Detailing President Trumps reaction to his election defeat and his attempts to overturn the results. With one republican insider comparing him to mad king george. And new signs this morning that the reality of his election loss is setting in. The president purportedly gaming out a 2024 run, including an event during joe bidens inauguration. Were going to talk to the reporter who broke that story. Its sunday, november 29th, 2020. And were already possibly talking 2024. Im kendis gibson. Im lindsey reiser. Were live from msnbc headquarters in new york. Well try to limit the 2024 talk. We have a few years to get there. We have a team of reporters. Look at that. Thats christmas on the screen, actually. You look at these ladies. They cant see each other. One in red, one in green. We begin first with millions of people heading back home this morning after days of busy travel for the holiday. A lot of experts now concerned well be looking back at thanksgiving gatherings as superspreaders for coronavirus. Nbcs cori coffin is at a rest stop in illinois. Cori, have the roads been as packed as the airports have been . Reporter hey, guys. The roads have been way more packed than the airports. Ill break into the numbers here in a minute. I have to note, thats why i wore my red today. Were dogging about holiday travel. Glad we could coordinate. You have to coordinate. You have to have everything coordinated. Reporter absolutely. Oh, yeah. As we get towards the holidays, well light it up even better. Were here at the Lake Forest Oasis truck stop and rest stop. And this is one of the busiest in the nation, typically. This year was no different. According to aaa, travel by car was down 4. 3 over last year. Its very minimally down. And in illinois, down only 9. 3 . Some 50 million cars hitting the road for this holiday. Now, obviously, behind me, its no indication of that. We have six lanes of traffic behind me that are wideopen. Not a lot of people traveling at this hour. As we get later in the day, this will be packed. The rest stop, well show you later in the day, will be packed. When it comes to the comparison between the two, road trips vastly outweighing air travel this year, 95 of people preferring to get on the road. And the doctor i spoke with yesterday, the good news is, people are traveling in their bubbles. But the bad news is, theyre taking the bubbles and traveling across states, overstate lines. And interacting with others. Listen to what he had to say. Any sort of travel is a concern. Any sort of what we know about covid, weve learned over the last few months. We know its spread through close contact and that travel augments that spread. And so, having people travel, having people go from one area to another, gathering in groups, these are the sort of things that really harms the efforts to slow down covid. All right. So, flying was significantly down this year, guys. But tsa reports a surge in travelers in the week leading up to thanksgiving. Some 6. 8 Million People going through the airport in that week. And people did report that they planned on having smaller gatherings. They planned on having them outside and socially distanced with masks. Thats all very good news. But really, we have to wait and see on the timing of what the surge looks like after this. A little bit more good news, guys. That baby boomers also were a major population that shows more so than other populations, not to travel this year by about half. Double stay at home. And thats good news. One thnging i want to mention, quarantine, quarantine. A lot of people dont plan on quarantining after they travel. Please reconsider those decisions. Good point. Were not seeing the same travel levels as last year. But were seeing the busiest time since the pandemic started in march. Hopefully people stay within their bubbles and quarantine. Cori coffin, thank you. Lets head to washington, d. C. Right now. President trump returning to d. C. And the white house. After spend spending the last three days golfing in northern virginia. With his time, with the president ial helicopter dwindling, he used mean one to shuttle in to the course. His administration, suffering a setback. Yesterday, he went with his two sons. His administration suffered a setback, as the Pennsylvania Supreme Court rejected a republican lawsuit targeting mailin ballots. That was just a day after trump appointed federal judge, rejected the campaigns request to not declare biden the winner in the state. All the Court Battles thats taken place, the president doesnt seem too stressed out about it, at least not on the course in northern virginia. Carol lee has the details. Good morning to you. Whats the next move for this administration and this fight . They say theyre going to fight this all the way to the Supreme Court. Lets step back and look at what happened here. This is a major stepback for the trump legal effort. It comes on top from the third court of adeels, which issued a decision on friday. It was a scathing decision, saying there was no evidence here. And if youre going to make the allegations you cant just say them. You have to back it up. The president s narrow path for Legal Options just got significantly narrower. Were hearing they intend to fight on and take this from the Supreme Court. And its not clear that the Supreme Court to take this case and its not clear this is going to go anywhere. And nobody thinks, including the president privately, this is something thats going to overturn the outcome of this election, that is joe biden is president elect. Nonetheless, the president continues to make these allegations yesterday after this Court Decision came down. He was on twitter. He was saying there is massive fraud and theyre going they have tons of proof. Theyre going to put out the proof. Yet, kendis, as you know, we havent seen any of that. Not only have we seen it, but in the courts, they havent seen it. They continue to say that every time. The president s legal team gets in a courtroom and yet, the president continues to make the allegations. And its all, the overarching goal is to undermine joe bidens victory. They make the allegations on twitter but not in the courtroom themselves. Carol lee, joining us from washington, d. C. Thank you. Two months from inauguration. But theres consideration and conversations about starting the 2024 president ial race soon. Dont blame the messenger. Blame the daily beast. Theyre reporting about this. Blame the next guy. Theyre saying that trump could be planning a 2024related event for bidens inauguration day. The article reads, trump is scheming about a future White House Run is both an implicit recognition that he views his own current legal efforts as long shots and a reflection of his inherent desire to maintain political power and public attention. The daily beast reporter has that scoop. All joking aside, incredible reporting here. What have you been hearing about this event that trump wants to plan in january . Im more than happy to shoulder all of your blame. Thank you. And im sorry for not colorcoordinating. I should have gone with something more christmasy. The green book helps. Thank you. When it comes to the president s future plans and the way hes been talking with top confidants and close aides, weighs on how he could announce soon a 2024 run for the white house, assuming that biden assumes the oval office in 2021. Even the president of the United States has sunk in with him, as hes waging this legal battle to steal the election. One of the things hes kicked around with some close advisers is floating the possibility of launching, staging some sort of 2024related event on inauguration week 2021 or possibly even inauguration day, to try to steal joe bidens thunder and undermine him. And he has been he and certain members of his inner sanctum have been pulsing Top Republican donors and other republican officials over the last couple weeks, at least, sort of to feel out who could be on his side and who could be against him if he were to take another run at the white house in three of four years. This is showing the degree to which the president is trying to maintain his stroanglehold on te conservative party, even if hes lying to the American People, that im going to be around for a second term and the election was stolen from me. And it was rigged, rigged. Thats obviously just a lie, lie, lie. And the point of these lies isnt just rhetorical, isnt just to prop up the mainstream claims of massive voter fraud, which do not exist. They have realworld consequences, until recently this month. The personnel thats in the white house, run by a top trump uber loyalist, johnny mcaty, was vetting candidates, being potential appointees in a second trump term, that everyone knew wasnt going to happen. They were calling up references and running background checks all in the service of propping up an alternative reality that does not exist that the Mainstream Republican Party is invested in. Your reporting, in addition to the Washington Post reporting shows a fascinating look at what has been going on in the white house in the last 20 days. None of the president s legal efforts, though, in the meantime, to reverse the election results, have stuck. Most recently overnight in pennsylvania at the Supreme Court, the state Supreme Court there, rejectioning the election challenge headed by republicans. They sought to invalidate millions of mailin votes. When do you think trump and his republican allies will finally back down from these futile legal challenges . Some of them rhetorically and from a Public Relations standpoint have been backing down. These include top trump surrogates and outside allies including economists steven moore, steve schwartzman, who have come out and said, its over. Its time to focus on the final months of the trump era and begin the president ial transition, which has kind of begun, but not really under President Trump. In terms of his top allies of the administration, his top political lieutenants, his legal team, they show no signs yet of giving up this fight. And it doesnt seem like the president of the United States it seems like the chances are very good that he will never publicly concede that he lost. He would just lie until his last breath, that this was stolen from him because of massive projoe biden conspiracies, which we know that theres zero events within existence. All right. Asawin, we will forgive you talking 2024. If youre the man responsible for baby yoda, theres no forgiving that. Okay. Got you. Thank you. Thanks. A dangerous covid surge right now, across the country. Its hitting the st. Louis area pretty hard. They broke another hospitalization record thanksgiving week. You know, for once, you know, put other things first than your profit and greed. Health care workers were on strike demanding better pay and ppe during this wave of the pandemic. Nearly 700 nursing home employees are on the sixth day of striking. Claiming residents have had poor care and food, making it harder to combat covid cases. Longterm care facilities make up half of the covid death numbers in illinois, with more than 45,000 cases and more than 6,000 deaths. Joining us from chicago, msnbc reporter valerie castro. Valerie, good morning. Has there been any response to the strikers demands . Reporter theres not been any sort of response. We reached out to the Health Care Company that owns the group of 11 Nursing Homes that these 700 workers are employed at, Infinity HealthCare Management. They went on strike, demanding better pay after the current contract expired in late may. And the facility were standing at, city View Health Care center, accounts for 14 covid deaths according to the state health department. Workers claim they havent been given the adequate resources in the form of ppe. And they say that substitutes have been brought in to take their place. They say the substitutes arent qualified or have the same level of compassion for the residents here. Take a listen. These workers know the residents like theyre their own family. Theyve been taking care of them for many years. They know about their daughter and mother, what makes them happy. They know, you know, how to lift them. They know how to treat them. When you bring in people who dont know those things, you are going to see youre going to see a negative impact, hen when comes to the quality of care. Thats what were hearing from the inside, right now, in all of the Nursing Homes. Things are getting bad and getting worse. Thats the Union Representing the workworkers. They say infinity got 12 million from the federal care act. They say that money should go to the workers in form of pandemic pay or hazard pay. We reached out to Infinity HealthCare Management several times and received no response. Thats a special relationship that caretakers have within those Nursing Homes. Valerie castro, thank you. Lets turn to neighboring missouri and more counties are mandating wearing masks, amid a surge in covid19 cases. More than 292,000 people have tested positive there. More than 3,800 people have died. The st. Louis area broke another hospitalization record this week and forced officials to send patients to neighboring states with more space. Dr. Alexander garza is one of those on the front lines of this pandemic, in the battle in missouri. Hes head of st. Louis metropolitan Pandemic Task force. Doctor, thank you for being here. Sure. How bad is it . Well, its the worst that weve seen in the pandemic. Right now, we have over 900 patients in our hospitals. I think whats more telling is that the nurses are getting worn out from the volume of patients that are coming in and how sick they are. This mornings front page of the st. Louis dispatch says theyre overwrought and exhausted. How concerned are you about the uptick from holiday gatherings that many people had a few days ago . Were very concerned. We know we wont see those patients for a couple of weeks. They have to become infected and get sick enough to come to thoptthopt hospitals. Were at maximum capacity. When we layer on more patients on to that, its going to exceed our capacity. Weve been transferring patients outside of the metropolitan area because were just simply running out of room. This was interesting, i thought. There was a st. Louis doctor who simulated what covid19 patients see, potentially at least, before dying. That video went viral within the last couple of weeks. He made an emotional plea for people to wear a mask, social distance, or experience death. Take a look. This is what it looks like when you breathe 40 times a minute. Have an oxygen level thats dipping well below 80. This is what its going to look like. I hope that the last moments of your life dont look like this. I promise you, this is what your mother or your father or your children, when they get covid disease, will see at the end of their life. This is serious. Theres people trying to drive home the impact of this disease and the reality of it. Do you think that one helps . I think it helps a little bit. Every little bit helps. What were finding is most people are now sort of entrenched in their views. Were trying to figure out different ways we can reach people and convey too them the seriousness and the precautions they need to take to prevent the spread. You know, i think we underestimated the politicalization of mask wearing and other measures that are really putting a hamper on trying to combat the pandemic. How accurate is that . Is that in essence, in the waning moments of life, when youre seeing covid and experiencing . Ive done physicians in training. Ive done a fair amount of putting people on ventilators. Thats an accurate depiction of what people see when they come to this fork in the road, where theyre going to need to be put on a ventilator and be in intensive care. Its a very accurate description. Do you get a sense there in missouri, that youve reached the peak of this . No. According to our models, the peak will come in the next coming weeks. It depends on the amount of transmission in the community. If we continue to gather in crowds and not wear masks, things like that, the numbers will continue to go up. Thats just the way the virus works. Really, its unknown where the peak is going to occur and what that number will be. Dr. Alexander garza with a stark warning for whats ahead for missouri, and the neighboring states and this country in the next few weeks. The highest they have been in this pandemic. Theyre still not at the peak. Hopefully people will listen to that. Lets head over to the Biden Campaign in delaware right now, even though questions remain about how this transition of power will play out. The president elects team is planning how it will tackle things like health and economic devastation, caused by the pandemic. Msnbc political reporter ali vitali is there. Reporter good morning, kendis and lindsey. No sightings of joe biden. But we did see Vice President elect kamla harris touring a market in washington, d. C. There was politics and a little shopping. Theres reminders for the struggles of the Small Business community this season. On the political front, she talked about the transition thats seen, yes, coordination, between people who are currently in government at the staffing level but not between the four principal players here at the Vice President ial and president ial level. Harris was asked how the transition could go forward efficiently without contact between her and mike pence, as well as between president elect joe biden and President Trump. I asked transition advisers if they needed to see that outreach between biden and trump. They told me it was not missioncritical or necessary to them Going Forward with the transition. They did allow if trump wanted to speak to president elect biden, they would be happy to set that up. Heres what harris said when asked about it. Listen, were clear about the job we have in front of us. And the American People deserve that the Incoming Administration focuses on whats important and what is important is getting a handle on the virus opening back up our Small Businesses and focusing on the experts in all areas. As you know, weve been meeting with everyone from labor leaders to heads of fortune 500 companies. Were meeting with mayors. Were meeting with governors. Bipartisan. And thats what were going to continue to do, which is focus on the issues that the American People deserve. They are paying attention to. Reporter harris is talk about the reality for Small Business owners across the country right now. It was Small Business saturday, a time to remind people that the pandemic has really hit the Small Businesses hard. Harris is reminding us that one in four Small Businesses is on the verge of permanent closer. A yelp study found to that businesses that closed during pandemic, 60 are closed for good. And the way the virus hit along racial lines is stunning. 40 of blackowned businesses have permanently closed because of the pandemic. The reason why the biden transition has linked getting the economy back on track with controlling the pandemic is because for so many Small Business owners across the country, thats the reality. Guys . All right. Ali vitali in rehoboth beach, delaware. There will be a concrete step in the transfer of power. Joe biden will receive his first intelligence briefing tomorrow. It marks a first step in trefring responsibility for the most secure secrets. It took the white house three weeks to sign off on this, even though the president elect is typically supposed to have access to the briefings within days of the election. Paul ryan and former press secretary for john boehner. And democratic strategist and host of your primary playlist, emily. Thank you for being here. Well start with you. This move delayed for weeks. But bidens Transition Team has been rolling ahead with what they can do. How similymbolic is tomorrow . It shows that they are moving forward actively in the transition. The bidenharris Transition Team has been doing quite a bit, on the personnel side, staffing up to make sure they have, or getting people ready to staff up. Theyve announced they have been rolling out people at the cabinet level and below that. Getting resumes ready and get them in place to hit the ground running. Also on the policy side. Theyre going to work quite a bit at executive orders and action, what they can be doing day one. Yes, this is unique, to a posttrump era. But this is also not unique. This is normal that the president is coming in on the first day with things they want to do, day one. I have been talking with policy leaders on different fields. And what your reporter just pointed out, the link between getting the virus under control and getting the economy back on track, is issue number one for people in every area. Its hard to think about being asks of the government until we get the virus controlled and get the economy back on track. I want to dive into some of that reporting from the Washington Post that we keep mentioning. We talked to 32 Senior Administration officials that they sourced in the piece. In it, with his denial of the outcome, and a string of courtroom defeats, trump endangered americas democracy and threatened to undermine National Security and Public Health and duped millions of his sup pporters into believing, perhaps permanently, that biden was elected illegitimately. He was fighting hard to keep, chief among them fighting the pandemic. Do you think thats too harsh . Or do you agree with that assessment . That sounds like the donald trump weve seen for the last four years. Yeah. This transition is a total shame. The transition process, things that emily just talked about, hiring staff and the policy, thats fine. You dont need help from the outgoing administration. But getting the security briefing that the president elect is getting is really important. Thats the type of thing that only a president or president elect can do. The world has been watching what weve been doing. Theyve been watching this circ circus. Its embarrassing for allies. Theres countries out there who are not our friends, who may be wanting this. Im glad its moving forward. The way the president is acting is not surprising at all. This is who hes been. His refusal to accept reality is probably the least surprising part of all of this. He surrounds himself with people who are going to tell him what he wants to hear. So, he creates his own reality and thats what were seeing. The post goes on to say that four days after the election, every major News Organization projected that biden would win the presidency. And around the same time, some lawyers around trump began to suddenly disappear from the effort, in what some aides characterized an effort to protect reputations. A Senior Administration official said literally the fringey of the fringe are willing to do the pressers. Emily, first you and then brendan. If anybody was on the fence, do you think the press conferences changed the minds in the direction of trumps favor . You dont think the four seasons landscaping with Rudy Giuliani is going to change it . You remembered it. It stuck. Oh, i think ill never forget it. I think for his reporters, they truly believe what the president says. Maybe the surrogates will impact the republicans for now, for the runoffs in georgia. I think it will impact their support across the board to work with president elect biden to get things done. I think the thing about the transition to remember is not just the personnel, not just the daily briefing. Theres parts of the government that are hollowed out. At the state department, theres offices in hhs, health and human services, which oversees medicare, medicaid, population control, pandemic relief, oversee the vaccination, theres no people in those offices. When i talk about personnel, its not like, who is going to show up on day one. They need to find out, is there anybody in the office that can tell them what is happening in the offices . That needs to start immediately. And the trump team is starting but its spotty, to access information. I want to give you the final word, brendan. Yeah, the whole process, all of the challenges, its deeply embarrassing to watch, as a republican. I really wish that the president would move forward in a way with some dignity. I dont expect him to do that anymore. But its really dangerous for the country, what hes doing, convincing so many millions of people that their vote doesnt count, that elections are rigged. Theres real consequences to that. Not just for the country but in his own interests, for republicans to believe that. Its harmful. So, yeah. I hope that we can move on from this quickly. Brendan buck and emily, it was a pleasure to talk to both of you. Thank you for your candor. Thanks, lindsey. Theres a new technique thats picking up traction here in the northeast and overseas, as well. It relies on saliva samples rather than nose and throat swabs. Willem marx is in london. Walk us through the technique and the response youre hearing. Reporter kendis, i dont know if youve had one of the swabs shoved up your chose to the back of your throat, its not uncomfortable. And for children, its a bit of an obstacle when it comes to regular testing. What theyve been doing in the u. K. , the British Government is backing a trial where kids spit into a test tube. That allows scientists to extract the viral r a and diagnosis the sample. If it comes back positive, the kid can be taken out of school and the class. Thats been trialed in a number of schools here in free. In the u. S. , whats going on, on top of that collection difference, theyre also doing something called pool testing. By an entire classroom of samples is tested at the same time. If theres a positive case, they can then dive in, identify the individual and obviously that leads to selfisolation. Whats so interesting is it increases the efficiency, reduces the cost. And one of the driving forces behind this kind of testing is yale medical school. Theyve been doing Research Since the start of the pandemic. I spoke to ann wily, one of the researchers on that effort. They received authorization in the fda. They are passing out the testing techniques to dozens of labs in 20 states. I asked her if she thought this approach could be scaled up successfully. The science is there. At the state level, the federal level, as more people are seeing this and they can see it as a reliable option or a cheaper option, or a physical option, having this support from, you know, higherup levels will help us get it rolled out further. With the pool tests, they come at 15 per student per week, far more affordable than most of the other tests out there. Were all looking at different options. Willem, the u. K. At fidelity, a change in plans is always part of the plan. It has been six months since the the death of george floyd at the hands of police in minneapolis. Floyds death, of course, sparked a public outcry against Police Brutality and systemic racism promising changes to law enforcement. Now some are wondering what changes were actually made and where are we heading from here. Joining us right now is reverend al sharpton, the civil rights activist and founder of the National Action network and host of msnbcs politics nation joining us. Reverend al, thank you for being here. Its a busy sunday for you. Theres still a lot of division in some cities six months after floyds death like minneapolis where floyd was killed over changes to policing and budgets. Do you think there will be a compromise to these issues . I think it will depend a lot on whether laws are changed. Compromise at best would be temporary. Laws have a more lasting affect on real change, which is why many of us have been pushing for the george floyd policing and justice act to be passed by the u. S. Senate as it has already been passed by the house of representatives. We have over 200,000 people march in august and have been concentrating on that. Now that the administration of joe biden and Kamala Harris is coming in, we expect that to be a priority. Civil rights leaders are working to meet mr. Biden to keep that. We will have debates city by city until we have federal law. That is what happened in the 60s with the civil rights act. We need the george floyd act passed for federal law which mandates policing around the country. Reverend al, what do you think are the biggest changes that came out of the last six months . Yes, you have athletes and the nfl that are wearing social justice messages, sporting teams are aware theres racism out there. But what are the big changes you would say . I think the change in consciousness and awareness is important, the fact that we receive allies in various communities sometimes marches that ive led and seen. Increasingly in locals there is changes. The eric gardner antichoke became law because of the new York State Senate and the speaker of the house of the assembly was able to work with Governor Andrew Cuomo to make it law. Some states did things, but that does not lead to a national law. I think all of these build up to a new day nationally, and i think thats the challenge we have in the biden era to make the movement lead to real substantive legislative change. And, rev, weve heard from leaders like jim clyburn say he felt the defund the Police Movement potentially hurt democrats at the ballot box. Do you agree with that and where do you think that reform needs to be in a biden era . I think the misuse of the slogan certainly i think funds need to be changed. I think you cannot keep investing funds in the same thing and expect different results. You must deal with funding programs toward Mental Health and towards the training of police. I think that the slogan that was intended one way was misused by the opposition. So in that regard i agree the slogan hurt. I do not agree that the intent nor the changing of where the funding goes and the focus away from Community Policing i do not think that was wrong from the beginning. I was part of it and remain part of it. Reverend al, it has been six months, and i always appreciate when we talk on a sunday. I know things are virtual now. Whats the message of the day . The message is that you must turn your pain into power. We must not forget that george floyd was choked to death and we must get the knee off the neck of all black americans and all americans discriminated against and we have the forecast of a new day but the knee is still on our neck and we need to get the knees off all of our necks and make america better. I hope joe biden and Kamala Harris will keep those commitments. Reverend al, we will be watching politics nation today, thank you. Thank you. Up next, white house veteran john podesta weighs in on the biden transition. Youre all, youre all i need youre all, youre all i need as long as i got you then baby you know that youve got me, oh yea.
