We have Kendis Gibson back after not being here yesterday. Yeah. Is that because you were celebrating your birthday on friday in. I was celebrating my birthday a little too hard i guess. Im glad you did. Enjoy the rest of your weekend. Hi, im Kendis Gibson here hive. Scrapped, the president claims he called it off because of an ongoing violence in afghanistan. Many are wondering, though, why plan a summit with the taliban at camp david in the first place . Plus a struggle to survive. Exactly one week after Hurricane Dorian destroyed parts of the bahamas, the sadnews headline. As many as 6,000 people are unaccounted for. An update from abaco live. Summer of scandals. The air force defending its officers decision to stay at a trump resort in scotland. Now the president s opponents in the house want to know exactly why. But we begin right here on this sunday with questions. Serious questions like what were they thinking . The white house made the startling announcement overnight that they invited the taliban to the president ial retreat at camp david. Just three days before the names of the thousands of americans killed right down there at ground zero will be read aloud at that location. The president revealing that he canceled the secret meeting with the taliban leaders that were supposed to happen today at camp david. He also pulled the plug on talks with the president of afghanistan. Trump says that he called off these separate meetings in response to the taliban claiming responsibility for thursdays bombing in kabul. That attack, by the way, killed 12 people including an american soldier. Secretary of state mike pompeo defending the president s decision in what we can only call a sunday media blitz. Heres what he told our own chuck todd. If youre the taliban, conditions have been worsening and theyre about to get worse. What is okay, you say about to get worse, so youre going to does this mean were going to increase the military activity against the taliban . Were going to make sure that everyone in the region understands that america will always protect its National Security interest. Ill leave it to the department of defense to talk about specifics, but no one should underestimate President Trumps commitment to achieving those goals. Secretary of state mike pompeo says that he learned of the cancelations during last nights dignified transfer at Dover Air Force base in delaware for the fallen american soldies. See him there on the right. There are 14,000afghanistan. Lets head to nbcs hans nichols at the white house. Usually a slow news day at the white house, but, hans, it is a busy one now. A lot of people are wondering, what were they thinking . This group which has harbored al qaeda, invited to camp david just a few days before 9 11. Reporter well, kendis, Administration Officials will tell you that they made those considerations, they understand that there would be pros and cons on both sides. The challenge with these peace talks was always going to get to the final agreement. And it was crucially going to figure out how you bring in the Afghan Government. So theres this idea to host everyone at camp david, to finally get them across the line. Now, the questions we have this morning and this afternoon are, how close were they to a final deal . Because it doesnt appear as though they were. We do know its the longstated goal of the Trump Administration to withdraw troops from afghanistan. The president talked about it just the other day. Getting down to about 8,600 before the election. Right now, there are about 14,000 u. S. Troops there. Everyone in the region acknowledges that you need a political settlement, some sort of negotiated peace between the taliban and Afghan Government. Now, what isnt clear is what happens now. Are these negotiations totally off track, will talks basically cease, will there be an uptick in the fighting toempo, more fighting on both sides or effort to bring the talks back onto track . It seems like the Afghan Government is almost cheering this as well, these talks are off. Heres what one of their spok spokespeople has to say, saying the government of afghanistan appreciates the sincere efforts of its allies in peace and is committed to working together with the United States and other allies in the future to bring su sustainable peace. You heard at the top mike pompeo clearly hinting the battle tempo is going to get more intense and theres going to be more fighting and had a bit of a boast in there saying in the last ten days the u. S. Has killed over a thousand taliban soldiers. So both sides leading up to these negotiations, leading up what some thought would be a final deal, had increased their fighting because both want to preserve their gains on the battlefield in some sort of political settlement. Clearly, something changed with the president. And he is saying that its the death of this american that caused him to cancel these secret talks and now here we on sunday wondering where were going to go. Kendis . Yeah, many people are remembering the deaths of the 2,400plus american s on 9 11. Nbcs hans nichols at the white house for us. For more on this, by the way, the former u. S. Ambassador to afghanistan, ryan crocker is his name, hell be joining me later this hour to break down these developments and breakdown in talks, for that matter. Were going to move on for right now. Rescue efforts are under way in the bahamas in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. According to the minister of health, at least 6,000 people remain unaccounted for and with 70,000 people now homeless, access to food and clean water remaining a major concern. While the death toll sits at 43, the bahamas folks there say 40foot trucks will be needed to hold the Staggering Number of bodies expected to be found. Nbcs Kerry Sanders is on the ground in the great abaco key in the bahamas. We were talking about that area right there getting hit with 180 mile an hour sustained winds and now we can see behind you the results of those winds. Reporter well, im here in Marsh Harbour at the port where some of those containers have already arrived and some of the dead bodies have been loaded in so this is going to be a horrific death toll. Weve spent time here traveling in and around the area today, but most importantly right here at the port, some good news, as we take you to some of the images we shot here, a relief ship coming in but that relief ship after getting some of its supplies off becoming a ferry so that nose who have been trapped here for days can get on that ferry and make the voyage to nassau, an island that was not hit, an island that still has normal civilization that people can return to with water, food, and housing. While here, its very hard to find any of that. Those who are getting out are saying how thankful they are and they say that we have had days of chaos and panic, but now its turned into a weary, orderly fatigue. People are living with order. Theres no more screaming and yelling. The Bahamian Defense forces are here. The government is providing the ships on an orderly regularly, although not exactly to the hour, but a schedule of getting them here so people know theyll be leaving. There are some people who arent sure they want to leave but are in the process of at least getting their families out then, of course, there is the tremendous sorrow and loss because some are leaving here and theyre not sure that they are ever going to be able to return here, especially those who are a little bit older. This is what one woman had to tell me. So this is your life right now. This is life right now. Reporter Everything Else basically lost . Everything. I have life. Thats the most important thing. Life. A lot of my friends have died. Reporter and there you hear it, celebrating the, perhaps, most important thing, that she has her life. Unfortunately, in many cases, those who have their life have lost friends and relatives in this hurricane. And as you noted at the top here, its going to take a long time to determine what the death toll is and in many cases they may never be able to do that because there has been such destruction that the places that are decimated may have bodies buried underneath and its just very hard, even with cadaver dogs, to find nothose who may b buried under there and try to dig them out. There is some other good news that while we see the ferries leaving here today, kepd dndis, have come back from the airport where a delta md80 has landed and picking up passengers and flying them, again, in a very orderly way, off to nassau. That plane will probably make two turns today taking those back. Tropic Ocean Airways arranged the delta flight. What theyre doing is they have c planes and theyre flying to the outer lying areas like treasure cay and there, theyre stopping, landing and doing an assessment. Theres been so much confusion as to which areas have already been evacuated. And which areas where there are people still waiting to be evacuated that tropic Ocean Airways which is headed by a former pilot with the u. S. Navy, a top gun pilot, understands the best way to apply intelligence, he said were going to do it on our own, put our planes out there, get the information and take that information and work it with the boats and the planes in the area to get people to where they need to go because there has been, obviously, lack of communication, a lot of confusion out here, kendis . I guess the confusion and chaos is understandable when you have this unprecedented disaster thats taken place there in the bahamas. Nbcs Kerry Sanders for us in great abaco key. Our thanks to you. Back here in this country, and the race to the white house, with new polling today, and abc News Washington post poll shows senator Elizabeth Warren is closing in on joe bi the very warm welcome that she got in New Hampshire convention. Take a look. [ cheering ] with just days to go until the next democratic debate, Eliza Collins, political politics reporter with the wall street journal is joining me. And that is the sort of stuff, eliza, as we watch that video and you hear the sound right there, that is rock star stuff when it comes to anybody whos in politics. Whats behind her rise . Elizabeth warren certainly has been drawing large crowds. I mean, New Hampshire is a state she really needs to win. Shes also been to some other states that are not early states but seattle, she drew massive crowds. She certainly is, people are excited about her. Im not exactly sure, you know, what is behind her rise but we have seen her moving upward. Shes adopt add lot of ted a l s progressive policies of Bernie Sanders who is popular. Looking at that the poll, hes technically ahead of warren though within the margin of error. She also brought in other voters that arent necessarily sanders voters. More educated voters. Shes doing really well with women, well with older voters. Sanders has command over some of those younger voters. But it is important to point out that while shes had an upward trajectory, sanders has remained up, you know, in second place in most polls but kind of stagnant. Joe biden is still leading and still leading in most National Polling at this point. So, you know, were still far out from the first states to boat, but biden is still in the lead while warren is kind of going up toward him. Lets talk about that lead here for a second. Lets talk about the lead and probab pop up more numbers were getting from the Washington Post poll. It shows which democrat has the best chance of beating trump. And you can see there as you mentioned, highlighting what you just said, joe biden up there with 45 . Saying that he has the best chance. Surprising to see Kamala Harris so far down there. Is it that people are not completely keyed in on the race at this point or whats going on . We still are very far out. I mean, i think the average person is not talking about this the way you and i are at this point and biden is a name that people know. Sanders is also a name that people know and warren is becoming a name people know. So there certainly is room for someone like harris, someone like pete buttigieg, you know, cory booker, they could still move up. Weve got lots of time. And ive talked to a lot of analysts who still say that New Hampshire and iowa, which warren is doing very well in New Hampshire right now, are still the most important states. Those are states one and two on the primary calendar. And really, those set the conversation Going Forward as the calendar unfolds. So, you know, these analysts are saying, these candidates still should be focused on that retail politics in those two states, and not worry so much about National Polling right now because whoever comes in first and has, you know, strong showing, second, third, in those states, will probably continue to do well as the map unfolds. Yeah. And you give us a reminder that still 147 days before the iowa caucuses, before the first votes are cast. A lot to get into with this new polling thats out today. Well get into it a little bit later on in this newscast. But our thanks to Eliza Collins for joining us. Thank you. Thanks. Up next, trust issues . Intriguing new reporting today about what was happening behind the scenes as the president tried to cover up for his mistaken claims about alabama and Hurricane Dorian. The Washington Post writes, on september 1st, staff at noaa were warned against contradicting the president s claims about dorian hitting alabama. Whats behind the president s obsession with dorian . For the record, by the way, heres what our meteorologists, our powerhouse nbc affiliate in birmingham, alabama, are telling viewers right now. We were never anticipating any hurricane effects here in central alabama, and, obviously, the track did confirm that that storm did miss us well off to the east. Adrian castellano there. Some suggests its a distraction ahead of what will be a trump scandal heavy focused week on capitol hill as congressional leaders return from six weeks of vacation. Joining me right now is rachel bovard, senior policy director for the conservative policy institute, and democratic strategist basal michael, former executive director of the new York Democratic party. Okay, rachel, let me start with you. How do you interpret this whole memo from noaa to its employees . Well, what the memo basically said was, hey, lets rely on the advice weve been given and lets not issue our personal opinions which i think everyone in america would agree with, we dont want to hear the personal opinions of people that work at noaa, we want to hear the facts. If anyone was paying attention to the hurricane advisories coming out of noanoaa, they sho a 5 to 10 chance that alabama would experience tropicalstormforce winds. At no point hurricaneforce winds. Let me clarify that. And the reason people who are at the National Hurricane center there in birmingham put out to members, they were getting frantic calls from people, residents saying should we be evacuating . This is dangerous stuff. Yeah, thats right, and thats why noaa issued a statement that said, hey, this is the best reporting we have, 5 to 20 tropicalstormforce winds like you said, they never said there was going to be a hurricane. I think its better than everyone kind of batten down the hatches and prepare regardless. I think the bigger issue is why are we still talking about this . The president is trying to end the war in afghanistan, border crossings are down by 30 . We have a Health Care System thats a mess. Yet here we go day whatever on sharpiegate . This is why 69 of americans say their faith in the media is declining because of their obsessive reporting on things like this. Rachel rachel, hes obsessed about it. Hes tweeted quite a bit about it. No, there are Media Companies that make money off the professional president ial an g antagonists and thats what this is. We saw the we heard about the memo that noaa put out here. I want to show you what the National Hurricane center folks told me just last week. After that memo went out. I noted three times today the president said this storm will impact alabama and alabama is in trouble. Did he get that information from you guys or wheres the president getting this . Do you know . You know, i think were really trying to get everybody ready. If you think about this storm, as we try to, you know, have impacts in florida, up to the carolinas, you know, its the peak of the hurricane season. Okay. Weve been really saying, were getting into the peak, lets get everybody along the coast, the gulf, the atlanta ready for the hurricane season. Alabama should be on guard as well . We all should be watching this time of year. Were getting right into that peak. Ken graham, thank you, from the National Hurricane center. Appreciate your time. I tell you, the storm wasnt the only thing that was spinning. He was doing a very good job, the spinning. What do we make . Whats behind all of this . The president s obsession with this . I dont know if theres the what the obsession is with dorian or with alabama. Think the obsession more is just being right and being forceful about what he thinks is right and delivering that to the American People regardless of how wrong or his inability to say, you know what, i made a mistake, that should not have happened. If you think about you talk about worried about whats going to happen on capitol hill this week . No, he doesnt care. Let me not say that. He cares only to the extent that it conflicts with his relationship with his base, not the American People writ large, but specifically his base. To sort of bring the hurricane thing into this part of the conversation, the fact that he would use a map that someone, potentially, him, drew this additional sort of grouped alabama into the path of the hurricane and did so from the oval office tells us a lot. It tells us that regardless of what Scientists Say and this is very important, regardless of what Scientists Say, regardless of how he may inflame concerns and fears with certain parts of the population, its really important that people Pay Attention to what he wants them to Pay Attention to. Thats whats scary, particularly when youre trying to go to an Authority Figure to get facts and information. And were going to have a lot of people on capitol hill this week who are going to be asking for asking a lot of questions. Right. A lot of investigations. So, perhaps, the president is thinking about that. Who knows. Im going to have to leave it there. Appreciate your time. Rachel, thank you, also, for being here. Still ahead, the taliban on u. S. Soil, that was the plan until President Trump put an end to the proposed talks at camp david. So what happens now for americas longest war . As North Carolina recovers from dorian, a political battle also brews in that state. Its dan versus dan in the 9th congressional district. Democrat dan mccready, democrat dan bishop. The 9th district, by the way, as you can see right there, staggers from the suburbs of charlotte east to fayetteville, North Carolina. Its gone without representation in the last 27 months, thanks to an absentee ballot scandal organized by nowindicted Republican Campaign worker that forced Election Results to be thrown out. Joining me right now, nbc news correspondent Leigh Ann Caldwell in the town of matthews, North Carolina, and leigh ann, i do know youve been covering this story from the election, from the very beginning and this is a district that the president carried by some 11, 12 points. Where does this particular race stand now . Reporter kendis, the stakes are extremely high in this race, both National Republicans and democrats are testing the mood of the country about one year out from the 2020 election. Especially in districts like these which lean republican. The democrat, dan mccready, hes running as a moderate democrat. His slogan is country over party. Heres how he put it. I dont believe that anybody should go to washington as a republican first or a democrat first. They should go as americans first. Thats how we fought in the marine corps when i was over in iraq. We never cared about your political party. We all wore the same color uniform. Reporter that is the message that hes taking to suburban voters in areas of the district like this. Voters that he needs to win on tuesday. Now, the republican, dan bishop, on the other hand, hes tieing mccready to National Democrats saying that National Democrats are too far left for suburban voters, and heres what bishop had to say. The vision of those who have funded dan mccready, it is a vision of the Green New Deal and illegal immigration being decriminalized and health care for illegals and all and government domination of health care, but government domination of everything even to the point of socialism which they openly embrace. Its a dramatic difference in vision. Reporter bishop is also tieing himself extremely closely to the president who will be in the district tomorrow, kendis. Many are calling this race a tossup. The president holding the rally there in fayetteville. Leigh ann caldwell, our thanks to you in matthews, North Carolina. Up next, new reaction to our top story. This right there, the president admitting on twitter that he secretly invited taliban leaders and afghanistans president to the u. S. To negotiate an agreement that would end the longest war in u. S. History. Well, this morning the secretary of state mike pompeo also confirmed that the administration recalled the u. S. Ambassador to afghanistan after preside trump pulled his plug on the secret meetings. Joining me is the perfect guest to discuss this, former ambassador, ryan crocker. Ambassador crocker, thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. As i mentioned, youre the perfect person to be here. You are former president obamas ambassador to afghanistan, during 2012, in fact, during the tenure, this is a tweet that the president , now donald trump, sent out on january 13th, 2012. It in he writes, while obama is slashing the military, hes also negotiating with our sworn enemy, the taliban, who facilitated 9 11. I mean, you were the ambassador there during that put out this , what are you learning that he was having secret talks with the taliban . The talks that i was privy to when i was ambassador to afghanistan were at the request of the Afghan Government and in the few conversations i had with members of the taliban, Afghan Government representatives were in the room. Fully authorized, of course, by the administration. So as we look at what were facing now, the huge difference, and the huge mistake i mean, do you think theres a bit of hypocrisy on the part of this administration . Well, thats the point im trying to make here. These talks that weve been witnessing now have taken place without the government of afghanistan present. When i held them, i did so at the request of the government and with the governments there. What the president is doing is delegitimizing the Afghan Government very much as we delegitimize the vietnamese government in the paris peace talks. This is about surrender. This isnt about a peace. And it just makes me sick of heart to see what were prepared to do to give up on our friends, our allies, afghan women and girls, all the things we worked so hard for, the president seems ready to let go of both our interests and our values. Let me get your take on the optics of all of this. So as we mentioned, of course, were just a few days away on the anniversary of 9 11, the taliban, theyve harbored, theyve coddled al qaeda who are responsible for that terrorist attack, of course. So the president is inviting them at one point to camp david, the president ial retreat there in maryland just day s before te anniversary of 9 11, just a month after the taliban put out a statement supporting those attacks. You as a former ambassador, what do you make of the optics in all of this . The optics couldnt be worse. It is, as you say, the anniversary of 9 11 and to be shaking hands and sitting down with the same taliban leaders who hosted al qaeda that led to 9 11 with no commitments from them on permanent ceasefire or anything else, that redefines the nature of surrender. Its a very sad thing to see. Just glad he finally had the sense to pull the plug on it. Yeah. Right now, as you may know the taliban either controls or influences more afghan territory than at any point since its toppling back in 2001. So what next steps would you say this administration should take to try to deal with afghanistan and the taliban . Of course, we have some 14,000 u. S. Troops there right there in the country. Well, the first thing is to make this statement that we are not going to continue with negotiation, to make that final. Just to erase what has been a pretty sad chapter right from the beginning with these talks with the taliban. Talk to our allies. Led by the Afghan Government. Our other friends in the region and beyond. And come up with something that makes sense. And heres heres a fact that a lot of attention isnt paid to. When i left in 2012, we had over 100,000 troops on the ground. Now we have 14,000 and, frankly, the position on the ground is not really worse than when we had over 100,000. So progress is being made here. The afghans are steadily picking up more of the burden and were reducing ours to be effectively where we were in 2012 with onetenth of the force. Thats not bad. All right. Former ambassador ryan crocker, our thanks to you. Really appreciate you being here. Giving your analysis of this. Thank you. I want to put this in context because remember everything the president does on foreign policy, the economy, or the border, is happening as the president is running for reelection. Today was another day in the president s reelection campaign. Joining me now is Washington PostPolitical Columnist david milbanks. You heard the former ambassador speaking there. Saw the developments of the last 24 hours or so. What do you make of the president inviting the taliban to have these talks on american soil . What do you think are the motivations . Well, its extraordinary. And clearly, the 9 11 timing is no coincidence. It appears the president was looking as he did with kim jongun and north korea to sort of have this photo op, to have this grand moment, so hes clearly doing the right thing in calling it off. Of course, this calls attention to why was this being done in the first place. Ambassador crocker, not just the ambassador under obama to afghanistan but under the Bush Administration during the surge in iraq, highly regarded across all parties and all ideologies. Listen to those words hes using. Hes saying, this is surrender. This is surrender to the people who coddled the terrorists, who hit us on september 11th. That would have been a disaster to have gone forward with thisd game. Its been fun over the last 2 1 2 years. What would have happened if obama did the same thing . Oh, i think impeachment would have happened already, sometime this morning, kendis. No, look, i mean, its it goes to the nature of our politics and, you know, the tribal nature. Its not about ideology. Its about the man in power and the man in power right now, the leader of the Republican Party was suddenly saying i want everybody out of afghanistan so suddenly the Republican Party was for that. Actually, this is good news that its getting pack to a position of saying, okay, we just cant cut and run out of afghanistan. As much as wed like to, we cant negotiate with the taliban without having the legitimate government of afghanistan involved. So hopefully this was all done in a terrible way, but the results still may be the right one. Yeah. I also think once i heard this news what would john mccain have said and thought about all of this . Just unbelievable. Turning in his grave, kendis. Im sure. No doubt. Bob menendez, from the senate, the senator from new jersey, was on up earlier this morning. Heres what he told david gura. This is another example of the trump diplomacy which is hi highwire personal diplomacy, not the strategic, thoughtful, effort. You have to wonder in the first place when you were only largely talking to the taliban and not the Afghan Government how you expected at the end of the day to have a success. Yeah, sohig highwire diplomacy. What do you call it . I think its a continuation of what President Trump did as a businessman. He would, you know, have a lot of flash and pizzazz. Hed yell and scream a lot about the people he was negotiating with. Hed sort of badger and bring them to the table. Of course, were not talking about a hotel here. Were talking about afghanistan and the 9 11 terrorists and the people who were supporting them. So its not about, you know, just cutting a deal and getting out of there. This we are dealing with the enemy here and its not as easy as that when youre dealing with government and with International Affairs as it is when youre building a hotel. And that really is a reminder there that it is the enemy theyre dealing with. It is the enemy. And were negotiating with. Dana milbank. Back to the race for the white house and days to go before the third democratic debate. Thursdays faceoff in houston will be a more intimate affair, you might say. At least more than the previous ones. With just ten candidates on a single night, the lineup allows senator Elizabeth Warren to go head to head with joe biden for the first time. The timing is good for warren. With this new abc News Washington post poll showing her gaining scheme. Up six points since july creating a close race between her, Bernie Sanders, and joe biden. Joining me now, again, is rachel bovard, policy director at the conservative partnership. And basal here with me in new york, former executive director of the new york state democratic party. Welcome to all of you. So i want to start with you right here in the studio because you saw there biden versus warren faceoff. I imagine that there are a lot of people who are going to be looking forward to that faceoff come thursday. What will you be looking and listening for . Sure, the two things im really going to be listening for, one, the way that warren and sanders sort of partnered together in the previous debate to sort of makes it progressives against everybody else. I wonder if theyre going to do it this time. It looks like were in a Pivotal Moment in the warren campaign, she can surge in such a way as she present herself as the alternative to joe biden. She not only needs to create some space, needs to gain ground on briiden which shes already doing but create space between her and Bernie Sanders. I wonder the dynamic is going to play out. Secondly, how many arrows is joe biden going to get at the end of the day and from whom . On the trail, hes been shooting some of the arrows at himself. Hes been opening that door, absolutely right. This is also an opportunity for folks like a cory booker, like a julian castro, even to some extent Amy Klobuchar and Kamala Harris to sort of make that appeal to have that moment to sort of regain a little more to come up a little bit in the polls as we get into this sort of next era of the campaign. Rachel, as we were mentioning, those polls are showing warren on the rise. That same poll shows biden as the best to beat trump. Do you agree with that or could warren realistically win against trump . I think the warren surge is real. I think her ground game is incredibly strong and joe biden is running up against the fact that he might not be able to run anymore. I showing a lot of fatigue on the campaign trail. A lot of gaffes. But, again, to your point, we havent seen these two on the debate stage together. And they have a long history of personal animosity going back to before Elizabeth Warren was a senator. I think even from a broad perspective, what were seeing now is the progressive surge of the democrats. Youre not really seeing any moderates on stage. Amy klobuchar is perhaps the closest who can claim that moderate mantle. The rest of the guys are purely progressive liberals. So i think this is the Democrat Party now. Goodbye, moderates. Their ful fully, fully to the left on issues like health care, immigration, Climate Change and abortion. You know, im sorry, i go ahead. One of the things what i look at is not so much moderates versus progressives. I look at biden since hes occupying about a third of the polls, in most of the polls hes about a third of the electorate. I look at it as sort of biden versus disrupters. I say that because when you think about the other candidates in terms of policy, in terms of gender, race, ethnicity, in some way, shape, or form, theyre disrupters. What Bernie Sanders brought to the race from 2016 until now is a lot of policy language and talking points that a lot of the other candidates have absorbed. So its not just about progressive versus moderate. I think there are i think its its joe biden in ways that people think of as the president , older white man, versus disrupters. And that i got to really quickly, rachel, mark sanford, the former governor of south carolina, entered the race today. Will he make a difference . I dont think vanity run than anything else for mark sanford. He didnt win his district. Im not sure how hes going to win the country. Agreed. Well leave it there. Rachel bovard, basil smikle, thanks to both of you guys. Up next, debate night in america. No, no, no, were not talking about the crowded democratic field. Were talking about senator ted cruz set to take on actress alyssa milano. Whos going to be the boss . Sorry, not sorry. This day and age intersecting often especially during this presidency like this recent moment when the Singer Taylor Swift called out the Trump Administration over the equality act. There still is a petition for the equality act which basically says we all deserve equal rights under the law. It has half a million signatures which is five times the amount that it would need to warrant a response from the white house. And then there was this hard hitting interview seen by millions of people with the president ial candidate Bernie Sanders and cardib. At a nail salon in detroit because 2019. And on tuesday expect texas style show down between senator ted cruz and actress alyssa milano. Joining me now is host of woke a. F. And the host of Entertainment Weekly the show. So we get they are going to have this debate on tuesday or later this week with ted cruz and alyssa milano. Its interesting that they will be there talking. You get a sense that at least we are getting ahead and having this conversation and maybe it might have some progress. I mean, sure. Here is the thing. I appreciate celebrities who take on the mantel of being activists and take their responsibility and platforms seriously. I also think that celebrities need to actually have i dont know Strategic Advisers that help them with you know understanding the history and the positions that they need to battle with members of congress. Like this is to me this matchup, if you will between ted cruz and Alyssa Alyssa milano is for the clicks and ratings. Is it really to educate people on gun reform . Am i taking that from whos the boss . Is that what im doing . To be fair, this is for publicity, but it can be an opportunity for people to actually hear the issues, people who have been way too busy to even dial into whats happening may look atomist alyssa milano, may stop and listen to what she has to say about gun reform, about the me too movement, about the state of politics in 2019. Of course, you are seeing deborah messing, as well, who was caught in the cross hairs with President Trump and a celebrity getting in this back and forth. And the only thing that the president loves more than money is celebrity. And these celebrities do get under his skin. I never thought we would be living in an era where Kim Kardashian would be one of the most influential voices in the Prison Reform movement. Thats because our president is obsessed with celebrity. So now more than ever celebrities can play an integral part. They play an integral part. I think what people need to hold up is that while donald trump is in the midst of these twitter battles, there are real things going on in america right now. He is in a twitter battle with deborah messing for wanting to throw her hat in the ring. There are kids that are dying in u. S. Custody. There is a hurricane that was bearing down on the states and he is in a twitter war. While we like the fodder of it i think democrats need to do a better job of saying dont you have work to do. Democrats are saying that. She brought up the names of the trump donors. A lot of people are talking about this sort of donor shaming as being dangerous. Is it . Why is it dangerous . Its all public record. You cannot support someone and say i why shouldnt we know who is giving donald trump money . I dont get that. The only way that we know this information sometimes is because were not combing through the court records. Im all for celebrities using their platforms as long as those platforms are informed by people who are doing the actual work on the ground. Last word to you, because the nfl kicks off today. Secret talks with the taliban called off just days before the anniversary of 9 11. What the white house is saying about the plan to bring taliban leaders to u. S. Soil. And why reports suggest the president s side of the story doesnt quite add up. Plus the search for survivors. Up to 6,000 people now missing in the bahamas as the International Community struggles to get help to those who need it most. Well go live to the hardhit bahamas. The search is on for missing crew members after a massive cargo ship capsizes off the coast of georgia. What happened there . Well tell you about it. We begin with secret talks scheduled on american soil with an organization that harbored terrorists who killed thousands of americans. President trump facing bipartisan back lash for inviting leaders for peace talks on the same week that we commemorate thousands of americans who were killed on 9 11. The president revealed that he cancelled his secret meeting with the taliban long with scheduled talks to the president of afghanistan. The attack killed 12 people including an american soldier. Today secretary of state mike pompeo said he learned of those cancellations during last nights dignified transfer for the fallen u. S. Service members. Now the white house is in full defense mode with secretary mike pompeo standing up for his boss on the sunday show circuit. Watch what he told chuck todd. Fear the taliban conditions are worsening. I want the American People to know that President Trump is taking it to the taliban. I have watched the negotiations unfold. I have watched the taliban do things and say things they have not been permitted to do before. We have been working on this meeting for a little while. After the death of Sergeant First Class brando and the attack by the taliban with a simple effort to improve the negotiating posture, that was something President Trump can never stand for. We informed that these meetings were not going to take place today. Lets get more on this as we head out to the white house. Let me try to get a timeline here on how these talks may have fallen apart. They were supposed to happen this weekend. So in theory, it takes a good 18 hours for you to get here from kabul. Those folks were already in the air. When did these things fall apart . We dont know if they are in the air. I dont know that for certain. I think according to pompeo the decision was made on thursday and the secretary of state wasnt informed until he was at the overnight event receiving the dignified transfer of the remains of the soldier thoat did on thursday. Atop the list is the idea that the president has been negotiating with the taliban. He has authorized aides to negotiate with the taliban while the taliban has been doing these battlefield tactics. They have been going after american troops and afghans. They even tried to aassassinate Scotty Miller in afghanistan. Throughout all of that violence, talks have been proceeding. So its slightly unbelievable that the talks were cancelled because of the single american death however tragic. There is an acknowledgment that you need a negotiated settlement to the war and that you need some sort of peace talks to end the violence. Now, there has been criticism inside and outside the administration of the approach that theyre taking, namely that this conversation has been taking place just with the taliban and not the Afghan Government. These talks that we have been witnessing now have taken place without the government of afghanistan present. When i held them, i did so at the request of the government and with the government there, but the president is delegitimizing the Afghan Government as we de. This is about surrender. This isnt about peace. In addition to the criticisms of the peace talks, there is also criticism of the location and that is camp david. There have been other characters that have gone throughout time, people who have been considered americas adversaries. Here is what liz cheney from wyoming had to say about it. She said no member of the taliban should set foot there ever. The taliban still harbors al qaeda. Is there anything we will be learning is that a lot of the breaks, a lot of nay sayers of having a negotiated piece will be coming from his own party. Conservatives think President Donald Trump could potentially be making the same mistake in afghanistan that they accused barack obama of making in iraq. That is to say leaving too early, leaving before the peace was solidified. So the next 24 to 48 hours they should be looking to see what the republican criticism of this is, not just of the location, but of the overall strategy of trying to draw down troops and a negotiated settlement with a group that hasnt entirely renounced terrorism. Pretty striking part of that tweet from liz cheney was that he said that camp david was where u. S. Leaders met to prota response after 9 11. Quite striking there. Thank you. Thousands of bahamas residents faced off with a tough decision today, to stay and rebuild or leave the country they once called home. More than 70,000 people were left homeless by the storm. The population of the entire island chain is only about 400,000. So 1,400 vacues arrived in west palm beach, florida. The bahamas is facing a long recovery and customs and Border Patrol and the u. S. Government is pleased to do what we think to help our neighbors. Joining me now from the bahamas is cal perry. You are there in nassau which did get a little bit of flood damage. Lets focus on whats happening on the island there where there are massive Recovery Efforts underway to try to help their neighbors. Reporter you know, the good news here is we are hearing from the authorities in the bahamas that the air space is getting overcrowded from all the helicopters and planes that you can hear taking off behind me. That is good news. The bad news is this is really now moving into a recovery operation. When you look at the damage on these islands, it is so extensive. It is impossible to imagine that anybody would have survived the storm. Delta airlines has an update and has managed to get a plane out to abacos island to start to evacuate people and bring them here to nassau. We are hearing more from bema that they are asking people to open their homes. Take a listen to the director who spoke a short time ago. This is to all communities in need is still a challenge. With the helicopter support, we are able to get muchneeded supplies into abaco. About 7,000 to 10,000 persons in need of food and water. Reporter the concern is this country has been through one major disaster and its about fending off the next disaster which means getting the people on the islands off of those islands, bringing them here and housed and being able to clean up the islands and continuing on with their recovery effort. It is going to be a long road ahead for so many of those people. Thankful to know that a lot of people are coming together. Tyler perry mentioned was sending his plane to help the people in the bahamas. Pack here at home, senator Elizabeth Warren on the rise. Thats a word from new numbers out today. We may have gotten the hint in this rousing reception that she received in New Hampshire. [ cheers and applause [ cheers and applause ] you dont normally hear that sort of loud reception for most politicians. It took nearly two minutes for the crowd to calm down. The warm reception coming from her neighboring state there in New Hampshire, pretty close to her home state. Former Vice President joe biden is leading the pack at 27 . Senators Bernie Sanders and warren closing in with 19 and 17 respectively. Biden and warren will meet facetoface on the debate stage for the first time thursday. Joining me now eugene scott. As you mentioned, this poll that is out with the Washington Post abc news poll, you guys put this out here. What stood out to you as being very striking . I think despite warrens rise, what i was most surprised by is just how significant bidens lead still appears to be. Many people i speak with on the ground are very interested in hearing more of what warren has to say. They really like her ideas. They like that she has lots of plans. People who i speak with who tend to be more interested in what he represents, what he offers in terms of an alternative to the president that is currently in the white house and also appreciating his history with barack obama. But not a lot of support for actually knowing what biden is going to do if he gets into the white house. And so there are two main groups i find myself talking to and hearing different things, one being attracted to ideas and one also being attracted perhaps to like image and representation. You get a sense that people are not paying attention to the biden gaffs that have taken place throughout the summer . There are no biden supporter that i have spoken with that has expressed significant concern about the gaffs. There certainly are other democrats who are looking at candidates other than biden who have said they are not sure that he is in the best position to be in the white house, that they believe he has baggage that they perhaps believe his sharpest moments may be behind him. People who seem to be on the same page or behind biden havent brought up the gaffs as something that they are deeply concerned about. Lets look a little deeper into the poll. When matched against trump, bidens favored by 45 . His nearest competitor senator sanders you see down there at 14 . And i do as we look at those numbers keep note that we are still 147 days away from iowa. What does that tell you there . I think biden in his announcement video made it very clear that what he believes he represents most strongly is a clear alternative to trump. It seems like people who are supporting him are viewing him as such and are buying that and they certainly like democratic politics. Ultimately, they want him to be someone who can beat trump and reverse trumpism. Thats what he has campaigned on. Thats what he believes he would be the best person to do. What is the difference between the top tier candidates . Bernie sanders turned 78 years old today. Joe biden 76. Elizabeth warren is 70. You get a lot of people who are saying he just seems like a young candidate. Hes older than reagan was bh he ran. She has the energy that a lot of people are very attracted to. They think she is lively and energetic and ready to go. She has these plans. She herself attributes it to how many years she spent in the classroom directly working with younger people thats given her some life perhaps. People really want to see that when it comes to the next leader of the country, someone who is actually intentional and appears to actually want to do the job, willing to do the research and look at the information necessary to make the decisions that are most helpful when it comes to leading the country. Well leave it there. Appreciate your analysis and the polling and information that you guys put out there today at the Washington Post. Up next, the new push for impeachment. Congressional democrats want to hit the ground running when they come back from their lengthy august recess, the white house scandals that theyll focus on starting tomorrow. He also blasted the House OversightCommittee Chair whose district includes parts of baltimore. Notably, the hotel hosting the retreat falls outside of cummings district. Representative cummings will join us next hour to discuss that very trip and what sort of charming welcome the city of baltimore will dpiv the president when he goes there this week. Just down the road about 40 minutes, congressional leaders are returning to capitol hill after their sixweek recess. The House Judiciary Committee is preparing to take the first vote on an ongoing impeachment investigation. Here are the numbers, 134 out of 235 Democratic House members support impeachment proceedings plus one independent. Joining me now is amy holmes. And the host of sirius xms woke a. F. Podcast. Who is talking impeachment . I talk impeachment every day. The American People, democrats and progressives are very interested in impeachment. Its not about just removing donald trump from office which we know that moscow 34i67 will never do. The purpose of impeachment is to enlighten and educate the American Public on criminal activity going on and has been detailed in the Mueller Report and that continues to happen in front of our faces on a day to day basis. This president is a criminal, a thief and a liar. We have seen just with the sketches of alabama how far the agencies and once credible admirables are willing to go to lie to the American People in order to save face for donald trump. That is dangerous. There are things that he continues to do like get bank rolled by pence, by william barr that are throwing money at trump resorts. There is a problem here and needs to be held accountable for that. You do that through impeachment. Well get to that in a second there. I assume that a lot of republicans on the hill or beyond, they hear that they are going to start these impeachment proceedings investigations and probably saying bring it on. Some republicans are actually welcome impeachment proceedings because it would get democrats so off track from winning messages with the American People on issues, pocket book issues and the American People are not going to be impeaching President Trump over sharpy gate. Thats ridiculous. If you want accountability for any politician including the president of the United States, we have a process for that. Its rr called elections and theyre coming up. With this impeachment process what were seeing from the democratic side you and your listeners might be excited and ready to pop the popcorn, we have seen democratic leadership trying to put on the brakes. They are telling the left flank of their party this is not going to be good for democrats. We need to beat donald trump in 2020 in november with a winning candidate. I want to note what politico is reporting. They are saying that democrats are hopeful that by explicitly defining their impeachment inquiry it will heighten the leverage to compel testimony from witnesses. Maybe thats whats all in play. He tried to file articles of impeachment directly after President Trump was elected. So it seems like any excuse will do to try to get this thats actually not the case. Its not about excuses. We know this president is absolutely criminal. We know he has colluded with russia and has things that are under handed and go against the constitution. If we allow donald trump to get away with things that republicans would never in gods name if it was a democratic that pulled half the things donald trump has done would not be mowing down the white house to drag him out. No american colluded with russia in the election. Except for the 38 indictments. Let me move on to the other controversy that the president is facing. The resort in scotland. The air force has released a statement saying the stop overof u. S. Air force is not unusual. They made reservations through the defense travel system is used the closest available and least expensive accommodations within the allowable hotel rates. Could this be a little more of an ethics problem for the administration than first thought . Yeah. Because all of a sudden, apparently americans, the military, the Vice President , the attorney general couldnt do anything, couldnt stay anywhere without going to a trump hotel. I dont know where the obama there is something wrong there. When pence has to come out and say dont worry about it, i use my own money to stay on the opposite side of ireland or william barr is saying i am using my own money to pay into the coffers of donald trump. This is ethically wrong. You stipulated that they used their own money. They can use their money to stay wherever they want. If they are trying to gain favor with the boss is that any surprise. I think ethics violation has to do with the militarys choice of that hotel. There is no legal problem with that that we also know. Two pout of three cases having to do with trump hotels have been thrown out of court. Th this network reported could be construed and defined as to say putting money in President Donald Trumps pockets which these expenditures did not do. Going to have to leave it there. Joining me now by skype is world central kitchen relief Operations Manager working with the celebrity chef jose andres. Can you hear me . Can you hear me . I can hear you. I should mention, as we are speaking, you are taking part in the humanitarian effort right now. What exactly are you dpiez doing . Right at the moment we are sending food out to abacos. You see it on tv. We have been there on the ground for four or five days. We have been carrying food back and forth on helicopters two, sometimes three a day. Theyre working with the celebrity chef were sending one helicopter over there in an emergency food drop so our team can get on the road while it is still light out serving people at the airport, schools, hospitals. We have about 13 places. There are a lot of folks we are probably serving 5,000 to 6,000 meals a day and continuing to explore and find other pockets of folks who need help. You are working with the organization that is held by jose andres who is a very famous chef. You see some of his video there. He was in the thick of it nearby during the storm and immediately had this effort to try to feed so many people. Josh, the chef and so many people there find that this is one of the key and most important things that is needed after a disaster like this one. Why so . Well, particularly for this one, the storm was so slow and took one to two days to cross the island before it hit free port. People didnt eat for two days. While search and rescue is going on, people also need to eat. They dont have access to food. You have to worry about a meal and have time making other decisions and getting where you need to go and try to get off the island. We want to keep people alive and also do it with delicious food. Its been exactly one week since that storm made its first landfall and pretty much within this hour we were on air talking about it. Its been a week. I know thats not a long time. How devastated are many of these areas . I mean, its really bad. I was looking at some of the stuff provided by the government. Its going to be plans to get infrastructure back up. It will be a year or more before things are back not even to normal. Grand bahamas they are still moving and assessments are going from east to how does that storm compare . How does this one compare . Theyre all different. Flooding on this one was really bad. Thats what the worst part of this was the flooding combined with the high winds. In Hurricane Michael it was very quick. Upwards of what category 5 and beyond. That just destroyed everything in its path. In an unprecedented tv event lester holt holds a televised town hall from a prison. We are inside the walls of the correctional facility in new york state. There has never been a town hall meeting on the grounds of a maximum security prison. We have gathered some of the top speakers and experts on criminal Justice Reform issues along with victims, family members of the incarcerated and some of the incarcerated themselves to talk about the various issues. Is prison for example supposed to be a place of punishment or a place of redemption and rehabilitation . There is a push in the country, a conversation that was hard to have even five years ago about criminal Justice Reform. We have seen bipartisan movements, certainly the first step at the federal act that reduces the sentences of nonviolent drug offenders. It is truly just a first step. John legend, the singer and activist on this very issue will join us for this conversation. We hope you will join us, as well. There is another issue involving criminal Justice Reform. Should felons be allowed to cast a ballot . In florida, the republican lawmakers have added what a lawsuit claims amounts to a poll tax requires former convicts to pay all court and restitution fees to be eligible to vote. Joining me now, msnbc legal analyst. Were going beyond that florida law right now and discussing a lot of people are also considering the possibility that current serving felons, why arent they allowed to vote . Its the Biggest Issue apparently in wisconsin. Constitutionally felony disenfranchisement has been around since the beginning of our country and dates back to ancient rome, medieval europe. Its been around for a while. And restricting the right of felons to vote is different than other kinds of restrictions on the fundamental right of voting because the constitution and its amendments explicitly allow it. At least, thats what many read the constitution as saying. Because each state is allowed to dictate their own voting requirements, you end up with a Patchwork Quilt of some states with very restrictive felony disenfranchisement laws and others like vermont and maine that allow prisoners to vote. Im surprised that there hasnt been maybe there has been a felon whos gotten a lawyer, taken it to the Supreme Court and saying we still have our rights. Why arent we allowed to vote . Because they would lose. The felon disenfranchisement does not by itself violate the equal protection clause of the constitution. It is constitutionally permitted. It has been challenged. But so far we have many states that have some form of felony disenfranchisement. It is constitutionally permissib permissible. What makes the florida issue complicated is this question. This is what it boils down to. If florida has the right to ban a felon from voting for the rest of his or her life, then if they already have that right, does it then become unconstitutional if they add financial conditions on it . In other words, they dont have to allow anyone the right to vote for the rest of their lives. What does it matter if florida says you can vote, you just have to pay fines and court fees before you do. On the other hand, there is a strong argument that thats really a poll tax by another name. Lets call it what it is. If that gets to go through, doesnt it open the flood gates on other people who might not be excons. They say no in order to vote you have to pay off this bill and your parking tickets, et cetera . It could. There is a very specific carve out for felons in the constitution that allows the states to restrict their right to vote. If youre a felon, not only can your right to vote be restric d restricted, you can be banned from holding office. Restricting the right to vote based on felony conviction is very different from other kinds of discrimination of the right to vote like pole tax or based on race or religion because felony disenfranchisement is constitutional even if it feels very imoral. There are some 14 states and District Of Columbia who automatically restore Voting Rights after felons are released from prison. And some 20 plus countries that allow currently serving felons you see the states with Voting Rights for felons for exkonz. There are 20 countries including australia, canada, Czech Republic that allow them if serving to be able to serve. Im not sure it will get much traction. Bernie sanders is among one of those who is big on this move. Danny will stick around with us. Our justice for all series continues tonight on msnbc.
