Lawyer agreed to cooperate with prosecutors after he previously said he would take a bullet for the president. And under review. An extensive report from the New York Times into duetch banks relationship with President Trump. Details that the bank saw multiple red flags over a two decade relationship that included bankruptcies and inflated assets. Yet they still gave him more than 2 billion to finance his real estate projects. And making their big pitch. 2020 Democratic Candidates come out swinging for the voters all the way to the fence. Throwing out big ideas on guns, term limits, and the future of elections. My view is that every vote matters. We can have National Voting and that means get rid of the Electoral College. We begin with a whole lot of new documents and information coming out this morning and its related to the special counsel and one of the congressional investigations surrounding President Trump. Now some of that information was released seconds ago. I have a great team here to break it down. But, first, i want to explain exactly what is happening today. The House Judiciary Committee is sifting through tens of thousands of documents handed over as part of the committees broad investigation into obstruction of justice. Now remember, the committee reached out it a huge number of people looking for information. 81 in all. Including the president s two eldest sons as well as current and former associates. Chairman jerry nadler said they have gotten a great response and even named steve bannon as one particularly forthcoming. He said the white house, on the other hand, giving them nothing. Ultimately people have to respond to us. Unless the president personally invokes an executive privilege, which is a rare thing, they have no immunity. They have to respond to us. Of course, the white house has been stone walling the Judiciary Committee not just on these documents but stone walling generally. Steve bannon himself did not weigh in on nadlers investigation, but he did speak about Robert Mueller in a brand new interview with sky news. He predicted his investigation is going to come up empty. Bannon didnt trash Robert Mueller himself. I said from day one, if they name a special prosecutor, it is what it is. You have to play by the rules. I think bob mueller is a respectful guy. Hes a combat veteran, marine corps. Veteran. Hes renowned in the fbi. I think hes run the process and i said from day one, if roger stone and wick kkileaks is all got on russian collusion, you got nothing. The search warrant and other documents related to the fbi raids on the president s former attorney, Michael Cohen, has just been made public. A u. S. District judge ordered prosecutors to release them after requests from the media. Some of that information is redacted but we could still learn a lot. Including details about how the cohen investigation began, what crimes were being investigated, and what information supported the judges decision to sign off. I want to bring in tom winter who just started reading through the documents. What do you know . Stefanie, we know the investigation into Michael Cohen began in the summer of 2017 and around july and august the special counsels office was able to get a search warrant from Michael Cohens email accounts. From that point forward, they continued that investigation turning it over to the u. S. Attorneys office for the Southern District of new york. The federal prosecutors here eventually got Michael Cohen to plead guilty to eight specific counts back in august of last year. In addition to that, stefanie, we know those emails and other information pertinent to that investigation was turned over, rather, in february of last year. In april, of course, Michael Cohens apartment was searched but this is confirming reporting that nbc news and others have done over the course of the past year or so, which is this investigation originally came out of the special counsels office. It was then brought in the federal prosecutors in new york, muellers team and the prosecutors in new york to eventually bring forward that case. Cohen would later plead guilty to several to one count and several instances of lying to congress in november of last year. Stefanie, the search warrants for each specific address, including the safety deposit box, basically a search warrant for cohens home, apartment, his office, some of the search warrants go over 260 pages. Theres a lot to read through here. But it provides a little bit of a time line that is one of the pieces of information were hoping were able to get which is the time line of today. When did the investigation begin . So we know that started in earnest in the summer of 2017 by the special counsels office into early of 2018. Okay. I want to bring my panel in. Former u. S. Attorney and robert bianchi, a former prosecutor. From what we know so far, why is it important for us to get the documents . Cant we wait for the Mueller Investigation . At this point, im not sure why its so pressing to see what is in there well, its not important. But its important for the point of public consumption. Everyone wants to know. What i found odd about what the judge did in the particular case is he said that no data from the Campaign Finance issues could go out because it could jeopardize a criminal probe, yet indicates that the Public Interest and underlying subject matter that implicated to 2016 president ial election is substantial. Hes going to allow these documents to come out. To me, those are contradictory phrases. God only knows what is in the documents. Here is what i dont get, paul. At the time of the raid, or the president said it was illegal. It was inappropriate. He said i remember he wrote Attorney Client privilege is dead. Help me understand Attorney Client privilege, the fact that cohens office was able to be raided and now we can see the documents well, thats a great question. Let me take a step back and say that search warrant and one of the reasons i think its important for us to be thinking about it now and your specific question about privilege proves the true independence of the Southern District of new york. It takes a bold Prosecution Office to execute a search warrant on any lawyers offices. Let alone the lawyer for the president of the United States. If theres no privilege capabilitied there was no true privilege because crimes were being committed. Not legal advice given. The privilege doesnt stand. And the evidence weve seen so far either in the affidavit or mr. Cohens testimony before Congress Shows there was no privilege here. The greatest Trump Supporters right now will tell you their fear is not so much from bob mueller and the special counsels office but from the Southern District of new york and this search warrant affidavit is more proof as to why it is the Trump Administration should be genuinely concerned about this group of independent prosecutors. The greatest Trump Supporters continue to call this a waste of time and a witch hunt. When steve bannon turns over hundreds, maybe thousands of pages and people are salivating saying my goodness, he could be turning on the guy. Couldnt he just be fooling nadler here and saying, great, go through this. Theres nothing there. I mean, steve bannon has been one thing. I just had a case where they dumped 6,000 pages of documents and you go through 6,000 pages of documents and there was nothing in them that had any value to them whatsoever. Which could be the case with bannon. Absolutely. Its about the quality of the information. The mere fact youre presenting thousands of documents its responsive to the subpoena doesnt meanly mean theres anything of value. It could be defending donald trump in certain instances. We dont know yet. Yeah. If steve bannon is telling sky news dont think youre going find much, well see. I wouldnt want to be the person having to go through the pages. As jerry nadler said last night, paul, the white house is stone walling the investigation. Thats no surprise. Its no surprise but lets remember, too, stefanie, that this was, if you will with a polite letter request to turn over documents. The House Judiciary Committee has yet to use the most powerful tool, the subpoena. Lets see how the white house and President Trumps personal lawyers respond once this request has the effect of law and the weight of a potential court order to turn over the documents, as well. That may change attitudes on the other side of that request well, well soon find out. Thank you so much. Now we turn to a different situation. A crisis that continues to get worse in the midwest. Historic flooding has swallowed up neighborhoods in wisconsin, iowa, and nebraska. It left at least three people, at this point, dead. Vice president pence will be traveling to nebraska today to survey some of the worst damage. Take a look right now on your screen at the sidebyside pictures showing the pine fllatr and the missouri river. Nbc is in omaha. Cathy, walk us through the situation where you are specifically and how much longer these people will be in for this. Reporter stefanie, good morning to you. You dont have to travel far to see the devastation. Up close behind me is the swollen missouri river. Its running high and fast. We have a drone up in the air to give you another point. On a normal day, this would be a park and people would be able to walk around. The drone is hovering over a brown statute. I was told you could walk around the statute on a dry day. But clearly you see everything is under water now. But fortunately the water slowly starting to recede and residents are able to get back home in some spots and theyre returning to some serious damage to their property. Some people are seeing a lot of damage to their basements. Some people have lost everything. But later on today, Vice President mike pence will be in the area to get a closer look at the devastation. Fortunately weve had some sunnier days so it helped dry this area out but rain is back in the forecast today. But the big concern now moving forward is that all of this flood water will be heading downstream. Downstream from the missouri and mississippi so all this could be pushing to the southern states. So in the coming weeks, it could be potentially bracing for flooding emergencies there. My goodness. Sending our thoughts to everyone in the region. Cathy, thank you so much. Well leave it there. Coming up, were veal revealing new details about the connection between President Trump and duetch bank, where i worked for eight years. Youre having one more bite no one more bite kraft. For the win win. Time for money power politics. We have known President Trump had an extensive relationship with my former employer, Deutsche Bank, but a new detailed extraordinary report from the new yoNew York Times out how deep the decades old relationship goes. After speaking with many former and current Board Members and executives, those interviews revealed that nearly over two decades Deutsche Banks leaders repeatedly saw red flags surrounding mr. Trump. There was a disastrous bond sale, a promised loan that relied on a bankers forged signature, wild exaggerations of mr. Trumps wealth, all of this comes as Deutsche Bank is expected to start handing over communications about President Trump to congressional committees on the hill. David enridge is the finance editor for the New York Times. He wrote this extensive piece. As a Deutsche Bank alumni, you nailed it. I know you reached out to the white house for comment, they referred you to the trump organization. Amanda miller designed to comment. Help me understand what Deutsche Bank has told you. Its really important for people to understand the culture of Deutsche Bank. When it moved to the United States, it was a dog track. They took massive risk. They were desperately trying to build their name and build their brand in the americas and they took way more risk than their peers did. Yeah. It was by design. They gave employees and executives a clear mandate to push the envelope as far as they could, make as much money as quickly as they could and do whatever it takes to make a buck. And it was very clear incentive structure. So you saw bankers doing exactly what you expect. And in some cases you saw them lending to people or institutions no one else would touch. Donald trump is is a classic example of that. They threw money at him even when he defaulted on the loans, sued the bank, even when there were claims about inflating his assets. They kept throwing money at him. Why is that . Lets go to the institutional side of the bank that had done the failed bond sale. Donald trump came to them, after the apprentice and grossly inflated his worth and they said sir youre not worth this. He said look at my brand. The brand of the apprentice. And the institutional side said go fish. Why would the private bank open the door . Well, same story. They were eager to grow. They saw the Private Banking business in the u. S. , which is what caters to really rich people, they saw a need and they saw an ability to make money off these people. They were going to grow in the way to do that, they said, to bank clients in bigger ways than their competitors were. And that meant they would do big business with clients that other institutions would not touch, donald trump is a great example. Was it about his brand name . He wasnt super rich and he was a terrible Risk Assessment given that he failed to pay back his loans. He sued the bank. But he was a big flashy name. And a bank like Deutsche Bank doesnt have names like that. We know theres that Deutsche Bank pro am in august, you detail it in the piece. They loved having donald trump show up. They loved it and doing promotional videos with him and ivanka. They milked the relationship for all its worth. When rosemarys team comes in on the Private Banking side, as far as we know, those loans have not defaulted. What we dont know for sure because trump is in the white house and we have no disclosures about this. They probably did make money off that. The problem is while theyre earning money on managing his assets and on Interest Rates on the loans, its a huge selfinflicted, you know, tarnishing of their reputation. Deutsche bank has become synonymous, i think, in the United States with Money Laundering for russians an lending to donald trump. After President Trump won, how did Deutsche Bank handle all this . Panic. And the first thing they did was assess a report, a number of reports, actually, on how they got into the mess. It turns out people at the board level and some of the Senior Executives aren executives hadnt realized donald trump was a major client. Even though they were making promotional videos with him. He was there swinging a golf club . Theres a certain amount of willful ignorance, i think, here. I think its a testament to the fact that the banks top executives was changing this. The bank was in the financial mess. They were on their third or fourth ceo in probably five years. There was a lot of confusion. Also, look, they were so seager to be doing the business they looked the other way. You know, you put your blinders on and you dont see what you dont want to see and you keep doing things that make money. Portions of the bank were. Sort of that rich burns side of the house said no thanks and rosemary said come on in. Part of the cloud weve heard since President Trump won has been ties to russia. Do you find any direct links . Something that stands out about deutsche as opposed to other global banks, after the crisis in russia in the 90s, the only bank that stayed in russia was Deutsche Bank. The chairman Joseph Ackerman had ties to the bank of cypress where Paul Manafort laundered money, where will burr ross, i believe, was a board member wilbur ross was a part owner along with a russian ol garage. I have not found any evidence, any direct evidence that Deutsche Bank it has been a vehicle for russian money to donald trump. Ive talked to a lot of people and i think if that was obvious to most executives, i would know about it. Ive talked to so many of them. On the other hand, i, unfortunately, dont have subpoena power. And congress does. And theyre about to use that subpoena power. The new York Attorney general does and using that subpoena power on Deutsche Bank. It wouldnt surprise me if theres more to be found here. I havent found any evidence. Based on your reporting, is there anything here that would point to the relationship being illegal . Because, at this point, you could say its sleazy, it didnt make sense, they took too much risk. All of those being the case would point to Deutsche Banks stock and the performance theyve had since the crisis, which has been disastrous. Right. They took way too much risk before the crisis and they have failed ever since. But as far as criminal wrong doing, is there anything you have reported . You know, im not a lawyer and i should be careful in what i say, but the i know that what congress and what the new York Attorney general are investigating is among other things evidence of bank fraud. So theyre looking for evidence among other things that donald trump inflated his assets, lied about his wealth in order to get loans from Deutsche Bank. And under certain circumstances that can be a crime and thats one of the things that prosecutors in new york, at least, are investigating. And the question will be why would Deutsche Bank have signed off on it. You dont simply trust what someone puts down on a piece of paper. Amazing reporting. Congratulations. We have to take you back to the breaking news this morning. The search warrant and other documents related to the fbi raids on the president s former attorney, Michael Cohen, have been made public. I want to bring back tom winter. Hes been Speed Reading through the document along with my lawyers paul and bob. What have we learned . Stefanie, what we learned is, you know, i referenced some of the warrants were 263 pages in length. Those were the warrants that were served on Michael Cohens physical addresses. What were learning this morning, stefanie, is the timeline of the investigation, specifically back in july of 2017. The special counsels office was able to seek and get through the fbi a search warrant for one of Michael Cohens gmail addresses. In august of 2017 they were able to get access to his icloud account. And apparently a second gmail address according to the search warrant. They were able to get access to that account. And then in february of 2008, so february of last year, literally a little over a year ago. They were able to shift over certain aspects of their investigations, the special counsels investigation into Michael Cohen. So basically what happened is you see that the bulk of the information was turned over in february of last year. So barely a year ago. One of the other things were starting to learn is the techniques that Law Enforcement was able to use to be able to get these warrants. Specifically they used a device called a triggerfish. Its kind of a Law Enforcement term for a device that is able to specifically locate cell phones. So they wanted to be able to establish that Michael Cohen was, in fact, at a hotel room in manhattan while his apartment was undergoing renovations. They were able to establish his cell phone was in use in that room to prove to a judge that he would be there to get the warrant. Federal agents were able to get access what is called a pen register on Michael Cohens cell phone. According to one of the warrants that was released today. That would give them the ability to look at who Michael Cohen was calling and when and for how long as well as calls he received when and for how long. But not be able to monitor the content of the calls. In other words, they couldnt listen in but they at least knew who he was calling and when. So were starting to learn that this morning. Theres a couple hundred pages of documents. I caution folks. I see people on twitter saying 300 pages of documents. Yes, there are that many, but as is typical with search warrants basically a significant amount of the documentation has to do with boilerplate language that federal agents use to prove to a judge, look, this is the type of thing were requesting. This gives us the authority. This is my background and experience, which is why im able to say some of the things im able to say to you in the process of getting the search warrant. The actual information that we learn here as far as new facts in the investigation is really limited. Theres over a dozen pages of redacted information as it relates to the payments to Stormy Daniels and karen mac dougall. But the information people are trying to get more information about how those Payment Schemes were put together, theyll be a little bit disappointed this morning because the judge did allow prosecutors to be able to redact that information. The good old redactments. Mr. Bianchi, what is your take here . You havent seen the pages yet. Its what i said before, the Campaign Finance issues being still redacted make no sense to me. Theres been testimony about it. Theres been pleas of guilty to it. But the judge said theres an Ongoing Investigation with respect to it. And the thing i also find confounding the judge said, as we indicated before, stefanie, that the public has a right to know the information that were getting today because they have a right to understand the integrity of the 2016 president ial election, which is substantial. So theres something in these documents that lead the judge to believe this had something to do with the 2016 president ial election. We obviously know the hush money payments had something to do with that. Could it be the trump tower russia scenario in there . I dont know. We havent reviewed the documents but somehow that judge felt it was important for the public to know how it influenced that election. Paul . I see in this search warrant and in the search warrant that has been revealed, stefanie, its a careful special counsels Office Seeking search warrants to obtain email accounts that were held by mr. Cohen and then the handoff, if you will, from the special counsels office to the Southern District of new york. Again, an extraordinarily bold move on behalf of prosecutors to search the house, the office of a lawyer and especially the lawyer of the president. Anybody who has been criticizing the Southern District of new york or the special counsels office ought to take a look at the careful and very studious way in which these prosecutors have gone about their business to make sure that the Fourth Amendment rights of everybody were protected and they did their job as they should in an apolitical fashion well, before we go, they have been waiting patiently. New york times oped columnists with me. What is your take thus far, gentlemen . The Campaign Finance allegation so far strike me as the most damaging and potentially impeachable for the president of all the broad pan plea of allegations against the president. These obtained a conviction, a jail sentence for mr. Cohen. One of the things that is extremely important here is to understand how this story might be different from the john edwards story. Youll remember the john edwards, the former Vice President ial candidate had an affair he was trying to cover up with hush money payments. He was able to escape a conviction because it wasnt clear whether that was in the service of influencing an election. In this case, its clear, given the timing of the payments just before the november of 2016 election they were material and thats why i think this is interesting and why it should be why the president should be worried about it. Im feeling an uhhuh coming from you. The will of deceit going on here gets deeper and deeper every time documents like this are released. I dont think weve even scratched the surface yet of how far it goes. I dont. What makes you think that . Look, the piece you did on Deutsche Bank in the previous segment. Right. I think weve talked about Deutsche Bank for a long time. Theres more than that meets the eye there. I think were beginning to scratch the surface and start ripping band aids off. Prosecutors wont let up on this. I think theyre on to something and these trails will take a long time to cover and do the ground work but i think theres a lot more there that will lead to more than Campaign Finance violations. The judge said you could not give any data with regard to Campaign Finance violations. Theres individual ones who may be under investigation and may be the reason that was not allowed to be released. I cant think of any other person involved in the transaction. Watch for it. All right. Wow. A lot of breaking news this morning. The democratic president ial hopeful is coming out with big ideas as they try to fire up voters with calls to abolish the Electoral College. Theyre going after Drug Companies over the Opioid Crisis and taking President Trump to task on manufacturing jobs. Well go live to the campaign trail next. Its going to be more like a rally here. Its orourkes first trip to a big College Campus an we expect a big enthusiastic crowd here. Weve essentially see this texas candidate get an education in midwest issues. Essentially learning and developing his positions on some midwest issues as he goes. He got a question about the flint water crisis and has been talking about Sherrod Browns key issues, the dignity of work. And last night in an exclusive interview he waded into the question about the gm at lordstown and the president s attacks on the union there. Take a listen. The president with his actions has added insult to injury. Not only has he done nothing to prevent this job loss, he actually blames the workers and their leadership. Hes literally financed gms ability through this tax cut to move jobs elsewhere. Thati expect him to talk abo the issues that will affect young people here at penn state. And then off to New Hampshire tonight. Hans, youve been speaking to voters. I find it interesting. Said d. C. Politics have become too partisan. If i look at the two parties right now, theyre pushing further and further to the left and the right. Are they not listening to voters youre talking to . There may be i think when weve been talking to voters on both sides of the mississippi, again, steph, you look at the way the 2016 election went. A lot of these old obama counties went from turn. Those are the voters were trying to talk to. Theyre talking about the importance of Climate Change and the agricultural community. There is a concern about partisan pickering. They the president to stop. I guess im very concerned about why people arent getting along in washington. It seems like everything becomes so partisan. Thats a big concern to me. Why does it have to be whether youre a republican or democrat, i guess. Why cant we put that part aside and our officials need to look at what the people theyre representing really want and need. But, stefanie, to your point on sort of the fringes the party pulling the lawmakers apart and pulling people apart, the local congressman here had a Birthday Party last night. Some bernie supporters were protesting it demanding medicare for all. They want to see action on climate. You know, this part of the country is going to be so crucial in 2020. Here is my pitch to you, we float the mississippi. Were going to wait for it to warm up a little bit and talk to voters all down it. Because thats where this election is going to be. Its their opinions and views that really matter. Every vote counts. Thank you. Joining me now to discuss these big ideas that weve heard from some of these candidates over the last 24 hours a political reporter for axios and Bret Stephenson and joel. You were a senior strategies for barack obama and Hillary Clinton. At this point, i know theres a lot of people in the race. Who stands out to you . When i saw Elizabeth Warren last night, i felt like she was talking to the trump voter. She was talking about her mom needing to go out and get a job to support the family when they were in a position where her father couldnt. She said today that couldnt happen. Thats the forgotten voter shes talking to. I think Elizabeth Warren is talking to people the way a lot of democrats, too. The party that has been and always will be for working people in this america. Not corporations and the super wealthy. We saw it play out in the midterms when republicans who started out running ads on the famous tax consults pulled them off the air because they were alienating voters in the middle you need to win. I think in president ial elections down the road, you have to win the middle. Neither party has major of ity america. What is in the middle is 65 of americans think we have to deal with Climate Change. We have farmers being wiped out and peoples homes being wiped out in the midwest today. You have in louisiana people who live on the borders of rivers figuring how they push back against the inevitable devastation coming to our communities. We cannot put our heads in the sand. So the great new deal might not be every answer for every person but americans want us to deal with Climate Change. Were the only country in the world who pulled out of the paris accords. We cannot put our hands in this sand when it comes to the future. As youve heard me say, president ial elections are about big things not small things. About the future not the past. Theyre about their lives and not your life. Candidates lives and bios matter but its about their lives and futures. Right now im not seeing a democrat in the race who could easily beat donald trump. I think thats the message that the democrats have to take to heart if they win the election. I would like to see donald trump no longer be president but i see a Democratic Party that is talking itself too far to the left. People might agree on the subject of the importance of Climate Change, but in Washington State a blue state where they voted on carbon taxes, that vote went down. So democrats have to be careful that the solutions they offer are appealing towards the center of the country. The country is not bronx and queens. Its Sherrod Browns america. Its that side of america. Maybe Amy Klobuchar can do it. I dont see anybody else who can. Democrats who think they have it in the bag and can move as far as left as they want, theyre going to make the same mistake in 1972 who went down in impeachment. We could talk about who wins the middle in america. Democrats have won the popular vote. It doesnt win a president ial election. Ask Hillary Clinton and al gore. Thats fine. But the point is, if you want to talk about the majority of americans, they have voted for democrats in now six or seven out of the last eight president ial elections. Donald trump lost the popular vote by more votes than any other president elected ever and historically, by the way, president s who won the Electoral College and won the popular vote, only one got e reelected bush in 2004. They have the most interesting story today is axios. President trumps Reelection Campaign has quietly spent nearly twice as much than the entire democratic field combined on facebook and google. We know thats where the eye balls are. It was the president s magic in the last election. Can you speak about this . Yeah. One thing overcovered was candidate trumps use of facebook and social media, twitter, Different Things to reach voters. Its been an under covered story so far. Hes been quietly outspending all the Democratic Candidates campai combined on facebook. Thats revealing for a couple of reasons. One, its coming at a time when democrats in the national Democratic Party is shying away from facebook. Theyre distrustful of facebook as a platform for politics and for them to spread their messages. Donald trump sees the value in this. Him and his team know they need to meet voters where they are and think about how many folks are on facebook as a platform. Its revealing because we havent heard a lot about President Trumps reelection strategy. I guess other than the speculation of the government shut down and him relying on a border wall fight to win reelection. I dont know if thats a strategy or not. But now were learning more about his Digital Strategy with the other folks working on his campaign team. Hes relying on social media in a similar way we saw in 2016 now heading into 2020. Social 2020. Social media, where theres basically no standards whatsoever. Or far lower standards than, lets say, an actual political ad on television. How dangerous is that . We know that facebook i mean, this is the epicenter of misinformation. Perfect for conspiracy theorists. And that is where the president is spending all of this money. And you can say, its corrupt, its amoral, but maybe it works. Look, unquestionably, facebook and social Media Advertising works. We knew that in 2008 and even more so in 2012 in president obamas campaigns. And its going to accelerate. I think you have to remember, it took us a while to put in some regulations on television advertising, also, when we gravitate towards new media and new ways to communicate with voters, it takes time for us to catch up sometimes. I think its going to get more sophisticated, more effective, our ability to target people at an individual level is virtually at 100 right now. So well have to see if some of the less than High Integrity techniques are going to be controlled at some point or not. All right. We have to leave it there. Its stunning, we can have the most specific targeted ads, but those platforms cant seem to stop the trolling and the spreading of hate. I want to get into this. The world is reacting to a second potential terror attack in four days. Three people now dead and five injured after a gunman opened fire on a tram car in a heavily muslim neighborhood in the netherlands yesterday. The victims include two men, ages 28 and 49 and a 19yearold woman. An investigation is now in full swing as authorities are treating the attack as a possible terrorist incident. This attack, of course, comes as the community in christchurch, new zealand, is still reeling from fridays massacre that killed 50 worshippers at two local mosques. Remembe remember, schools and houses of worship. Thats where people seek refuge. In an impassioned speech in front of the parliament this morning, the Prime Minister refused to say the shooters name, saying she would instead, quote, speak the names of those who lost their lives rather than the name of the man who took them. But she also asked parliament to look into the role social media played in the attack. There is no question that ideas and language of division and hate have existed for decades, but the form of distribution, the tools of organization, they are new. We cannot simply sit back and accept that these platforms just exist. This is a really important conversation. Joining me now, former secretary of the department of Homeland Security under president obama, jeh johnson. Mr. Secretary, you have been speaking recently on this need to return to decency and civility, not pointing the finger at one specific group or another. How did we get here and why . Well, stephanie, thanks for having me on this important topic. There is, without a doubt, a rising tide of hate and violence based upon racism, bigotry, islamophobia, antisemitism in this country and now across the planet. Most recently, the dutch attack in new zealand. When i read, for example, the manifesto left by the coast guard officer who was arrested in maryland. Last month, in maryland, i could not help but think that he and others who have turned to violence felt as though, in their own deranged mind that they were emboldened and encouraged to do so by some very large voices that perhaps would even condone what theyre doing, in their deranged minds. And so without a doubt, theres a correlation between what these people who turn to violence feel they should do and the rhetoric that we actually see online. And so, what ive been advocating is that our leaders, those who command a microphone, have to raise the level of civility and accept responsibility for their words, which lead to certain actions. In the minds of certain deranged people, it makes violence inevitable. And so our leaders have to accept responsibility for this. People do listen to their leaders. Is it born out of hate or is it born out of hopelessness . Because when you hear from many of these people, when you hear from these shooters, it almost seems as though their life wasnt working, they felt forgotten, and then shoomehow ended up on a path that took them to this terrible place. But if its starting truly from a place of isolationism, isnt there a way to get to them and fix this before we get to this place . Because of social media and these groups that can find one another, it just gets worse and worse quickly. Yes, all of the above, feeling of isolation, hatred, racism, and you are correct, which is why when i was secretary, we spent a lot of time supporting efforts at the Community Level to identify someone whos heading in the wrong direction, who may be headed toward a violent path and prevent and interdict that person, even before Law Enforcement might get involved. That became, when i was secretary, the cornerstone, really, of our Homeland Security Counterterrorism Mission here in the United States, which includes not only foreigninspired terroristtype attacks, but also violence of a domesticbased extremist nature. I think weve got to go after one as much as the other. Were seeing that now, reflected in the tragic violence in this country and abroad. So when you think about the southern border and all the people across the country who are not at the southern border, but theyre watching the news and theyre being told, theres an invasion happening, what do you say to those people . You have that audience to help them feel better or more constructive in their community. Stephanie, the overwhelming, overwhelming majority of people crossing our southern border today, and theyre crossing today at numbers we havent seen in 12 years, are women, children, families leaving Central America because they are desperate to get out of guatemala, honduras, el salvador, because of the poverty and violence in those countries. They are victims of violence. And had no choice but to flee a burning building. We have extremist elements in this country. We have far too many that turn to violence, but simply focusing on the southern border is not the answer to our Homeland Security problems. Youre correct to identify that we need to do more at a local level to interdict, turning people away from violence who may feel a sense of isolation, hatred, and bitterness. And thats a domesticbased mission. Yesterday, Kirstjen Nielsen spoke, and it was a surprise because the president certainly doesnt say it, but she listed the threat of a cyber attack at the top of her list of concerns. Thats not something we hear from the president. What do you think the the biggest threat . When i came to the job of secretary of Homeland Security, i had very much a counterterrorism focus from my days at the department of defense. I used to say that counterterrorism needs to be the cornerstone of our mission. I quickly concluded that cybersecurity needed to be the other cornerstone. Its gotten worse. Its gotten worse. And it will get worse, in my judgment, it will get worse before it gets better. Cyberspace is the new battle space. There are attacks occurring daily, hourly, since i entered this building. And so dhs is in a position to be the governments prime spokesperson, mover and shaker on this issue, in partnership with the private sector. In my judgment, we havent done enough yet to build those Public Private partnerships. And its always easier to be on offense than it is on defense, without a doubt. And we have yet to turn the corner. Those of us on defense still struggle to keep up. Those of us on offense are getting more ingenious, more tenacious, more aggressive all the time. And quickly, before i go, if our leaders arent sending a message to return us to civility, what can our individuals do every day . As we enter the election season, i think its incumbent upon voters, as a prerequisite for the job of elected office to demand that those who command a microphone except responsibility and the consequences for their words. Words do matter. People do listen. And so, when our leaders lower the standards for civility and behavior, all the rest of us feel like were entitled to do the same thing. And unfortunately, for those who are dangerously deranged, it makes violence inevitable. Well, then we have to demand better. Thank you so much for joining me. This couldnt be a more important message. Thank you. At this time. All right, you know how i end this show. You are not leaving on a low note. There is always good news somewhere and we think good news rules. I love this story. Anything is possible with an open heart and an open mind and some hard work. This 18yearold boy, tani, is living proof. He and his family fled religious persecution in their home country of nigeria. They settled into a homeless shelter in new york city. And a year ago, he excuse me, he began attending local Public School two years ago and just over a year ago, this little boy learned to play chess. Last weekend, just one year after he learned the game against kids with all sorts of coaches and tutors and parents determined for them to win, this young man went undefeated in the new york state chess championship. After nick kristof, our friend from the New York Times, shared his story with the world, it went viral and one of his chess teachers set up a gofundme page to raise money for his family. And as you can see, so far, it has raised more than 150,000. He even has some pop stars giving him money. I also happen to know his family will be moving out of the shelter story. That is an American Dream story. Still, it still exists. That wraps us this hour. Im stephanie ruhle. Ill see you again at 1 00 p. M. With ali velshi. Right now, more news with hallie jackson. Stephanie, thank you. Im hallie jackson. We start with breaking news. Documents just into our news room from the raid on Michael Cohen. What were learning and how it fits into the larger russia investigation. That is not the only thing popping this morning. Things are popping up. Were talking trump versus conway versus conway. Why the president is pushing a personal matter on to his very public twitter page, going after the spouse of one of his most loyal advisers. And in 2020 news, five democrats, six states, a whole lot of headlines. The ambitious new policies two of those candidates are pitching. Plus, why the one with the fewest
