Urging congress and the president to act. Now is the time to get on right side of this. We begin today with the growing gap between President Trump and members of his cabinet and his party, all of whom say it is now clear russia did interfere in our election. President trump, however, spent the weekend going after everyone from the democrats to the fbi to Oprah Winfrey. Vladimir putin was not mentioned once, which makes one wonder why. I got a great team here to break it all down. Lets start with nbc White House Correspondent kristen welker. I want to ask you what this says about the president s frame of mind, looking all of these tweets, what does it say about how hes thinking about the russian story and that indictment on friday in particular . Hi, david, well, good morning to you. It is clear this issue is increasingly getting under the president s skin. Its clear his frustration is boiling over. We saw hi, as you just said, play the blame game throughout the weekend, tweeting, blaming everyone, with the exception of Vladimir Putin actually. He lashed out at former president obama, saying that he did nothing to thwart the threat from russia. He lashed out at the fbi, even accusing them of failing to see warning signs when it came to the Florida Shooter because they were too obsessed with russia meddling. He even undercut his own security adviser h. R. Mcmaster who did speak out about those 13 indictments over the weekend. The president effectively accusing h. R. Mcmaster of not being tough enough to defend the president in his public comments, but the big question this morning, david, as we begin this new week, is what actions if any will this administration take in retaliation . The president didnt mention any in those series of tweets. Will there be new sanctions . We know congress did enact new sanctions. The president has yet to actually impose them. Overnight, a secretary of state, rex tillerson, indicating they are considering the possibility of some sanctions on individuals, but so far, its not clear what next steps this administration will take. Deputy press secretary shah was pressed about this earlier today. Take a listen. I wont get ahead of what the president is prepared to announce, but i wouldnt for one second say that his Foreign Policy has not been effective. We will continue to call out russia. Look, relations with russia are in a tough place. These election meddling efforts have a lot to do with it. Now, the president overnight tweeting not about russian meddling but about Oprah Winfrey. Take a look at this tweet. Raised a lot of eyebrows. He says, just watched a very insecure Oprah Winfrey who at one point i knew very well, interview a panel of people on 60 minutes. The questions were biased and slanted. The facts incorrect. Hope oprah runs so she can be exposed and defeated just like all of the others. Now, of course, Oprah Winfrey sparked a lot of buzz about a potential 2020 run after she gave that impassioned speech at the golden globes, but she has said shes not interested. He hasnt been on the golf caught out of respect to the victims in florida, but he has clearly been watching cable tv, watching all of the news coverage, growing increasingly frustrated. That may be at the root of that tweet storm that we saw, david. Kristen, thank you very much. Kristen well keker at the white house. I want to bring in my political panel. Seth waxman is now a partner at the law firm dickinson wright. Jonathan, let me start with you, and just get your reaction to what we saw here over the weekend. This tweet storm, this flurry of official statements from the president of the United States. The diversity of things he was talking about. Theres the quantity, the relentlessness of the tweets from the president . Even for trump, this is a remarkable shower of tweets that were falling on us over the weekend. Whats going on here is the president s trying very hard to convince people there was no connection between his campaign and russian. Number two, other people are responsible. President obama for not having countered russians measures during the election and number three, trying to detract in some ways, even going after his own National Security adviser h. R. Mcmaster. I think what we ought to take from the indictment is exactly what they say, there was basically a sophisticated operation going on to try to thwart Hillary Clinton and it does not make the connection between collusion between the campaign and russians. But what it does show, incontrovertibly, except to the perhaps president , that russia was trying to meddle in the election. Let me ask you about one. Kristen welker mentioned the commentary about his National Security adviser. Many Foreign Policy experts were in munich for the munich security conference. If it was the goal of russia to create discord and chaos within the u. S. , then with all the Committee Hearings and party hatr hatred, they have succeeded beyond their wildest dreamings. Theyre laughing their asses off in moscow, get smart, america. What do you make of the tweet he fired off . They are laughing, but Donald Trumps tweet i think is disingenuous and ignores the fact that he is a part of their efforts in the United States. Now, some may say we dont know hes in the ad or if there was exact collaboration between the two. But listen, in other countries where the russians engage and try to influence elections, they always pick a candidate, and that candidate carries their message. The message of their internet operations and other Information Warfare activities. Hes part of it. Yes, they are doing what he described. He is part of that activity. The jump off was the indictment handed up by mueller and his team on friday. Deputy attorney general rosenstein commented on that. Let ace listen to what he had to say. Theres no allegation in this indictment that any american was a knowing participant in this illegal activity. Theres no allegation in the indictment that the charged comment influenced the outcome. The president maintaining what this indictment does is clears him of allegations, talking just a moment ago, contrasts with what we heard over the weekend from the president . The president s comments that this somehow exonerates him, that just doesnt carry any weight at all. He is this indictment came down. It puts in the allegations of the investigations of a wideranging conspiracy. The question it raises for me as a former federal prosecutor, why is it trump continues to not take action about russia or Vladimir Putin when anybody else hell attack . The thing that stands out to me, maybe because hes a coconspirator with the russians. That its some indication of consciousness of guilt. When theres honor among theyves atheyve thieves and you know your coconspirator has it on you. Thats why sally yates went to the Transition Team and outed michael flynn. Is it possible, like michael flynn, that the president of the United States is somehow compromised . Evan, jump in here. Theres a clarion call for the white house to do more, at the very least, to acknowledge what we know, that russia did play this role, sowing discord within the u. S. Political landscape. Whats your prescription for what the white house should do and whats your sense of why the white house hasnt done more . What the white house needs to do is implement the sanctions passed overwhelmingly and in a bipartisan manner in congress. They simply need to do that. We cannot effectively thwart these attacks, we have to deter them. Some day we may get to the point where we can thwart them. We have to deter them. Thats the most efficient way. We have to get beyond in the country this idea, this hope, starting place of looking at the president as a traditional president and expecting him to do traditional president ial things. This is a president who has some reason why he wont implement sanctions. Why even when this overwhelming evidence, they did interfere in our election. He still wont do anything about it. Or speak about it much. Or speak against russia in that sense. Theres a reason for that. We have to now assume this president is on board with them, and we have to start taking actions as a people, especially visavis election, to assure elections remain free and face especially in the midterms, and in my view, we elect senators to congress who will hold the president accountable and protect our democracy. Jonathan, hows this playing within the Republican Party . Whats your sense of how these tweets are ringing out on capitol hill . He has his supporters in congress. A clack of supporters. Whats your sense of what they make of what the president tweet heard . Friday was such a watershed day. They have to worry about what the president is saying in the narrative he has put out there, first on the idea russia didnt interfere, which he maintained for a long time. Second, theres no collusion between anybody within the trump orbit and the russians. I think what youll see and have seen already is a lot of republicans, including someone in the white house, quickly distancing themselves from the idea there was no meddling at all and starting to call for more action against russia and you see that everywhere from rob portman, the senator from ohio, to some of what youve seen from some of his more conservative colleagues. So i think thats the big thing. The other thing to remember here, david, at this point, with the indictments that weve seen, youve either got the president of the United States being essentially an unwitting tool of a russian conspiracy to elect him or perhaps a witting tool. From a political perspective, neither one of those are good. Very quickly here, seth, each of these tweets is extraordinary in its own way. Let me read one about the fbi which is particularly extraordinary. Very sad that the fbi missed all the many signals sent out by the Florida School shooter. This is not acceptable. Theyre spending too much time trying to prove russian collusion with the trump campaign. There is no collusion. Get back to the basics and make us all proud. Well talk more about that in a bit. I want to ask you from a legal perspective about that call to action at the end of the tweet. What do you make as a lawyer . His call to employees of the fbi . Well, i mean, i think its offensive. The idea that the fbi cant walk and chew gum at the same time, it holds no water. The fbi has various divisions. There are Health Care Fraud teams. Other heaps of teams. Counterintelligence teams. Theres a set group of fbi agents focused on the russia investigation. The notion that their work somehow impeded or impacted the terrible events in florida, theyre just entirely unconnected events. For the president to kind of take aim at that particular subject matter clearly in an attempt to bolster his own position is disappointing to say the least. Seth waxman, thank you all very much. A weekend full of tears and funerals spur action as parkland students seize control of their own tragedy, defiantly saying this time well be different. Thats emma gonzalez, shes just one of the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in parkland, florida, demanding lawmakers take action in the wake of last weeks deadly shooting at her high school. They will gather for the funerals of two more of the 17 People Killed in that massacre. Nbcs Tammy Leitner is live in parkland, florida. What do students say about what they plan to do . Whats the action they plan to take . Hey, david, theyre taking that grief and theyre turning it into something positive. And you can see how much grief this community has. Take a look at this memorial. Its been growing over the weekend. Thousands and thousands of people have been coming out here to pay their respects. Some from this community. Some from other communities. All of them wanting to pay their respects to the 17 people who have died. Now, there are a number of events today, including in d. C. , a liein. A protest planned out in los angeles. You have to keep in mind there were a lot of vigils, a lot of protests over the weekend, but one week ago, all of these were just normal high school students. They were worried about tests. They were worried about going out on dates. They were worried about sporting events. Now they have become outspoke and and en advocates for gun control laws. We heard more attempts here to raise awareness of what he was like, what his behavior was like, ahead of shooting. We now have a Mental Health report that shows that crisis counselors visited nikolas cruz in 2016. Theres a video on snapchat of him cutting himself and threatening to buy a gun. Those crisis counselors spoke with his adoptive mother. She said he suffers from depression and adhd but he does take medication to control it. They also checked with a School Counselor who said she is extremely concerned. At the time, they decided he was stable and did not need to be hospitalized. Tammy, thank you very much. Joining me now here in new york, a republican strastrategist, the are though author of the book branding america. We hear from the president he is open to there being more robust or different background checks when it comes to guns. You look at his history. Theres some plasticity there. Hes changed his view on gun policy over the years. What does that say to you . Hes willing to entertain or engage in changes with the background check in particular . It says hes will to start a dialogue on it. And really to go a step further, to go beyond donald trump in this whole shebang, look at the nra. When you look at the nra, look back at 2013 when they implemented the National School shield, which is a program in 2013 that they implemented to get schools to, you know, implement tactic training. Teaching them how to make a school zone more safe. In the 2013 facts i found on this the nra put out, in 2013, 65 of schools reported having a violent incident, whether it was violence against a certain teacher, whatever it was. But 65 . That was 2013. Now fast forward to 2018, i bet that i bet that those numbers would go even further up. Which is interesting to me. So my thing of it is, yes, donald trump is open to a dialogue. Im a republican strategist. I deal with republican donors. There have been very many of my donors, a lot of them, that have said, you know, enough is enough. I cannot stand that we you know, we dont have enough regulation on ways going on with gun control. You can do legislation. You can do this. While keeping the second amendment. There is a way to do this in a reasonable fashion. I think what a lot of republicans, we get branded with the fact that we that, you know, you cant take our goods, are clinging to our guns. That is not the feel. At least not the feel im hearing from our top donors. Races are affected by donations. If they dont have the money to get their message out, they stand a chance of using the election. We have a president here who is willing to engage in dialogue, as noel says. Thats not the kind of action you hear students calling for. They want more to happen. They want concrete steps to be taken. What is different in your estimation this time around . Nothing. The only difference is weve got kids who are talking and theyre still part of the news cycle. That is novel. Weve got 13, 14, 15. We have kids who are eloquent who are outspoken who are saying were not just going to cry and be ignored. That is keeping the story in the press. That is putting pressure on politicians which is a good thing. I dont have a lot of optimism in thinking things are going to happen. Its not because Nothing Happened after sandy hook. Steve scalice got shot at a congressional baseball game and Nothing Happened. Steve scalice himself has come out and pretty much said look, i think the gun laws we have are fairly sound the way they are. I dont have a lot of belief that any of this is going to lead to substantive change and it should. I want to add this. Even when you talk about the stuffer, the training that happens in schools. Im a college professor, okay. I have received active shooter training. It still doesnt change the fact if someone really wanted to kill me, theyre going to get there because they can get access to the guns and theres no amount of training i can do. How important is the money in all of this . We talked about the nra and the lobbying might that it has. Youve got this big republican donor saying hes going to withhold money until theres an assault weapons ban. Is that going to be the Pressure Point . Its huge. When i work in active races, i work in races, and they spend about 80 of their time on the phones raising money. We have, you know, candidate stops, we have rallies, we have meet and greets. But what takes, you know, what rules everything and thats the money. Because if you dont raise the money, you cannot get your message out. Unless you have great name ideas. Unless you are michael bloomberg. Unless youre Hillary Clinton. So they need the money. So you choke the money off. What are they going to do . I want to ask you lastly about how politicians are reacting to what happened. Let me just read again from that tweet from the president about the fbi and the shooting. Very sad that the fbi missed the many signals sent out by the Florida School shooter. Theyre spending too much time trying to prove russia collusion with the trump campaign. Get back to the basics and make us all proud. That tweet infuriating a lot of people. Morgan williams, a 16yearold student at that high school, tweeting, oh, my god, 17 of my classmates and friends are gone and you have the audacity to make this about russia . Have a damn heart, she continues. You can keep all your fake and meaningless thoughts and prayers. Carly, a senior at the school, tweeting, you know what isnt acceptable, blaming everyone but the shooter and the lack of gun control in our country. You even blame the students. We did report him. We tried. How are we supposed to know what will happen . Your lack of sympathy proves how pitiful a person you are. You have a president at maralago right now. Hes visited with first responders. The white house said he met with some of the families of victims . What do you make about what do you make of the role hes played as a consoler, as somebody who supposed to help us move on from the tragedy . His response is disgusting. His First Response was, you know, the family, people should have warned more people, et cetera, et cetera. Hes made it about him. Hes made it about the fbi. Hes made it about russia. Hes continued to insult the fbi. The fbi is not x files, its not two people. Theres lots of different people who work there. Its not because theyre working on russia theyre incapable of responding to these types of attacks. You had 39something calls to this kids house. He still bought the guns legally. The laws in place cant stop someone like this if they dont have a criminal record. You cant say people with depression cant buy guns. It needs a law change, not the president blaming 20 other people. Jason johnson, thank you both very much. Up next, after fridays startling indictments, why is the white house still refusing to impose russian sanctions that had bipartisan support in congress . That film has quickly become the top grossing film in history by an africanamerican director and featuring a predominantly africanamerican cast. Well, calls for russia sanctions to be enforced are getting louder after the latest indictments. Here is democratic congressman ted liu. This is serious and best way to respond is first of all impose the bipartisan congressional sanctions that congress passed. President trump has yet to do that. Instead, hes launched a series of desperate unhinged tweets. Edward monnen is back with me. We talked a little about this at the top of the show. You said sanctions are important here. How does what happened on friday that indictment, all that it details, being handed up to the justice department, what does that do to change this conversation about sanctions . Well, i think first of all it makes much more tangible what the russians did and the russia investigation to the american people. I mean, in the past, we sort of had a declassified report from the intelligence agencies that said russia did this to us. But it didnt go into that much detail about how, especially not details that most persamericans they dont come from that background, can get their heads around. The indictment paperwork details tactics that americans can understand. They can understand social media and how you could use social media to manipulate people and what trolls are doing. Because we all see them online every day. And so it makes it much more tangible. I think, you know, i think it makes it harder for the president to push back, to say that its all a hoax. It makes it harder for him to fire mueller or rosenstein, although i still think theyre at risk. But it does change the conversations for that purpose, for those purposes. Ill ask you about the white houses response to this. Evan talks about how loosely the case is laid out in that indictment. We dont have a lucid explanation from this president about why these sanctions havent been implemented. You heard ted lieu there. Right, the pressure is really on for the white house and donald trump to impose sanctions. Ill tell you why. The world is watching. Because if were weak on that, they are meddled in our elections, you know, he is, you know, mueller has found 13 people that did it. This sends a signal to the world of meh, go ahead, were not going to do anything about it. This was huge. And while some people say it didnt affect the election, whats going to happen next time when it does affect the election and weve got midterms coming up . This is not a laughable matter. You can look at it as, you know, something in the United States, but other countries are watching. And theyre wanting to say, what is the punishment for meddling in the u. S. Elections . So we better do something about it. And im not concerned about what the president s tweeting as much as i am his actions. Whats he going to do . Is he going to implement sanctions . And the second part of it, are the sanctions going to be Strong Enough to, you know, get the attention of the world . Jason, lets stick with this. The crucible for this conversation has been this munich security conference. We heard from sergei kislyak, the former ambassador to the u. S. The kremlin released this statement about the indictment. There are no indications that the russian state could have any involvement in this. Whats the messaging, to take noels point here, of whos being called out and who isnt here . The president not calling russia out. Thats a long resounding message worldwide. Russia basically said yes, we did it, were going to lie about it, it doesnt matter what america says. Were going to keep doing this to every single country we can get our hands on. The United States is incapable of doing anything about it. This is what makes this dangerous. Everyone does this. I think its always the United States manipulates elections. The british manipulates. Everybody does this. The level that the russians are going to in america is where it becomes a problem. When you start making fake pay pal accounts and getting into Identity Theft in order to promote one candidate or another, thats when it gets dangerous. Thats when, look, all it does is send the right email to somebody in the middle of indiana and suddenly a Congress Person loses 50,000 votes because those people werent in the right district. For the president to basically say i guess i believe putin and were not going to do anything, it endangers our democracy. Jason, noel, thanks very much. The russia investigation causing political ripple effects around the world not just for the president. Could republican efforts to downplay russian meddling in 2016 cost them their majority . 2018 . Jason, let me just ask you how much this matterings. Were focused on it. When you get down to districts around the country, how closely are voters paying attention to all the twists and turns of the Mueller Investigation . Nobody cares at all . Yes. But im in ohio. When im in florida, when im in georgia, this is not what people are concerned about. I say this as a political scientist. Ive said this multiple times. The generic ballot is kind of garbage. At the end of the day, what actually matters is what happens on election day. Asking people in a general sense what they think they might possibly vote for with no concern about what the nuances are state by state by state. Its not a particularly good predictive measure. Heres the measure that actually matters. 36 to 4. Democrats have flipped 36 seats in special elections since 2017. The polling may not reflect that now but thats how people are feeling. If youre willing to go out and vote for dog catcher in the middle of november because youre that mad at donald trump, that is what republicans and democrats are concerned about. I dont think russia is going to matter. There are plenty of people saying they should care, americans need to care about this. A lot of people, theyre not pocketbook issue, as we were talking about early. People are getting their kids ready for school. Theyre thinking about what theyre going to do on the weekend. Theyre talking about the game, you know, theyre looking at taxes. They may be concerned, you know, about things that affect them in their household. But theyre not thinking about russia. Theres a couple of reasons why. Yes, they understand about the meddling. They dont like it. Theyre upset about it. Theres been so much information, information overload, they havent kept up with it. Im in politics. So im everyday looking, looking, looking. But the average american has got things to do. You have a small amount of time. What do you want to focus on when you watch the tv . I want to hear about these jobs or boeing bringing money back or whats going on. When it gets into russia, youre like, ehh, kind of fade out. We know they meddle. That we know. We know heres the outcome of the election. We know theyve got the potential to do it. We are aware of the ad in publications that we saw on google, on facebook, on twitter, and whatnot. But, you know, as far as being angry, i dont put it this way, ive never had a donor say, all right, how does your candidate where does he stand on russia, whats going on . They dont ask. They ask me about taxes and so forth. Theres something fundamental here. If im going to vote on a pocketbook or a wallet issue in my case, i want that vote to count. I want to know my vote is going to be counted properly. When you look at that indictment, ive got to imagine theres a lot of people, these unwitting americans cited in that document who feel like i was played in this election. Wont that have a profound effect, just the way people look at our electoral process . Yes, i think so. I think this indictment of 13 russians does start to move the ball forward in helping americans understand why this is such an important issue. But i think there needs to be more. I think jason and noel are right. Im sad to say it. If you travel around america and in the middle of america, people are not as focused on this as i think they need to be. For understandable reasons though. This is something thats very new. We havent faced this kind of challenge in america before, this scale. They are people are worried about getting their kids to school and through school and making sure bills are paid on time. They expect their leaders to lead and take care of problems like this. But on the republican side, you have most leaders telling their people for a while this is a nothing burger. So they tend to believe that. They see on fox news this is nothing. Theyre being told its nothing. But what will change things is if mueller delivers an indictment of someone in trumps team that is as detailed as this indictment of 13 russians. If he then delivers an impeachment referral to congress, then i think people do Pay Attention to this and realize this is a serious issue and our republican defends on our defending ourselves against this weve got about a minute left. Are guns going doing an issue . One other thing i want to say about this voting in polls and voting integrity thats important, this is not new. We had black box voting. We had books in the mid2000s talking about Voting Machines and how they can be hacked and most americans ignored it then. Minorities, students, african americans, they know their votes have been suppressed. A lot of it is which constituents feel their votes are protected. I think all of that plays a role in how seriously people take russia. On the issue of suppression when youve got these rallies being organized about woke voters, the grassroots chapter, whatever, what does that mean for minority voters . At some point, people have to start looking at many of the africanamericans who are saying, haey, i want to vote fo jill stein or dont vote at all. Theres questions in the black community of how much this was. The russians have a long history of trying to influence africanamerican rights movements. Thank you very much, appreciate it. We turn now to our made in the usa series, changed the lives of military spouses across the country. 2011, lisa bradley and cameron cruz struggled to keep a job when they moved with their husband across each military base. So they created a job as they moved. Lets start with the genesis, the very beginning here. What was that conversation like, why was that something you guys decided to pursue . Yeah it did, lisa and i met when that you are husbanded were stationed in georgia. We were overeducated and underemployed. We needed something for our families and other spouses needed the same thing. The project from the very beginning was not just from you too, you thought about how to make something people across the country could participate in. How did you come up with that idea . We started the company with the two of us but the idea from the beginning was a network of military spouses. I moved so many times at the age of 24. So many military was were in the same condition. So it began, we call them riveters, they the leather at home during that time whenever it worked best for them, then they shipped those parts to us from carolina and we spend them out to our customers. Let me ask you about the made in usa part of this. Why was that so important from the get go and how many times did you have to do that . More than handmade is part of our name. We as military spouses took a lot of challenges and turned them into opportunities. I think thats the same to be said for the mid american movement. Everything whos struggling to provide that for their families, it was everything for us. Ws we make all our products here in america, were providing jobs for military spouses and military spouses are making them. Doesnt get more american than that. Lisa, let me ask you about the challenge of growing this company. You got mark cuban involved you were on shark tank, whats the biggest hurdle been . I think taking those challenges and turning them into opportunities where modest military families which started the company at 2,000 each. Were growing the company handbag by handbag, its kind of one step at a time. I think the key is that you can still have a dream and make something for people here in america. Cameron, on the business side of this, talk more about the vibrancy of the community, you engaging with other spouses like yourselves. Whats that been like . Do you guys share other experiences . Whats the relationship aside from the business . Our team is everything for us. The reason we started this company was for our team, other military shows. Lisa and i were talking about this before the show, when you marry into military its independent. So we wanted to make sure we have something for ourselves, people can claim this community and we can all be there for each other. Lisa, how important has that community been for you . Its everything. Its able to plug into something bigger. Im proud of my husband and miss military service but we wanted to be able to be apart of this country as well. I know my kids can look back and say mom and dad did something great for this country. Thanks guys very much. Coming up the krim land pushing back hard. Live to russia with richard engle.
