While another, ben sasse says he is open to impeachment proceedings. The house, if they come together, and have a process, i will definitely consider whatever articles they might move, because as ive told you, i believe the president has disregarded his oath of office. He swore an oath to the American People to preserve, protect, and defend the constitution. He acted against that. What he did was wicked. Wicked. And joe bidens inauguration, just 11 days away, right there, at the capitol, as extremism intensifies calls for violence. As we say good morning, everybody. It is a busy, saturday, january 9th. Im kendis gibson. Im lindsey ricer. No more notifications from the po tus twitter account. A big deal and we have a team of reporters following the latest right now. First up we will discuss the fallout of the capitol hill assault by the numbers. More than 80 people have been arrested and five people died in connection with the riots including a Capitol Hill Police officer. And nearly 250 lawmakers are calling for the president s removal. Just 11 days left in office. The number is growing up from nearly 100 lawmakers. This, as more Administration Officials resign over the president s handling of the riots, including these two members of his cabinet that you see here. Betsy devos and elaine chao. Lets get to our correspondents first in washington, d. C. , with heidi and josh lederman, with the latest reaction from the white house, with the ban from twitter and many other platforms. Josh, twitter taking this major step at this point. Why now . Well, the president in the first year he was in office, said that without twitter, he wouldnt be here. And now, as he finishes the last couple of weeks of his oneterm presidency, he is now, kendis without that fmeg phone that he has preferred to use to speak to his more than 80 million followers on twitter until he was suspended last night. As far as why not. Twitter saying his platform was used as part of the president s attempt to incite this insurrection attempt against the u. S. Government, saying in a statement that after closely reviewing his tweets and the context, specifically how theyre being interpreted on and off twitter, they permanently suspended the account, due to the risk of further incitement of violence. Twitter describing in the statement, horrific events this week, amend the fact that they had warned President Trump that if he continued to use the platform in this way, this is exactly what they were planning to do. And now, this has left the white house scrambling to figure out other ways for the president to be able to deliver his message. In fact, at this hour, we are told that a video that the white house had wanted to issue of President Trump speaking about coronavirus and the vaccine, that has now been delayed because theyre trying to figure out basically where to put it, thou that the president does not have his twitter account. And in fact, we know that the white house is looking into other platforms the president could potentially take his business to, other social media sites, and the white house also saying that President Trump is considering creating a platform of his own. Yes, he doesnt have twitter, he doesnt have instagram, or facebook, google, hes running out of options, parler is banned by google as well. Interesting. All right, heidi, from where i sit, there are a lot of Different Things that could happen. We have articles of impeachment, we have threatening of the implication of the 25th amendment and another solution the president would step down and of course none of the above. Where do we stand . The articles of impeachment were initially meant to be a threat to force the cabinet to act to invoke the 25th amendment. At this hour we dont have any indication that is happening with the Vice President or cabinet members. What weve seen is resignation, for instance from the education secretary betsy devos so what you have is a building consensus, at least among democrats in the house and the senate, that they need to move on impeachment. No matter how this ends. Whether it is successful at removing the president or not, this needs to happen. So they had a 3. 5hour Conference Call that was very, very furious, by a lot of members yesterday, and they say that they are planning to vote sometime next week. This will not force most likely the 25th amendment invocation but nobody can predict what is going to happen with this president , lindsey, and so Speaker Pelosi is telling her conference that in the meantime, what we need to do is make sure that nothing worse happens. Shes actually placed a phone call to the joint chiefs of staff, mark milley, and said what are the safeguards that are in place to make sure that this quote unhinged president doesnt do Something Like try to use the military, and does he still have access to the Nuclear Codes . Take a listen to what she said in a recent interview. The executive branch, a derangd, unhinged, dangerous president of the United States. And that only a number of days until we can be protected from him. But he has done something so serious, that there should be prosecution against him. Well, i gather that the 25th amendment is off the table. No, it isnt. Nothing is off the table. So talks are ongoing, even today, over the week, about what the nature of these articles will be, beyond incitement, lindsey, and the critical question is whether theyre going to get any republicans to sign on. Republicans are now coming out, including senator lisa murkowski, calling for resignation, but that is different from an impeachment process. Is there some kind of language that they can get, to get republicans on board . But like i said, regardless, the attempt here is to send a message to both the mob and to the American People that this type of behavior, what we witnessed here, on this day, that will go down in infamy, an attack on the u. S. Capitol, with five people dead, with people having erected a galows to hang the Vice President , there was reporting about that, that this type of incident cannot be let go and there must be some attempt to show consequences and democrats will attempt to try to at least get some republicans on board, and like Speaker Pelosi said, in the meantime, lets just investigate what our tools are to make sure that this president who is now being locked out of social media doesnt have any other tools at his disposal. Lindsey . We have to remember, shy of Nine Supreme Court justices and the president himself, this was a state of the union. And it got attacked, we were talking about the president not having any options to get his message out, prior to bush, w. Bush and obama, they had other options. Including the podium. Whats the white house saying about that . And about impeachment . Well, youre absolutely right. The white house and the president at any point in time could issue a press release, they could hold a News Conference in the white house, the press briefing room, i guarantee you news outlets would attend that. The white house is saying that impeaching President Trump at this juncture would be divisive rather than healing, which is a sent million soaked in irony given the fact that President Trump stands personally accused of fomenting an insurrection attack asns the guch against government. But as trump said yesterday, this is a time for healing and unity, as one nation, describing a future attempt as politically motivated, with impeachment attempt politically motivated with 12 days left in the term. Notably, the comments with white house are very similar to what were hearing from Kevin Mccarthy the republican leader in the house. No longer are we hearing about the first impeachment of donald trump, that this is a crazy thing to do, and instead, the argument now is focused on saying, with just less than two weeks left in office, its kind of moot and is unnecessary. Leave it there with you guys. Thank you for being there for us. Heidi, josh, in washington, d. C. , for us, joining us right now, former republican congressman of florida, congressman, thank you, first on to impeachment. Is this moving to fast . Or is having trump in office in the waning days of his presidency too risky . Well, look, everything should be on the table, because this president is so risky. Now, we know, weve seen that this president , and his lies, can lead to death, violence, destruction, so everything should be on the table, and many republicans are quietly talking about these options. Of course, Adam Kinzinger and others have been more up front about it but republicans are really worried, and what i would encourage them to do, instead of worrying, is to act and to make sure they do Everything Possible to contain this president , because obviously our nation is at risk. All of us are at risk. And heres what former republican senator bob corker told our colleague Andrea Mitchell yesterday. Lets listen. You have to remember, he does the victim thing. Thats how he, thats how he maintains his power. And so what would happen if an impeachment proceeding started, what would happen is he would, his base would rally to his cause, and so while i hear that, and certainly under the circumstances, that type of discussion is warranted, the fact is, all that would do is strengthen him. Do you agree with that . Well, look, i understand theres a political calculation here, but at the end of the day, we did have four people die the other day, we did have our National Cathedral democracy desecrated, we were reduced as a nation in a significant way, because of wednesdays events, and if there is another threat, if thats possible, and if the president , from his position, in the white house, can encourage that type of violence, then we do have to think about removal. Now, as a practical matter, we have what, 11 days left, and maybe, it doesnt make sense, but these are extraordinary times an thats why i just dont think you can disregard any option, any legislative tool toe be a check and balance on this dangerous president at this hour. Congressman, you see images like the ones were showing of people breaking their way into the speakers lobby there, and Many Americans feel hurt and angry and upset by these images, yet according to an axios poll, eight in ten republicans oppose removing trump from office. So do you think that will stop more republicans from speaking out, because it doesnt appear to be popular . It has certainly been an obstacle for all of these four years of donald trump that the Republican Base has continued to support him. And of course, that weighs on republican members of congress. The members of congress should listen to their constituents but members of congress should also lead and they should also tell their constituents the truth, they should explain to their constituents that donald trump caused all of this violence, this destruction, and this death. So i call upon my former colleagues, every republican in congress, to follow the Adam Kinzingers, follow the ben sasses, the mitt romney, the mitch mcconnells, people who are telling the American People the truth, because that is what we need. You cannot simply look at polls and follow, because people are dying. You cannot look at polls and follow, because our democracy is diminished, because we are looking like the countries that my parents fled. Cuba, for example, thats what were looking like these days. And that cannot continue. Former congressman carlos, kuevelo, leaders not telling their constituents the truth is part of the reason why we are where we are. Thank you this morning. And the moments before trump supporter and air force veteran Ashli Babbitt was stormed to death. We will get reaction from a former dhs official who resigned last year over fears that the president was pouring fuel on the fire of domestic extremism. We are learning more about the Capitol Police officer, Brian Sicknick, who lost his life in wednesdays violence. As well as the moment another officer fatally shot a rioter, trying to breach the doors of the speakers lobby. For more on the investigation, into wednesdays siege, nbcs Allison Barber is live at capitol. You were there when this was happening and youre still there now. What are you learning . Reporter theres one officer who is now on administrative leave, after fatally shooting one of the rioters, the other officer, Brian Sicknick is dead, at just 42 years old, as so many people were running away from this area, officer sicknick was one who reportedly ran toward the danger, engaging physically with protesters, Capitol Police say he was injured in that interaction, he went back to his divisions office, where he collapsed, and then later died. Officers here in the capitol have a salute thursday night to honor him, flags are now flying at halfstaff in his memory and his fellow officers are trying to figure out who might have been involved in the events that led to his death. A Senior Department of justice official tells nbc news, they are opening a federal investigation into the event surrounding officer sicknicks death and the investigation will be conducted jointly by the fbi and dc police. As all of that is happening, there are of course many questions, many concerns people have, about the response from the United StatesCapitol Police, why there werent more officers there, why they didnt seem to be fully dressed in riot gear, why more people werent arrested in the moment. We are seeing now, more video, a lot of it surfacing, online, that gives us more insight into what happens inside the United States capitol, and that moment where a rioter was fatally shot by an officer. And one of these videos and we do want to warn you this is disturbing video to watch, you can see where protesters were trying to break through, breach the doors to the speakers lobby, and at one point we see dc police or Capitol Police trying to move out of the way as another unit in Tactical Gear tries to make their way up to the front to take over, to pair cade that door and the protesters who we now know as Ashli Babbitt, the rioter she tries to climb through one of the windows shattered and an officer on the other side of the door shoots her. She of course later died. You can see from other videos obtained by the washington post, lawmakers just down that hall where the rioters were trying to breach the door, when that rioter was shot. All of that still under investigation, as Police Continue to search for people. The rioters that have been spotted on videos. And engaged in the violence. Lindsey, kendis . Can. That video is something. The officer who passed away, always wanted to be an officer, according to his family, very sad day for them. Ellison barber, thank you. So many questions this morning about national security. What went wrong during the capitol hill attack . What happens moving forward . We get some insight right now from elizabeth, a former assistant secretary of counterterrorism and Threat Prevention for dhs. Under trump and adviser with repair republic. Thank you for being here, elizabeth. You resigned in april, i should mention, warning that the Trump Administration was creating the conditions you said for domestic terrorism to flourish right here in the United States. Obviously, youre right. What does that make you think now though . We have such a big problem on our hands. I dont like being right. Im devastated to hear of the officers death. You even watch that video, and you, we dont know what the circumstances on the ground were ye yet with the Capitol Police but obviously there is a leadership failure, a preparedness failure but there is no doubt the men and women of the Capitol Police did their best to hold the line and they were just underresourced and didnt have the right equipment, but it appears they were able to hold off the reuteiot rioters until legislators could flee. And in my mind, theyre hero but we need to develop answers and hold accountable anybody that didnt do the right thing, but you know, just, i just want to say that im very grateful for their service. But you know, we have a huge problem in this country with domestic terrorism. It didnt start with donald trump. Its been around for decades. And the ideology that many of these extremists believe in has been around since our founding. This idea of white supremacy, and recent years, antigovernment extremism, this modern age of it, we really saw it full force in the 1990s, and all of the statistics tell us that the number of terrorist attack, the number of extremistrelated murders, the preponderance of those, overwhelming majority of those, come from right wing extremists, not from religious terrorism, not from al qaeda and isis. You take 9 11 out of it, and the statistics are, it is right wing extremism that is the number one cause of terrorist attacks, terrorist deaths. So if that is our set of facts, and we started to see this growth during the trump era, we clearly needed to treat this with seriousness, but it didnt occur on trumps watch, it is the culmination of it. They did the opposite. They stoked it. We do have another piece of video i want to show you of the mob. And it comes with the caveat and a warning to viewers, the video youre about to see is disturbing. Take a look at this video. This is a mob and ive seen this only one time, right now, and you can see the battle that took place with these police officers. This one particular officer there, just seemingly getting crushed by a sea of people. All behind him. I dont know what to make of it. You work in counterterrorism. Under trump. What do you make of it . Theres no doubt that there were two groups of people in this crowd. There were people with tactical and strategic skills, probably honed in the military, or other Law Enforcement services, that new exactly what they were doing. We have evidence that there were neo nazis in this group, we had many posting on social media that they were not there to protest the election, they were there for their own ideological purposes. They want to overthrow the u. S. Governmental. And this was a great opportunity for them to start that process of leading us to a civil war. So there were a lot of very nefarious characters in this crowd. And then you had other people that were there, protesting a stolen election, but had been lied to for years at this point, and had, were basically brain washed to believe that it is their right, and it is justifiable for them to overrun the capitol, and try to force, i dont know what that means for them, but force the legislators, the congress, to, you know, certify the election for trump. So you had two different types of characters that are mingling in this crowd. And certainly the militant ones, those are the ones that concern me the most. But with such a large number of people, you were able to see some great damage. But honestly, im surprised we didnt see more. It could have been much worse. It could have been much worse. Not happy with the way it ended. I hope that this brain washed spell has been broken. Elizabeth neumann, thank you. All right, everybody, weve got breaking news to bring you this morning. Recorded just 4,000 deaths in one day for the First Time Since the start of the pandemic, with cases topping 22 million. As states struggle to contain the virus. Leading not only the United States, but now the entire world with the highest covid19 case rate. Msnbc correspondent cori coffin is joining us now in phoenix with the latest on this. Good morning. What are they doing to try to stem this spread . Reporter yes, thats a great question. Because still, no statewide mask mandate, kendis and we have seen major cities like the city of phoenix requiring them. So people are Wearing Masks throughout. But there still hasnt been a uniformed response, and many residents and Many Health Care systems are calling for that unified response. The state likely to top some 600,000 cases this weekend. And 10,000 covid19 deaths. To put it in perspective, you saw the numbers a moment ago, the Czech Republic is the country with the highest per capita rate, and arizona beats that by more than 100 people per 100,000. Its just an astronomical rate right now. The Positivity Rate of tests coming back in maricopa county, the largest county in arizona, is 18. 9 , nearly 20 . We spoke with Banner Health, the largest Hospital System here about what theyre experiencing. Listen to what they told us. So Banner Health is the Largest HealthCare Organization in the state of arizona. And we are very full. We are very busy. We are taking care of over, about half of all of the Covid Patients in the entire state. Would are consistently operating now at, we are consistently operating now at over 100 of our licensed fed capacity and our icus are very, very full. The most rate limiting issue during the surge is staffing, and our Health Care Staffing is amazing and theyre highly train and you just cant go out and find more of them. One of the other issues is a lack of oxygen in the state hospital, needing up to four times as much oxygen. Its a dire situation to say the least. And also, we have the situation, in the winter time, where more people, aka retirees, snow birds come together state, to get out of the colder states for the winter months and of course very vulnerable population, so that is also leading to the surge, including the Holiday Travel that were seeing. As a response, the state is now expanding their vaccinations to some, not only health care workers, emergency workers and some teachers as well as the elderly. Theyre going to try to vaccinate some 6,000 a day. That begins on monday. It is amazing when 6,000 a day sounds like a lot. We need to really get that ramped up. Cori coffin joining us from phoenix. Thank you. To georgia now where the Senate Runoffs are over and former gop senator david perdue has conceded to jon ossoff. Republican voters in the Southern State weighed in why their candidate lost. You cant sit back and complaint about things that you didnt even go vote. You cant. A lot of people, you know, they said, well, its rigged, theyre not going to vote, thats a miserable excuse. Youre not going to get out there and vote, at least say you did, and say you tried, what hope is there . You know, you hope its going to be fair, you dont know, fraud exists. Julia jester is indown town atlanta this morning, bringing the latest on how democrats made history. Julia, of course, we know that some fraud exists but those widespread claims of voter fraud were debunked. What are voters saying after the fact . Good morning, lindsey. The 2020 election is finally over. Here in georgia. And all things considered, the runoff went pretty smoothly here. And i spoke with voters after the fact to see what they thought. And both democrats and republicans were very surprised by the results. Republicans cited that rhetoric about a rigged election as well as negative attack ads, just bombarding the state, as why gop turnout could not come up with the pace of democrats. And democrats cited a positive message, centered on issues as to how they were able to cross that finish line. And what was the difference between the general election and the runoff for them . In person campaigning. It is a huge shift from that prenovember virtual campaigning due to covid. The runoff coordinated a campaign for the democrat, knocking on more than a million doors, in the runoff and clearly it paid off. Not just the shear numbers. New targeted outreach. To key demographics. Led to a huge boost in turnout among black voters. I spoke to voters across the political spectrum what theyre looking for from their new senators representing them from georgia and they all said unity. As for a possible second impeachment of President Trump, heres what a republican and a democrat had to say about that. Take a listen. Im not sure how i feel about that one way or another. At this point, i feel like whats done is done. And we node need to move forward as a notion. I would like to see him impeached but i just want america to be as peaceful as possible, i want this process to go as smooth as possible, and if it leaves him standing there a little while longer, im completely fine with, that but we cant have any more incidents like what we had at the capitol. Reporter so as you can see, georgians are really just ready to move on, move forward, and a really good part of that, senators david perdue and Kelly Loeffler have conceded and theyre ready to move on and so is georgia. Thanks for joining us. Cant help but think of van lewis, one time intern and the pastor, now headed to the senate. Following really tough, nearly twoyearlong battle with pancreatic cancer. He had pretaped several episodes which have been airing the last couple of weeks. He was 80 years old. But still what stops me in my tracks is when one of the contestants wrote for the final answer, we love you alex. And he is not known for emotions and the producer saying that one broke into him. Speaker nancy pelosi is laying the ground work for impeachment and threatening to bring donald trump up on formal charges if he does not resign. The democrats are aiming to fasttrack the process. With a vote by next week. The speaker released a statement saying it is the hope of members that the president will immediately resign but if he does not, i have instructed the rules committee to be prepared to move forward, with congressmans 25th amendment legislation and a motion for impeachment. Lets turn to our panel. Senior adviser to the Lincoln Project, susan is with us, and democratic strategist, the former executive director of the new york state democratic party. And a lecturer at columbia university. You heard it right there. They were asking, the congressman, who is any part of this, and couldnt help but think about the week that he had. Just last week his son committed suicide. This week hes there ducking, hiding from all of these thugs, as theyre making their way into the halls of the capitol, and now susan, writing the article of impeachment. Yes, its certainly a stunning week. And it shouldnt be surprising that we see people moving towards the articles of impeachment. I dont know how far well go. Because in order for the president to be convicted, the senate wont be able to convene their hearing until january 19th, the day before inauguration. But i do think its important to hold this president accountable. And thats what people want to see. Theyve seen him get away with things for so long, that we just have to show, no, this is unacceptable, and he will go down hopefully as the president that has been impeached, the only president who has been impeached twice. To susans point, there so Many Americans are saying something needs to be done. We need to make sure that everybody who was responsible for what happened this week just doesnt go away scottfree, but meanwhile, you have the the wall street journals conservative leading Editorial Board even saying this weeks events crossed a line and trump should resign, but theres still a lot of thought that thfurther divide the country. What say you. I actually agree with susans point, that moving forward is legally possible, politically necessary, and emotionally important, i think, for the country, and for the voters in these individual members districts. They want to see the president being held accountable. Theres a legal path for that to happen. I dont know that it will. Again, going to susans point, but i also take bidens point. He is saying, look, as bad as this was, we just need to get through these next few days. So that, you know, by the time the Biden Harris Team is actually sworn in and takes office, we can just get right to work. So i do understand the point. But if you go back to early 2020, when we were having a very similar conversation, but under very different circumstances, about this president , you realize, weve been talking about this for four years. Donald trump has not been able to rein in his own sort of antagonism of the American People, and of the system, and you know, when you ask folks, were you surprised, most of them will tell you absolutely not, at what happened last week. So when is there going to be another time or a better time to hold the president accountable . 2020, we were talking about a call with the ukrainian president , 2021, we were talking about a call with the georgia secretary of state, by the way, that was just last sunday. And losing sight of where we are. Susan, the Lincoln Project, running ads targeting senators cruz and hawley. Lets talk about why the Lincoln Project has decided to run those ads specifically against those senators. Because the Lincoln Project, when it was started by its founders, their mission was, or its mission is to defeat trump, and trumpism. Okay, it turns out trump was taken care of and not as thou t thought, as hard as we thought it could be. But trumpism is a whole different story. And thats what hawley and cruz represent. Its not an ideal or a principle. Its all about helping their own political careers and putting the nation at risk. They put themselves before their jobs. Themselves before their country. And they should be held accountable, and its never too early. You know, the one thing we saw with trump over the last four years is we kept going through the stories so quickly. Theres always Something Else that preempted what he did, but, the week before, we want, to i think its really important to see these people held accountable immediately and consistently. And thats what were trying to do. And its also important to send a message to other people that we will come after you, and hold you accountable, as in a neighbor, as a selfpromoter and someone who is seditionist, and against our democracy. Susan del percio, bazel, thank you. In plain sight for weeks, extremists didnt try to hide their plans to storm the capitol online. How did police miss it . Ben collins didnt miss it.
