An openly gay candidate for the presidency of the United States declaring his candidacy there and being greeted on stage by his husband. An amazing moment no matter how you look ate. Thats mayor Pete Buttigieg kicking off his 2020 campaign, a rally right is there in south bend where hes been the mayor for some eight years introducing himself as mayor pete. He continued to set himself apart from a packed field of candidates of course taking direct swipes at President Trump. Buttigieg said that he is ready to tell a different story than make America Great again and that this election is not about winning the presidency. It is about winning an era. And focus on three guiding principles. Freedom, security and democracy. Lets bring back the panel right there. We were all watching it together. It is a historical moment watching there. I just thought it was extraordinarily well done and if i were his team i would be very pleased. I think it was the best opening speech so far. We have seen so many speeches. We were here for Kamala Harris opening speech. Josh, paint the picture of whos there in the scene. I had some friends mentioning that it seemed as if there were a lot more men than women but give me a makeup of the sense of the crowd there. Reporter diverse in age. Millennials, people in the 60s and 70s. It is a mostly white crowd. There are a few people, africanamericans, hispanics, but for the most part a lot of caucasian people here. Pete buttigieg trying to address a lot of those issues talking about Racial Justice, talking about social justice. One thing we did not hear at all from Pete Buttigieg was the word trump. He didnt mention the president by name and definitely trying to draw an implicit contrast talking about how we cant go back to a politics of yesterday and making promises, false promises he says that we can restore things to a way that they were, that he says were never actually as good as people politicians say they were. Also, it seemed to be invoking obama a little bit. On a few occasions. Talking about running for office as being an act of hope and also talking about changes coming like it or not. Definitely the most resonant moment from the crowd here in the room talking about politics in washington being an all consuming mesmerizing horror show and seemed to rile people up here and also sol of his comments about his childhood, about what it would be like to talk to the child of 20 years ago to say that as a young gay man with a hard to pronounce last name he could one day be serving the country in the military and running for president and doing so in a viable way and a big reaction from the crowd there and. I imagine you watched this moment and wanted to get your take on this moment right here, 37yearold declaring his candidacy for president. I think its inspirational that this young man whos mayor of south bend, indiana, and is openly gay is announcing his candidacy for president. Clearly he was exciting the crowd. He talked about so many themes that are important to america such as Affordable Health care and social justice and Racial Justice. But he also talked about his personal story and the fact that he could run and be a very credible candidate is so inspirational. Do you have a horse in this race right now . I do not. You do not. You are from my names bennett and that aint it. But you are there from california and, of course, we have the senator from california whos running, Kamala Harris. Get a sense as you look at this guy and listen to the speech there of nearly 40 minutes, a formidable candidate for your senator there . He is a very exciting candidate. I do think Kamala Harris is also exciting and let us not forget that we have Eric Swalwell who Just Announced and he is from california, as well. What im looking toward is the fact that these young people can excite the millennials to vote in the coming election and the millennials will be very, very important. Their participation could make this presidency. And having somebody like Pete Buttigieg is very, very exciting to them certainly because he presents a whole new, fresh face. Yes, he is.
