The grahamcassidy bill was not the answer. Professional sports versus President Trump. Why . Guess what, sports, theyre not letting up, with a team owner taking a knee before the anthem with his team. Athletes from across the spectrum a speaking out. The people run this country, not one individual. Damn sure not him. Damn sure not him. No gas no food. Medical fly splosupplies runnin. This is puerto rico this morning. Well find out what fema is doing and what you can do. The goal is to get that road open before they run out of fuel. And which way does alabama go with the endorsement for the primary senator or with the guy who pulled a gun on stage. I believe in the second amendment. That wasnt a movie. We begin with a bit of legislative day have a geja vu. Three senators now saying they will vote no, meaning there is zero chance this bill gets 50 votes. Its all over, right . Not so fast. Maybe theyll do a little reconciliation changes. I have a great group, starting with garrett hake who has been working 24 7 on capitol hill. Will they even vote on this bill. Well have a better idea of that question after republicans meet for their weekly lunch today and hash this over. This is a zombie bill right now. Its dead. Its just shuffling around on capitol hill waiting for Republican Leaders to decide whether it will die in private or public. Susan collins yesterday joined john mccain and rand paul as the three republican no votes necessary to block this bill. It came after a day full of protests here on the hill. It came after the cbo said we cant tell you much about this bill. We can tell you a whole lot of people will lose coverage. It came after rand paul again called it fake repeal. These nos sound like pretty hard nos. Listen to john mccain and Susan Collins from yesterday, tell me if you think these sound like people who may change their votes. To make this kind of Sweeping Change and deep cut just does not make sense to me. Particularly without the benefit of going through the normal process. We ought go through the regular order. We should have legislation, hearings, witnesses, votes, and then to the floor. Votes. Were not doing that now. Reporter these are not problems that can be fixed by friday. And today well find out if more republican senators oppose this bill. Ted cruz has sort of eluded to the fact hes not satisfied with it. We have not heard from lisa murkowski. We could end up with more no votes in that column by the time that republican lunch starts this afternoon. I want to bring in an awesome panel today two msnbc contributors, republican strategist steve schmit and former democratic congressman from the state of tennessee, harold ford jr. Lets start with who loses here. In theory, i believe it was donald trump who ran for president and won. Repeal and replace is something he, along with other republicans, promised over and over again. Yet today he will successfully turn this as a fail for Mitch Mcconnell but not him. 100 . You know, look, its the greatest broken political promise in american history. Why people hate politics in this country is because these people voted 65 times to repeal it when they knew there was no chance of it actually being repealed. Then at exact moment when it could be repealed, voila, theres no actual plan to repeal it. Susan collins and john mccain are exactly right. No responsible legislator can conceive by vote for this and for sure there are a lot of problems with obamacare. But the reality is no one knows how much this costs. No one knows how many people it will affect. Nobody can articulate what it will do. It is a mishmash rushed nonsense legislation that affects 100 of the people in the country, onesixth of the u. S. Economy. You could hold a gun to their heads roy moores got one. He brought it last night. They could not tell you what it does. Why will this failure only hang on Mitch Mcconnell and gop leadership and not the president of the United States . He willhardest, the president , to make that case, but it will be hard. You come from the finance word, people on both sides said it would work, some on both sides said it wont. We watched obamacare interact with the markets and the team. A big part of it is working. A number of governors, democrats, republicans alike say this is working. Were providing more healthcare providing more assistance to people who did not have assistance beforehand. The smart thing would be to do what senator mccain said, go through regular order. Go through and see whats working and whats not working. The smart thing that john mccain said. Heres what President Trump had to say about john mccain. You look at mccain, what mccain has done is a tremendous slap in the face of the Republican Party. Tremendous. You can call it what you want. That is the only reason we dont have it because of john mccain. Nobody thought he was negative vote. Can you please help me with political strategy. You are a strategic guru. Im a Public School girl. How does attacking senator john mccain, a man fighting for his life, how is that a win for the president . Its not a win for the president. Hes literally alienated every group from the nfl to prisoners of war, that you could think to name in america. He is the great divider. Its not accidental. Its purposeful. He gets up every day. Every day, premeditatively, purposely, how do i divide the American People . How do i injected toxins into the body politic for the purposes of my political tran transactional benefit. Why does it work . Why do the American People fall for threeword slogans. I disagree that it works. The overwhelming majority of the American People stand united whether republicans or independents or democrats against this. You have 35 , 36 of country. What youre reacting to and its astounding, is how many people fall for it. Its a big number in a country of 350 Million People. We should never buy into the notion that this is a majority of the country that hes speaking to. When you look at the division that he injected into the country over the weekend, ovnliovnl i overwhelming majority of americans stand against it. The selling point for donald trump is that he was a business guy, bring Business People to work on tax reform. Some say the president is not working on it at all. Since healthcare is not going to go through, how will they address tax reform . And in the latest poll 51 of americans think the tax reform will help only the wealthy. How does that serve the president s base . It doesnt. The president seems to forget you need congress to get things done. You cant take your august vacation, criticize paul ryan and Mitch Mcconnell and then ask for them to work with you. Hes understanding what the beauty and majesty of the country is. We live in a country with checks and balances. He cant act as a dictator and get what he wants. How do you get tax reform . The same way he got hurricane relief, a debt ceiling increase, albei it, its temporary, you work with democrats. Even without him writing tax reform, its in the best interest. The one thing he did not put his fingers on, the president , other than writing the nomination, sending it over to congress, was neil gorsichs nomination. I got to get into one more thing before we go to break. Garrett haa kshgke, come on bac. We have to keep an eye on the house intel eligence committee. Thats where roger stone is testifying today. What do you know . Hes been Donald Trumps political svengali. His ties to the Republican Party go back to nixon. He has been Donald Trumps longest serving political adviser. He was a troll before troll was a word in our lexicon and before twitter was a thick ng we knew about. Its his m. O. To be the attack dog and the political consultant. The House Intelligence Committee is interested in him for a number of reasons. He bragged about having foreknowledge about things that wikileaks was releasing in the height of the campaign. Stone is here to eat this committee for breakfast. Hes been tweeting in advance of the moting. He posted a picture of him reading a book about rush sharks saying preparing for my house testimony tomorrow at 9 00 a. M. You are look at him arriving here. He said i will systematically go through the act words of every committee member. I will take their exact words and shove them down their throats. I will prove they have knowingly lied. This is a witness whos coming in with an agenda here today. Its worth noting that wikileaks tweeted something that they say, we have not verified this, that they say is roger stones opening statement. The mix of stone and wikileaks, russia, a closed hearing which hes laying out in those previous statements that he wants go after this committee, that could be an explosive mix here this morning. The greatest country in the world, this is what were doing what is your take on this . I know three things about the russian investigation. I know Vladimir Putin looked at our society and he intervened in our election. He purposely set out to try to divide the country. And he succeeded beyond his wildest imaginations getting the American People to turn on each other. Number one. Number two, 100 of the time, 100 of the people around donald trump have lied. Including donald trump. And have been found out very quickly thereafter about the connections to russia. We will find everything that happened. We will know with time. When we find out, i think its going to blow peoples minds. And i think that were on the edge of one of the great scandals in american history. Well see what happens. Lets let the special council do his work. Lets let the facts drive the process. Well see. But i know for sure from the president to the Vice President and on down the chain, you ask him a question about russia, they lie about it. Not 90 of the time, not 99 of the time, 100 of the time. Wow. Hope you dvrd that. You cant even follow that. I would just on the taxes, i knows there a number of people who hope they can do something on this. It would seem the president , if hes smart and politically cliffer thcliff clev clever, they would let some democratic votes get in. He cant get out of his own way. If he continues to make statements and inject himself in things he shouldnt, this presidency could continue in a downward spiral and you may even find more republicans and democrats in the congress leaving him as they move into the beginning of next year. Chaos ensues. Dont go anywhere. Breaking news just learned that the chairman and ceo of equifax is stepping down. Richard smith announcing his retirement. Extraordinary that he gets the benefit of calling it a retirement. Just moments af go after the massive data breach that exposed the personal information of nearly half of all americans. That information includes Social Security numbers, drivers licenses and credit card information. Ron insana joins me now. The word retirement, i got to tell you thashgt kills me. Retirement often means a gold watch, Cocktail Party and getting your pension. Yeah. I think we can safely as tsunami this is a forced retirement. I would doubt this is the type of thing that was voluntarily undertaken given the size of the data breach, the 143 Million People who had their private information effectively stolen by hackers. This is not type of thing that one walks away from voluntarily. Corporations have a habit of putting the best face on events like these. I cant imagine he just stepped down because the board said, you know, sure, its time for you to retire. This story is not going aing any time soon. Again, Senior Management didnt know, why didnt they . The cfo, come on. Just one day after reports that Jared Kushner used a private email account to discuss government business, new reports that more white house advisers also used private accounts. And the president unleashing a new tirade of tweets against the nfl. My question to you, why . The owner of the cowboys, jerry jones, joins his team neiling to end an actionpacked weekend of football. Just like the people who own them, every business is different. But every one of those businesses will need legal help as they age and grow. Whether it be help starting your business, vendor contracts or employment agreements. Kevin, meet yourkeviner. Kevin Kevin Kevin KevinKevin Kevin Kevin kevin kevin trusted advice for life. Kevin, hows your mom . Life well planned. See what a Raymond JamesFinancial Advisor can do for you. Now we have this story about kushner and apparently others in the white house. Im waiting to see the outrage on the part of republican members of congress about this. You will not see it. Was Hillary Clinton referring to a New York Times report citing former and Current White House officials who say at least six of President Trumps closest advisers occasionally used private email for official white house business. Though advisers include Jared Kushner, steve bannon, reince priebus, gary cohn, steve miller and ivanka trump. The House Oversight committee is giving the white house two weeks to identify any official using private email addresses. Kristen welker has more whafr. Reporter as you pointed out, included on that list, ivanka trump. They say she was using private email occasionally before she was officially a staffer. On Jared Kushner, they say were talking about fewer than 100 emails. All those emails from his private serve wrer forwar were o his white house account. Sarah Huckabee Sanders said all Wh White House personnel have been instructed to use official email to conduct all government related work. They are further instructeded that if they receive work related communication, they are to forward that to the white house account. They say this is notlike Hillary Clinton using her private email server. When i pressed the white house on whether the emails contained classified information, no response. That may be something we drill down on today. A lot of folks crying foul. Hillary clinton saying where is the republican outrage about all of this . President trump may have a chance to respond to this. He will be holding a joint press conference later on today with the president of spain. The one thing the president doesnt do hes not an email guy. I want to bring my panel back. Whats your take on this. Theres nothing illegal. One could call it political malpractice. This administration doesnt mind hypocrisy. You answered the question. Secretary clinton has a point that you probably wont see a lot of the similar level of outrage. The real outrage she should be looking for is from the president himself. Does he want steve miller, bannon, priebus not there anymore, his soninlaw to explain why they used public email . I never thought Hillary Clintons email thing was as serious as people said. It will be curious to see if what happens, but i dont expect the president to address this in any meaningful way. People at white house said last night this is not a big deal. We had our old email address, people would say i liked seeing you on tv, this and that. I guess i come from a place where credibility doesnt reset every sunday night at 11 00point lead and that the bank account is full for them to squander it down to zero again in the forthcoming week. The hypocrisy is astounding so is the dishonesty. What we know for sure, with those representations made to you, not 99 of the time, 1 00 of the time they lie on issues from being to small, so well see. But once again, the hypocrisy is exposed. Well see. Well find out in the next coming weeks, its more than 100 emails. Its more than six people. And the ethical morass of this place, you look at the hotel in washington, d. C. , the problem frankly that we have is that in 24 hours in a day, we dont have enough time to cover all the dishonesty. To cover all the lies. To cover all ofhit hiypocrisy hypocrisies, es mresh especialle have life and death situations going on, with puerto rico. This goes to lie light ahighlig things they do that could be worse. This is why i cant understand why the president is waging an nfl war. Hes doubling down on his latest attack specifically at the nfl and players silently protesting, a practice weve seen in this country for decades. The latest tweet that the president fired off, just moments ago, said the nfl has all sorts of rules and regulations. The only way out for them is to set a rule that you cant kneel during our national anthem, this after a controversial monday night Football Game where the dallas cowboys, americas team, along with their owner, jerry jones, took a knee briefly before the national anthem, and they were met with boos. In a show of unity, the cowboys and cardinals stood arms locked with people owners during that anthem. I have to talk about this. The president has made this about patriotism. Youre with the flag or youre not. But that is not at all whats at stake here. Ill defer to you. You said it last night on twitter. You said hes hijacking our sacred symbol. Huit hurts my heart in a way dont know that i have the words for. I choose to stand for our National Symbol in silent reverence when it comes by. It hurts it pains me to see anyone on their knee. To have anyone sit. The greatest affront to that flag is what donald trump is doing. That flag stands for values. That are so powerful and strong. Even the desecration of the flag, even burning it, those values are so powerful they transcend that. Freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of expression. These core American Values that he attacks constantly, that he undermines. To see him try to hijack this symbol, to wrap himself in it for the purposes premeditatively, purposely of dividing the country is the most disgusting thing ive seen in my lifetime, in my 47 years. So i disagree with Colin Kaepernicks method, but i will defend to my dying breath his right to do it. Because that is why were a great country. You go to Arlington National cemetery, and you walk amidst those tombstones of the young men who have given in lincolns words the last full measure of devotion to this country, thats what they died for. That freedom of speech and expression what donald trump is doing here is as terrible a thing and maybe the most terrible thing that has ever been done to this country by a president of the United States. Despicable doesnt begin to describe it. Completely unnecessary. If there are rules that need to be added to nfl football. Lets talk about tackling hard, cte. This standup for patriotism is sort of like President Trump trying out new lines on the campaign trail, lock her up. But hes dividing team owners, companies. You have people out there saying to brands, where do you stand . I do want to buy your products . H why does the president do that to his own country . Throughout the campaign and before the campaign, the thing that got him going, he questioned whether or not obama was a citizen. Became an outspoken advocate for this birther movement. I think one of the reason you saw owners i could not take a knee. Thats not what i would do. People have every right to do what they choose. You cant write a rule or regulation to mroef someoremove First Amendment rights. When he calls those athletes who did that, those sons of bs, theres a band of brothers in this locker room, were all here. Then he said owners, you should fire them. They said we will stand for the men who make us money every sunday. Its also a peaceful expression. He called the young men and women in clarksville good young men and women. Peace thifully taking a knee. At the same time the way he went about doing it, i think theres some other elements here with this president. He reminds us that of the ugliness of his campaign, and the revoting nature of how he approached charlottesville when not given one or two chances, but Three Chances to repudiate the kind of behavior that we saw. Not only did he not do that, he was able to generate a positive response and tweet from david duke. The grand wizard of the ku klux klan, in case you dont know who that is. The lowest moment of this presidency, in my lifetime the lowest moment of any presidency, seeing a president of the United States not denounce the compliment he received from the former grand wizard of the kkk. Not only did he not denounce it, right before david duke said this president better look in the mirror and remember who put him in office. This president allowed both those comments to go unresponded to. Now he continues to attack nfl playe players, steph curry and basketball players. It reinforces the worst impressio impressions. Its not a surprise. It reminds us of the hate we saw, how the president came to be on the campaign trail. That being the case, how does gop leadership stand with him . I mean, look, they stand with him at this point because theyre cowards. I dont know what else to say as they watch the degradations to our flag, to our system, to the constitution. Those that wont stand up and fight back, i dont have a word to describe my contempt for them. I want to be clear about something. Saw a handsome young man on tv, an nfl player, he got a little bit jammed up when the reporter asked him a question. Is he a racist . He didnt want to say it. So let me say it. I want to help him out. Hes a racist. You look at that speech in alabama to an allwhite crowd, we need to get real about this. The president of the United States goes down there, talks about us, and those people. He came as close as you could possibly come to shouting at a rally the n word. Thats what he did down there. I know it. You know it. Harold knows it we all know it. For the Republican Party, and its leaders, for every decent american, were coming up on the line where enough is enough with this. What hes doing to the country is tragic. The resilience of the country and the eloquence of lebron james, god bless him he called the president a bum. Well, he did. He also said a lot of other things. What lebron has right about this is this its not his flag. Its my flag. Its our flag. That flag stands for the soldier and for the protester. We all live under its magnificence. It is the most powerful symbol of the greatest ideals that have ever been put to paper by the mind of man. In all of human history. Were not a Perfect People or a perfect country. Our ideals are as near to perfect as can be. And to watch the assault on them every day from this president , what it will do in time, it will rally the American People. Rally a generation, and i dont care. Republicans, democrats, independents, lefthanded vegetarians, people will rally to the flag. Are we a racist nation . Why is america allowing the president to reframe this nonsense 35 approval on his best day. We need to stop pretending he won the majority of the people. He did not. He won by 78,000 votes across three states. This does not represented the majority of the American People. It doesnt. Your question is a legitimate one. I grieve would not have thought years ago after obama was elected and reelected this is where we would be as we talk about issues of culture, race, justice and injustice. Theres something to your question. I dont know the answer. Theres something to it. I want to talk about the 3. 5 Million People we cant forget. This morning thousands are trying to leave the island of puerto rico in the wake of devastating Hurricane Maria. Getting off the island is proving to be a grueling process. This is what the main airport looks like right now. Families spending days in the sweltering terminal without any resources, hoping to catch one of the few flights out of town. Gabe gutierrez is there. Many travelers here are desperate. Some have been here for days. Weve seen mothers sleeping on the floor with their children. It is hot. It is steamy. Theres no ac. Backup generator is keeping the lights on for about commercial flights a day. Now theres a concern this exodus could be a sign of things to come. Reporter this morning growing signs throughout puerto rico of crisis already ravaged by the most powerful hurricane to hit the island in decades, it could face a huge migration. Puerto ricans leaving whats left of their home and moving to the u. S. Mainland. Do you expect a mass exodus of Puerto Ricans to the u. S. Mainland . If conditions are inhospitable f we dont have the resources to rebuild properly, yes. This is going to cause a problem for puerto rico. Of course it will cause a problem for the mainland as well. Reporter all over the u. S. Territory these american citizens are struggling to survive no running water. Gas is scarce. They could be without power for months. These nighttime images from space show the island before Hurricane Maria and after. Most of the electric grid completely wiped out. Lester holt rode along with the National Guard flying into san juan with desperately needed supplies. People talk about how bad it is, you dont see it until you see it. Reporter overnight, President Trump tweeting because of its broken infrastructure and massive debt, puerto rico is in deep trouble. Much of the island was destroyed with billions of dollars owed to wall street and the banks which sadly must be dealt with. Well have a big problem whe. Reporter luis and his wife have temporarily moved from san juan to near sar sarasota, but theyre think being making it permanent unless there is massive aid to fix the devastation fast. People will not wait long. Reporter puerto rican ballooning debt crisis forced many people to leave over the last several years. About 500,000 over the past decade. Now there are concern thats widespread devastation from marie ka coum maria could speed up that process. With me is fema administrator brock long. I want to start with President Trumps tweets last night. Puerto ricos debt crisis has nothing to do with the hurricane of a category 4 or 5 wiping out this island. Just a few minutes ago, the president underneath the major disaster declaration approved 100 cost reimbursement for debris and Emergency Response for the next 180 days, so we can ensure people that money is not getting in the way of this response, the mission is taking care of people today. Thats the objectives that are clear. That means the money puerto rico needed to put up in order to get fema support is being waved . Were rolling. As ive been saying, we have never let money get in the way. Thats not the issue. Down the road we have a lot of work to do to make puerto rico resilient, i think absolutely so. You know, uns for tfortunately was one mile per hour away from being a category 5. It hit the power infrastructure, utilities, telecommunications, its incredibly fragile. Were paying the price for it. The federal government is putting all forces in a unified effort down through the governor to help these people. We have a long way to go. The bottom line is that we are laser focussed on fuel distribution. We have tankers going to 2 00 primary fuel distribution today with security. Were reinforcing security. There are isolated issues of crime. We have not lost security across puerto rico. Were putting eyes on all hospitals, making sure the hospitals are running. They have the Emergency Fuel to continue services. We also have a lot of commodities on site. People have to remember we were on the island before irma. We will pushed a ton of commodities on to the island, not only before, but also after irma in anticipation of maria, were backing that up. The capacity to get that out was diminished because many of the americans in puerto rico have also become victims so we have to inves forces to get things out. We are there. Were pushing forward. We have 16 ships currently supporting the effort with ten more coming over the next two days. So were pushing forward everything we got. You also tweeted last night that the media has not focused on maria. What is it were missing . Were trying to do everything we can. What story is believe we need t the bottom line is puerto rico is being treated like any other state. We cannot forget that the Virgin Islands was impacted heavily also by this event. There is misinformation that maybe were not taking this response seriously. Thats not the case. We are laser focused. These guys are working aroundtheclock. We are unified. We have great communication. Ive been in touch with the white house and the governor every day i was on the island yesterday to reconfirm and put boots on the ground. When it comes to the media, we need you to know that we are working our butts off to help the people of puerto rico. We sincerely appreciate it. We think about how hard youve been working over the last month. When you were there yesterday, did you get the sense that people want and are willing to stay in puerto rico . Many who weve spoken to have said as soon as they can get on a flight, reach a Family Member in the United States, theyll leave. They are u. S. Citizens. The United States could face 3. 5 Million People moving to texas, florida, here in new york. Obviously people are trying to get out of a bad situation to temporarily find a more stable situation. As we know. You know, Many Americans on the coast of the United States have friends and family who live in puerto rico. Some of that were starting to see. Heres what were doing. The air Traffic Control system into puerto rico was heavily damaged it prevents the amount of air crafted we can get into the airports. And we have to open up additional airports. We opened up roosevelt rose, we opened up another airport to make sure were utilizing two other airports to continue lifesafety missions and flights into so we can free up the commercial fright flights into rico. Is there a mass migration . I have not seen this that yet. I believe people in puerto rico want to be able to fix the situation that theyre in. They wanted to be there in their homes. Thats what were focused on. There will be a longterm housing Recovery Mission and a longterm how do we rebuild the power grid. You know, that discussion will come up to make a more Sustainable Future for puerto rico as well. Thank you very much. Quickly before we go. Many people are writing in asking how do they give if they want to support puerto rico . Thats another big issue. Right now i need people to go to the website, and one discussion im having with the governor, theres no a traditional point into puerto rico such as a governors relief fund. We are working with him now to build that website on his behalf. We are also because if we put one number out there, it will be flooded with calls. And probably ineffective. Were working with puerto rico to establish a touch point to flow people in. We need the whole Community Coming into puerto rico. Right now the best thing to do is invoad. Org. We have humanitarian efforts finding ways in. Were prioritizing that support as well. Thank you again for all that youre doing. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the u. S. Citizens in puerto rico. Up next. The war of words between President Trump and north korea continueds to escalate. Is a conflict with north korea inevitable or is it just the way these guys talk . Hi im joan lunden. A place for mom. You know your family we know Senior Living. Together well make the right choice. The effort to denuclearize the north Korean Peninsula is one that has been diplomatically led. Thats the goal to solve this diplomatically. I believe President Trump has been clear on this issue. That was secretary mattis insisting the u. S. Is doing everything it can to keep the standoff with north korea in the diplomatic realm as long as possible. North korea is increasing tensions, releasing a propaganda video with Computer Generated depictions of rocket attacks and describing trumps recent remarks as a declaration. I have ambassador wendy sherm wh an who worked as president clintons special adviser to north korea in the late 90s. How much hope do you have for a diplomatic solution given the last week . Its been a tough week. A couple things i want to make clung. Kim jongun is a brutal dictator, he treats his people terribly. His possession of Nuclear Weapons puts his country at risk. It does not protect his country. Secondly the administration has shown some positive steps in getting u. N. Security Council Resolutions and increasing unilateral sank shin sanctions korea what is not evident is a whole of government and whole of world strategy that is disciplined, thoughtful, that puts diplomacy together enforce. I was glad to hear from secretary mattis. I think hes trying to double down on diplomacy. We have that message undermine that message with his tough rhetoric. We are the big country. We are the powerful superpower of the world. This is a little country, north korea, with a dictator who is brutal. And what we ought to be doing is showing that we can be tough, we can be resilient, we know what were doing. We can work with allies and partners, but we do not have to resort to the bellicose bombastic language of kim jongun. Are we working with our allies and partners . If the argument is economic sanctions, putting that kind of pressure, starving them in terms of gas and banking resource will get them, then china would be our partner. Wilbur ross met with china and theyre at odds. Hes going after them on trade abuses. Theyre not on the same page. I agree with you. Part of this strategy is a deep dive with china to get them to enforce the sanctions. These are international sanctions. Those are not just u. S. Sanctions. China is responsible for most of the Economic Activity that north korea can able to havis able to. The president is expected to be in china in november after their 19th party congress. This will be top of mind, top of agenda. But look, stephanie, we are in a really tough place because miscalculation on anybodys part here could result in war. And i think secretary mattis was saying, we dont want to get there and we dont because it would be catastrophic. We had u. S. Bombers flying International Air space up near north korea, but obviously not over north korea. The North Koreans pushed back. And if we had an incident, as we had with china in ep3 incidents some years ago, we could have war as opposed to a diplomatic standdown that ultimately got solved with china. We could have a war with north korea. The president of the United States is waging war with the nfl. Think about that. Ambassador, thank you so much for joining me this morning, i appreciate it. And as we speak, the alabama republicans are casting ballots in their special election on the ballot. Senator Luther Strange and former Alabama Supreme Court judge roy moore. This primary fight has drawn National Attention and brought the president himself to alabama. And it has divided republicans in that state and nationwide. Nbcs Vaughan Hilliard is live in alabama. Vaughan, give us an update. Could roy moore take this . Reporter yeah, good morning, stephanie. Were outside of fair hope polling place here in southern alabama where down the road steve bannon appeared last night on stage for the challenger, the former chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, roy moore. To give you the idea of the dizziness creating down here, four hours north, while steve bannon was on stage, who was up with Luther Strange, the incumbent republican senator . Vice president mike pence. They were giving speeches for opposing candidates. Really the question tonight out of the primary is whether this could be the first whiff of what is to come in 2018 with senator jeff flake, dean helder out of nevada, and facing down potential primary opponents with the likes of steve bannon. Mitch mcconnell who funneled several millions of dollars into the super pac into this race, he is outspending roy moore 5 to 1 in this race. Theres a sense they are still backing donald trump, but at the same time they are also willing to bay roy moore here today despite donald trump going for Luther Strange. Why . They will have no spite for President Trump backing Luther Strange, but this is our own race and we dont need the outside influence to tell us who to vote for. To give you an idea, several of the polls out of alabama here have roy moore up by ten points. Doug jones next month will be coming out to appear for and will be facing off. But donald trump won alabama just last november by a twotoone margin. Roy moore pulled a pistol out on stage last night, think about that. Vaughan, thank you for joining me. Up next, the president has more for science and education, but is it enough for america to compete . Your big idea. Money, power, politics and girl power. Ivanka trump is speaking today. Donald trump just passed a 200 million bill to increase Stem Education fund iing. This memo is calling for 200 million towards education, is that enough . And what was the Previous Administration doing to support young girls . Its a start. I think any priority in Stem Education is critical for us, especially for girls in lowincome communities in which tech brick serves. As stated, these funds are coming without legislation needed. So we know they will get prioritized and moved forward which was a barrier in the obama administration. Ivanka is also expected to announce a private sector commitment. What does the private sector need to be doing today besides donating money . Yes, so this is more than just providing dollars. This is also about changing a culture. Making sure that our organizations are tech corporations and building environments where our girls, once they get there, can thrive and lead and excel in these companies. And really feel like they can contribute with their interests and their values and their experience in mind and part of the culture. Nicole, according to a white house memo, less than a quarter students who took the advanced placement exam in Computer Science in 2016 are girls. Why is there such a gap at this point . Well, a lot of the reason is because girls are not feeling like they belong. So society is telling them that girls are not part of the stem environment. That they have to be something theyre not. We know at tech bridge girls that girls want to utilize stem to change the world. They want to see stem aligned with their interests and their experiences. And when you have that disconnect, they continue to fall out of the pipeline and not be able to succeed because of the barriers that theyre against. Well, we are glad to hear that 200 million is going towards this and it is a start. Thank you so much for joining me this morning. I appreciate it. That is going to wrap this hour up for me. I will see you again at 11 00. Right now more news with hallie jackson. Stephanie ruhle, thank you so much. Republicans are 30 on health care, not quite the run they want to be on. Will Mitch Mcconnell force another vote or move on . And House Speaker ryan will step to this podium to take questions any minute. Well bring that to you live. And as prospects for health care seemed to go south, so are we, literally, to the deep south. Where the polls have open in the last little bit in alabama where theres a reasonoff and a republican rift. With our team live there this morning on why this is generating bigtime national interest. And to talk about this, we have the head of the Republican Party, Ronna Romney Mcdaniel is joining us later in the show. Then dont forget what is happening in puerto rico because hans nichols is embedded with u. S. Marines to fly out with concerns for a mass exodus of people leaving the island. Millions trying to escape with no food, water, electricity, no way to get in touch with the mainland and new questions about the president s response. As is the norm, we are looking at a busy 60 minutes on this network with kasie hunt on capitol hill to kick it off for us. Kasie, seems like this is shaping up to be a pretty difficult day for Mitch Mcconnell
