Coverage of national and international news, including breaking stories. Election again this november. Over the next three months im going to do everything i can to keep America Great again. To keep America Great again. That sentence doesnt even make sense. Sex, lies and betrayal. Manaforts defense team goes after rick gates painting him as the ringleader who stole millions from manafort to support a lending. Had a great day. A great day. And turn signal, teslas ceo elon musk comes Out Of Nowhere on twitter, suggesting he has securelied funding to take the Company Private in what would be the biggest buy outin history. Hearings the question, is it for real . Or is it musk to punish the sellers of the stock and the doubters of what he thinks is his genius . We begin, of course in the state of ohio where critical special election for an open house seat is still this morning too close to call. The republican Candidate Clinging to a narrow lead in a solidly red district. President trump won by 11 points less than two years ago. I have a great panel here to break all of it down. But first, lets take a look at where things stand at this moment. In the district, that has been in the gops hands for 35 years. Democrat Danny Oconnor trails behind Republican Troy Balderson by a razor thin margin. 1700 votes. That is less than 1 of all of the votes cast making this race officially too close to call. According to nbc news, we may not know the official outcome for weeks while all the conditioning and Absentee Ballots are tallied up. And if they end up within half a percent of one another, then they will be headed to a rekountsd. Republicans are claiming victory this morning while oconnor has not yet conceded. Tonight, im going to promise to you that im going to work relentlessly, relentlessly for this 12th congressional district. Can you believe how close this is . We are in a tie ball game. We went door to door. We went house to house. We made our case for james. Were going to make that case tomorrow. Were not stopping. Tomorrow, we rest and then we fight through november. President trump in signature style taking president for it, sweeting after my speech on saturday night, there was a big turn for the better. Nowle troy wins a great victory during a very tough time of the year. Nbc is not calling this race, it is simply too close to call. And weve got a development in a Coverage of national and international news, including breaking stories. Votes are counted. And there was a long i mean long, until five minutes ago. For chris kobach over jeff colyer. The incumbent here. Generally the recounts dont shave a lot off the leading margin. So kobach is sitting in a good position. As you mentioned, stephanie, the uncounted votes were in one place in kansas. Large suburban county, Johnson County, right outside of kansas city. Oberlin park, if you know the area. Suburbanites, college educated, white, color professionals. Republican leaders say, hey, you put kobach at the top of the ticket, you risk losing kansas. Guess what, overnight, Johnson County, the Republican Voters at least cognizant to win the county. But kobach held his own in Johnson County that colyer could not catch him. Again, not official its not a declaration by nbc, i think were pending a recount but kobach in a strong position to lead. And Republican Leaders when you saw bob dole come out the other day and endorse that candidate. And suburb s around kansas city and kobach, if hes too polarizing for 2018, factors a combination in place for kobach, a republican, to lose this. This is the outcome. Democrats wanted. If President Trump wants this outcome, democrats did, too. Balderson, hes only leading by about 1700 votes. When he got up there and spoke, it was like a victory speech. He was thanking a lot of people, including pence. But he did not thank john kasay who got a stronger Approval Rating in his state than the president does on a national level. Yeah, its fascinating the Cultural Divide in this district. First, i want to take folks through when we say too close to call. 1754, the margin for balderson. Why dont we call it . What are we waiting on . Its this, two polls of votes still out there, provisional ballot, 3435 of them. 11 or 10 days from now, they will be counted. We expect them to break for democrats. Are they going to break for democrats in numbers that will erase 1754 . No, we expect it to put a dent in that 1754. Other pool of voters, uncounted Absentee Ballots. Holy smokes, 5,000. Guess what, most of these are probably going to end up being ballots that were mailed out and nobody sent them back but if you did send them back and have it postmarked by monday that will still be counted. Some of these will still be counted. Some of these are also military. But in the end are we talking about a scenario where oconnor Laps Balderson . Probably not but a triggered recount thats what were waiting on. You know what im looking at there, 52. 2, 49. 3 and 1 to manchik. Is this an alert to green party guys saying hey guys, imagine if that 1 went to oconnor. Youd be looking at 50. 3 for balderson. Give us a look on the ground there. Reporter may, stephanie, for there are a combination of overtime and halftime in the race. Steve talked about the idea theyre still counting ballots here. The democratic candidate danny oconnor says hes still out campaigning today. Thats in part for this race where all of the votes have been voted but not counted. Thats in part because these two men are going to face off again in november. And democrats want to try to capitalize on the energy that they saw yesterday. To bring a district that has not been in close proximity of a win for democrats. Heres Danny Oconnor talking about what happens next this morning. Yeah, we got a few hours of sleep last night but were back up and working hard because we know working people need a voice in washington. Well be out campaigning today and having serious conversations with voters about their future. Reporter those conversations will continue this afternoon. Stephanie, so Many National democrats and National Republicans are watching this race. Theyre trying to figure out what they can pull out of it. Oconnor ran a meat and potatoes democratic campaign. He talked about health care. He talked about social security. He did not talk much about President Trump or russia. He let the fired up Democratic Base do that work for themselves. Sand focused on these core issues and came it appears within a Spitting Distance of a win. Well see how he proceeds with this message today and what democrats take from what they saw here last night. I want to bring you a fantastic panel. Anita kumar my friend mike testa, and caitlin, i go to you first, what was your biggest takeaway in ohio. I love that dress very much. Thank you. Republicans are spinning that as a win, but notably, you listen to what came out from the conversational leadership fund. This is a super pac involved in fundraising. They were sending Warning Shots last night saying even though this could be a win, republicans are being outraised over and over and over again and that cant happen. Also, wee focused on ohio, rightfully so sand there are other districts where trump won by less than this or Hillary Clinton won but also lets think about what happened in Washington State last night. There were a couple of races. Thats a twotiered primary system. And that gives us a good kind of barometer heading into november. Where the republican and democrat in those primaries were very, very tight. In two of those districts trudge won overwhelmingly as well. Were seeing across the country and the bigger picture, republicans are still concerned, even if they can claim victory in ohio. Mike, i want to stay on caitlins original point, that super pac stated while we won tonight this is a very tough political environment, moving forward, any republican running for Congress Getting vastly outraised by an opponent needs to start raising more money. So, yes, some are claiming victory. How worried should they be, especially in ohio . They should be extremely worried because there are 50 or 60 seats more flipable than this one. And this one came within 1 but i do have to pump the brakes on the entire reason were looking at it you said it a couple times but lets reemphasize it. This seat will be up in november. Were talking about three months of someone serving a congress thats still overwhelmingly republican. For those three months i look at the calendar, congress is in session only two weeks of those months. What a gargantuan waste of money . The thing is its a data point. If the democrats come within 1 or 2 , lever votes, its the same data point. And the data point is telling us this is imminently winnable, not overwhelmingly, but imminently winnable for democrats. What does it mean . So, big deal, you send another republican to congress for three months. Why should anyone waste their energy at the 1,000 voters who didnt vote for the democrat . Who actually holds this seat for the next three months doesnt really matter. What really matters is the data. I dont know about that. Why not send the message to the Democratic Party, lets all get on the same page. Youve got two major parties. One party believes Climate Change exists. The other party doesnt. Get on board with the team that does. I agree with that message. But im talking about, if you look at this race and say, oh, my god, greens, had you only changed your votes, your actual representation of this district shouldnt really matter that much to anyone. The symbolism and data should matter. No ones been more critical of jill stein and her voters than me but it doesnt really matter why america thinks this is important. But is the message broader than that . It might not even be to the green party, but the Democratic Party. Those who are pushing very far to the left, or to the middle, lets all get on the same page. Lets get a united force lets have one foe instead of fracturing our party. The democrats could be having that conversation going forward. Right. They did Something Different in this race, he was not really talking about President Trump. I know a lot of democrats in the country want to say, hes the foe, lets run against President Trump. He didnt really do that, he stuck to issues. So that might be the way to go forward. Which is lets not talk about President Trump. Theres enough out there, we hear that all the time. I just want to go back to the money for a minute. They poured a lot he didnt raise the money, the republican. He being whom . Balderson didnt raise a ton of money as we just said. National republicans sent money there. This isnt the kind of race they want to send money to. They got way more importantly to send it to as well. This is kind of a shot on the money. Do we have 80 seats that theyre going to have to send that much money to . Caitlin, President Trump has a good track record, he adores his candidates. We saw that happen in florida and iowa. And you look at what the president faced criticism for nancy pelosi. He said nancy pelosi, i wouldnt vote for her again. He backed off of that. Theres a lot of push for leadership in the Democratic Party but you cannot forget theres no greater fund razor for democrats than nancy pelosi. Thats right, thats the argument that she and other democrats have been making. Republicans use nancy pelosi as a boogieman of sorts because it is effective especially in these districts where there is a deep traditional republican dna. Theyre trying to use pelosi as a foil to say to Republican Voters who may have voted for trump reluctantly or didnt vote for him at all to say, look, you may not like what hes doing or behaving in office, do you really want a Democratic Congress and what that would would mean . Thats why theyre trying to tie all of these candidates to that to try to negates trumps own popularity which is of course what republicans are facing in all of these districts. I want to talk about Voter Turnout in highly populated areas. You saw a bigger turnout more than you did in rural areas this is an ominous sign for republicans. The highest income and best educated elements of the electrorate electorate, theyre showing up and the same thing happened in virginia a few months ago. Yes, once again, if were looking for data points it confirms where is everything were seeing, where is the excitement . These voters, thats a big ask so i think theres weariness in the rural areas. I want to question one thing does donald trump have a good record . Or has he chosen candidates who may be too extreme . This is something that sarah palin will in 2010 and 2012. She stated they and wound up losing the senate. Im not talking about the senate. To that same point, Jauvn Moroney said oconnor winning is a win for the democrats. Hes a Lightning Rod there. Theres just been so much on immigration, voter fraud. And he worked on the Voter Fraud Commission that the president had. He headed that up. Theres so Much Negative about chris kobach in the state. Its going to be tough. The notes on that Voter Fraud Commission, it went nowhere. He was odd Mon Initialled by the judge to go back and learn the law in that case, did you know that . Great conversation. Coming up, Rick Gates Set to take the stand for the third time in the Manafort Trial just a few minutes now. Explosive day two explosive. Remember when everyone said it was going to be such a boring trial . As Rachel Maddow said, its like a soap opera. Painting gates as a liar and cheater. Were going to go live to the courthouse, next. Yielded to no one. When i found you in my dna, i learned where my strength comes from. My name is courtney mckinney, and this is my ancestrydna story. Now with 2 times more geographic detail than other dna tests. Order your kit at ancestrydna. Com yeah, i got some financialbody guidance a while ago. M. Howd that go . Thats ridiculous. Well, i happen to know some people. Do they listen . What . Theyre amazing listeners. Nice. Guidance from professionals who take their time to get to know you. Xfinity xfi, simple, easy, awesome. Telephoned that he and manafort committed crimes together, Hiding Millions from the u. S. Government but he also admitted to embezzling. And on tuesday, he admitted to an extramarital affair as well and that gates lied. And saying that gates credibility is shot. Saying after all the lies youve told and the fraud youve commits do you expect this jury to believe you . Gates responds by saying, yes, i made a decision. Im here to tell the truth. Heres the lawyer after the crossexamination. How do you think you did with mr. Gates today . Mr. Manafort had a great day. Had a great day. I dont know what he constitutes a great day. But if i was sitting there on trial potentially going to go to jail for the rest of my life, none of that would feel great. I want to bring in nbcs National Security reporter julia ansley, okeydoke, has this crossexamination does so much damage to gates credibility . Reporter i think it puts a dents in his credibility. It remains to be seen if that will put a dents in the prosecution case, though. It seems for a large part of yesterday they were presenting a man shoo would not presenting a life to the jury. This is a man who was able to have a flat in london for his terrorist trysts. And its unclear, why he kind of still seems squirrelly. And if he was there to fell the truth, as he just put out from that transcript, why Wasnt He Being more direct . Why Wasnt He Being more remorseful . It may be that the jury is going to have a hard time believing but the prosecution, when they first started questioning him they were able to bring out a number of documents to corroborate great point by point, everything he was saying, the money he was moving illegally through the company that he ran with Paul Manafort. The lies that were told, they were able to corroborate all of that. Well see what the defense will do to the way the character of this man was portrayed. Thats very important its not just he said versus he said. Its he said and he said these are the documents supporting these claims. Pie want to bring in matt miller. Mike pesca and Caitlin Huey Burns with me. Gates admitted hes a liar, adulter, i want to point out to all of you dudes out there for your mistress that you have to pay rent, ive got to tell you if you pay rent, she actually doesnt like you. How does this play out in eyes of the jury . They dont pick their witness tess trial. The defendants do. And people committing criminal acts. Theyre not paying out to the sisters of notre dame. Thats right. Theyre not committing the acts with nuns, theyre committing acts with other criminals. The key for rick gates, one, the point about accountability he just highlighted. He said, look, i committed these criminal acts. I am here to admit to them, something that manafort is not going to do and i will pay a price. Im likely to have jail time because of the criminal acts. Two, its not just him coming in saying one thing and Paul Manafort saying another. You have evidence, repeated evidence, still witness to come with more evidence of Paul Manafort ordering these criminal acts to take place. While rick gates credibility is important and the jury has to believe him, they dont have to believe hes a saints. But they just have to believe that Paul Manafort committed criminal acts and directed him to do the same. Caitlin, do you agree with that . Is the prosecution relying on gates to prove misconduct or is gates part of a broader narrative to support the evidence they have. Well, both gates and manafort have so much evidence against them. And to matts point that evidence is there on paper in black and white. Whats really interesting about this whole thing is, as much as trump tries to distance himself from it, saying these guys, this is totally not relate to me. He is hanging over the whole trial, i wonder because he responds in realtime, how the response is, remember just last week when this was ticking up, he ordered or encouraged, depending how you parse those words as the white house did, it called for ending it altogether. I think back, mike, when i sat here with Anthony Scaramucchi when he was talking about what a great judge of character the president is and how he picks the very best people. At best, these are two complete sleaze bags. Whats your takeaway . I agree with everything that matt said. Everything ive read, every prosecutor said, this days going to come. You have a witness that the jury doesnt have to like or doesnt have to 100 believe. That witness is there to flesh out this huge document dump. And hes not the only witness. The accountant testified on day one. So, you have human beings, talking about documents, making them real to the jury. And then the jury will have to say no matter what we thought of gates, what do we think of the documents . Do we discount the documents . Do we discount the other testimony . It seems like its going to be hard for manafort to tell away the mountainsen of evidence. And the documents. Hes going to be hard. I think the judge has been out of line here. Its one thing to push the prosecution, to push them to be focused in the case to push them to move along. He at times has berated the prosecutors and for no apparent reason just because he can. One thing about is judges they have Lifetime Appointments for reason, because theyre isolated from political pressure. But you do see with some judges it kind of goes to their head. And that lack of accountability can spill over and turn into arrogance. I think his actions really have been unfortunate. Do they hurt the prosecution in a closer case . Maybe so. In a case like this where i think the evidence of Paul Manaforts criminality is so overwhelming i think its unlikely to have any impact, any really impact on the outcome. They cant count their chickens, though. I think back to complicated financial cases like enron which seemed like a slam dunk and it wasnt. Caitlin, how hard will this continue to be for the president to distance himself from manafort . Yesterday, we did hear President Trumps name come up for the first time. Is it just the beginning . Well, it depends, right . This trial is moving at a fast pace which is pretty remarkably considering everything thats involved. While the president , you know, can argue rightfully that this specific case doesnt have anything with his campaign, of course, Paul Manafort was the campaign manager. Rick gates was his deputy. Rick gates stayed on after manafort left the campaign. Again, i just think about what this prompts the president to do and how he responds that could entangle him in this even if its separate. All right. Were glowing to take a quick turn because weve got some breaking news. Republican congressman Chris Collins from the state of new york has been arrested. You hear what i said, arrested by the fbi on charges of securities fraud related to snyder trading. Collins surrendered to federal authorities this morning and is expected to be in court later today. Chris collins was the first Member Of Congress to endorse and acted as the Congressional Liaison to the trump Transitional Team back in 2017. Weve got a lot more to cover on this. I want to go to matt miller first. Matt, obviously, this story is just breaking now. But stunning, this isnt just being questioned. I mean, been arrested, thats a very big deal. Its a very big deal become you very rarely see this where the fbi is able to move in on a Member Of Congress and arrest them. Oftentimes, youll see them indicted, but to be arrested leads you to believe that, you know, there was some reason they might destroy evidence or something, and they had to arrest him rather than to indict him and let him turn himself in. To connect a couple stories weve been talking about here, the Manafort Trial and the Congressional Election last night, one of the opportunities that democrats have is to run on this Culture Of Corruption in the Republican Party where you have an administration thats stocked with people with the president on down. People like wilbur ross and ryan zinke. And members of the house who act like theyre unaccountable to anything. And you have the president who interferes with law enforcement. And november really is the chance for people who dont like whats hamming in washington to serve as a check on that kind of unbridled corruption. But, lets just walk through this, one of the things that President Trump ran and runs on, we continue to hear the chant drain the swamp. This is the swampest of the swamp. If were talking insider trading, this is a member of the government who was able to use his position to influence regulation on a company that he was able to trade the stock of. What caitlin. Fundamentally swampy, right . Because, you know, Chris Collins, were all talked to him many times. He was an early supporter of the president. Very supportive of him throughout. Trump, of course, as he does with most people who support him who are then caught up in legal messes tries to act like they are coffee boys. Or people who are insignificant. To matts point about the Culture Of Corruption, in 2006, democrats did run on their own kind of antiswamp, train the swamp campaign. Theyre bringing that back in some campaigns. And i think matt is right to point out that the aggravatiorg all this is say chance to focus on that. Drain the swamp. Lets remember the indictment relates to Innate Australian Bio company on which the Board Of Directors Chris Collins sat on. I will say two things, one to see how donald trump reacts if he takes it personally or if he lets it go. And i remember talking to Chris Collins before one of the debates and he was a staunch defender of donald trump not releasing his taxes. Because he said as a successful businessman if that information gets out there it could cause his competitor to have an unfair election. So Chris Collins is on the record that no one should be looking at a persons finances. Wow, what a morning for Chris Collins. Up next, teslas ceo elon musk tweets to secure funding to take his Company Private. But is this all just a ploy to get back on his critics . And does it constitute Stock Manipulation . Wow, the s. E. Together, were building a better california. The markets just opened and all eyes are on tesla. Moments ago the Board Of Directors announced it is evaluating, evaluating taking the Company Private. This comes one day after elon musk, one of the worlds most powerful and unpredictable ceos sent his very cryptic tweet. Am considering taking tesla private. Funding secure. The tweet was sent 40 minutes after saudi arabia acquired a stake in tesla. Shortly after the tweet, the market halted trading the stock and reopened only after musk sent an email to employees kind of giving a little bit of a clarification. I want to bring in the ceo Wealth Management my friend downtown josh brown. Yeah. To me, this reeks of elon musk being the donald trump of silicon valley. Distract and change the conversation. He didnt like what wall street analysts were saying about the company in the First Quarter so they said they shouldnt get to talk about it, they shouldnt ask questions. He hates shortsellers. His opponent, his critic, he obsesses over it. Thats elon musk here. To say he secured funding with no filing, how is that marketing . I was on the air when the news broke on the Halftime Report there were four other traders on the desk and it was wait a minute, can you actually do this . If youre pursuing Strategic Alternatives you would actually issue a press alert. Ask them to halt your stock for spending. Something like we might go private at 420. Its shocking but its not out of character. Its not out of character for musk. Right. From the fcc perspective, from social media could that be . You are actually able to with social media if all receive it at the same time. There was an issue with netflix using facebook page, i think they had crossed 1 billion streams or Something Like that. It was 2012. He was excited about it, he put this on his personal facebook page, and they didnt take any action, but i think this is like, i think it forced the relate e regulators to say, okay, there are new channels of mass dissemination, and of course, there are rules for that. Its easy to say at a Board Meeting elon musk did bring this up as an option. I can bring up a lot of things as an option. But is it always a rational case where there would be a strategic buyer who wants to take them private right now, when youve got a company with Production Issues . No, its probably not realistic. If you read the notes this morning, jpmorgan comes out and says, well, hes kind of the ceo, and he did say it so were going to model it. By the way, look at how the bonds are trading. The bonds actually went up yesterday. The bonds are not indicating to the street that anyone believes youre going to have tens of billions of new debt issued, right . Because if that was the case you would have seen the option reaction. The other thing theres a huge delta, spread between where the stock is now and the Quote Offering of 4. 20. There would be much less than arbitrage opportunities. So, i think, everybody is looking at this saying, okay this say little trumpian in that elon feels he has to Say Something and then putting out a statement. Like weve seen from the white house. What does the board look like here, does the board of tesla thats what i want to get into. We talk about the board. His brother, youve got a murdoch. Elon musk has made his investors a fortune. By the way, the shorts they have not made any money for their shareholders. The longs have made a lot of money. This is a 60 billion market cap from an ipo seven or eight years ago. No one is doubting that the company made money. You cant look at the board and say you have failed shareholders. You financially cant do that. It would be tempting to say, hey, heres six or seven people that are Rubber Stamping whatever he wants. Do you think that the average shareholder wants anything other than elon getting his way . Probably not. But the stock has made a ton of money. Is the Company Profitable . No, theyve lost 8 billion in four years. Great. Has it hurt shareholders . When you have a fiduciary duty to a shareholder, as a board of director as a director on the board, its about are the shareholders being treated fairly. Theyre absolutely being treated fairly. The company Isnt Making Money and theyre making a fortune. Theyve never made money, now theyre saying theyll make money in the second half of this year. The bears are saying this is a massive distraction technique. Where have we seen this elsewhere, whereby, it gives an opportunity to maybe rejigger some of these forecasts, agency they have the discussion about Finding Somebody who wants to take on 60 billion in debt. Josh, because the just shareholders are making a ton of Money Doesnt Mean that the board is doing it . Tell me in a year, well see what happens. I would say ten years ago, madoff investors were probably super happy hanging out in palm beach. And then they werent. Mr. Brown. No comments, stephanie. All ive said, weve got to keep asking question. Coming up, the pepsico ceo announced that shes stepping down. 2018, more than 50 of College Graduates are women. In fact, you know youve heard this from me before it there are more men named james running fortune 500 companies. Joining me founder and ceo of the fru. Tiffany defrew. Shes not the only one, we saw campbells sooup, mondelez. And the only one thats elevated a woman, you and i can talk all day long about the mother of women. Unfortunately, its not showing up where it counts. Lets start with congratulating indra nooyi, she had a incredible run. She took pepsi from 35 to 65 billion. It was a fantastic run, particularly for a ceo of this day and age, certainly, kathy warden is stepping up and were excited about that. And theres no doubt we dont have enough women in leadership and the reason why isnt rocket science. Weve got a pipeline decimated at different levels. We know that women enter the workforce at the same rates that men do, but theyre not promoted as much as men are. By the time we get to the middle, so, you think about the life cycle of people and families. The average family ceo gets that job at age 51. Well, about 15 years before that is when she needs to be ramping up her career, thats the same time that people are often having babies, procreating, right . Workplaces really are not still set up to support people who are caregivers so but where does this narrative come from that you hear, you know, everyone is all about diversity, and you go, girl. And motelin ipromoting women. What about those guys . When you actually look at businesses none of this is true. Those Top Executive jobs, im talking before you get to the ceo job are not conducive for coparenting. Its not an option. For the woman to the top she says i guess im not going to have a family or my partner must stay home. Think about the Travel Requests on these Top Executives. Theyre looking at that top job and seeing the demands of that top job and saying i dont necessarily want to do that. And can we give a shout out to indra nuis husband, he has been a partner to who. I am here today, when i left this morning my husband was feeding my kids breakfast, they can do that. So this idea that only women can be the primary caregiver is really a part of the issue as well. But arent you distressed . Someway, any fortune 500 companies have probably asked you to come talk to them, talk to their team. To give a speech. But when you look out into the audience its junior and mid level Staff Members who are women and those on top continue to be dudes. Its completely frustrating. Its also frustrating because we know that 90 of ceos are pulled from line roles. So when we talk good women in the c suit, suite, of which ar there many, we still have to keep work. My wifes work is advancing women and girls. Im going to keep going. Yes, its frustrating. It distressing . Yes, but indra inspires me and im going to continue the good fight. You inspire me. My friend tiffany, thank you so much. Were going to leave it there. Up next, eight kids a day are killed or injured by a gun not properly secured in a house. Now the brady center is out with a simple solution to solve this problem. Well have that next. But allstate actually helps you drive safely. With drivewise. It lets you know when you go too fast. And brake too hard. With feedback to help you drive safer. Giving you the power to actually lower your cost. Unfortunately, it cant do anything about that. Now that you know the truth. Are you in good hands . Come hok. , babe. Nasty Nighttime Heartburn . Try new alkaseltzer pm gummies. The only fast, Powerful Heartburn Relief Plus Melatonin so you can fall asleep quickly. Oh, what a relief it is my son just called me on the phone. Does he not know im on tv right now . Hilo. Today this is the 8th day of the 8th month of the year. A new campaign is shining a light on a chilling statistic. End family Fire Campaign created in part by the brady center says that eight children a day are accidentally killed or injured by guns of relatives, of relatives or friends that were not securely stowed. Take a look at part of their new advertisement. Dad, do we have a gun . Whats that . Do we have a gun . I need it to protect you, your sister and mom. I bet its on the top shelf of the closet under your sweatshirt. What about when its just me and mom . You taught me to be brave, i can use the gun to protect her. No, justin, i promise ill teach you how to handle a gun when youre old enough. What if i dont make it to old enough . Chris brown is the copresident of the brady center and she joins me now. Chris, a prominent member of the Gun Safety Alliance she taught me Somebody Invitesmy Kid over for a play date i pick up the phone and say do you have a gun in your housing and is it locked up . In that small little way its made a difference for me. Talk to me about what youre trying to do in a broader sense because its not at all antigun, its responsible gun. Thats right. Really what were trying to start is i can dialogue about what it means to be a responsible gun owner America Today. And were started with kids because today in this country theres a staggering statistic. We have eight kids a day, as you well noted, who are injured or killed with a gun in the home. Why is that . Because we have about 4. 6 million children in America Today living in homes with loaded and unlocked guns. We really need to focus on this issue and create a term like Designated Driver and Secondhand Smoke changed the issue and dialogue around Drunk Driving or smoking to actually save lives. And thats what we want to do. Its certainly not antigun, its recognizing we have millions of guns in this country in peoples homes often brought in to protect the very families that are put at risk when they are loaded and unlocked and unsecured in that home. Youre making a difference here and oftentimes youve got the antigun, Pro Gun World and never the two shall meet. But i know that you sat down, you had focus groups with gun owners, gun rights activists. Yes. What was their sentiment when you sat with them and how do they feel about this initiative . They are fully supportive of this initiative. We had such interesting conversations. And one of the things that i think is important about this campaign is whether youre a gun owner or youre not a gun owner, the idea that a gun is used unintentionally to harm people, that its meant to secure, is Vileti Violative of any standard of the kinds of homes that gun owners want to have. Theyre very supportive of this. But beyond that, i think what were hungry for as someone thats head of an organization, is a way to foster i will say historically that the nra is safe storage. If you go if it is why wouldnt they take a position. Youd have to ask them. Id be very interested to hear officially what they have to say. But i think the proof of the pudding is in the mix. And weve talked to many gun owners, hunters, veterans, law enforcement. We have a huge numbers of groups who are out supporting this campaign who are gun owners. And understand, though, the importance of actually putting a name, family fire, to the kinds of incidents that are reported and happen every single day. Family fire. Absolutely no one out there wants to hear an incident of family fire. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Thank you. If youve got a gun in your home, if its who you are, please lock it up. That wraps us up this hour. Im stephanie ruhle. Coming up right now more news
