And aluminum tariffs set to expire at midnight. U. S. Allies are bracing for a trade war. How about a lesson plan . Teachers in the state of arizona set for another day of walkouts as they fight for wage hikes. Were here to shape our youth and if we dont have the resources to do that, whats going to happen to our students when they grow up . We begin this morning with a growing expectation surrounding the president s upcoming summit with north koreans kim jongun. On the one hand, youve got officials and the president insisting theyre willing to walk away if they did not make a deal. But others calling for a Nobel Peace Prize. That can be a powerful incentive to get something done here. First, i what nt ant to explain. It is one thing to have an ann coulter or even Lindsey Graham saying trump deserves a Nobel Peace Prize. This morning the president of south korea said he also thought trump should win it. Folks, we dont even know whether or not the summit is going to take place. But that did not stop Trump Supporters in michigan from echoing that sentiment. Chanting, nobel, nobel, when the president brought up the subject of north korea. Nobel, nobel, nobel thats very nice, thank you. Thats very nice. Nobel. I just want to get the job done. All this comes as developments on the Korean Peninsula are moving extremely fast. In the latest reports regarding fridays summit between the korean leaders,th south says kim jongun promised to abandon his Nuclear Weapons if the u. S. Would promise not to invade his country. He also promised to shut down his countrys only known nuclear site and invited the United States and south korean experts to watch it happen. All of this sounds fantastic. Heres a big question. Could the hopes for the summit grow so high that anything short of Historic Deal could be seen as a failure . On the sunday shows, you could hear some of trumps own officials trying to reel back expectations. This administration has its eyes wide open. We know the history. We know the risks. Were going to require those steps that demonstrate the denuclearization is going to be achieved. Were not going to take promises. Were not going to take words. Theres nobody starryeyed around here. Weve all been call add numbed of things. Naive is not usually one of them. As he says repeatedly, the potential for no deal at all is also there. I want to bring in nbcs Peter Alexander at the white house. Peter, talk of a Nobel Peace Prize. On one hand certainly sets the bar high. Or is that what guys like Lindsey Graham are doing to push the president to make sure he doesnt bluff, to make sure he doesnt walk away . The president himself has been amping up the expectations. Recently casting himself as this great deal maker. Insisting i have the responsibility to see if i can do this. Obviously successfully convincing north korea to denuclearize would be a crowning achievement. This morning, musing publicly about the site of a summit. On friday he said it was down to two countries. But today apparently more than that, tweeting numerous countries are being considered for the meeting but would peace house, freedom house, on the border of north and south korea be a more representative important and lasting site. Just asking, he writes. Claiming almost all of the credit for the summit and addressing prospects Going Forward. Take a listen. Denuke. Well see how it goes. Again, whatever happens, happens. I may go in, i leave. Its not going to be a john kerry who makings thes that hor iran deal. Similar pledges on multiple occasions with little intention of sticking to it. The white house realizes that. John bolton, you played a clip earlier, saying the u. S. Wants to see real commitment in his words, insisting there will need to be a full, complete total disclosure of everything related to their Nuclear Program with a full International Verification to ensure that action happens this time around. Stef. All right, thanks, peter. I want to bring my panel in. Bobby gosh, former International Editor of time magazine. Noel ampore. And my friend kate lynn huey byrnes, political reporter for real clear politics. I want to talk of a Nobel Peace Prize, thats a very big deal. Setting the bar too high . Well, no, we were talking in the green room a minute ago and obama got a peace prize and nothing was done. One of the things i think we need to look at is the fact that trump has ignited this. We wouldnt be here in these negotiations if it wasnt for trump hammering down really hard. I can tell by the way youre looking youre not excited about this. Not at all, no. We are where we are because of what how trump has negotiated this. Which was really pretty hard swore. You know, a lot of name calling. But whatevers going on, i think its working. The other thing of it is, we dont know whats happening in that meeting with pompeo. But something happened. I dont know if you guys, you know, honed in on the body language of, you know, the south korean president and kim jongun. He was grabbing his hand. He was smiling. This is not the behavior that we saw from kim jongun months ago. And south korean president is the one who has said Nobel Peace Prize theres a reason. There are skeptical Trump Supporters who voted for the president and said his behavior is so crazy, it just might work. Is this an example of that, bobby . Thats certainly what theyre saying this morning. What are you saying . I have to agree. I think that trumps belly belicose rhetoric has helped to this point. Not directly what hes saying about but people are also afraid because hes unhinged . To put pressure on north korea. So it has worked. It has brought these. I mean, look, if the president of south korea is willing to give trump credit for making this happen, we have to acknowledge that he has more information and he has much more at stake than we do. So thats not the same thing as saying he deserves a nobel prize, lets be clear. Just because the nobel commit ent committee lowered the bar for obama doesnt mean theyll do it for trump. Or is the south korean president playing to President Trump saying i Say Something like this and trump wont walk away . Trump loves a compliment like that. This will get trump to absolutely focus on it. If the south korean president wants to make sure this summit happens, calling for the president to get the nobel, thats going to help it. We have to talk about the way in which this president is driven by being able to do things that his predecessors havent been able to do. He mentioned that time and time again. Thats his jam. Thats his jam, for sure. Even friday standing next to angela merkel, saying, look, nobodys been able to do this, listing all the president s, and i feel a responsibility to do this. I think its important that of course its big news that the south korean president is saying that, and we have to assess kind of how important that is to trumps own aim for moving something forward like that. On fox news over the weekend, he was specifically asked watt United States wants from north korea. Will President Trump insist that kim give up, ship out, all of those Nuclear Weapons, all of his nuclear fuel, all of his Ballistic Missiles before the u. S. Makes any concessions . I think thats what denuclearization means. Is there any possibility that the u. S. Would accept north korea as a Nuclear Power and allow them to keep some infrastructure . I dont see how thats possible. Is that realistic . Hes not saying not, hes just saying how he doesnt see thats possible. This is a regime that defines itself by power. Nuclear power is what makes kim jongun a world figure. The reason were paying attention to him at all is because hes got Nuclear Power. Otherwise north korea is a poor country with an overlarge military that cant feed its people. Nuclear power is the reason. I can see him making a deal that has vague promises that says well give us testing. What if they dont need to test anymore. Thats exactly right, they dont need to. I dont see them actually physically giving up their nukes. What if they dont need to test anymore . What if theyve done enough testing to figure out weve got the capabilities . Thats a possibility. Youve got to realize that john bolton doesnt mince words. When you say he doesnt mince words, you mean mince words against muslims . No, no, i say all the hateful rhetoric he has put out oh, its so much fun being a republican everyone, i get to defend you just said he didnt mince words. My guard was down. On this topic though, he has said how can you tell north koreans are lying, when their lips are moving. So he doesnt have a lot of trust with north korea in general. Nor should he. Do you think that maybe some of of this turnaround is because china sanctions, prove they were working maybe . No question. This is really about no question, not only its trade partner, without pressure from china, this doesnt happen. But chinas had opportunity to put pressure before. Lets acknowledge trump has put pressure on china they could think hes unhinged. Like we think kim jongun is a nut. They could think trump is a nut. He could actually punch the button and do something. They dont know him. Nixon used to say this. Richard nixon going back that far used to say i want people to think im crazy. I want them to think i cant be trusted. Under nixon, we had great foreign relations. He may have been a bozo on one issue we also had kissinger. Im not sure mike pompeo qualifies in that weight category. I can try. Look, if there is if theres a facetoface discussion between trump and kim jongun. Kim jongun already comes out the winner. Hes already been taken seriously by the most powerful country in the world. He has said hes going to stop testing. Its an important statistic. North korea has tested six times. India tested six times. Pakistan tested six times. We have no question that india and pakistan today are fullfledged Nuclear Powers. North korea does not need to test anymore. Giving up testing, not a big deal. Plenty of experts say the use of the site is already compromised. It cant be used again. A few years ago, they blew up an iranian test site in front of the worlds cameras. They brought an expert in from the u. S. To take a look at that. And they said u. S. Experts could come in now. Weve seen this movie before. Its not enough to just say theyre going to denuclearize or for us to say we insist they denuclearize. Well have to see when the rubber meets the road. Hold on, katelyn, if President Trump tears up the iran deal, does it make this deal harder . Well, he doesnt see theres a question, right, about what the u. S. Credibility is when it comes to making these deals. If were ripping up the iran deal and then expecting to make some kind of negotiation with north korea. The president , though, that criticism is certainly warranted. The president , though, doesnt seem to be reacting to that. You heard him in that rally saying john kerry made a terrible deal on iran. Im not going to do that on north korea. So we dont see him thinking about that, at least publicly in this way. The president is setting a very high bar for himself when it comes to north korea. Saying that nobody else has been able to do it of course but i could. Hes been, you know, talking to the crowd about it. Last week he tweeted that the war between north and south is over. Has no one been able to do it . I heard Michael Hayden this morning saying weve been here before. Have we . Thats why its very important to see what are the ramifications for north korea if the talks do not go well. What is the u. S. Going to do if we do not have a full denuclearized north korea . What is we havent talked much about that. What a walk away looks like. A walk away does not look good for President Trump because hes invested so much of his political what does it look like for people. It doesnt look for kim, it doesnt matter. He already comes out of this looking good. Hes made peace with south korea. He has offered to trump is not going to be shamed. Yes. But the thing is, trump has to control a message in a country where theres an open media. That is likely to criticize him as not. Kim jongun does not have that problem. He controls the media. This is important. One of the things i would look out for ahead of these talks is how the north korean media is covering this. What is kim telling his own people . This is something thats crucial. Is kim telling his own people i want to give up nukes . So far, he has not done that. When kim starts talking that language with his own people, remember, we only began to trust gorbachev back in the day when he allowed his own people more freedoms. Not just giving up, not just promising to give up nukes. Good point. Coming up, please Pay Attention to this, thousands of teachers, theyre planning to take to the streets, demanding more resources for their classrooms, as well as pay raises. Despite a very warm visit with french president macron last week, President Trump has not granted a permanent exemption for eu members. Merkels visit also yielded no deal. The eus leaders vow to defend themselves. I want to bring in my colleague from cnbc, kayla toshy. Can he say hold off, just give it more time . He can just as easily issue another memorandum that essentially says for these countries, the deadline will get extended. For these countries, the tariffs are going to begin at midnight tonight, or for these countries, theyre going to be exempt from these tariffs permanently. Ive talked to about six people who have been briefed by the administration and they say that there will be some bespoke extensions based on nafta and other things the administration is trying to get out of them. Well then, whats the holdup . Steve mnuchin is on fox business this morning. He was asked multiple times about exemptions. Of course im not going to comment on what the president is going to do or not going to do. The president is going to make a decision on this. He will make it quickly i assume because the deadline is tuesday. And the decision will be to extend or not . Im not going to comment on what the president s decision is in advance. Why be so vague . It could have been a nice win after macrons visit, after merkels visit, that the president could have announced them. And didnt. Is it more that the president likes drama and a bachelorstyle rose ceremony . Or is it something broader than that . Why wouldnt mnuchin tell us . I think the president truly believes the longer they go and the closer they get to these deadlines, the stronger concessions he would get out of these allies. This is an administration that has extremely strong stomachs and a lot of patience when it comes to these trade issues. Certainly no issue getting right up to that deadline to see whether that forces some allies to come to the negotiating table with something different. To that end, europe has said as recently as last friday theyre not going to be negotiating or offering anything under threat. Theyre preparing their own retaliation which the president doesnt seem to be faced by. To that point, how big of a stick does the United States have . Theres often criticism that the president s sort of sensibility is outdated, and were not the mega super power we once were. What position visavis the United States . Have said that allies cant retaliate Peter Navarro is not considered a respected economist who said china is a currency manipulator the entire campaign trail and hes flat out wrong. Lets put Peter Navarro aside. What do actual respected economists say about this . The u. S. Is the biggest trading partner for almost every single country that is currently being considered for one of these exemptions. The president and his entire economic team, not just navarro, feel theres an incredibly strong position. Youve had commerce secretary rosetting even what the eu and china were proposing for retaliation were small potatoes according to the total output of the u. S. Economy and it wasnt something that would break anyones backs. Tell that to people in tennessee, in wisconsin, who work at the companies where some of these exports would be dramatically affected. The bottom line is 3 billion is not going to kill the economy here. Thats the white houses line. Wheres larry kudlow in all this . Whos always been an antitariff guy . Hes said hes a free trader. He believes the president at heart is a free trader. But that there could be some shortterm pain in order to get the result long term . The president has said that as recently as saturday night. Thats tougher uphill for people like kudlow to swallow, it is certainly a position hes willing to take. Well see what happens at midnight tonight. If this deadline does go into effect, you have custom officials at every port, every border in america that are going to have to be putting these levys on. People say even the five weeks for the administration to allow that to happen wasnt enough to get the process. That is something they want to avoid. Yep, logistics nightmares. The marvel comic book adaption ranked in 250 million bucks. And how about a big merger dealer. Announcing their intention to merge into one company if the government lets them. A similar merger was floated in 2014 but the Obama Justice department had antitrust concerns. It would cover about 100 million customers. It would shrink the Major Players in the u. S. Market to just three which could potentially reduce competition and raise prices. Both companys ceos appeared on cnbc just moments ago to discuss the merger. Theres been gyrations as to, you know, whether it could get through from a price or a government standpoint, but one thing that was never confused, especially with marcelo and i, is these two Companies Made sense together. For more now, im joined by my old friend alex sherman. Theres t mobile. He would be the ceo if the merger went through. Walk us through the concerns that the consumer will be hurt because there wont be price competition. Typically if you go from four players in an industry to three like whats happening here, youre going to draw some antitrust concerns because obviously the idea generally speaking is more competition, the better. You have more players competing, trying to steal customers from each other. These four carriers are very much in the same industry. Just trying to be their mobile wireless provider. The counterargument is were entering a new world here. Something called 5g. Of course you look at your phone. In this new 5g world which could be coming in spot markets as soon as the end of this year, it is possible that sprint and t mobile can argue to regulators that they need to combine in order to have the ability to compete with at t and verizon on capitol hill expenditure spending. Isnt that the most important thing here . Because at t and verizon are so much bigger and have so much more money that as we move into 5g, sprint and t mobile cant compete, so it will really be like two bohemoths. Thats the argument they will make. It costs billions of dollars to buy wireless spectrum through government auctions or acquiring other companies that own this spectrum. You look at the market caps, you can see, they are much smaller. A pretty good argument. Really up to regulators to see at todays world or tomorrows world and in order to determine if this deal makes sense from a consumer standpoint. John ledger made the point just there, and weve heard him make it for years that hes always going to be about price cutting. He loves competition. Hes the guy who called at t and verizon dumb and dumber. Wa whats the Trump Administration likely to do here . That is the question about this merger. Because, look, these two companies are Going Forward with this merger thinking they have a better shot at getting a deal done in a Trump Administration than an Obama Administration as you mentioned, which basically told the companies dont even try it back in 2014. But then we see the Trump Administration blocking the at t time warner deal. Really, that deal, which deals with vertical integration instead of horizontal integration, meaning youre not really condensing the playing field. Most experts thought that deal would have an easier time of passing than this one. If the government were to block that one, theyre saying maybe the chances are less they would allow this one to go through. I have no idea. I think the market basically seeing this as a 50 50 proposition that the point. Well, alex sherman, in the time warner deal, maybe the president has some feelings about that. Ahh your wing nut has you covered. Hi. Introducing planters crunchers. A nutty crunch inside a flavorful crunch. In todays money, power, politics, i want to be rich and im not sorry. That is how my next guest titled a weekend oped in the New York Times. What caught our eye, it was written by a woman, unafraid to say what men have been proudly boasting for neons. The author joins me now. Jessica, for years, women have said i cant wait to marry rich. This is different. Your debut novel was a smash. Youve earned your own success. Why write a piece declaring you want to be filthy rich . Well, good morning, on that note. So the piece was really born out of my next novel. Im going on a book tour in two weeks and im always thinking about what are the topics i want to be talking about with my readers. What are the hot points. And, you know, the next book is about a group of high achieving women. I was looking into the research about how we respond to ambitious women and, you know, its not well. It made me flash back to all the times over the years, particularly with my first book, at the publicity events around that, and, you know, i never really hid my light under a bushel and i played down my accomplishments. I played down my vision for my life because i didnt want to come across as too boastful or selfpromotional. Is it because its often perceived that women who are too powerful lose their femininism, i mean, lose their femininity . I definitely think people have a strong reaction to women who kind of aggressively seek power and money. And i just think that its something that men get away with a little bit more. And women are attracted to men like that. Women are attracted to men like that. Its not necessarily true in the reverse. And so, you know, but more women have been out there and really claiming their ambition. I do think Public Perception of that is changing. Because it seems like were really starting to embrace that attitude from women. Okay, you pointed out this stunning finding from t. Rowe price. Last year, parents who have only boys still save more money and pay more money for their sons educations than parents who only have girls. That is mindblowing to me. I know, i was really dismayed to see that too. Because i think of course thats going to have an impact on the way we socialize our kids. If were saving for boys educations, then the message thats transferred to them is youre the one whos going to deliver the return. I think girls are still raised to take care of people and to place others needs above their own. And thats not going to translate to success in the professional sphere when they grow up. People often say money equates power. What money does do in my opinion is give you financial freedom. If you have to get all of your money per se from a man, from a husband, from a father, you lose some of that power because you cant make your own decisions in order to survive and thrive. In it, you share that at age 15, you were assaulted, sexually assaulted, and after therapy, you said, and i want to share this quote, i decided i could not consider myself successful unless i was somebody powerful, somebody nobody could hurt. Success became a means to wrest back control, literally increase my value. I share that thought, if i have my own financial independence, i can make a lot stronger decisions out there in this world. So you have that success. Do you think its everything you expected . Do you feel more free . Do you feel powerful . I do feel more free. I feel like i have choices and options in my life that i didnt have when i was younger. And thats a big part of my healing process. And you feel like i can walk away from a bad situation every time. I am financially empowered to do so. Money doesnt necessarily make you happy but what it does is give you the freedom to make choices. Thats important. I love the piece. Thank you. I cant wait to read your next. Whats the new book called . The new book is called the favorite sister, its out may 15th. Yes, it tackles these issues. I think its a really great fun read with some strong messages. If my sister stacys watching, id like you to know youre mine. Amazing piece. Arizona teachers are some of the lowest paid in the country. With an average salary of a little more than 47,000 bucks. Many of the teachers marching insist their walkout is about much more than their salaries. They also want more funding and smaller class sizes. They want to be able to do their jobs. You know what their jobs are . To educate the next generation of what i believe are great americans. For more, im joined by nbcs Steve Patterson on the scene in phoenix. Steve, go through what the latest is. Because its not just teachers that are marching. Youve got the parents of these students. Theyre saying our Education System is crumbling because theres not enough money. Yes, stephanie, this is when things truly get interesting. Youre talking about day three of this walkout. Week two, for thousands of teachers affected. Thousands of students affected. This will be a sea of red in just a few hours. You can see some of the teachers starting to gather here. Oh, by the way, the state legislature is now in session. A. 20 of pay raise for teachers over three years. 100 million for schools. Teachers say there is no say t deal. They say even if there is one theyre not happy with it. Joining me is joe thomas. Hes the head of the arizona education association. You can tell me, respond to that deal, that announce meant from the governor last week. All weve seen is a tweet and some talk points. Weve not been able to see any plan or what the governors going to do to end the teaching crisis in our state about the we have 10 of our positions that arent filled, they leave for other states because they can get raises. And we have a billion dollars that was taken from our school system. But we need to see that money back in the system now that were out of the recession. We had no governor, no legislature in ten years move on that. Reporter the governor says a budget will be introduced this week. If that does happen, does that then put the pressure on this movement . Youre talking about parents that rely on child care for these schools, kids that rely on lunches in many cases. Talk about where the pressure is now with this movement . Well, the pressures on the legislature and government. We waited ten years to get in money back into the system where we can have appropriate class sizes to where we can meet all the needs of our students. This whole movement is about our students. The governor wants to make it sound like its about raises or wages or salaries. Thats a piece of the puzzle. But we have building that are falling apart. We have bathrooms that you wouldnt go into. We have technology thats old and outdated and all of that has to be addressed with a comprehensive plan as opposed to bandaid after bandaid after bandaid. So when we hear a tweet and see some talking points, were not impress pd the we need to see the work behind that and make sure its sustainable and good enough for the students. Thank you so much for joining us. Were going to be here all days that backdrop fills in. Teachers rallying for more education funding. Well bring it to you coming up today. Back to you. I want to bring my panel back. Noelle, to you. These walkouts are significant. Theyre happening in red states, purple states, its a budget issue. Wheres the money coming from . Good question. And area you know, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Had is an example of whats going on all over the United States. When we were all talking before this, you know, in the break, this is a bigger problem. We are not attracting teachers, good teachers, good, smart people because were not paying them anything. And the loser, the loser of the week is the students. The loser of the week is america. Because education is where it all starts. And if you you care bin come and equality, thats what you need to care about. Wheres the money going . We pour millions and millions of dollars into the Education System. Wheres it going . Explain to me who year after year is saying no pay raises for the teachers . Nope, lets decrease the budget so they cant get new textbooks . Interestingly enough, just looking at the bare politics of this, its happening frequently in red states. Kentucky, west virginia, oklahoma, arizona as we were just reporting from. Why. Thats measures that are republican Governors Campaign on. Cutting spending is a very attractive thing to people, of course. But when it comes to education, people are feeling that its a tangible thing. If you were a forgotten american in a red state saying youre not getting a good job out there, the way your kids are going to get that good job is if they get a good education. Exactly. Whats interesting about arizona is there did is going to be a competitive governors race there. The governor is facing a primary challenge but also a democratic challenge. Ive been talking to democrats in arizona last week about the senate race, but theyre saying that folks in the state are very motivated to turn out to vote because of this education issue, not because of trump, not because of the national politics, but this is going to be a driver, i think in some states. Then walk me through, i want my taxes lower but i want education funded. Heres the thing. We are all taxpayers. And as an american taxpayer, i almost feel like that america should put out some sort of a proxsy. Were investing in the United States of america. We pay taxes. I want to know where the money for the Education System is going. I want a line by line. We need to pay our teachers. I feel like i have invested in usa incorporated. I put my tax dollars in here. Im concerned about education. I understand about defense. I want a breakdown. I want a proxy. I want something saying heres the money. For those saying put billions of dollars into a wall to mexico, they want to put money into a wall to mexico but not into our education . You have to realize that when donald trump when he was running for president said that mexico is going to pay for the wall, stephanie, he didnt say that we were. Scrambling alliances on this issue.
