Good afternoon, everyone, im kendis gibson. Mass commandos seizing a British Oil Tanker. The Iranian Revolutionary guard releasing this video saying this was an act of retaliation. The president continues his tough talk. Its very easy to straighten out or its very easy for us to make it a lot worse. Plus, the president fueling the political flames. People in the crowd who chanted send her back at omar were incredible patriots. And the massive heat dome from maine to miami and across the midwest. We start with the tension with iran. Releasing this new video moments ago. Irans elite revolutionary guard capturing that british tanker. You can see them propelling down from helicopters. This is what were talking about the strait of hormuz the seizure happened right there. One of the busiest and most important waterways in the world for the oil industry. This comes as iran denies President Trumps claim the countrys Deputy Foreign minister fired back on twitter saying the u. S. May have shot down their own drone. As tensions escalate, the u. S. Is sending hundreds of additional troops to saudi arabia to a former u. S. Base. They countered the possibility that this threat from iran is growing. Hans nichols is tracking the president and his movements in new jersey today. And ali ruzzi joins us from iran. We saw these new pictures that were released. Tell us about it. Reporter the speed boats has always been a concern for the u. S. Helicopters are flying above. Theyre propelling on to the deck of the ship, its provocative. Thats exactly what iran wanted everyone to see. Its a clear message from tehran that if their assets, their interests in the persian gulf, in the backyard are put under danger, if they cant sell their oil, theyre going to make life very difficult and very expensive for everybody else that wants to use that vital waterway. Because if there are so many incidents there, the price of insurance goes up, if youre talking about military escorts, that costs a lot of money. And when tensions like this spike so does the price of oil thats not good for the u. S. , its good for iran, who sell limited oil. Theyd like to sell it for more. Part of the statement that came out from the revolutionary guard which isnt shown in that video, they say a british warship was also accompanying that oil tanker, and tried to stop the revolutionary guard from seizing the British Oil Tanker, but the revolutionary guards british warship was unsuccessful and they were able to execute their mission. Theres some 23 crew members still on board that tanker. It is now at the port in the south of iran. Most of the crew are indian, some russians, iranian authorities here are saying that they are going to question or interrogate that crew in part of a full investigation. But tensions just keep escalating. It would appear to be a big escalation. We want to get hans nichols to weighin on this. Hes traveling with the president. Have we heard anything from the president and what do we make of that move by the pentagon to send additional troops to saudi arabia. Reporter the pentagon deployment had been long planned. I wouldnt read it as a direct response to what happened either with the drone incident or the seizing of this British Oil Tanker. Were going to hear from the secretary of state in a few minutes. Well see to what extent he tries to chart a diplomatic course or whether hes going to take a more belacose approach. What we saw from the president was a little bit of both yesterday. He said iran is in big trouble, iran isnt working out. He seemed to say iran is the problem. He seemed to be distancing himself to what the u. S. s obligation is to the United Kingdom saying, this is a british ship. We dont have a formal written agreement, they are in close contact with their british counterpart. Heres whaes happening right now. Western diplomats are trying to cobble together a way to protect the waterways. The u. S. Wont do all the heavy lifting. The u. S. Does have assets in the region. The fifth fleet is based in bahrain. Theyre patrolling these waters by sea and air. Given the amount of traffic that goes through there, its difficult to give every single ship an escort. Well see what shape this Coalition Takes and whether or not it has the form and the function to actually take care of all those ships going through the straight of hormuz. Right now, diplomats are still talking, and we need to hear from the chief u. S. Diplomat about what the u. S. s course of action will be. Mike pompeo is traveling with the president , assuming theyve had some discussions about these tensions. Did he plan to speak with the press . And will that be live . Whats the case . Reporter we have monitors up, so we expect pompeo to be speaking live. I dont believe i i could be wrong, i dont believe hes traveling with the president. Hes elsewhere in the world on a long scheduled trip. Wherever pompeo is this is an opportunity for him to talk to the press. I expect the reporters are going to want to know what this is. The president s a little unclear on this, he seemed to be blessing this effort by senator rand paul to serve as a mediator, at the same time, rand paul was one of many senators that are out there. And at one point he seemed to be suggesting that things are going to work out great with iran. Another point he said iran is in big trouble. Its not so much mixed message, its inconsistent from the president , and well see if pompeo can clear it up. I should note to our viewers were hoping to get that News Conference or that statement from mike pompeo live, if thats the case, we will bring it to you live. We will continue to monitor that, and see what he has to say. Back to tehran and ali whos over there. You get a sense that tensions are increasing. Reporter there seems to be an absence of dialogue, the rhetoric seems to be heating up, and weve had a lot of close calls over the last few months. Its been alarming how close everything has come over the last few months. Both sides have shown a modicum of restraint. Thats probably one of the reasons were not in a conflict right now. The longer this stretches out, the more heated rhetoric there is between the two sides, and the lack of direct dialogue. Then we have the risk of stumbling into some sort of conflict by accident, and thats whats worrying everybody. These two sides are not talking to each other, theyre blaming each other. Theyre taking Counter Measures for things the other side has done, drone for drone, tanker for tanker. At some point, the fear is this could run out of hand at some lower level soldier could fire a shot. And all before you know it, were all vfled in a major war. Which would be a very serious conflict with iran, because it has so many proxies, spread across this region. This would not be a war isolated in iran, it would probably inflame the entire middle east. So theres a lot of concern, and when i speak to people in iran, regular folks here, its a double whammy for them. Theyve been hit hard by economic sanctions and theyre terrified of a conflict looming around the corner. I think a lot of people have joined them in being terrified of the looming conflict. Thanks to ali arouzi and hans nichols. Lets bring in the panel right now. Joining me is ned price and general barry mccaffrey. Thank you both for joining me. Ned, i know youre there at the security forum, what are you hearing there on the ground about the u. S. Iran relations. Weve heard from Senior Defense officials and Senior Administration officials here in an attempt it seems has tamped down tensions there has not been talk of any imminent war, weve heard from President Trump in recent days, saying he does not want a war. As the general knows better than anyone, that is not the question that is posed to the president in the situation. Mr. President , do you want to go to war. I think you will hear this quietly from Administration Officials as well. We could stumble into something we dont intend to stumble into. This is a strategy of escalation for the sake of escalation and provocation for the sake of provocation. And President Trump has made the decision, somewhat bafflingly to surround himself with advisers who are hawks on iran. People like john bolton and mike pompeo, who have long called for a military solution is the only way to ensure iran remains without a nuclear weapon. I think that is what worries many of us, even if there is not even if we dont intend to good to war, we could find ourselves in a precarious situation that could culminate in something that no one intended. A lot of people worried about the missteps or misunderstandings that could easily take place there in the gulf. I want to get your take on the piece of video iran released in the last couple hours. Kind of interesting to see these masked men masked people repelling down on to that tanker. What do you make of that as you take a look at that video . Well, look, i think need has it right. No one actually wants war in the persian gulf right now. The problem is, it will horizontally escalate. The chances of the iranians with long range missile strikes bringing the israelis into it with attacks by hez bala or hamas are enormous. Theres a red line here if the iranians go after the u. S. Navy, i think the outcome will be an immediate significant u. S. Military response. Im not sure they know that. The iranians are looking at trump saying, this guy doesnt want war, i think theyre reading him directly. Hes very impulsive, very unpredictable. The military assets are there, we have a carrier ballot group as ned points out, the chances of miscalculation are significant. On the talks front, there are reports that the Iranian Foreign minister met with rand paul. Rand is a friend of mine, and rand asked me if he could get involved. The answer is yes. And if other senators ask me to get involved, id probably say yes, depending on who they were. Well see what happens, i have many people involved. And iran is going to work out very nicely. You know this stuff very well, and you know this region after being there in the obama administration. What do you make of how this administration is playing out this entire game when it comes to iran . Any one of the real dangers here, this administration has not had lines of communication open with the Iranian Regime. Theyve been conducted in a vacuum, and as your correspondent on the ground in bedminster said, weve heard not just mixed messages from this administration, but a whole series of messages. Some of which are entirely incoherent with one another. Those on the ground in tehran could be forgiven for not having a clear picture of what it is that the Trump Administration is trying to do, if you were to ask three trump Administration Officials what their iran strategy was, you would probably get five different answers. In my estimation, its a good news story that senator paul met with them. There are some in this white house like john bolton who dont see it as a good news story, i think thats why we learned of these talks. Theres some in the white house who dont want to see this channel of communications succeed senator paul brings a different orientation. The strategy of regime change in everything but name that weve heard from john bolton and mike pompeo. General to you, we noted that were sending 500 troops to saudi arabia, to an air base that the u. S. Hasnt used in some 15 years. What do you make of that . Not much. Most of our air power and naval power is already in the region. If theres a significant escalation, youll see 15,000 people head to the middle east to support the air campaign. Thats not going to happen. I think at the end of the day, look, the economic blockade is actually working. Why are we surprised by that . In past years, it never seemed to do anything but punish the people and not the elites. In this case, the revolutionary guard is sending criminal Economic Organization is suffering from being separated from these economic sanctions. We have to give them a way out the military power is there to back up a soft approach. Anything else . Net price. Our thanks to you. Walking back, his walk back. Last weekend, trump riling up his base and angering many by tweeting what some are calling a racist remark about four Congress Women of color, calling them unamerican. In response to his attacks, supporters erupted into sind her back chants, now the president is thinking he did nothing to lead the rally cry against ilhan omar. This also comes after his about face. Just yesterday, praising the crowd for echoing his criticism against minority democrats. Julia crave n host of real talk. Welcome to all of you. Whats behind this racist rhetoric at the white house. Is it a strategy or a winning one at that . Kendis, it is part of a strategy, and the president is really trying to elevate these four Progressive Democratic women who have been attacking, and paint them as the face of the party in order to portray democrats as extreme. Hes also trying to really rile up his mostly white political bis by attacking them we saw that at the rally, we saw it at the tweets last weekend, its debatable its going to work. If you motivate your base, you can run the risk of motivating the other sides base, in equal parts. For the states hen watts to win, in parts of it, they may work, in places like North Carolina where he was on wednesday. Lets be very clear. Thats a quote made by Lindsey Graham before he lost his mind and his spinal cord at the same time. Donald trump is a race baiting, xe xenophobic religious bigot. And then he lost all his credibility. Let me tell you why the president s tweet is racist. 70 of americans agree it is racially offensive. We never heard him say that about a white american. We are a land of immigrants which means this. Every white american, black american you see, we came from somewhere else, even though hes had political destination with others politically, he has never told white men or white women he disagreed with to go back to their country of origin. Interesting take, you say that 70 of people think the president s comments were racist. I was interested to see what people think about this across the cun. If youre here, you have to enjoy being here and you have to want to be here. I think thats disrespectful and very hurtful. If he keeps up this rate, hes going to give it to the socialists. Go back to where you came from, its not a racial thing, its where they lived before they came to washington, d. C. Thats how things are right now with this administration. I think its sad we have someone like trump in the white house as a racist. Its hard to be surprised. Its easy to be disgusted. The Great American divide. The president certainly started a conversation with this, but is it the right one . No. I would say that were wasting our time debating whether or not this is racist. What he said was racist, thats just a fact. When we spend a lot of our time mulling over whether or not its racist or how he plays as a political strategy, what were doing is wasting time, when we should be focused on his policies. Let me get you to weighin on that part there. Are we missing it by talking about these comments and forgetting that there are many justices that are being passed through to a lifetime appointment. Are we missing the other things . No, i think you need to talk about all of it, hes president of the United States. His bias plays into his policy design. His actual bias that we see publicly, on twitter, provides context for his exacting policy, i dont think you have one without the other, i think theyre very connected politically. Jordan, really quickly. I think some of his supporters care about the policies, others are motivated by the same grievances that the president holds, this is going to speak to some of his supporters as we just saw in the segment just before. We should mention about 20 of americans in a new poll by the way, by survey monkey. Did find the president s comments were no doubt in the south now believe that Race Relations are getting better, thats up from 6 from last september. Thanks to you all. Jordan fabian, thank you. Julian and rashad, stick around with us. Things are heating up. Soaring temperatures bearing down on more than 100 million americans, well show you how people are trying to beat the heat. Theyre calling it a heat dome, and apparently its plopped right now over a big swath of the u. S. This weekend the National Weather surface has issued a heat warning for more than 126 million americans the warning stretch from the central u. S. In places like kansas, up into the east coast. New york city will feel like 110 degrees, washington, d. C. , will feel like 111. Even out in iowa. Heres a little bit of an impact its having. The sioux falls highway is buckling under the heat index. Its being blamed for the death of a new york giants player who died from heat stroke after working out in little rock arkansas. I know they had to cancel a big event here in new york. Reporter kendis, that is right. The mayor called off the triathlon. Because of the extreme heat and humidity. In the name of safety, thats why they decided this was not a good idea to move forward with this, we are here in Madison Square park. Typically on a saturday afternoon this area is packed with people, look how many empty seats are available. The shake shack is over there to my right, people have found a little corner, a little shade to cool off. This has been like this all afternoon long. This is something to keep in mind. The humidity is intense, it feels like 106 degrees you want to drink plenty of water and stay in the shade if you can. Up to 200 Million People affected by this heat wave. The stage is now set for the second president ial debate in detroit. We know who will take the stage on each night of the motor city. As we come down to the debate, a new nbc survey monkey poll shows joe biden leading the pack. Mike memoli is with senatoren sadders in Council Bluff iowa and joins us from inside its about 95 in Council Bluffs. I believe that the heat in hot it may have melted the microphone. As you can see there has been a little bit of movement thats taken place. Joining me, jermichael singleton contributing host of fox media. Stephanie, the debate lineup also sets up joe harris for another faceoff. Can we expect fireworks . I think we can expect fireworks to happen at the next debate in fact im going to call it the thrilla in detroit. Were going to see Kamala Harris call out biden, hes going to have to be prepared for the punches that senator harris is sure to bring. She will continue to dominate the stage when we look to the following night when we have this matchup between senator Bernie Sanders and senator Elizabeth Warren, thats going to be an opportunity for us to see these progressive candidates show themselves. For the first debate were feeling out each other. You get a sense now that the gloves are off . I think the first debate is going to be more interesting. You have moderates on the stage with warren and sanders. Theyre going to have to distinguish themselves from one another. You see a lot of those numbers are being taken from bernien sadders who have flat lined. When you look at Bernie Sanders and Kamala Harris, he has to worry about cory booker. You may see them take a shot. They came to his defense after Kamala Harris attacked biden. I found this interesting when i was watching them on thursday night. All the candidates of color will be debating on the same night . Thats going to be interesting to see will we see castro come for Kamala Harris record. Will we see people on the stage who are talking about what theyre going to do for the latino community. I think were going to get an opportunity to hear from candidates, what their platform is to progress all of americans. Especially those who are left fortunate, im looking forward to a lot of specific policy areas being discussed on that night. Im curious about this. You have the president s recent comment about women of color there how do you think that will color this debate . I mean, it has to come up, it has to come up in the sense that democrats need to figure out a way to distinguish to the voter what theyre going to do thats better for the country than what donald trump has presented. That case has to be made to voters in certain states. Michigan is a state that donald trump won. The reason he won is turnout decreased. I think a lot of voters will be looking at them to see how their lives will go better. They see the racial tinge going up in this country and they say, i have a lot to lose. You have the governor of montana traveling this week, they were saying that hes their dark horse do you believe that stuff . No. I mean, i think its good to be optimistic, we have to be realistic. You continue to have biden leading in the polls, even after not having a very good debate time the last time, i think we will continue to see the four frontrunners be the four frontrunners. I dont think this is going to be a surprise even with mayor buttigieg who has the highest fundraising numbers this quarter. Hes not been able to crack into the top four. I think these four top candidates are in it for the long hall. I dont expect a lot of surprises to come from the back to go in front of either one of those four. Just to see, this is sort of like the before picture poll well see if anybody gets any sort of traction. When you look at this poll number right now, and you see joe biden had 25 , the reason for that is, people realize that whoever the nominee is, that person has to increase turnout and win in key western states. They need to win the popular vote. But still lose again in part because of an inability to win the Electoral College which does rest on a few states so that has to be in the mind of each and every one of those individuals in the next couple days. Im going to go with the showdown in motown as opposed to the thrilla in detroit. Okay, i can go with that. Thank you for joining me this saturday. Up next, case closed. Why the fbi believed President Trump and hope hicks knew about the hush money scheme to play off a porn star. Off a porn star. Award winning interface. Award winning design. Award winning engine. The volvo xc90. The most awarded luxury suv of the century. Did you know about the payments . Later on i knew. Later on. What he did and they werent taken out of Campaign Finance. Thats a bigger thing. Did they come out of the campaign . They didnt come out of the campaign. They came from me. They didnt come out of campaign. My first question when i heard about it was, did they come out of the campaign . That could be a little dicey. And they didnt come out of the campaign. And thats big. Its not even a campaign violati violation. President trump telling fox and friends he did not know about the payments until later on. According to newly released documents, they prove that was a lie opinion it turns out candidate trump took part in multiple phone calls. Joining me now Charlie Savage and barbara mcquaid. What have we learned from these unsealed documents we didnt know before . Prosecutors or the fbi obtained phone records that showed an intense flurry of communications between Michael Cohen, hope hicks and the lawyer for Stormy Daniels in the month of october immediately following the access hollywood case as Michael Cohen was scrambling to keep these women quiet a month later. It sets up a strong strong circumstantial case, that contrary to what President Trump has said, they knew in realtime, but it doesnt have conclusive proof they knew in realtime these are phone records that show who knew what when . We knew they had this fevered pitch of phone calls but we dont know what exactly took place. We also got text messages. Yeah, i think its a fair inference that they were talking about this topic, even though its not wiretap evidence the fbi agent says they had not talked to Michael Cohen in some months, and after the access Hollywood Tape comes out theyre calling back back and forth. Of course, why no criminal charges against President Trump . The Southern District of new york is bound by the same doj policy as Robert Mueller was that a sitting president cannot be charged. That doesnt mean that what he did was okay. I think there are many ways to hold the president accountable besides indictment. Lets pop up that graphic again the timing is amazing to me. Four minutes, eight minutes. Another conversation, this is 10 days before the election. Another conversation on the 26, and then on the 27th, you see the highlight there of the payoff to Stormy Daniels, a couple weeks before the election. They call it reasonable inference. Could that be prosecuted in a court. At least when it comes to hope hicks . Barbara . I think there is evidence that the act occurred. The piece of evidence that might be lacking is willfulness. Its not enough that someone made these payments to silence someone from saying things that could be damaging to the candidate. But you have to know its against the law. This is a much higher standard of intent. Its was the Campaign Finance laws are complex. You have to show they knew what they were doing was illegal. I would submit that there is some evidence when you go through elaborate processes to conceal something. If hope hicks lied about her knowledge her understand iing o participation in these calls, or the lengths Michael Cohen went to in setting up a shell partnership. Those are the kinds of things that could be used to show the person did know this was illegal. Michael cohen was testifying yesterday. Of course hes serving a couple years, four years behind bars. Could he realistically testify at this point . Hes already testified. One of the things hes guilty of is lying under oath, hes a damaged witness in terms of his credibili credibility. Just for viewers at home, to think clearly about this were talking about two Different Things here, theres hope hicks who testified to congress she denied any knowledge of what happen happened her lawyer saying, no, she didnt mislead anyone. Thats one set of legal troublings, trump has never talked to congress or the fbi about this particular thing. The question for him is to investigate Campaign Finance law s they exceeded the limit and were not reported. Which as we know from august last year they kept saying it has nothing to do with his campaign. Those payments. If they did happen at the time. Were following an interesting story here thats been developing over the last couple weeks, we told about it last week, the arrest of the rapper asap rocky, its now garnered the attention of many folks including the president of the United States. Hes been locked up for three weeks, after an alleged assault in stockholm sweden, the rapper and his celebrity friends are turning to President Trump to advocate for his freedom. I know the president was saying he spoke with the Prime Minister of sweden, whats the read out from there . Im going to venture a guess that swedens Prime Minister probably didnt start out this week thinking he was going to end up on the phone with the u. S. President discussing the fate of an american rap artist, thats the kind of 2019 were having. Asap rocky is not going to get special treatment from his country. Hes emphasized instead, swedens judiciary is independent. The u. S. President tweeted just had a very good call with the swedish Prime Minister who assured me asap rocky will be treated fairly. Likewise, i assured him asap was not a flight risk and offered to personally vouch for his bail. Sweden doesnt have a bail system. Its not the way their judicial system functions. Even the president of the United States is not going to be able to bail out asap rocky. Thousands of people have signed a petition. Celebrities like Kim Kardashian west and Jada Pinket Smith all speaking out today. Hes very famous. A lot of people are concerned about him. Sara harmon is there from london. Thank you, sara. Julie is back with me. Julia, let me start with you, the president said on friday that the reason hes interviewing intervening is because Melania Trump and several of his black friends personally appealed to him on asaps behalf. What do you make of that . It sounded in line with things trump says. He seems to point to his africanamerican friends. I saw that he was on the phone with kanye about asap rocky, just sounds on brand. He didnt want to be a voice for the black lives matter movement. Every life matters, hes been a champion to the cause. There are many in need of help. Is laughable to think that trump gives a damn about an asap rocky rap artistp he wants to transform the narrative from him being racist against four women of color in the u. S. Congress. This is a much better story line for him than what it has been for the last week or so, given his racist and offensive tweet. This is nothing but a political pivot. It does show you that trump is concerned about how he has come across lately with his rhetoric against these women of color. And he would rather run against them than run against the people who are actually running for president. This is nothing but a trick, nothing more. His friend said, i appreciate you trying to help, but while youre at it, can you also let those kids out of cages. Interesting take there from j. B. If you recall 2018 trump took credit for the release of the ucla basketball players in the Detention Center in china. Do you think the three ucla basketball players will say thank you, President Trump. They were headed for ten years in jail. You think hed expect the same sort of thing. I think he would. This is someone who does things to get credit for them. I think he would expect the same of asap rocky, he would be like, just thank me for what it is that i just did for you. Lets leave it there. Thank you guys. Coming up in the next hour, the president now says the people at his rally were patriots, despite what some are calling racist chants. Well discuss. Could there be another around the corner . Or could it turn out differently . I wanted to help protect myself. My doctor recommended eliquis. Eliquis is proven to treat and help prevent another dvt or pe blood clot. Almost 98 percent of patients on eliquis didnt experience another. And eliquis has significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. Eliquis is fda approved and has both. Dont stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. Eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. Dont take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. If you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness. While taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily. And it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. Seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. Tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. Whats around the corner could be surprising. Ask your doctor about eliquis. Good afternoon, everyone. President ial flipflop. First the president said he didnt approve of what some are calling racist chants, even saying he tried to stop it. Those are incredible people. Those are incredible patriots. Plus, the future of the Republican Party after a week of awkward silence amid a racial firestorm, where do rank and file republicans go from here. And dramatic new video, iran says its commando seized a British Oil Tanker over the latest flashpoint in the persian gulf. Well go live to tehran for the latest. And well tell you what the secretary of state mike pompeo is saying now. A political crisis in puerto rico, mass demonstrations calling for the governor to resign. Ill talk to a journalist on the ground in san juan about the situation. We begin right here at high noon on the west coast, 3 00 here in the east, with President Trump lashing out on twitter, even as he hits the links at his private gulf club in new jersey. Hes defending himself against what many are considering racist chants. In a new tweet today, hes insisting he did nothing to lead people on after people started chanting, send her back at the rally. It all comes after his about face for praising the crowd. Calling them unamerican less than an hour ago. Aoc hit back. Once you start telling american citizens to go back to your own countries. This tells you that this president s policies are not about immigration, its about ethnicity and racism. In his biggest mistake is that he said the quiet part loud. Joining us, Natasha Alfred and white house cabinet secretary. Welcome to all of you any idea what was behind trumps attack on the squad. Theres nothing called for this. Im from georgia, a senator was told at a Grocery Store she should come back to where she came from. This clearly does not represent where people can actually live up to their best angels by having government regulation taken away. When i look at this, it doesnt represent what the party used to be. You had a big event as you mentioned, that was planned right here in new york city, where you were going to have a lot of speakers, including Stacey Abrams who has been a woman who has been attacked by the right over the years. Any sense what the message would have been coming out of that festival today. It was cancelled due to weather . I think we would have had people like tascy abrams there. Its not american to criticize citizens and tell them to go back to where they came from, when where they came from is right here. Many leaders have been weighing in on this throughout the last week. Including angela merkel. Heres a look. The comments made were hurtful, wrong, and completely unacceptable. And i want everyone in canada to know that those comments are completely unacceptable and should not be allowed or encouraged. Angela merkel saying, what more do you need, yes. Can you imagine big western leaders saying the sort of stuff our president did in the last week . I cant imagine it without consequences, but its funny that we have leaders outside of the country who have the moral leadership to condemn these comments right away. We have political leaders still dancing around the phrase, acting as if they didnt know there was some sort of racial aspect to the comments. I think its sad, its disheartening, and it speaks to the way people have prized politics above morality above actual values in this country. I think we over simplify race often. And unless theres a kkk robe, burning cross that somehow racism is not happening you can ask any africanamerican, we know that racism often comes in the form of coded language. People wont say how they really feel. Theyre going to let you know youre not want ed. Trumps words have ramifications. These words are being echoed in the brexit movement, words like this were being used, i could totally see in the u. K. And india, these words being used against people. These are words being used in brazil. We need to get you in on this conversation, chris, former first lady, Michelle Obama also weighed in, tweeting what truly makes our country great is its diversity. Ive seen that beauty in so many ways, whether we are born here or seek refuge here. Theres a place for us all, she continues, its our america. There are a lot of people who have 1been fairly silent about this, democrats need to hear a strong voice to talk about this sort of stuff. What do you make of that. As you well know. Michelle obama has stayed out of politics over the last 2 1 2 years it certainly must have reached a point at which she felt she could not speak any longer. To those who are calling for president obama to speak out, i wonder this, why is it always the role of the Democratic Party to save our country to restore democratic norms . I think back on the resolution that was voted on in the house this week. Only four republicans dared to stand up to the president s racist tweets. Two of them are represent iing pretty heavy area, what you see from the rest of the caucus is a lot of mele mouthed justifications or kind of explanations. Many of them, i didnt have a chance to hear this, what this president is doing is normalizing conduct that would be disciplined if you did it in the workplace, if your child did it in the school yard. And we continue to go with this day by day to new lows in this country. Whatever you think of it, the silence has been deafening, hasnt it, from the Republican Party, hasnt it . It absolutely has, and youve seen a couple people who have spoken out about it, but theyve spoken out much too late and much too softly, this is a moment where it doesnt matter what your race is, or what your National Origin, its about what it means to be an american, in america, we dont have rights for certain people in this country. Everyone has the same level of rights, and one of those important rights is the right of dissent. Do you feel were at a Tipping Point in this country . Absolutely. Were past the Tipping Point when it comes to Race Relations and beyond . Yes, i think this is anner 00 in which people are drawing a line in the sabd and theyre saying, youre either going to speak up and stand up for americans in this moment or youre going to be silent and be counted as one of those in history who went neutral and said that this didnt matter. When is the last time you think we had a moment like this . The last time is charlottesville, when the president said there are very fine people. Not condemning what took place in a way we would expect. I spoke with folks on the ground, in minnesota, from the Somali American Community who were saying that they have been told to go back to their country before. To hear this sentiment from the president , who represents hope in america or is supposed to, thats disheartening. Thank you. Really sorry, your concert and event got cancelled. Its going to feel like 110 degrees outside. Weathers a little bit better in new york. Thank you, guys, appreciate it. Lets turn to the showdown with iran. Just within the last couple hours. Iran released this dramatic video, claiming to show its commandos hijacking a British Oil Tanker in the gulf of hormuz. They were propelling from helicopters on to the vessel. Several smaller boats could be seen nearby. Tehran bureau chief, ali arouzi on the ground in iran. I know the secretary of state mike pompeo just spoke about the tension with iran moments ago, what are we hearing. Well, the two sides couldnt be further apart on their positions. Mike pompeo is saying that iran is showing no signs of changing its dehav yore, even though america is saying theyre willing to go back to the negotiating table. Iran doesnt want to change its behavior, they feel like theyre under maximum pressure from the u. S. , this is the only response they can give to be bridge ran the to be aggressive, because they see this crisis as completely made in the usa, because they said theyd adhere to the deal. Lets listen to what secretary pompeo said, and we can discuss it on the other side. In the end the Iranian Regime has to make a decision that it wants to behav like a normal nation. If they do that, were prepared to negotiate across a broad spectrum. I hope they will do that, weve done everything we can to create the space for this, to continue to take actions that are deterrents and deescalations, so we can have this opportunity. But today we have seen no indications that the iranians are fundamentally prepared to change the direction of their nation. And thats exactly the point, kendis, iran doesnt want to change his behavior, because they feel theyre under pressure, and theyre saying that its not true what secretary pompeo says, the iranians saying there are preconditions that are being put on already. By the United States pulling out of the nuclear deal, and the 12 pints that secretary pompeo had put across for iran to adhere to. These are all preconditions, the United States wants iran to adhere by these things, otherwise in negotiations, if they ever did happen, wouldnt go anywhere, so iran is saying that we will talk only on the terms of the nuclear deal, and the reality is theyre not going to change their behavior in the region. They see this as geo political, they see their influence in syria and beyond as paramount to their own power. I dont think much is going to change here. So many people are hoping some things will change, at 4r50e69 for the tensions to die down a little bit between the u. S. As well as iran. Up next, we know where the president stands, but what about the rest of the republicans, the response has been tepid at best this week, how the party can address its problems on race. But Still Holding the lead with senators, Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren who are tied in second place. Sanders among the candidates at Council Bluffs iowa this afternoon for a series of events. Our own mike memmeli joins us live. You mentioned that joe biden took a hit after that last debate. One of the things we saw at the start of this week was joe biden really leading into that contrast between him and senator sanders on the issue of health care. Joe biden selling his vision for improving upon the Affordable Care act. Reminding voters how hard that was to pass in the first place, and talking about ways in which he would seem to improve upon it. At the same time bernien sadders is behind me saying, bernien sadders not only is the price tag much higher, it would cost in the trillions versus his, which is 750 billion. It would end private insurance as we know it. Bernie sanders is welcoming that contrast with joe biden. He was talking about his vision for medicare for all. Despite something he fought for himself, he had tens of millions of people uninsured or underinsured under the Affordable Care act. At the end of the day, we say this one last time, the United States must join every other major country on earth, and guarantee health care to all people as a right. And if people tell you we cant afford it, you tell them that medicare for all will cost less as a nation than the current dysfunctional system. Bernie sanders selling this himself. Hes unveiling his plan for senior issues. Is he going to be expanding Social Security by raising the cap on income taxing. Not all americans, just up to 139 a year. Mike memoli. Joining us. Talking about medicare for all, as well. As the democrats duke it out on the campaign trail the New York Times is reporting that the electoral edge could grow in 2020. Joining me now to break this down are republican strategists joe watkins and amy tarkanian. You swapped coasts with joe biden whos out there now. Hes doing more fundraising than he has been meeting the people . He is meeting the people out there, from what i understand. They are very happy with him out there, i also know he cant get too comfortable. You have cory booker who has family members out there and Kamala Harris who frequents there and has quite the base growing. Nevada is one of the early voting states. The New York Times is predicting that even if trump loses the popular vote, he could genuine the Electoral College. In fact, i was in New Hampshire talking with some of the local congress ap leaders just last week, they were saying theyre predicting 5 loss in the popular vote. Still victory for trump. What do you make of that. Its possible the president could win the Electoral College and solidify the gains that he made in the last cycle. The 2016 cycle. Anything that divides us, makes the party about race hurts us. I joined the Republican Party because it was the party of lincoln way back when it was the party Lyndon Johnson could count on for the Voting Rights, fair housing. This is the party i joined, one that leveled the Playing Field for everybody, especially the people of color the tweets that targeted four women of color that elected members of congress, who have the right to dissent, the right to speak their mind. And to target them on the basis of color or National Origin i thought was very unfair and bad for the party goingforward. You mentioned. I do not believe that the president s tweets were racist. I do believe they were not well thought out. He needs that extra, are you sure button on twit ter. Has he said that to a white person . What do you mean . He did not say to those four women, he did not base his tweet based on their color. It was based on my mothers an immigrant and my mother is an immigrant. Clearly it was no. I would be angry if someone said to my mother, go back to where you came from. Oh, its very offensive. He didnt say, because you are this color, go back to where you came from. The fact that we have undocumented one woman, one freshman congresswoman who was perhaps white. Im not supporting that tweet, was it racist . No. Was it stupid, yes. The tweet was racist. I dont think he would say it to somebody who was white from another country. Thats why it hurts us. Antisemitic comments, thats where they came from. It was not well thought out. You cannot support that. A rational person cannot support that. Let me ask you this. What is a racist comment . What would you say . Im not going to make a racist comment, are you crazy . Define what is a racist comment . Okay, i am not going to go down that direction at all. Thats not where the Republican Party is headed in any means, i do agree with anything positive that came out of your other guests mouth. But was this racist . It was absolutely not racist. I do not agree with the chants that took place at that rally, saying send her back. The chants are repeating what the president said. Yes, okay, but in all fairness, he did disavow that. You cannot control what an entire crowd does. Could he have spoken up in 2 seconds, 3 seconds, 4 seconds . 13 seconds. I get it. Should it have come out at all . No. Any reasonable rational person will tell you that that comment was unacceptable. All right, lets leave it there for that. Over the last two years as you know, we have seen many of the president s dissenters become his defenders, most notely, senator Lindsey Graham. Take a listen. Hes a race baiting, xenophobic big of course. He does not represent my party. I think the president is in a tug of war with his opponents the question is, do i think the president is a racist . No, let me tell you why. If youre a somali refugee and youre wearing a maga hat and youre a trump fan, youd probably be having dinner at the white house. He lashes out at people that are critical of him in his view that are hurting the country. Thats what this is all about. What a difference two years makes. What do you make of that 180 from senator graham. Political expediency for the most part. I think people who are elected and have a political desire and ambition say what they need to say when they need to say it, its much better about being Public Service and personal political service, if they just spoke the truth, they would be okay, they would be consistent. People can change. If someone says something thats racist, its racist, you ought to call it out for what it is. Maybe theyll not do it any more. Whos right, 2017 Lindsay Graham or 2019 Lindsey Graham. Right here in studio . Okay, i think that 2017 Lindsey Graham. Who said trump was a racist . Right. And i dont agree with that statement. I have met back then you would not have no, i have met the president on numerous occasions, i have even been in a house of prayer with the president. Hes not a racist, hes not xenophobic, hes not a religious bigot of any sort. I think at that point in time, we had a war of words, the two of them were not exactly the most kind to each other as far as verbiage goes, and there was a lot of tension. As far as political expediency, yes, there is some of that, absolutely. But we have to get past the noise in order to get things accomplished, correct . I think that now that theyre on the same page, this is a good thing, its a positive thing. People can change. Hopefully the two of them are continuing to move forward in favor of the countrys good interests. Whats changed more, Lindsay Graham in those two years or the president has actually changed. Well, if Lindsey Graham has stuck to his guns, maybe the president would hear that and you wouldnt hear racist tweets. Its unfortunate that people change with the wind based on what they think is most popular. If youre elected to political office, if youre fortunate enough to be elected to political office, do whats right. Say whats right, say whats true, and let the chips fall where they may, and history will bear you out. Lets say this at the end of the day, despite all that has happened and all the backlash, the president s Approval Ratings in the south are up. What does that say about the base of the Republican Party . Well, he just had a Campaign Rally there, so that gets the base energized no matter where its located. I think but the news cycle latedy no, but the economy is doing well, and hes reached out to those hardworking blue collar americans, who in the past hes done well with. I think its just showing that yes americans are pretty happy with where they are as far as economy and jobs go, and he energized the base, and thats actually, hes in his element when he campaigns. All right, well leave it there. Appreciate the conversation. Nice to see you. Good to see you. Straight ahead here, the impeachment debate, Speaker Pelosi and most of her caucus say not yet. House democrats making two big headlines this week, first by voting to kill an attempt to impeach President Trump. And then by voting to hold attorney general bill barr and the commerce secretary wilbur ross in contempt over the census dispute. Joining me now, msnbc analyst katie fang and anita kumar, welcome to you both saturday. Are they concerned about either . Im not sure theyre concerned about either of those things now. Impeachment didnt go far this time. I think what theyre following is whether the democrats, and i think its not whether, but when this is going to happen, when the democrats really go to court and say and ask a federal judge to force some of these people to testify. As you know, the administration, the white house is pretty much asking everyone former officials even to not testify, to not come to congress, and not to give over their talk to them. And so i think at some point democrats are building their case. And theyre going to go to a federal judge and say, we want these people to testify. Believe theyve indicated to these colleagues that don mcgann will be the first person they do that with. Thats what theyre really watching. That could be really important as we go forward. Tell me what being held in contempt means. And if there are any possible consequences for barr and ross . If youre in the courtroom and you get hauled off into the jail cell and you can purge that attempt. When it comes to congress, congress is neutered, when it really comes to contempt proceedings. We know that they have a sergeant at arms that they could go to get somebody and throw them into the Senate Congressional jail. Thats not going to happen, you know what anita says, when you choose the following. If you ever had to have a good test case to go to court, the census is the one. Thats why bill barr and wilbur ross should be nervous. Wilbur ross gave sworn testimony where he lied and said that the purpose for the Citizenship Question on the 2020 census was to basically see better enforcement of the Voting Rights act. Beknow the Supreme Court had said thats false, it was contrived, thats the exact word that Justice Roberts used. Bill barr not giving over the documents that have been so heavily redacted, theyre basically worthless. Which means that now when they go into court, they basically sue bill barr and wilbur ross, theyre going to have some serious problems. They have to own up and tell the truth. I dont care that bill barr is the attorney general. And i dont have a problem with that when i have strong judges that are going to hold them accountable. If there ever was a case, anita was right that this is the case that should go to court over the census question. Lets go for contempt for impeachment. My colleague. Heres what we have to say about the president. If we dont take affirmative action, were only to allow him to continue. If he believes he has no guardrails, he will do whatever he can to win. Its all about winning with him, he doesnt mind using the most insane inane ideology to accomplish it. Youre at the white house on any given day, does that sort of language make the president take pause at all . I think they were prepared for what happened this week, which is, they didnt have the votes, they are looking and seeing all the news reports in the county, and know that while the numbers are going up, i think its 90 or so people in the house that are supportive, that they dont nearly have the numbers yet. Theyre not anywhere close. They need more than double that. They dont have the numbers, you heard the president sort of mock it the other day, calling it, just what the congressman said, it was a game. They dont have these numbers, theyre just kind of doing this, i dont think theyre worried about that at this particular point. I think they could be later, depending on how some of these other issues play out. Youve heard the speaker over and over say, lets let some of these committees do the rest of this work, so depending on what happens with bob mueller testifying on wednesday and some other committees of what they might come up with, it might get to that point. Really will be an interesting week ahead. Hope youll be back with us. As we watch muellers testimony this week. Still ahead, the crisis in puerto rico, a Corruption Scandal on the island sparking mass protest and growing calls for the governor to step down. Pictures into our headquarters in san juan, demanding the resignation of the governor. Ricardo rosello. Hes using sexist and homophobic slurs as well as mocking victims of hurricane maria. The storm that devastated that island. Many of puerto ricos most famous sons were there. All calling for the governor to resign. Joining me now, from Los Angeles Antonio hilton. I want to start with antonio in san juan, we had the live pictures just moments ago, with the loud protests there, werent streets of old san juan, it appears to be no let up to these protests. Its true, every single day, every hour, theres someone outside of the Governors Mansion playing music, dancing, banging pots and pans and calling for him to step down. The governor says hes remorseful, but he will not resign, what do you make of all thats transpired there within the last few weeks . The fact that hes made fun of all the deaths that happened there, in puerto rico, the catastrophe there was during maria and after maria. It shows hes an inept leader. Are you finding that your voice, and we saw ricky martin as well there, and many of the famous Puerto Ricans who have been speaking out in the last couple weeks, is it making any difference at all . Well, i think that the people coming out and using their voice is huge. Ricky is acting like a nino as we say in puerto rico, he has to go, and he has to be held accountable for his action and lack of inaction. And should point the ricky youre referring to is the governor, not necessarily ricky martin or the others who have been out there on the streets. This all goes back to some tweets. Some messages take us back to what this uproar is all about. I believe hundreds of messages that were shared between the governor and many people who are part of the administration there in puerto rico. A local center released almost 900 page pages of chat messages. Theyre really more like the straw thats broken the camels back here. The messages have sexist comments, homophobic remarks about ricky martin, theyre making fun of political opponents. And its not just cabinet members or people who work for the governor, but associates of his who many people here in puerto rico feel it was inappropriate to have them there, to have Sensitive Conversations about public affairs. Everyone in puerto rico has dealt with slow recovery after this hurricane, they have struggled through austerity measures that many people feel have strangled the island in many ways. And these comments are the icing on top of the cake, and they make people feel really awful. It is a vulnerable time for your people. There are many people on the island who are say iing yes the want the governor to go, but there have been years and years of scandal within the puerto rican government that it wouldnt necessarily make a difference there. Whats needed in puerto rico is a whole new political system. The two parties that have dominated the governorship have proven to be corrupted, they dont have a vision, they dont have a vision for puerto rico for the children of puerto rico. I mean, the only thing that the governor does is have a referendum on statehood. That is not progress, progress is solar farms, wind mills, developing better education for our children in puerto rico. And to get rid of all those corruptible politicians. We have to start fresh. As you know, weve had this debate in the United States other parts of the states in the last week. Over whether the president s comments were racist. Or the president is a racist. Based on the tweets that, the messages that you saw for the governor of puerto rico, what would you brand him . Hes a racist. An outright racist, a bigot. I mean, he put it out there.
