Last time is now stretching down the street. Polls dont open for another hour until 8 00 a. M. At a library in durham North Carolina, it seems the voting is through the roof. And here is how the mayor, the attorney general talked about it. And you can almost feel the energy. Many have already voted by mail. So if you put it together, Something Like 10 to 12 of the electorate has already voted as of today. Its amazing. And so we expect the voter enthusiasm to continue. This is the first weekend of early voting and as you can see, the lines have already started to form here in durham. And 12 of registered voters have already voted, that is yesterday midday and now almost 15 and we should expect that number to grow. And i want to say one more thing about the importance of North Carolina, both President Trump and joe biden, they are mustwin states for both of them and it is also to determine control of the senate. Now, joe biden has a lot of big names coming to North Carolina on his behalf today, Kerry Washington, the actress, will be in durham, right around here, to encourage people to get out to vote. Kamala harris was supposed to be there on friday, except for that covid19 scare. Give me a little bit of perspective. When does early voting begin, or what time does it begin where you are . And based on where youre standing, how far does that line extend right now . So the line, heres the entrance, and you can see, i can see, through the window, all of the election workers, who are getting prepared. And it goes down the stairs, and back down the street. So it is starting to form. E strt so it is starting to form. There are 14 places to vote in durham county, and im hearing in so many of the these polling location, the lines are this line everywhere. People brought their chairs. They are prepared. Yes. They really are ready for this. And at this early hour, with still an hour to go before, i would be curious, to take a look at your shot at the top of the hour, to see if that line continues to grow. Lee ann waldwell for us in raleighdurham, North Carolina, thank you. President trump ramping up his campaign schedule, set to visit seven states, in the leadup to thursdays president ial debate. The Campaign Blitz picks up today in muskegon, michigan. Over there near grand rapids, in the western part of the state. Thats where we find nbcs monica alba, monica, good morning to you, what are we hearing from the president amid this final stretch . A lot, kendis and lindsey, we should point out, this is an area of the state that not many candidates or even sitting president s have visited, and its a place, a county, that Hillary Clinton actually won in 2016, but the president of course took the state narrowly, part of his critical rust belt victory, that propelled him to the white house. So michigan is a very important place, all across the midwest, really, for the president , thats why he will be here later today, and then in wisconsin, as well. But the current polling really shows an uphill battle for the president here, and for his reelect efforts. The president though, for his part, is predicting some optimism about what he thinks he is going to see on november 3rd and beyond. Take a listen to a little bit of that flavor he provided last night in macon, georgia. We are doing an incredible job in this country. This country is great. And we have spirit like nobodys had spirit. And it is going to be a red wave next week. And theyre talking about it. Despite the president s predictions there, that is not what is reflected in national polling, or in those battleground states. Still, the president will be making that pick in person, he has a very busy campaign schedule, coming up, after being in the midwest today, and hes going to head out west tomorrow, to do some key fundraising, but also to do rallies in nevada, from there, he will go to arizona, pennsylvania, and North Carolina, all ahead of thursdays critical general election debate. The first one was so intense, between the two candidates, the second one was ultimately scrapped and then we had the dualing town halls, so this is really the second headtohead faceoff, moderated by our own nbcs Kirsten Welker, we look forward to that, in nashville on thursday, but to put it into a little bit of perspective what the president is finding here when he comes here later today to muskegon, this is a state that has already seen a spike in coronavirus cases, and as you guys have seen, all week long, from many of these rallies, thousands continue to gather, packed shoulder to shoulder, with no social distancing, and limited if any at all mask usage. They will be handed out but they will not be required and that shows what a difference in campaigning the Trump Pence Team is doing versus the biden harris, you saw the images of the drivein rally last night that the Vice President did in michigan, and tonight youre going to be seeing very different images from the president , where again, concerning spikes, especially across the midwest, continue to worry Health Officials, to the point where several doctors here in the state urge the Trump Campaign to cancel tonights rally, and that is not happening, he will be heading here in a couple of hours. Kendis and lindsey . Monica, you mentioned Kirsten Welker moderating the debate, and the topic, fighting covid, american families, race in america, climate change, national security, and leadership. 17 days to go. The president is going to be in seven states in the next week. Nbcs monica alba, in muskegon, michigan, thank you. Joe biden is keeping busy as well, he was in the battleground state of michigan. You see it there. A unique way, totally 2020 way of campaigning there. With the drivein. It was a mobilization car rally, as theyre calling it. Of course, hes trying to flip the state that President Trump won narrowly in 2016. And nbc has more on that. Following the Biden Campaign. What was the main message that he was trying to take to voters there with this drivein rally . Good morning, both of you. Yes, that the cars gathered there it reminds me of the dnc in wilmington, a couple of months ago, this very 2020 wave bringing voters together to hear from the candidates and joe biden last night in detroit, the message of unity is what he was trying to bring across, draw those contrasts with donald trump, and monica just mentioned this dualing town hall that we were talking about earlier this week, where you can see the rhetoric difference, you can see the contrast between the democrat and republican running for president this time around, and so joe bidens message was talking about division, and some. Hatred that hes seen coming from donald trump, not denouncing White Supremacy all in the background of michigan where we just found out about this plot to kidnap the governor gretchen whitmer, so this is the background of all of this that joe biden is addressing and on top of that, he is stressing a message of health care and this is something that democrats have been talking about for a long time and in the last week with the judge barrett hearings on capitol hill which is not too far from where were standing right now, democrats are very united on pushing this message of protecting the Affordable Care act. That is something that is top of mind for a lot of voters. And of course, joe biden is someone who is in the obama administration, working on this policy, very intimately, and it is a message that he is very close with, and something that he talked about last night as well. Take a listen to what he told voters in michigan. Its about wiping out obama care, wiping it off the books. Because their nominee said in the past that the law should be struck down. Its going to take away Health Care Coverage for 20 million americans. Ill build on the Affordable Care act. We can choose to keep your private insurance. As well as offer medicaidlike public options which will give private insurers real competition. We can only do this if we come together as a country. Abraham lincoln told you that a house divided cannot stand. Today, trust is ebbing. Hope seems elusive. Instead of healing, were being ripped apart. I refuse to let that happen. Joe biden in the very end there talking about that message of unity against division. And of course, talking about health care. You heard some of the cars honking there in the background. As the applause. That is kind of where were at these days. So obviously a message, you know, on health care, a topic that is very much resonating with voters. And as we look ahead, like monica had mentioned, a very Chaotic Campaign schedule for donald trump, making a lot of stops in this final stretch as we head toward election day, and on the democratic side, youre seeing joe biden and Kamala Harris jump back on to the campaign trail this coming week and you also see some big names, barack obama will be coming out to stump for this ticket and some celebrities like Kerry Washington and Elizabeth Warren making stops on behalf of the candidate as well coming up in the next week. Magic johnson as well. It is sort of like a throwback, if youre at a Poetry Reading and people are like snapping. Poetry slam. Yes. Yes. Interesting. Thank you. Joining us now is morgan, White House Reporter at the hill, so morgan, good morning to you, lets talk about that chaotic schedule from the president. Does that really show how much he is playing defense right now . You wrote an article in fact, about it, in which you say the sum total of trumps travel schedule reveals the extent to which the president is scrambling to recreate his 2016 coalition. With less than three weeks to go before november 3rd. Right. Hes traveling to many states that he won in 2016, and you know, we expect him to travel to states like florida, michigan, pennsylvania, those are very narrow victories for the president , florida is especially a crucial state for him in his reelect, and hes taking on the seniors there and we have seen him travel to states including iowa and georgia this week, very notable, and he won those states pretty handily in 2016 against Hillary Clinton so it does show that he is playing defense in states that she be comfortable with at this stage. So is this swing state push that is taking place right now, too little too late . It is still 17 days, theres plenty of time, and is it too little too late, to run, when more than 21 million americans have already cast ballots . He has limited time, certainly, and you know, that first debate was widely viewed by republicans as a missed opportunity, there was no second debate, those town halls took place instead, and theres only that third debate, or second debate, i guess now, to make the case against joe biden. We do see a lot of people going out and voting early. The one thing i would note, that it has seemed in many areas to be democrats, and i think polls show that republicans are more likely to vote in person and that might mean that republicans are waiting to election day to vote but there is certainly a ticking clock for trump. There are limited opportunities for him to turn this race around in his favor. I want to play for you something that has gained a lot of traction from President Trumps town hall on nbc. The president refusing to disavow qanon. Lets listen. I know nothing about qanon. I just played i know very little you told me but what you tell me doesnt necessarily make a fact. I hate to say that. I know nothing about it. I know they have very much against pedophelia. They fight it very hard. But i know nothing about it. What i do hear about it is that they are very strongly against pedophilia and i agree with, that i mean i do agree with that. But theyre not satanic pedophiles. I dont know that. You dont know that . You just said the nodding head woman just agreed with him also. The whole night. Yes. And you know, but morguen in the first debate, we saw the president tell White Supremacists and i believe it was the proud boys stand back and stand by and now this. How damaging is this to the president . Well, these controversial comments that he makes really overtake the debate, and the town hall, in this case, and we saw headlines come out of this that were about his refusal to disavow qanon, and you know, it is very similar to that first debate, when you saw his words about the proud boys and talk to people, experts in this area that really say it kind of gives oxygen to the conspiracy theory, so no, its just, sort of negative, for the president. Added more than one million cases in just the last three weeks. Several midwestern states are seeing record increases and higher averages than at any point in the pandemic. Nbcs Erin Mclaughlin is live in murray, utah, south of salt lake city. Good morning, what can you tell us . Good morning, lindsey, well the situations here in utah, it is dire, and that according to the state governor. Late last night, one of the largest hospitals in the state announced it has run out of regular icu beds. This as Health Officials are pleading with people to wear masks, to limit their social gatherings, and the number of people at family gatherings, with friends, as the state remains for the most part open, Even High School football is in play. Utahs friday night lights burning bright, despite the escalating health crisis. For the kids, it helps them to have a bit of normalcy. On the scoreboard, it ticks down, so does the coronavirus dashboard, the Record Number of daily confirmed cases. The positivity rates up 14 . And the Health Care System on the brink. On friday, Health Officials said more covid19 patients were hospitalized than ever before. It is clearly spilling over from the younger image group who tend not to get severe disease to the older age groups who are more vulnerable. How concerning is this . We can find more beds. But the staffing is the concern. Utahs one of more than three dozen states struggling to contain an increase in cases. And wisconsin, the average daily number of deaths tripled. Icu beds now at 90 capacity. In florida, a record high number of deaths, in the last 24 hours. A potential vaccine unlikely before election day. On friday, pharmaceutical giant pfizer published an open letter saying the company may know if its vaccine is effective by the end of october. Assuming positive data, the drug giant will apply for emergency authorization the third week of november. Until then, Health Officials pleading with the public to slow the spread. In boston, the city is planning. Socialize through zoom if you can. The pressure is to continue to keep our distance, it comes as ze anna left a michigan hospital after 196 days. I was unconscious for about two and a half months. I really dont remember it. But i sure am thankful. A reminder just how serious covid19 can be. My life and our lives have changed forever. Covid19 is real. And its deadly. I was speaking to the principal hosting that High School Football game, you saw at the beginning of the piece and he said the players are not regularly tested if at all. He says that his high school did have to shut down temporarily due to a covid19 outbreak. It since reopened. And they are taking every precaution mandated by the utah health department. Both on and off the field. Guys . All right. Live in murray, utah, thank you. We could also start with testing the players. Im just saying. Joining us right now, is dr. Daniel, a pediatric emergency medicine physician, and a bio defense and Public Health expert. Doctor, thank you for being here. Many say the new surge in infections across the country means the u. S. Is in a third wave of covid19 infections. Is that whats happening from your perspective . And why are we seeing another round of increasing infections . Good morning, thanks for having me. Well, were seeing a lot of infections because we predicted it. And our behavior hasnt changed and our leadership hasnt changed. With a significant change nationwide. We have said that there will be more cases, and it is coming home to roost. We even predict more, even with my personal goal, in terms of what we will be seeing, we will be seeing 25 or so million cases an thats being modest by the end of the year. With more deaths and i think well be approaching maybe 355, almost 400,000 deaths, unfortunately. So this is something serious that weve been seeing a lot. And the spread continues. But yes, weve seen a lot of cases, and well see more cases, unfortunately. Doctor, we talk about washing our hands and wearing a mask, but theres also a new study finding that coronavirus can survive on common surfaces for 28 days. And also, theres a study talking about how long the virus can last in lower temperatures. So i personally stopped wiping down nye my groceries, mostly because i ran out of wipes but what should we concerned about . Pretty much surfaces that were looked at, different cardboard, hard surfaces, bottom line is people just need to really just clean their surfaces, as best they can. The cold weather has made it where the virus tends to survive a little bit more. We know that a combination between the cold weather and the fact that we have people mixing, we have thanksgiving, we have christmas, we have halloween, and we have all of these things going on, and students are going to be returning back to home, they are going to be traveling, mixing even more, and add that on an election year, where there may be some civil unrest, it just doesnt look good. And i dont want to be pessimistic. Very much a realist. I used to be very optimistic but this year, it has challenged us significantly and wiping surfaces and washing your hands and doing the best you can do. Because its here and coming. You said this whole year, but are you optimistic about the next few months . In terms of the cases . No. Im not. Okay. The World Health Organization says that remdesivir and three other treatments, and weve heard so much about, including from the president , well, the w. H. O. Says they have little or no effect in reducing the coronavirus deaths. What do you make of that . So i tweeted about this yesterday. And you have to take it with a gran of salt. We have known this, it is not really any major news, that for remdesivir, at least for patients who have severe disease, it may not be really working, were not so sure, we just dont know enough, thats what the facts are and with that said, the study itself, it is a preprint, which means it wasnt peer rvd and it has limitations and you have to put that in context, and with that said, you have to understand, that there werent, you know, major testings that were done, so we never actually confirmed all of the cases that were diagnosed at the multicenter trial. This was a solidarity study. And the data has shown that multiple different antivirals and treatments that weve used did not reduce mortality. It did not reduce the hospital stay. And it did not reduce your chance of getting on a ventilator. What does that all mean in english . Bottom line, the severe cases, it is not really working. And we dont know. Now, the study has to be peer reviewed, and the data has to be claimed, and it has to be double blinded, which it wasnt, so it is not as clear, i wouldnt say it doesnt work per se, i would say in severe case, the patients, it probably doesnt reduce their mortality, and prevent them from getting on a ventilator, and you actually have to probably start the medications very early. It makes sense. If the virus causes an infection, and it has an inflammatory response, and if you start the medication early, you may be able to prevent the progression. Which is apparently what the president s doctors did apparently. Thank you, doctor. Appreciate your time. What to make of the long lines and recordbreaking turnout. Politically talking though, the race is really tightening there, and the latest polls have put that senate race there, with Jaime Harrison and Lindsey Graham, theyve moved it from lean republican to a tossup, thats a major major thing there in south carolina. Neck and neck. Lets go three hours north to durham, North Carolina, where nbcs Leeann Caldwell is live and you have an update on the growing lines for early voting this morning. Reporter yes, lindsey, so every time i talk to you, i come back to you, the line gets longer and longer. Weve seen it stretching down the street now. And polls are open here for another 30 minutes or so. Not until 8 00. And i would introduce to you one family who is standing in line. We have darryl, and monique, and how come you guys decided to vote early today and why did you come early to stand in line . Weve been doing this for a long time. And it beats all of the madness on election day. But still, come out on election day, and vote, if you cant get out now, the early voting works. Great. And monique, what about you . You say you got an absentee ballot ballot but you decided not to use it. I did get an absentee ballot ballot, but i decided at the last minute, it was too important and i had to do this in person. And you still have more trust in the system to do it in person. Yes. Than by putting your ballot in the mail. Yes. And so kendis and lindsey, ive hear that over and over again, from voters yesterday, i was in raleigh, and then in durham, that they could vote by absentee ballot by mail but they just decided that this time, they needed to come in person, to make sure their vote counted. And i spoke with a person who is first in line and i asked them, why did you guys get here at 6 00, when the polls didnt open until 8 00 and they had two answer, the first one they thought it was safer because of covid, fewer beam have come in before them, so they could vote and also they said this is the most important election in their lifetime. And they wanted to make sure that donald trump is no longer president. Kendis, lindsey . Just kind of fascinating to kind of watch, as the line has grown, in the last hour and a half, and those people came so prepared, with their chairs, warm clothes. Like they knew there would be a long line. Democracy at work there in durham. Thank you. Absolutely. North carolina by the way is one of 41 states, where early voting is under way. And joining us right now, susan, republican strategist and Senior Adviser for the Lincoln Project and bazos, democratic strategist and former executive director of the new york state democratic party. Welcome. Good to see you again on this saturday. Thank you. So far the susan, the turnout that you have seen, frankly lopsided accordinged to the associated press, democrats are outvoting republicans by a two to one ratio from what were seeing in those states. Is this a function of enthusiasm . And likely to even out on election day . Or what . Well, i think its definitely a sign of enthusiasm. Its also a sign of were in a pandemic and people want to vote early, to avoid lines. Come election day. Because theyre concerned. And it also is a sign of how the Biden Campaign has run its campaign. Lets not forget, they have been operating a virtual campaign, and talking to voters about the pandemic and voting for many months now. I mean if you want to get an idea and compare it, look at the Democratic Convention and then look at the Trump Convention or the republican convention. One was prepared for it. And it looked spectacular. The other had to put it together in three weeks. And didnt have much luck. And you know, again, another thing to consider, is that republicans do a big Absentee Voting Program so it shouldnt be necessarily this outweighed although i do expect the numbers to get closer in some of swing states. And an oped in the New York Times this week, about how biden isnt out of the woods, saying four of the six states that trump won by fewer than five points in 2016 allow voters to register by party. Arizona, florida, North Carolina, and pennsylvania. And in recent months, there have been substantially more republicans added to the rolls in each of them except in arizona. And he goes on to say democratic requests for absentee ballots have not reached the level that surveys suggest will be needed for the party to cast ballots at full strength. So bazol, is he being alarmist or is this something to be concerned about . Listen, every time i speak about this election, i make sure to tell everybody that they should not be comfortable, this he should not be complacent, its not a time to rest on our hawn ofs, that anything can happen on election day and i know that, because i still remember my tears the night of four years ago, and so this is still a race that i think you can look at, and say that there is a credible enthusiasm, incredible enthusiasm on the ground. To susans point, the Biden Campaign has consistently told voters to make a plan to vote. But i also think that it speaks to a very important point about where we are in this country, that you have people waiting in line for hours because theyre concerned about their ability to exercise their right to vote. Which is a bedrock of our democracy. And you add that with some of the concerns that have been raised recently, about how judges across the country have actually been restricting the peoples ability to vote, and restricting their rights, and we see that going back into the 2013, with the gutting of the Voting Rights act, so while it is great to see that people are enthusiastic, that the Biden Campaigns message has gotten out, its also encouraging to see that folks, that people in this country, that voters are mindful of the challenges and the hurdles that theyll have to battle and overcome, just to exercise their basic rights. So no, no one is complacent. And i think you can see that from the lines. So all of that said, you know, basil, the polls have been looking fairly good, if you can believe the polls for biden as they did for Hillary Clinton four years ago but there are some factors in bidens favor that exists now that actually didnt exist for clind are clinton back in 2016. I think thats true. And there are a lot of, theres a lot of public analysts that would agree with that. And i would also say that joe bidens campaign and Kamala Harriss presence on the ticket has done a lot in terms of being able to provide for voters a sense of what his vision will be, for a country thats frankly, it has been in chaos, and ive said this before, i think donald trump has done more in the last two weeks to i guess dovetail bidens message, without biden even having to speak on it. And so you know, you have voters looking at that, and theyre responding to that, and saying, you know what, i may not, i may not love everything that joe biden stands for, the democrats stand for, but i need to get back to some sense that our country is going in the right direction, and that carries a tremendous amount of weight. I want to play a moment for both of you and get your reaction. This week, we saw a moment at the conclusion of the Senate Judiciary hearing for Amy Coney Barrett, Supreme Court nomination. Lets watch. Mr. Chairman, i just want to thank you, this has been one of the best set of hearings that ive participated in, and i want to thank you for your fairness, and the opportunity of going back and forth, it leaves one with a lot of hopes, thank you, so much for your leadership. To senator feinstein, youre a joy to work with. So briefly, to both of you, susan, well start you with, first, that has sparked a lot of outrage. Is that fair . Well, whats amazing is that the outrage initially was that were in a covid19 environment, and had them hugging and not social distancing and not wearing a mask, but where the real anger came from, which is just a sign of what basil was talking about, of needing stability again, they were kind to one another. Thats where the outrage is. How could they actually see be hugging and nice to one another. They are supposed to enemies. No, thats not the way were supposed to work. Were supposed to Work Together for a better result. Quickly, basil, your last work . Well, you know, part of me said well maybe that was her way to say goodbye to Lindsey Graham and hello to jaime harris. All right. I would say to susans point, and you talk to members of congress, and on both side was aisle and they will tell you even after the most bitter battles, they can still engage in tender and supportive moments with their colleagues behind the scenes. She is your great great great grandmother and she was born in march of 1840 in virginia. Theres a strong likelihood that rebecca and her husband George Garrison were enslaved. This is them on the 1870 u. S. Census. Previous to this, those who were free were documented, but enslaved people, by and large were not listed by name on the u. S. Census report. Historians believe rebecca was probably trafficked to mississippi, through the slave trade where she eventually settled down after the war. Her husband george likely became a sharecropper, essentially trading physical chains for economic ones. Many sharecroppers were former slaves who worked someone elses land, to make a living. Rebecca had 13 children but by the year 1900 she lost seven of them, along with her husband. I cant imagine losing one child, let alone several. Gosh, thats devastating. Rebecca overcame insurmountable odds. Working as a washing and ironing woman, and eventually purchasing a home. One of her daughters became a schoolteacher and another, a nurse. So what can our history and my familys history, teach us about this cultural moment were in now . Black lives matter. The presence of systemic racism is undeniable. According to misty jones, a Mississippi College history professor. Do you see a connection, a through line, between the welt disparities that existed in these late 19th century and the wealth disparities that exist today . Its crystal clear. It absolutely exists. You cannot come to places like mississippi, and not see it. In those rural mississippi towns where my great great great grandmother lived, more than 40 of county residents remained below the poverty line. Whats fascinating is that Claiborne County today is actually 84s about africanamerican. Very much a product of the civil war. Emancipation brought the promise of freedom but safety was another luxury all together. Free southern blacks were attacked relentlessly. What do you think my ancestor disto escape the stress of the ancestor disto escape the stress of the time that they were living in . One of the ways they coped was to create their own community. They would have had to almost wear two different masks. One mask that they could be themselves around each other. And then another mask that they wore around people who were white. Today, we call that code switching. And it seems like from what youre telling me, code switching was a mode of survival for them. The realities of black american history. My familys history. They are not easy to digest. I want a happy ending. I mean i guess in some ways im the happy ending, you know, im here, and im telling her story.
