Change the outcome of the election. This shows that they still fear trumps tweet. They still fear republican primary challenges. This is really setting on fire american institutions. Its going to end with a vote in the senate and a vote in the house against what theyre trying to do and well all move on with our lives and joe biden will get inaugurated on january 20th. Final push, joe biden, Kamala Harris, and President Donald Trump converging on georgia ahead of tuesdays highstakes runoffs, when voters determine the balance of power in the u. S. Senate. And potential drama on the house floor today, as nancy pelosi faces tight margins for a fourth run at speaker. Plus, new york now the fourth state to record 1 million covid19 cases, as the u. S. Reports more than 350,000 covidrelated deaths. With that, we say good morning to you, its sunday, january 3rd. Im cory coffin. And im joe fryer. We have a team of analysts and reporters following the very latest for you right now. We begin in washington where much of the drama is unfolding. Nbcs Heidi Przybyla is following the latest developments on capitol hill and nbcs monica alba has the latest from the white house. Heidi, first to you. More republicans now towing the president s line. Talk about the riff this is causing within the party. Reporter in a word, joe, this is not normal. We have gone from one republican senator saying that he would challenge these results now to effectively, last night, about onefourth of the republican conference. Not only has their leader, Mitch Mcconnell, made abundantly clear that he opposes this, but this is after all of these challenges have really faced a drubbing in the court system. So we had last night a number of republican senators issuing really scathing remarks, condemning their colleagues for what they believe is a fruitless attempt that only serves to undermine democracy. For instance, from senator mitt romney, he called this a, quote, egregious ploy that may enhance the political ambition of some, but dangerously threatens our democratic republic. Its something he said that should be reserved only for the most extreme and unusual circumstances. Senator pat toomey said, it is, quote, undermining the right of the people to effectively elect their own leaders. He said, i intend to vigorously defend our form of government by opposing this effort to disenfranchise millions of voters in my state and others. And senator Lisa Murkowski says, simply, i swore an oath to defend the constitution. And i will do so. So, again, joe, this is something that has been soundly defeated in the courts and now these partisan members of congress using it to what their colleagues say is really just a political advantage. Two of them, we know, have political ambitions for 2024. Senators ted cruz and josh hawley, who are really spearheading this, joe. Monica, were hearing not just from the president , but some of his aides are out defending this effort. What has been their line of messag messaging . Yeah, and the Vice President , most notably, is also now backing this republican effort. Of course, mike pence is the one who in a ceremonial role will be presiding over this joint session of congress on wednesday, that normally would be a mere formality, but now is expected to be quite an intense political sideshow and circus, in many ways. Were also hearing, though, from the white house trade adviser, Peter Navarro, who made some pointedly false claims last night on fox news. Take a listen. I would not be surprised to see a special counsel on this. And Vice President pence, he has the authority to give that tenday window to do what needs to get done. And i cannot imagine when he looks at the facts, he wont vote the right way on that. So, Peter Navarro there, is giving a lot more power to the Vice President in his role than is really legitimate. Thats not something that we can see pence do. That tenday, audit, though, is something that republican lawmakers that are going to object to the results have asked for. Completely unclear whether they will get it. Of course, we know that thats something that the president has continued to request, despite these baseless claims of voter fraud. And we should also point out here, the president is planning to hold a giant rally in washington, d. C. On wednesday to continue to echo these claims, that, of course, experienced losses in all of the courts, leading all the way up to that very important defeat in the Supreme Court a couple of weeks ago, cory and joe. And how about that call the president held with House Republicans last night . What do we know about that . It would seem that maybe his momentum is changing with republicans . This is not something that the white house announced or distributed any administration on. Were learning about it from several lawmakers who were on the call, like mo brooks, a congressman of alabama, but we also are learning that the chief of staff, mark meadows, was on this, and that the president offered some remarks. They are trying to imply that perhaps more House Republicans will join this effort. We already know that they expect to be dozens and dozens of them who will object. What we dont know, however, though, is if theyre trying to recruit even more. But what is undoubtedly clear is that this effort will not be successful. That joe biden will still be inaugurated, as the next president on january 20th. And heidi, Speaker Pelosi faces the leadership vote today. We know democrats have a slimmer margin this time around, so what are the expectations . Reporter shes not being formally challenged by anyone, unlike the past, joe. However, shes said that her opponent is, quote, covid. And the reason for that is, look, shes operating with historically, really thin margin here is, about 11seat margin. That is the narrowest in 20 years. And so what has to happen is members have to show up. So what we do know is that she was scrambling over the weekend to get those votes confirmed and nailed down. She said that she is fine, but again, she really cant afford to lose many seats, assuming everybody many votes assuming everybody shows up here. Last time, 15 members voted against her. This time, she could only lose about five of them. And like we said, its unclear whos actually going to be showing up for this vote. Theres different ways around it, voting present or having absentees. But in the end, they are counting these votes. She says shes confident. But it could be a close one. Yeah, it really shows the balancing act pelosi has to do between the more progressive wing of the party and the traditional part of the party. Nbcs Heidi Przybyla and monica alba, thank you both for starting us off this hour. Lets bring in our Political Panel now to talk all about this, unpack it a little bit more. Emily tish sussman, democratic strategist and former Vice President of campaigns for the center for american progress, and matt gorman, republican strategist and former aide to jeb bush and mitt romney are both in with us. With a good morning to you, matt, well start with you. Well throw it over to you first. My big question here is the motivation behind whats happening with effort with republicans, backing trying to say that joe biden did not legitimately win the election. So the big question, whats the motivation behind there . Does it really make sense. But as Heidi Przybyla also points out, they also have political ambitions themselves in 2024. Ive talked to republicans on both sides of this. And i think up until a few days ago, you saw many republicans willing to stand with mcconnell a little bit. He had been really pressing hard for nofolks not to object. But a couple of days ago, when hawley kind of jumped in the pool, so to speak, you saw a lot of other folks looking around, not wanting to be standing by the diving board by themselves. So i think what youre seeing now, as heidi was saying, its divided into mostly two camps. Not all, mostly. Some are in 2024 prospects. Others are worried about being outflanked in a primary. For the most part, those are the two camps. And what is the purpose of all of this from the president s perspective. Does he actually still think he can overturn the election, or is this more of a longterm plan even looking ahead to 2024 . Im not sure theres a longterm plan. And i certainly dont think, even if you asked him, that he thinks this will overturn the election. I think this is about really, on his way out, trying to drum support, and quite frankly, to be cynical. I think stay in the headlines a little bit. If you remember, uppal covid ve veto, a lot of the talk was surrounding biden, and i think this is what you might see in a postpresidency trump, ways he can inject himselvf into the headlines. What do you think of bidens handling of all of this . When you look at the goldilocks of responses, thats probably in the middle. Does he need to increase the messaging, stay above it all or not respond at all . President elect biden is focused on what he should be focused on, which is running the country and being the president. And i think weve actually forgotten that that is what we should be expecting from the president. Weve conditioned ourselves now to be chasing President Trumps tweet, to be trying to figure out where he stands on everything. But theres no sense in biden getting involved in it. Its going to roll out the way its going to roll out. Hes looking at personnel, at policy, at starting, hitting the ground running on day one. And i would love to see the Republican Party as a party be looking ahead and trying to figure out how theyre actually going to govern. I think what weve seen over the last couple of years is that republicans have not really been able to govern when they were in power, and not really figure out their strategy for governing. They did shave full control of the federal government when trump was elected. And weve kind of seen a constant deterioration since then of trump putting out conspiracy theories, tweets, whatever it may be. And the rest of the electeds just trying to chase them. And their response, even their language around this vote coming up in the Electoral College is not actually that they believe that there are concrete pieces of evidence of voter fraud, but they are responding to their constituents. That was even the statement that came out from from pences office, just that they were responding to what people wanted to see. Thats a huge problem. Im not sure how far they think that they can push the democracy and have it still stand. Emily tish sussman, matt gorman, thank you both for joining us this morning. We really appreciate it. Welcome back in. 15 minutes after the hour. Turning now to the pandemic, covid cases continue to break records here in the u. S. , with more than 20 million confirmed cases now. And deaths topping another grim milestone. 350,000. Unprecedented vaccination programs are underway worldwide, but in the united kingdom, the government is suggesting something a little bit different. Mixing and matching vaccines. If the situation calls for it and only in extremely rare circumstances. Nbcs sarah harmon is in london with more on the somewhat unconventional news. Sarah, good morning. Hey, cory, good morning. Yeah, we saw that reporting yesterday, in mostly u. S. Newspapers. And we hear in the uk were a little surprised by that. We reached out to Public Health england to find out exactly what the guidance is. This is what they told me. They said, there may be extremely rare occasions where the same vaccine is not available or where its not known what vaccine the patient received. Every effort should be made to give them the same vaccine. But where that is not possible, it is better to give a second dose of another vaccine than not at all. So, theyre not advocating a willynilly pickamix vaccine strategy, but they are saying that in some cases, it will be appropriate to give a different separate vaccine. Now, at this point, everyone in england who has been vaccinated has received the pfizer vaccine. Thats going to change from monday when the Company Rolls out the Astrazeneca Oxford vaccine. They have got more than half a million shots ready to go and many more are expected in the days and weeks to come. The other thing that the uk is doing thats raised a few eyebrows is extending the gap between the first and second shot. Weve talked about that on this show a couple of times over the weekend. And the Health Officials here are defending the decision to go against pfizers guidelines of 21 days between shots. And instead allow 21 weeks. Theyre saying that for every person who gets a second shot, theres someone else whos not getting that critical first shot. So theyre standing by this decision, despite criticism, and despite pfizer saying they cant guarantee the safety or the efficacy of changing the vaccination schedule. Cory, what were witnessing here the sometimes messy process of making Public Health policy in realtime, in the middle of a pandemic, with limited resources. The uk has demonstrated that its willing to be flexible with guidelines, in a way that the u. S. Clearly is not. Whether thats backed by science, whether its safe is the question. And right now, we just dont know. Cory . Yeah, we will have to wait and see what that policy does, how that changes things. Sarah harmon for us in london. Sarah, thank you. Lots to unpack out of england, as they face questions over their vaccine strategy. Lets bring in dr. Georges benjamin, the executive director of the american Public Health association. Good to see you this morning, doctor. So this move to mix vaccine dosage would only be done under extremely rare circumstances, based on whats available locally. In a dire situation, would it be better to vaccinate mixing doses rather than not vaccinate at all . I dont know i think thats a false choice. I think that what we really need to do is make sure that we have enough vaccine to vaccinate everyone. Now, look, the fda, when they did their review and then the cdc when they looked at this vaccine problem, they did recognize that that might happen by accident, where somebody got a mixed dose, one vaccine, from one company, and another vaccine from another company. But, that was not expected to be the norm. And i think that we ought to stick with the science and stick with the plan and make sure that we have enough vaccine to do this. Because thats really the right thing to do. Over time, if we learn that its okay to do it, we can always change policies. But right now, we should stick with the science that we know. Thats what dr. Fauci has been saying these past few days, as well. Some Health Officials in england also suggested front loading the first dose to as many people as possible, it would be an alternative to administering two doses of the same vaccine to some people. What does the research tell us, if anything, about this . Well, we dont know a lot about it. We do know that the studies that were done, that you needed to give either 21 days or 28 days, depending on the vaccine that you use, as a dosage interval. And we know that that works. And i think that most of us think that we should go with what works. Because this is a new vaccine and because this is a new process. Now, again, if we find out over time that the information and the scientist, as we understand it, changes, we can change guidance. But right now, we ought to stick with the science. I want to talk with a new National Poll thats out, that your organization partnered with some others on. It finds that of americans under the age of 50, 1 in 5 rural, republican, black americans and women, theyre the ones among those unlikely to get the covid vaccine. What did the poll find was behind their lack of confidence . And what are the things that we can do to try to fix that so that more people will get vaccina vaccinated . I think there are some important tips. First of all, we need to tailor our message to the audience. Understand what peoples perceptions and how they hear things and how the information has been presented to them. Explain the benefits of getting the vaccine, not just the consequences of the vaccine. Talk about the people behind the vaccine. Make sure that people understand that these are american scientists. This was produced in america. This was a made in america product. And avoid judgmental language when talking to people about this. And understand, if you dont know where they are, ask them. Ask them, what are your concerns . And address those directly. I like that point about avoiding judgmental language. I think thats key in trying to convince people who might have a lot of skepticism. Dr. Georges benjamin, thank you so much for joining us this morning. We appreciate it. Thank you. The biden team slamming the 12 republican senators who now say theyll challenge his win. Bidens Campaign Team is now hitting back, slamming the 12 republican senators who say they will object to wednesdays Electoral College vote. His Campaign Calling it a stunt. Meanwhile, there are reports that the pentagon will resume briefings for bidens Transition Team after being left in the dark on important intelligence, according to his Incoming National security adviser. Msnbc reporter mariano sotomayor is in delaware with the latest. Good morning, mariana. Reporter good morning, joe. Yes, those pentagon briefings, just another roadblock, as biden put it earlier this past week, that the biden transition has to overcome in just the days that are left until biden is inaugurated as president. Those briefings resuming, but the transition Still Holding out hope that those who come to the table actually provide adequate amount of information. Biden in a speech last week noting the fact that these things have consequences, especially when it comes to national security. Things could fall through the cracks, as he mentioned, and it could leave the u. S. Exposed to vulnerabilities and threats from other countries and the Incoming Administration could be unprepared for said moments. Another issue that theyre dealing with is the fact that the office of management and budget also really not helping them out during this transition process, and transition officials also noting that they are going to be late, likely, in delivering a budget. That is something that the Administration Every single year has to propose to congress in the first early months, First Quarter of the year. That is just a couple of things, not to mention the fact that the Trump Administration continuing to put some other road blocks, including these midnight rules, just lastminute changes that will affect a number of policies. The biden Transition Team already saying that right after biden is inaugurated on january 20th, they will submit a memo that will freeze any kind of rule that has not been instituted yet. Joe . Mariana, lets talk about wednesday. What impact can we expect these republican senators to have on certifying the Electoral College vote . Theyre not going to be able to overturn the election results, but does this send a message about what President Biden can expect in thefection four yea n dealing with republicans . Reporter yeah, youre right when you say that this is really just a formality. Its not going to necessarily overturn the Electoral College results. And the biden campaign, as you noted, said in a statement, more or less, said, biden will still be sworn in on january 20th, noting that they are baseless claims that have been literally litigated in courts. And they have not found any instances of fraud of any kind. But as you mentioned, it does bring to the table the fact that biden will have to deal with a very divided senate and also house, even though the house, obviously, is under democratic majority. But heres the thing, biden since the primaries, when he was trying to differentiate himself from these progressive democrats, he would say, i am the guy, i am the one who can actually bring republicans to the table. I have relationships with them. But this also proving, hes not even president yet, he will have to deal with these thorns on his side for the next four years, joe. And well learn this week whos going to take control of the senate. Mariana sotomayor, thank you so much. In the battle against the coronavirus, december brought a heartbreaking and recordbreaking death count. January is already oncourse to top it, by a lot. The u. S. Has seen more than 20 million cases of covid19, with deaths from the virus now surpassing 350,000. But that didnt stop some from disregarding safety practices, still, with large indoor gatherings and holiday parties, without masks, like what you see right here, hosted by donald trump jr. Nbcs Steve Patterson is in los angeles with more on why experts are warning that the darkest days have yet to come. Reporter yeah, joe, cory, this is one of the busiest travel days of the year, coming off the deadliest month in the pandemic that weve seen so far. More people died in december than in october and november combined. And now Health Officials are worrying, with all of this travel, it could lead to a surge on top of a surge. On the eve of one of the nations busiest travel days, Health Officials worry americans returning from a Winter Holiday could spark a new surge, with hospital workers already at a breaking point. I have never seen a Health Care System pushed to the level that were at. Reporter more than 77,000 americans died of covid in december alone, the deadliest month so far. Across the country, field hospitals are now being put into place to help with the surge, as some researchers project 115,000 could die this month. What people need to understand is that some 15 of people who get covid will end up in the hospital and half of those people will probably die. Despite the desperate warnings, large gatherings across the country were spotted ringing in the new year, including party at maralago, attended by donald trump jr. And several parties in new york and hardhit los angeles busted by law enforcement. The risk that you take will result will result in death of somebody else in your community. Reporter on top of a new record daily case count in florida, the Sunshine State is now the third to report a new more contagious covid variant, including colorado and california. More politics now with just two days to go before the Georgia Senate runoffs. The four candidates are making their final pitches to voters. But as nbc political reporter sah sahil kapoor puts it, donald trump is throwing one grenade after another into the races. T meantime, Kamala Harris arrives in georgia today to help turn out the vote ahead of joe biden and President Trumps visits tomorrows. Julia jester joins us now with the latest. Good morning, julia. Reporter good morning, joe. Theres a lot of energy on both sides here on the ground. And for democrats, their closing message here is one of that basically, the republicans have been in disarray, right . So theyre capitalizing on these factions here in georgia, where you have folks trying to stay loyal to President Trump. And as you mentioned, think that the election should be challenged. And others that are aligned more so with governor brian kemp, who trump has been tweeting about, as well as the secretary of state here, reaffirming the results of the election. Now, a new message that has really been part of democrats closing message here is on the stimulus checks. And basically saying that while loeffler have said they support 2,000 stimulus checks, theyre not doing anything to make mcconnell do something about that. And therefore, loeffler and perdue are the only reason that Mitch Mcconnell still has a job. Meanwhile, the republicans are having the opposite message that theyre the only way to defend america against socialism and radical democrat agenda. They are saying that they can hold the line in that Senate Majority and protect President Trumps legacy. And so while democrats are hitting the ground and their ground game to really turn out the vote here, republicans are bringing some heavy hitters into this state. Today, theres a save america rally featuring a lot of top gop surrogates, including ted cruz, who was on the campaign trail, echoing the message that i just mentioned. Take a listen to what he said about loeffler and perdue. Look, im angry about the abuse of power that weve seen. Voter fraud is a real problem. Its a persistent problem. Its a problem in journgeorgia across the country. But the answer isnt to stay home and hand control of the government over to the radical left and over to the extreme socialists. The answer is to stand up and defend the state of georgia and defend our rights. Reporter and so even as republicans are attacking the Election Integrity here, trump and his allies, theyre still trying to convince their voters and his base to show up on tuesday. Joe . All right, julia jester reporting from georgia. Thank you. Our next guest founded an organization to help maximize voter turnout in georgia and educate the community. Joining us now is founder of georgia standup, debora scott. Debora, good morning. Thanks for being in with us. And i want to talk about the woman of the moment, debora. Kamala harris, we know shes headed over to georgia today to campaign on behalf of democrats john ossoff and raphael warnock. Could impact could her visit in particular have in these last few days . Well, i know that black women are particularly excited about Kamala Harris and i know that theyre going to come out to see her and listen to her. But theyre more excited about the attention that has been brought to women of color issues. Black women have an agenda. And were clear about that, you know, weve done to work to make sure that the vote gets turned out. And theyre going to hold people accountable. So i think that theyre very excited to hear what she has to say, but theyre more excited to hear about whats happening at the kitchen table. Yeah, theres a lot of enthusiasm, which i do want to touch on, but i want to ask you this first. The president has repeatedly attacked the georgia runoffs, calling them invalid, illegal. Weve heard plenty of reaction from politicians and pundits on this. But really the only folks that matter are the voters. What are you hearing from georgians and how are they reacting to the president s attacks . You know, absolutely. So the voters are fatigued. When you look at the mass quantity of mail that we have all received and the phone calls and the door knocks, people are tired of this election. However, they are not tired of fighting for their own rights. So theyre excited about whats going to happen tuesday. Weve already had 3 million voters to come out to vote, stand in lines in inclement weather and theyre willing to do it again on tuesday. People are excited. Theyre a little confused about some of the Voter Suppression tactics that are still taking place in 2020 or 2021, now. But theyre going to be resolved and theyre going to turn back out. Yeah, many voters saying they are resolved to make sure that their vote is counted, no matter how many times they have to go do it and stand in line. And speaking of, those records that have been smashed by early voting, what do you think this could mean for the final results . I think not only for january, for tuesday, i think the results will prove that people, when they vote their values, they win. And theyre willing to do the work to turn it out. So i think that were going to see a massive turnout on tuesday and i think were going to see the progressives win. However, i dont think anyone should take it for granted. Its a ground game at this point. Its every door that is unlocked, every piece of l literatu literature, every conversation that is had on the ground is really going to matter. Fortunately, the weather is going to be beautiful, so we hope that people will turn out in massive numbers. But were not going to be deterred by Voter Suppression and voter depression. Yeah, democrats certainly do remember that the day of turnout usually is largely republican, so theyll have to try to make up for it ahead of it. And another thing that is very cool to see is a lot of Younger Voters have been turned out by this election, as well. What do you think is behind that enthusiasm . And more importantly, do you think it will be sustained beyond this election cycle . Absolutely i mean, i am so excited about the young people that had not had the opportunity to vote in november that turned out so far this year. And then those that turned out in november, they are excited. Many of those young folks were involved with some of the protests that happened this summer. And so what we try to do is to teach them that they have to vote your values and vote your power. So the next step beyond protest is actually getting out, registering to vote, and getting out to vote. So were excited about whats going to happen between the young people and between black women turning out and turning out our base. Its going to be an exciting time. Were nonpartisan, but we are so excited about the potential for really changing the way that georgia has been seen and not reflecting the values of the entire state. So i think that this is going to be an exciting time and were looking forward to it. One of the amazing results to come out of the previous election in georgia are all of these organizations that are trying to help strengthen the vote there. Debora scott with georgia stand up. Speaking of, for many, the new year brings a new sense of hope and aspirations. But 2020 was unlike any other. It was the year of the pandemic, upending every life, young or old, healthy or weak, rich or poor. And for this 12yearold girl, it was a year of selfreflection, a reminder of all the Little Things taken for granted. So, audrey cho wrote her future self a letter to open every new year to remind herself whats important in life. She writes in part, i am struggling and would do anything to get out of 2020 and this pandemic. Remember, everything is replaceable and unimportant, but people are the only true thing that matter in this modernd world. Joining us now, audrey cho, who wrote that letter, and her mom, julia. Thank you so much for being with us. Audrey, the letter, so touching, so candid. Why did you decide to write this . And tell us how youre feeling now. Well, what really happened was that my mom and i were on a walk, and we decided when we were talking about how my life would be so much richer after this pandemic in so many ways, but then i told her, like, i dont know, because humans forget things so quickly. So, thats when she came up with the idea that i should probably write a letter to my future self, to remind myself never to forget. And so, later on, i was procrastinating studying for a history test, and i decided to write it. And it took me about, like, 20 minutes or a half hour. And yeah, and im feeling great now. The response has been pretty good. And, yeah. Its a great idea. I think its something a lot of us should consider doing. So, audrey, what do you miss most about life from before the pandemic . Um, well, i really miss seeing my friends probably most, because i love seeing my friends, and im missing my grandparents. I miss the sense of innocence we all used to have. Audrey, you were also inspired by your daughter. You actually found the letter on her desk. What went through your mind . Well, i was happy that she took the suggestion, because she im a writer and i suggest a lot of ideas, but she actually ran with this one and i didnt know that she had done it. And i was really actually i was really moved by the letter immediately, and it was kind of hard to know whether it was just because i was her mom, but it sort of stayed with me, and i felt compelled to share it with other people. Were you surprised by all the attention the letter got . Um, were you surprised . I was surprised, because i didnt expect some people said that they were going to read my letter every new years, and that was really surprising. It made me feel so good to know that im making a difference. That is very cool. Julia, you found this letter sitting on your daughters desk. How does audrey inspire you, especially after reading that letter . I mean, i think she inspires me because she still maintains her innocence, like, even through all this, and i think because she really knows whats important, and that really made me feel proud as a mother to read the letter and to realize that she realizes that connecting with others is more important than anything else. It is such a cool thought to say, okay, we might all be in this despair, but were not going to stay here, you know. Lets remember this, lets bottle it and take it into the future and take these lessons from it. And then let go of the rest. I think, julia, you said it best, we all need to be writing a letter like this. Julia and audrey cho, thank you for being with us this morning. Thanks for the inspiration. Thanks for having us.
