And whether or not we see ten, we could see up to 20 potentially House Republicans depending on how things play out in the next 24 to 48 hours. Thanks for having me on the program. Yes, i was on the call. Yes, it was chilling. Yes, it was terrifying. I cannot divulge details about it. I dont want to be a part of providing information to the terrorists who believe they are going to war against america and who have started a war against america. But suffice it to say that there has to be a lot more that happens in order to protect our country, to protect the capitol, and to protect the incoming president of the United States joe biden and Vice President kamala harris. On the subject of impeachment, were hearing a talking point from republicans trying to turn this all back on democrats, saying that if you pursue impeachment, it will only divide the country further. In fact, one democrat in the Senate Joe Manchin has intimated as much as well. Whats your argument for or against that . Katy, what has been happening in our country, and it did not begin with the attack on america. And i do feel very strongly that we cant just call it an attack on the capitol. We have heard warnings and promises from these terrorists that they are going to go after State Capitols. So there is a bonfire of terror that has engulfed america, and some folks in the congress are asking us to just walk away. We cannot walk away. If we are to put out those flames, it starts with accountability, and it starts also with justice. On the political side, the only form of accountability is impeachment. On the justice side, i hope that there are prosecutions and convictions. Do you expect this to just get better or go away once donald trump is no longer in office . Or are you of the mind that the republicans who supported this and are continuing to support it, this idea that the election wasnt fair, jim jordan included, we just heard that at the top of the show, should face their own consequences. They need to, katy. The way that they behaved has been shameless. The fact that after the attack on america, they walked back into the House Chamber and continued, they persisted with the same lies that drove these terrorists to come to washington, d. C. Well, what is already out in the Public Domain is that in our call yesterday, there was an identification of different groups and different attacks and different, you know, lines of attack, so to speak. And so we know that the threats are out there. We know that they are real. It is from my perspective, a really dangerous time for our country because these people do believe that they are at war. And, again, this is why i say this is a terrorist attack against the United States of america. So they are we saw we all witnessed that they came prepared for war. They brought bombs, they brought ammunition, they brought weapons. They say that this is too little too late. This was a unanimous decision by the commission that handles that here in michigan. But a lot of democrats say, look, just because you have concealed carry here, they should be able to ban all weapons. Some republican lawmakers, however, they argue that, one, that michigan lawmakers dont have the authority to actually ban all those weapons. They also point out that it would cost a great deal, 1. 5 million a year for a state that doesnt have the budget for it, including metal detectors, and so forth. I should point out, this is a story not just about michigan, its really going on across the country. And what we saw in his statements today has proved positive of that. Joining me now is democratic senator Tammy Baldwin of wisconsin. Senator, i want to get your take on this call thats about to happen today. But, first i want to touch on what Gabe Gutierrez just mentioned about the wisconsin State Capitol, that it is currently being boarded up in anticipation of these armed protests. You can see it right here the bottom levels, the windows boarded up. Is your state ready for whatever might come . Well, certainly we have had protrump rallies and other activity at our State Capitol over the past year, we have had its a site of demonstration. But i hope that with clear eyes, having watched what happened in washington, d. C. Last wednesday that people are taking this exceptionally seriously and planning meticulously to make sure that our capitol and our lawmakers are safe. This is a very disturbing time as we know. There is a lot of fingerpointing going on in Law Enforcement right now about what happened last week in the capitol. Are you confident that they are going to be ready to keep the capitol and you safe in the coming days and everybody else on Inauguration Day . Well, as you mentioned, im about to get a briefing on inaugural security. And we do know that a lot of people are working very hard with the advantage of having knowledge about what happened last week. No one can say anyone is going to be surprised, because we saw the violent insurrection mounted last wednesday. I am going to attend the inauguration at the capitol. I think especially in light of these attacks on our democracy that it is very important for all of us including the rest of the world to see our next president inaugurated, sworn in, and to see that transition of power take place. If the house does impeach President Trump, what should the senate do . Well, the senate has a constitutional duty to hold a trial as soon as an article of impeachment is passed, and managers from the house are appointed and all of that is brought over to the senate. Its not a matter of discretion. Its something that we must do. And obviously there needs to be accountability when President Trump incited a violent insurrection against members of congress while we were doing our constitutional duty to confirm the results of the election and count the electoral ballots from the 50 states. There has to be accountability. However, im mindful of the need to make sure that joe biden is able to quickly set up a government. You know, right now we have three cabinet secretaries who have left their posts. We need a functioning government to respond to the crises and struggles that American People are facing right now with the pandemic and the ensuing economic fallout. And weve got to do all of the above. In light of that, let me play what one of your colleagues, senator joe manchin, said on fox news earlier today. I think this is so ill advised for joe biden to be coming in trying to heal the country, trying to be the president of all the people when were going to be so divided and fighting again. Whats your response . Well, theres no question in my mind that there needs to be accountability when one incites a violent insurrection against our democracy and members of congress doing their duties. I would like the president to resign. Thats clearly, he hasnt heeded those calls. I know today the house is trying a different approach to pass a resolution invoking the twentyfifth amendment whereby a majority of the president s cabinet can vote to remove him. But obviously if the Vice President doesnt take action tomorrow, they will start their debate on an article of impeachment, inciting an insurgency. There are eight days until joe biden is president. Are you worried about what this President Donald Trump might do in these eight days remaining . Absolutely. And thats why removal, whether its by resignation, the twentyfifth amendment, or impeachment, and barring him from running for office again is so important. But weve seen what he has done with just a short time left in his presidency. And i think he is dangerous and capable of inciting additional violence. And we need to not only hold him accountable for what he has done, but we also need to see him removed from office as quickly as possible. Senator Tammy Baldwin, thank you so much for joining us. Congresswoman pramila jaya paul also tested positive. They were part of a group that was forced to shelter in place with several republican lawmakers who refused to wear masks. Punch bowl obtained this video offering masks to some of her gop colleagues, all of whom declined. Cases of the virus are surging all around the country. Also in washington. And now the Trump Administration is announcing a new plan to speed up the vaccine rollout releasing all of the supply of vaccine and recommending that anyone over the age of 65 can get it. Joining me now is nbc news correspondent Erin Mclaughlin who is in california and pulmonologist and msnbc medical contributor dr. Vin gupta. So, erin, disneyland and dodgers stadium be turned to mass vaccination sites. Are the guidelines going to be changed in california to align with what hhs is now recommending . Yeah. Well, at this point as authorities are scrambling to transform these socalled super sites in the case of dodgers stadium, the largest testing site in the country into a vaccination site. Still their efforts are no match for the virus. It continues to spread throughout Southern California. We were granted exclusive access to one of the largest medical centers in this area, serving millions of people, including majority of essential workers, the harbor ucla medical center. We were given a tour. And it was absolutely shocking, katy, to see these makeshift isolation units. We saw some unit with four patients crammed inside, all on ventilators being treated by one nurse, oxygen supply that should be serving two, having to be stretched to four. Staff stretched beyond their limits. Take a listen to what one doctor had to say. We have nurses and nursing assistants who are kind of working in teams to try to provide icu care. But many of the people proigthat care are in fact not icutrained personnel. So every day youre kind of having to make it up as you go . Every day is a new day of making things up as we go. Its like puzzles and a jigsaw, were just moving pieces around trying to make things fit. So you really get a sense of the desperation there. When we were inside the hospital, there were some beds available, but we were told that that was because seven to ten patients had passed away from covid19 at the weekend, freeing up those badly needed beds. And doctors there were telling me that essentially they feel like theyre in the eye of a hurricane at this point, that the hospitalizations in Southern California have leveled off a bit here in l. A. County. But they know that in seven to ten days doctors say there could be a tsunami of the virus, patients coming in from that christmas holiday. Thats when the delay in viral spread, thats when theyre expecting to see hospitalizations once again rise in this area. And theyre bracing for the absolute worst, katy . You know, los angeles is my hometown, and friends and family out there are really worried about the surge and whats happening. Theyre worried to leave their homes. Dr. Gupta, what is top of mind for you right now . Katy, how do we get the vaccines scaled and in peoples arms as quickly as possible, especially with reports of this new variant, this new strain coming out from the uk that we think is more transmissible. Importantly, amongst those that are younger as well and individuals 20 and younger, it looks like in the uk at least, those were the individuals in which we saw this strain most often detected. What does that mean here as teachers and students restarted inperson instruction in a lot of schools across the country, i think it forces us to evaluate who should be getting first. So obviously those 65 and older as the cdc said today, any essential front line staff, nursing home residents, we know that. But then what about teachers, people who could have a bad outcome from covid19 . Should we be having inperson instruction right now . Or should we wait until they get vaccinated. Lets align Public Policy with reality as it is. This new strain we thinks already here, its highly transmissible across most ages. So we need to be mindful of this. Number two, im hoping cdc is going to correct their the confusing statement they put on the website today about no maximum interval between the first and second dose for the vaccine is indicated. That is confusing, katy. Because what weve been telling everybody, i say this to my patients, people who ask that you need to get the second dose if youve gotten the pfizer or the Moderna Vaccine at the prescribed interval. There should be no distance between what the cdc says and what the data shows. Because public trust really hinges on that. So i hope they actually edit that and come back to what the data says because public trust is really vital here. No doubt about that. And its been eroded over time.
