More. What is and isnt in the deal. Its the largest trade deal the United States has everknee gosh negotiated. We have two wonderful partners. Breaking news, amazon announces it is raising its minimum wage to 15 an hour for all of its 350,000 workers. The fbi racing to finish the investigation into Brett Kavanaughs background. But the president and Republican Leaders say they only have a few days left to get this thing done. Well, ive got a great team here to break it down. First, let me explain specifically where things stand. The white house has given the fbi the official green light to expand its Background Investigation into judge kavanaugh. But they are running out of time to get it done. The president says he wants it done in a week and republican leader Mitch Mcconnell says he wants to vote on the judge by friday. Nbc news had learned that the feds were initially told to stick to just four people, mark judge, p. J. Smyth. And Deborah Ramirez. All allegedly at the party. Ram ra ramirez alleges a second incident of misconduct. We have learned that judge, smyth, koois irand ramirez have been interviewed by the fbi at least once. Judges Attorney Says his clients interview has not been completed. The president said the fbi should talk to whomever they want. What i said is let the senate decide. Whatever they want to do is okay with me. And also the fbi. I think the fbi should do what they have to do to get to the answer. I dont know all three of the accusers. Certainly i imagine theyre going to interview two. The third one, i dont know much about, but it wouldnt bother me at all. Now that third accuser is Julie Swetnik. She has alleged that he attended parties where rapes took place, an allegation that kavanaugh has denied. Senate democrats have drawn up a list of more than 2 dozen people they want contacted. New york times says Deborah Ramirez has given the fbi more than 20 names and we know the fbi has already spoken to people like a former classmate who challenged kavanaughs accounts of how much he drank. In fact, Top Democrats are now focusing on the issue of whether kavanaugh was truthful in his Senate Testimony as a potential reason to stop his confirmation. The 64,000 question is this, is judge kavanaugh credible . Will judge kavanaugh say anything . Deny anything . Mislead about anything . To secure confirmation to the Supreme Court . Thats probably worth more than 64 grand. One possible example that comes from kavanaughs interview with the Senate Judiciary committee about ramirezs allegations that he exposed himself in college. The judge was asked specifically whether he had ever discussed or heard discussion about the alleged incident before the new yorker published its article on september 23rd. Kavanaugh said, and i quote, no. Text messages obtained by nbc news showed that judge kavanaugh was texting with friends to try to refute ramirezs claims well before the article came out. In fact, one former classmate told the fbi kavanaughs team started reaching out in july, two months before the new yorker published ramirezs claims. On monday, Senate Majority leader Mitch Mcconnell said democrats questioning kavanaughs process and says it wont work. The time for endless delay and obstruction has come to a close. Judge kavanaughs nominations out of committee. Considering here on the floor. And mr. President , well be voting this week. I want to bring in msnbcs Garrett Haake on the hill. Okay, garrett, is Mitch Mcconnell sticking to it was last friday they said they would do a oneweek investigation and this fridays the deadline . I mean, this thing might not be done. Yes, hes saying this week. So were not clear if thats a senate week, which usually ends on thursday. If its friday, which most of us think. Or if the senate could conceivably be here through the weekend to get this nomination done this week. Nbc will dock my pay if i try to explain cloture right now. But the basic gist is there will be two votes on kavanaugh and mcconnell could try to do the first vote before the fbi investigation is done and start the clock on the final vote. Unless and until the senators flake, murkowski and collins are satisfied with what the fbi has produced, mcconnell doesnt have the votes to get kavanaugh confirmed. Were all waiting to see that fbi report. Theres this question of political gamesmanship or brinksmanship on the typing of the vote to qualify. Mcconnell wanted to see kavanaugh on the bench yesterday. He wants to get this done as soon as humanly possible. No doubt, i want to bring in Peter Alexander at the white house. You were the man yesterday who questioned the president about expanding this investigation. He seemed very open to it. But last night in tennessee, i dont know, i kind of felt like he was singing a different tune. I think thats important to note. The bottom line, when hes speaking to his base at that rally in tennessee, the president again defended kavanaugh fiercely. He accused democrats of really trying to attack this good man, as he described it. Trying to burn the future down, to use the president s language. Has been a real frustration for trump. Hes not in the drivers seat. He doesnt control this process, absent giving the fbi the rein it wants to pursue this investigation. Its being driven by the senate. By those critical republican senators who those votes, the white house and kavanaugh needs for this to pass. Those are senators that dont really have the Close Relationships with this white house. The president , as much as he wants to push ahead and say lets get this done, doesnt want to do anything to offend them because he needs those votes for this thing to go forward. One of the things that struck me when we heard from the president yesterday, said hes keeping an open mind, but when you heard it last night, it appeared to be a different take, take a listen. No, the fbi, they should take by the way, if we took ten years, theyd want more time. But they want to take a lot longer. Lets see how it all workins ou but ill tell you what, theyre trying to destroy a very fine person and we cant let it happen. Of course, the longer this goes, more americans keep souring on this nomination of Brett Kavanaugh. Stephanie, just to pull back the curtain a little bit, one thing that has struck me at the white house and the conversations ive been having with sources that are close to kavanaugh, close to the president , they have been increasingly interested in hearing any last detail we may have. They feel like spectators here too. Trying to find out any more details that are about to be reported out. So far they feel like they have dodged any bullets. They feel strongly about the case on behalf of Brett Kavanaugh. But there are still a real anxiety that there could be Something Else that undercuts their effort to get him confirmed. There could be, but from the white houses perspective, no one is talking about robert mueller, not for the past week, and so that is a win for President Trump. I want to bring think about what i just said, that is a win. Were only going after his Supreme Court nominee. My panel, its one of my faves. Midwin charles, an attorney from the law firm midwin charles. Eddie glaud, a princeton professor. Elise, who served as an aide in the bush administration. Whats your take on where we are . President trump held that press conference that got a lot of support yesterday. He said lets open this thing up as long as you get it done by friday. President trump was saying the right things at his press conference. Then he goes to his rally in tennessee and its like a flip switches and he becomes the rally donald trump. He becomes the insult comedian donald trump. And hes just talking about this in a way that if youre one of kavanaughs closest associates, you dont want that rally last night in tennessee. Switching the focus from Sexual Misconduct to perjury, and if they are, the perjury issue is Brett Kavanaughs own fault. I think what the democrats are doing is focusing on what they ought to be focusing on. Does this man have the fitness to serve on the Supreme Court . It looks like are there allegations of Sexual Assault . What does that look like . Is there perjury . A variety of different things. I think thats what the democrats are doing. What theyre doing is ensuring that were looking at this from various different perspectives. This is a job interview. This is a job interview. Which means you have to look at a whole host of things as to whether or not this man has the character, the fitness and the temperament. Which i think is an issue that hadnt even been on the table until kavanaugh testified. I cant i mean, ive been practicing for 18 years. I know, i dont look it. But the idea that a federal judge would behave that way. If i did that, if any attorney did that in federal court, we would be hauled out by the court officer. Temperament is now a matter that is on the table for us to decide whether or not this judge has the right temperament to sit on the highest court of the land and listen to appeals from every day americans. I mean, it is a great point because the president just yesterday said youre only going after how he may or may not have behaved 30plus years ago. Thats not the case. Everythings on the table. About two or three days ago. Eddie, Chuck Schumer said they thought they would be done with this investigation, maybe a week, maybe its going to take more time. I want to share what mcconnell said about that. But mr. President , id bet almost anything that after it runs its course in the next few days, we will then be treated to a lecture. A lecture. That anything short of a totally unbounded fishing expedition of indefinite duration is too limited or too arbitrary or somehow insufficient. We all know thats coming. You can practically hear the sounds of the democrats moving the goal post. Is that fair . No. Its actually its actually an indication of how brazen senator mcconnells hypocrisy actually is. Behind him should be a sign, like on snl, instead of Merrick Garlands face should show up, right . Was that not being the most extraordinary troll ever . Thats what should happen. The kind of moral highground should have had Merrick Garland instead of alyssa milano. That would have been amazing. The way hes trying to think about the nomination. The way hes trying to frame the democrats possible complaint about an investigation that has in some ways been limited is all in some ways part and parcel of what has happened to this process. The process has been broken from the beginning. Were diminishing another institution. The high court. And Mitch Mcconnell is playing a central role in this. I think its very important for us. Let me pan out. Because life is happening. My heart and prayers are going out to people in indonesia. Just thinking about those children under the cover of darkness who are being moved to the border who still are 13,000 kids. We still have life going on and other things are happening. We see the diminishment of our institutions. Mitch mcconnell is at the center of it. When senator flake said what he said in the judiciary committee, the first thing that came to mind, none of this matters. It all depends on what mcconnell wants. Mcconnell wants more than anything judge kavanaugh to be it does matter because theyre hungry for a moment though. Like what happened with chris coons, jeff flake and senator amy klobuchar. Americans want to see compromise. They want to see senators on both sides coming together to look at the facts, and then you see what Political Leadership does to absolutely try to screw it up. Americans want to live better lives more than they care about politics. I got to ask about julie and her allegations because theyre massive. This woman alleges that kavanaugh was at a party where women were gang raped. I mean, that is a term, thats an allegation that you cannot walk away from. Nbc news has not been able to independently corroborate any of these claims and when we asked her Attorney Michael Avenatti for any witnesses, any witnesses, who could back up her account, he provided four names of friends swetnik says went to parties with her. One of them says he does not recall anyone named julie swt swetnik. So how should we treat this allegation . This is one that kavanaugh will have to live with forever. It was a sworn affidavit. But i also watched her interview last night and to say someone was present during a gang rape and then what we heard last night, that was different. To say that they spiked punch . And now its theyre standing near punch. How do you get to the bottom of Something Like this . These are serious allegations that if kavanaugh was involved with them have to be taken seriously, but what if there are many holes and this is now out there for all the world to see . But i think youve answered your question. The idea that there are so many holes in what she claims to have happened is what we do. This is what juries do every day. This is what judges do every day to determine the credibility of someone. What you do is you look to see, a, is there corroborating evidence. Is there an additional eyewitness . And if not, you start to poke holes in what that person is saying. Then you come to the likelihood, the conclusion, that perhaps theyre not telling the truth. Why . Because they lack credibility. And when you look at the kavanaugh hearings and you look at dr. Fords testimony and you juxtapose it or you compare it to kavanaughs testimony, thats exactly what we have to do. So he said she said is not this idea that well never be able to know what happened. What we do as everyday citizens is we look to see whether or not the person is answering the question clearly. Are they misdirecting you . Do they make sense when they answer . Are they angry . We do that all the time to determine the veracity of the statements that people make. I think you were doing it just now as you talked about swetnik. If she has given four witnesses and none of them can corroborate what she said i mean, her lawyer is putting forth people who arent credible i think its dangerous for Michael Avenatti to not be 100 accurate with representing or making these statements. Because as an attorney, you have ethical obligations of which you must abide. You have to tell the truth. And if you have a client who is going to go out there and make those statements as an attorney, you have to believe that they are the truth. So he ought to be very, very careful here. Hes treading a little bit on thin ice. At least with respect to these allegations. Dangerous for whom . We talked a lot about that this confirmation is more than just about the Supreme Court and Brett Kavanaugh. It is about hyper partisanship. Its about how we raise our boys, how we raise our girls and the me too movement. How do we address these situati situations where, now more than ever, we understand the importance for women to be able to come out, speak their truth, be protected. But at the same time, once toothpaste is out of the tube, if there are claims, and we dont know yet but we have not been able to corroborate any of them. If they cant be, then what . Huge damage gets done. Absolutely. The first thing we have to do is take the claim serious. What we mean by believe women, what we mean by that, at least what i mean by that, or how i interpret that phrase, is to take the claim seriously. Is to listen. What does it mean to take Julie Swetnik seriously . You have to investigate the claim. If it turns out shes not telling the truth, then she has to be held accountable. In every way. But you take the claim seriously. You dont read it through partisan lenses if shes just some democratic plant in order to torpedo kavanaughs nomination. You dont read it as just simply some woman who wants the limelight. You take the claim seriously. Instead of us doing that, right, we want to question the character of the person coming forward. We want to question the motivation before we actually understand all of the particulars, right. And it seems to me if were going to learn a lesson from this moment, right, if were going to learn a lesson from this moment, particularly for all the young Vulnerable People out there, women and men out there who are vulnerable, the first thing we have to learn is we just simply have to take the claim seriously. We have to show decency. These are serious issues. Thank you, all. Important conversation. Were going to leave it there. When we come back, President Trump hit the campaign trail last night to take a big victory lap over his new trade deal. Ohio republican Governor John Kasich is here with his thoughts on the usmca. Its going to produce jobs and companies arent going to be leaving and firing everybody and making product and sending it back to the United States. Its fair, its modern and its balanced. President trump touting the new nafta, the usmca. The trade deal came together after weeks of High Pressure negotiations. Well, this is not really an out with the old, in with the new trade deal. For instance, the name trump was adamant about, the rebranding of the new trade deal from nafta. Then theres dairy. In a concession to trump, canada will give u. S. Dairy farmers better access to about 3. 5 of the countrys 16 billion dairy market. As a result of that concession, the president assured canada and mexico that he would not hammer them with automobile tariffs. Which brings us to big changes in the auto industry. In an effort to have more cars manufactured in north america, to qualify for zero tariffs, a vehicle must have 75 of its components manufactured in north america, up from the current 62. 5 . And in 2020, at least 30 of the work on zero tariff cars must be performed by employees making at least 16 bucks an hour. I have to note, tariffs on aluminum and steal from the u. S. And retaliatory tariffs from canada are still in place, despite these negotiations. Well, youre in luck because one of my faves, republican Governor John Kasich of ohio, is here with me to discuss all of this and more. Governor, i want to talk about the people of ohio and the country. But i do want to talk about Brett Kavanaugh for just a moment. What is your thought on how all this is playing out . We can go back and forth. Everybody holds such a strong opinion. Everybody in the country. But the lesson is were operating in a zero sum game. In other words, its like flipping the coin. I flip a coin, its heads, i win and you lose, or you flip the coin and you get heads you win, heads i lose. But the world doesnt work that way. But thats whats happening with this. Thats exactly right. Because were in a zero sum game, every tactic is okay. You can do whatever it takes just so i can win and i can defeat you. That is a toxic environment. And then take our tongues which as somebody once said more powerful than the rudder on a big ship. We use our tongue as a weapon. Because every tactic is okay. We can say whatever we want. Either facetoface or better now i can do it on social media so i dont have to see you and were tearing the country apart. And we have to get over this. Its up to all of us. You know how you were last weekend, you were with somebody and you wanted to yell at them because you thought they were so wrong in their opinion . If you just didnt do it and you said, ive got to show them a little space, you would have had a better night. We all do this. I argue with people all the time. I need to control my tongue better. Im with you but how do we get back from there . Because President Trump the Republican Party has become the party of trump. Right . Look at his press conference yesterday. He gets up there and goes tick, tick, tick, deregulation, tough on immigration, trade, the judges. I did it, i did it, i did it. Bang, bang, bang. And he doesnt know what the zero tolerance policy i met with a couple legislators in ohio last week to kind of share my 30 years of how to do things in politics. And one of them said, you know, i qgo out door to door and peope slam the door in my face when they say, you know, im a republican. Then i figured it out. I said i work with john kasich. Im a republican. She said now theyll listen to me. She said why is that . I said, well, because i want to be kind in this job. It doesnt mean im weak. I want to be able to give space to other people. And so, stephanie, my message to them is stand up yourselves. You have to stand up. Dont wait for somebody else or your leadership. So its going to take individual republicans and democrats. And we saw some of it in the Senate Judiciary committee. But its across the board. Its infecting all of us too. How many i know you. How many arguments have you had where your had to turn around and apologize to one of your friends or your spouse . I have to. We have to knock it off. The one great thing about these heightened times we are in, suddenly everybodys engaged. Suddenly people across the country yes, but we cant be engaged in a way where we say, okay, i win, and my argument is right and youre crazy. And you lose. If we do that, it just drives the politicians into a okay, well, i dont have Mitch Mcconnells home number. You do. Your might want to speed dial him. President trump railed against nafta. Now hes rebranded it, given it some slight tweaks and hes saying its a grand win. Whats your take . Well, for those people who thought nafta was so horrible and all the jobs i voted for nafta. It is on the whole it was a great result. For those who said, oh, it was horrible, we have a new trade deal, theres not much difference here. Yes, some mexican workers will make more. Thats a good thing. This domestic content, we dont know how that will work. It is possible, stephanie that somebody will want to produce some of what theyre making in north america in europe. Because they cant meet all the standards. Look, im just saying to you theres some good parts to it. Overall, its not really a big change. But at least its done. Heres the question. At what cost you think what do you think trudeau thinks about donald trump . Trudeau does not feel good about it. And donald trump did his calculation, he probably said, theyre canadian. If we want to rally the world against the illegitimate practices of china, you dont do it by angering somebody or putting them in a corner or calling them a name or whatever. But thats what trump does and he won on that. Well, did he win long term . Does america win long term on this . I mean, in the short term, you know, its a little sugar. Look, im glad they got this done. But theres no dramatic, completely dramatic things in here that we would go, oh, my goodness, we just have saved all of this. I am with you. If there is such a thing, isnt this an example of the genius of trump . Max boot put it out there where he said President Trumps specialty is to create a crisis and then claim credit for solving it. So to President Trumps base where he said tear nafta up, its the worst thing. He tore it up in name. What the actual document is, a globalist sort of happy medium. Politics is about people. And when you embarrass somebody or you infuriate somebody else, its hard to get them to come back and to work with you on a bigger issue. Canada and mexico, you know, we probably could have had this done without all this, you know, all this recriminations and angst and everything. We want people who think like we do, the rule of law, free trade, all this stuff. We want them to be our friends i would believe that if if i hadnt seen the president call lindsey graham, Mitch Mcconnell and paul ryan pathetic, and then fall at the knees and praise you, mighty god president. Not literally, yes. Long term, long term, you are damaging relationships. Its not complicated. That doesnt mean we dont need to fight. What we really need is we need a better trade agreement with europe. Which we could have had, had we not gone through all these tariffs right now were seeing in all this disruption. We are friends to get together and tell the chinese you better knock off what youre doing. Youre blocking our ability to trade with you. Now were kind of splintered. Well get merkel. What do you think merkel thinks about donald trump . I mean, this is not a useful thing. We would all live in a better world if long term was the type of environment we lived in. Ceos today cant do that because theyve got activist investors and shareholders knocking down the door in our personal lives, social media is beating us, and the same thing in politics. No one votes long term. Stephanie, look, life is short. Were here for a short time. And were gone. What do we want our legacy to be . That we sacrifice all of our values and value system for more profit . I mean, come on. Im with you. What im saying is ceos who are enlightened are able to both do good things at the same time that they are successful in business. Theyre not mutually exclusive. When they become mutually exclusive, thats when companies are not at their best and sometimes they are morally bankrupt. Is there an example of voters today who give politicians that kind of longterm leeway . Its 35 days away from midterms and people are votinging to have a better life and money in their pocket today. A lot of them are voting because theyre angry, okay. Were back again to the zero sum game. You look at a trump rally. I mean, come on, folks. You dont teach your kids to be that way. So when the public itself says i win, you lose, ive got friends that were in a barber shop last week. If you would have heard the things they were saying about dr. Ford. Whether you believe her or not. The things they were saying. It was horrible, okay. Where does this come from . When we say blame the politicians, we have to look at ourselves too and say we can be better. So, you know, i made a new years resolution which i have failed. That was, this year in 2018, i wasnt going to win every argument. I could lose a couple, okay. You know what, my life is better when i can let somebody else have a little bit by the way one last thing i want to say to you, these children being transported in the dead of night to these Detention Centers could you imagine when you were a little girl or i was a little boy that they said were going to rip you away from your mother and father and were going to send you on a bus. You talk about the longterm implications of the little brains of these young little kids. Sleeping on the floors and not going to school and frankly, stephanie, nobody loving them. What we got to this has got to stop. Breaks my heart to think about it. When you think about voters, voters in your state, do they think about things like what were doing to these immigration children . Or do they just vote and say ive got a job and money in their pocket . I think we can dig down with them because the people are good, stephanie. People do want to love our children. They want to be connected to one another. We just sometimes live way out here. But, you know, this morning, this nun, who was on morning joe sister norma, one of the most extraordinary people. Theres a lot of nuns doing a lot of great things. We have to do what we can do. We have to stop waiting on what the committee is going to do or the president. Why dont we do some things . How about that uplifting story about that little girl named flo . She heard about hurricane florence. She said to her mother, mom, weve got to do something. Shes 5 years old. We have to do something to help these people. Her father took a picture, of o flo and put it where the storm was moving on a little map and they attached it to a wagon. Her little brother pulled flo in the wagon and they went door to door in the neighborhood. They have raised so many supplies for people in north carolina. They have a garage full. And i called this mom and this little girl the other day. We need more flos. I said, flo, can you believe what you did . You know what she did, i got a lot of attention. 5 years old. I love that story. Its agreat story. Good news ruehls was brought to you by Governor John Kasich from the great state of ohio. Governor, thank you so much. Always great to be with you. Up next, a big part of the new trade deal includes greater access to canada for u. S. Dairy farmers. Were going live to the largest conference of Dairy Farmers in the world for their reaction. There goes our first big order. 44, 45, 46. How many of these did they order . Ooh, thats hot. You know, we could sell these. Nah. We dont bake. Opportunity. What we deliver by delivering. One look at you and i cant disguise ive got hungry eyes applebees new 3course meal starting at 11. 99. Now thats eatin good in the neighborhood. President trump says tough trade talk will finally begin to pay off for americans, specifically dairy farmer. Under nafta, there were restrictions on how much milk, cheese and other Dairy Products were allowed into canada from the United States. Under the new deal, the usmca, canada will set new quotas, allowing better access to their dairy industry. Nbcs Vaughn Hillyard joins me live from the world dairy expose in madison, wisconsin. Vaughn, walk me through this. Are Dairy Farmers like shooting milk all over the place, champagnestyle . The world dairy expo is a good place to have that happen. I want to bring in steve. Hes actually from california. Stephanie was asking is everybody squirting milk all over the place in celebration . Because the president made this the central component of his nafta renegotiation efforts. Are you celebrating . Obviously we have to celebrate it. We appreciate the president keeping us front and center on these trade negotiations. Trying to get some fairness into the expose market. And he appreciates the hard work that all dairy men do taking care of the animals and the land and providing a nutritious product. Youre third generation, your son is fourth generation. Theres about 40,000 dairy farms still in operation. How big of a deal, how much of an impact will this have on the future of dairy in the United States . Its going to be a huge impact, allowing the markets to work, fairness. But dairy puts 2. 5 times more influence into the economy of the local rural economies and local communities. And so its huge for the for keeping the health of america. The president says, you know, now 3. 6 of the Canadian Marketplace will include u. S. Dairy. How much of an impact . What does that mean for your operation . Well, that allows us to move our products of dairy into their needs and access to their market. We give them access to ours already. So really its a nontariff thing and its going to be beneficial. Steve and i were talking that dairy was actually named part of this deal. Weve been over this country over the last several months. There were a lot of industries that were not addressed. Those include Fresh Potatoes and trying to expand their markets into mexico or pork production. The other second component is remembering that there are retaliatory tariffs still in place. With mexico, most of those cheeses from the United States, 20 tariffs that are still having an impact on the price of the likes of steves milk out of california, stephanie. All right, vaughn, steve, thank you. I want to bring in ben white, hes the chief economic correspondent for politico and cnbc contributor and eddie and elise back with me. What does all of this do, now that we have this threeparty alliance in place with the United States, canada, mexico, against china . Well, not very much i dont think. I mean, if we had agreed to the tpp as you and i have talked about in the past, the transpacific partnership, a couple of years ago when trump came in, we would have a much larger coalition of the willing to pressure china on its trade practices. Now we basically have taken tpp, most of the provisions in there, and put it in this new nafta, which isnt very different from the old nafta. Great, we got it, thats good. Its just u. S. , mexico and china. We could have had u. S. Mexico and canada, plus japan and a whole bunch of other pacific rim nations to pressure china. We dont have that now. We dont have nafta collapsing. We didnt accomplish a great deal. The dairy increase that you were just talking about is pretty minuscule. And the opportunity costs of all of the uncertainty weve had over the last year and a half of nafta going away. I dont know if id be popping the champagne corks or popping the milk bottles here. Elise, ben is right, much of the language thats in there was in tpp. President obama sort of set the stage for this. But he didnt get it through the hoop. He didnt get it done. And President Trump, love him or hate him, is a branding thats his jam. So hes got this thing renamed. He says to his base, i tore it up. But he actually creates a freer trade document. That much of the work had already been done. But hes going to hang his hat on this as a win. Is it a win . Are we surprised at all that he basically just did copy, paste and added in the language basically we know its copy and paste. The majority of americans exactly, its a marketing win. The classic donald trump political message. He is so much so much of a salesman and showman that it doesnt matter what the substance is. Look at north korea. Look at how hes doubting north korea as giving all these concessions when not really sure how thats happening. But its all about branding with donald trump. Were seeing that with this trade deal. Im just glad it does seem to hopefully end a little bit of uncertainty. He may be overexaggerating what hes done or the accomplishment. Is it something that democrats should vote against . Because it actually is an improved nafta. Look, some of us have had concerns about nafta from the beginning. But what we see here, particularly with 15 for workers, b pproducing cars. Think about opening 3 of the Canadian Market for u. S. Dairy farmers. It actually is doing some work. But its not what trump says it is. I think we still have the issue around soybeans and farmers and those areas and how theyre struggling. We know that hes having to float them money in order to keep them afloat because of the tariffs. I dont think in other words, i dont think democrats should make of this political hay. Make of this a political issue. Its going to have an impact. But its not what trump says it is. Ben, was yesterday a win for those not in President Trumps base but those who support, who make the argument to you and i regularly, stop listening to his rhetoric, dont Pay Attention to it, dont listen to his tweet, just look at his policies, the tax cuts, the strong economy, what his tough talk on trade, thats serving people. Does yesterday fall right into that basket for those people . Basically does. Yes. You can discount all of the rhetoric on the campaign trail about how nafta was the worst deal ever and hes going to dump it and put something you know big, beautiful, better in place. He hasnt done that, he didnt do that. Actually read nafta. Well, true. Hell say, heres a new thing. Yes. The rhetoric aside, i will say it is not true hes doing a lot of stuff on trade that is damaging and potentially damaging. When you look at the tariffs, the u. S. Soybean farmer and others trying to sell into china and cant do it now because of the tariffs. Those could go up another 200 billion and 25 on aefrg we imported. Thats going to hit consumers. There is actually stuff being done by President Trump that is damaging to the u. S. Economy and this great achievement, it didnt blow up nafta. A trade deal thats generally worked for america, canada and mexico over the years since nafta went into place. His actions dont match the rhetoric but his actions are, in fact, in many areas of trade, hurting the u. S. Economy. Could be stronger than what it actually is. Can we speak to the absurdity of that . He went after nafta and went after canada and mexico and is now running a victory lap saying its all okay, kids. Nafta was never a disaster. Nor was our relationship with them. Well, and this gave him a victory lap last night at a rally in tennessee where he needed to calm tennesseans when it comes to trade. Its a big Campaign Issue in the Tennessee Senate race. Its a big Campaign Issue in the Mississippi Senate race. Donald trump has been unnerving some of his strongest supporters who really are dependent on agriculture for their livelih d livelihoods. Hes the p. T. Barnum of american politics. But people went to the circus and last night he could tick down deregulation, tough on immigration, trade, the economy, and getting those judges in place. While it may be a circus and when you look under the hood, when you say tough on immigration, do you know whats happening to Migrant Children . When he just goes with that top line, it sounds pretty good at a rally. We go to the circus and we dont Pay Attention to the cruelty that happens to the animals. That is an amazing point. Yes. And its a circus. Its not the United States of america. The values that our country was founded upon. Were going to leave it there. In 2017, according to company filings, the median amazon employee earned 28,500 while jeff took home 1. 7 million and his net worth is around 164 billion, making him the wealthiest man in modern history. Joining me, Business Tech correspondent. Buff with you have been working on the compensation for quite some time. We have seen the stock take a hit because of the way it is structured, customers and shareholders, not employees. This move doesnt serve shareholders. They are down a half point. What we are seeing is a reaction to a move that amazon is following other retailers. We have to remember, earlier this year, walmart raised wages to 11 an hour. Cities and states are raising wages. Here is why. Overall, without mandates to raise wages, we see little wage growth in this recovery over the past decade. You see the cost of living going up. Amazon workers speaking out saying we cannot afford living a normal life, a basic life, now he is coming in to do this. Lets remember, jeff is not doing this out of the goodness of his heart. He is doing this for a couple reasons. One, a new headquarters he is going to announce soon, hq2. Massive tax cuts and tax breaks to bring it to a smaller city. And facing immense pressure from senators saying look, if your people cannot live at a basic level and pay for the food and rent and mortgage, we are going to threaten, by law, proposing a bill to say, we are going to start penalizing you for it. If your employees are on food stamps, we are going tax you for it. Has he made a comment around this . When they were tax can you wants, we heard companies are going to start raiseing wages. The argument was, unless you force them to do so, they are not. Are they facing pressure from the increased cash on the Balance Sheet from the tax cut, what are they doing with it . There is some pressure. Not all companies are responding to that pressure. Ding, ding, ding. Exactly. Its a small per cent. We are seeing him respond because people are starting to notice. Perhaps it is having a social impact on his image. He is building a legacy for himself. He is trying to start a foundation. Theres a lot going on. His personal reputation is at stake here. Amazon does not respond well when we hear from worker who is are having serious documented proven problems working, especially in their fulfillment centers. When does it take effect . November 1st. The competition for Holiday Hiring this year is epic. It is going to be hard for macys target and hamson to compete. It is a tough market. I can choose where i want to work. Amazon saying, i want to be that place. Thank you so much. A big day for amazon employees. Shareholde shareholders, if you made a ton of money on stock, chill out.
