Court of public opinion. We begin this hour in iowa with the contenders. A big event for democrats happening within the next hour. It comes fresh off new polling showing significant shifts. Yes, joe biden, still leading the pack. Hes lost several points since march. A slide for senator Bernie Sanders coupled with some major gains by fellow senator Elizabeth Warren and mayor Pete Buttigieg, put the three in a virtual tie. The new numbers as a whopping 19 candidates converge on cedar rapids, iowa, for the states largestever democrat hall of fame reception that is happening this afternoon. We have Team Coverage with our Political Panel right here. Were going to get started in cedar rapids with our road warrior, Shaquille Brewster. And shaq, youre outside the hall of fame event right now. Just hours after this new poll was released, whats the vibe so far . How are the campaigns taking it all in . Reporter well, you said the 19 candidates have come to cedar rapids. Its not only the 19 candidates, but its all their volunteers and supporters. I have to tell you, thats Bernie Sanders. He was marching with striking mcdonalds workers. Hes marching to the event right now. Just look around. You have Amy Klobuchar and her supporters there just walking in. Kamala harris, kirsten gillibrand. Cory booker just spoke to his supporters outside. Just to set this up, 19 candidates are going to be speaking at that hall of fame dinner. Its a democratic event here in cedar rapids. And with all the candidates here in town not only to get their pitches, theyre going to have five minutes to make their case to these activists, but also to have events outside. We know some candidates have gone to church services. Others have gone and had that that meeting with the striking mcdonalds workers. Very busy day here in cedar rapids. It is the setup to west wide story it seems out there with the sharks and jets, with everybody in their own parts right now. So joe biden is noticeably absent from iowa this weekend. Were learning some reasons why. What is it . Reporter thats exactly right. One of the candidates not here is Vice President joe biden. This is a tweet we just saw, im pulling it from troy price. He said, glad i picked up the phone when it said no caller i. D. It was Vice President biden wishing Iowa Democrats well today and that he wished he could be here, but it was his granddaughters graduation. An event that he would postpone an inauguratil for. Hope they have a great day. Vice President Biden not here. Some people aread into that. He wasnt in california when they had another cattle calllike event with candidates coming in. Vice President Biden and the campaign saying he wants to be with his granddaughter. Despite that, you see the candidates. I havent seen Vice President s campaign or signage for his campaign here. A lot of other candidates who want to make their voices known. Including that dog right there. And we are told that the that biden plans to be there on tuesday. He will make it to the Hawkeye State after all. Right in the middle of it all. Lets break down where the race stands now and what we can glean from the poll numbers. Here with me is michael stooefl, former spokesperson for House Speaker john bany, the Democratic Political consultant, and former Obama Administration official. Well start in studio 3a with julia. You see the poll numbers. What do you glean from that . I glean from that that name vision paramount this early on. But i would say to joe biden, if he wants to maintain that lead, he needs to get out some more. He cant do this and parachute in what he wants. Hillary clinton suffered from that a few years ago when her campaign kept her away from the voters to an extent that i thought was a little too much. I would say to joe biden, i understand his granddaughters graduation is today, but hes got to get on the ground. Hes got to contend with the field. If not hes going to go into potential general election not the shape he wants to be with primary democratic voters. Some found if surprising that he did not inform the Democratic People in iowa beforehand that that was the rationale behind why he was missing this big event. What do you make of it . Yeah. That feels like interov feels like important oversight. Im going to talk about joe biden and what weve seen. One, joe biden recently confronted an issue which he was out of step with the Democratic Party. Listened to prague relatives and activists and got the message,s and thats good news. One other thing, the good news i think for the Democratic Party on the change is there are a lot of democrats who have been in the same boat, who have held that position on the Hyde Amendment for a long time. And if this causes them to reevaluate their support and get in a good place, then i think thats good for everybody. I think where democrats need to be is this nobody should be denied reproductive care or rights because theyre poor. Thats it. And to you, Michael Steele because mayor buttigieg saw the largest growth, 13 points, followed by senator warren. What do you think is behind the surge there . I not hes a fresh i think hes a fresh face. Democrats are looking for something new. The point that was made was exactly wrong. One of the strengths of joe biden is that he has a more moderate position than most of the candidates in this race on the democratic side. That makes him a stronger general election candidate. I think that, one, abandoning a position that 60 or so of the americans agree with because of pressure from activists is not a good place to be going into the election, and abandoning position of conscience at the urging of your staff and the former staff of whos the boss looks weak. He is a weak frontrunner, i think its going to continue to show in sliding polls, particularly if he doesnt show up at events like this and defend his positions. There are a lot of people saying you dont want to be the leader at all of the polls at this point because theres only one way to go. And joe biden, see we have this tweet now, his campaign popped up a tweet for best friends day yesterday. Showing joe and barack, while people thought it was interesting, some thought it sounded too thirsty. What do you make of how his campaign is going . You know, i think hes running for Barack Obamas third term. A lot of democrats wish barack obama could have had a third term. This is the bed that hes made, and he lying in it. He has consistently said he was Barack Obamas numberone partner some say this is a joke, right . I think its a joke because i think hes made those bracelets back at camp when i was about 13. Its indicative of the fact that he is the heir to the obama legacy and can lay that claim this ways nobody else can in the campaign. Many want to, but he was obamas Vice President and has the ability to do that. But Pete Buttigieg is a fresh, new face. For that reason, somebody like that can come up behind biden and pretend not pretend but establish himself as the person for the 21st century that biden no longer can. Jake, you worked in the former administration. In a lot of ways Hillary Clinton tried to run for for a third obama term right there. And so is it a good idea to try to run with the obama legacy for biden . Its definitely a starting place. I think that, you know, he served in an extremely popular administration, especially among democrats. Thats a good place to start. He needs to get beyond that, which is what i think hes doing starting to say not only will i extend these policies and feeling of the Obama Administration, but im going to reach out to people who have felt like they were left behind and understand the breadth of the challenge that were facing. I think its a starting place, but it cant be where it ends. I want to say to michaels point, as well, when hes talking about 60 of people agreeing with the Hyde Amendment, if you ask the question, if you say, you know, should women who are poor, women of low income have access to Reproductive Health care, should have access to reproductive rights, they will overwhelmingly say yes. Thats in battleground states theyll say yes. It depends on how you ask the question. I think the American People are more where the democrats are on this issue than than the position that hes describing. You want to weigh in on that . No, i think its look, the fair way to ask the question is do you support taxpayer funding for abortion, thats the way its asked when 60 of the American People oppose it. Thats why many Congressional Democrats agree with the Vice President s former position. Thats why, again, this is a bad look because its the Vice President getting bullied out of a position that would help him in the general election, particularly in the upper midwestern states like pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin, in order to appease the left and the democratic primary let me this took place during one week in politics. Were still 200plus days out from iowa. Do you think people are going to remember any of this and what took place and the transition that the former Vice President had in this past week . I think his position on a fundamental matter of conscience is something that people are going to be interested in during the democratic primaries and in the general election, absolutely. All right. Lets talk about wednesday because it is the deadline, as you guys know, for the democrats to qualify for the first debate. Will we see these new poll numbers impact all of that, the dynamic of the candidates . Julie . I mean, certainly the poll numbers are relevant into what makes the debate, who makes the debate stage. This is the first opportunity for some of these lower ranking members or senators, congress people, candidates, to break out. Somebody like a cory booker who i know well and prepped for both of his senate debates, for example, has the opportunity to really establish himself in this debate if he makes the debate stage. Others who are not polling where they want to be have the opportunity to really take off. But it is early. And they do have the opportunity to maintain that. To your earlier point, i will say, donald trump led from the start of the polls and continued to lead all the way through the primary. I think joe biden, may not want to be a frontrunner now but pi bet people would rather be joe biden than not be joe biden at this point. Few democrats who have led this early on has gotten the nomination. Hillary clinton i believe was the last one within the last few decades to actually win the nomination. Jake, to you, and the setup for this debate. Of course, were 17 days away from the miami debate. Right now, if youre advising a candidate, they have no idea who theyll be debating much less what night theyll be debating on. What would your advice be to a candidate in them trying to prepare for it . So this is i would say this is a strength of this moment in the debates is that you dont know who youre going to be up against. Which means you have to focus on your message, what you believe, and communicating that effectively to the public. You have a very brief amount of time, you got ten candidates on stage, you have a brief amount of time to make the case for why you. This is the moment to do that. So you need to be ready to make that case effectively. It has to feel authentic. It has to come from where you are, and you have to do it in fronts. A whole lot in front of a whole lot of people. I think you effectively made your case there. Thanks to julie, jake, and michael. Please stick around, by the way. Were 17 days, as i mentioned, from the first president ial debate of the election cycle. June 26th, june 27th, in miami. Primetime event will be broadcast live across the nbc platforms, of course. Were going to remind you about all of that. President trump attempted the humble brag for winning a trade war that he actually started, writing everyone, very excited about the new deal with mexico, but according to new reporting from the New York Times it turns out this deal is not so new. It writes mexico agreed to take border actions months before trump announced his tariff deal which prompted this fourpart tweet storm from the president. There you see it. Lashing out against the newspaper, calling it the true enemy of the people. Joining me live from the white house lawn is nbcs ron allen. Ron, give us a little bit of play by play of how the timeline for this whole thing unfolded. Reporter you have to remember there are ongoing talks between the United States and mexico about immigration problems at the border. And some of these principles that were announced as a big deal were apparently agreed to many months ago. For example, heres some of the timeline back in december of 2018, mexico agreed to expand the allowance of Asylum Seekers to remain in mexico. These are people who requested asylum in the United States, who are going to stay in mexico while their cases are heard. It could take years. Then in march of 2019, mexico agreed to deploy its National Guard troops. On may 30th, the president announced that the mexico trade tariffs would go into effect. On june 5th, u. S. Officials met with mexican officials for negotiations. And then on june 8th, the mexican president agrees to deploy the National Guard throughout mexico. And so forth. Now the administration is saying that while there may have been agreements reached months ago that what has happened is that the agreements were expanded. The number of troops has been increased from as many as 5,000 to 6,000. And some are arguing that the troops were never deployed even though the mexicans said they would. This is all pretty complicated stuff. Its also further complicated by the fact that there are a lot of doubts about whether the mexicans actually had the capacity to really affect a lot of change on the border even if they do deploy 6,000 troops down to the border with guatemala where a lot of Central Americans have been coming in, a huge part of the problem. Those are police, theyre theyre guard troops who would be doing other things in the country. Cracking down on crime and violence and other things. Also, theres a lot of concern about whether if these Asylum Seekers who applied for asylum in the u. S. And then stay in mexico while their cases are being heard, whether the mexicans have the composite to care for the people have the ability to care for the people in a humane way. The devil is in the details as they say. And going forward, the mexicans are cautioning that even though this deal was reached, its going to take some time before there can be anything significant at the border. The president , its unclear what he wants to see happen that will satisfy him before he will threaten more tariffs. And of course, critics are saying that that this deal was basically agreed to, that the president threatened tariffs, created this huge crisis, and then raced in to solve it himself, to appeal to his base because immigration is such a hot issue. And of course, how you see this depends on your politics. Indeed. It does seem like the conquering hero at the end of the day. Ron allen at the white house. Our thanks to you. Lets go back to where all of this started. The president surprised many kue actually in his administration and the officials when he announced the tariffs. What was happening at the time . The news siebcycle was dominate Robert Mueller first public speech in which he said he did not exonerate trump of obstruction of justice. It was a mere 32 hours between muellers appearance and trumps surprise tariff tweet. Joining me to discuss former assistant to president obama, chris lou, and former Senior Adviser to jeb bush, Michael Steele and White House Correspondent for the hill, jordan fabian. Welcome. Chris, i want to start with you. We laid out the timeline there. Did one have to do with the other . What do you think was behind the whole threat from tariffs by the president . Well, im not going to speculate what was behind the threats. Whats clear here is that this is the product of, frankly, the president s rhetoric and negotiating style. When you say every deal you cut is the gusty, people are going to rightly question whats in it. When you threaten a tariff and trade wars, people are going to expect big results. The truth about all this is that immigration is really hard. And it cant be solved with tariff threats. It ultimately needs to be not just Border Security it needs to be the fundamental reasons why migrants are coming from central america. And so this constant push and pull, and were going to be back at this in 90 days because thats essentially what the joint statement says, is not good for foreign policy, and its certainly not good for u. S. Businesses that need predictability and reliability. And jordan, you know, we were talking to ron allen just there about the timeline of how this worked out. Of course there were negotiations at the white house where you cover every day. Take me through exactly what took place and how it all played out. Well, the mexican delegation arrived in washington last week and essentially spent every single day in meetings with folks in the Trump Administration trying to persuade them not to go forward with these tariffs. The tariffs would be devastating for the mexican economy which relies very much on u. S. Goods. So they were in a room with Vice President pence, the acting Homeland Security secretary, and mike pompeo, secretary of state, on wednesday, and you know, we only heard really one side of this from mexican officials. They seemed hopeful then the president was getting briefed on this while he was in europe. He wasnt even a part of it. The big question for the Administration Officials was, if they reached this deal, would it be enough for the president to accept it given his hardline rhetoric on this topic. And eventually, you know, it appears, you know, looking at what was agreed to, this is stuff that was talking about, the administration had been talking about for months, and it seems like the president chose to save face here considering how much blow back he was getting from capitol hill, the business community, and decided to take the easy way out for now. But like chris pointed out, well be back in this situation most likely within 90 days. It was hard to find a republican senator who was in support of these new tariffs that the president was threatening. Michael, in the meantime, the wisconsin senator, ron johnson, was on fox news sunday. Take a listen. Republicans understand the tariffs are attacks on American Consumers, we dont want to see them in place long term. Nor do i believe President Trump does either. Hes using tariffs as leverage in trade negotiations. And i think he used them as leverage in this situation brilliantly. Brilliantly, michael . Your thoughts . Yeah. I think thats sloikt right. As a salt lake rigthats ex. I think hes the president of the narrative, saw a bod bad story and wanted to change it. Whether it was supporters saying they wouldnt have been agreed to if it werent for the president s focus on removing Border Security, from the president s point of view, were talking about his efforts to improve Border Security and protect the American People from this threat. I think its a win for the president in terms of controlling the narrative and making himself the hero of the story that hes telling. Yeah. In the meantime, chris, as you know, theres a staggering 24 immigrants who have died in i. C. E. Custody so far under the watch of the Trump Administration. Why do you get the sense that the president is focusing so much energy on these tariffs instead of the actual crisis that is taking place there on american soil with those folks . Well, thats exactly right. I mean, look, tariffs are a strategy. But you are wrong to conflate tariffs with immigration policy. Immigration policy Like Health Care policy is pretty complicated. As i said, its not just stopping the fly of migrants here. Its stopping the flow of migrants here. Its about Border Security, cracking down on u. S. Employers who are breaking the rules. Its dealing with the 11 million undocumented and, frankly, dealing with the humanitarian crisis at the border. More money needs to go to for beds right now, for providing treatment to those migrants. We certainly need to process their cases much quicker. All of this requires people that the white house and Congress Sitting around a table trying to resolve these issues. These oneoff threats might seem like political wins, but they ultimately dont solve a very complicated problem. And jordan, there is another issue that the white house is dealing with. Steve mnuchin told my colleagues at cnbc the president is perfectly happy to move forward with tariffs on china if the two countries cant come to an agreement on a new trade deal. Should we expect to see that coming to fruition any time soon . Well, kendis, President Trump is expected to meet with chinese president xi jinping at the g20 later at this month. And the expectation is that they would at least discuss a deal there. Whether they can reach one is a different story. Weve seen there kinds of proceed in fits and starts while in a deal seemed like it was likely and then it wasnt. But the Bigger Picture here is, you know, the president really needs the economy to be in good shape for him to win reelection in 2020. Its really the crux of his campaign. And a lot of people feared within his administration and on capitol hill that this mexico tariff situation, if they actually had gone ahead with it, would have compounded the economic difficulties that were seeing with this traced war with china. You know the trade war with china. You know, the jobs report last week was well below expectations. If that continues as a trends, a lot of people in the white house were saying you need to take steps to stabilize the economy. If that spirals out of control, youre in big trouble next year. And there are many, many signs, the red flag is being waved now that this economy is in trouble or heading there. Thanks to chris lu, Michael Steele, and jordan, thank you, guys. Tomorrow the House Judiciary Committee will hold hearings on the obstruction volume. On tuesday, that chamber will vote on a contempt resolution against attorney general bill barr and don mcghan for failing to comply with subpoenas. And then, wait, theres more. On wednesday, counterintelligence experts will testify before the House Intelligence Committee on volume one of the Mueller Report. Right now democrats are ramping up their criminal investigations against the president. Get this its dizzying. At least 25 congressional subpoenas have been issued by House Committee leaders since the democrats took control of the chamber. The white house has been refusing to turn over a majority of the evidence. For more lets bring in National Security correspondent, its still going, correspondent of politico and msnbc contributor Natasha Bertrand and attorney as well as words matter podcast host katy barlow. Thank you for being here. Natasha, i want to start with you. Whats the democrats political strategy here for the whole public hearings this week . Well, i think that theyre not getting many answers from several of the actual witnesses that mueller interviewed over the course of his investigation. And so they think the next best thing is to interview people with extensive expertise and obstruction of justice, and in the House Intelligence Committees case on wednesday theyre going to be holding an open hearing on the counterintelligence implications of the Mueller Report which will highlight i think all of the National Security risks that were posed by the trump campaigns many contacts with russia during the election as well as russias just overall interference in 2016 and how to prevent that from happening again. So i think before the democrats can actually get mueller to sit before them and testify, if that actually even happens, they have yet to issue a subpoena for him, theyre waiting to figure out, to accommodate him, theyre going to interview john dean, for example, theyre going to interview former federal prosecutors who have experience in this that can explain it to the American People in a way that can make them understand the real key issues of the Mueller Report. Let me pick up on that with katy. As you mentioned, so john dean is expected before the Judiciary Committee tomorrow. Heres a list of some of the other folks who will be there, as well. Today one of those witnesses that you see there, msnbc legal analyst Barbara Mcquaid gave us a sneak peek at what to expect from her tomorrow. Ive seen prosecution memos like Robert Muellers, and so i can share that experience and try to put for them in context the significance of those acts that are described there. There has been so much commentary on what it says that i think some of the facts may have been lost. So i think success would be an understanding of the facts that are in that report and the seriousness of it. You have Barbara Mcquaid with david gura earlier, what are they trying to get across . I think the Judiciary Committee and charmd nadler has been chairman nadler has been clear from the beginning. Theyre trying to get to the underlying information related to Robert Muellers investigation and his report. The vote thats happening on tuesday is very interesting and different from what chairman nadler did last month. We all know last month that he recommended Holding Bill Barr in criminal contempt. But thats actually different from whats happening on tuesday. Tuesday is a different route to try and get at this information. Something theyve consistently done. And thats trying thats trying, passing a vote that will allow them to go to a court to enforce the subpoena. And then if the department of justice and bill barr doesnt comply, a coequal branch of government can enforce the subpoena and hold bill barr in contempt. Its different from the criminal contempt we were talking about last month. I think all eyes will be on that vote this week. Thats a key legal strategy that they have right there on tuesday. Yes. Exactly. And Something Different and within their power. We know that congress has Inherent Authority to arrest an individual that doesnt comply with the subpoena. But they havent done that in over 100 years. So i think this is actually a more clever way to get at the information that theyre trying to see. Interesting. Natasha, lets move on to wednesday. As we mentioned, its going to be a busy week. House Intelligence Panel hearing will feature testimony from two former fbi officials who worked in the bureaus National Security branch. Interesting. Weve been reporting on this. What more are you learning . Yeah, so one of the witnesses thats going to be testifying, his name is robert anderson. And he was actually the one who wrote an affidavit for the government in the maria butina case. Maria butina was arrested last july, has been in prison for acting as an unregistered agent of the russian government through her activities with the National Rifle association, with various republicans during the election. And he wrote for the government that she was acting not only as a Foreign Agent of russia but actually that she her whole operation here was actually a sophisticated intelligence operation. Even if she wasnt actually a spy it posed serious National Security threat to the United States. So he has extensive experience in dealing with counterintelligence issues for the fbi and for the Justice Department over decades. So he will be testifying on wednesday about all of the implications of volume one of the Mueller Report because mueller obviously could not prove that a criminal conspiracy had occurred. Proof beyond a reasonable doubt, of course. But he did outline a number of things that could pose a serious threat to our National Security. Yeah. And he mentioned it at the end of his press conference, as well. And highlighting it, that the counterintelligence part of this investigation is really one of most significant parts of it. Our thanks to katy and natasha. Thank you guys. We turn right now to an nbc news exclusive. One of our crews is getting extensive access to the ageless b52 air force bomber in qatar as tensions between the Trump Administration and iran reach a new high. Tehran has been pulling back some ships in the region. But u. S. Officials are closely watching the situation. In fact, over the past month, American Military stations all across the middle east have been preparing for a possible attack from iran. Nbc newss Courtney Kube is at a post and takes us behind the mission on the Nuclear Power uss maybe it ham linco u ss s abraham lincoln. Hi, kendis. You spoke with general frank mctensy. Where do mckenzie. Where do they feel things stands now with iran . Reporter so general mckenziey maintains that the threat from iran and proxy forces remains very real. And is still imminent. But what has changed over the last week or two is that one of the areas that the u. S. Military was very concerned about and thats the maritime threat, particularly in the persian gulf and the strait of hormuz, some of the tension there has gone down a bit. General mckenzie credits the addition of some large military assets to the region. One being the uss abraham lincoln, aircraft carrier, and another this bomber task force. These are b52s, there are right here at the air base in qatar. General mckenzie maintain thats even though tensions are down, there still are threats. Particularly from shia militia groups, iranianbaked militia groups in iraq and the houthis in yemen, for any attacks against saudi arabia or ships and into the red sea. We spoke with general mckenzie specifically about the impact he thinks that these additional military assets are having. Heres what he had to say the fact that the carriers been here has caused the iranians to recalculate. Its very concerning to them that this big chunk of american will is sitting here, operated by these great americans. Reporter do you see yourself sending some more assets in in response to the threat . Were in a constant assessment process, talking to the chairman, talking to the secretary. And well make those decisions as we come to them. Reporter so as you heard from general mckenzie there, the threat remains throughout the region. He continues to say that its potentially imminent, and of course this is from iran and iranianbased iranianbacked proxies against americans. And theres the Intelligence Committee that have seen briefings and say they dont see this threat that the u. S. Military is talking about. And today his own sister is calling his rescue simply spectacular. This morning after nearly a week lost in the wild, Josh Mcclatchy is finally getting a chance to rest. I do have him. I do have him. Reporter the texas man, an experienced hiker, was on a solo hike in arkansas for his 38th birthday. He was hiking in the National Forest on the buckeye trail. A rugged trek with unmarked turns where hikers often end up lost but are soon found. Mcclatchy posting photos with the caption im safe and sound. The next day he texted his mom saying he was lost. The extensive grounds and Aerial Search began. But rescuers were unable to locate him for six days. Put him in custody, lets not lose him again. And Authorities Say optimal weather played a big role in helping to track down mcclatchy, allowing a helicopter with infrared technology to fly over the area before eventually finding joshua. Im literally nauseous from seeing the rescue of the women spinning for 45 of the woman spinning for 45 seconds. Thanks. The power of documentaries. Dont take mavyret with atazanavir or rifampin, or if youve had certain liver problems. Common side effects include headache and tiredness. With hep c behind me, i feel free. Fearless. And theres no looking back, because i am cured. Talk to your doctor about mavyret. Documentaries have the power to tell profound stories. They make us laugh, they make us cry, and even inspire at times. And in todays culture, many have contributed to real and measurable change for events that took place decades ago. Take for instance the central park five case. Back in 1989 a new york jury has found three teenagers guilty of raping and beating a woman jogger. Defense lawyers argued the teenagers were pressured into confessing. That they were victims of a biased legal system. Anxious to solve a crime against a white woman. Okay, so that was then. Look at how one docuseries impacted the case now. The miniseries triggering new backlash against one of the prosecutors behind the 1989 convictions. Linda fairstein. Calls for boycotts of her crime novels. A petition getting more than 50,000 signatures. Fairsteins twitter account deleted as anger boiled over with the trending hash tag cancellindafairstein. Website. Theres more. Just today the New York Daily News report wanted that two years after collecting a 41 million payout the men received another 3. 9 million payout from the state of new york. Remember the 2008 trial and disturbing allegations against r b singer r. Kelly . Just getting the rest of the verdict. The jury acquits him on all counts of the child pornography trial. This has been going on for several years now. And then this year you had the lifetime docuseries that took a deeper look into kellys alleged victims. In the the lifetime docu ser accusers detailing what they call his predatory behavior including claims of sex with minors and homes filled with sex slaves under kellys control. It is a cult. Okay. You get the point. The jinx investigated is robert durst was responsible for several murders. Listen to his alleged confession caught on tape. What the hell did i do . Hmm hmm. Killed them all, of course. That was something, wasnt it . The day before the episode ashed he was arrested and now on trial for murder of his friends. These are just a few of the cases in the past that came under intense fire but is now being revisited. Leaving many people today outraged, shocked and asking how did this happen in the first place . Joining me is Anthony Laroche and media analyst. All right. So we laid it out there. Eric, stating with you. The central park five kiss and the outcry over the former prosecutor who went on to fame and her role in the wrongful conviction. When you see that sort of stuff happen and what happened afterwards and the impact of the ducoseries, what do you say . First thing is that when they see us is not a docuseries. Its a scripted series that tells tells a story that happened and based on the testimonials of the five young men caught at the center of this central park jogger rain. Yes. Initially accused and convicted of raping her and then someone else stepped forward to say he did it. I would say whats happening here is were having these pieces of television based on real life that were made about something that happened when we felt one way about an issue and coming to television and asking hus to reconsider in the current light. So the central park five convicted when people in new york and across the country were really worried about rising crime, were paranoid about it in a way, overreacting. This is around the time of seeing the idea of super predators emerging and so they were tried in a climate in america and in new york city that was very different than now when were going back and looking at that stuff and were seeing that we were unfair to people and that we were perpetuating myths and stereotypes of young, black men and the rush to deal with rising crime and when they see us presents a story and gets us to reconsider and experience it in a modern light. An enthats what the best scripted series about the past and doc series do. They retell a story and have us reconsider something that happened in the past in the modern light. No doubt, whether its a tv series, theyre triggering emotions and getting people fired up and taking action. Is that what is at the basis of all of this . I think so but i also think its expansion of the forurth estate. There was a documentary on the central park five and the testimonies i argue that we havent changed and we have a system right now that is putting wrongfully accused, young men, black and brown bodies, young women, in jail and it is also a reflection of what system is and i think it also is a reflection of what can happen with success that comes from the poisoned tree. What do you make of the fallout for the prosecutor . That is success of the fruit of the fallen tree. 23 books out right now and sent five men to jail. And i think this is giving a do people not know she was having this success . I think it sheds a light on i think it sheds a light on the fact that there was a moment, because lets be real. These young men were all of jail in 2002. Whats happened now is that theres been a humanization of the case where people can see men who look like their neighbor, men who look like their sons, men who look like their husbands when they were younger, and they can really go this shouldnt have happened and it brings it back into the culture zitgeist. Makes you look at who is responsible for that. If i could break in. I want to move on very quickly to r. Kelly because he is reliving his own allegations stemming from 20 years ago and as of recent as today this week he pleaded not guilty to 11 new sex related charges which, of course, including a ra investigated criminal sexual abuse, carries a heavy sentence. Do you believe in this case the me too movement helped to put the stot light in that particular case . I think without a doubt. Again, i think surviving r. Kelly is an example where the six women who were featured in that docuseries and told their stories spoken out before. I think every one of them had spoken out publicly before and its the power of television, the ability to take their stories and the many other people they talked to, two relatives of his, his exwife, they talked to people who used to work for r. Kelly, former producers and things like that and they wove together this amazing tapestry on television to show people what it was like and i think it came to air at a time when thanks to the me too movement we are looking back at sell brings who were accused of serious sex crimes in the past and seemed to get away with it and were reevaluating those results and saying, you know, did they were they really fairly exonerated or did the wealth and the power and the fame cause people to overlook problems with things that they have been accused of . I think in r. Kellys case thats a perfect example, that series got people to reconsider r. Kelly and now facing a raft of new charges. Yeah. Hes pleaded not guilty and in many cases its relitigating the things prosecutors should have done years ago. Our thanks to you guys. Well, still ahead right here, the upcoming showdown in the Hawkeye State of joe biden and the president. Could the decision to skip out on the event help or hurt the former Vice President . Im Kendis Gibson here in new york. More than 200 days until the Iowa Caucuses and according to a new poll if they were voting today joe biden would be the top pick. The two candidates gaining ground after the hyde reversal and Climate Change controversy. Is the Campaign Starting to lose momentum . The president is touting it as a win but the New York Times report claims that mexico had agreed to increase security at the border several months ago. Is the tariff threat real or all trump and circumstance . A day of pride turns into fear during a parade in washington, d. C. Well get to all of that in a moment. But things are heating up in the Hawkeye State. 19 president ial hopefuls are swarming iowa today but the latest polling of likely caucus goers to rattle the race. Joe biden is still leading the pack and the frontrunner lost several points in the last few months and some nearest opponents are gaining ground. Theres a virtual tie for second. The contenders are preparing for a largest gathering of the election cycle so far. Look at them. Theyre there at the democrats hall of fame dinner in iowa. Theyll pitch to an audience made up largely of state Party Officials and activists. The first round of speakers includes senator booker, congressman swalwell and sanders. We have Team Coverage with the Political Panel here and starting in cedar rapids where Shaquille Brewster joins us now. How are the candidates reacting to the latest polls . Reporter well, so far theyre just trying to play up and have a show of force so they had signs, volunteers here. They were chanting and with their volunteers coming out an chanting for their support for the candidates and what its been all about. 19 candidates are going to be speaking here at the hall of fame dinner and just trying to talk to those activists, get the support in the state where it matters most but people are still talking about the poll. It was front page news here in the des moines register. You see there. Joe bide within the lead. They have each candidate on a corn stalk there and three candidates Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Pete Buttigieg in a tie. I caught up to corey booker on this poll. We know that pollings this far out have never predicted who will win. People like obama, kerry, won the nomination and won in iowa were polling in the Single Digits going in. It is about organization. Reporter and well walk in to see what the scene is out here. Extremely loud. Here we go. You see right there signs and support. 19 candidates to be talking. They have five minutes. One candidate that will not be . Vice President Joe Biden not showing up. Kendis, look at this. Joe biden is saying basically that he isnt there because he has Something Else to do, something important. Reporter right, right. He actually called the organizer of this event. We have the tweet to show you. But he said glad i picked up the phone when it said no caller i. D. It was Vice President joe biden wishing Iowa Democrats well today wishing that he could be here but he is at his granddaughters graduation. Vice president will be here later this week but as you see 19 candidates here, theyre speaking at the hall of fame event. Lots of support and energy, especially inside that event. Candidates walked up with supporters. Straight to the front door, walked inside there. Theyre going to be making the pitches to the voters. If you dont mind another peek inside of there. I want to offer this reminder while you listen and watch this. This is 238 days out from the Iowa Caucuses. Its cedar rapids. Its people there fired up and shows that the base is riled up there. Thank you to you and the crew up is there in iowa. Well continue to monitor that fight thats taking place between the jets and the sharks there. The campaigns in cedar rapids. There is one other thing to gath gather from that new poll. Its clear the field is wide open. Here with me is strategist and former chief of staff for virginia senator manchin Chris Kofinis and author of branding america and syrmichael middleton. Chris, just 17 days away from the first debate. What can we glean from the latest polling numbers . A race that is kind of still pretty unpredictable. You know . Basically its set in where the frontrunners are still kind of frontrunners. I think whats the most interesting i think both in terms of the iowa poll as well as some of the research we have done is that, you know, Elizabeth Warren, the last i say few weeks or month started to make a move. Ironically, that support is not coming from biden. It is more so coming from sanders creating a very interesting dynamic between those two i think in the next or the upcoming debate so i think that there is a lot of still uncertainty about where this race goes. Because i think a lot of voters this far out are still going to be quick to change their minds. But there seems to be more and more focus on a set group of candidates and a bit more of a challenge for the other candidates given the size of the field. Noel, as i was saying just there, you saw that the camera shot and, yes, those are Campaign Volunteers and such. But its clearly fired up way before the caucus is. What does that say as a republican strategist . Well, i think of politics right now because of donald trump in office like an emergency room doctor. All of us. It is constantly incoming, incoming. Different problems, Different Things in the news so everybody is involved in politics. Everybody, you know, you can go to the subway, the guy next to you reading something about politics. So right now what you are seeing is a frenzy because everybodys involved. Because it makes a difference who the democrats elect as a nominee to pair it up with trump and then have the real fight. It is like sport. E. R. Doctor. It is politics is it. This is a live picture inside that event, the hall of fame dinner and taking place right there. Early bird special perhaps. Corey booker and Bernie Sanders among the first speakers and some 19 of them getting 5 minutes. Speaking of Kamala Harris to speak there, shes polling in 7 in the latest poll. Basically flat from the previous polling and she is planning to ramp up her staffing there in the states to 65 people there on the ground. You think she needs the help there . I think so. But again it is early. Keep in mind i think the first debate will be very telling and Kamala Harris to exhibit an exceptional articulation of the views will likely be one of the very few who stand out the most come the first debate and i think as a result of that you will see her numbers climb. And, you know, we might see a breakout star. This is so fun about the debates is because there might be a couple of one liners that put somebody the next day, pow, to the top. All it takes is a comment and somebody getting behind them. Could be at the top to go down, as well. I didnt want to say that. The woman who spiritual adviser zsh. I saw that. Quite possibly might be one of those with a breakout moment in the debate. I dont know. Let me ask you, chris, because as you know like today some of the candidates were reacting to some of the latest polls. Take a listen and get reaction. Thats the poll of today. Its not just one poll. Im not talking about iowa. Even national polls, all of them. Dana, i heard the election is eight months from now when the first ballots cast in iowa. I dont know this many months out from the caucuses in iowa that the polls really indicate what our prospects are. If i relied on polls in any race i run i never would have served in the United States congress. Im happy to be in the top six and ahead of 18 people and we have got a Long Campaign ahead of us. Im clearly on the debate stage and expect to be there in the fall. Is it too early to be talking about the polls . No. Because i mean, it gives i think a temperature of where the race is. These are the kind of questions i tell you publicly candidates and campaigns hate. I know that because ive been there. All we do is sit there and look at these numbers and try to figure out what do they mean . What do they mean this far out . You know . It gives you again i think a snapshot of where the race is and who has i think an uphill battle. What i always say coming to polls is not focus on where a given number is or whether youre first or last. Whats your trend line . Is your trend line heading up . Is it kind of static . Not moving up . Down . If im betos campaign, i would be more concerned. Now is the race over . No, by no means. You could change the dynamics of your race but the reality is that when you have a field this large and this is larger than anything that democrats have ever seen, especially in a state like iowa, it makes things more complicated for candidates and campaigns. They may not fixate on a poll but theyre sitting there worried about how do i penetrate and how do i stand out and thats why i think again that first debate is going to be one of those moments where a candidate will rise and fall and going to be probably one of the most important debates of a long time. Another thing to look at, really fastly, is fund raising. This can be used as a fund raising tool. If a candidate is behind, these debates, thooz poese poll numbe early move. One reason biden avoided california and not there today because he has the most to lose. He does. Absolutely. From the debates, from many of these events. His numbers are so light. Only one place to go. We are 17 days from the debates. Our thanks to our guests. Theres the music and the graphic. First president ial debates of the election cycle june 26th and 27th in miami. Including from former congressman and president ial Candida Candida candidate beto orourke. These are agreements that mexico made in some cases months ago. Might have accelerated the timetable but by and large the president achieved nothing except to jeopardize the most important trading relationship that the United States of america has. Nbcs ron allen is joining us from the white house lawn and how does the white house feel about the events regarding the tariffs this week . Reporter well, the president s been tweeting up a storm about this and taking credit for what he says is a major agreement thats going do get cooperation from mexico that hasnt been there before and help solve the problems at the southern border. The question, of course, is what actually happened as a result of this threat of tariffs. The president as you will recall is widely criticized by democrats, republicans, the business community. About threatening tariffs against mexico. The argument being in the end to only hurt American Consumers and add tension to this really important trading agreement, trading partner, trading relationship between the United States and mexico. So the president is touting this as a major victory. Heres what the backers are saying about the agreement, as well. He brought mexico to the table again. And what theyre talking about theyre going to be doing, its a game changer. Hes using tariffs as leverage in trade negotiations. Im not a big supporter of tariffs. He is. And the willingness to use that probably helped produce a result. I hope we dont have to go back to that. Reporter the question is will this issue come up again and some people think it will. Theres questions about whether the mention cons if they follow through on the commitments of increasing the troops on the border to allow Asylum Seekers in the United States, tens of thousands of people potentially in northern mexico, if that happens would that ease the pressure on the u. S. Border and questions about that. President trump made it clear if he doesnt see a significant change at the border he will turn to tariffs again and unclear what he considers a success or progress. So this issues going to be around for sometime and in mexicos concern as the election season heats up here, because immigration is a hot button issue that well be back at this argument about tariffs, mexico, immigration soon yet again. Mexican officials are worried they might be be a political pawn in the race in the 2020 with these tariffs. Our thanks to ron allen at the white house. Joining me to discuss further is reporter for the New York Times and reporter for the hill. Julia, lets start with you. The way all the of this unfolded over the past week, at the end from a political standpoint, was it a vigt ri for the democrats . It is hard to say i think because i think President Trump is packaging this as a vigt ri f victory for him to dotout t negotiating skills but appears to be an expansion on something that was agreed to before with mexican officials and whether its a done deal that remains to be seen and i think the president s recent tweets on this matter, you know, essentially threatening to bring tariffs back to the table if mexico doesnt follow through with anymore of, you know, its end of the bargain shows that the president does not believe necessarily that this is the end to this issue. So, meantime, this whole experience eye opening for the president. Many say. Because it sort of indicated like sort of many are hoping or thinking its a canary in the coal mine and so many republicans coming out against this policy. Very early on and staunchly. While the president was overseas. Does it show that the this is a line where the republicans are willing to break with this president . A little bit. Its showing that the president does have some limits with respect to his supporters but again if he claims it as a victory, if everyone else around him touts it as a victory, will he repeat this in the future . If this is something that he sees works for him, if hes able to sell this as a victory, despite agreements in march, despite agreements happening earlier on, announcements made at a congressional hearing, related to this, if he can turn around and sell the idea to his supporters as a victory he gets away with it and could do it in the future. The pressure from within the president s own party forcing his hand with this . To a lesser deal for that matter. Right. I think it definitely could have played a bit of a role because we know that white house officials when they met with Senate Republicans earlier this week there was reporting that they were very taken aback from these comments from Senate Republicans. We saw that major allies of the president in the Senate Republican side of the chamber such as senator grassley were saying things like, oh, i agree with the president S Immigration policy but not on this. Because this is going to hurt farmers in my state so i think President Trump realized that there was too much of a Political Risk in all of this. A tariff is a tax and the Republican Party is more so antitax or pro lower taxes if you will so this could have gone against his own job. I think the president saw that. If the tar itches instated this would hurt the current jobs numbers and from yesterday they appear to be a bit anemic. Yeah. Those job numbers were pretty terrible. Way down from what anybody expected. 75,000 jobs opposed to the 180,000 that were expected. Ozzy, with some Small Business owners yesterday, last night, saying that the tariffs, one with china, are finally starting to have an impact. Do you get a sense gnat president is seeing, like, there are some red flags coming the economy and it is time to try to make some sort of deal everywhere . The economy is what could really impact this presidency. He came in as a businessman, promising to sort of expand his own personal brand to the American Economy and you only get so long to sort of blame your predecessor. Some point reelections are a vote of confidence in the person sitting in office. And if the economy starts going down there is no other place for voters to turn to other than the president for a decision about whether or not they like whens happening with the economy. With china, if he doesnt get doesnt have an out and explaining a victory there, that could really be troubling because who is his base . Theres a lot of manufacturers, blue collar workers. If they start feeling an impact from the economy all the other rhetoric falls away and you have a decision to make on election day. A pocketbook decision. Exactly. Thank you for joining us. Julia, hang tight with us. Well be back with you. If at first you dont succeed, you try again . How missouris congressional candidate hopes Lessons Learned in 2018 will propel her to victory in 2020. Louis area and defeated last year and relaunched the campaign for 2018. She joins me right now. The congressional candidate with a shirt that says run. What are you trying to do . Run and win. So i mean, why do this again . I have to. First of all, i ran there was a point to me running. St. Louis deserves change. We have been going down the same path for so long and the onlt way to change it is to have somebody else with fresh ideas and a heart and soul for the ground, the regular people of st. Louis, to go forward. I want to show a little bit of your Campaign Video picking up on that. If i was a rational person i would have dropped out of this race a long time ago. I lived in st. Louis all of my life and my heart hurts to see our region being represented by career politicians that take large summers of money from corporations while we have some of the highest rates of poverty, uncredited schools and health care disparities. You are not running against a republican. You are running in the primary. Yes. We should point out against a democrat thats been there for 18 years. Yes. Is he not doing enough for that district . No. As a democrat. Not at all. Not at all. It is not just about being a democrat. Because you are a democrat doesnt mean youre doing a great job. We have a lot of issues in our community. St. Louis im a registered nurse. I work in Community Mental health. Im an activist, a mother. Youre busy. A Community Activist registered nurse. Yes. Your days are quite busy. Yes, yes. There are a lot of needs in our community and so one thing that i see is even during ferguson on the ground as a regular person i was out there because i wanted to see change but what i saw was the people that are supposed to represent us getting 174,000 a year to do it not representing us but photoopes were okay. We didnt do photoopes. We were fighting for justice. In the same way, im fighting for my patients every day. They deserve health care. Why not be vocal about it . I dont believe as leaders you lea lead from the back. You lead from the front and you have to do things that make you uncomfortable. You cant go with the status quo. Ive been to ferguson and i know that it is a strong democratic district there that you have there. Yes. But does this make it vulnerable for a republican to take over . Not at all. You put this in play. Nancy pelosi said she doesnt want anybody to run against anybody and primary. Were safe. Were safe. We are a democratic district. We dont have to worry about that. I have a lot of republicans that actually support our campaign. So were not thats not something were worried about. We are worried to make sure that the regular people, every day people, people like we that dont accept corporate pac money that love the community. Meantime, we were mentioning knock down the house documentary with the congresswoman ocasiocortez. The star of it many will say and pulled off an upset here in new york. She came out there to ferguson and to st. Louis to help try to help your Campaign Last year. Yes. Why didnt the same sort of magic she tapped into work there in mo. I was in a car accident april 23rd. My primary was in august and so for the last two and a half months i was on my back and when alexandria came she was carrying me down the street. That was a barrier not being able to canvas and reach out to voters and people are used to a certain thing and so when youre talking about a black woman against a black man, you have to break through that. Why would you do that to another . It is about who takes care of the community and who has a history of doing it and that would be me. All right. The congressman has been there in the district for 18 years and took over his dad who was there, a congressman, since the 1960s. Yes. Man, you got a fight against you. Yes, yes, yes. Im a fighter best wishes to you. Thank you. Thank you. Several House Committees to hold a series of hearings on the mueller russia investigation and the democrats want the public to understand the crimes that mu mueller outlined in the report since most people did not actually completely read it. The leader on the republican side has not allowed the democrats in our hearing monday to say because of rules of conduct hes a liar, a grifter, hes obstructed justice or any of these things. The rules of congress and jeffersons rules about the king applyi applying to us dont let us say the truth. What we want the American People to know that the president of the United States directed individuals to create false documents to give to lie to investigators. I do believe we have got to continue to get the facts. Im focused on delivering for the people. There is some discussion about whats the best vehicle to do it, through the normal oversight proceedings or is it through the opening of an impeachment inquiry . Thats a process question. A process question. This comes as a total 61 house lawmakers are now calling for an Impeachment Vote or inquiry. We almost have a quorum. Joining me now is Danny Savalis and julia there reporting on the hill any given day and the democrats seem to be using the hearing to make a case, what is that case for . Yeah. I think democrats really want to follow up on what special counsel Robert Mueller punted to them last month when he essentially said that he did not you know, the Justice Department did not have really the leeway to charge the president with a crime and i think democrats want to delve more into that obstruction question, whether prornt committed obstruction in the election. I think youll see deep diving to get the witnesses to hear their perspective on this and i think democrats are cognizant of the fact to be careful with how they proceed in this and the shadow of a president ial election and polling showing that this is not the top priority for the American People when looking or Many Americans when looking at their prior lists and want to focus on health care and the economy and i think democrats are walking a narrow tight rope on whether they want to follow up on this Mueller Investigation or focus on those Kitchen Table issues. Many of our road warriors out there on the road for several months say they dont care about the Mueller Report or impeachment. Its health care and the economy among the topics. Danny, to you. What are you expecting from the House Judiciary Committee tomorrow when the Panel Interviews john dean . It is going to be really interesting. Harkening back to decades ago and make for a lot of political effect because those that remember and learn who john deans significance is draw obvious connections of the characters that we have seen playing out in the news over the last year and the man whos perceived by many to be someone who stood up to a former administration that was arguably very, very corrupt. Ep especially at the very top with then president nixon. Many say the vote on tuesday is a really key vote. Why is that . This is a fascinating issue because congress has long had the power to subpoena. The inherent power to subpoena information and people to testify before it but we really havent talked much about historically what happens when it seeks to enforce that power against the one branch of government that helps enforce the subpoenas and thats the executive branch and more specifically the department of justice and you create a rip in the space time continuum when if youre congress and need the department of justice to enforce the subpoenas you do it against the department of justice and so this battle will eventually come to a head and probably help us further define what the limits are of executive privilege and limits are of Congress Power to subpoena and also to enforce those subpoenas. Sounds like space time continuum and a constitutional crisis. I wont go that far, kendis. You are a crisisist and i believe its stretching and not quite at crisis yet. If not that, julia, it does appear to be a hostile environment and the events that will be taking place this week there on capital hill wont help matters. Yeah, absolutely. Not helping anything. I think this the drama thats really unfolded around the Mueller Report we have seen how its how it negatively impacted other issues. Looking out the tariff debate, republicans very against President Trumps threat to impose tariffs on mexico and seeing heightened rhetoric on both sides. Nancy pelosi came back and slammed President Trumps negotiating skills and normandy and President Trump really ripping into special counsel robert museumer and nancy pelosi calling her a disaster. So, you know, clear there have been tough times i think between both ends of pennsylvania avenue. The white house and capitol hill but this is a very low point in relations and i think americans looking in on this from the inside outside of washington are essentially, you know, very much sick of the environment thats going on in washington. I think like we were saying before they like there to be more focus on issues like infrastructure, health care, the economy but there seems to be a continuing focus from democrats, republicans and the president on this Mueller Report no matter what side of the issue theyre on. I talked to steve cohen yesterday. Heres another piece. They need to be held in contempt. Im disappointing we are not using the inherent contempt. But the attorney who is are outstanding attorneys think that that would be in the courts for a longer period of time because its not tried for such a listening time. Danny . I love the inherent contempt power. The sergeant of arms who sounds like a character in a play from the 18th century goes out and arrests folks, maybe Congress Folks in the office refusing to come to the hill and brings them forcibly to capitol hill. Realistically this is not a power that is likely to have a lot of effect. Really, i dont think theres going to be any successfuls where they send this individual out. I dont know what he would carry. A revolver or a saber to enforce it. Congress has three real sources of power, contempt and a third inherent contempt and burden falls on the sergeant of arms and thats why its an iffy power to use and still is a power technically available to congress. Its political unicorn in many ways. Sure, yes, exactly. I love thats what you love. Julia, thank you. The only person i know that does as long as john dowds is my 70yearold mother and usually a harmless round of guess who died. You remember eric the mailman . He died. Youre not leaving voicemails against adversaries, with adversaries of National Security issues. It seens john dowd in my opinion should always talk to the other side not guilty of obstruction of justice but guilty of ridiculous voicemail practices in 2019. I know better.
