Talk about what . Bipartisan calls from congress, show us the tapes. If there are any tapes they have to be turned over. You cant be cute about tapes. Brand new video, look at this thing. Another Missile Launch by north korea. The country claims this one could carry a Nuclear Warhead. What were going to do is continue to tighten the screws. He feels it. He absolutely feels it. Did you hear me . I said Nuclear Warhead. We begin today with the big decision awaiting President Trump. Specifically, who will be in as the next fbi director and who may be out among his toplevel staff. I have a great team with me to break it down. Lets go first to Nbcs Kristen Welker at the white house. Lets go first to the new fbi director, where do we stand on the search . Well, we know there is a lot of urgency to name someone. The president himself indicating over the weekend that he wants this process to move quickly. Heres what we know, over the weekend, the department of justice interviewed eight candidates and they have the lead on this right now, attorney general Jeff Sessions and deputy a. G. Who is on that list . Andrew mccabe, of course, hes the acting fbi director, senator john cornyn, hes a republican from texas. Mike rogers, former house intelligence chairman, as well as Fran Townsend a Homeland Security adviser to president george w. Bush. A lot of names folks might be familiar with. What are some of the key components doj and white house officials will be thinking about as they make the decision. One, of course, has to do with credentials. The other part of this, is this politically is a thorny choice. So the president likely going to choose someone who wont necessarily be seen as a long time ally, because there was so much controversy surrounding the decision to fire fbi director james comey and then someone not too political that put someones like a senator john cornyn, potentially on the if category, if you will, stef, because the thinking is they want to choose someone whos going to be widely respected by Law Enforcement and someone who will be confirmed quite esly. This is a big, big choice. The question is will the president actually make it before he leaves on his big foreign trip on friday. That remains to be seen. We have to talk about the shake ja shakeup. More and more reporting theres infighting or stress in the west wing and a shakeup in the works. If the shakeup is as a result of the comey firing the only people who knew what was going on inside you have don mcgahn, you have Reince Priebus and you have jared and ivanka. Jared and ivanka theyre not going anywhere. Theyre not going anywhere. And we know the president wasnt happy with the way his press shop handled the announcement of the firing of the fbi director, so who could potentially be hurt by that . Obviously you have sean spicer whos the press secretary, hes been someone whos been at the center of questions about how long he may or may not stay in that position. We know that the president thinks that Sarah Huckabee sanders did a very good job when she stepped before the podium a number of times last week while sean was out fulfill something of his duty and then we also know that Reince Priebus, part of that messaging as well. But look heres what we know about this president , stef, this is someone who has gone through a series of kind of taking a hard look at his staff. Sometimes he gets upset, blows off steam and moves on. The question we have to keep in mind this time, is this yet another one of the instances. It is highly unlikely based on all of our reporting and conversations at the white house youre going to see a major shakeup again before that big foreign trip. Remember, the foreign trip could be a chance to reach the narrative here at the white house, stef. We know he said nice things about some people but he could change that tomorrow. I want to bring my panel in too. Msnbc contributors New York Daily News columnist mike lupica and eddie just joining us as an msnbc contributor and chairman of the center for africanamerican studies at princeton university. Now youre part of the family i want a delivery from hoegy hagan. I dont have to be that nice to you anymore. Youre in the family. Our white house unit says all signs are pointing to an ax is going to fall somewhere within this administration. I want to share what Rex Tillerson had to say on meet the press. I am devoted to helping the president achieve his objectives helping him be successful and i have to earn his confidence every day. Can we take a beat here. This is Rex Tillerson, okay. The guy was ceo of exxon. Worked there for 40 years. The top, Top Executive goes on tv, every day i have to earn the respect and love of the president. Whats going on . When Kellyanne Conway and sean do im here for the pleasure to please the always myy president , i get that. Rex tillerson, wilbur ross, i mean like mattis, mcmaster this what is they have to do at this point. I was watching him yesterday thinking this guy used to be one of the captains of industry and now looks like hes cutting a hostage tape and when you its true. And when you look at this situation, the lack of accountability on this president s part right now is almost breathtaking. Stef, its like in sports when you constantly hear people talk about an under achieving team. You finally say to yourself wait a second, who put together this under achieving team and whoever thought why do you have to talk about the New York Knicks like that. Whoever thought Reince Priebus was the end of the star search. Whoever thought sean spicer was the end of and bannon, oh, my god, the dark knight of gotham, what was he ever doing this close to the oval office in the first place. Okay. But when you talk about sean spicer and reince or steve bannon, you mentioned Rex Tillerson, a captain of industry, gary cohn, captain of industry are they really going to sit there this long while the president is saying time to get in line. It seems that thats the case. We know that Jeff Sessions is also on the hot seat by delivering his you know, the list of well let me say it this way reinstituting the war on drugs as it were, getting ahead of Jared Kushners criminal Justice Reform and apparently angered donald trump. The kind of displacement. Trump wants to say its his staff thats the problem when it seems to me and us that everything emanates from him. Hes the problem. I want to actually share what he said about his communication staff. Clearly they had a tough week. We were hard on them. I want to share what the president had to say. Sarah huckabee is a lovely, young woman. You know sean spicer. He is a wonderful human being. Hes a nice man. Is he your press secretary today and tomorrow . Hes doing a good job but he gets beat up. Will he be there tomorrow . Hes been there from the beginning. Thats not an answer, hes been there from the beginning. No matter who the press secretary is, are you screwed . The president keeps changing his tune. The fact they say i didnt speak to the president beforehand. Josh earnest said im not going to speaks to the president unless ive heard from the president. Yeah. And spicer taking the fall for a plan to fire comey that looked like it was conducted, you know, while there was an uber car waiting outside the white house, is preposterous. But in interview with judge janine, where he said theres so much going on up here, and its like the rest of hes got this idea that its difficult for the rest of us to keep up with him, starting with his own staff. Its an impossible job. You have to go out in front of the press and defend lies. President trump, we can keep up with you. One of the very few things lawmakers on both sides of the aisle seem to agree on these days, if President Trump did, in fact, tape conversations with james comey as he suggested, he needs to hand over those tapes. Nbcs Mike Viqueira is live on the hill. What is going on here . Yes, unprecedented, highly unlikely for a president to do Something Like this. We know that we elected someone highly unusual. Could Congress Force him to put forward tapes if he actually has them . If there were enough senators in congressmen, a majority, to subpoena them or request them or demand them, certainly. Thats always the question, of course, with republicans in charge here in both the house and senate. Strange times indeed. No question about it, stephanie. Shoot the messenger has been a theme since the time of the ancient greeks and sean spicer taking the fall or anybody else taking the fall in the press shop is not going to fix his problem here on the hill and that is for certain. Three times President Trump told jim comey by the president s own accounting comey told him he was not the subject of investigation. Hes not an investigation. Its important to get the tapes to get insight into exactly what President Trumps motivations were in firing jim comey. Over the weekend you were right members from both sides of the aisle had harsh words on this topic. And if there are any tapes they have to be turned over. You cant be cute about tapes. If, in fact, there are such recordings, i think those recordings will be subpoenaed and i think they will probably have to turn them over. Ive asked others have asked to make sure the tapes are preserved if they exist. If there are tapes the president should turn them over immediately, of course. Reporter so mark warner you saw him there, hes also the vice chair of the Senate Intelligence committee, they have the active investigation, the more active investigation here on the hill. He says hell subpoena the tapes if he has to. Stephanie. Michael, i want to bring the panel back. Gentlemen, President Trump, this is the guy who penned art of the deal. He could very well be bluffing. Are we wasting our time with the lets see those tapes if theyre not illegal, if he was legally allowed to do it, come on, like do you really think he has tapes out there . I actually dont think its worth all of this. I dont think i think its just a classic move on the part of trump to bully. You know, ive come to believe that donald trump thinks hes playing at the Lincoln Center but he acts like hes in [ inaudible ] lounge, right. I just think that this is just a bullying move. He just won the show. I looked it up the other day because i was you looked up the hurry back lounge. Watergate for my sick and twisted anumts and the day that Alexander Butterfield was testifying and asked him about john dean having suggested there were tapes and butterfield was a guy who installed the system and he calmly said to the guy asking him the questions, i was waiting for somebody to ask me that question. Yes, there are tapes. So if there are tapes, stef, what could possibly go wrong. Eddie, i want to ask you, i keep going back to on Inauguration Day as part of the president s speech he said, this is the time in history, when power is being returned to the people. Well, theres the latest nbc news wall street journal poll where 29 of the people approved of comeys firing, 38 disapproved, 32 had no opinion. If the people here are a push, are we going to get past this . Is the issue james comey because when people are polled and theyre asked, should there be an independent council, a special prosecutors people are saying there should. Is the issue james comey or russia . I think the issue is russia and the issue is trump. Right. I think trump. There are various proxies for dealing with the instability of trump, the disruptive nature of trump, right. What were going to see over and over again are these instances, these occasions, where folks are going to call into question his competency, right, his dedication, whether or not hes fit to be in office. When does the rubber hit the road with that noise . Like how many more times are we going to talk about ethic specialists is he emotionally fit. You knew who you were electing. He hasnt surprised us. I love this stuff about an independence counsel. Until last week we had one, his name was james comey. Whoever the next person is you cant say james comey wasnt tainted because he was. You cant say truly independent. The false narrative here is, that if you ever criticize james comey for his handling of the clinton emails, that you had that you had to automatically get on board with the way he got fired. Fair point. Thats not exactly illogic. Fine. Were taking a break. Thank you. What do i know . Kristen welker, mike vick seer kyra, michael and eddie arent going anywhere. More democrats pushing for the special prosecutors to look into any potential russia ties to the Trump Campaign. Can democrats do anything to force the department of justice to name one . Well democratic senator Chris Van Hollen joins me next. With all the news last week you knew, you knew saturday night live was going to have a lot to toy with and they didnt disappoint. After this week many people are drawing comparison between you and richard nixon. No, i am nothing like nixon because i am not a crook. Okay. Plus, i bet nixon only got one scoop of ice cream but i get two scoops, two scoops. Okay. Of course mr. President youre also very different from nixon because he won the popular vote. Had. The classes, the friends, the independence. And since we planned for it, that student debt is the one experience, im glad shell miss when you have the right financial advisor, life can be brilliant. The only hotel where you can redeem loyalty points for a free nightinstantly and win at business. Why does why did all of those meet the test for a special counsel but this one doesnt . This is a Counter Intelligence investigation. Were not investigating a crime yet. Republican senator Lindsey Graham on meet the press saying he is not convinced a special prosecutor should be appointed to investigate potential ties between russia and the Trump Campaign, but the battle lines are drawn. Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer is joining a growing group of democrats who say a special prosecutor must be appointed and if not democrats will refuse to vote on whoever President Trump picks to replace james comey as fbi director. Joining me now is democratic senator Chris Van Hollen of maryland. Will you refuse to vote on trumps pick for fbi director unless the special prosecutor is named . Because if thats the case youre sort of setting yourself up for being called on obstructionist. No. I think its very important that the first step be the appointment of a special prosecute per. That is the only way that we the American Public can have confidence in the Justice System because you now have the attorney general and the Deputy Attorney general tainted as a result of how this firing of the fbi director went down and its really important to have a special prosecutor who cannot be fired by the president. That is one thing that we know is essential because look what happened to comey, look what happened to the other u. S. Attorneys like the u. S. Attorney up in new york who had been assured he would stay on who today himself called for a special prosecutor in order to make sure we have some integrity in this process. Well, preet is available and has time. The Justice Department did interview eight potential candidates for fbi director they include andrew mccabe, former house intelligence chair mike rogers and senator john cornyn, among others. Assuming you got a special prosecutor and were willing to take a look at these candidates are any of these acceptable to you . I think we have to have someone at the helm of the fbi who is not connected to partisan politics in any way. In my view that would mean it should not be somebody who is a current or former member of congress, it should be somebody who is nonpartisan and somebody who has had a stellar career in Law Enforcement. Anybody who has been involved in politics in one way or another i believe will not meet the test of congress with respect to an fbi director. Can you tell me what the goal is with these tapes . Over in the House Democrats john conyers and Elijah Cummings are demanding the white house hand over any possible tapes of conversations between President Trump and james comey. Do you really believe there are any tapes or is the goal here that you think President Trump is bluffing and you want to make him show his hand . I dont know whether there are any tapes but we should absolutely demand that any tapes that may exist be handed over. Look, from the perspective of the Public Interest i think either way, the president has created incredible doubts. He apparently invited comey over for dinner. He claims comey wanted to come over. In the course of that dinner he essentially asked for a loyalty test while hes giving and interviewing the fbi director to see whether he will stay on or not. Its important we get to the bottom of that conversation. The tapes will be one way. Another thing that will be absolutely essential is to have former fbi director comey come testsfy on capitol hill and its really important that at least part of that testimony be in open session and now that hes been fired, my understanding is that director comey is at liberty to provide a lot more information than he otherwise would have been. So his testimony as to what happened in that conversation with trump, will be very important. And how about Rod Rosenstein . Hes scheduled to speak this week. What do you want to hear from him . I mean he has a longstanding career of getting bipartisan support. What do you want to hear from him . Well, i want to hear first of all exactly how this whole thing went down. As we know, of course, they tried to pin the entire firing on rosenstein. But apparently that didnt happen. He did provide the pretext. He essentially was used by the Trump Administration to provide the pretext for this firing. So number one, we want to know exactly how all that went down because its more clear than ever now that trump fired comey because the fbi investigation into collusion between the Trump Campaign and the russians was heating up and the second thing is, Rod Rosenstein is the person who now has the authority to appoint a special prosecutor. If sessions has recused himself and there are questions surrounding his involvement in the firing if he recused himself that leaves it to Rod Rosenstein. Many of us would like to see Rod Rosenstein, in fact, appoint or designate that authority to the senior career official at the Justice Department, but either way, the decision now with respect to the hiring of a special prosecutor is in Rod Rosensteins hands and thats why its really important that he come down and answer questions and people are going to ask him very directly to do that, to appoint a special prosecutor. He has, in fact, been tainted in this process by being used by the Trump Administration in the way that he was with respect to crafting the memo, which was a pretext, we now know, because trump planned to fire comey all along. So he says. All right. Senator thank you so much. I appreciate your time this morning. Thank you. And again if theres a special prosecutor were not saying there is something wrong. Were asking for transparency and more information. Look at this image, ready for this, north korea has another successful missile test, one they say could carry a Nuclear Warhead. We have to take a turn back to politics and learning President Trump ordered an emergency meeting friday night to assess the threat of a Cyber Security breach. This after massive ransom ware attacks hit a total of 150 countries, at least 200,000 victims and there are new fears the attack could expand as people return to work today. Nbcs Kelly Cobiella joins me from london. What do we know about who is responsible for this attack . Not very much right now, stephanie. Some Industry Experts are saying its probably the work of russianspeaking cyber criminals but we simply dont know. The intelligence agencies are looking into this and they say its really tough to crack a case like this and there may be multiple hackers, cyber thieves, putting out this code now. This morning American Companies and home users could still be at risk. The virus is still spreading. Its hit nissan and tech giant hitachi along with a nonprofit in japan. Some of this may be a matter of timing. Those companies were closed when the mallware initially spread on friday. Its known as wannacry. It has affected about 200,000 systems worldwide in 150 countries. The worm comes first in an email with a bad link and then quickly infects an entire Computer Network demanding the 300 ransom to get your encrypted files back. Over the weekend interestingly, a 22yearold british Cyber Security researcher says he accidentally found a kill switch that slowed the spread. The problem is, stephanie, theres a new version of this mallware out there. It could still infect computers. The best way to protect yourself is to make sure you have all the latest security updates installed in your computers. Stephanie. This is scary stuff. I want to share with you a few tidbits. To protect yourself from a cyber attack at home the department of Homeland Security has tips, never click on links in emails. If you think you need to click on a link go to the companys official website and use the regular login method. Never open attachments if youre suspicious of the source. For example, retailers. They usually do not send attachments and do not give out personal information over the phone or email unless youre completely sure that the source is legitimate. This is a scary story and we dont want you to get impacted. We have to turn to another major threat overseas. It could have potential to have a nuclear tipped warhead on top of it. The important thing about it, stephanie, a successful launch and serious, what im picking up here, throughout the morning. One other note on this, this is the First Successful launch of the kn17 and the first second excuse me launch we have had since that maralago summit and that summit where President Trump met with president xi was a chance to let diplomacy breathe a little bit and let it work. Well, the Supreme Court has just turned down the state of north carolina, which had asked the court to take up an appeal of a ruling from the lower courts that put a hold on one of the strictest new voter restriction laws in the state. This is the one of the toughest voter i. D. Laws in the country. It also shaved seven days off the period for early voting. It stopped same day registration and said 16yearolds couldnt preregister to vote. Ruled out out of precinct voting. The lower courts put a hold on it saying it was passed by the legislature with the intent to discriminate. North carolina asked the Supreme Court to take this court and basically save the law, but today, the Supreme Court declined to do that. Now is the as is the usual case here, the Supreme Court did not give any reason. Theres no vote. They simply declined to take up the case. The chief justice did, though, write here saying that there had been a blizzard of paperwork from the state over who had the right to appeal and he concludes by saying, remember, just because we didnt take the case, doesnt mean were expressing any opinion on the merits of the case. But nonetheless its a big defeat for the state of north carolina. Back to you, stephanie. My goodness. We have to take a turn. Time for money, power and politics. A bombshell report by the wall street journal at least three former employees of donald trump say they saw him tape phone calls in trump tower before he became president. The revelation comes as questions grow about whether President Trump taped conversations with former fbi director james comey. Joins me is author of that piece wall street journal Investigative Reporter alexander burj ron. President trump while he was businessman what would be the reason to tape conversations if not for blackmail purposes . I think theres a number of reasons in Business People do do it. In new york it is legal as long as the person is the one taping. So what i found hold on. In new york its legal. If one person knows. Hear ray dalio who believe in radical transparency and everyone knows theyre being taped. To secretly tape someone else why was President Trump doing that when he was in business . I mean, when i spoke with the people it was he, you know, the accounts varied from incredibly frequently in some cases to not as frequently and, you know, on a casebycase basis. I think, you know, in some cases he used it actually in a lawsuit to catch someone with what he said the person had misrepresented a phone conversation that he had had. I think he was trying to catch people in lies possibly. Theres a variety of reasons but it is not common in business is what i found from real estate. It happens but its its not necessarily common. We know its not common to secretly tape people. We are electing an uncommon president. What can come of this . No good can come of this. I think he was bluffing with comey. I i have no evidence of that. I think hes trying to take an aggressive position of somebody whose version of things he knows is going to be wildly this idea that comey told him three times that he wasnt being investigated it sounded like st. Peter, you know, denying christ three times at the last supper. I think he knows that comey, when he tells his story, even as someone who is a very fine civil servant, is not going to back his version of things and so i do i know its a bluff . No. But i think it was a bluff. Will this prove out to be an example of how business practice, art of the deal practices dont nosily work in government dont necessarily work in government. Youre held accountable at every possible turn. Its one of the things that infuriates the president , one of the reasons he doesnt like the press, because we check you on everything. He doesnt want to be held accountable. This is really important for us to kind of note, and that is, that theres a basic character problem here. We keep trying to im so tired of having to respond to something outrageous that donald trump has done. And part of the thing that we need to conclude is that hes not a good person. I think once we what does it mean for the imperial presidency does that matter . Yes, in my heart it matters but many people voted for President Trump not believing that he is a good person but they wanted health care reform, they wanted job creation, they wanted their taxes cut. If we cant get to that agenda, though, if youre part of President Trumps team there to do that you cant even find those agendas at this point. He has this idea that is supposed to be on his team. I mean i thought that was a thoroughly gutless performance by Mitch Mcconnell the other day talking about if you ever criticize comey youre not allowed to take issue with what he just did. There has been this conceit on his part in my opinion that he didnt just create a great political upset, that somehow he got elected by acclamation on by this country and that everything he did was going to be celebrated. Are they all on his team . I want to point out theres an article in politico that says the information coming to President Trump is not being very tightly controlled. It points out that k. T. Mcfarland put forward a cover of Time Magazine that supposedly shows the hypocrisy of global scientists two covers. One of them being an absolute fake. Now before and President Trump got very upset about it. Before he could take to twitter to light up, doesnt that blow your mind that the president s time is being muddled and confused with his own team giving him fake information . I mean, i think that in terms of, you know its just an example of where you have you know in terms of the taped phone calls, its where you have sort of Business Practices that are getting used in a way theyre not best Business Practices. In best business practice jamey dimon is not allowed to do that. Public companies with boards and shareholder but when you run a mom and pop Family Office thats a different show. Back to the claim about him not being a decent person. If why have you a person who encage this is this sort of behavior feels hes not beholden to any norms or held to account he will believe he can do anything he wants to do swhen yu have na in the white House Democratic norms are out the window. When you have democratic norms out of the window checks and balances fall apart and you find ourselves in this moment how will we survive. Familyvalues. Up next democrats continue to push for a special prosecutor to look into ties between the Trump Campaign and russia but will the republicans go along . Republican congressman rodney davis joins me next. Before we go it was a very big weekend not because it was mothers day, but the bronx, mr. Northrop grumman command and control systems always let you see the complete picture. And were looking for a few dreamers to join us. The silence of my republican colleagues on this issue is sort of deafening. This is not an issue of party. This is an issue of country. That was Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer blasting republicans who have not called for a special prosecutor after s fbi director. Im joined now by one of his capitol hill colleagues, rodney davis. A republican from illinois. It comes as no surprise that is Chuck Schumers take. But you said youre surprised and somewhat troubled by james comey being fired. But it seems like you said lets see how this plays out. Lets see how the white house handled it. It was very messy how the white house handled it with the press team and what the president said were two very different things. 78 of republicans say they want an investigation led by an independent commission or special prosecutor. So where do you stand at this point . Well, stephanie, its great to be with you again. I love hearing polls. Remember, the media and members of congress are sitting at about 13 to 17 approval rating. People still watch your show and you still want to talk to us. Lets explain to the American People whats actually happening. Number one, there is no evidence of collusion. And we have investigations with the fbi, doj, the house and Senate Intelligence committees where many of my republican and Democrat Friends and colleagues are going to do a great job get together bottom of this. Lets make sure we actually investigate any possible any allegation that any foreign country including russia would want to tamper with our elections. That has to be done. And theyre going throughout processes right now. And i trust that theyll do well. But its not troubling to you that across the board russia, rush yashgs russia is what we hear in terms who have hacked the election and our own president is still saying could be russia. Could be someone else. When you said last week it somewhat troubling, lets see how the white house justifies it, they justified it for you . What is troubling is i was surprised by the fact that director comey was fired and surprised by the aftermath and the explanations from the white house. But i think theyre hopefully going to learn their lesson. Whether it comes to the election issue, number one, no one believes that russia determined the outcome of this election. If russia or any country decides to tamper with our electoral process, processes or any involved in any espionage activities, we need to get to the bottom of it. Thats what the fbi, doj and house and Senate Intelligence committees are doing in a bipartisan way right now. So you just said you hope the white house learns their lesson. How are they going to learn their lesson . Well, thats up to them. Hold on a second. My kids you dont learn your lesson by deciding its up to mechlt someone thooz do something to make you learn your lesson. I think the attention that this is getting from the media is going to send a message to the white house and just like many opportunities that theyre going to have, theyre going to be able to do things in a much more succinct way. And think about this. This is the first president we had in our lifetime thats come directly from the private sector with zeier yoe government or zero military experience. There is a different learning curve and i think theyre experiencing that in many cases right now. We cant negate the successes theyve had with getting the president of china to help them with economic sanctions in north korea. Who would have thought that when donald trump was running for president . Sir, over the weekend over the weekend north korea had another missile test and they put out there that they believe that it could possibly hold a Nuclear Warhead that could reach the united states. So what concrete evidence do you have that that meeting between ping and President Trump resulted in such positive outcomes . Well, the fact that we have got china working with us against north korea when there is an unstable dictator running that country who is going to do everything he can and has done for decades now to try to in his own mind intimidate the united states. Remember it wasnt too long ago in the clinton administration, stephanie, that a deal was made to give hundreds of millions of american tax dollars to north korea to allow them to stop developing a nuclear weapon. That didnt work out too well for us. And now President Trump and his administration, the one left to deal with that situation. Its a complicated situation no doubt. A scary one as well. Thank you for joining me this morning. I appreciate it. Coming up, more details leaking out of a possible shakeup in the white house. How chaotic are things in west wing . And how big of a problem is that .
