happened in the last couple years, nothing . Well, donald trump saw the problem. Then he hooked up the donor class when it came to policy. Dan, peter, thank you so, so much. We all know the problem. What we need to do is find a solution. Maybe we need to revisit what it means to be a fiduciary. All right.
