Donald trumps electoral victory lap is less than three weeks old but already, his campaign, one of the ugliest in history, is starting to fade. Will it be easy for america to forget candidate trump and embrace him as president elect . James patterson is an associa professor at Lehigh University and joe watkins, a former white house aide in the george h. W. Bush administration. We were talking yesterday about donald trump and you like so many said to me, stop normalizing this man. He is our president elect. If we continue to argue about Donald Trumps character, do we risk drowning out conversations about what hes going to do as president . Stephanie, first of all, its peterson, and second, its our challenge and charge as american citizens to have both conversations at the same time. Theres no reason why we in the media and the american citizenry cannot critique his character. By the way, the question of character at the centerpiece of almost every president ial election and every president ial campaign and Administration Since ive been alive so i dont know why we would dispense with that where donald trump emerged in 2016. So i think we can be critical of his character and keep it in the context of the political evolution weve seen over the last couple of years has taken place and also have a steady sort of eye and a critical eye towards the picks hes making for his cabinet. The policy sort of arrangements and initiatives he starts or doesnt start. I think thats part of what president ial politics is and i invite folks to join the fray. John, we saw so many people throughout the election say im going to vote for a lesser of two evils. Have you been inside the white house . Do you think a man that can have a flawed character, even unlikable character could be an effective president . Its possible, its possible. Clearly, the country is pretty divided. Weve had a divided country before after president ial elections before and even sometimes president s initially unpopular were able to govern well, so yeah, the possibility exists for somebody who has not been popular with at least half the country to govern the country well. That remains to be seen. Im looking at the cabinet picks. I want to see africanamericans appointed to the cabinet. I want to see people who will give me a sense of comfort with regards to what happens when afghan americans are killed by Police Officers on these traffic stops. I want to make sure that everybodys going to be treated fairly and certainly, half the country is still upset. I think theres still got to be outreach to half the country to say, you know what . Im going to work with everybody and at least so far, hes got some diversity in his cabinet. The outreach though. Its not outreach, but a lot of wealthy white guys and two women. And so well still see. The jury is still out. Are there names not thrown around that you think should be . Well, i dont expect the names that i want to see to come out of a Trump Administration but the mainames we are seeing dont think are speaking to. Were talking about trump being a populist president and the reality is the greater percentage of the population voted for hillary clinton. Weve not seen direct overtures on the part of cabinet picks or language or social media messaging coming out of president elect Trump Administration that suggests hes actually trying to conduct any kind of outreach. No pick whatsoever can communicate that or has communicated that to the 60 plus million folks who voted for hrc. Maybe harold ford jr. If he emerges. I dont think weve seen it yet. I want to talk about donald trump flipflopping. Hes been getting criticism about flipflopping on issues and arguing that maybe we should have hope because when we hear him back off a little bit on things like obamacare, climate change, torture tactics and move to the middle, is that a positive or show that this guy simply doesnt stick to his word . Which is the right trump, i guess you could say . I think donald trump is a practical person, a pragmatist more than somebodys philosophically assigned. I wouldnt expect him to be aligned with the left or center. Hes a practical guy and may not even soften his stance and some of the signature issues because he realizes that staying hard and firm, we bring about great distress. And so i think this is a very practical president elect and hes going to make practical decisions. A democrat the names of the cabinet as well as some of the other folks that have already been named. And hard to typecast him or second guess him. I dont know if we should call this being pragmatic or practical but the rate is when you look at the Affordable Care act and 1. 5 Million People in florida on aca and half a Million People in georgia and donald Trump Supporters on at the aca who covered through health care at aca and the reality is that you cant repeal it without in sop wme ways exacerbating your position and a lot of positions, building the wall and notions about changing trade policy and dont make sense in the actual administration.
