Chief of staff john kelly as kushner fights to maintain his access to highly classified information. And quite the case building. Muellers russia probe collects its latest guilty plea. Some see a pattern forming. The white house insists theres nothing to see here. Its very clear that russia meddled in the election. Its also very clear that it didnt have an impact on the election. And very sad breaking news, one of the most influential voices of the 20th century, evangelical leader billy graham, has died. Well have more on Billy Grahams death and the life he lived a little later. But we begin today with the president talking about banning bump stocks, strengthening bump stock checks and possibly even putting an age limit on gun purchases. Does it represent Real Progress or Just Lip Service . Well take the talk and hope it means something. Nbcs kristen welker, we know the president has a busy day ahead. Guns are the focus right now. What are they talking about and what are the chances something actually gets done . When you talk about bump stocks, thats something the nra could actually get behind. Reporter thats right. First, steph, in terms of whats happening here at the white house, a white house official telling me there are going to be about two dozen students, parents, and teachers here for a listening session with the president. These are people who have been impacted directly by gun violence, including by the recent massacres, from columbine to sandy hook and of course from parkland, florida. Some of them, steph, have actually written letters to the white house asking to speak directly to the president. Today theyll get their chance. Its a listening session, steph, but they are calling for action. In terms of bump stocks, yesterday President Trump announcing that he has directed the department of justice to enact stiffer regulations against bump stocks. Those are the devices that effectively allow weapons to be able to fire off hundreds of rounds in a minute. Take a listen to what President Trump had to say yesterday. I signed a memorandum directing the attorney general to propose regulations to ban all devices that turned legal weapons into machine guns. We cannot merely take actions that make us feel like we are making a difference. We must actually make a difference. Reporter the fact check on that is that there will likely be legal challenges to those new regulations. So that still may be facing a somewhat uphill battle. Theres also obviously a very large focus on the legislation. President trump indicating early signs of support for a bipartisan piece of legislation that would effectively strengthen background checks. President trump tweeting about this, writing, whether we are republican or democrat, we must now focus on strengthening background checks. That legislation that were talking about would make the system of reporting concerns or any type of conviction more effective. But it wouldnt expand background checks. That was something that actually congress tackled in the wake of the sandy hook massacre in 2013, and it never made its way through congress. That piece of legislation that more than 80 of the people supported. So when it comes to actually enacting gun safety measures, congress has largely been very divided and largely been stalled on the issue. Now, this is a president who ran on a platform of protecting Second Amendment rights. So, steph, i end with the question that you initially posed. Will we see more than Just Lip Service or will there be real changes that takes effect . Well have to wait and see. Indeed we will, thanks so much, kristen, youve got a busy day ahead. Meanwhile, down in florida students from Stoneman Douglas high school headed to tallahassee where their local lawmakers were preparing to consider a ban on Assault Rifles like that ar15, the one that killed so many of their classmates last week on valentines day. About a hundred of them boarded buses for the 6 1 2 hour trip to the state capitol, hopeful they might be able to break the gridlock over gun control. The students spent hours lobbying their representatives. But it didnt change the political reality. A motion that would have brought the ban to the house floor was defeated by nearly a 21 margin. The vote left some in shock and others broke down in tears. One student said she felt like lawmakers are, quote, just not listening. The whole movement is being led by students. The ones who survived that shooting one week ago. Heres whats sick. Some people cannot quite get their heads around that. Young leaders, there are some conservative Media Outlets that are questioning whether these griefstricken students are just puppets of the liberal left, basically being used to try to gain sympathy for the gun control movement. You may have seen articles like this on your facebook page. Theyve already been shared more than 80,000 times. Are you listening, Mark Zuckerberg . Are you listening, Sheryl Sandberg . 80,000 times on facebook, the social media outlet designed to create community, show pictures of your kids, cats, dance recitals. The kids arent having any of it. Everybody who wants to call us out, who wants to try to say that people are controlling us, this is a student movement. I have talked with my friends at never again. We are all students there. Dave hogg, none of us are talking with adults. Were just talking out. Were making a change. It is the students. Were not acting. This is real. Imagine, to call these students puppets. Thats pathetic. Ashley kirk is a culinary teacher at Stoneman Douglas high school. She was there the day of the shooting and personally helped protect dozens of her students. Ashley, first, i want to thank you for your heroism and tell you how sorry i am for the week that youve just had. You know some of these kids personally. What can you tell us about them and this movement . Theyre a very eloquent bunch of kids. I mean, for the seniors that we have that have no problem voicing their opinions, i mean, they argue with us as teachers on their grades for a couple of points extra on some of their reports and stuff. Personally, david hogg was one of my students two years ago. I had him for about a week and then he decided he wanted to go into tv production and that was the elective he wanted, so i helped him with his guidance counselor to get him switched over. I knew then when i was talking to him as a sophomore that he was a very, very welleducated young man. He knew what he wanted and had no problem voicing his opinions or concerned, where his grades were concerned or anything that had to do with what we were doing at the school. Hes always been very involved with all the stories and stuff that go on. A lot of the children will come in and they used to take videos of things we were doing in the classrooms just to try to get a positive word out there for our school and the things that we were doing at marjory Stoneman Douglas. Imagine that, some view it as a hoax, because these young kids are eloquent, are welleducated, we think theres people out there who think they must be liars. What do you say to that, those who say they look to comfortable, they look to slick, they cant be for real . It makes me sick when i hear people saying that. The easiest way for me to explain it, when they asked why were out here doing these interviews, our brains kind of switched over, its not that weve compartmentalized or that were uncaring or unfeeling. Its because were so angry for what we experienced that day that theyve taken that energy and focus and put it into what is it we can do right now as an action. And these kids, theyre looking for some way to have their voices being heard. I mean, theyre the ones being told no, this cant be done, that cant be done. We always used to tell our kids, we preached to them, actions speak louder than words. Theyre out there trying to help these actions to make our school safer and to make it a better environment for them to go and learn. To the people who say, oh, yes, our kids, we always say theyre welleducated and stuff, yes, our school has a very high population of kids that go in to do things in politics or to become amazing doctors and get into journalism and do really awesome things with their lives. We have a very, very good group of kids at our school that enjoy educating. They like to learn. They like to learn and they have great teachers. You talked about how your community, your school is angry and taking action. Are you conflicted . Its my understanding that youre a lifelong republican, you voted for President Trump, you support the Second Amendment. Have your views been affected in any way as far as the gun issue goes since the shooting . Absolutely. I mean, ive had this ive had a talk with a lot of my friends, either facebook or facetoface, and those who call, and i have no problem talking to them about it. I still support the Second Amendment, were allowed to have guns and ammunition and youre allowed to hunt and youre allowed to gunpoint. Ive had people who have been angry at me, and say, ive been held up. But have you had a whole slew of kids running from a gunman . I still believe what the kids say. Theres no reason to have semiautomatic weaponry available. And to those who say well, its the problem with the school board or the fbi, there were many, many things that fell through the cracks, but the one thing that we know of, and, you know, its people the biggest thing they tell us is, you know, people people kill people, guns dont kill people. And we say we can help people, we can educate them, we can do whatever we want, but its the gun itself in the hands of certain people that should not have them thats causing these mass casualties. And for me and my fellow students and colleagues to go through what we went through on wednesday. Lets talk about who has a gun in their hands. Some say the answer is to allow people to have guns in schools. If you had a gun last wednesday, could you have stopped the attack . Could you have protected your students more . I teach culinary. And my job is to make sure they know how to cook and they know how to prepare themselves for food service and education. I say to that, okay, am i supposed to strap it to my body . Am i supposed to keep it in my desk . Am i supposed to hang it next to the door with my clipboard . Where do you want me to keep this gun . Then im going to have to react and say, should i grab as many kids as i can and pull them in, or am i supposed to go, unprotected by a kevlar vest or anything, in the direction i think the gunfire is coming from, and now im supposed to be Law Enforcement and protect children that im supposed to be educating . Where do we draw the line . When is enough enough as far as what we put on teachers . You also answered the question why is it these Stoneman Douglas students are so welleducated and well spoken, its because theyve got great teachers. Thank you. Thanks for joining me this morning. And again, im so, so sorry for what youre going through. Thank you. All right. I want to bring my panel in, my dear friend rick tyler, a republican strategist, and ben white, politicos chief Political Correspondent and a cnbc contributor. Rick, weve been talking about these students, these kids leading a movement, they say because its a youth movement, this time its going to be different. Other times we see lawmakers say its too soon, we cant talk about it. But because of social media, these students have said, dont speak for me, i want to talk about it, i want to go to washington, i want to go to tallahassee. Do you have any faith that this could change the conversation . I know weve been here before. These kids, some of them, werent even born when the columbine shooting happened. First let me acknowledge how unspeakably sad this whole event is. One of the things, the students are not only smart and articulate, they also come from a generation thats comfortable in front of the camera, thats significant. Thats a great point. My daughter, im always surprised at the things she can do on video, she gets on video herself. I ask her, why arent you nervous . Theyre just not nervous. It took me a long time to be comfortable in front of the camera and many times im still not, but theyre comfortable in front of the camera. Politically, look, i dont think a whole lot is going to change. I think the bump stock was a good thing that should have been done a long time ago. Bump stocks are dangerous not only because of rapid fire, but you also have less control with a bump stock. But there are the reality is, there are 300 million firearms in the united states. Theyre not going away. Theres Something Like 5 million ar15s, maybe as many as 10 million. Theyre not going away. The assault weapons ban which included the ar15 in 1994, not a single weapon was confiscated or collected. Theyre still out there because they all got grandfathered in. When the ban was sunsetted and expired, everybody went out and bought an ar15 because they didnt want that to happen again. The reality is youre not going to get rid of these weapons. I hate to say it but you have to harden these soft targets. What does that mean . My daughter teaches in elementary schools. Thank you. My wife teaches preschool. And in her school, thankfully, not only is there a resource officer in all the schools in our county, when you go to the front door and you pull on that door, that door is locked. There is no way to get into that school. When they acknowledge you through a video and let you in, you go into the office, thats where the resource officer is going to be. And you will not get into that school unless you are given permission. Can you defeat that . Sure. Can the students sneak in a weapon . They can. But thats a hardened target. I hate to say i dont like the idea that this campus in Broward County was very different because Broward County is an open campus. I just think we have to redesign these things. I hate to say it. But weve got to protect the kids. President trump possibly making the move on bump stocks, talking about background checks. Is he really going out on a limb here and doing something major, or is anything hes doing, hes really doing with the nras okay . Both of those things are with the nras okay. We know theyre fine with limiting access to bump stocks, we know theyre fine with toughening background checks. Why hasnt it been done before . Because republicans in congress, particularly the house, they fear a primary against a republican challenger who gets to the right of them on guns or abortion or immigration. So House Republicans are simply not going to support tougher gun control laws. I want to step back for a second to what i think is the real sickness at play here. You got into it with that interview. And the idea that there are people out there trying to make the case that these students are somehow hoaxes, that theyre being coached, that theyre making this up. This is a larger sickness at the root of our culture right now where you cant just say, okay, i respect what these kids are saying, i have disagreements on the efficacy of new gun laws, let me make my case to you. You have to go out there through social media and try to undermine their credibility and say theyre fake and say theyre bogus. 18yearolds who lost their best friends and teachers a week ago. Its reprehensible and disgusting. You know who liked to tweet, going after that young man david hogg . President trumps son, donald trump jr. I know youre in india, i hope you get a chance to see this, sir. It undermines trust in objective reporting. So many aggressive people want to undermine anything they disagree with. It cant be, ill make the arguments on the merits with you, im instead going to slime these kids who have seen their classmates gunned down and are passionate about fixing the problem. To go out there and try to undermine their credibility and slime them is the most reprehensible thing ive seen in a long time. Well, it is what it is. All we can do is try to support these kids. Good for them. Freedom of speech. Theyre getting their message out there. I want to bring in kioni mcgee, a democrat from the state of florida, a member of the house, hes the hundred that tried to get this Assault Rifle ban bill put up for a vote. Thanks for your effort. What happened . The entire world saw exactly what happened. 71 of my colleagues decided the debate wasnt appropriate that that particular time. Democracy was silenced with that vote on that board, that pretty much went directly towards the movement that these young kids were here protesting for. Is the legislation completely dead, then . Im saying . The legislation, is it completely dead, then . Nothing is completely dead. Were trying to get our colleagues to deal with this issue headon. Weve been fighting on this issue for years. In 1968, the movement was led by College Students and dr. King and a few others. In 2018, the movement will be led by high school and middle School Students who are sick and tired of politicians muting their voices. Adults couldnt get it done, maybe kids can. Republican leaders are saying they are still willing to consider age restrictions for gun purchases as well as some other measures, possibly banning bump stocks. Are you optimistic the house could pass something meaningful . As long as i have breath in my body i will always be optimistic. I can tell you this. As it relates to the increase in age, the increase in the wait period, that is, in my opinion, a Movement Towards a good step. However, in the light of everything thats happening, it is only a bandaid in the bigger scheme of things. Everything that we are seeing now has to do with the reality that we are looking at the ar15 that is causing the havoc, this weapon of mass destruction is causing havoc within our communities. Its affecting each and every one of us in different capacities. It certainly is. Thank you so much for joining us this morning. Thank you for your work. Thank you for your passion. Thank you, and were going to make sure the voices of these Young Leaders who have pushed forth this movement, that their voices are heard. Thank you so much. Were going to take a break. Next, another guilty plea in Robert Muellers investigation, this time from a high powered, very well connected lawyer. What would he be hiding that he would risk lying to the fbi . You know, a skadden arps lawyer, they know you get in big trouble for lying to the fbi. This is franks favorite record. This is franks dog. And this is franks record shop. Frank knowns northern soul, but how to set up a limited liability company. Whats that mean . Not so much. So he turned to his friends at legalzoom. Yup they hooked me up. And this is where life meets legal. Was a success for lastchoicehotels. Comign badda book. Badda boom. This year, were taking it up a notch. So in this commercial we see two travelers at a comfort inn with a glow around them, so people watching will be like, wow, maybe ill glow too if i book direct at choicehotels. Com. Who glows . Com no, please, please, oh shrieks in terror heavy breathing and snorting no, no. The running of the bulldogs . Surprising. Whats not surprising . How much money aleia saved by switching to geico. Fifteen minutes could save you fifteen percent or more. Welcome back. Im stephanie ruhle. Now to Robert Muellers russia investigation, and President Trump tweeting just a moment ago, quote, question if all of the russian meddling took place during the Obama Administration right up to january 20th, why arent they the subject of the investigation . Why didnt obama do something about the meddling . Why arent dem crimes under investigation . Ask Jeff Sessions. That tweet comes just a day after a dramatic new turn. Dutch lawyer alex van der zwaan appeared in federal Court Tuesday in d. C. , pleading guilty to making communications with former Trump Campaign aide dick gates who was charged along with Paul Manafort. Joining me now, the one and only ari melber, host of the beat which focuses on politics and hiphop on 6 00 p. M. Eastern right here on msnbc. I was at the allstar game this weekend, i am not kidding you, every other person i met was like, do you know ari melber . And i said, yes, in fact, i do. I met a number of stars in the Hiphop Community who are fans of you. Im touched by that. As they say in hiphop, were in the streets like sesame. There you go. Lets talk about President Trump now blaming president obama again. Ask Jeff Sessions . He recused himself. You make a great point. Also isnt it sessions, not session, President Trump . You make a great point on both typos and content. The president here asked a question, as he so often does on twitter, why isnt the Law Enforcement or Obama Administration government officials under investigation. And the answer, mr. President , is because theyre not accused of doing anything wrong regarding the meddling. The question that he poses is literally like discovering a crime and saying, why arent the police under investigation, why didnt they catch it earlier. Its a fine conversation to have about Police Prevention and when do we know what we know and what do we do about it. But the issue here is what the russians did, not how quickly they were caught. They were only caught legally because bob mueller was appointed after the firing of james comey and hes indicted them. Great point. Lets talk about alex van der zwaan. No one other than in the Legal Community knew who he was until yesterday. If youre a lawyer at skadden arps, one of the most wellknown law firms in the world, you know that lying to the fbi is going to get you in big, big trouble. While he might be okay with getting disbarred, his fatherinlaw is worth a cool 10 billion because thats how you roll when youre a russian oligarch, wouldnt he realize what a big risk that is . You would think it would be something he would know intimately from working with these kinds of cases all the time. Literally. It is bob mueller saying several things. Number one, anyone who lies, obstructs, or tampers with evidence is on the hook. So if youre a lawyer in the government, youre a lawyer in the white house, this kind of thing gets your attention. Number two, to your point, what was going on that made you decide you were better off risking lying to the feds than causing up the goods . Ding, ding, ding. As you say, its not big because of the person, you see his face on the screen there, he looks the part, he looks like a white shoe Law Firm Lawyer there, except he was not going in to represent a client, he was going in to plead guilty. They were trying to use the viber app and encrypted communications to talk to manafort and the ukraine, to cover up skadden arps involvement in an effort by proputin people to muddy up one of their opponents. The larger point is, why was this all going on in september 2016 . That brings us to question number three. I dont know the answer, but ill raise the question. Reading from the information, charging this lawyer for lying, van der zwaan made a false statement about, quote, a long time business associate of manafort and gates in ukraine who is defined only as person a. I can tell you, everyone in washington, everyone following this case in the Legal Community is wondering who is person a, why was it important to be in contact with them or protect them, and why was this going on in the middle of a general election . Big questions. Big questions. What does it tell about you where the Mueller Investigation is going . Because President Trump always says, no collusion, no collusion. What i never hear him say is no Money Laundering. Fair. You dont hear that. Look, i think when you read the actual indictments of mr. Manafort and mr. Gates, and gates being rumored to plea and this information suggesting gates is already cooperating and thats why you had this dramatic lawyer charge yesterday, i think it does go to the overwhelming evidence against mr. Manafort, the accounts, the money, the Money Laundering that you mentioned allegedly is part of what funded this lawyers work. So all of that comes together to put enough pressure on Paul Manafort legally, and hes innocent until proven guilty, i always mention that in these cases, but legally, it puts enough pressure on him, if convicted, he would die in jail. This is putting a lot of heat on mr. Manafort. If there are things he knows about other people, the time to start having those conversations with mr. Mueller and others would seem to be now. Ari melber, thank you so much. Be sure to watch the beat with ari melber at 6 00 p. M. Eastern on msnbc. Who do you have on tonight, figuring out the movie coming out on Biggie Smalls murder . Right now i cant say theyre confirmed. Im banking on cardi b. We need to get to some breaking news. Nbc has confirmed some very sad news. Billy graham, a prominent, probably the most prominent evangelical pastor has died at the age of 99. That is a life well lived. Graham gave his final sermon four years ago when he was 95 years old. And moments ago, President Trump tweeted, the great billy graham is dead. There was nobody like him. He will be missed by christians and all religions. A very special man. Nbcs Brian Williams takes a look back at the life and legacy of billy graham. The answer to your sin today is jesus christ. Billy graham used to say all he ever wanted was to bear witness to the power of the gospel. What a tragedy it would be, i tell you, if you were not saved. He ended up becoming a legend. God can be trusted even when life seems at its darkest. As an evangelist, billy graham changed the way america talked to god and viewed god. A true civic pastor, he was confidant to 11 president s dating back to eisenhower. What is the trouble with the world . Our problem today with the hearts of individuals. For more than half a century, it always seemed as if billy graham was there to guide the nation and the world. At the time of our last interview in june of 2005, graham was 86 years old. He reflected on a lifetime of ministry. What are your worries about the world you leave behind . The world we leave behind is about like the world when i came into the world, just at the end of world war i. And the world was at each others throats at that time. And thousands were being killed. Today, they dont have a world war, but we do in terrorism. Mans heart is the same. The answer is still the same, the gospel of christ. The unwavering consistency of Billy Grahams mission and his message managed to smash through the political and Cultural Divide in america. Billy graham was one of the four lions of the 20th century. There was john paul ii, nelson mandela, ronald reagan, and billi billy graham. At one time and at one estimate, billy graham was seen in person by more people on earth than any other person alive. There is only one road to heaven. Is there any hope for you . Yes. He preached the gospel love to more than 210 Million People around the world. He reached millions more through books, radio, television, and the internet, harnessing the power of modern media and his own charismatic presence. I think america is in for the judgment of god unless we turn around and change our way of living. Billy graham seemed to be there for every crisis in this country, every major american moment. We have confused liberty and license and we are paying the awful price. We are a society poised on the brink of self destruction. His instincts sometimes failed him. He acknowledged he could have done more in the battle for civil rights. He was caught on tape in the Nixon White House making antisemitic remarks for which he later apologized. So often, his words were just what so Many Americans needed to hear, especially after 9 11. Why does god allow evil like this to take place . Perhaps that is what you are asking now. You may even be angry at god. I want to assure you that god understands these feelings that you may have. And at the age of 87, his resolve firm but his health failing, billy graham traveled to new orleans, seven months after hurricane katrina, for one last crusade, urging the people of that broken city to have faith. People like you are going to be the key to its progress, because what is needed is a moral and spiritual renewal. He was always, i think, following the command of jesus to be of good cheer. He was relentlessly optimistic about america, about faith, about people. I dont think well see his like again. Yes jesus loves me so enduring was that message that at the dedication of his library, no fewer than three former president s were there to acknowledge his legacy. I feel like ive been attending my own funeral. Li listening to all these speeches. I know they all meant it. But i feel terribly small and humbled by it all. Happy birthday the last time we saw him was at his starstudded 95th birthday. What would you like people like me to say about your mark here on earth . That i was faithful to his message, to gods message. I wanted to be faithful to the end, because i want the end to be as fine as the beginning. Brian williams, nbc news, new york. Certainly, certainly an extraordinary life. We say go back odbye to billy g 99 years old. Up next, the debate over gun control has taken different forms in different parts of the country. Stuffed with white meat chicken, crisp veggies, and a rich homemade gravy. Because snow days call for Marie Callenders. Welcome back. Im stephanie ruhle. The debate over gun control has taken different forms in different parts of the country. In a small town in missouri, a youth are you listening to me . A Youth Baseball Team has drawn serious backlash over its plan to raffle off an ar15, the same type of gun used in parkland, florida last week. That backlash has helped sell are you listening to me . Sell more raffle tickets. We sent nbcs garrett haake. Reporter parents in this town of 12,000 talked about about it with me reluctantly. What has the last few days been like here after this became somehow a National Story . Its given the community an opportunity to reflect on how we feel in the community and how to get perspectivive of te ivof th people outside the community feel. Reporter outside the community, online fury of what a local baseball coach thought up to raise money. Have his third graders sell raffle tickets to win an ar15. The teams coach came up with the idea before the killings in florida. But hes kept the fundraising going since. He declined to comment on nbc but wrote on facebook that gun raffles have been going on for years. Evil always has and always will exist. We call bs reporter that didnt stop the viral backlash reaching all the way to southern florida. I think that their continuing it is really disgusting, because after they found out that in seven minutes 17 people lost their lives because of that gun, that gun should be, like, banned. Reporter in neosho, the backlash had an unanticipated effect. It will want to make people participate even more. Reporter the citys mayor, who owns ar 15s himself, sees it as a potential boon for the baseball team. The biggest question people have is where can i buy tickets. Reporter the School District has no relation to the team. But theyre still getting threats. I think its been somewhat chaotic. Its caught us completely off guard. Reporter theyre trying to turn the events of the last week into a teachable moment. Our hearts here in the community go out to them simply because we do live in the same country. But the norms are completely different. Its extremely hard to validate why, you know, its different here. Reporter communities across the country now facing hard questions on guns. And with no agreement on the right answers. Garrett haake, msnbc, neosho, missouri. Well, these are strange times. Republican strategist noelle n p por is with me. The nra is active in a lot of races. I dont understand why, you know, anybody would not immediately move to get some sort of deep regulation or even a ban on the ar15. The semiautomatic is a special case study, because i dont really feel the need for it. I understand the argument, i do, on gun rights, to have a gun to protect yourself or to have a gun to do sporting, clays or hunting. I understand that argument. And i understand the Second Amendment. But i dont understand the purpose of the ar15. Think about the gun. Its a semiautomatic. Does big money and the gop understand . You talk to big donors every single day. Mmhmm. What do they think about this issue . Because money is what matters to politicians. And it seems when you talk about big money, its all about the nra and their contributions to these politicians. Honestly, the dialogue has changed, about maybe five years ago, it would have been, oh, you know, i cant believe this gun ban, we need to support the nra, d dadada. Its changed. The cling to the guns movement has kind of eroded over time, given 2012, sandy hook, then you have this, so much shooting. Its mainly the argument, stephanie, is mainly the bump stocks, the semiautomatic. Thats where it is. Okay. Then if the hang on to my gun movement has eroded, would it not be a tremendous win for President Trump to say, lets do something about bump stocks, lets do something about background checks, lets do something about age limits, and couldnt the nra say, you know what, maybe that works for us . People who detest President Trump would have to say, thanks. Number one, youre right, that is a win for President Trump if he does it. And what we are talking about earlier before the show started, if the nra would get on board with trump on some sort of a very deep regulation or a ban, let me tell you what that would do. In the midterms, that is going to save some of the republicans. Because i have a bad feeling in the midterms this is going to be a very big issue. And if a politician has taken money from the nra, there might be huge backlash. So in order to avoid that, stephanie, one of the things that they could do is Work Together and make everybody happy. This really isnt a democrat or republican issue. This is safety. You know, the nra knows about this. The nra back in 2012 put out a National School shield program, because they realized, when they were doing reports, that this is in 2012 65 of the schools had reported violent incidents in their school. So they already know that this exists. So they knew you had to protect students, that you had to protect the schools and have technical training, have some sort of a way that they can that the school can prohibit these and take out shooters. They already knew about this problem. Thats 2012. Fast forward it to here. Its ha the nra did come out in 2012 with the National Shield program. The other thing to look at is, lets look at the atf, alcohol, tobacco, and firearms and explosives agency. The nra said a while back they felt like that they needed to look at the ramifications for the bump stocks alone. And that they were asking for assistance with the atf to see if that complied with federal law. So thats another agency that we can take a look at on regulation as well. Wow. The nra decided to play ball, if they did that, that would be a home run for the president. Coming up, chief of staff john kelly, you remember him . We were talking about him possibly losing his job last week. Hes trying to revamp security clearances at the white house in the wake of the rob porter scandal. Welcome back, im stephanie ruhle, a power struggle reportedly escalating at the white house over information. Jared curb center frustrated and concerned white house chief of staff, john kelly is targeting him personally. The move comings after Domestic Abuse agriculturals surfaced against former staff secretary rob porter. Kelly now responding saying quote, as i told jared days ago i feel confident in his able to continue performing his duties including overseeing our israel lee powerful peace effort and serving with mexico. Everyone in the white house is grifl for these contributionings to furthering the president s agenda. No truth to any suggestion otherwise. Joining me, jeremy peters. A week ago we were talking about john kelly potentially resigning. During that from my reporting and most likely yours, jared and ivanka were certainly not on the side of john kelly. Is this john kelly paying back jared . I dont think its quite that tit for tat. I think that what this rob porter episode exposed was a glaring flaw in our National Security in which you have people who may not even be suitable for employment if the white house as john kelly eluded to in his memo the other day, who has access to the nations heavily guarded secrets. I think you have two things going on here, one is the National Security of aspect of what rob porter brought to the surface here and flaws in that system. And the other is this shakespeare yan like drama thats always played out at the warehouse with the president s soninlaw and daughter and top advisers. And john kelly is the latest senior white house official to get on the bad side of jared and ivanka. Its been reported that kelly doesnt like the way they conduct themselves in the white house. When ivanka comes to a meeting and goes, oh im going to pop in. And of course the daughter and the seasonal dont like that. Lets just say jared loss his clearance, couldnt we assume President Trump will give him any information he wants anyway . Yeah and thats another thing that feeds to be said. The president can classify anything he wants. If thats the case then who cares. The president will do waver he wants. Which he does. On a repeated basis. Its not clear to me that this is really all its cracked up to be, because ultimately donald trump is going to tell jared what donald trump want to tell jared. Is this just about saving face . Would it be humiliating for jared if he lost his security clearance . He hasnt been able to get one, that doesnt portray him in a most positive way because it raises all sorts of questions about what type of blackmail he may be susceptible to. Has the reason people are denied security clearances because theres something in their back fwround that will allow a important power to bribe them so you dont know. But none of this is new news. Every day we talk about this is unprecedented, this could lead to that and the white house smiles and go uhhuh. And thats where kelly stepped in to try to be the adult in the room and be the steadier hand here and try to fix this glaring loophole. That argue worked for a long time and we believe john kelly was there as a steady hand until of course we found out he was protecting and covering up for a guy who potentially beat up more than one woman. Uhhuh. And i think thats right and thats why going back to our original conversation here, stephanie. Its why his job is now in jeopardy. Ofany reason to believe that his depart from the white house is imminent. Hes clearly trying to fix some of the problems that this rob situation brought to the fore. President trump like to let these situations linger because hes not of direct confrontation. Look at what happened with steve bannon, Reince Priebus and all these aids weve known have had half a foot out the door who stayed for months and months at a time. The question is not only is john kelly really in as bad of a situation as we think he is, is it that no one else want that job . Thats an exaggeration. I cant imagine who would want that job. You and i could say, i wouldnt want to have that job. Lets be honest, this is the chief of staff to the president of the united states, theres a lot of people who want that job, we just may not know them personally. Okay, how about this though, i dont know that trump wants to fill it. What ive heard in recent days this could be a place where john kelly goes and trump doesnt appoint a chief of staff. Really hes going to do whatever he wants anyway. He doesnt like being told what to do, he doesnt like the perception he has to have his hand held or his words and though thoughts edited by an adult in the room. Yeah my kids dont want a babysitter either. Phone wants that in the white house. All right. Thank you so much for joining me today i appreciate it. Thank you. And you know how im going to end the show because no matter what i believe theres always good news somewhere. I like to end on a high note and we think good news rules. You might remember mauri cope knee, the 10yearold, better known as little miss flint. Shes the one that made headlines but encouraging then president obama to visit her city during the water crisis ten years ago. Well shes back in the news. She raised 16 16,000 to rent out a theater to kids could see the movie black panther. That wraps up this hour, im stephanie ruhle, ill see you again in the morning. Coming up more knew with my friend halle jackson. And as i learned yesterday halle, it makes people feel good to start with a hello in the morning. So hello my friend. Hello. I agree on that picture you just showed. You stole it, thats the one that we were going to use, so now i have to in the next 60 minutes rewrite our big picture. I love that story, thank you steph. Today were talking about something much more serious here at the white house. The gun debate centering on the west wing with donald trump set to come face to face with parents and kids killed in school shooters. And also some survivors headed here to washington and tallahassee. Well talk about what that could really mean. Plus that security clearance crack down. New rules about to go into effect. What does that mean with Jared Kushner who still does not have his permanent clearance. Foreign policy and a secret meeting between the Vice President and koreans that was scrapped at the last minute. Remembering billy graham. The pastor to president s going back to harry truman. Much more on the life and death of graham and part of my conversation with his son about s
