To his critics. Hes calling for unity while criticizing the security at the synagogue. This is a place where they had an armed guard inside, they might have been able to stop him immediately. Certainly the results might have been far better. And all of this with just eight days to go. A week and one day away from the Midterm Elections today. A focus on getting out the vote, especially amongst suburban women. How many of you never were politically active before donald trump was elected president . Do you really think you can flip this district . We must begin this morning with what feels like a relentless stream of a tacks and threats. A deadly shooting at a Grocery Store in kentucky. A man arrested in florida for allegedly sending pipe bombs to prominent critics of the president. On saturday morning, a massacre at a synagogue in pennsylvania. Our team is here to take us through all of the angles of this story. But we have to start with how a quiet saturday morning in pittsburghs Squirrel Hill neighborhood turned into what is believed to be the deadliest antisemitic attack in u. S. History. At 9 54 a. M. , shortly after services began, a gunman walked into the tree of life synagogue and opened fire. Police arrived on the scene around 10 00 a. M. And immediately began exchanging gunfire with the suspect, 46yearold robert bowers. Hed earlier posted on social media, quote, screw the optics, im going in. By the time the suspect surrendered to police at 11 a. M. , 11 people were dead. He reportedly told police he wanted all jews to die. Among the victim, two others, a husband and a wife and a 97yearold grandmother and a quiet vibrant Jewish Community now left shattered from what pittsburgh mayors called the darkest day in the citys history. But also stories of courage and bravery and call also fs for st and resilience. It cant be used again in its present condition. The bullet holes are too numerous to count, but we will rebuild. Because were tree of life. Weve been here 154 years. You can cut off some branches. But the tree will continue to grow and we will be back. Nbcs miguel almagarr is outside the synagogue and matt bradley is outside the hospital where many of the victims were taken. Miguel, i want to go to you first, what is the latest in the investigation there . Robert bowers faces 11 counts of murder, including several counts of attempted murder and some hate crimes. We know hes supposed to be in federal court today. Hes in the hospital where hes recovering from hospital wounds after being engaged in a gun battle with police. The investigation here is just beginning though. Investigators have said about the motive that they believe this is a hate crime. They dont know if this was planned for months and weeks or if the suspect decided to snap and open fire at this. Thats part of the investigation. Investigators are also combing through his social media history. Trying to figure out who he was communicating they say they found a lot of hate speech on the website gab thats known as an open forum for white supremacists. Investigators are going through that information. Theyre trying to compile any Surveillance Video of the suspect, where he was in the hours leading up to the shooting, as well as the months before and who he may have had contact with, stephanie. All right, matt, give us the latest on the victims. Stephanie, im standing here in front of the hospital here where four of those victims were initially taken. You know, stephanie, this whole fluent is just aching for good news. Yesterday, officials said one of those police officers, of the two here at this hospital, would be released yesterday. As of today, we havent heard of that. Were hoping that he might come out in the next coming days. But those four victims, one of them is a 74yearold, and thats going to be very, very difficult for that recuperating. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the abdomen. So for a man of that age, its going to take a really long time. We spoke to the head of trauma there. He said thats the most complicated case of the four of them. But ive also been going around, stephanie, in talking to family and friends of these victims. The 11 people who died. And its really just such a poignant picture of a really tightknit religious community. One thing that really stood out among all 11 of them, most of them were elderly, was a commitment to public service. All of them in retirement felt the need to give back to their community and to really volunteer to go out and to try to, you know, bring people up, people who were downtrodden, including immigrants, including poor people in their community. But the other thing that really came out from all 1 is of those people who were killed was a deep and abiding faith in judaism and thats whats holding this Community Together now as this entire group sits shiva as a neighborhood. This shooting in pittsburgh, put this in perspective. It comes amid what the Antidefamation League says is a record rise antisemitic attacks across the country. Jonathan, saturday morning, when you first heard these reports, what went through your mind . I was in synagogue and i had my phone with me but im not looking at it of course and it was buzzing and buzzing. When i walked out of the synagogue, i opened it up and i couldnt believe what i read. I will tell you as the head of the adl, the thing that keeps me up at night has been the worry that i would wake up one morning and read about an incident in europe, in paris, belgium or sweden, where i would see a synagogue was attacked. I would ask myself had i done enough to protect those people . There are armed guards. There are men in uniforms with weapons in front of these synagogues and schools. I am used to a security cordon. I used to go to secret Service Every day to get into the west wing. The things ive seen there, you know, have left my made my heart sink. And here it was happening right here in this country at home at the kind of synagogue i was literally in myself. Take us there. Tem us about the Squirrel Hill neighborhood. Is this a place that it doesnt certainly sound like its a place that has a lot of conflict. Certainly not known for intolerance. Its a community. Are you kidding, right. Like this is a neighborhood. This is what you would call in yiddish a hamasha neighborhood. These people were grandparents and mothers and fathers. My phone and my email have been inundated over the last 48 hours with people telling me i was married there. I grew up there. I went to Hebrew School in that synagogue. Bar mitzvah in that very place. Literally a member of my Communications Team called me almost in tears saturday. So this hits home. And i think something thats important to note, you know. Racism isnt only the problem of black people, its all our problems. Homophobia isnt only the problem of gay people, its all our problem. Antisemitism only isnt an issue for the Jewish Community, it is everyones problem. We know from history the jews are the canary in the coal mine. Wheres this coming from . The adl has a statistic there has been a 57 spike in antisemitic incidents since 2017. Where is this coming from . I think there are a few things to keep in mind. I think number one antisemitism has always been with us. They call it the oldest hatred for a reason. Jews have been as a minority living in other societies. Jews have been targeted and persecute and victimized over the ages. So theres nothing new. There have been Antisemitic Attitudes in this country since it was founded. However but why now . Yes, why not, the most lethal and violent attack on our community in the history of the United States. Number one, i think the political environment absolut y ly contributes to it. We have people at the highest level of authority. We have a president who uses the phrase america first. A phrase developed by lindbergh in the 30s yes, but he could make the argument, jews are americans too, were all americans. But when you go on about conspiracy theorys that literally leap often the pages of white supremacist page books about George Sorros and when you talk about globalists and other phrases used by extremists. We have to acknowledge in the charged environment, theres a reason why david duke feels a license to operate. We watch our president talk badly about globalists, the media, International Banks and we know what thats code for. Why dont leaders today weve heard this, why dont leaders today stand up and say this isnt right . Its a sad state when antisemitisms almost becoming normalized. When we roll our eyes at the abnormal. Youve seen it infest and take hold in the political conversation. Weve been calling out canada trump and President Trump again and again. But i need to tell you Something Else as well. So this issues bigger than any one person, right. So the president has a role to play. He has the biggest megaphone. Make no mistake. People in all position, of authority and heres what i mean, that 57 increase which is very real, these are acts of harassment, vanidalism and violence. Almost a 90 increase of acts on colleges and universities. Antisemitism on campus and University President s are slow to call it out. We saw almost a doubling, a doubling of antisemitic abuse and bullying harassment at k through 12 schools. Literally 94 year on year. Too often principals and even parents roll their eyes and say kids will be kids. I would suggest that everybody has a responsibility, everybody has a position who has a position of influence, to interrupt antisemitism when it happens. Take it as deadly seriously as we saw what the deadly consequences can be this past weekend. Thank you so, so much. Please, i hope everyones listening to that. I want to turn now to florida and the aftermath of another crime. The man accused of sending 14 pipe bombs to prominent democrats and outspoken cite ki critics of President Trump. Nbcs kerry sand sers live in florida with the latest. What more are we learning about the suspect . The most important thing is they did get 14 of those bombs. None of them exploded. But the authorities are cautioning that doesnt mean there arent more bombs out there. Were learning from senior Law Enforcement officials that this suspect, cesar sayoc, is not in any way participating in interrogation or questioning. In fact, hes clammed up. So they dont know whether there are more bombs that may be out there in the mail stream. So theyre all eyes with the tension of the possibility of another bomb showing up. Meantime, he will have his first appearance before the magistrate. At that first appearance, were not sure whether it will be anything more than a first appearance and the process will begin to have him extradited to new york where he faces five federal charges, including making threats against former president s as well as sending explosives through the mail. Now, just a short time ago, i got off the phone with one of his attorneys, jamie benjamin. There were three attorneys who met with him over the weekend. Jamie benjamin, peter petsanyo and dan erickson. I understand from my conversation with attorney benjamin that they plan to challenge every piece of evidence presented by the federal government. That means theyre going to challenge the fingerprint which was taken off one of the envelopes sent to Maxine Waters that linked to a criminal database here in florida identifying the suspect as cesar sayoc. They say theyre going to challenge the dna evidence and ultimately theyre going to challenge what was how the authorities were able to find the van. That is a common piece of Police Technology that most people dont know exists. Its called a license plate reader. A piece of equipment sometimes on a car, sometimes just stationary. As cars go by it reads the license plates. Well, when they got the fingerprint and they were able to match it up to the criminal database in florida, then they were able to get the name of cesar sayoc and identify the vehicle, that white van, and then they had that license tag put into the license plate readers and start looking for it. When it alerted on friday in plantation, they knew exactly where that van just passed. Thats where the federal government agents and the s. W. A. T. Team moved in so quickly. They plan to challenge all that. Whether the suspect here is going to say anything in court, probably not likely. But we will be in the courtroom. Its a federal courtroom so no cameras allowed. Well be in there and report what he has to say and what the next steps are which likely will be extradition to new york. Joining me, former federal prosecutor and msnbc legal analyst glen kirshner. Theres nothing usual about the nature or number of charges brought against cesar sayoc. But i will suggest the procedural posture of the case is entirely usual. Because what happened was the prosecutors brought by criminal complaint the sort of five most readily provable offenses that they had based on the evidence that was sworn out by an fbi agent and what will happen now is i predict they will go into the grand jury, will begin presenting every witness and piece of evidence at light speed and return an indictment that will include at least these five counts and maybe more before the preliminary hearing which is normally held within ten days of arrest. That will allow the government to avoid doing an evidentiary hearing at the preliminary hearing. Instead, they will simply present the indictment, which by law establishes probable cause because the grand jury has voted it out and then the only question will be the continued detention of sayic. My goodness. All right, i want to turn back to pittsburgh. Theres a lot of talk about a site people arent familiar with, gab. This is a social media platform that bills itself the free speech alternative to other social media sites. We know that the gunman in pittsburgh post posted screw t optics, im going in. Before that, he posted multiple antisemitic comments before. Should investigators be monitoring things like this site . Or at this point is there so much out there we cant expect our government to have the resources to do that . There is that out there but its our responsibility, corporate americas responsibility and Law Enforcements responsibility. Im not criticizing Law Enforcement but when we see these kind of expressed threats on social media and, you know, it really echoes those stickers we saw on sayics van with target marks, rifle target marks around the faces of Hillary Clinton and barack obama. I maintain thats not protected First Amendment speech. But legally, what can we really do . Prosecutors are obligated to bring difficult cases. Test cases. I think we have to not be afraid of the First Amendment protections which we all love and embrace. We have to bring test cases like if somebodys riding around in a van with a rifle target over the face of a president ial candidate or a former president , i maintain as a prosecutor that could be charged as communicate ago threat. I would bring that case if i were still a prosecutor. Let the defense mount a First Amendment offense and let the judges sort it out. Because we live in dangerous, dangerous times. If we dont attack it, both on the corporate front and the Law Enforcement front, then were going to have more of this because we have not a commander in chief but an inciter in chief. Theres one more story that fits into this larger and devastating picture. On wednesday of last week, a gunman tried to enter a predominantly black church in jefferson town, kentucky, and those doors were locked. When he was unable to enter the church, the gunman drove to a nearby kroger Grocery Store and shot and killed two people, 69yearold maurice stallland and 67yearold vicky jones. Please look at this picture. Think about what has happened in the last week alone. Up next, days after calling for unity, President Trumps tweets blaming the Fake News Media for stoking anger. Were going to discuss what it will take to move this country forward and move it closer together. But first, a desperate search is under way for any survivors after a brandnew boeing 737 passenger plane calling 189 people on board crashed into the sea off the coast of indonesia. Investigators say there was no distress signal and the weather was good at the time. I cant believe it. That grandpas nose is performing flight of the bumblebee . No, you goof. I cant believe how easy it was to save hundreds of dollars on my Car Insurance with geico. Nice. I know, right . [nose plays a jazzy saxophone tune] believe it. Geico could save you 15 or more on Car Insurance. I felt i couldnt be at my best for my family. , in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured and left those doubts behind. I faced reminders of my hep c every day. But in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured. Even hanging with friends i worried about my hep c. But in only 8 weeks with mavyret, i was cured. Mavyret is the only 8week cure for all common types of hep c. Before starting mavyret your doctor will test if youve had hepatitis b which may flare up and cause serious liver problems during and after treatment. Tell your doctor if youve had hepatitis b, a liver or kidney transplant, other liver problems, hiv1, or other medical conditions, and all medicines you take including herbal supplements. Dont take mavyret with atazanavir or rifampin, or if youve had certain liver problems. Common side effects include headache and tiredness. With hep c behind me, i feel free. Fearless. And theres no looking back, because i am cured. Talk to your doctor about mavyret. Big corporations are making and just got a huge tax break. But the middle class is struggling. Prop c is a commonsense plan. The top 1 of businesses pay their fair share to tackle homelessness for all of us. Companies with revenue greater than 50 million pay, not Small Businesses or homeowners. The prop c plan is supported by the Democratic Party, teachers, and mentalhealth professionals. Vote yes on c. Big corporations pay for it, not you. This is the time to renew the bonds of love and loyalty that hold us all together as americans. These bonds have always sustained the nation in its hour of need. You know that. Everybody here knows that. And they are always more powerful than the forces of hatred and division, anger and eve. That of course was President Trump over the weekend calling for unity hours after the mass shooting at a pittsburgh synagogue. It was a theme he repeated multiple times that day. As part of that, he actually dialed back some of the inflammatory rhetoric his rallies have become known for. He also told reporters dont expect the change to be permanent. Id have a much different tone, frankly, if the press was even handed. If the press was fair, id have a much different tone all the time. But im fighting the media, im fighting that lack of honesty, so i have to have that tone. Otherwise ill never get my points across. Well never get what we have to get across. I can soft coat it anyway you want but thats the bottom line. He went a step further this morning, criticizing what he calls the inaccurate, even fraudulent reporting of the news. He tweeted that, quote, the Fake News Media, the true enemy of the people must stop the open and obvious hostility and report the news accurately and fairly. According to trump, that would help put out the flame of anger and outrage so he can bring all sides together in peace and harmony and i want to remind me, our audience, the president , lies to the American People every single day, over 5,000 times. The president is calling for unity. If the president is calling for fair and accurate reporting, then i would like to call upon the president for fair and accurate speech from our president. I want to bring my panel in. Robert costa, Washington Post and moderator of Washington Week on pbs. Tim obrien, Bloomberg Opinion and the author of trump nation, the art of being the donald. And rick tyler, cofounder of foundry strategies. You write, the president is equating the medias influence with his own. The president has unparalleled power being president of the United States. Yet he really is setting up the National News media as his foil at times more than even the Democratic Party. It makes for a charged political environment just days before the Midterm Election with the president in fighting mode even amid these National Tragedies and violence. Tim, some people are auki is this is not just politic, its a signal. Does he know what hes doing, when people say, oh, when he calls himself a nationalist, hes just talking about patrio tism. We know thats not the case. Dog whistles are silent. This is a fire alarm. Theres nothing quiet. Its not new. Trump has been engaging in this kind of activity for decades. This is a man who kept a volume of hitlers speeches in his night table what . I dont think people say this again. I dont think people either know it or forgot it. One more time. Trump kept a volume of hitlers speeches on his night stand in his triplex at trump tower. Ever explain why he did that . He said it was a gift and he never read it but it came up in his divorce with his wife. He never denied having the book, he just said he never read it. Who gave it to him . Thats a good question. I dont know. I cant remember who gave it to him. This is the same president who took out newspaper ads in the New York Times in the 1980s exploiting racial kdivisions during the central park jogger case. Harassing the alleged attackers even after they were proven innocent. They knew the value he could gain by putting himself in the midst of Racial Division and a racially heated event. What vow have now is in keeping with who he has been for decades. This isnt a strategy. This is who donald trump is. And america chose to elect him. Rick, wasnt to play what Vice President pens told our own vaughn hillyard. I just want to say, its shocking people can look at hitlers speeches but the idea he put them on his night stand and didnt read them is absurd. You wouldnt leave it on your night stand. I just think its implausible he didnt look at these i wa. Its sick and twisted. I want to share what the Vice President said. People on both sides of the aisle use Strong Language about our political differences but i just dont think you can connect it to threats or acts of violence, vaughn. I dont think the American People connect it. Thats really disappointing from Vice President pence. Come on, how many times you going to say that . Really disappointing . Hes been carrying President Trumps hes been supporting these lies for two years. People can say President Trump is not responsible for these and were not going to find him mailing pipe bombs or anything of the sort, right. On april 4th, 1968, Martin Luther king was assassinated. In a speech, his rhetoric prevented indianapolis from rioting whereas many other cities did. He was acknowledging the crowd to not reject Martin Luther king way of paelsful protest, and they listened to him. The point here is rhetoric from leaders is very important. And theres only one the way out of this is leadership. And its rejection of the idea that enemy of the people, nationalist. A president who declares himself a nationalist in the same week we have three horrific hate crimes is absurd. We should never and hes refusing to back down from it. Except except the hateful rhetoric is what elected him president. I want to share what he said over the weekend about toning down his rhetoric. And if you dont mind, im going to tone it down just a little bit. Is that okay . No . I had a feeling you might say that. Hes laughing, tim. Theyre booing. We can sit here with this call for peace and unity and togetherness and the president is laughing and his supporters are saying pump up the volume. They like it. So the hateful rhetoric has been a political win. This say business bafoon and outcast that became president of the United States based on promoting hate and divisions. Why would we think hes going to change . Hes not going to change. I think he revels in this. Its successful. Not not only because he traffics in division and racism but he also attached that to jobs and the economy. He said the reason youre hurting financially, the reason you have a job is the other, its china, its migrants, im going to protect you from the other and deliver jobs and economic growth. And his base Still Believes that. This is not the other issue here is donald trump is the result of failed institutions. Its a result of both parties, the media, establishment businesses. Not delivering to average americans after the financial crisis of 2008 and those portions havent gone away. People are not meant to live in isolation, theyre meant to live in a community. Most of us do. Thats right. Even the killer, the jewish synagogue, lived in a community. It was an alternative community. Alternative reality. Based on the idea were in a posttruth and the medias not to be believed. He created his own reality. He poisoned his mind to the point where he thought he was doing some sort of good by killing innocent people worshipping in a temple. The anecdote to that is leadership. Someone i didnt support was president bill clinton. After the Oklahoma City bombing, president clinton became president bauz ecause he embrac order correctly handled that moment. Because election and politics is actually all about, is a substitute for violence. Then democracy has no place. And we will fail. And this president is failing as a leader of a constitutional bob, doesnt this go beyond . Whether its bill clinton people voted for because they wanted a message of unity or trump because they wanted the division . But the rhetoric and Division Goes beyond trump. Most of this is beyond trump. President trump has a central role in this unfolding passion play thats going out across the country ahead of the Midterm Election with violence being the specter over all of it. At the same time, you have a Republican Party that is very much in the president s camp, backing him up rhetorically on his message. We saw that on the sunday shows. And the Democratic Party is just its moving toward the Midterm Elections. This is a deeply divided country. Theres not a lot of talk right now about bipartisan. Issues like gun control, the divide is so deep, congress is really not even considering moving on any of those fronts. The question for history is does president ial leadership really matter . Does President Trumps inability at times to really meet a bipartisan national moment, how does that challenge his own presidency and the country . All right, then bottom line it for me what do we do, tim . I think people have to vote. I think people have to be public about their values and their virtues and what they think america stands for. I think the Trump Presidency is a moment at the same moment its dividing people, its going to have to force people to stand up for the courage of their own convictions, including members of the Republican Party. I think moderate republicans, even conservative republicans who dont traffic in the same kind of racist dialogue as trump and some of his enablers do have to decide who theyre about and what their partys about. Do you think thats going to happen . When i look at the seems like moderate anything are hollowed out and fringes are winning. In a constitutional republican, you cannot exist where people are divided. The purely for compromise, which is why the two parties are supposed to get along in a congenial way great, then whos going to be the person to make that happen . The American People. Because the president that last week more than any other week in my mind declaring himself a nationalist in the same week we had this horrific Political Violence has failed the test of leadership. He should be punished for that. The only course correction is the American People going to vote in this 2018, 2020. But we must correct. We cannot have a person whos a selfdescribed and embraces the idea of being a nationalist. My goodness. Gentlemen, thank you. Were just days away from the midterms. Suburban women, theyre coming out in droves. What is the driving force behind their momentum . Mitzi Psoriatic Arthritis tries to get in my way . Watch me. mike ive tried lots of things for my joint pain. Now . Watch me. joni think id give up showing these guys how its done . Please. Real people with active Psoriatic Arthritis are changing the way they fight it. Theyre moving forward with cosentyx. Its a different kind of targeted biologic. Its proven to help people find less joint pain and clearer skin. Dont use if you are allergic to cosentyx. Before starting cosentyx you should be checked for tuberculosis. A new effort bringing some famous voices together for a new campaign set this week. I spoke to Christy Turlington about it. What is the number issue, why you want to vote, why this election matters . There are so many reasons but for me health care is at the top of the list. Immigration. My moms an immigrant. These things affect me personally. I cant stand watching and hearing stories and testimonies about peoples lack of access to health care, the fact that health care is so expensive, inexorbitant cost that is putting their families in debt. Theres a new group in carolina. Its about 70 women and theyre on an intense final push to get voters to the polls. On sunday, the group held a super event in charlotte where volunteers got to work calling, texting and writing post cards to voters. Chris jansing went down to waxhaw, north carolina. She joins me now. Tell me about what is going on there. President trump won with white suburban women voters. What has changed so much in the last year and a half about those women and talk about the effort down there. Yes, the shift has been incredible. If there is going to be a blue wave, stephanie, its going to come through places like this in suburban charlotte. We know suburban educated voters have been reliably republican for decades. In this district, district nine, north carolina, its been since 1962 that they have elected a democrat to congress. But Grassroots Efforts are changing that. You mention eed its one of i think close to 4,000 groups that have been created across the country since donald trump was elected. Theyre doing the grunt work of campaigns. Theyre knocking on doors. Theyre texting reminders. Theyre making phone calls. So i spent yesterday with a lot of these folks. Most of them had never been politically active in their lives. So i asked them, was there one thing, what was that that turned you into a political activist . Heres what they told me. I have granddaughters. I will not let them take away what i have fought for all my life. We women will take over. We will make this election about our rights and the rights of everyone. If you take away one persons right, you take away everyones right. After hurricane maria, my family spent almost a year without power, and all he could do was throw paper towels. Thats why im here. For me, it was definitely the separated of children from their parents that were trying to get into intolerance at the border right, it was just inhumane. It wasnt anything we as americans or as humans should stand for. It was it tugged at my heart strings. I didnt feel it was anything that should be happening in america in 2018. Stephanie, i thought one of the most telling things was when the founder of the group told me yesterday and were to talk to her live later today that someone from another campaign, a longtime political operative, literally dismissed her organizing activities as a bunch of, quote, silly girls. Well, this group now has 1,200 members and theyre on an incredibly intense push between now and election day to get their voters to the polls, stephanie. A bunch of silly girls. Silly girls. Silly, serious, whatever you want to label them as, every one of them has a right to group. Chris jansing, silly girls. That makes this girl sick to her stomach. It is sparking big debates among some of americas most powerful ceos. Twitter and square Ceo Jack Dorsey writing, were happy to pay our taxes. We just want to be treated fairly with respect to our peer companies, many of whom are two to ten times larger than us. Otherwise, we dont know how to practically grow in this city. Joining me now, rico editor at large cara swisher. Half a percent tax doesnt sound like much. What is jack dorsey saying he would pay way more than other ceos . Yes, its the way these revenues are figure d. Companies like square, hes not talking about twitter, but square, which is a Payments Company and stripe and others, which have been against this, would pay more percentagewise given how their revenue is figured. They want to not pay more than, say, sales force does. So thats its just a debate over how much taxes you pay pretty much, between these companies. So are they saying we would support prop c if it was adjusted so we wont be paying more than, lets say, bennyoff or theyre simply saying no, dont raise taxes . I think its the former. But i think the issue is what responsibility tech has for the massive homeless issue in San Francisco which is i dont know if youve been there but its really out of control and really depressing and sad and tragic given how much well tl wealth there is in the companies largely from tech which have come in, jacked up housing prices. You know, people want to live in the city, and so its a real problem around house, around what to do about this, how much money we should pay for this. And so it becomes a big issue. So i think the question is whos responsible for it and who should pay for it and thats really where we are. Well, seems somewhat absurd is how much these companies are spending sort of on publicity right now to push this thing one way or another. Imagine if they spend it just helping the homeless. I want to share what mark bennyoff of sales force said. He says when it comes to this proposition c, its the same two buckets. Either for the homeless or for yourself. Thats a bold statement but is it fair . Well, you know, i think you you know mark, he likes to put things in those stark terms because hes trying to sell something which is we should pass proposition c. Initially he was against it. He wrote a story and changed his mind after studying it a bit. I think i issue, and hes right, were at a stage weve got to do something about it. Whats interesting here is the mayor is not for proposition c because shes a new mayor and the accountability of the spending is worrisome to her of where it goes and what to do about it. Since theres no easy solution especially in a city like San Francisco thats not going to throw the homeless out, which other cities do. Its a big question of how you spend this money. How much money to spend it on be. If you should focus on drug addiction issues. Its so complicated in how the money should be spent. If not voting for prop c, those ceos, are they acknowledging some responsibility. Have they offered an alternate solution. When i think about the explosion of wealth in the Tech Community and how its changed San Francisco, i got to think they had some responsibility here, no. Absolutely. Certain people dont want buildings done. Its low density. Theres opposition to building with more density. Its not just a problem for the homeless. Its a problem for working people, firemen, things like that into keeping the city. Its bif they have these beautiful cafeteria. The street life had changed dramatically in a short amount of time. Its everywhere in the city. It didnt use to have so much problem. You cant walk through the streets without seeing it. I think the issue is how do you create a civil city thats enjoyable to live in at the same time and kind to its lowest citizens and most abject citizens. At the same time get Tech Companies that have benefitted from being in San Francisco to pay their fair share. I think they have a Civic Responsibility 100 . Theyve got to think harder about solutions than fighting these things. Were asking our political leaders to come together. Maybe we could ask the tech ceos who know each other, who socialize with one another come together with this thing. Thank you. Up next, were talk about the neck and neck senate race in the state of arizona and how agriculture will play a crucial role in this race. Giggling panting gotcha man ah girl nooooooooooooo man nooooo girl nooooo. vo quick, the quicker picker upper bounty picks up messes quicker, and is two times more absorbent than the leading ordinary brand. man and pirate girl ahoy laughing vo bounty, the quicker picker upper. Comfort. What we deliver by delivering. In the movies, a lot of times, i tend to play the tough guy. But i wasnt tough enough to quit on my own. Not until i tried chantix. Chantix, along with support, helps you quit smoking. It reduced my urge to smoke to the point that i could stop. When you try to quit smoking, with or without chantix, you may have nicotine withdrawal symptoms. Some people had changes in behavior or thinking, aggression, hostility, agitation, depressed mood, or suicidal thoughts or actions with chantix. Serious side effects may include seizures, new or worse heart or blood vessel problems, sleepwalking or allergic and skin reactions which can be lifethreatening. Stop chantix and get help right away if you have any of these. Tell your Healthcare Provider if youve had depression or other Mental Health problems. Decrease alcohol use while taking chantix. Use caution when driving or operating machinery. The most common side effect is nausea. My favorite role so far . Being a nonsmoker. No question about it. Talk to your doctor about chantix. Just eight days to go. Were talking balance of power in the senate and trade. Today its all about cotton. A surprisingly big deal in the state of arizona. In fact, the crop worth 34 million bucks last year, its not only a key part of arizonas agriculture but its also an important topic in the states super tight senate race. Why is cotton such a big deal in this midterm . Reporter its a big deal because if you come out here, you have a major operation. Almost 1 billion in cotton was exported from the u. S. Alone last year. Thats the second largest crop to soybeans here. Yesterday we went out on the farm here. It was a 3300 acre operation with dennis palmer. Hes a fourth generation cotton grower. This is his cotton right here. This is the stuff that gets sent oversae overseas, comes back many the form of levis that you wear. The conversation was will trump be able to hold onto his base during this trade war with china . Dennis palmer gave us his take. I heard him say that farmers are patriots and we are. Why are you a patriot . What makes you a patriot . We love this country. Ive never served in the military but we support our leaders. Youre willing to bear the brunt in order for the long term good . I guess we really are. Reporter stephanie, as you heard from dennis there, hes standing by the president but also hes going to be voting for Martha Mcsally in this contested Arizona Senate race. Were at the cotten gin where its about to get going. Its going to go in here to the gin and thats where the sticks and seeds are separated from the cotton prepared to go overseas. Dennis said before the tariffs went into place they were getting about 90 cents per pound. Right now, its down to about 78 cents. As you heard him say, he will stand by the Republican Party and donald trump as the trade war goes on and on tuesday, republican Martha Mcsally will be getting his vote. Stephanie. All right. Its all about cotton in the state of arizona. Thank you so much. You know how we like to end this show. Today we especially need it. No matter whats theres always good news somewhere and we believe good news ruhles. Here a simple act can mean so much. A mother in florida alabama was trying to hold a sleeping baby and fill out paper work when a man, a stranger in the waiting room offered to hold the baby while she completed her form. See that right there. An act of kindness for a stranger. Compassion, neighborly love calling. That changed her day. Maybe changed her outlook. That wraps up this hour. More news with my friend hallie jackson. I think everybody could use good news on this monday morning. Its a heavy hearted one after a weekend filled with violence, murder and hate.
