Exactly one year away from the 2020 elections, the exancandida are focusing on the early states as new polls are giving us the latest look at where things stand. We say hello, everyone. Some troubling new polling for President Trump on this sunday. Support for impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump is on the rise this new nbc news wall street journal poll shows 49 of americans say they are for impeachment. Thats up, by the way, 6 Percentage Points from a few weeks ago. And, kelly, the president spoke within the last hour on the white house lawn. What are the headlines from that . Reporter well, it was substantive and the president on a sunday afternoon was engaging with us as reporters were gathered to see him come back from new york city. The polling issue, he claims that hes got his own polls and he disputes the public polling that suggest that impeachment support in the country is actually on the rise. And so the president knocked that back in his own way saying that he believes that especially in battleground states he retains a lot of support and especially among republicans. But on other issues, the president was very forceful today and he seems to be shifting his strategy a bit to something we havent heard him talking about as much in recent days and that is his focus on the original whistleblower and a second whistleblower that weve all reported about but who also is not known publicly. So both of those individuals who went to the committee have whistleblower protection, but are not known publicly. The president very frustrated about that saying that especially the first whistleblower whos complaint has been released publicly and it started this impeachment inquiry to be begin with, the president argues that person got a lot of things wropg. Democrats would say, no, although that individual was not a firsthand witness to events, that that person was a road map to finding a number of witnesses who were either listening to the call directly involved in trump Foreign Policy and so on who have been able to lay out a case that the president was trying to extract from ukraine and the ukrainian president an investigation of corruption and the bidens in order to get u. S. Military aid and perhaps a visit to the white house. So the president disputing that and he did it in very forceful terms today saying the whistleblower should be exposed. Heres the president from a short time ago. The whistleblower should be revealed because the whistleblower gave false stories. Some people would call it a fraud. I wont go that far. But when i read it closely, i probably would. They know who it is. You know who it is. You just dont want to report it. And youd be doing the public a service if you did. Reporter another notable moment is the president also spoke about Lieutenant ColonelAlexander Vindman who is an army officer, a veteran of the iraq war, a decorated veteran, currently an employee of the National Security council as the top ukrainian official. We did a lot of coverage on his appearance on capitol hill and he had expressed concerns about there you see Lieutenant Colonel vindman. He had reported to the top lawyer for the National Security council those concerns and hes been one of the witnesses that democrats have been have found to be very credible. The president today saying to me in a question and answer that he has information about vindman that he will bring forward publicly soon. Now, thats the commander in chief making a threat to expose something about an active duty officer in the army. Thats very notable whether there is any information or is not any information. And that of course is could be perceived as some by an teamma attempt to threaten a witness, that could be its own set of challenges for the president. But the president was taking on indirectly Lieutenant Colonel vindman. It does really appear as if the white house has a new strategy that theyre working on right now. Kelly odonnell on what is a Beautiful Day there at the white house. Thank you. New polling shows that the race for the democratic nomination is far from set in stone. The former Vice President , joe biden and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders still leading with double digits according to the latest poll. Sanders gaining the most since our last poll while biden and warren took a slight dip. This is a National Poll. How are voters feeling in iowa . The first caucus state. Vaughn hillyard has been there all weekend long, hes been there pretty much all year long and he joins me right now from davenport, iowa. Youve been on the campaign trail all weekend in iowa and you see the latest polling being is it being reflected out there in the field . Reporter were right here in davenport, iowa, with Elizabeth Warren whos making her own swing here through the hawk eye state. And were going to be looking at the difference between the national and iowa polls and largely throughout the year, the two have reflected one another, but at one point does that iowa poll begin to differ from a National Poll and what impact does that have. The poll that came out this morning showed joe biden Still Holding on to his support. But we appreciate note, Bernie Sanders, where he appears in that poll, gaining five points in the last two months, thats a month after his heart attack. I think the other name im going to mention is Amy Klobuchar in our poll now at 5 , knows a lot of folks here in iowa who say, maybe, if she was performing better nationally, maybe they would take a more seriously look at her for the iowa caucus. This is her best performance at 5 . To what extent is that national legitimacy begin to play out here in iowa and give folks on the ground more of a belief that potentially an Amy Klobuchar campaign could have some potency come the next three months from now. Vaughn, hopefully you can hear me above the applause at that Elizabeth Warren campaign rally. What sort of points is she hitting on right there and highlighting . Reporter you know, its a very similar tone. It was cedar rapids was the first time i saw Elizabeth Warren, it was her First Campaign stop back here earlier this year and shes driven home the message that shes not changing her message and to be clear, she hasnt changed her message since she first entered this race. She was talking about medicare for all and shes going to continue to hit on that. When youre talking to voters thats really a holdup for a lot of individuals but still questioning about while that message is going to play not only here in this democratic primary process, but a year from today on november 3rd, 2020. I want to let you listen to a gentleman from bettendorf, iowa, who i met at this rally. This is what richard just told us. Warren has got big ideas and i like that, but im looking to see how shes going to pay for this. Reporter what i think is interesting about richard, though, is the fact if i pressed him a little bit more, what does he see himself doing three months from now, he says he looks forward to continue to hear warren describe how shes going to pay for medicare for all. She released her plan last week beginning to lay out some of those steps and how she sees that playing out. He mentioned the name Pete Buttigieg, but when i pressed him, would you vote for him on caucus day, he says he doesnt see himself doing that and after a few more minutes of back and forth, we got to the fact that he would likely go and caucus for Elizabeth Warren because he believes she would be to beat donald trump on november 3rd. Frankly, these folks are trying to reckon with how theyll caucus and what impact that would have in determining not only the nominee, but the best nominee to take on donald trump. They still have a lot of times. Vaughn hillyard 92. Not that hes counting. 92 days until i can go home to d. C. Vaughn hillyard in davenport, iowa. Over to minneapolis where the temperatures is in the 40s but sanders supporters are feeling the burn because the senator is set to speak at a rally thats being held at the university of minnesota. Its expected in just about a couple of hours. Im told that the group that is responsible for diamonds and pearls, the song, are going to be there as well. Give me a sense of the atmosphere. Reporter well, the atmosphere is growing and the anticipation is growing. This campaign has highlighted this rally for a week now. They want people here and showing up. This rally, were in front of Williams Arena right now. Its on the campus of the university of minnesota. This building holds about 15,000 people and its a pattern in what weve been seeing from senator sanders. Bigger rallies, bigger endorsements and some celebrities. You mentioned the new Power Generation. Another example of the excitement are the people behind me. She was here in line since 8 00 a. M. This morning to see senator sanders. Tell me, why were you here so early to see the senator . I have so much love for bernie. I think he represents the working class. Hes been fighting for us for a very long time, fighting for health care, fighting for immigrant rights and i just feel like he really i feel a connection to him. He knows what it means to live paycheck to paycheck, to not be able to go to the hospital when you need to. And you supported him in 2016, but you didnt get to vote for him. I wasnt old enough. When you look at the candidates here, were there any other candidates that you were looking at and considering before . No. Why not . Something just about bernie really had a connection with yeah. There are people out here all the time at other events, they say theyre concerned about his age. He came back from the heart attack, are you not concerned . Im not concerned. Hes got this and hes going to win. One year from today hes going to be the president. Bernie 2020, baby the rally starts in about five hours. This is an example of the energy and excitement that the campaign is trying to show now that senator sanders is back on the trail. And theyve had to change to a bigger venue to accommodate the big crowds for that rally there in minnesota. Thanks to you, and im glad that you knew the new Power Generation and what they say. I was ready. Thank you. Now to New Hampshire and were just 100 days from the first in the nation president ial primary. At this point, its a battleground state for the two neighboring senators, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren with former Vice President joe biden trailing behind in third. Nbc campaign julia is in manchester. A critical deadline is coming up. Reporter yes, the ground game here in New Hampshire is really ramping up. Especially as the candidates come here to file for the primary. This weekend, the Sanders Campaign announced that it has the largest field presence here in the state, 90 staffers, 13 field officers and all this comes as a new state director has taken over and youre seeing a lot of the Community Outreach and energy that led to sanders huge 2016 victory. He said hes not taking anything for granted here and he cant afford to with senator Elizabeth Warren staying strong. She has visited the state more than most of the other top leading candidates and she started organizing here really early on. Now in the fall, the top four polling candidates have at least 50 staffers, warren, sanders, buttigieg, biden. An important thing to note about New Hampshire voters is that independence can vote in the primary. More than 40 of the electorate here is undeclared. And hearing from voters, they really just want these candidates to show up. Thats why you see candidates like klobuchar, yang, gabbard hitting 5 in the polls. It will be interesting to see what the reception is here. And Elizabeth Warren is fighting for that state. She launched her campaign in a border town in massachusetts, but right next to New Hampshire. Kamala harris has been doing the opposite of what Bernie Sanders has been doing where hes ramping up. She has closed three of her four Campaign Offices there in New Hampshire and even canceled a planned trip to that state. Have you been speaking with many of the voters there and gotten any sort of of a reaction to this shift in her strategy . Reporter yes. A lot of the voters that weve talked to here have expressed interest in harris. They just wanted her to show up and to be here which she hasnt been since the state convention two months ago. The senator continues to say that New Hampshire is important to her campaign but shes operating kind of a skeleton campaign with half of her staff slashed here. And we as you mentioned, she canceled her filing trip and my colleague Amanda Goldman reported that the Campaign Said shell likely mail in her registration. I should mention, many previous nominees who ended up being nominees have shifted their New Hampshire strategy including john kerry and john mccain in previous years. Thank you. Congress is on a break this week, but lawmakers involved in the impeachment inquiry are moving full steam ahead. Some big names are on the docket this weekend, including john bolton and the Outgoing Energy secretary. How likely is it that theyll show up. Congress is on a break this week, but members of the investigating committees in the impeachment inquiry into President Trump will still be hard at work tackling a deposition schedule of nearly a dozen witnesses. Nbc news Jonathan Allen joins me live right now to talk about some of the big names on the list. And there are two names that stand out right now, of course you have the former National Security adviser, john bolton, and Outgoing Energy secretary, rick perry who seem to be the headliners of this dizzying group right there. We know perry has said thanks but no thanks, but what about bolton . Its like babe ruth and lou gehrig probably arent going to show up. Bolton, the former National Security adviser, his lawyers have said they are going to want a court ruling to see whether or not hes going to end up testifying before this committee. Its unlikely this is going to happen this week. So perry, bolton, some of the others, the omb acting director if you will, is probably not going to testify this week. It will be more of a Skeleton Crew that ends up before the House Judiciary Committee and basically this isnt surprising because the closer you are to the president , the bigger the name you are. The assertion of executive privilege, that shield around it, is probably more viable, at least until courts have made a determination. Dont have take my word for it. You can listen to what the president has to say. Kelly odonnell talked to him earlier today. I think we have a clip. Republicans and the Senate Republicans have been incredible. I dont think theres ever been unity like we have right now. We had 195 or so votes. We didnt have one negative vote. The only ones who had negative votes on the impeachment scam were the democrats. I think nancy pelosi has lost her mind and i think frankly that she should go back home to San Francisco. [ inaudible question ] its really up to the lawyers. I like john bolton. But thats going to be up to the lawyers. Its up to the lawyers, john bolton is no longer a member of the administration, so why wouldnt he respond to this subpoena and speak . Well, it certainly its certainly true that there are parts here where the communications that john bolton has had with the president could fall under executive privilege. John bolton could write a book if he wanted to. Its that Congress Might not have the right to compel his testimony or to subpoena his testimony without some sort of legal ruling and the president himself, you know, could if he wanted to, allow john bolton to talk about whatever theyve spoken about. Its not up to the lawyers as much as its up to the president. But he is deflecting at this point. He doesnt want it to seem like hes making the decision not to allow bolton to talk. After listening to that speech the president made on the north lawn there, it seems as if and throughout the weekend that were at a turning point and the president seems to be foreshadowing some more character assassination for witnesses who do testify. Is that the case . There will be character assassinations. Its like a call of duty version of character assassination with this president , whoever he doesnt like, at whatever moment because they havent been sufficiently loyal to him, he will go after them and so any of these witnesses who say anything that he doesnt like, theyre in for their name being dragged through the mud, not only by the president , but through his allies in the media and through his allies on capitol hill. If its call of duty, who is he, captain price . Pick the character, but it will be the creed of the asa witnesses are scheduled for this coming week. Take a look at it again. With more than 100 hours of testimony from 13 witnesses, already, how much more do investigators need. Joining me now to answer that, former u. S. Attorney and contributor. A lawyer for the whistleblower earlier today at the center of the impeachment investigation says that their client might be willing to respond to written questions from republican lawmakers if republican lawmakers took the whistleblower up on that offer, though, how might that impact this inquiry . I dont think much at all. The whistleblower is sort of a tip ster here. Not a firsthand witness. The real witnesses are the people who listen to the call, who are part of these conversations, who talk to Rudy Giuliani, and so the idea that the whistleblower needs to be identified, needs to testify is talking about hearsay is all really, i think, just a big distraction. I think the focus ought to be on what we refer to in the law as those who observe things firsthand. And those have been the witnesses that the congressional investigators have been focusing on to date. Weve heard a lot of information, some of it has leaked out. From what we do know, right now, what more do investigators actually need . Well, i think what makes this inquiry a little bit different from some of the ones that weve had in the past is the fact that theres been no special county investigation. These investigators are taking the first crack at what happened here and theyve learned a lot already about the conversations that President Trump had with the president of ukraine. The piece thats missing i think and that we might learn about this week, is the with holding of the military aid. Why was it withheld for months . We have some indication from witnesses who were talking to Rudy Giuliani that it was held as leverage to induce the president of ukraine to give trump what he wanted in terms of these investigations burks these people working at omb and the state department, some of the ones were going to hear from this week, might be able to reveal to us the reasons for with holding the military aid. The mere request to ukraine to interfere with the election alone, i think, is an abuse of power that could be an Impeachable Offense. But this could provide an additional Impeachable Offense of bribery if there was this socalled quid pro quo to give President Trump a personal and political benefit. And many of the legal experts are saying at least three articles of impeachment being drawn up. Barbara, thanks to you. The Ranking Member of the house rules committee, tom coal, trying out some new lines in defense on the president on m t meet the press today. The aid is there and the investigations isnt happen. If there was a quid pro quo, it wasnt a very effective one. Republican lawmakers are trying to duck and dodge tough questions as damaging revelations about trump continue to emerge. And on wednesday, november 20th, msnbc and the Washington Post will be hosting the next democratic debate. You see the mod rerators right there. The whistleblower was not on the phone call. It seems like a fair bit of hearsay. Had no firsthand knowledge. There is no quid pro quo. There was no quid pro quo. No quid pro quo. We do that all the time with Foreign Policy. The president has had questions about foreign aid across the board, whether its in Central America or afghanistan or other places. Not remotely an Impeachable Offense. I dont see that rising to the level of an Impeachable Offense. It really has been an evolving message from republicans but with new polling showing support for impeachment on the rise, can trump get his party back in lock step. According to a new report from the daily beast, the Republican Party lawmakers are planning to focus their attention on discrediting the whistleblower, could that be effective . Especially considering so much testimony appears to have backed up what the whistleblower alleged. Yeah, and for that reason, im not sure thats whats going to be the main focus of the strategy. To the extent theres going to be a focus on the whistleblower, thats because thats what the president wants to be focusing on. I dont know that House Republicans believe theres a lot to gain from that. They will try to make adam schiff the focus and discredit him and adam schiff, of course, theres some connection between his staff having a conversation with the whistleblower and i think that may be a line that theyll take. But what im really hearing that republicans are thinking about doing is trying to shift a little bit away from these process arguments. I think they believe that the process arguments have been effective, theyve done a good job of convincing Republican Voters that the process has not been fair. But they realize as this moves to a more public hearing that theyre going to run out of steam on process. What theyre doing is what i believe i heard this morning talking about how there was no quid pro quo and making the argument that because the money flowed or because there was actually no investigation into joe biden, that theres nothing to see here. And i think thats where youre going to start seeing members go as this moves into the more public phase. Youve been taking with many of your colleagues, republican colleagues and friends and theyre shifting away from the process argument. Do they realize theyre also losing support or are they nervous about all of this . Well, i dont know that theyre going to abandon the process arguments. Theyre going to hold on to them as long as they can. But they realize theyre going to need to have a second phase of this. Theres a real sense of inevitability in the house that they have the votes for impeachment and republicans are not going to be able to stop them on that. Are they worried. They accepted this is going to happen and so they have altered their strategy or targeted their strategy on two things, one, convincing republicans that the fix was in, that the process was rigged so that base Republican Voters are making noise about it and so that no republicans in the senate were ultimately where it would be decided whether or not he gets removed are put in play. And then the second thing is to make it as painful as possible for moderate democrats, those who really werent comfortable going down that route. Thats the dual strategy and neither of them are about stopping impeachment in the house. They feel like democrats have the votes, so theyre not trying to convince the broader public that this is not worth doing. Appreciate it. Were getting some new information about the russia probe and the ukrainian Conspiracy Theory that is at the center of the impeachment inquiry. And it is all thanks to some newly released documents from Robert Muellers investigation. The documents were released by the Justice Department. They give a revealing look into trumps 2016 campaign and his former Campaign ManagerPaul Manafort. Here with me now to break it all down is New York TimesJustice Department reporter, and what do these documents tell us about the history between President Trump and ukraine . I think that one of the most striking things to come out of this huge, huge dump of documents that buzzfeed obtained is that the idea that ukraine is the country that interfered in the 2016 election rather than russia goes all the way back to the campaign itself. You saw the two people in trumps orbit who were most closely aligned with russia, Paul Manafort and flynn, saying, you know, we really think this was ukraine and this was sort of a plot on behalf of ukrainians. President trump has clearly decided to embrace that messaging. He seems to truly believe it and hes still obsessed with it today as we can see from the phone call that he had this summer with ukrainian president zelensky. Did we learn anymore about the origins of this server Conspiracy Theory thats been out there that the administration has put out there as well . Yeah, i think that we learned sort of the detail of it which is they believe that ukraine was interfering in the election in a way that might benefit the democrats and i think that that is something that to your point, conspiracy they aorists have be gnawing on. But whats striking, what was a Conspiracy Theory is front and center, its become part of the Republican Party, its become part of what the president truly believes and is even part of what the Justice Department is investigating in its own separate inquiry into its investigation into the investigators as the Justice Department decides whether or not the decision to investigate the Trump Campaign and President Trump himself was unlawfully predicated as the attorney general has said. So this what was a Conspiracy Theory is now at the heart of many mainstream conversations Going Forward that are going to impact the upcoming election. There are some 500 pages in this document dump. Paul manaforts name appears to play a key role here. Yes. Paul manafort is all over these documents and whats so interesting too is not only is Paul Manafort all over these documents. Manafort wants to interact with the campaign, but the campaign itself, in particular, steve bannon, members of the Trumps Campaign in the president s orbit who feel very weary of Paul Manafort. They dont want to be aligned with manafort himself. They dont want to be seen as still working with manafort even though hes continuing to advise and offer help to the campaign after he leaves. And theres an understanding early on that russia and ties to russia could be a problem for then candidate and now President TrumpGoing Forward. Yeah, just a week before the election, emails were exchanged that they wanted to get away from manafort. Bumpadum, bumbumbumbum for the First Time Since the recent outbreak of fires that have destroyed hundreds of thousands of acres, dozens of homes and caused several deaths, President Trump is tweeting about it by attacking californias governor and threatening to with hold federal aid money. Now in three tweets this morning, the president called on the state to clean forest floors and conduct control burns. He praised the firefighters but offered no condolences to californians. Homeowners are starting to return home. Firefighters still there on the front lines you can see. Joining me now from sacramento is mike muller, hes a Deputy Director of cal fire. Good to see you again. Give us a sense of that i know there are several fires that are burning out of control at this hour. The winds have died down and the biggest one, the kincade fire, the status on all of those . Really, weve turned the corner on all of the fires across the state. Still cautiously optimistic. As you know the conditions in california can change in a moments notice. The kincade, 76 containment line around that fire. Every fire across the state is over 50 . Firefighters are still engaged, our focus is working with the fire survivors and get them back to their properties. Thats a contrast to what it was a week ago when they were saying that the worst is yet to come. The Power Utility Companies there in california have been doing those blackouts leaving millions of people in the dark. Has that helped at all in preventing fires. I cant say exactly, but prevention is one of the battles to battling any fire, 97 of them human cause, but, you know, it puts another layer on our operations when we have to evacuate residents with the power shutdown. Were working with the Governors Administration in looking at that very closely. In the meantime, the president was tweeting about this, talking about cleaning forest floors and cutting fire stoppers. Even with holding aid. You guys are there on the front lines. Your reaction to that . You and i have been on the fire line together here in california. I think for your viewers, its very important to understand, the federal government is the largest landowner in california. I can tell you, Governor Newsom, his administration have absolutely leaned forward on a daily basis, thousands of firefighters are extinguishing fires. In the 2020 federal budget, theyre looking to cut 40 million. Half of californias investment is spent on federal land. So we are really leaning forward, were the leader in forest management. Its interesting when Governor Newsom tweeted back, he said says you dont believe in climate change, youre excused from this conversation. Picking up on that, six of the ten most destructive fires in california history all took place in the last two years, including the deadliest of course, the campfire, the anniversary coming up on friday. Whats happening out there . Well, again, in california, as you well know, were in a mediterranean climate. We have gone through six years of extreme drought. We have not recovered from that. That dead landscape is still scattered across the state. Were seeing these extreme duration of wind events. Ive seen whats been happening for 20 years. And when we say explosive fire growth, it is. Climate change has played a major role. The governor has identified that. Hes made investments in resources and response, including additional firefighters that are part of the prevention message that the governor has really leaned forward on and throughout the state, 35 projects that have really impacted over 200 communities and if its what we saw in this last fire fight is a testament to the improvement. Our thanks to you. We met when there was a fire season, now its all year round. Thank you. Well be right back. 25 cent boneless wings at applebees. Get em while theyre hot. If you are a democrat not in the top four, how worried should you be . You should be worried only to money. Clearly, it would help for you to stay on the mind of somee1 voters is to get into the debates. If you cant get into the debates tqvu becomes a far more serious i]problem. If you have enough money and if youre are you hearing anything from ynu circles of anyniu you have to eu four percent in the polling and raisefa additiol money from additional numbers of donors. As the threshled increases over time, it is going to becomet oke difficult for individual candidates to make it. But i would also say that we talk afa lot about the top thre top four candidates. Kpq also suggests that there is room for an alternative, whether you wantok to be the moderate alternative to joe biden or some kind of progressive alternative to a sort of Elizabeth Warren or Bernie Sanders. Of t course,e1 thats a nati race. You takew3 a look and you seexd mayor buttigieg iw polling very high ouw polling in the topi] tier, as well, in iowa,e1 but lagging in South Carolina which is the first in the south primary which is taking place in february. A lot of people arew3 saying th leaves one of two people in the race. Emo some others are saying you cant be when polling zero pq latinos. I mean, i think we need to see a stronger strategy from him and his campaign if he wants to remain a top coucnder. Cant winfa a democratice1 primary without strong support. You cant win a general election without strong africaname 9 ande1 latino support. Showing what the strategy is. I think if they did, that would take them a lot farther. You asked who is havi. a money trouble. Harris refocussed his campaign. Castro said he was at the end. They really need the resources there to be able to run the kind of campaigns thatt they want a slemern can i make ae1 if i e a quick comment about that. Youre absolutely right. White supremacists caught on camera trying8 t film a propaganda video at a memorial to a civil rights tragedy. E1 President Trump is on the attack thisco sunday against th impeachment inquiry while speaking with reporters on the white house lawn. In the administration and so the president arguing that whistleblower one whos crentity we dont know and wet have not broadcast would have worked with People Associated with president obama, would have been on that National Security council team. o and using that to try to say that there is an antitrump agenda among the whistleblower. Thats part of the argument the the president s acting today as if thats not a decision he would be personally involved in, but saying he likes john bolten and always gote1 along wellt w him. On the issue of polls, the president was asked by reporters about the number of polls that show that the sentiment in the country has moved toward impeachment and including removal from office which is the second step of the process that would happen if there were a senate trialnr and if a sufficit numbernr of senators voted to remove him. Here is how the president described it to usnr earlier today. Youre reading the wrong polls. The facnn polls are fake. The facnn polls are fake. ¤4 lousy. you look at the polls out this morning, people dont want anything to do with impeachment. Its a phony scam. Its a hoax. Reporter weve seen this tactic from the president fa for years now where he will repeat what he believes is his best majue1 counterw3 argument. We know the pollsjf are always snapshot of times. They are one measure of the sentiment. And the president may have acsays to polls from his own campaign that tell him something different. What hes also stressing is that republicans have been unified. There were no republicans who voted in favor of the impeachment inquiry. The president would note1 answe when i asked him if he would mount anxd offense which is onef rm he certainly was in a fighting mood. Were speeding down the road to the 2020 general election. Today were one year out and new polling reveals how fluent this race is for the democraticjf president ial hopefuls. Joe biden and Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders leading with double digitsjf according to oure1 latest nbc a wall street journal poll. Sanders gaining the most since our last poll while biden andco warren take a slight dip and Pete Buttigieg experiencing a slight drop nationally. We are joined now from iowa where he just spoke with senator Elizabeth Warren. I know you spent some time, as well, with mayor buttigieg this weekend. Reporter good e1afternoon. This is the wrapping up of Elizabeth Warrensq selfie line here in davenport, iowa. This is her first stop of the day. Shell be heading out this fa eveni evening. She has faced questions over how she would pay for her medicare for all plan. She has come over thenrpmicrosce on toq a steady second place. Thats where ÷] suddenlys e microscope really honednr in on Elizabeth Warren and exactly how she would get through medicare for all and also pay for it. I want to play for you her tut justni had a response to a her how not only she would pass immigration e1reform, but also y for medicare for all when of course you would theoretically need 60 votes in the s she told us. 2020 is our chance toz save 11 trillion. Thats like the biggest tax break in American History and its going to go right in the pockets of reporter she said in response to the question how she would pay for it or how she would pass it in the senate, she said thats why we need to be the filibuster essentially needing a supermajosway in the senate, getting 51 votes to pass immigration e e1reform. 51 votes to passco medicare for all. Filibuster reform is axd controversial thing within the here in iowa, he is in a statistical tie with the likesx of Bernie Sanders, joe biden and Elizabeth Warren hereni in iowa thats what weve seen over the last couple of days is ae1 stro ground presence not only among paid organizers with the amount of cash theq campaign has allowd i alsook asked him point blankl yesterday, he was wanted by the Barack Obamas candidacy. He said he knocked on doors himself. Qe because no two campaigns are alike. He likes to see some similarity between not only a younger gentleman but also at ground swell of jfactivist support. Fa if he is able to walk away here in iowa, that gives a legitimacy to contend in New Hampshire, South Carolina and nevada. He is going to be happy. E1 ¤49 lets head to minneapolis where senator Bernie Sanders is set to appear along side representative omar. They are set to speak at ae1 ray being held at the university ofa minnesota. I know you have been following the campaign for a little e1whi. There is some brand newxd polli that shows that atmosphere like there . Reporter a lot of new thing1 coming out today. The campaign is feeling good about not only the polls, but aboutq what theyre going to have. One of the members of the squad who we have been seeing senator Sanders Campaign wit n this is the third weekend in a row he has b9h highlighting that endorsement. Then we have the polls that came out that showed senator sanders at 19 . I want to talk to someone who is familiar about the polls and familiar about the situation. Our polls showing an increase of fivexd points how are you guys feeling . Bernie has a solid base of support. We are building our movement on issues like medicarexd for all. The American People are going to come out and vote for it. One of the polls showed that senator san¥ey 45 ofnr americans were not comfortable abouuhis health or concerned those people feel better . Show, dont tell. w you were with him this week in iowa doing a number of events. We will be back out next week. The American People didntt ha a chance to see Bernie Sanders out on the campaign trail. When they do, theyll recognize he is ready to be president of the united states. Do you acknowledge thatw3 thats a hurdle . Is that something that has to b1 overcome . Overcome is the wrong word. Its right that people ask questions about that. Its right for our campaign to show people. Lets talk about something thats been getting a lot of the real question to the American People, other candidates who want tofa contin a lot of people were taking notes that sanders was the only candidate thatcoe1ok actually t of people are talking about the optics so far. How has he seemed on the s h l campaign trail . Energized . Reporter hes been very enjuresedco onnr thee1 campaign. Senator sanders has been keeping regular pace since hes come back. Well seeing smaller events. Right now, we are in minneapolis. He has been several events todav in iowa where we were talking with von hilliard. The campaign is making a point to say senator sanders is o[bac theypod trying to show through the celebrity appearances. They will be performing for him and trying to show that this campaign is back and that there is Energy Behind him. There are people lined up already for senator sanders. Thats the message from the campaign. Doors will open fo4a another two hours. Glen, we know the bigger the name, the less likely that theyll actually show up for the testimony. Does the white house blocking testimony actually6z strengthen the case for okimpeachment . The white house blocking testimony being for impeachment and removal and 49 being againsv removal. In just one month, those numbers have virtually flipped. Now q49 of those polled are in favor of impeachmenz and removl and ÷de146 are against. Heres what i think is most telling about thet numbers. Thosei] numbers flipped without single minute of public testimony. I think people have one heck of a show coming when the house begins to call witnesses publically. We havent yet seen theco lieutenant and ambassador, the feowna hills and the billfa taylors testify about the quid pro quo they saw. I dook think once the public hearings open up, youre going to see those5a numbers int favf impeachment and removal sky rocket. And all of that said, a small but increasing number of republicans are nowjf starting support impeachment and e1remoi what do you think, by the e1way the articles of impeachment will look like . And what could be the timeline on all of that . Thats a great question. One school of thought says keep it very narrow because the dirty ukraine deal is very compelling. You know whats alsoco compelli is the obstruction of the congressional inquiry that you just alluded to. Ini also think the priori] obstruction of justice reported out in volume two of the mueller report, thats also pretty it was about corruption. Neverq innr our history have we impeachment movement. Thisfae1 is unheard of. Joining me now, the former spokesperson for the House Oversight committee. He is also a contributor for nb republicans appear to be working a counter punch to the testimony so far by currentlyw3 focussing now on the whistleblower. Can that help their case . I dont think so becausexdok d moved so far beyond the d whistleblower. Wee1 have people who under oathn these depositions said they witnessed the quid pro quo. The whistleblower at this point really is almost irrelevant to the evidence that hy been mounting that the democrats hava obtained during the depositions and republicans can try to play complaining about what they called a sham process. The reality is the investigation thats proceeding, the way that its unfolding, theyre being used with the rules that republicans themselves authored and putu the reality is it was created by republicans to investigatee1 democ n president s. The republicans haveda pushe for this process to goe1fa publ which it will. How doxd you figure that might actually benefit the president . I dont think that it will. I think they keep moving the goal posts every time they run intoni anni obstacle whether tag about the processe1 or the whistleblower. Soon it willzbo during the hearings you will see ant cj similar to what weve seen during the mueller hearing. They keep moving the goalco pos because they know they have no argument. They know that nobody is out there saying a quid pro quo didnt necessarily happen. Theyre not saying what the president did was a perfect call. Theyre using very different language. I think that they know. This is just that when it gets to the public hearings, you have ambassador taylor sitting there under oath and recounting what henr saw what happened, who hav been career service. Theyre not partisan, sitting under oath with their hand 1nder oath with their hand quo, that will be devastating to this president. Which is why a lot of people say the Republican Party is trying to do irkt caassassination to witnesses. Thank e1you. At the heart of all ofe1e1 , a quid pro quo between President Trump and ukraine looms at the center of the impeachment inquiry. An opinion writer wonders if the july phonexd call was the first time the parties worked together . M,s c1 he writes in ukraine, the quid pro quo may have started longco before the phone call. Here withe1 me is the chief investigative corresqoondent fo yl news. So glad to have you with me today. Lay out first the history betweenq trumpe q campaign and ukraine as far back as it goes. Look, paule1 manafort had be the consultant to the pro russia politsip party in ukraine when he joined the Trump Campaign. The mwase1 some of the new details were getting from some of the emails that have been released as part of thelp muell investigation and fbi interview suggests that Paul Manafort was suggesting that ukraine coulkd have been behind the hack of the dnc way back in 2016 and early 2017. So that was a very good way of d deflecting from the conclusion that the russians did it. You have toww s look at the ent ukraine story as an exercise in deflection. This is what the president wanted people to pursue. This was his way of suggestinge that it wasnt the russiy it was some other forces in the ukraine. Do you get a sense that there was a quid pro quo between President Trump and ukraine to get them toe1 not cooperate wit muellers investigation . There is some circumstantial evidence. There had been somee1 reports bk in 2017 when the Trump Administration did approve military aid for the ukrainians to fight russian aggression. We dont have e1definitive evidence of that atok this poin its justw3 a question and certainly did not obstructt thc Mueller Investigation in their inquiries into manafort. They were able to bring two criminal cases against him and convicted him. Chief investigative correspondent, thank you. Thank you. 4n1 why is the president now officially a florida man . E1 welcome to both of you. You talk about bidennr and warr and sanders, theyreco leading e pack at leaste1 according to polls. Sande] c m gained the most since our lastni poll while bid has slipped. Should he be concerned . I think in the totality of the polls out in the last couple of weeks actually the vice hes in third place, but is really in contention for the tou i think the polls out today had good news for a lot of e1people mayor buttigieg is rising. The Vice President has taken a lot of beating over theni last month particularly from donald trump. Donald trump has attacked him over andlp. I and over again. And still thenr Vice President at the top of the tier. nr senator warren andxdi] sanders inq close. Lets talk about the hypothetical right now and the matchups. I know this is all about the electoral college. Both biden andt warren are beating trump by nearly 10 points. How do you think the president pays attention to this sort of stuff . You can tell by who hes poking fun at and who he has names for. I think he recognizes the candidates that hes most likely going to e1face. I agree with much of what was justi] said. One of the constants in all the polls is that if you think of Elizabeth Warren and bernie there is some crossover particularly withe1 white lower income men and some of the critical states the democrats need where they dont move from sanders toe1 warren. There is some gender issues there, as well. Lp i think the fact that we have these three candidates kind of dividing up the electorate guarantees a very tight race. And i think that the Vice President coco may well not be t winner of iowa. So that has to be factored in. The electorate ine1xd iowa is l 97 e1right. It reallye1 doesnt represent t core constituency of the democratic party. Itso1gn a very young electo in iowa. The Vice President is pollingt fairly lowxd among young people nalshly. Our poll found that 53 of americansn hp e disapproving of take a look at the number right there. From last month and the past year. And several years. Would that really matter, though . Disapproval for quite sometime even when he was on the campaign trail. I think this is the central issue for donald trump which is that he is extremely polarizing. He has a Strong Majority against him, cyfaactually. His strong disapproval is much greater than his strong approval. Task of basically Nuclear Bombing whoever the democratic nominee is. You see hes engaging in theok primary byw3 attacking already. I think one of the reasons he is fearful of joe biden against him. I think this isv t big question for the democratic electorate which is which of the candidates mq9bane1 assault from p jadtrump . Because whoever it is will take that heat. So i think who can weather it, who can weather it, i think its a lot of people willxd probably make up their mind as tr1q walking into the voting booth or going to process. That will scaret allw3 of uo eleanor, the president s approvalehqating with the econoy is 52 . Its pretty strong. Will that be enough to catapult him . If you look at past history, a Strong Economy reelects. I think democrats havexd to be fearful that despite all of the disapproval of the president s a anticse1 and the potential impeachment that voters still say how is thise1 affecting me . democrats make the case that some of his behavior does affecd them. It affects National Security and it does affectt theirnr safety i would just add into that very briefly that i think one of the challenges for trump is that voters arent voting on the economy. Theyre making judgments of him. His Approval Rating on y,n job is much lower thannie1 economic aru Approval Rating. Its good for them to talk about how his policies affect them and how the democrats policiese1 and they had fa and some good strong econoc policies coming from the ni democrats would be helpful.
