Trump and kim pledged to turn that friendship into substance by restarting Nuclear Talks. Plus, defending Kamala Harris. Fellow democrats show their support after a familiar and very ugly attack on her race surfaces on social media. And the border battle. 2020 Democratic Candidates visiting Detention Centers across the country as the Supreme Court sets a date to weigh in on the immigration debate. We begin this afternoon with a historic first step for President Trump. He is now the first sitting u. S. President to step foot into north korea by crossing the demilitarized zone. The unprecedented crossing was soon followed by a 50 minute private meeting. Both sides agreed to restart Nuclear Talks. But not everyone was onboard with the optics of the facetoface meeting. Back here at home, reaction for the president was less congratulatory from several 2020 Democratic Candidates. I have no problem with him sitting down with kim jongun in north korea or any place else. But i dont want it simply to be a photo opportunity. You just cant look at this as going over and talking to your dictator next door and bringing them a hot dish over the fence. It seems like it is all for show. It is not substantive. Lets go to seoul, south korea where hans has the latest. All of this started with a tweet from President Trump. Tell us more about the meeting. Did it exceed those initial expectations . Reporter it might have. It certainly did in terms of time, morgan. Youre right. It started with a tweet that set off this course of events and it ended with a tweet when the president was leaving here on air force one before he refueled talking about the wonderful meeting he had. In between, he gave marching orders saying he wants to have working level meetings to try to get these negotiations back on track. The president also appeared, and i stress appeared, to give a little bit of ground on this sequencing of what the lifting of sanctions would look like. He said sanctions are still in place, but they could be lifted during the negotiations. Thats a potential possibility. That marks a shift from President Trump. One thing that is clear in all of this is that the president , even though he only has 18 months left in his first term, it is clear hes not feeling forced by the clock. The meeting was a very good one. Very strong. Very solid. Great relationship. And well see what can happen. We want to get it right. We dont want to were not looking for speed. Were looking to get it right. And in the meantime, there has been nuclear tests, no Ballistic Missiles. Theres been a lot of good will. And there continues to be, maybe if anything better. I think maybe after today better than it was even before. Reporter so thats a president who trusts his ability to cut deals on a one to one basis. He really has a lot of confidence in his personal ability to conduct diplomacy. Just a little bit on the back and forth. Remember the president sent that tweet out two days ago. Kim jongun did say that the first he learned about a potential visit by trump, maybe not a potential visit, but the prospects of a meeting, came through that tweet. It was a remarkable day. It was a messy day. It was chaotic, but ultimately President Trump spent about a minute in north korea, walked back and then they had about a 50 minute meeting where it appears that negotiations, if theyre not back on track, theyre starting again. And there is a prospect of a third summit and potentially an invite for kim jongun to the white house. Morgan . Lets talk about another player there, though because mike pompeo also traveled with the president. Whats his strategy with north korea . Reporter yeah. Undertake the president s mission, his orders, his mission. The challenge is he has been rejected by north korea in the past. Remember, it was a couple months ago when he was traveling to north korea with a message from trump. And kim jongun didnt even meet with him. Now theyre all in the same room, and the president is saying, this is my guy. I want you to work this out. There is a little bit of tension from the president in saying he wants his deputies to come up with something in two to three weeks while at the same time saying he doesnt feel the pressure of the clock and he wants to get this right, not necessarily fast. Its a little difficult to have a two to three week soft deadline and also at the same time insist that you have all the time in the world. Morgan . Timing is definitely right now of the essence. Joining us live from seoul. Thanks so much. Lets bring in our panel now. Daily beast columnist and white house columnist. Nile, lets start with you. You have heard president ial candidates and congressional members say that this historic moment was just another photo op. Was that true or false . I think thats true, to be perfectly honest. I think what were seeing here is President Trumps desire for tv footage and imagery over substance. Its not really about taking ten steps into north korea. It is about taking the concrete steps in negotiations that might actually lead somewhere. And i think, just to be brief, morgan, this is also complicated by the language he uses when he talks in the tweet you displayed about this being a great honor. A great honor for an american president to enter a very repressive country at the behest of the person doing the repressing . That doesnt seem an honorable thing for an american president. No other american president has seen it in those terms. All that mix complicates the president s desire to claim this as some kind of victory. You talk about the concrete steps. What about those concrete steps . Does this give kim jongun more legitimacy . It certainly does. So first of all, President Trump goes to north korea before kim jongun comes to the u. S. North korean media is going to say that north korea is the strongest nation on earth, something they have maintained for decades because, look, donald trump comes. Remember, the chinese president forced kim to come to chinese soil four times in a row starting last march before he could go to north korea. Thats an indication the chinese view the North Koreans as vasils. Order of travel very, very important. So this is a real win for kim to say, look, trump is here. And, gordon, i would like to take a listen to something that President Trump said about sanctions against north korea. Take a listen to this. Theyre staying on. At some point, look, im looking forward to taking them off. I dont like sanctions being on his country. Im looking forward. But the sanctions remain, yes. But at some point during the negotiations, things can happen. And thats what well be talking about sanctions. So now what about other countries who have experienced sanctions and they have participated in those sanctions against the regime. How do they view this move . I think the idea of sanctions against north korea is obviously a does have International Support for the most part. Now, thats different when we get into countries that are in some way aligned with north korea. But really the president here has a tendency to throw away his cards before hes actually played his hand. As gordon mentioned, i mean, we have got the president going into north korea. We now have him talking about that being an honor. We now have him wanting to remove sanctions or holding out the possibility of sanctions being removed. What has he got in return for these kind of nice noises toward mr. Kim . He doesnt seem, to me, to have got very much at all. And these nice noises, as you described them, are also happening at the height of our election season. Lets talk about the other camp here. Vice president bidens Team Released a statement about the trip. He said President Trumps calling of dictators at the expense of American National security and interests is one of the most dangerous ways hes diminishing us on the world stage and subverting our values as a nation. Gordon, how do you feel about that . I agree with Vice President biden. But you guilty to remember, though, this has we have crossed this line a very long time ago with china, which is a far more dangerous adversary for the United States, which is actually more dedicated to subverting our society than north korea is. And, so, you know, there is a real issue here about the way we interact with hard line regimes. And in that category x you have got to throw russia. So, yes, the Vice President is right. But this is an issue that goes through American Foreign policy and not just trump goes back administration after administration. Final thought to you, nile. Lets talk for a moment about expectations. Do you think kim jongun would ever really give up Nuclear Weapons . I dont think so because arent they the main thing that protects him or continues enables him to continue in power . I dont see what his incentive would be to give up Nuclear Weapons. I think there is a danger here that the president hypes up expectations too much. Look, donald trump hasnt changed that much in 10, 20 years. Hes always been a hype man. Hes always been promising something momentus whether or not the thing behind that is momentous or puny. He keeps talking about it as a historic breakthrow in waiting. I dont see there is any evidence to support that. Thank you so much for being with us this afternoon. And still ahead, they have seen this before. Kamala harris facing a social media attack over her race and nationality. It has many in her party wondering if birtherism is back. In september 2016, then candidate donald trump finally admitted that former president obama was born in the United States. But before that, he spent five years promoting a conspiracy theory. Fast forward now to eight years later. His own son is reviving those outrageous birther comments. This time taking aim at senator Kamala Harris. Don jr. Retweeting that Kamala Harris is not an american. But instead, half indian and half jamaican. The younger trump has since deleted his tweet saying people were misconstruing his tweet. Senator harris is now marching in her hometowns annual pride parade. How is her camp responding to this online attack . Reporter yeah. Its been quite a 48 hours since that debate and since that tweet started going around. Don jr. Retweeted it before deleting that tweet. A spokeswoman for Kamala Harris, the president ial candidate, put out a statement saying, quote, this is the same type of racist attacks used to attack barack obama. It didnt work then it wont work now. They all put out tweets condemning these types of suggestions. Of course Kamala Harris was born just across the bay here over in oakland. As i said, its been a big 48 hours since her thursday night delate performance. Her campaign announcing they raised 2 million in just the 24 hours after appearing on that stage in miami. Of course, were now in the middle of San Francisco going down market street. He used to be the District Attorney here, used to be the attorney general and of course a just senator. We will ask Kamala Harris here as shes going along this parade route here hi, senator. Hi. What is the significance of pride for you . Why be here . Oh. For years and years to celebrate the fight for equality, for the diversity, for inclusion. This is about fighting for civil rights. It is about celebrating the accomplishments that we have achieved but also knowing we have work ahead. Compared to your could be republican rival, what is the significance of your presence . Well, i mean, this is a town that gave birth in many ways to the movement for lbgtq equality. And we have a current occupant of the white house who has been silent on so many issues that have included an increase in hate crime, a policy that has been about excluding and kicking out transgender men and women from the military who have dedicated a life of service to fight or our and defend our democracy. You could go on and on. So i think this is a moment where everyone knows we want to have championships f for equall our country and we dont currently have that in the white house. Have the pride. Have the pride. Morgan, we will talk to the senator about some of the other issues around this Campaign Later this afternoon. She will be speaking over at San Francisco city hall at the conclusion of this parade. Happy pride, happy progress. Thanks so much for joining us live from San Francisco. For more, lets bring in former Obama Administration official, former chief of staff to republican senator mike lee and former white house senior director and former Staff DepartmentSenior Adviser in the Obama Administration. Jake, lets start with you. Obama faced similar attacks from trump beginning in 2011. How has harriss campaign now handling that compared to what you all dealt with back then . Well, i think now we sort of have the benefit of having seen this one before. To illustrate the choice facing people in this election, we spent the last week talking about which democrat was best on matters of race and civil rights and don jr. Pops up to remind us his family has been demonizing black and brown people for the last 50 years. We first heard about donald trump back in 1973 when he was denying apartments to black people. He used to be a letter c on their applications for colored. He took a full page ad innocent the central part five and went around saying the first black president was not born in this country. This president won two terms, including the popular vote twice. This is reheated racism. You talk about this reheated racism and demonizing black and brown people. Boyd, what about you . Are there any consequences . Could republicans face any negative ramifications for don jr. s since deleted tweet . I think the most important thing is that we have to get past this culture of contempt across the board. So this tweet by don jr. Certainly is not helpful to anybody. And i dont care about party, left, right, center or anything in between. This is about a culture of contempt in this country where it makes it okay to make these kinds of statements. That contempt where you believe in the worthlessness of another individual because thats what allows you to say whatever you want to them about twitter or blow up their facebook feed. We have to get beyond that because the greatness of this country is that oneness is not sameness. I dont care what party it is. Both parties need to get focussed on the issues that really matter to those people because we are not nearly as divided as a nation as, i think, many of our people on both sides of the aisle in washington want us to believe. Thats what keeps them in power and in control. Its what allows them to raise millions and millions of dollars in campaigns. We all have to get beyond a wedge issue and get to the bridge issues that actually will solve the problems for the American People. You call it a culture of contempt, but i wonder if its a culture of complacency . Are we doing enough and the right things when we see matters of disinformation . There was a tweet about that false claim of harriss nationality. Buzzfeed reported his post was copied word for word and tweeted by a network of bot accounts. We have not confirmed this report. But if this is true, could the culprits face any legal implications . Here is what we do know, and this is based on the 2016 election and the assessment of 17 intelligence agencies that russia intervened in our election in very particular ways, by trying to use bots and fake accounts and fake narratives online, facebook, social media, twitter, to promote the divisions that already exist in our society. Whether that was black lives matter or other antihillary, were starting to see that as the next generation of this Birther Movement that started with donald trump in 2008. Now back then in 2008 in the primaries, we did have an obama campaign. An opponent in john mccain and mitt romney then who did not stoop to that level themselves. The fact you have russian interests and Donald Trumps interests as leader of the Republican Party right now aligning is very concerning. They are playing to the deepest, most ugliest parts of american society, so it pays to be vigilant, not only about what were seeing and reading online but also about what that means and the intentionality behind it and the intention is clearly not just to sew division among americans but to create an identity of america that is you have to be white. You have to have been here for several generations and nothing else would matter if you are of the trumpian mindset. Hold on. Speaking of mention, though, werent we warned about this before . I mean, jake, this is the type of Online Disinformation Campaign that Robert Mueller warned americans about. If the Trump Administration doesnt address this National Security issue, what political implications could republicans face . Yeah. They have said over and other again theyre not addressing it. Donald trump spent a good part of two years trying to deny there was any influence from russia at all. So well see what republicans will do about this. My gut sense right now is that they will do nothing. Which is why this isnt a both sides problem and we cant look at it like a both sides problem. We do need to be vigilant. I think thats exactly right. And i think we need to call this stuff out when we see it and then turn to don j, turn to donald trump, turn to members of the Republican Party and say, you better condemn this because it is nonsense, racist and garbage and you need to say so. You mentioned im sorry. Go ahead. Well, the people who are benefitting from this kind of talk frankly right now are the Republican Party. They recognize that the black population, that millennials are going to outnumber aging boomers in the voting public at large. They are intentionally looking to roll back Voting Rights in key states, to effectively in places like florida reinstituting a poll tax to be able to go vote. They benefit when the black vote, minority votes and democrat votes in general are suppressed. So this is part of their campaign of how they would win. I want to go back to something that jake mentioned. He talked about calling it out when you see it. Boyd, in the meantime, what should democrats be doing . Is calling it out enough . We have seen multiple 2020 candidates, they have all rushed to harriss defense. But, you know, is that support enough . Is there anything democrats should be doing to more broadly fight these disinformation campaigns . Bar be it for me to give the democrats advice on what they should be doing. But i do think calling it out is obviously the right thing and everybody should call it out. Across the board everyone should call it out for what it is, and it is unamerican. They need to make sure they dont become a party of grievance because there is a positive message there. The people who watched the debates over the two nights saw you had some very talented people talking about policy for a change, which was a good thing. I think they want to make sure they dont get mired down in what they are against because ultimately the American People want to know what are you for . What is your vision besides a vision of being in office and in power . What is your vision for the future of the country . And, so, if anything advice i would give there is to, yes, call it out, acknowledge it and move it forward. But then whats the positive vision . How do you move it forward from here . When you say they should be wary of becoming the party of grievance, how do you tow that line . Youre right. Youve got to call it out for what it is. But then its always, okay, were going to deal with this and not but, and. Were going to deal with the racism and whether thats discrimination of any kind, whether thats against the lbgtq community, whether thats religious communities. Weve seen shootings in mosques, jewish temples. But saw how communities were coming together, calling out the hate and the people for what had happened but then moving forward that, hey, we can come together on a host of issues in this country, all of the issues in this country because thats what makes it uniquely american. It is sad to see this type of hate is trying to find its way into the main stream of our american political discourse. Thank you so much for joining us. Please stick around. Up next, the fight over immigration is quickly becoming a key issue in the democratic primary with Detention Centers now at the center of that debate. Well take a look at the legal battle thats going on behind the scenes. Stay with us. Shaving has been difficult for me i have very sensitive skin, and i get ingrowing hairs just stopping that irritation. That burn that i get. The ability to clean and take care of themselves, an attorney was able to visit inside said there is a scene of fillth and sickness right here in the wealthiest, the most powerful country on the face of the planet. This is how we treat the least of us right now. Thats 2020 president ial candidate beto orourke in clint, texas today describing the dire conditions of the Border Patrol facility. Several other candidates visited a facility in florida where 2,700 children are being held. Joining me now former federal prosecutor and msnbc contributor, professor at the university of texas and a border reporter for the all journal. Why is there so Little Information about whats actually going on inside of these facilitiefacilities . It is hard to fathom that the u. S. Government, the administration would not let people see whats going on inside these sort of detention facilities for children. You know, i was a prosecutor for 30 years, first in the u. S. Army and then as an assistant u. S. Attorney with the federal government. I have been to countless facilities, both local, federal, military, both pretrial detention facilities and prison ns where we house inmates after they are convicted of crimes. I have never once seen a facility completely block people from entering to visit people, visit their loved one, their Family Members, their clients. And it does conjure up the sort of worst of the worst when you are wondering what the administration is doing to and with these children inside those facilities. I think they would be smart to shine a light on whats going on in there. Right. So people can see for themselves how these refugees, how these immigrant children are being treated. And, glen, you talk about how these children are being treated. What about the legality of this . The Homestead Center is a for profit facility and the clint, Texas Detention Center is a Border Patrol government facility. How does that distinction affect the Legal Process . Does it determine the course of action that can actually be taken to see whats happening inside . So many laws are being broken here, morgan. Let me give a big picture here in terms of we know that in terms of the law, children can only be held in Border Patrol facilities such as the clint facility for no more than three days. However, we have been seeing over the past couple of months, kids being held in those Border Patrol facilities that are designed for shortterm detention and also for grown men. Number one, we see a flagrant violation there. When children do get moved to Detention Centers that are supposedly for them to be a little longer period of time, it is supposed to be for the minimal amount of time necessary to reunite them with, say, a Family Member because of the longterm effects that detention incarceration can have on these children. And in addition to that, that there are certain standards that have to be met. And this was laid out in the 1997 settlement. So aside from being able to brush your teeth, take a shower, there are also health standards, educational standards. None of this is being met, morgan. Angela, i want to go to you and i want to go what we just saw when we heard beto speaking. He went to visit is migrant families that have been turned away. You wrote an article about how the Mexican National guard is patrolling the border in well traveled area. How are they trying to deter those migrants before actually reaching u. S. Soil . Well, morgan, in all my years of covering the border, i never thought i would see this. These are people, immigrant families, trying to sneak out of mexico to evade the National Guard, mexicos National Guard to get to the u. S. Where they are waiting for Border Patrol to come and make them up and make an asylum claim. They are going up and down the border. There is a heavy military presence. These are active duty mexican military soldiers. Mexicos president is in the midst of creating a National Guard. That was supposed to be a force to deal with organized crime. But now hes still trying to ramp up that force and instead is using soldiers to stop mothers and children. We have seen some videos, some photos of the National Guard chasing down families before they can reach the u. S. Side. Sometimes the families are falling. These are mothers carrying little children. So they seem to be having an Immediate Impact of slowing the flow at least for now. But as we have seen in the past, people look for other ways to go across and they will go into more remote areas that pose a bigger danger for drowning and now with the heat in triple digits, that will be another serious issue. Glen, lets talk about the administrations strategy on this side of the border. In addition to denying asylum to central americans, President Trump also announced that more deportations would start soon. Take a listen to this. We will be removing large numbers of people. People have to understand, yes, the laws are in a week . Yeah. Starting in a week after, you know, some time after july 4th. So, glen, he previously called off a round of ice raids this week. What is his strategy here . You know, there really is no strategy. There is no coherent policy that this administration has to deal with immigrants and with the crisis that were seeing presently. The only way you can sum up, i think, the administrations approach to immigration is they are antiimmigrant. Whether it is revoking the daca status, deferred action for childhood arrivals, socalled dreamers. The president tried to revoke that. The courts put a stop to it. Of course well now see what the Supreme Court does when it takes up review of that case. Or whether it is denying Asylum Seekers the right to actually present themselves and have an interview to see whether they had a credible fear. You know, i couldnt help but see the irony of President Trump himself just sort of casually walking across a border from north to south korea without obviously going through any of the procedures, getting the proper visa, the proper paperwork to cross a border. One can only wonder once he set foot in north korea, was he an illegal as he would put it . That is a bit of a light hearted view of whats going on here, but it is clear this administration thinks if you are a person of privilege you can do what you want with impunity. And if you are not, if you are a person of color, if you are an immigrant trying to come here for a better life, were going to throw you in facilities even if you are a child and were not going to let anybody see the conditions that we are subjecting you to. Id like angela to jump in here because the candidates are flocking to this homestead facility. The l. A. Times says the complex is a symbol of some of President Trumps harsher immigration policies that have been by voters. It offers a rallies point against trump without getting into a conversation within the Democratic Party about their alternative vision for immigration and border security. Are democrats, angela, going to need to reconcile their own different visions for immigration to really take on the president . Well, one benefit of all of this is we have seen more members of congress coming down here. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus will be here touring the flint facility thatscontrovers. We have serious conditions for children, but we also have deteriorating conditions for those family under the remain in mexico policy, being sent back by the thousands, children and parents, and being stuck in Mexican Border cities where some of these cities have a rising drug violence rate and murder rate and ive talked to people who say that they are fearing for their lives. Their court dates are months away, and they dont know how they will make ends meet, much less stay safe. Look at those policies where were farming out our immigration policies to mexico and also the asylum system. We hear the rallying call at the trump rallies for more build that wall, build that wall. We really should be saying is hire more judges because that would have an Immediate Impact to determine who really does qualify for asylum and allow those people to stay in the country and those who dont to be sent back home safely in a timely manner, and we really dont hear much about that. Thank you so much for joining us this afternoon. Its been a pleasure to have you and to learn from each of you. Still ahead, the generation gap. Biden was right when he said it was time to pass the torch to a new generation of americans 32 years ago. Im Still Holding on to that torch. The youth vote will be crucial for democrats in 2020. But with more than two becausen candidates to choose from, who will they support . Joining me now kate martel, gop strategist and democratic strategist and former Obama Administration official. Jake, lets start with you. Lets talk issues for a minute. What do you think is going to be the Biggest Issue for this Younger Voting block . Well, i think certainly you dont have to be young to attract young voters. Saw that with Bernie Sanders in 2016. You do have to speak to the issues that young people care about, climate change, student debt. Were talking about issues that will have a shelf life of longer than the next four years. This is a generation thats going to have to live with the consequences of the next four years of policy in this country for a long time. So really what were dealing with is longterm issues that have a real significant shelf life. Which is interesting because age really was where a lot of these sooing zingers came from debate stage. Joe biden was right when he said it was time to pass the torch to a new generation of americans 32 years ago. Im Still Holding on to that torch. I want to make it clear to you. When i get to the current age of the current president in the year 2055, i want to be able to look back on these years and say my generation delivered climate solutions, racial equality and an end to endless war. Help me deliver that new generation to washington before its too late. It doesnt matter if you are old, you are young, black, white, woman, man. You have to take a hard look at the candidates and what they stand for. I think we all kind of clutched our pearls talking about passing the torch. It was clear that age was an issue for the candidates. But the question is do you think age is going to be an issue for the voters . Thats an interesting point, morgan. It was a pretty awkward moment during the debate. Yes, i do think age is an interesting point that thats what young voter wills be looking at. But the front runners are joe biden and Bernie Sanders, not the youngest candidates running now. We did see a drop for biden after the delate. He dropped about ten points in the poll that i saw. He is still the front runner. Kamala harris had a strong debate. She is solidly in third tied with elizabeth warren. It is just coming down to electability i think is the Biggest Issue that democratic voters are worried about, namely p these Younger Voters. Two out of three Younger Voters show that they think the country is on the wrong track. So electability is this big issue right now. So i dont think that democratic voters, young or old, are tieing to get too worked up on the individual issues. I think theyre trying to bring it back to who can really take on President Trump and President Trump has effectively made biden the front runner so far. So he is right now, while he did have a big flop the other day, he is right now still the candidate to beat. It is interesting you bring those numbers, kate, because in a recent morning poll, biden leads with voters over the age of 45, compared to sanders in 12 . Under 45, sanders leads biden by three points. Matt, what do you make of that split . Why do you think were seeing those numbers fall the way they are . Thats a good point. Thats a good question. Younger voters the big question about 2020 is the younger vote, which is generally considered 30 and under, is that going to turn out to the same extent in 2020 . President trumps support among Younger Voters is the worst amongst any age group. That said, i think the question is going to be what motivates Younger Voters . I think the Trump Administration has two good arguments to make to Younger Voters. Number one is the economy, wages rising, Economic Growth solid. These are all good things. We have more job openings and people seeking jobs. But second is the argument of criminal justice reform, which the president can really make an argument to younger hispanics and younger africanamerican voters. Wait. I have to interrupt you there for a minute, matt. Why can he make that argument . Because he got it done and obama didnt get it done. There is just no other argument to make on that. What do you think what do you think that he did specifically . Well, i mean, sure. Go ahead. Look, sure, the administration partnered with the democrats. They did it in a bipartisan way. They got it moving. Jared kushner was involved, ivanka trump was involved. They were able to get it moving. There was bipartisan agreement to do something in the obama years. It just didnt get done. It did get done during the trump years. But the question will be what the turnout level is among young voters. If it is the kmie, if it is free stuff which is like college debt being erased and Free Health Care and free everything, if thats what motivates them, then the democratic candidate will want to benefit. I want to go back to what you said, especially about this notion of Prison Reform because i think thats pretty important. The Obama Administration did make incredible headway in that department. Id love to respond to that. The reason that donald trump was able to get this done as matt says is that Mitch Mcconnell finally let down the drawbridge. The democrats and president obama had been working on this the entire time they were in the office. Mitch mcconnell wouldnt let it go through. When donald trump walked into the office, republicans were sayinsa saying, i guess we can get it done. When we talk about free stuff for young people, the republicans seem awfully fond of free stuff when it means tax cuts for the wealthy without considering the tax cuts for the wealthy. Without considering the consequences and then it comes to doing something for working people in this country, for people who are working hard and who are trying to get ahead suddenly its oh, but the debt, but the debt. But, you know, every millionaire who comes begging for a tax cut suddenly theres cash to be found. I think thats a little bit of hypocrisy here. I want to let matt have the last word because speaking of that, you were talking about trump not having traction with the younger democrat graphic. As a gop strategist, how do you intend to change that . How can it become more attractive to Younger Voters . Its a great question and its a challenging question for our party right now. Look, the older you are, the more likely you are to vote. We have seen that cycle after cycle. 2018 did see more young voters turn out so we dont know if that was a one off or not. I think, you know, the economy and increasing opportunity for young people is where the Republican Party needs to go. Obviously, we have got to make the case that we have been solving addressing and solving major problems. Look, there are two different approaches between the two parties. Theres a bright line contrast. Between the direction that trump is taking the country and the direction that the democrats are proposing so i think we have to make arguments to the voters. If you want the chances to be increased to get a good job, to begin to pay off college debt or buy a house, i would argue that the tax cuts are good for wealthy people and for working people. Reducing every income bracket. It really depended with the income brackets because i think while you saw it of course benefit some members of the wealthier class we did see people who are working class, for example, a lot of truck drivers. They didnt get to count their per diem so its a layered issue and complicate when we think of where the economy and why it is where it is right now. Thank you all so much for joining us. Race and nationality, thats the subject of new attacks on senator Kamala Harris. She was targeted on social media by bots and trolls and even the president s son. It has some democrats saying that the birtherism is alive and well. Plus good to see you again. I never expected to meet you at this place. Crossing the line. The president takes a historic trip to the dmz and north korea. He promises to restart Nuclear Talks with kim jongun. And a story of survival. A 73yearold hiker found alive after a week in the california wilderness. We begin with 2020 democrats uniting behind Kamala Harris and taking aim at the president s eldest son as online conspiracy theorists spread birther style attacks against harris. It continues after her strong debate appearance, and pundits are wondering if she can take back the white house in 2020 harris was claimed was not in fact american black. She is half indian, half jamaican. That was retweeted by donald trump jr. And he since the deleted it and said that folks were misconstruing the intent of the tweet. But her rivals are holding him accountable calling him a racist and slamming the birther style attacks as vile lies. Nbc road warrior von hilliard is following this story in San Francisco, where senator harris is expected to take the stage at the pride parade. We know that you just spoke with her and they compared the racist attacks to the ones used against obama. Are you expecting her to address this when she takes the stage in a few moments . Exactly, morgan. Her spokeswoman says that the attacks didnt work against barack obama. They wont work now against Kamala Harris. Kamala harris, senator from california, is trying to make her way to the stage down over at San Franciscos city hall. If she does not discuss those remarks there, we expect to talk with the senator following those remarks and well ask her that question then. Shes here in San Francisco on pride day. Of course it should be stated that she was born in oakland. Just on the other side of the bay. Born here in the United States. And theres no question that now she is a frontrunner on the democratic side for the democratic nominee. Kamala harris i want to reference shes here at San Francisco pride and making her way a couple of miles down this parade route. We have spoke to her just this last hour about why she was here. She said specifically going up against this Trump Administration in which enabling transgender individual were barred from serving in the military. She said this is not a lgbt Friendly Administration and to note that her history of defending lgbt rights goes back to 2004 and said there are other democrats that were pressing for civil unions at the time and she said that she was over on the steps of city hall marrying individuals when california legalized samesex marriage here in the state. Of course she also chose not to defend proposition 8 which was a california voter approved measure back in 2008 that barred samesex marriages in this state. She said that she looks forward to speaking over at city hall here later this afternoon where well join her and ask her about the broader issues impacting her campaign right now. Morgan . We look forward to hearing more from you leader. Thanks, von hillard. For more, lets bring in political contributor and former congressman david jolly and basil smikle and former assistant, chris lu. What are your thoughts on the recent birther style attacks . When i first read this i was reading a story about the 30th anniversary of do the right thing, spike lee and whats regular black folks and exceptional folks and i cannot stress how dangerous it is for white folks to try to explain to us what blackness is. Its pernicious. It does remind of the birtherism effect of what donald trump tried to do with president obama. I actually disagree a little bit with Kamala Harris spokesperson because i think it had a really detrimental effect on obamas ability to govern and i would caution everyone to be careful because even though donald trump jr. Deleted this i dont think it stops there. The bots, the trollers will continue to perpetuate this online. It will have an impact on how people view Kamala Harris and that i think is going to be a real problem when voters go to the polls if we let this sink in. We should not buy this. We shouldnt go for this. What can one do to make sure it doesnt sink this . This has been a historic thing, navigating the boundaries of blackness and people trying to determine where it stands. When we hear Something Like this about a candidate, what can one do . Well the fact is she is an american citizen and is running for president of the United States and america purported to be a place that you can author your own narrative. That unfortunately doesnt always apply to people of color. But it didnt work for elizabeth warren. Exactly right. To be sure. And so i think as people of color we need to just understand that, you know, when we get to position of power, people will come at us really hard and we need to sort of push back on that. And this is especially true in this 2020 campaign because we have heard africanamerican candidates talk about race in ways that candidates have not done previously. It took even barack obama a long time to really talk about race very openly. So were going to get a lot more of this in the 2020 campaign so we need to be prepared for it. And be okay with it even if it may be uncomfortable for some. We need to be all right with this. You have to be okay with it being a little bit messy. Thats where we can make progress. As long as its respectful i dont think its a problem. Following the strong debate performance, especially with that interaction with joe biden, is she a big threat now . Oh, sure. Look, theres messy as you said but theres also racist. And the candidates are right calling out the don jr. Move as racist. I think theres Fertile Ground within trumps Republican Party for this kind of mischief. And the reason you saw it is because donald trump felt threatened. And consider the reaction of the two people who should feel most threatened after thursday from Kamala Harris. One is joe biden and one is donald trump. Donald trump has yet to weigh in, but he will stoke this. He will say some people are saying or i have heard, his own son as you know amplified it on social media and joe biden who also feels threatened today by Kamala Harris was one of the democrats who came out. And he said this is racist and this is wrong. And people shouldnt say this. And Kamala Harris has my respect. That is the divide right now frankly between the leading republican and a leading democrat and its what the American People need to see coming out of this democratic debate that in fact virtually every voice on that stage i would say every voice on that stage over the course of two nights is defending Kamala Harris against attacks like this. The leading republican is actually fostering it. I think its also a great point and distinction between being messy and being racist. I want to switch to bidens controversial comments on segregationist senators. Cory booker talked about that this morning. Again, this is just another example of just conversations or lessons that joe biden shouldnt have to learn. Theres a lot of of his record from busing to the 1994 crime bill. What we have seen from the Vice President over the last month is an inability to talk candidly about the mistakes he made, about things he could have done better. When it comes to difficult issues about race, if you cant talk about your own development on these issues i think its very hard to lead our country forward. So chris, how can biden move past all this . Can he . I mean, we had the segregationist comments and then the busing moment with Kamala Harris. How could he not appear tone deaf to people of color and how can he pivot away from this conversation . Well, joe biden should befocusing on his record whether its violence against the women act. And what will help him in the most in the primary contest is his service as Vice President to a very popular president. Still in the Democratic Party. His work on the recover riff act in staving off the next great depression. His pushing of barack obama on marriage equality. His work in getting two Supreme Court nominees through the u. S. Senate and frankly talking about the importance of restoring a normalcy in Foreign Policy. You have basically just seen a president coming off a Foreign Policy trip where he continues to upend every norm there is. And frankly, joe biden would be better served to stop talking about senators who are no longer alive and talking about his vision for the future. Because thats what americans really want to hear. Well, lets talk about the effect of those comments. Lets look at the poll. Biden was leading among black Democratic Party voters so basil, are you expecting him to lose that lead . I dont know if the comments in and of themselves will cause a huge slippage, but comments over the course of time will start to chip into the support he gets in the community. In 2008, Hillary Clinton had a lot of support among the africanamericans in part because a lot of us still felt that the party she was a real strong leader in the party, that the party was a pathway to political and economic power. I think that they view joe bidens leadership similarly, but that changed in 2008 when bill clinton made some unfortunate remarks around South Carolina. So the question is does joe biden in the as hes making more and more of those remarks, does the sum total of it say to black voters, you know what, we like you, but we dont like you enough for us to elevate you to the point where youre going to be our leader. Especially if youre going to continue in this vein. In and of itself you may not see a huge slip but i think youll see a rise in Kamala Harris in terms of her numbers and her donations which we have seen. It may not hurt him, but elevate others. 2 million she got. In 24 hours. I like what cory booker is doing as well in his thoughtful sort of approach and challenge to joe biden in making him sort of come to grips with his own record. So i like again, going back to earlier comments, this is where race plays a really important and thoughtful role in the 2020 campaign. Basil smikle, chris lu, thank you very much. He crossed into the north korea side of the demilitarized side to meet the leader kim jongun earlier today which resulted with both parties reviving the stalled Nuclear Talks. It was soon followed by a 50 minute private meeting lasting longer than the plan of shaking hands. Lets go to seoul, south korea, to hans nichols. Tell us more about the meeting and the Key Takeaways from the trip. Well, the key takeaway is the president has confidence in his ability to personally negotiate deals whether thats with kim jongun or with the chinese and his willingness to talk to the iranians. The president s theory of the case on north korea has always been if he can convince kim that he wont invade, that his regime is secure and that if kim stops testing and giving up the Nuclear Weapons the president will deliver bus loads of cash in economic development. And you heard the president sort of preview this strategy or lay it out when he was talking to the troops after he met with kim. We had a very productive meeting. I outlined the incredible prosperity that awaits north korea when this whole thing gets settled. I have been talking about this for a long time. But thats a country with tremendous potential. This is a transactional deal according to the president. When you look at the video that the president produced for leading up to the singapore, it was how real estate could be a big driver of Economic Growth inside north korea. Heres where we stand this morning, monday morning already here. South koreans are digesting whats happening here. And the president is giving marching orders to his team, his negotiating team. Mike pompeo to have additional conversations. We are waiting to see who the North Koreans decide to appoint. Those people have a conversation and see whether or not they can do something more formal. This wasnt a formal summit. As you mentioned it did go on longer and the longer the two sides talked its indicative of progress. But the fundamental issues still remain and that is north korea has never indicated its willing to give up either the Nuclear Program or the Ballistic Missile program and both of those for the president is what he wants to see ultimately happen. Morgan, the one little bit of give from President Trump he seemed to suggest you could lift sanctions during the negotiations not after. That marks a movement from the president s original position. So pretty big implications for what was supposed to be an informal meeting. Hans nichols, thank you. Lets bring in our panel now. Joining me is a White House Reporter for axios and we have cabinet secretary chris lu. Elena, in a tweet, the president should take the north Korean Nuclear threat and its crimes against humanity seriously. This is not a photoop. Our security and our values are at stake. Several other 2020 candidates saw this historic visit really just as show. Was it . A lot of times it is. I think you have to look at how this came about. This president you have to give it to him. He knows how to surprise. He announced he wanted to meet with kim jongun in a tweet which came to the surprise of a lot of people and again it was supposed to be a hand shake. Of course that means it was supposed to be a big pr spectacle and it ended up being a television spectacle, especially when we saw him take those historic steps over the line at the dmz and into north korea. But i do think that this really does play up to what the president has we have seen him do with several foreign leaders. He relies on chemistry. He likes the spontaneous nature of the meetings and it led into the hour long meeting afterward to jump start negotiations. So its an interesting tactic and it definitely was put on for television and to make this media circus. But he did end up having a lot of valuable time with the north Korean Leader afterwards. Well, speaking of these tactics for show, lets switch gears for a minute because President Trump is claiming that the Obama Administration begged for a meeting with kim. Take a listen. President obama wanted to meet and chairman kim would not meet him. The Obama Administration was begging for a meeting. They were begging for meetings constantly. And chairman kim would not meet with him. And for some reason, we have a certain chemistry or whatever. Now, lets see what happens. We have a long way to go. But im in no rush. The sanctions are on and im in no rush. Chris, he says hes in no rush. Former obama Deputy National adviser ben rhodes wrote that trump is lying. I was there for all eight years and obama never sought a meeting with kim jongun. Foreign policy isnt reality television, its reality. So chris, is there any evidence that trump is telling the truth . There is no evidence not surprisingly that hes telling a lie here as my former colleague ben rhodes said. Lets be clear what hes trying to do. Hes trying to suggest that when he took over tensions were very high. They were high. But he ramped them up. I mean, he after all was the person that called kim rocket man. So whats happened over the past 2 1 2 years is basically to kind of get us back to where we were. When donald trump took office. So yet again this is another selfinflicted crisis that he comes in at the last minute and purports to solve. Heres the thing. Diplomacy by photo opportunity is not the same as real diplomacy. During the Obama Administration you saw the hard work that went in to improving relations not only with cuba, but with iran. And then you have seen this Current Administration try to undo both of those agreements, simply because they werent one side had been negotiated by the current president. So we have seen and these photoops before. Obviously, any time two adversaries talk thats a good thing. But that doesnt also mean Real Progress on the issue. Speaking of progress, molly, give us the big picture here. Where does china and south korea fit into this . How do they view this visit . Well, i think that when you look at this visit, i agree with the points being made that this was very spontaneous. I think that when you look at what happened a couple of months ago in vietnam where the talks fell through, we really do have to have the preparation going into these meetings and he was the president was criticized for this heavily after the talks fell apart because he was relying so heavily on the chemistry and on the spontaneity of what could happen in the room. He thinks if he can convince kim jongun that Economic Prosperity in the country would be enough to have them denuclearize north korea that he would agree to it and clearly they walked away the talks fell apart then. So i think a lot of countries are looking at this very skeptically. Theyre not again, a tv spectacle is not real diplomacy. There have to be things that follow that. And tactical progress. Thank you so much for joining us and chris, please stick around. Supreme surprises. Justices not always deciding how you might expect. Well look at key cases with unexpected outcomes. Rescue teams in Southern California found a 73yearold hiker alive and that was after a week in the wilderness. Eugene joe got separated from his group on a hike last weekend in the angeles forest. The New York Times is reporting that Justice Kavanaugh voted with gorsuch 53 of the time, though both men were appointed by mr. Trump. That was barely ahead of the rate at which he voted with kagan and breyer. This could come into play next session when the Supreme Court will decide the fate of daca protections for nearly 800,000 people. Joining me now is former assistant to president obama chris lu, and msnbc political contributor and former republican florida representative david jolly and msnbc legal analyst and former federal prosecutor cynthia oxny. Nbc news reports that the court divided along the typical ideological lines only seven times with those appointed by republican president s on one side and those appointed by democrats on the other. What could this mean, chris, for the fate of these daca protections . Well what it means is that the majority of the cases the Supreme Court looks at arent generally that ideological. We obviously focus on big ones like the census decision or gerrymandering. But the other ones i think dont fall that cleanly but with daca theres a broader issue about the limits of president ial authority. And as we saw last year this Supreme Court gave President Trump the authority to implement his muslim ban. Given his authority over National Security. What will be interesting to see here is whether they give that same level of deference to president obama and how the Immigration Law should be enforced. Enforcement is something traditionally within the executive power a and what limits they put on a subsequent president in this case, President Trump, to undue that policy. Lets talk about the impact on voters. David, the Supreme Court will be taking as we just heard the daca case next year. Of course the middle of the 2020 election and the New York Times points out the decision to let the Trump Administration end the program could energize angry democratic voters and immigration advocates to Campaign Even more aggressively against the president. If the Court Prevents mr. Trump from ending daca, that could fire up his base of voters. How do you see that playing out . Do you think thats a likely outcome . Oh, sure. Certainly. I think the Supreme Court will invalidate daca and actually give donald trump discretion for what direction he wants to go in and politically, ultimately voters make their decision based on the contrast between two candidates. What it comes down to is how wide is that contrast and which candidate best reflects that voters priorities and their vision for the country. Very likely this could end up in Donald Trumps lap where he has to say to the American People, this is the direction i want to go. Understand, daca was essentially executive relief for what is already a statute. The statute says dreamers are here illegally based on their conditions. President trump said by executive order im not going to enforce that. Its very similar to administrations saying we wont enforce federal Marijuana Policy for instance. But in this case it has a very human impact. Barack obama said were not going to deport these dreamers. If the Supreme Court says obamas executive order is essentially is invalidated then donald trump whats your vision of this country . Are you going to deport the dreamers or not and that will create contrast for voters going into next november. Speaking of that, cynthia, what does that actual process look like . During the first president ial debate we heard this very clear promise from senator harris and she said she would strengthen daca protection on her first day in office. Lets play the tape back. Immediately on january 20th of 2021, i will first of all, we cannot forget our Daca Recipients so im going to start there. I will immediately by executive action reinstate daca status and daca protection to the young people and further extend protection for deferral of deportation for their parents. So cynthia, take us to january 20, 2021. What does that process actually look like . Well, first, we have to get through the Supreme Court ruling and whats interesting about whats happening there is that they can rule on a very narrow grounds. Because the Trump Administration is making the argument that the Supreme Court is not even allowed to decide if they can strike daca. Theyre saying as a matter of law legally it was illegal to start, so now the Supreme Court cannot even review it. Well, what might happen when the Supreme Court rules is they may send it back and say, yes, we can review it and you have to come up with reasons if you want to get rid of it. If that happens on january 20th, daca will still be in place and what the next president will have to do is make a decision on how theyll change it. Or if theyre going to keep it. So i dont think that we necessarily are going to have an up or down on daca by the time theres the next president. Well have an up and down on marburger versus madison, and the Trump Justice Department is at battle with this. We have heard a number of civil Rights Groups calling on congress, how likely is that, chris . Well, i think its really not likely during this administration. But i think whats important to understand with daca we dont need the Supreme Court to make a decision on this. Earlier this month the house of representatives passed a bill that would provide Legal Protection to these young people. And the bill is basically sitting on the desk of Mitch Mcconnell who has said he will not take this up notwithstanding the fact theres bipartisan support from both the house and the senate and this provision than part of bipartisan immigration bills in 2006 and 2013 so congress can solve this problem right now if it chooses. A rough start for the new White House Press secretary Stephanie Grisham after a scuffle with north korean guards. Take a look at this. Stop. No. Let go. I need help here. U. S. Go, stop. No. Let go. I need help here. You can see hear her saying i need help here as she clears a path for u. S. Reporters. So lets bring in the panel to discuss it. We have msnbc correspondent Mike Viqueira and Eleanor Clift from the daily beast. Mike, you tweeted about this scuffle and you said it was as chaotic a tussle and outrageous a scene as you have ever saw. Why . I have been going to photoops for 30 years and theyre a nultionz a nice choreography. If youre in western europe, everyone goes in and waves and everyone understands there as pool, designated individuals here to represent all american networks. Each Network Takes its turn. Stephanie grisham they say they have a combative style. She has been the first ladys press secretary for the length of the secretary, there you see her literal legal pushing a north korean security personnel. But reports that she literally came away bruised from this interaction with the north korean media. She wanted the press corps to get that picture and of course theyll be appreciative of that and thats part of the whole point. A photoop. To have the president taking the steps, the First Time Ever walking into north korean territory. Lets have a look at that bit of video. If you can see the choreography here. The North Koreans had a different idea of exactly how this goes. It was a different one actually when you see President Trump and chairman kim walking across the border. You see the north korean photographers all swarming around the pair. There you see it. Right there. Meanwhile, the u. S. Photographer is doing what they have been trained or to do or the practice we have been doing for administration upon administration, staying back behind the roped line. And meanwhile, the north korean photographer is getting all the photographs that he needs and wants as the white house photographers are screaming at the north korean photographers to get out of the way. Theyre either unaccustomed or unwilling to give the u. S. And the south korean press the access they were accustomed to. Extraordinary bit of jostling and a tumultuous photoop. The white house wanted the American Press regardless of all the enemy of the people rhetoric to have that picture, a clean view of the president meeting with chairman kim. Well, thats what i find so interesting. First of all, no one should have to experience that. Ms. Grisham shouldnt have bruises or her body and she wanted to make sure that the White House Press pool was getting access to the president and the meeting with kim jongun when the scuffle happened. Which is a far cry from say battling with the reporter to get a mic out of their hands. So could this be a sign that this press secretary will be more of an advocate for the press . I think its hard to use this one instance as how shell shape the rest of her time as press secretary. She has in the past when she was a spokeswoman for Melania Trump the first lady, she has fought with the press before. So its unclear what will happen moving forward but i think that a lot of the White House Press corps are going to be incredibly appreciative of this. For her to really walk away with actual bruises trying to make sure that the people who were assigned to get that shot got the shot i think is definitely going to go a long way with reporters here. And eleanor, give us a sense of things. What will her larger scope of responsibility look like . Could we see the return of press briefings . Its been more than a hundred days since the last one. Well, she obviously gains points with the press because she fought for them to get access and she fought for it because it makes her boss look good. How shes going to conduct the presses of will it be more in the style of hope hicks who was very close to the president working on communications. She was kind of a stealthy aide. She worked independently with reporters but never went before the cameras. Sarah sanders stopped the briefings now a couple of months ago. Will Stephanie Grisham start them up again . I dont see any history of her in her background of being comfortable before the camera takes questions. Shes a crisis operator, if you look at her beginnings in arizona. She worked for two republican officials who had problems with charges of corruption and she fought very hard on their behalf and she even advocated for a time for a law that would have required reporters to have criminal background checks before they were allowed access into the legislative chambers to cover the government. But everybody describes her as a fierce advocate and people who dealt with her individually speak highly of her and she won some sort of an award in arizona as the you know, the Public Relations official of the year. So does she see herself again in the private almost Family Member advocating for the president or does she see herself in a broader message advocating for the press and would she be willing to hold these press briefings we dont know the answer to that. Its interest you describe her as a fierce advocate. What are you hearing in d. C. . Former press secretary, Sarah Huckabee sanders, her last day was on friday and she joins the growing list of the white house departures. What are you hearing there in d. C. . Does it sound like grisham has staying power . Its an article of faith that the only Communications Director in the white house sits behind the resolution desk in the oval office and thats of course the president of the United States. Hes known for how should we call it, his impetuous style, blind siding the top congressional aides and liaisons on down the line and the tweets declaring one policy or another and surprising everyone involved. Sometimes based on what he has seen in fox news or elsewhere in the media. And so for to give too much weight sort of the traditional role of the press secretary and keep in mind, its two separate roles. The Communications Director and press secretary, but to give anybody that much weight in a traditional sense as we have seen in past administrations, whether they be republican or democrat, we broke the mold a long time ago around here. We nearly had press briefings there hasnt been one in months and sometimes we see top aides in the driveway, everybody sort of clutches their pearls because that never happened before either, but the mold has been broken here. Its sort of apples to oranges to compare this administrations Communications Operations and message discipline to the extent there is message discipline to past administrations. Seems like business is usual is business is usual. Thank you all for joining us. Thank you for spending the afternoon with me. Now i hand it over to my colleague. Good to see you. Enjoy your weekend. Right . Way to go. Good to see you. First things first and there were three firsts of note in just the last 24 hours. The first time a sitting u. S. President standing on north korean soil. The first time a sitting u. S. President visited the dmz with the leader of south korea. All for another first, a sitting u. S. President meeting with the leader of north korea at the dmz. I actually stepped in with chairman kim. I stepped into north korea. And they say and they say thats a very historic moment. He asked me, would you like to do that . And i said, it would be my honor. And we did. And we went over the line. That entire thrust that put north korea into the 2020 debate with Democratic Candidates responding on the political talk shows. I am all for speaking with our adversaries. But whats happened here is that this president has raised the profile of a dictator like kim jongun. Now three times visited with him unsuccessfully. I have no problem with him sitting down with kim jongun in north korea or anyplace else. But i dont want it simply to be a photo opportunity. Of course, as a country, we want this to work. We want to see a denuclearization of the korean peninsula, reduction in these missiles. But its not as easy and bringing a hot dish over the fence to the dictator next door. Democratic hopefuls blanket the country today. Carrying
